Belbury Poly - new album The Path out today. Tumblr won't embed Soundcloud widgets anymore, so here is the promo video instead:
youtube
The Path is the latest album from Belbury Poly (aka Ghost Box records founder Jim Jupp). This time round Jupp has recruited a full band roster to expand his own unique electronica. He is joined by occasional Belbury Poly collaborator Christopher Budd on Bass and Guitar, Jesse Chandler (of Midlake, Mercury Rev & Pneumatic Tubes) on flute, clarinet and keyboards, Max Saidi on drums plus narration from author and poet, Justin Hopper. Musically it takes as its starting point a particular moment of early 1970s British film soundtracks by the likes of Roy Budd and Roger Webb; a soundworld of easy-going jazz and funky rhythms gently coloured with pastoral strings and flutes. The Path, however, is unmoored from time or place thanks to Hopper’s narrative style, Chandler’s rustic flutes and keys, Budd’s soulful psychedelic guitars and Jupp’s production and electronics. Hopper's words form a loose, open-ended narrative and it's not just a continuous reading. The vocal passages are interspersed at intervals in a very musical way amongst the instrumental passages. It's very much an album with spoken word rather than a spoken word album. Artwork by Julian House and liner notes by Justin Hopper, the vinyl version includes a free download code card. CD and digital versions also include four instrumental versions of spoken word tracks.

FM - Old Habits Die Hard
Tumblr media
Out of the Blue" an. Peter Pan and Wendy
Peter Pan and Wendy is a 2023 American fantasy adventure film directed by David Lowery from a screenplay he co-wrote with Toby Halbrooks. Jim Whittaker served as a producer on Walt Disney Pictures' production of Walt Disney's live-action remake of the 1953 animated feature film Peter Pan, based on the 1904 play Peter Pan; Or, J.M. The Boy Who Didn't Grow Up (also known as Peter and Wendy) by Barry. The film stars Alexander Moloney (his film debut) and Ever Anderson in the title roles. Jude Law, Yara Shahidi, Alyssa Wapanatahak, Joshua Pickering, Jacoby Juppe, and Jim Gaffigan also appear in supporting roles. The story follows Peter Pan and Wendy, who travel to the magical world of Neverland with Wendy's brother and Peter's best friend, Tinker Bell. Along the way, Wendy embarks on adventures that will change her life and encounters Peter's nemesis, Captain Hook.

JOHN FOXX & THE BELBURY CIRCLE - “SUIT”
Ever since leaving Ultravox to pursue weirder and wilder things, John Foxx has been something of a serial collaborator, constantly teaming up with sundry other artists. I could list them all out, here, but I would quickly run out of space on this post, and spoil all of my ideas for other things I want to write about on my blog. Suffice it to say that I think it’s very valuable for creative people to collaborate, and that it forces us to rethink things and come to insightful new conclusions. The major threads of his style have remained very consistent, but each new partnership he forges seems to bring a bit of new light to his work in a way that’s satisfying to the devoted fan while still being interesting and breaking some new ground.
I especially admire Foxx’s ability to indulge in what we might consider “trendy” movements in electronic music. One of my other hobbies besides music is fashion, and I see discourse about trends and their significance there all the time. The common-sense consensus always seems to be that one should feel free to reject trends entirely, while also feeling free to indulge in items that are trendy and have fun with them, as long as one is true to their own style and wearing what one genuinely enjoys. I think a lot of music critics are guilty of rejecting trendy movements out of hand, or at least believing that a trend is only valuable if it manages to stick around and turn into a more permanent fixture. You likely won’t be surprised that I see it more like leopard mini-skirts. Over the years, John Foxx has dabbled in everything from “electroclash” in the Aughts to “vapourwave” more recently, and earlier this past decade he went a little “hauntology.”
Chiefly associated with the independent record label Ghost Box Records, the brainchild of one Jim Jupp, the hauntology aesthetic is sort of like vapourwave for an earlier generation. They’re both heavily anchored in nostalgia and warped, incomplete remembrance of the cultural landmarks of the past, and portray that with indistinct or ambiguous artistic elements. They’re a little creepy and unnerving at times, distorting the familiar, and gaslighting one’s own memories of childhood innocence. But where vapourwave channels the bubblegum excitement of Neopets, hit clips, and the SEGA Dreamcast, hauntology is more interested in things like Mid-Century public broadcasting, old science fiction, and tales of the Fortean or occult. (“The Belbury Circle” are simply the “house band” of Jupp and associates of his record label.)
Anyway, “Suit” is one of my favourite things to come from this collaboration. The styles of Foxx and Jupp mesh together incredibly well, and it feels like a very organic progression for Foxx, who’s been wistfully musing about mercurial, laconic Englishmen in grey suits drifting through desolate groves for some forty years anyhow. Whatever you want to call it, it’s the perfect thing to put on to soothe you, while cozying up indoors, or perhaps on a train, in some chilly fall or winter weather. Hot tea optional, but preferred.

