Stranger Things: Absorption, Ghosts, and Loss of Self

Part 1: No Longer Henry

So...there's another thing I want to talk about re: Henry Creel, and that's this concept of the unfortunate side effect of his abilities: absorption. I want to talk about this in connection to the very heavily used concept of ghosts in ST4.

Disclaimer: I need you all to bear with me through this. I am not absolving Henry of anything he's done, because the choices he's made are still that: his choices. I'm just here to explore the whys and hows.

We know, from canon, that Henry absorbs everything about a person when he kills them. This isn't limited to energy or abilities, but likely extends to personality, habits, and tendencies.

This very well could explain why his personality and behavior do a full 180º after he kills the guards, orderlies, and numbers (from the DnD lore post here). Before then, he seemed like a generally normal guy (or, however normal a guy in his situation can be).

That is to say, before the massacre:

He didn't display outwardly violent tendencies: He quite literally cringes and looks incredibly disturbed when Brenner shocks 002.

He seemed to want the best for El: In the tunnel scene, he sends her off knowing full well he won't fit. In the Soteria scene, he doesn't immediately kill her while she's still in the dark re: his supposed intentions.

He didn't display any pedophilic behaviors: He puts himself on equal footing with El in many scenes (the plinko scene, the chess scene, the tunnel and Soteria scenes) rather than encroaching and looming over her the way Brenner and his abusive orderlies do.

When they get into the beginning of the massacre, when he's up against guards, his kills are quick, bloodless, and relatively painless. They're kills of necessity, not of desire for revenge. He's not splattered in blood after those kills.

Then, he tucks El away for safe-keeping in the supply closet. He's still planning on setting her free. He's still mostly Henry. Mostly. Watch that wording, it'll be important later.

The next time we see him, we've passed through an utterly gruesome crime scene. Children are bloodied and mangled. Orderlies have been thrown so hard against walls that the walls behind their heads cracked. Keep that in mind for later.

Henry? He's covered in blood. Not only that, he's had a hairstyle change. He now looks more similar to Brenner. Keep that in mind for later.

He's also done a complete 180º in personality. We think "Oh, so he's finally taken off the mask", right? Not necessarily.

This is our later. This is me bringing back those earlier bits.

Henry absorbs when he kills, completely and fully.

After Soteria: He's still Henry.

After the guards: He's still mostly Henry, but he's got their violent edge. He's less restrained in his killing, hence the appearance of blood in his methods.

This is where I want to talk more in-depth about the orderlies. We see the orderlies abuse Henry. We see it on screen. We see them electrocuting Henry, we see them slam his head back so hard that he falls unconscious and bleeds from his ears. The most realistic explanation for that? A skull fracture. We see them crack his goddamn skull. We know they're sadistic, and that they, alongside Brenner, are resposible for the majority of all the abuse that's been done to Henry in the lab. Physical, emotional, mental, and sexual.

When Henry kills the orderlies, he does to them what they did to him: He cracks them against the wall. He slams them down so hard they break.

Unfortunately, when he kills them, he absorbs them. He absorbs their sadism, their inclination for violence and cruelty, and their pedophilic nature.

Let's bring this back to him in the rainbow room.

After the orderlies: He kills the numbers in the most horrifying manner yet. It's bloody and invasive and painful, and entirely unlike what we saw in his first kills. He's changing. He looms over El the way Brenner and the orderlies, our resident pedophiles, did. He touches her face in a way that reeks of Brenner. He's no longer just Henry.

Here, I want to take us back to the skull fracture, and I want to bring in Phineas Gage from ST2. When the rod went through Gage's head, it fractured his skull and caused a complete shift in personality. This gave him the nickname "No Longer Gage". Putting this in Henry's context: When the orderlies, torturing Henry with electrocution rods, slammed his head down...it fractured his skull. When he runs into them during the escape attempt, he takes revenge by cracking their skulls and killing them in the process. He absorbs them...and he is "No Longer Henry."

The Henry we see in the rainbow room is no longer Henry; rather, it is no longer just Henry. It is Henry, plus all the people who have ever abused him, combined. This accounts for the man we see today, the complete reversal of his original self, the one El can't bring herself to go with, and the one who's now perpetuating the abuse he suffered onto others.

A Side Note:

One thing I do want to touch on alongside this, which I was reminded of by watchmenanon in the replies to this post, is that Henry was very much set up for this situation.

I believe I've talked about it before, but it may have just been in the server with aemiron-main, so I'll cover it here:

Henry was in Brenner's clutches since before he knew Brenner existed. The Creel massacre happened, and Henry was taken away to the lab, where he was systematically broken down and built back up to believe he was a monster, an apex predator, all along. This is exactly what Brenner wanted. It took a while and a fair amount of work, but eventually Henry was put in a situation where he could escape, where he could take revenge and that brainwashing about being a predator would come into fulfillment.

