I've gone over a lot of my thoughts on the sequels in my responses to the last two asks you've sent me about them, so I'm going to skip ahead to my thoughts on Luke at this point since I think my feelings on the Sequels in general are pretty clear. I'm glad you enjoyed them, but I've seen the entire trilogy through twice now and I WAS trying to be more generous the second time around to see if my opinion would change and it uh. Didn't. I still don't like them and I still find them a massive mess of squandered potential.

Luke's quotes about the Jedi in the sequels (which are really ONLY in TLJ, he never has anything bad to say about them in TROS) are pretty clearly intended to be seen as symptoms of Luke being traumatized and letting that pain and loss and fear consume him to the point that he's placing the blame on an easy target rather than actually acknowledging what happened and how he feels about it and the part he played in it. Luke in TLJ is hiding from his fears, hiding from his own reality, refusing to step up and do what needs to be done and face his own mistakes. So he turns to "the Jedi were weak and need to die" as a way of basically excusing the choices he's currently making. He's not RIGHT, the things he tells Rey aren't TRUE, and that's the whole point behind his arc in TLJ. His last words are to say that he won't be the last Jedi, and he's clearly not upset by that, he says it like it's a TRIUMPH, which indicates that he no longer believes the Jedi need to all die out. Even earlier, he's upset about losing the Jedi texts, indicating that even though he was arguing for the Jedi to die and about to burn them himself, he didn't ACTUALLY believe any of those things he said or want the things he said he wanted, he was just desperately trying to convince himself that he did because it was easier than doing the emotional work of facing what he'd done wrong.

I will say that I think this was a ridiculous and foolish arc for Luke to even HAVE, I think it's unfortunate that most of Luke's screentime in this trilogy is dedicated to him bashing the Jedi and blaming them for their own genocide, and I don't think that the storyline is handled very well in general. But the point of the story IS that Luke is wrong and the Jedi SHOULDN'T die out, so, you know, credit where credit is due here.

Getting into your question about the Jedi, though. I THINK you're asking me what the Jedi actually DO. Which, fair question, it's not something they discuss very much in the films or show (and the show is focused on them during war which makes it harder to figure out what they'd normally be doing during peacetime). I imagine there's a LOT of things the Jedi probably did before the war, it wasn't one job that they all did. But the general idea I got is that the Jedi work as a branch of the Republic Senate that can be called upon to provide aid like treaty mediation and conflict resolution for planets and systems that ask for it. I'll list off as many examples as I can think of where we see Jedi doing work that isn't related to the war in high canon.

In TPM, Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon are sent to try to NEGOTIATE with the Trade Federation about the blockade of Naboo, but they end up having to quickly adjust when the Trade Federation tries to kill them and sends in armed forced to INVADE Naboo.

Once that happens, their primary goal switches to getting Naboo's leader to Coruscant so she can make her case and plead for aid directly to the Senate because it just became a LOT bigger than two Jedi could actually do anything about.

In AOTC, it's mentioned that Obi-Wan and Anakin just got back from some kind of border dispute.

In TCW, Obi-Wan mentions that he spent a year on the run with Satine during the Mandalorian civil war, presumably called in by Satine's father to just... protect her until the war was over and Satine could take up peaceful leadership or something.

In TCW season 7, Trace and Rafa sort-of imply that the Jedi used to do a lot more work ON CORUSCANT to help poorer people on the lower levels.

Also in TCW, we hear that the Jedi once managed to basically overthrow the Zyggerian slave empire, something the Zyggerians still hold against them.

In TOTJ (if we choose to take that as canon), we see Dooku and Qui-Gon sent to help resolve a dispute where a senator's son has been kidnapped by his people (Dooku ends up siding with the kidnappers when he realizes why they did what they did and how corrupt the senator has become).

In AOTC again, we see Obi-Wan and Anakin act as bodyguards for Padme when an assassin comes after her.

We also routinely see the Jedi doing their own investigations that seem completely independent of the Senate, like Obi-Wan going off to find Kamino and Jango. When he makes his reports, he is clearly reporting directly to the Council, not the Senate or the Chancellor. During TCW, we see Plo Koon, Obi-Wan, and Anakin get involved in an investigation into the clones' creation and Sifo-Dyas's involvement in it and reported death, something that clearly isn't being run by the Chancellor or the Senate.

So what do the Jedi do? They keep the peace, whether that means acting as a temporary bodyguard for a planetary leader, taking down slave empires, or negotiating treaties and conflicts of varying kinds. Presumably, before Palpatine took power, the Jedi had enough time and independence that they were able to do a lot more work of their own that didn't necessarily directly involve the Senate, too, which could be anything from investigating corruption in the galaxy to providing aid and services to the poorer populations on planets in the Republic.