(via Belbury Poly, Jim Jupp and Ghost Box Records – The Haunted Generation)
Darkness falls fast in the woods. Unhampered by street lighting, car headlights and the pale hubbub of everyday urban life, twilight descends with the bare minimum of warning, and many a late woodland walk – begun in the syrupy sunlight of evening – has unexpectedly ended amid the sinister crackle of night-time.
In this inky blindness, the imagination moves faster than the feet. Leaves hiss, bracken rustles and every minor twig snap becomes a gunshot. The resulting thoughts are inevitable. Am I alone here? Or is there someone – or something – hiding in the trees?
Such thoughts are evoked with sinister precision on The Gone Away, the new album from Ghost Box Records co-founder Jim Jupp, recording – as ever – in his guise as Belbury Poly. The album was inspired by traditional tales of fairy beings lurking in the British woodland: not the floaty elemental spirits of J.M. Barrie and co, but the malevolent goblins of medieval folklore....

📽 The Legend of Tarzan (2016)
Just sayin, Tarzan is hot! I watched this movie when it first came out, but I didn’t remember as much of it as I thought I did. One of my favorite parts is when Tarzan gets bitten during a fight and closes up the wound with ants. It’s gross, but it’s so cool! Besides being attractive, Alexander Skarsgård is great in this role; and Margot Robbie is awesome as Jane, too. And even though he’s the bad guy, I love Christoph Waltz in this! It’s really packed full of amazing performances and beautiful visuals. I could watch it again and again.
Sex/nudity: 3/10 (some jokes/implications, implied sex, male nudity but nothing below the belt is shown clearly)
Language: 2/10 (not horrible but there is some)
Violence: 5/10 (a lot of fighting between men and men and men and animals, death shown sometimes pretty brutally)
Overall rating: 9/10

Belbury Poly - Root and Branch - from the new album, The Gone Away (Ghost Box) (natch)
Inspired by far-fetched fairy folklore, The Gone Away is the new album by Belbury Poly, the recording name of Ghost Box Records co-founder Jim Jupp. Vintage electronics, music room instrumentation and polyrhythmic sequences conjure up folk-ish, kosmiche melodies.
Evocative and unsettlingly familiar, it sets a darker and more serene tone than the last full-length Poly album, New Ways Out. Belbury Poly’s sound palette is still in evidence however; mellow analogue synths, rustic pipes and rusty strings. Gone are the usual supporting session musicians, with Jupp performing all parts himself. The album came together slowly over the course of three years while Jupp collaborated on various side projects and was finally completed a few days before the global lockdown commenced.