Henry very much wanted to kill those guards and orderlies. That was never in question. He was 100% doing that of his own free will, even if he'd been moved like a chess piece into that position by Brenner.

Brenner just didn't expect El to yeet Henry into the hell dimension immediately after the massacre/prophecy fulfillment. This is where his "what have you done" comes in. Brenner knew El didn't do any of that. Y'know what she did do?

She unleashed an apex predator with next to no way to bring it back or control it

She yeeted Brenner's little pet into the hell dimension

She was the wrench in the plan, and it's why Brenner was having her look for Henry so hard in the first place. He's trying to fix a mistake borne of his own hubris.

To be clear: Lab-era Henry very much wanted to absorb those powers, but he wanted to do it because he'd been abused and manipulated. I don't believe he wanted to absorb any of the others, though, because he didn't display any tendencies like theirs before the massacre of 1979. I think he wanted them dead, definitely, but I don't think he'd want to absorb the personalities and urges of those who abused him. If we can expose the truth and walk back the brainwashing...who knows.

All this to say...Henry Creel's original self died years ago. His original self died the night Brenner took him, the night of the Creel massacre. "Just Henry" lived in the lab. During the massacre in 1979, though, something new took his place: "Henry et. al". We just need to reach Henry.

Thinking about setting up a new fish tank, so I wanted to know if you have a favorite kinda of aquarium plant? Also, have you ever given your bettas tankmates (snails, shrimp, small schoolers, etc)

oh WEEE! i absolutely love anubias, so hardy you can do no wrong and they look lovely. i also love a dwarf water lily, and for bettas a sword is a must imo, nice broad leaves that grow tall.

tank mates comes down to personality. i wouldn't do a school in anything smaller than a 15g, but lots of betta make great community fish with enough room. i see the most success with corys as tank mates, since they occupy the bottom where bettas sit at the top. also everyone loves corys they so chill. i did have a girl, Ladybird, do very well with 8 harlequin rasboras in a 10g, but they outgrew it so fast; i really caution putting any school in a 10g or smaller, they need way more space than you realize. MAYBE chili rasboras, but those are so small they're easily bullied/picked off.

all my bettas have snails. for larger snails like mysteries, the main problem i see is nipping antenae. the only betta i have who doesn't do this is plinko my big fin lazy boy, his large snails THRIVE. but pest snails are pretty much always fine. nerites also do awesome imo, they're better protected than other big snails.

shrimp i put a huge caution tape on. again, plinko the lazy pants leaves his 2 amanos alone, and even my otherwise feisty work betta boy doesn't care about his amanos, but both my females were KILL ON SIGHT when i tried to introduce some. i've never tried cherry shrimp and hear similar mixed success, along with stories of bettas being initially fine with them, then wiping out a colony overnight. the main reason i discourage shrimp is cuz those thangs expensive. you don't wanna give your betta a 7.99 snack.

He found the soup pot among his things and went to get the fire started again. "Probably scared the daylights out of them either way. A cloaked figure, a gravely voice, some utter gibberish they're already too frightened to try and make sense of-"

A snore.

Narndir turned to find his friend slumped over on the bedroll, propped up by his satchel. Shaking his head, he got up to fetch one of his blankets. The camp could house two tonight. Meneldir needed a good night's sleep just as badly as he needed a friend.

LOLLL I'VE ACTUALLY BEEN A FAN OF ANCIENT MAGUS' BRIDE since like... idk... high school? I think I reread the manga maybe half a year ago and I decided to check out the anime after a conversation with kitsoa about how witch hat atelier might be adapted into animation and she mentioned the lighting and effects in ancient magus' bride and honestly it was really great! they definitely cut a lot out to make the anime work but I think they did such a good job paring it down. all the loose ends were wrapped up etc. etc.

I think if the tag were more populated I'd probably have become more invested in it but unfortunately the elias hornyposting is not really doing it for me. I actually really wanted to make fanart for it at one point but then I chickened out because I was like "idk man... does anyone even care abt them..." (I have a soft spot for the spider girl and the gorgon guy in the college arc... I forget their names but you know what I'm talking about.)