I don't think it's made clear whether the Jedi actively SEARCH for Force sensitive children or if they're just so established as a group that they're often MADE AWARE of Force sensitive children by parents calling for help somehow. That list they have of children is of presumably people whose parents have said maybe or not yet (rather than parents who have firmly said no) because I believe Mace refers to the holocron as the future of the Order. These are children who could potentially become Jedi or who are PLANNING to become Jedi but whose parents wanted to wait a year or something. This doesn't indicate to me that the Jedi actively sought them out, but that these were probably children whose parents sought out the Jedi themselves when it became clear their child was Force sensitive. We see something like this happen in TOTJ when Ahsoka disappears off with a massive wild cat and comes back RIDING said wild cat and the entire village is made abruptly aware that she's Force sensitive and meant to be a Jedi. If the Jedi come and confirm those suspicions, but the parents are uncertain or just explicitly ask for more time, the Jedi seem inclined to give it to them (up to a point, presumably, they obviously usually don't accept kids over a certain age so they can't wait forever).

The reason the Jedi have that rule about training children early is because the Jedi lifestyle requires certain sacrifices that can be difficult to adjust to if you weren't raised in it. For a lot of people, their friends and family are always going to be their first priority because they care about them more than any random stranger. And this is totally fine, this is natural and normal. The Jedi cannot do that, though. They can't prioritize the people they care about above their duty to the galaxy at large. This is the promise they make by choosing to be Jedi and it is generally incompatible with the promises you make to people like spouses and children (this is for a myriad of reasons like the amount of time a Jedi would have to spend doing work vs being with their family and the ways this would ultimately impact their relationships with people who are relying on them). The Jedi have to be willing to sacrifice the people they love for the greater good if it becomes necessary. And while the children who are raised among the Jedi can still ultimately decide this lifestyle isn't for them and walk away from it (and can do this at any age, even after they've made their oaths and become an adult), it's a lot EASIER to life this way if you ARE raised in it from a young age and don't already have a bunch of connections with other people to overcome.

This is why Anakin struggles so much. He was raised with his mother until he was nine and so he has this connection with her where the two of them were always going to be more important to each other than anybody else. That's just how that relationship worked and that's fine. But when he became a Jedi, Anakin had to stop thinking of his mother as more important than anybody else, and he CAN'T. He ultimately abandons his duty as a Jedi, his duty to protect Padme, in order to go protect Shmi because Shmi is more important to him than anyone else. Had Padme gotten assassinated as a result of him abandoning that duty, it could've had some repercussions for a lot of people, but Anakin DOES NOT CARE because Shmi is more important. And of course, we see him then make the exact same mistake with Padme herself after Shmi is dead. He prioritizes Padme above everyone else because he legitimately just CANNOT live any other way, he CANNOT not prioritize Padme more than everyone else, ESPECIALLY when she is his wife, and he ultimately is willing to sacrifice the Jedi, the clones, and the Republic to save her.

We even see him blatantly TELL Padme this in TCW where he says that ideals are important, but they'll never be more important to him than how he FEELS about Padme. He clearly tells Padme that he EXPECTS her to prioritize him as her husband more than once, something Padme usually TRIES to push back on but ultimately usually capitulates to. Even Padme ends up getting jealous and upset once when Anakin can't stay the night with her upon returning from the war because he has to go make a report to the Council. Padme and Anakin have clear expectations of each other as husband and wife that seem to be in contradiction to what their respective careers require of them that cause them distress in their relationship more than once.

Anakin struggles with this and my personal interpretation of Anakin is that he'd ALWAYS have struggled with this because he wants to be able to prioritize the people he loves, even before it gets to the point where he's willing to murder millions of people to do it. His desires are just incompatible with the way the Jedi choose to live, but if he'd been adopted by the Jedi before he was old enough to really make that kind of connection, he'd have had an easier time managing that because he just wouldn't necessarily have ever HAD those kinds of desires. He would've grown up learning about love and family in a very different way that would allow him to prioritize his duty to the galaxy because he WANTS to prioritize his duty to the galaxy and no one person would be more important than that. But in canon, Anakin WANTS to be able to prioritize the people he cares about, more than anything else this is what he wants. And he wants those same people to also prioritize HIM in return (it's one of the reasons his relationship with Obi-Wan is both one of his healthiest ones, because Obi-Wan refuses to do this and expects the same of Anakin, but also one of the ones most easily discarded and replaced because Anakin knows that Obi-Wan will never give him what he wants).

So yes, it's GOOD that the Jedi insist on training their children early because it helps them be better Jedi with fewer struggles, even as they always keep the door open for their members to make a different choice as they grow and change if this life isn't one they want to live still. It's why they let Ahsoka walk away after the Wrong Jedi arc even though they also brought her into the Order when she was young. Being raised a Jedi gave Ahsoka a really great foundation, but things changed as she got older and she ended up deciding she had to leave the Order, even if temporarily, to figure out some things for herself and manage her mental health. The Order was happy to support her no matter what she chose, whether she chose to leave or stay, and would've supported her if she'd chosen to return, too.

The Jedi take children whose parents give them up so they can have a better life, they take children who might not HAVE parents anymore, they take children whose parents don't WANT them, and they give them a wonderful supportive life that gives them incredible amounts of education and resources so they can live their life in service to the galaxy and the Force, using their abilities to help others. They provide the children they take in with everything they could need or want to be able to live a happy, healthy life, whether that life ends up being as a Jedi in service to the Republic and the Force or not.

