My Happy Marriage Episode 4 Review: Kiyoka Is The Best Husband
I apologize that this review came out late. I’ve been busy with writing chapters for my internet novel Lavender Eyes that I didn’t have time to watch My Happy Marriage until now. While this episode had moments that angered me, it also made me tear up a bit. Also, excuse my language in this review because I don’t have pleasant things to say for some parts of this episode.
Tumblr media
The part that angered me was, of course, the scenes with Miyo’s scumbag family members. Miyo’s family is absolute shit. Her biological father developed no love for his first daughter because she lacked powers. It’s boggling that his love is only worth something if his child has power. What an absolute trash bag of a father he is. The fact that this is can apply to Asian families in real life hurts even more. Because her father finds her worthless, he was the reason why Kaya ended up the spiteful, entitled brat that she is. Miyo’s stepmother is a bitch and it’s because of her that Kaya became the way she is. I don’t care if Kaya’s attitude and behavior is because of how she was raised, she still engaged in abusing her sister and still does it to this day, meaning she enjoys doing it like the psychopathic bitch she is. The fact that she develops a liking to Kiyoka pisses me off even more given how bratty she is. Kaya is exactly the type of girl Kiyoka LOATHES because his previous fiancees were all gold-diggers and only saw him as a way for climb up the social ladder. Kaya only finds his exterior attractive.
Speaking of Kiyoka, he was an absolute JOY to watch. He visits Miyo’s crap family and tells them that if they don’t apologize to Miyo for all the abuse she had to endure from them, he won’t give them anything in return; he’s basically saying that he won’t give them money or associate them as his in-laws. He’s written absolutely well. He’s not someone who miscommunicates with Miyo or is dumb enough to believe in lies. He’s someone who believes in the truth and in love because he loves Miyo.
The fact that he figured out something was wrong with Miyo after she returned from her outing and wanted to do something to bring back the confidence and brightness she had before. He wrote a letter to someone and that was when Hana, Miyo’s former attendant, came to visit her and encouraged her to be confident and content with her current life.
Miyo feeling like she’s happy with her life but then regressing back to her old self was heartbreaking to see. Miyo finally felt like she had a place to belong, but when Kaya came in, everything got ruined. The fact that she decided to hyper fixate on making a hair tie for Kiyoka and looked rather out of it when she was done showed how bad her issues are. The way her voice actress voiced her so soft spoken to the point of being a mumbling robot was extremely good voice acting. Wow. I’m impressed.
The fact that she realized how much she is loved and worth from Hana is so well-written. Sometimes, people in despair just need that extra push to be able to move on. What Miyo needed was encouragement that everything is going to be okay and that she has people who care about her. The way she was moved to tears when she learned that it was her husband-to-be that sent a letter for her to come to the Kudou manor to see her tugged my heart.
She told Kiyoka of her secrets and how that she’s nothing special despite being a daughter of a wealthy family, but he already knew. He doesn’t care and that he only wants her to be his wife. The way he hugged her so tenderly and how she accepted it back made me so emotional. Man, Kiyoka’s such a good man. The fact that he didn’t expect much from Miyo from when he first met her to falling for her gentle soul speaks so much; the fact that she was so different from his previous fiancees speaks so much in volume. Please only let good things happen to them from now on.
Koji’s brother Kazushi makes his debut in this episode. He doesn’t have much screen time, but all that is told from his 1 minute screen time is that he has abilities and that he doesn’t take his responsibilities seriously. He also teased Koji about being too nice to the point of being unkind. I feel like that’s Koji’s character in general. He’s a nice guy, but he didn’t do anything to stop Kaya from abusing Miyo despite being in love with her. I think Kazushi’s role is to foreshadow that aspect of him. Will he be more of a spineless coward in future episodes?
Wow, I wrote a lot for this review. I can’t help it. The episode was such a rollercoaster. I can’t wait for what’s to come next week as it feels as if something bad is going to happen now that Mr. Tatsuishi is trying to use Kaya in his plans to get his hands on Miyo. What are your thoughts on this episode and how much do you want to punch all of Miyo’s abusive family members in the face? I certainly want to beat the crap out of them and have them get a taste of their own medicine.

I swear this scene really pisses me off. It's bad enough the way Kaya spoke to Miyo and Koji just stood by and let it happen, but what frustrates me more is the fact that Koji also believed Miyo was kicked out.
It was obvious based on his facial expression. He assumed the same as Kaya, showing how he looked sorry for Miyo when Kaya was badmouthing her, stating her belief Kiyoka abandoned her.