I've only watched the first season because when I was reading it I kinda lost the plot halfway through the college arc and like. I know I won't understand it if I just have it in the corner of my screen as I draw LMAO

The thing that stood out most to me in the anime is the sound design and music... that shit's crazy... you know how in hbomb's patho video he talks about how well maybe sometimes video games aren't supposed to be fun. maybe sometimes they're supposed to convey futility and your lack of control. and I think this is exactly how I feel about the magus bride soundtrack (at least some of it)

There are very few songs I would listen to from the soundtrack just on my own BUT it all works extremely well in context. sometimes the music is tickling you in an uncomfortable way at the base of your neck and that's exactly what it's supposed to do. it's so good at conveying the feeling of something uncanny and not quite right

and YES the takayama chise parallels... ohhh you want to save people so bad to the point of hurting yourself... taking kamoda's shot from him is SO chisecore of him tbh. personally I've always seen elias as closer to takayama than chise in the sense that the only version of himself he's ever really known was something that wasn't quite here nor there. but I do think takayama and elias have character arcs that go in different directions. elias "then I've got to stop being a monster" ainsworth versus takayama "ascent into christhood" sou etc. etc. (I guess elias's arc is more similar to souji from kekkaishi's, huh...?)

uh I do have to say that I really enjoy that chise is suffering consequences from her actions though. like you know I think takayama should suffer consequences more I think that would be interesting. like everything just slides off him and that's very takayama but I think it would be fun. you know. if he got thrown down the plinko once in a while. like now that you've pointed this out I DO have a longing for takayama coughing up blood etc. but then again birdmen was never about limits, it was about the lack thereof so I guess that's understandable... ah...

Well it's not so much of an "obscure character" since the KH4 trailer, but considering only KHUX, then Strelitzia. Do I even have to explain myself? She's so sweet and kind and she absolutely did not deserve this. I don't think she would have been able to change Player's mind though, even if she managed to talk to them. But she was convinced that she should try despite everything, and I admire her for that. I can't wait to see more of her in kh4.

Rodimus for the Bingo

The only character I hate more than Drift, but unlike Drift (who I mostly hate for meta reasons like being boring, Mary Sue-ish, and other personal things), I actually hate Rodimus due to specific things he did in the story and how those were never really addressed at all XD

(Copious Rodimus hate under the cut, if he's your comfort character and you're sensitive about him then definitely don't read.)

Maybe hate is a strong word? I don't have like, a burning hatred for him like he's evil and horrible and should just die. I hate him like... I want to beat him up and steal his lunch money. I want to bully him until he cries and then laugh at him. I want to marry Optimus just so that I can give him mommy issues to match his daddy issues. I want that twink obliterated.

Like it's just so fucking funny to me because the IDW fandom in general is like "haha Rodimus is a funny himbo twink that's silly and stupid" but then I read his story and THE WAY PEOPLE TALK ABOUT HIM DIDN'T WARN ME that Rodimus does shit like be jealous of anyone who's more popular/well liked than him (literally being happy Thunderclash is dying), tell Chromedome to perform mnemosurgery on an unconscious person without their consent (imagine having fewer moral scruples than fucking MEGATRON) despite the fact that it was killing Chromedome AND Rewind didn't want Chromedome to risk his health, imprisoning Getaway under absolutely horrific conditions that not even mechs like Overlord had to suffer... Using Rung as living bait was kind of sus too even though Rodimus never intended for Rung to actually be harmed. Oh also when Overlord escaped the Lost Light, Rodimus seemed more butthurt about how HE didn't get to be the heroic one saving the ship than he was about respecting the lost lives of the people killed during his escape. Imagine being so egotistical that you're more concerned about yourself during a period of mourning than you are the crew members you're responsible for.

Oh, and on top of that he's inattentive, lazy, can't keep up with the basic logistical responsibilities of running a ship, and doesn't respect his officers (mostly Magnus). Not only is he a POS insecure little brat, he can't even handle the basic responsibilities that come with leadership. He can't even listen to Roller complaining to him about Chromedome/Rewind violating his bodily integrity without being completely apathetic and literally saying he doesn't care. BEING A LEADER MEANS LISTENING TO PEOPLE'S COMPLAINTS AND RESOLVING PERSONAL DISPUTES AND ACTING AS IF YOU CARE EVEN IF YOU'RE TIRED AND DON'T WANT TO DEAL WITH IT. Rodimus wants all of the glory of being a leadership without wanting the burdens and responsibilities that come with it, whether they're large or small, and as someone who has had a couple leadership positions in my life that frankly disgusts me lmao. He's a manchild who wants to stay in the kitchen but can't take the heat and gets mad when other people are more liked than him. Because people like Thunderclash and Optimus are actually smart, talented, charismatic, heroic, and responsible, while he's just a little brat who's lead around life by his own tender, easily bruised ego. Lol. Lmao.