There's also what's been called like a "call to destiny" that the Jedi have, where becoming a Jedi is, in some ways, a destiny for them to fulfill. But much like Anakin's prophecy, it is choice they have to make, not something entirely predestined and chosen for them. The path is THERE, and it calls to them, but they can absolutely ignore that call or misunderstand it or have circumstances keep them from it. But it means that nearly everyone who becomes a Jedi makes that choice because they hear and feel that call to this destiny and have chosen to ANSWER IT. Helping people, serving the galaxy, this is what they were meant to do, and they know it and find joy and satisfaction in that knowledge.

So when the war starts, they obviously know something has gone wrong, they've known it was going wrong for YEARS, at the very least since Maul popped up as the first confirmed Sith in 1000 years, but they are 10,000 people (and whether this number referred to only those Jedi that were in the field and the actual total was much higher or whether this was in fact the ENTIRE TOTAL of Jedi is unconfirmed, but either way they're a small group so the point remains) in a galaxy of TRILLIONS. People have done the math on what this would mean adjusted to the population of the Earth and it's like expecting a church group of 70 people to somehow solve the whole planet's problems. There's only so much they can do. So while they're very cognizant of the growing issues in the Republic even before the war starts, they can only put out so many tire fires at once. Once the war DOES start, they're immediately required to try to put out this one raging wildfire and all the other regular tire fires have to go by the wayside until the wildfire is dealt with. So what are they doing? They're putting out the damn wildfire as quickly as they can with as little loss of life as they can and just hoping the rest of the galaxy can keep itself together long enough for them to DO THAT.

I don't even necessarily agree that they should've been "more involved in politics" because, quite honestly, they seem more aware of how bad things are getting politically than ANYONE ELSE IN THIS STORY (aside from the dude making the situation worse to begin with). It's the JEDI who are actively arguing with the Chancellor about not sending them to war and saying they're not supposed to be an army, it's the JEDI tracking down Kamino and Geonosis and figuring out some of what's actually happening there, it's the JEDI who continue to investigate that even while the war is going on and actually figure out that the clones are a Sith trap, it's the JEDI who ultimately figure out Palpatine is too corrupt to stay in office and then actually DO something about it before anybody does. They might not be active politicians, sure, I'll grant you that, but they're very very clearly aware of what's happening politically and are responding to it more than anyone else we ever see. I'm not sure what more they could've done besides, like, BE politicians which clearly just isn't the role they want to play in the galaxy anyway and wouldn't be good for the kind of work they want to do.

A lot of people like to say things like that, that the Jedi should've been more political and whatnot, but what would that actually have accomplished? What could they have done if they were "more political" than they were already doing? At BEST, the Jedi might be able to get a representative into the Senate and provide one more person capable of speaking out against the Chancellor and the corruption in the Republic, but Padme at a delegation of 2000 Senators with her that were apparently willing to at least recognize Palpatine's corruption and that STILL wasn't enough to stem the tide. One more politician wasn't going to make that big of a difference. So could they have been more political? Yeah, sure, they could've more literally been politicians I guess, but how does that help them more than what they were ACTUALLY doing? Would this somehow have prevented Palpatine from enacting Order 66 or starting the war at all? Or would it have led to the same conclusion no matter what they did because the Jedi's genocide wasn't about the choices the JEDI were making at all?

Luke Skywalker in 'The Last Jedi' (2/2)

OK, so in Part 1/2 of this post, we explored why Luke's TLJ characterization isn't really inconsistent with what had previously been established in Star Wars lore. It tracks. Dare I say: it works.

And yet... something still feels off, right?

Well, the reason for this is because Luke's character development is impacted by the film's structure, which in turn is impacted by - of all things - Poe's lack of development in Episode VII! Just hear me out!

The intention: Making the audience feel the same emotions as the protagonist, deuteragonists and antagonist.

This is what most movies strive for. Unless the film is trying to go for some dramatic irony, you want your audience to be on the same page with your protagonist, emotionally-speaking.

And y'know what? Rian Johnson does this very well.

Overall, he displays a very good grasp of making us, the audience, feel the same emotions as a film’s protagonist (generally, the main character, whose POV we follow) or deuteragonist (the ‘secondary main character’).

Rey was expecting to meet the Luke from the Original Trilogy, the Luke from Legends... and instead was disappointed to meet an old jaded hermit. Just like many of the fans were.

Finn is fooled by DJ, mistaking him for an archetypal "misfit with a heart of gold". Just like the fans were.

Poe is increasingly frustrated with Holdo, just like we were.

Call it "meta", call it "subversive", the bottom line is that some of the narrative choices that a lot of fans criticize the film for are intentionally placed there to put you in the same mental state as the characters you're following, even during the film's twists.

But as a result, if a character isn’t the protagonist (Rey), or the deuteragonists (Poe or Finn), or even the antagonist (Kylo)... they'll barely get any development.

They might get one or two scenes for themselves tops, but overall secondary characters like Luke, or Holdo, or DJ will mostly be shown through the filter of Rey or Poe’s or Finn's POV.

The Problem: Luke isn't a protagonist or deuteragonist, so he isn't developed to the audience's satisfaction.

Don't get me wrong: Luke has the second-most screen time in the whole film, but that's because Rey is the one with the most screen time, and he's primarily a character in her storyline.

