This is not my usual type of post, but it is something that I believe is important and I feel that talking about something through a misunderstanding with dolls can be a chance to educate people in this community!

I am not a Twitter/X user (I hear the doll community is especially brutal on there) but I was sent these tweets. I mean absolutely no hate to the original poster of these tweets, these were sent to me cropped so I am unsure of who op is or if there is more to the story, so please forgive me if I have missed something.

Op is saying “oh…” because the doll is a wheelchair user, but on the box art the doll is seen standing.

I can see why this may be seen as a problem, and it’s likely that op is someone who thinks of wheelchair users as completely wheelchair bound, which many people do so I don’t blame them (if I saw this doll a few years ago even I may have been upset my her standing). But not every wheelchair user is completely unable to walk and/or stand, this is called being an ambulatory wheelchair user.

This tweet of theirs followed up:

I do agree with op, I highly doubt that this shein/temu brand doll was trying to “represent” an ambulatory wheelchair user, this was likely a fluke that she happened to be drawn standing. But it is not necessarily a bad thing or an ableist action.

Many wheelchair users are ambulatory; whether that means they can only stand from their wheelchair to grab something high up, or they can go for a walk three days in a row before they flare up and have to rely on their mobility aids to get around. These individuals are still disabled and are still wheelchair users.

To be completely honest, I do not care that Defa Lucy is standing, I’m more curious about how she moves as she has no access to her wheels, nor a control panel? To me, that is a poor design choice, even if she is just a doll and can’t move the wheels on her own so there is no “practical use” of the access, it is a significantly more incorrect design choice than her just being drawn standing up. (Not that I think the brand cares about portraying this topic accurately in any way, however, I feel one is more realistic than the other, even if it is “just a doll.”)

Pls elaborate on Verosika’s design

Okay, so Verosika’s design.

(I collected these images, feel free to use this if you need, no worries about credit)

I will preface this by saying I am no character designer. I’m just going to talk about the issues I see in her design.

Verosika’s succubus design isn’t perfect. It does fall victim to the Vivziepop effect, being overcluttered and in some ways making little sense. But, it’s recognizable. She has a solid silhouette, a color palette that works, and the clothes make sense for what her job and character are. I think her Spring Broken outfit could use some improvement- I do like her boots and jacket, but I think her outfit design is too busy. The star on her dress doesn’t make sense, and one of her left glove looks dumb being the only one with the X pattern (I think both should be solid white.) Her Ozzie’s outfit is fine, but also has the skirt design flaw (I know all her outfits so far have some kind of design in that area, I get why, it still looks dumb.) Her hair is too busy for me but fine for the overall look.

Then, there’s her human design. I think they translated her facial/body designs well, or as well as they could given what they were working with. Her hair is where one of my first complaints comes in- why does she have brunette roots? That doesn’t pay homage to any aspect of her main design, and just adds an extra thing for the overworked animators to deal with. It looks stupid too, and don’t get me wrong, I love me some stylized roots in character design, but it doesn’t work here at all. I think the rest of her hair is fine. Just fine. Not remarkable or even very good. Just alright. Her dress on the other hand is genuinley really bad and takes away from the overall look. It looks like something a 15 year old would get from Shein. The way they did the ruffles makes it look very childish. And the heart makes even less since in this context. The detatched sleeve just looks dumb. And the random scrap of fabric hanging off her skirt? Why?? I like that they kept her boots, but they don’t match the outfit anymore. I did some light research and found some outfits I thought could of worked better/ had more Verosika vibes.

Here's chapter 1 of a researcher x subject story I came up with. This will be a bit of a slow burn and warnings will be posted for each update

Aegis

Chapter 1: Promotion

It's my first day since I got promoted from data control to actual researcher technician, and if I'm being honest, I can't tell if fear or excitement is winning. In data control, we just organized the researchers’ notes and pulled out files when they were called up. Now that I'm a research tech, I get to work directly with all the bizarre creatures and entities in our facility.

When I first accepted the data control job, my friends and family were all too eager to learn more about the mysterious organization I'd work for. I simply told them it was like a real life SCP foundation. I wasn't lying, but none of them took me seriously. Especially since I'm not allowed to share any details without compromising the confidentiality of the organization.

I now stand at the main entry gate to AEGIS, the world's maximum security prison and research institute for supernatural or otherworldly entities. I walk to the large tungsten door and complete the 5 step security code processing unit, which consists of a retinal, audial, and palm scan, on top of a 16 digit personal access code. Once inside the building, I'm given my Oculus. The Oculus is a specially designed eye piece that allows me to detect what is real and what may be being manipulated by one of the entities in the facility.

As soon as my Oculus is secured and synced, I navigate my way to the Director of Entity Research. When I enter his office, I see piles of strewn paperwork and files stacked haphazardly on any surface available. I then take note of the manl sat at a half covered cedar desk, dressed in khakis, a well fit baby blue dress shirt and a labcoat. The D.E.R. is a tall, sturdily built man, I'd guess in his early 50s, named Maxwell Shein. He's muscular, but still has some of the pudge typical of a middle aged man.

“Good morning Mr. Shein. My name is Alexia Wolfe. I was just transferred from Data Control.”

He immediately lowers the lid of his laptop and greets me with a bright grin.

“Good morning Miss Wolfe. It's a pleasure to have you in our research department. I see that before you joined the AEGIS you had worked for an animal rehabilitation clinic in the Rockies, is that correct?”

“Yes, sir. I was responsible for daily feedings and veterinary check ups.”

“Splendid. That type of background is precisely why I wanted you. I'd like to have you working with the entities in sector 6. These creatures are our more earth-like entities and for the most part are more cooperative. Although, I must warn you about a certain few that you'll want to be cautious of. Entities 41, 63, and 005 are particular menaces. “

“ In what way, sir?”

“Each entity's abilities and tendencies are recorded in their briefing file, which will be waiting for you at the security checkpoint.”

SHEIN claims to use many recycled materials but there is no proof of this happening. Their clothes are generally made with virgin synthetic materials.

They run SHEIN X that connects designers with marketing and manufacturing tools in order to grow their businesses.

SHEIN also claims to distribute gifts to front line manufacturing workers and to help the children of workers access education.

Their clothes run from XS-4XL depending on the section and prices are generally under 10 dollars.