No wonder half the ship fucking mutinied. Rodimus is like the worst captain ever and LITERALLY THE ONLY REASON HE WASN'T REMEMBERED AS A SHIT CAPTAIN is because Getaway was an even more garbage piece of shit captain (which I've already made multiple posts regarding how I think Getaway was massively wasted as a character).

Rodimus is just a fucking awful person hiding under a cheerful facade. He's a little bitch and I want to yeet him into a horse plinko. He's a sad, strange little man, and he has my pity.

I was spontaneously hit with inspiration earlier this week for a Taco Dragon post, so here it is! No previews, no warning, late at night because I'm weird like that! Who needs optimal posting hours, anyway?

So here it is...

Red Bean and Cream Cheese Chimichangas!

Buckle up, folks, there are a lot of components to cover here because pretty much every aspect of this is homemade!

For the filling, I made some red bean paste, as previously seen in my empanadas. They're a sweet stand-in for refried beans.

The cream cheese filling is quite simple:

8 oz. block cream cheese

½ c sugar

½ tsp vanilla extract

Cream together with an electric mixer.

To contain the fillings, I couldn't decide between two choices, so I made both!

First up is crepes! I used Alton Brown's recipe for the batter with the sweet variant and made a valiant attempt in my large nonstick skillet:

As you can see, I still need practice. Still a valiant first attempt, I think!

Also, as it turns out, sweet tortillas are, in fact, a thing! I made some using the following ingredients:

2 c all purpose flour

⅔ c warm milk (microwave for 30-45 seconds)

¼ c vegetable shortening (or fat of your choice)

2½ tbsp sugar

½ tsp salt

Mix together by hand, divide into balls, roll em flat, and cook in a hot skillet. We've done tortillas here before.

Side note: these things are fucking great, and I would heartily recommend making them and using them for sweet applications! Perhaps dessert quesadillas, or just warm with some butter and cinnamon sugar or jam.

For toppings, we have Mexican style chocolate sauce and whipped cream.

For the chocolate sauce

1 c sugar

½ c unsweetened cocoa powder

¼ tsp cinnamon

¼ tsp cayenne pepper

Pinch of salt

½ c cold water

1 ½ tsp vanilla extract

Whisk the dry ingredients together in a saucepan, mix in the water and vanilla, and heat to a simmer, stirring frequently. Pour into a container and allow to cool.

I forgot to get a picture of it in the saucepan, so this will have to do.

For the whipped cream:

1 c whipped cream

2 tbsp sugar

I'm going to officially suggest using an electric mixer to get the proper consistency, but I decided to whisk it by hand like a badass:

(My arm only hurt a little bit afterward lol)

Anyway, onto assembly and frying!

Of course, we need an obligatory cross section, one for each of the wrap styles:

The crepe was definitely more fragile but did give a nice crispy finish. Meanwhile, the tortilla provided a more robust crunch and overall felt more suited to the task of standing up to the hot oil and keeping everything contained.

Oh, and one more thing:

Happy early birthday, Nikky! I actually was inspired independent of that, but I figured it would be a nice tie-in! I mean, it's no Horse Plinko cake, and the sauce and cream didn't quite cooperate to be as photogenic as I wanted, but I hope you like it anyway!

Okay, enough of that, y'all want to know how this tasted.

Well, it's sweet fillings and flatbread deep fried and covered in chocolate sauce and whipped cream. In other words: quite good! I actually really appreciated the presence of the cream cheese here. The tang cut through the sweetness and richness nicely, so I'm glad I included it.

glup shitto (obscure fave, character that can appear in the background for 0.2 seconds and I won’t shut up about it for a week): Dot and Larryyyyyy, I love them they're so great (Larry's "I'm BISEXUAL!" is just *chef's kiss* iconic)

poor little meow meow (“problematic”/unpopular/controversial/otherwise pathetic fave): Honestly I stopped paying attention to character controversy because I Don't Care anymore, so idek. I'm sure some people still think that me liking Patton is problematic while others would think that me liking Janus is problematic, honestly this fandom doesn't have as clear cut Villains as a lot of other properties, and CERTAINLY doesn't have many Hated Characters TM, so it's harder to nail down what's considered controversial.

horse plinko (character I would torment for fun, for whatever reason): Oh where do I start? Patton, he's always somehow the target of my angst, also Virgil because he's my favorite and I like to torment my favorites, and Logan and Roman have STRONG angst potential as well...plus I wrote that whole naga!Janus whump....honestly I just Like to Horse Plinko my characters, period. it's why @ironwhumper359 exists.

hnnn.... bbbbasil. I really love Sunny as well, but because I've been musing a lot about Basil through rp stuff, he's on my mind a lot. He's just a little guy, you see, and also has his mental illness and severe trauma that he has to work through. We don't see a lot of his thoughts in game, so that leaves a lot of room to fill in the blanks with endless headcanons for me to get attached to. He's a little guy with emotions too big to contain.