To be fair, he does have his own subplot, he's the spiritual center of the whole film. But concretely, he’s one step above support characters like Holdo, Leia, Rose and DJ. We're barely shown his own POV and mainly view him through Rey's lens.

Like, there's a reason why in this scene...

... we don't see what Luke witnessed in Ben’s mind, simply his reaction to it: Rey didn’t see it either.

All three "Rashomon" flashbacks are what Rey is picturing in her mind when she’s being told three different versions of the story. She doesn't see what Luke witnessed, so we don't see it either.

And you know what? On paper... this is also not really an issue. It's actually quite standard. I mean, Yoda doesn't get much backstory or an arc in Empire Strikes Back. He's just the mentor figure, and we see him through Luke's POV.

There's no arguing that Luke in TLJ receives much more development than Yoda does in ESB.

But y’know what?

Yoda was also never the protagonist of a whole other trilogy.

So if you're gonna tell an audience that "the protagonist of the previous trilogy strayed from the path and is now a completely different person" - even if they eventually make their way back with a character arc - I don’t think it’s out of order for audience members to expect more development than a regular mentor archetype.

Context is expected, and when it isn't delivered, that'll kill the suspension of disbelief, for many fans. They're not just disappointed in Luke like Rey is, they're not immersed in the movie anymore.

So how do you go for what Rian was going while also trying to keep about half the fans from jumping ship?

The Solution (?) Delving deeper into Luke.

So let’s suppose Luke was treated like a deuteragonist. Suppose we see his own POV more, rather than just seeing him through Rey’s eyes. Would that help? And what would that look like?

Firstly, we keep that deleted scene of him mourning Han’s loss.

Or we show it like in the comic adaptation of TLJ, with Luke getting angry at his decision to cut himself off from the Force, unintentionally levitating objects until Chewie consoles him.

WHAT IT DOES: Either version humanizes Luke, shows who he is beneath the jaded mask he's putting on, gives audience a chance to mourn Han with him.

We keep that deleted scene of him explaining to Rey why he thinks the Jedi were flawed, also known as the “3rd lesson scene”.

WHAT IT DOES: Spells out Luke's rationalization that the Jedi Order needs to end. Marks the beginning of Luke's wake up call.

We add one or two additional short flashbacks of Ben gradually becoming darker and unhinged. Maybe he harms one of his fellow students in a fit of rage.

WHAT IT DOES: Clarifies that Ben was going through a dark period and that's why Luke went to confront him in his hut. He didn't just saunter into Ben's hut, sabers blazing.

Maybe halfway through the film, we see Luke pack his bag as he prepares to rescue his friends with Rey, only to find her communicating with Kyloe.

After all, the novelization shows that, upon opening himself to the Force and sensing Leia, he immediately decides to get back in the game. So if that’s not just something Jason Fry added to embellish stuff, let’s see that.

WHAT IT DOES: Drives home the fact that Luke realizes his mistake. (Although, it might also take away from the subsequent scene with Yoda).

Finally, let’s actually see what Luke saw in Ben’s mind: him killing Lor San Tekka, killing Han, killing Leia, murdering Chewie and countless more innocents all with a smile on his face.

WHAT IT DOES: Provides context for Luke's extreme reaction.

Most of these things are already technically canon, the only difference is that it would be shown on screen. And if all these elements are added, then Luke’s reasons for staying away and his reaction in Ben’s hut are already more understandable.

So where’s the flaws in this solution?

Solution Flaw #1: Plot twist would be ruined.

Talking about this one:

Again, we're seeing Luke THROUGH Rey's POV, for the most part. Our reaction is - intentionally - the same reaction as Rey.

The whole point of the twist is that

we, with Rey, believe Kylo can be redeemed, because

we, like Rey, remember Luke redeemed Vader.

So when she realizes “oh shit, Luke was right, he’s too far gone”... we react that way too.

But if we had seen Ben’s turn as well, if we had seen how he was during his training, if we had seen what Luke’s saw in Ben’s mind, we would all collectively agree with Luke and think that Rey is making a mistake in trying to redeem Kylo.

So when Rey walks away from Luke, rather than hoping she succeeds, we’d just be waiting for her to inevitably fail. We'd be thinking:

"Rey, you moron, you're walking into a trap and Kylo isn't gonna turn!"

Emotionally-speaking, we would be detached from the protagonist.

Solution Flaw #2: Increase in the runtime at the cost of other scenes.

The Last Jedi is already the longest film in the franchise. Adding just three of the above-suggestions would increase that runtime, which wouldn’t work. So you’d need to take something out.

But Finn and Poe’s storylines are already stripped down to their bare bones as it is. Hell, so was the Rey/Luke storyline, for that matter.

Actually, wait... why do we have three storylines, in the first place?

After all, if we look at The Empire Strikes Back, they only have two storylines, right?

The protagonist, Luke, goes to Dagobah.

The deuteragonists, Han and Leia, evade the Empire.

Main plot & subplot. Great.

Wouldn't it be better to just have Poe and Finn do the Canto Bight storyline together? That would give us sme remaining time to focus on Luke’s past, right? Where’s the issue?