FM bringt das neue Album Old Habits Die Hard im Mai
Tumblr media
Out of the Blue" an. Bassist und Gründungsmitglied Merv Goldsworthy erklärt: "No Easy Way Out' hat den großen typischen FM-Refrain. Die härtere Seite des Albums wird durch "Lost", "Another Day in My World" und "Leap of Faith" repräsentiert. Out of the Blue (4.21) 2. Don’t Need Another Heartache (4.35) 3. No Easy Way Out (3.54) 4. Lost (5.20) 5. Whatever It Takes (4.37) 6. Black Water (4.52) 7. Cut Me Loose (4.34) 8. Leap of Faith (4.05) 9. California (5.17) 10. Another Day in My World (4.14) 11. Blue Sky Mind (5.06) Production Credits: • Old Habits Die Hard • Produced by FM • Mixed by Jeff Knowler • Mastered by Jim Griffiths at Principal Audio • Photography by Paul Stuart Hollingsworth • Recorded at West3 Productions, Tremelo, Electric Pepperland, Morsecode Studios, JK Studios • All songs written by – Overland / Goldsworthy / Jupp/Davis / Kirkpatrick Track by Track: Out of the Blue - "Ich habe diesen Song auf Lanzarote geschrieben", sagt Jem Davis, Keyboarder von FM. Overwhelming & Brutal
Overwhelming (verb)
Have a strong emotional effect on
Overcome with emotion
Affected by something very strongly
Synonym to: strike, move, affect
Brutal (adjective)
Unpleasant or harsh
Direct without any attempt to disguise unpleasantness
Synonym but not limited to: violent, savage, direct
Brutal & Overwhelming
A combination of both words have a negative-leaning connotation. The experience of course, is subjective to each audience. People who loves seeing horror or action film might find these emotion exhilarating while people who hates loud noises and jump-scare might hate the emotion and feel scared. Study by Lynch and Martins (2015) shows that low empathisers have more tendency to enjoy violent and gore media and vice versa.
Horror enthusiast seeks sensation from suspense and resolve. Suspense for example, is when a character is in threat of a masked killer and resolve is when the killer is finally caught or killed in retaliation. We often feel a sense of euphoria and relieve when a threat is resolved and such logic happens behind a horror enthusiast’s mind.
Zuckerman’s model of sensation-seeking mentions four related but different factors that includes:
thrill and adventure seeking
experience seeking
disinhibition
boredom susceptibility.

Here are the examples of 11 artworks that feels brutal or overwhelming or both:
Requiem for A Dream
(viewer discretion is advised)
youtube
Requiem for a Dream (2000) is a film depicting addicts who are connected to each other. This movie often uses parallel cuts to indicate things are happening at the same time. The use of meditative music over heart-wrenching scenes creates a haunting effect. The editing choice in the final scenes successfully created tension and the continuously looping parallel shots of the characters proves to be overwhelming.
Before Your Eyes
youtube
Before Your Eyes tells a story of a boy who died very young due to an illness. This game utilises motion sensors and the game progresses every time the player blinks. Each scene is crafted with great details making the players holding their blink to elongate the scene. The first person perspective makes the audience sits in the young boy's place watching life flashing before their eyes. This game is overwhelmingly beautiful and heart-wrenching in its aspect to cherish whatever amount time we have left on earth.
Devotion
youtube
youtube
In Devotion (2019), the user plays as a father solving clues and puzzles as to what happens in his life. This game criticises the influence of cults in Taiwan. It also heavily criticises overbearing parents and the stigma of mental illness in Asia.
The use of red colour during revelation and flashback scenes and the silent jumpscare during most of the gameplays is very effective to keep the players anxious. This technique also does not over expose the players resulting in a more unpredictable jumpscares. Besides it’s graphic imagery and colour scheme, this game is brutal due to its harsh and raw depictions of cults and superstitions that affects vulnerable families in Taiwan.

Everywhere At The End of Time
youtube
This album created by The Caretaker depicts the mind of a patient with alzheimer. The 6 hour long piece involves a continuously degrading set of music. Each stage shows a deteriorated version of it’s previous stage. The album ends at static noises and ultimately long silence.
What makes this album eerie, overwhelming and brutal is the idea behind it. Exposing the audience to what dementia sounds like forces them to emphatise with the memories. The duration of the album also emphasises the slow and painful degeneration and by stage 5 the sudden void creates a horrible overwhelmingly somber aura knowing the memories are forever gone.
Ouroborindra (album)
youtube
Ouroborindra (2005) was produced by Jim Jupp under the pseudonym “Eric Zann”. Jupp stated this album was inspired by H.P. Lovecraft. Similar to Lovecraft, this album has a haunting and hair-raising aesthetic. A minute listening session gives the audience a taste of Lovecraftian cosmic horror.
The static noise and continuously evolving sounds creates an overwhelming eeriness while not being painful to hear. Some parts are accompanied by pianos giving the listener’s ear some time to rest. This arrangement choice proves to be excellent as it creates a pleasant bridge and outro.