Tumblr media
He even stated in his own thoughts in the 2nd episode that he too believed Miyo would've been thrown out. (Goes to show how little confidence even Koji had in Miyo himself that JERK!)
Tumblr media
The final nail in the coffin was the shocked look on his face when Yurie appeared and defended Miyo, clearing stating that she was in fact set to become Kiyoka's Wife and therefore had NOT been abandoned as those bastards assumed!

My Happy Marriage Episode 6 Review: Playing With Fire
I am applauding. This is the best episode of the show by far. The way the kidnapping plot gets resolved in one episode, the way Kiyoka comes to rescue his fiancee and the way Miyo stands her ground against her abusive family is just perfection.
Tumblr media
I like the fact that everything isn’t slow paced and that rescuing Miyo actually takes the entire episode and not cut into two parts. It is a bit fast-paced but I’m just glad that nothing felt rushed. It was super satisfying to see everything resolved in one episode but while holding more questions for future episodes. I’m just personally biased because the Saimori family is no more!
The action scenes were amazing. The way the supernatural powers were animated was a treat to see! It shows that these people are special in a way, but Kiyoka is a lot more special for he is the strongest ability user in the current generation. It makes you wonder why Miyo’s dumb dad actually sent over his “reject” daughter to wed him and not the favorite Kaya. It matters not because Miyo is happier and better than Kaya. Though, my only gripes with the action scene is that Mr. Tatsuishi and Miyo’s dad were stupid. Mr. Tatsuishi was the reason why the Saimori manor got caught on fire and Mr. Saimori wasn’t even aware of the kidnapping plot but still helped him out. Talk about idiocy…
The way Kiyoka seems calm but is actually furious on the inside shows with how he behaves in this episode. His rage starts with him destroying the gate and then using lightning on Mr. Tatsuishi and then coldly rejecting Kaya by telling her that he’d never marry a girl like her. In fact, the fact that Kiyoka is not only a fire user, but has other abilities in his arsenal like barriers and conjuring lightning. Since he is the best ability user, having multiple abilities makes sense. However, I do wish Kiyoka was a bit more aggressive. That’s just wishful thinking on my part since I want someone to punch or kick Kaya and her mother. I’m glad that he’s not shallow or dumb and just loves Miyo for who she is.
The way Miyo stands her ground amazed me. If this was Miyo from Episode 1, she’d just give up and apologize, but she’s not the Miyo from before now. She’s a changed girl now! Living with Kiyoka and Yurie helped her realize what happiness is and how precious it is to her. Even if her stepmother and half-sister were beating her, she firmly goes against what they want her to say. The way she fought for her happiness was truly marvelous. Miyo’s trauma might not be fully recovered, but she healed up enough to know that she has someone who loves her and that she loves him back. The way Kiyoka and Yurie were relieved to see her after she awakened was truly warm.
I’m also amazed with how Koji finally stood up to Kaya. He told her that he’s helping her because he loves Miyo and that he doesn’t want her to be sad when someone is hurt. It was very brave of him. I want this guy to be happy with someone who is deserving of him.
I’m curious to see what the second half of the show will bring to the table. There seems to be two new antagonists coming into the picture and they seem to be connected to the Usuba line. The bedridden man seemed to have conspired with Mr. Tatsuishi regarding Miyo’s lineage, but since he failed, it’s time for the bespectacled man to come into the fray. I wonder if the second half of the show will focus around Miyo’s power since it seems that Sumi’s words were hinting at Miyo’s abilities awakening. I do wonder what her abilities are and how powerful they are.
What did you think about how this episode turned out? Was it satisfying for you? Please let me know!

My Happy Marriage Episode 7 Review - Endings and Beginnings
When one door closes, another opens. That’s what this episode technically is about. The door to the conflicts with the Saimori family has come to an end and then a door to a new arc with new conflicts opens. I really like the relaxed nature of this episode and the buildup of ominous things to come towards the end. I think the way the sakura tree stump disintegrated is a good representation of that; Miyo’s reliance on her mother ends as she steps forward into a new beginning with her fiancé.
Tumblr media
The aftermath of the whole kidnapping ordeal ends with the Saimori and Tatsuishi families suffering severe consequences for their actions. The entire Saimori estate is burned to the ground. Mr. and Mrs. Saimori moved to the countryside while Kaya is sent to work as a servant for a strict household. Regarding the Tatsuishis, Mr. Tatsuishi is no longer head of the family; that is passed down to Kazushi now. The Tatsuishi family is now under the control of the Kudou family. I know that many want Miyo’s abusive family to die, but I do think that this is a better result. Falling from grace and then suffering from humiliation for the rest of their lives is the best end the greedy family could have. They all cared about their reputation and wealth, so for them to not have them anymore and whether it would make or break them befits them the best. Whatever happens to them are no longer Miyo and Kiyoka’s issues.