Well, Rian Johnson put it this way:

Bottom line, in The Force Awakens, Poe is a clear-cut character. Simple as that. He’s charismatic and fun, but there isn’t much room for him to grow.

A lot of people compare his character to Han, but there's an issue with that comparison (besides the obvious fact that Finn is Han and Poe is Leia)...

In ANH, Han has an arc. He's the philosophical antagonist of the film, he's only out for himself which conflicts with Luke's attempts to help others. Han goes from being a selfish irresponsible gun-slinger to taking responsibility and becoming a selfless rebel, a part of something bigger. Arc concluded.

(Hell, this very reason is why Harrison Ford didn’t wanna keep playing him and lobbied to kill him off.)

So in ESB, Leia is the one who has the arc. Han is just being himself. Leia is the one who must slowly come to terms with the fact that she does love him, despite him being a total nerf-herder. So she and Han bicker, there’s conflict there, but there’s also an underlying affection.

As such, when Poe doesn’t have an arc in TFA, and is already on great terms with Finn, then there’s no conflict if you put them together in a subplot.

And conflict is crucial, in storytelling. If it's absent, then the story becomes boring.

As a result, Rian Johnson had to create conflict and growth for Poe.

Which means that, now, a third storyline is thrown in the mix... and the pacing and development of the other two are affected by this. Some really good scenes need to be cut, some stuff needs to get shuffled around.

For example, remember this deleted scene, from further up?

In the commentary, Rian explained that the reason it wasn’t in the film is because it didn’t intercut well with the other two storylines. *Three and a half, if you wanna count Kylo's personal scenes.

As such, there’s no space to add more scenes to develop Luke's perspective.

And if Rian made more space, well, that wouldn't work either. Because while Luke is the spiritual core of the film... this isn't his movie. He's not the protagonist anymore. But he used to be, and if you show him too much (not as Rey's mentor figure, that is, but as a protagonist or deuteragonist), he'll take the spotlight off the new cast with the snap of a finger.

When Michael Arndt was working on the Sequels with George Lucas in 2012, he encountered this same issue:

“Early on I tried to write versions of the story where [Rey] is at home, her home is destroyed, and then she goes on the road and meets Luke. And then she goes and kicks the bad guy’s ass. It just never worked and I struggled with this. This was back in 2012. It just felt like every time Luke came in and entered the movie, he just took it over. Suddenly you didn’t care about your main character anymore because, ‘Oh f*ck, Luke Skywalker's here. I want to see what he’s going to do’.” - Michael Arndt, Entertainment Weekly, 2015

And I'm guessing this is a problem that JJ had to deal with too, hence why Luke was pushed to the end of Episode VII: so as to give the new characters a chance to be developed a bit more, first.

There's finally the fact that, while most of those ideas can make Luke's fall more understandable... his story isn't about "how he fell".

It's about how he got back up. The whole point of the film is that even when you've reached your lowest point you can still inspire and be inspired by hope.

So while adding any of the above scenes would only reinforce what was already shown in the movie, be it explicit or subtextual... they wouldn't ADD anything to the theme of learning from failure and getting back in the saddle.

Do I care about Luke’s characterization in TLJ...?

In spite of what the length and intricacy of these two posts might indicate... I don’t, really 😅

Like, sure, I wish more had been done with the character, but Luke was never really my childhood hero, Obi-Wan was.

So Luke in TLJ isn’t a gaping wound in my chest. I didn't whine about it in 2017, nor did I shed tears of joy and said “he’s finally back” when we saw him in The Mandalorian, for example.

Like, it was an awesome scene, but in my mind Luke never left.

Also I’m the type of Star Wars fan who’ll tolerate any addition to the canon by virtue of it being new Star Wars content.

So even if that addition is something I didn’t enjoy during the viewing, I still focus on the positive and roll with it, I come up with a headcanon that'll make it work.

Because you get to do that, with a transmedia franchise!

If you don’t like how it went down in the movie? There's always a comic around the corner that'll retcon it and/or retroactively make it better... that's how it was for the Prequels.

But for the Sequels, it's difficult. There's a scarcity of transmedia content, when it comes to stuff set around the Sequels era.

(The Mandalorian and Book of Boba Fett are too soon after ROTJ to have any meaningful impact on Luke's journey in the Sequels. Some people see Luke's behavior in those shows as "the beginning of his failure", but I covered why I don't think this is really the case, here.)

Instead of just three items, how about a comic mini-series focusing on the year Luke spent training Leia, or on his adventures across the galaxy as he tries to rebuild the Jedi Order? Maybe he meets Cal Kestis, or Quinlan Vos? Maybe he needs to face against an Oppo Rancisis who was consumed by the darkness, post-Order 66?

Or better yet, how about a video game centered on Luke, in the style of Fallen Order or Jedi Academy?

Get Mark Hamill to motion cap it, he's done it before.

This would also allow the fans who grew up with the powerhouse that is Legends Grandmaster Luke Skywaker to have some fun!

Many fans wanted to see Luke in action, in TLJ, and instead got a pretend-samurai fight. Which is nice, powerful and symbolic, he goes out like a true Jedi, it makes the Force more than a superpower... but it's not a lightsaber duel. In a game, though? Players can go to town.