Keeper of the Castle. There seems to be so much symbolism going on with this thing, even if I don't understand every aspect of it. They're such an interesting and mysterious creature. What they expand on in the Hikikomori route is just really neat, especially 'cause it's not something you'd ever see in the main route.

Basil is the very obvious choice, so I'm gonna pick Omori. He doesn't hate Sunny. He's not a malicious entity. He's protective, he was made as a coping mechanism to keep Sunny safe. Sunny is self destructive, and so that's how Omori is. It's not some struggle for control over Sunny's body, Omori isn't an evil split personality. He's an avatar. He's a construct. He cares for Sunny, because that is his role. It's such a good dynamic that I haven't really seen talked about in this way.

Hero. He's gone through so much as a teenager, and then gets destroyed again when he learns the truth. Very tasty angst there. It's fun to think about what would cause the face of mr. perfect to crack in front of everyone, not just Kel.

because, as terrible as they can be you don't want to see what they will become without the oaths "oaths did not require trust, that was a truth the imperium had taught him" they all know this will end badly but the only other option is to let go of the thing they're clinging to and meanwhile ahriman is crashing after the combat/magic high and is feeling guilty okay straight up suicide ideation see what i mean, he needs to be transplanted into an entirely different universe and put in horse plinko there failing that, i still think a sun lamp and cat would help time for ahriman to spend time with tolbek's rubricae i'm sure this will help cheer him up

this, too, is overwhelming pride assuming you are the worst ever and responsible for everything, is just as much pride as assuming you are the best to believe that you are alone the architect of everything it's a terrible defence against the thought that maybe you couldn't have done anything at all ahriman is trapped in the "im the worst/im the best" cycle

it's a hard thing to accept because it means you didn't have the control you thought you did over the situation

gee i wonder what might be a theme like half the cast gets bad feelings abot this the entire psychic part of the cast do they stop? no lol Ahriman answer questions or draw 20 lol this book in a nutshell:

to be honest, it's why i was basically done with the series (before the third book even) because it was just the same thing over and over again the supporting cast was what kept me but like, essentially ahriman's character arc is done in book 1 this is what i mean when i say i don't think ahriman can be fixed, i think even if there was irrefutable proof that he'd been puppeted by tzeentch, he would just refuse to see it though he's not quite there yet at this point i think he could probably have been fixed in this book unfortunately this is wh40k and this is his negative character arc "ask yourself what you truly wish to know: the truth, or the lie that forgives you your choices?" man

okay, hear me out how to fix ahriman and save astraeos, carmenta, and astraeos' bros: warp storm causes them to time travel a lot further than intended i kind of want to throw them at a potential blorbo (next book i might be reading) but idk enough about him yet to see if he's actually valid, i have a few ideas for him (it's tax evasion pirate man, the meme the legend, the guy named after one of the best great lakes) okay I'm memeing here but astraeos thinks about ahriman's eyes in order to calm down because he's getting magic headaches man everyone thinks about ahriman's eyes so much

oh, ouch, the last thing Magnus said to him before banishing him was "You are the best of my sons, you always were" moment of silence after the memory ends where everyone is trying to mentally process this, ahriman smiles weakly man, he'd be so great in another setting, unfortunately he's here

in the end ahriman just jumps from one type of pride to another with no stops in between to learn humility but also i mean it's hard when there are forces (tzeentch) that are actively (tzeentch) poking him into this shape honestly, i am starting to get a bit fed up with him, though it's idw optimus but less rage inducing (because it's better writing lol) and i get that it's part of the point of the setting but there's only so much i can take of this cycle tbh i knew i'd hit this point eventually, it's just making it frustrating at times to read his POV mainly because I know what's coming lol ahriman and kadin think the same thing about astraeos

at least astraeos does get out of the cycle eventually oh boy horror movie time in the dark meanwhile, ahriman summons a daemon with astraeos' help daemon is fun takes the form of his dead brother and then goes through how he died

interesting ahriman's experience with the dark mechanicum is that they tend to lose their emotions and humanity vs carmenta who is becoming more emotional the longer she mind melds with her ship more light motifs so, astraeos wants answer about why his brothers died, or worse than died ahriman: i made a mistake astraeos: just one? owo a hint astraeos' chapter gets special darkvision powers now which primarch could be their founder….. next up ahriman: let's steal ourselves a navigator