Brutalist Architecture
Tumblr media Tumblr media
At a glance, this architecture looks boring and unappealing. What makes a brutalist characteristic is the blocky and chunky design.
Some argue that brutalism is an egalitarian movement, this movement strays away from white painted walls with decorated windows typical of the time. At the time, the geometric and blocky design was considered modern. This evidence appears in futuristic movies and in spy/war movies symbolising rebellion, modernism, and revolution.

Shoujo Tsubaki (Camellia Girl)
(viewer discretion is advised)
youtube
Shoujo Tsubaki (1992) is a film adapted from the comic of the same title. The uncensored animation completed with voice acting added many layers of disturbance and the feeling of dread. Many people found this film very upsetting resulting to banning in several countries.
This artwork is one of the greater known titles within the ero-guro (short for erotic-grotesque) genre. The Ero-guro genre symbolises resistance and rebellion during world war 1. Some also enjoy it as escapism and sexual liberation. This film is brutal due to its depiction of grooming, abuse, and nonsensical grotesque scenes.

Sistine Chapel Church
Tumblr media
The wall and ceiling of the Sistine Chapel were painted by Michelangelo (1508-1512). It is not surprising that this work took an incredibly arduous time that Michelangelo dreads working on it. The details and paint stand the test of time and the colossus artwork will make every visitor gasps in awe. Each painting has incredible details and the colours are carefully coordinated. It only takes a single glance to feel overwhelmed by the presence of this artwork.

Japan Sinks
youtube
Japan Sinks is a Japanese animation series created by Masaaki Yuasa. The animation was an adaptation of a novel with the same title. Each depiction of death are raw and uncensored oftentimes includes close-ups. This series was a contribution to Paralympics 2020 and was set to release as a promotional campaign.
It doesn’t take the brightest bulb to notice the brutality of this series. The main characters experienced sudden deaths of their loved ones and the grief was left unprocessed until much late. Naturally, this end of the world scenario includes a multitude of body counts. Many great characters did not survive and their final scenes include close-ups and slow motion of their remnants making their sudden demise even more brutal, leaving a gaping hole in the viewer’s heart.
Judith Slaying Holofernes (Artemisia Gentileschi version)
Tumblr media
The painting showed an “uncensored” gory scene of Judith beheading her abuser helped by another woman. It is said that Gentileschi was inspired by her master, Caravaggio. Caravaggio’s version had a different composition and the painting shows Holofernes holding his blood, resembling strings.
Tumblr media
Judith beheading Holofernes (Caravaggio)
Unlike her master, Gentileschi did not hold back nor consider making the painting palatable for the viewer. The more brutal interpretation made the intention behind the painting even clearer. It is one of the strongest depiction of complex independent women and a strong message of feminism in baroque era.

Notre Dame Basilica (Montreal)
Tumblr media
youtube
This gothic style cathedral is located in Quebec City, Montreal. The three-story-tall hall symbolises the church’s power and the huge size of a cathedral has been known to give psychological effects to the devoters. The blue colours represent the sky and heaven, the red colours complemented by gold accents gives a royalty and majestic look. The pillars will reverberate the sound of organs creating an effect of “heavenly sounds”, many believers are attracted to this sound resulting in higher attendance. The design of the cathedral makes the attendees feel small and overwhelmed as if the church attendees are “meeting” God.

Each of the artworks above shows a great amount of research and thoughts poured into the small details. They each have their own unique approach creating unique and impactful results.