I dunno... any additional content would've smoothed the blow for many people who didn't like what was done with Luke in TLJ. Sure, you'd always have people who just hated the whole thing, but if transmedia content helped reduce the hate for the Prequels, it could've done the same with Luke.

I'm not sure why that route wasn't taken.

Yandere Maul Thoughts

I can't see Maul falling for someone completely deaf to the Force, so this is yan!Maul x force sensitive reader, not so much an actual story as it is concepts for how the relationship would be

Man has the most unhealthy desire to nurture people he cares about. Unhealthy to them, at least. Between Savage, Ahsoka, and Ezra, Maul clearly wants a companion he can have power over. And given the number of force users stronger than him, any power imbalance WILL be in his favor.

During the years between Clone Wars and Rebels (or later, going off of George Lucus' sequel idea of having Maul as a godfather crime boss post-Empire) Maul would be on the lookout for a new apprentice. Maybe you are a survivor of order 66, maybe your parents turned down the jedi taking you as an infant, or maybe your force sensitivity was just a bit too low to gain their attention. Whatever the case, you've evaded the Empire, but you didn't realize you also needed to avoid Maul.

Like with Ezra, Maul would be subtle when he first finds you, gauging your natural ability and getting you to open up and trust in him as a mentor or authority figure who has your best interest in mind. And in his mind, he really does. He will expose you to the dark side through fear and anger and suffering, and he will think he is helping you, strengthening you. Training will be brutal and exhausting. He anticipated you would resent him for it at first, yet he finds himself upset by that. To his surprise, he finds he doesn't want to only cause you pain, as he realized your company feels... pleasant. Initially this results in you gaining a slight reprieve as he distances himself, thinking you are distracting him from the negative emotions that fuel his dark side powers. Soon enough, however, he finds that his passion for you can still lead to rage and fear. At that revelation, he finally admits to himself that he desires you, not just as an underling or apprentice, but as a companion and lover. It seems that, as long as he gives in to his passions, even those resulting from love, his power in the dark side remains strong.

If he can't get you to reciprocate his love, he would settle for making you hate him. After all, he has firsthand experience of how all-consuming hatred of someone can be. It would not be his preferred relationship with you, but as long as he knows he fills your mind one way or another, he will be satisfied. Maul would justify any sadness or anger his affections cause in you by telling himself it strengthens your connection to the dark side, giving you more power and making you more able to protect yourself from anyone who may wish to do you harm. Well, anyone besides Maul, of course. In addition to the training he forces you to go through, he would be quite strict in keeping you from leaving him. If fear and punishments don't keep you in line, well... Maul knows some limbs aren't necessary for survival. Besides, matching legs seem more his style than the typical couples' matching outfits, especially when he can install a kill switch that shuts down your legs if you try to leave him again.

Rex catch Cody and Obi-Wan in flagrante delicto and has a lot of feelings about it. Not positive ones. He feels it threaten his brother's life and... well, he's not wrong is he?

But love, between brothers, between a commander and his general can sometimes stronger than risks or reasons.

Painfull but amazing.

It happens during the war and ends during it too, so you don't know what will ultimately happens in this world. Do they make it? You don't know. I didn't put it in canon divergence because, aside from the fact it's codywan, nothing contradict it being canon compliant.

Canon -or not- is not the point, though. The point is the love story of Cody and Obi-Wan, as seen through Rex's eyes.

But love, between brothers, between a commander and his general can sometimes stronger than risks or reasons.

Painfull but amazing.

an injury to one

deniigiq is one fo those authors whose codywan's I just can't get enough of. That weird assholes hyperarticulate characterisation is just... XD I don't know. I love it!

The troopers make a discovery of the fiscal variety, which causes them to realize that they may have more in common with the jedi than they previously thought.

The Jedi Order is a charitable religious order. Ergo, they aren't getting paid. They get 'some' stipends but with the war, they are quickly reaching the point of untenability. Don't worry, they've got a plan.

It's told mostly from from Fox's POV which I love because 1. I love codywan as told from an outside POV 2. I love Fox.

I just love him. He has so much happening to him. He is so nihilistic, deadpan and done. Yet, he never let it twist him or give up because he love his brothers and won't let them flounders. Also, he may or may not have acquired a crush on that impossible kriffar jedi.

Warning for exploitation, money, off-screen non graphic child death and clone troopers deshumanization. Jedi Order and jedi lineage fuckery. Clone commanders fuckery. Grogu briefly shows up. Fox's buir instincts are now activated. Previously, he was of the opinion jedi could sink or swim on their own not anymore. He got this.

Canon divergence

The Art of Happenstance *

Cody and Obi-Wan co-parent a lightsaber. Force Bond. I think it saves Cody from Order 66? It ends on a cliffhanger but it's hopefull.

Funny and fantastic.

Hope

The Clone Wars are the backdrop to a quiet and fragile love between a general and a clone commander.

Listen. Listen. I cannot even begin to tell you how beautifull and delicate their love feels in this fic. It's like picking up a piece of art made out of gossamerish light.