I do like how Kaya’s end is a bit of a foil to Miyo’s beginning. Kaya ends her stint with little luggage and a train ride to her new home where she’ll be treated strictly for a long time. Miyo’s beginning was taking little luggage and a train ride to her new home where she’d meet a strict husband and household, but that was the start of a happiness that will last a long time. It’s ironic in a way that both sisters have that same experience, but with different ends.
Koji also makes his exit as he decides to move to the old capital to train his abilities and to come back a stronger and better man for his family and for his future spouse. It’s unknown whether his marriage to Kaya has been annulled; does Koji even want Kaya? I do like how when Koji first made his appearance, he and Miyo were talking by the lake. For his supposed last appearance, he and Miyo part ways by that same lake. I do like the symbolism. I hope that Koji makes a future appearance and for him to have a cute wife too. He deserves his own happiness.
The end of Miyo’s suffering begins with a peaceful new start as she and Kiyoka finally document their engagement. However, the next step of their marriage process is to meet with Kiyoka’s family. Miyo is worried after learning that the old head of the Kudou family was the one who was sending out proposal requests for Kiyoka. The request for the Saimori household was most likely for Kaya, which is a part of Miyo’s worries as she fears they might be disappointed with her. Kiyoka reassures her that if his father rejects her, he’ll burn him. He’s a future wife guy, seriously. I do like how the marriage isn’t immediate, but takes time. Marriage in general is a long process. I’ve met people who tell me how long and tedious the process is from registering the marriage certificate and then holding a wedding; the whole process itself seems tedious to me.
Meeting the Kudou family formally will have to wait as Miyo wants to get herself educated on how to be a proper lady in order to impress her in-laws. Kiyoka was a bit reluctant at first, but he gives in; he requests that he’d pick out a teacher for her which turns out to be none other than Kiyoka’s older sister, Hazuki Kudou. What? He has an older sister? Miyo is meeting one of her in-laws already? I know that some girls in real life would seethe at the thought of training to be a proper lady, but please remember the time period this story takes place in. Hazuki was educated in a girls school and was once married, so she knows her ins and outs of being a proper lady; also, it’s best to have someone Kiyoka can trust to teach Miyo and not be a conniving person trying to ruin their marriage.
Hazuki is a cool character, I like her a lot. She’s knowledgeable and knows how to have fun. It’s great to see another person adoring Miyo; Miyo deserves all the love. I do like how Hazuki seems to be more into modern society with the way she dresses in western clothes, bobbed hair and has an outgoing demeanor. She’s the very opposite of Miyo, but they still get along well. I do love how she acts like a big sister to both Kiyoka and Miyo. I hope she appears more. She’s fun! I do love how she’s also a stepping stone for Miyo to decide on what sort of person she’ll become; for now, she wants to be someone deserving of Kiyoka.
The ending of the episode was rather unsettling and a huge change of tone from how the rest of the episode was before. The fact that the next conflict the couple will have to deal with seems to be a scary cult makes the Saimoris seem like child’s play now. What are those spirits they summoned? Are those Grotesqueries? Given that this might be the Usuba clan, it makes me worry for what’s to come. What will they do with Miyo? How will they overcome this ordeal? What did you think about this episode as a whole?

My Happy Marriage Episode 1 Review: Taisho Era Cinderella Story
Ah yes, the classic Cinderella story. We get a girl being mistreated by her family after her father gets remarried and then she meets the rich man who will save her from her hell. As cliche as the trope gets, I actually like the trope. I like seeing the lead character be super withdrawn and having that one special person come into their life and make them open up and change them for the better.
Tumblr media
However, there are some interesting things that differs My Happy Marriage from the usual Cinderella story. First off, Miyo, our main character, has her father who got remarried. After the birth of her half-sister Kaya, both her biological father and her stepmother mistreat her and her younger sister looks down on her.
The entire first episode is just making Miyo be in the worst situation possible. Miyo’s daily life is just cleaning. Her childhood sweetheart gets engaged to her younger sister and she gets sent off to be married into another family. You just can’t help but feel bad for Miyo.
Miyo is just a miserable character for now. I feel bad for her. She’s been so emotionally abused that all her personality got sucked out and she’s only a shell for now. I just hope that Kiyoka can bring in some personality into her.