It's poetic. It's splendid. It's quiet, discreet and personnal, like the feelings of these private men. It ties up kind of quickly to give a happy ending despite Order 66 still being carried out, but it's everything that get you there that matters.

Stunning.

The Loneliest Human Boy in the Jedi Temple

Rather than let Boba go to jail, Obi-Wan adopts him.

It's told from Boba POV, which is very interesting. I love TCW period stories featuring Boba!

And it deals with Boba confronting his father's death, being adopted by a jedi to avoid jail despite the fact his father hated jedi, dealing with what's he's done to get revenge on Mace, learning to see maybe the clones as more than things, and starting to accept that if clones are not things, then his father was wrong. What he did was wrong.

Boba has to recon with a thousand things, decide what's moral or what's not and has no one he trusts to guide him without feeling like he's betraying the only parent he has ever loved. At eleven.

Boba's disregard of clones is wrong. But when you look at all he has going on and what handicap he started out with, you cannot help but feel for him.

I feel like Boba is Dudley, the Dursley are Jango, the clones are Harry and I'm Dumbledore in the Dursley's living room at the start of book 6, shaking my head. In the end, you can only pity Boba a bit and love him and be sadden by the damages Jango did to Boba out of selfish, blind love.

No Order 66

These Things Happen

Obi-wan Kenobi keeps promoting Cody because giving him courting gifts as his superior officer would be Wrong. The promotions gets out of hand, and it somehow save the universe.

When Duty is Done - serie

Post-War: settling the matter of Clones Rights, Jedi Order Reforms, Force Philosophy, inter-jedi conflicts that were put off during the war, PTSD, healing, preparing a new planet to become the clones' home, clones culture exploration which is rooted in, but not, mandalorian's culture and, of course, getting together and settling in a relationship for Cody and Obi-Wan.

Loved it!!!! Cody is MVP. Maul is there, with Yaddle, and I'm here for it. Bant, where have you been? Chirrut is my Force Follower idol. Feemor is there as more than a footnote on Qui-Gon's history and it's amazing.

Basically, all the explorations of lives for the clones and jedi and Force Users you could possibly want in a No-Order 66 post-war setting.

I have so much love for this fic.

The war comes to an abrupt end, and everyone around Cody begins the long road to recovery and discovery. Cody, on the other hand, just needs to find a new job. Unfortunately, he has no idea which one to pick.

First, No-Order 66 post-war Codywan is my absolute favorite type of codywan.

Second, everything. But more seriously, Codywan is often written in a such a way that Cody's life revolve around Obi-Wan's life. He settle in the Temple to live with Obi-Wan, he helps Obi-Wan deal with Anakin's meltdown/death/leaving the Order, he takes one of the job the jedi have made for the vode so he can work with Obi-Wan...

Do you see where I am going with this?

It's all about Obi-Wan. And while it can be fun to read if it's not pushed to its absolute, this type of unequal relationship, where one dedicate their entire life to the other, makes my skin crawl. Funnily enough, it's also 80% of the time the POC in that role when it's about an interracial couple. And I just - can't.

Here, Cody is his own person.

He had a life before Obi-Wan, he has one now beside Obi-Wan, and he will have one still, after, independantly from the love of his life. You can love someone as much as the galaxy is wide and still have love for your own separate life, your own friends, your own interests, goals, journey...

Basically, after the war, Cody says fuck it to any kind of military job and set out to 'find himself'. He doesn't know what it will look like and all his brothers mock him gently, and a bit worriedly, as they leave him in the dust by settling into their own civilian lives, since they don't have the same kind of hang-up he does.

But, by the Force, he is going to figures out who he is and what he wants, aside from the jedi, aside from the GAR, aside from even his own brothers, if it kills him. The 'situation' with General Kenobi will just have to wait until then.

Imagine that. Wanting to be sure of who you are, what you want and the kind of life you want before entering a relationship. Wanting to be certain of yourself, first. Especialy in a relationship where you didn't have the same power status before.

An excellent look at Cody, at the commanders, at the clones, at a post-war life in the Republic. Bly, Alpha-17 and Wolffe just shot me through the heart. It is now my headcanon that Bly is short for Butterfly for... reasons.

It was touch and go for a moment but happy endings guys! Thrill and anxiety abounds beforehand. Temple shenanigans. Force's engineering. The chips get activated earlier than canon but they make it through!

Worth a Thousand Words

Lol! Post-War, the clones didn't get much instructions in how to approach someone romantically. Someone suggest Cody try to send a dick pic to Obi-Wan. Somehow, it works, but not the way you expect.

This is so great! I was howling with laughers and cringing in sympathic embarrassement. Poor Cody!

This, too, was a gift

After the Rako Hardeen mission, Obi-Wan suffers a complete nervous breakdown, kills all the Sith in a way he feels violate everything he is and stands for, then fall into a severe depressive fugue.

Meanwhile, the Republic tries to reconstruct. The clones take what is owe to them and try to settle on a new planet, figure out who they are outside the War, serving the Republic and the jedi, while looking for their missing savior.

Obi-Wan is really, really depressed here and dissociated from reality for a while so, beware. Yaddle is MVP. A great look into the clones culture. The Sith problem get resolved pretty quickly. The story is about what come after and how you deal with having done what you had to do in a time of war.