Oh boy, Miyo’s family sucks balls. I did mention that her BIOLOGICAL father neglected her after his remarriage. Her stepmother is also terrible. It sucks that the two only care about Kaya and not Miyo. The only “good” thing her father did for her was buying her a nice kimono for the marriage interview. If you look at the things she had packed, she only had two pairs of clothes. That means her father has never bought her clothes until now. On top of that, he makes Miyo go to her arranged partner’s house ON HER OWN! WITHOUT AN ESCORT! He’s certainly not winning any Father of the Year awards ever. Her stepmother is just awful. She doesn’t care about her stepdaughter at all and it shows. She belittles her whenever she can. Kaya is also a bitch. She just looks down on her and sneers at her whenever she can. Like, the way she looked at Miyo as she was getting engaged to Koji made me want to punch her so bad. She just seems like an entitled bitch. Don’t tell me she’s going to go after Kiyoka when she learns that he’s a better catch?
Miyo’s childhood friend Koji seems like the only one who’s genuinely nice to her, but not even he can stand up to his family. It sucks that the only light in Miyo’s life has to be taken away. It seems that his family is quite powerful because he cannot choose who to marry and such. It sucks that society back then was like this. It just feels heartbreaking to know how many bonds have been broken due to arranged marriages and the powerlessness to prevent them.
I’m also curious to why they arranged her to meet Kiyoka. Did they request her? I don’t think this was ever explained. Her father was like “Here, go to this man’s house. Get married. Bye,” and refuses to elaborate. Who set this up?
My opinion on Kiyoka is nothing right now; he just appeared towards the end of the episode. How am I supposed to make an opinion about that? I just hope he’s a nice guy. Miyo needs some good people in her life.
The anime is super pretty, though! I love the background details like the cherry blossom tree, the water and the trains. Given that Western clothes existed and there are trains, I’m assuming this show takes place during the Taisho era? Because I get reminded of Demon Slayer since that show’s setting takes place in the Taisho era too.
The voice acting is great! Reina Ueda voices Miyo and she does a great job with the soft-spoken tone. Ayane Sakura voicing Kaya was good too. Sakura is a versatile voice actress. She can be the sweetest thing ever or she can dish out the haughty bitch voice with relative ease. Kana Ueda voices Miyo’s stepmom and I’m not used to her voicing an adult since I’m always more familiar with her cutesy roles. I think that the biggest mindblowing role is Kaito Ishikawa in his 5 minute screen time. I’m usually familiar with Ishikawa playing loud, brash and hot-blooded characters so for him to voice a stoic, stern man like Kiyoka is going to take some time for me to get used to.
Overall, Miyo deserves a happy life. I do wonder when the supernatural elements will be implemented into the story since the first episode is just showcasing how bad Miyo’s life is and that she gets sent off to marriage. This is an adaptation of a rather popular light novel series. Maybe I should give it a read when I get the chance.

My Happy Marriage Episode 2 Review: Supernatural World Building
First off, I want to correct myself on something. Last episode, I said that the anime took place in Taisho Era? Someone on Tumblr corrected me, saying that the anime actually takes place in Meiji era. Thank you to the person who corrected me.
Tumblr media
Anyways, this episode is about Miyo adjusting to her life in the Kudou manor. She makes breakfast for her fiancé, but he refuses to eat, suspecting it to be poisoned. Fortunately, he regrets his actions and tries her breakfast the next day; he really enjoys her miso soup, to her surprise.
We learn more about Kiyoka and Miyo throughout this episode. Miyo is someone who lived such a harsh life. Her family is a prominent family with supernatural abilities, but she did not receive any, hence her mistreatment towards her biological father and her stepmother. As a child, she was a bit straightforward as she was looking for mementos of her mother that had gone missing; she had suspected her stepmother and it caused her to be locked in a storage room. Damn, I hate Miyo’s family so much. I think what the most heart wrenching moment was the fact that Kaya was able to see Grotesqueries and her biological father starts doting on her than his first daughter. I just want to punch all three of them.
The abuse has caused her to be so withdrawn that she had to apologize to protect herself. I can actually relate to the apologizing; I once had a bad habit of apologizing a lot when I was a teenager because I had hurt my friends who in turn decided to isolate me. Because I didn’t want to feel hurt again, most of my teenage years was spent me apologizing out of habit. Kiyoka even said that apologizing loses its meaning if constantly said, which is super understandable; I apologized so much that I was wondering if my apologies were actually genuine once I reached my early twenties. Fortunately, I am no longer apologetic now. It was a bad habit to break out of.
Kiyoka seemed like a jerk at first, but it was understandable why he was doubtful. He explained to Yurie that his past fiancees only wanted wealth and status from him, which is a turn off for him. It also seems that he’s the commander of an Anti-Grotesquerie unit. I guess this explains the premise of the show—fighting grotesqueries? Kiyoka has supernatural abilities which he can use easily; it even has convenient usage like heating up a bath. I’m glad that Kiyoka knows that his words had hurt Miyo, so he made it up to her by eating her breakfast. It seems that he is quite interested in her background as she doesn’t look like a daughter from a prominent family.
Yurie is very sweet. She has known Kiyoka the longest so she knows what sort of person he is. She even tells Miyo that he is actually a kind person underneath his ice. Since Miyo didn’t run off, it makes me wonder how many fiancees didn’t listen to Yurie’s words and just ran off.
Meanwhile, at the Saimori house, Miyo’s old room is being used as a storage room. Kouji is determined to protect Miyo however he can. However, it also seems as if the Tatsuishi family was wanting Miyo to marry Kouji and not Kaya as she has Usuba blood or something. It seems that Miyo’s a lot more special than she seems…
I want to talk about the voice acting. It’s amazing. Reina Ueda is known for her soft tone, but to make Miyo a bit older, she makes her voice a bit deeper, but still has her signature soft voice perfect for a soft-spoken person like Miyo. I can hear Ueda also sounding lifeless which also fits Miyo. Kaito Ishikawa is nailing it as Kiyoka. I’ve never heard him use such a calm voice and I think he should get more roles like this in the future! It’s so nice to listen too!
I’m honestly enjoying this anime. I can’t wait to see more now that we have a bit more world-building withe the insertion of Grotesqueries, supernatural abilities and so forth. I can’t wait to see what it is that makes Miyo so special. Most of all, I want to see Kiyoka warm up to Miyo and for Miyo to open up to him. I can see potential!

My Happy Marriage Episode 5 Review: Suspenseful Happiness
I knew that Kaya and Mr. Tatsuishi were going to plan something nefarious. I’m just surprised it happened all in one episode. Some stories like to drag out these sort of plot devices in order to build suspense, but I’m glad that this writer chose to do everything fast-paced. There’s still suspense, but nothing is rushed.
Tumblr media
I do love the fact that this episode was building up the ominous moments by giving readers happy moments to distract them from what’s to come. The happier moments being the moments that Miyo invited Godou to dinner to show her appreciation for escorting Hana to the Kudou manor. The whole segment was cute. Godou was especially adorable with the way he teased Kiyoka by asking Miyo to dump her fiancé and to marry him instead. Other happy moments revolve around Miyo and Kiyoka and they’re always cute.
I think the way Miyo is smiling more shows how much more comfortable she is becoming around her new life and she can even put on her own makeup now! I’m glad that she’s growing much happier.
However, one mysterious aspect about Miyo is that she has nightmares. It makes me wonder if these ominous dreams are a sign that her Usuba bloodline is awakening and that she was always a ability-user but a dormant one all this time. I wonder how her family would react once they see that she was an ability user all along.
The suspense building up around Miyo’s kidnapping was actually pretty nerve-racking. First, we see Kaya getting all jealous because Miyo has a happy life and a handsome and wealthy husband which infuriates her. I had a feeling she’d be trying to find a way to sabotage this and I was right. However, what Kaya doesn’t know is that Mr. Tatsuishi is actually playing her a fiddle. He’s using her insecurities to manipulate her; she has unknowingly become a pawn in all of this. This is when greed blinds you; that’s why it’s one of the seven sins.
Then after that, Miyo gets kidnapped by mysterious forces that used an ability to conceal themselves. No matter what era you’re in, fiction or reality, getting kidnapped by strangers in a black car will always be scary. I’ve seen some people criticize Yurie for not being able to do anything to help, but remember that she’s an old lady and that shock prevents people from thinking rationally.
To be honest, I think the MVP of this episode has to be Koji. He actually steps up and reprimands his father for not doing anything about the abuse Miyo had endured. The fact that his powers became strong at the moment of anger and tried to rebel against his father was cool in itself! The way the furniture coalesced and how he tried to aim it at his father before the latter stopped it was a cool scene. The fact that Koji, who usually steps back and doesn’t speak up in crucial moments finally decides to step up and plead to Kiyoka to help him rescue Miyo was amazing in itself.
However, I am worried that Koji might die. He may be a coward, but he’s decent. If someone has to die in this upcoming confrontation, I want it to be Mr. Tatsuishi and the Saimori family. Kiyoka’s going to become one heck of an arsonist. Burn them all, Kiyoka! I’ll be rooting for you!
Will Kiyoka rescue Miyo in the next episode or will this plot point be dragged out for 2-3 episodes? What are your thoughts on this episode?