Cody and Obi-Wan gets married for a mission. Somehow, it saves the universe.

When We Were Young

After the war, Cody dedicated himself to his brothers: their rights, their protection, their well-beings, their lives...

He knows Obi-Wan has dedicated himself to the Order, but he hasn't seen him long enough to talk about it.

Thought now they are going on a joint mission once more, maybe that's about to change...

Anakin doesn't fall, but he and Padme don't keep custody of Luke and Leia. Anakin tries to grapple with the consensual loss of his children while trying to stay in their lives. Meanwhile, someone murders a senator.

Amazing! Fantastic. The feelings... The reflection on choices and morality and parenthood and the choices one made about their lives and the ones they are going to make in the future to live a life they want to live.

Leia has Anakin's bad temper and the Organa love her but are a bit overwhelmed. Luke is his sweet self, being raised by weirdoes assholes Cody & Obi-Wan in space Scottland Stewjon. Yes, Obi-Wan left the Order to raise Luke in peace. He gets Cody as a bonus, since the man is now Luke's dad and Obi-Wan is lucky he's sharing.

A Different Perspective

Obi-Wan, Cody, the war, and a bunch of men and boys who have never gotten to choose things for themselves before, as seen through Dex's eyes.

Finders Keepers *

Your soulmate finds everything you lose.

Obi-Wan has never had a soulmate of his own to lose things to before. Now, he's picking up things and wonders who they belong to.

Cody’s never been sure if the things he finds belong to his soulmate. If he even has one.

Anakin is contantly losing things but it somehow save the Universe because Padme take good care of them.

Fox and Bly and Bail and Breha and Bant and Kit and Boil and Waxer... all the others are there too.

Post War. Obi-Wan has epilepsy and it's tied to his prescience. Cody want Kix to investigate. Because they are weirdos assholes and he doesn't want to ask Obi-Wan outright. But also because he respects his privacy too much to make him talk about it. You know, they are only boyfriends. Don't won't to push boundaries too much, there. He's not a savage. Lol. Cody, you weirdo....

It was so good. So goooood... There was already the interesting part where clones don't ride into the sunset with jedi. They, too, chafe against their perception of jedi-superiority, so a lot of them choose something different than "move in the Temple and dedicate their lives to their jedi generals and jedi work". Which I love.

But, you know, I think this, it's a more realistic take and a more equal footing, long-term, than the unbalanced "clones devoted to jedi". Also, variety is always a special treat for the reader. At least it is for me. You could gave me a thousand of different headcanons, if it's well done, I'm on board!

And this one... The clones, the brotherhood/friendship amongst clones, Cody's backstory, the jedi, the post-war, the medical investigation, the Force/Jedi Order worldbuilding,.... What can I say? Save for a few fics with some of my NOTP/squicks, everything deniigiq has ever written just delight me and blow me away.

The code of a clone is a simple thing: you were made to die for the Republic, for the Jedi. Make the most of the time you have before that.

Clone culture: seeded by mandalorian culture, but not the same. Introspection and identities issues: Cody ponders a lot about what it means to be a clone and who he is. Cody is super smart and cares a lot for his brothers. It has shaped my understanding of Cody.

Obi-Wan and Cody fell in love because they have actually a lot in common. Obi-Wan's lightsaber is playing matchmaker. This somehow save the universe.

Wrong Side of the Night

Is there a limit to how many fics by glimmerglanger I can rec?

*check magic eight ball* "My sources say no."

Cody has a very bad day, both he and Obi-Wan choose a less than ideal ways to handle the situation, and they have a long conversation about it the next morning.

Ouch. Like, ouch. Yet. Beware: Unjust treatement of the clones (not by Obi-Wan). Unhealthy emotional response. Impulsively angry sex. Dub-con. As-in, Cody's actions are driven by anger that has overtaken his reason and Obi-Wan's are driven by maladaptative reponse to a lifetime of traumatic environnement.

But, it's codywan, guys. So, once everyone has cooled-off: communication! Care and self-care! Trust! Support!

This fic was particularly impactful for me for personal reasons but I think it's powerfull, full-stop. You can love each other very much and still not act well towards each other. Beware of purity/cancel culture. People are failible and, at some point, they are going to fuck up.

But One: they are both harmed by the action they both perpetrated. No villain and blameless victim here. Two: once they have messed up, they both recognise their own part it it, apologise and commit to corrective actions.

This is what a good relationship look like, even with the slip up. This is what you can trust because of the slip up. They don't have to be perfect with the other all the time, because they know they can get through it and improve. The codywan is strong in this one.

I'm Not Safe Outside Your Arms

This is probably the most anguished fic you can find about a No-Order 66. But it has a happy ending!

Basically, and without spoiling it too much, the jedi do kill Palpatine but Darth Sidious continues to inflict pain, sorrow and suffering on the galaxy from beyond the grave.

Obi-Wan, of course, shoulders the whole of it but so do the vode. You're really horrified for Obi-Wan, but you feel for the 212th attack battalion: brave, strong and loyal to the end.

They should be free, they should be safe, for the first time of their lives. Their brothers are! But they aren't. And they choose it, because some choice, no matter how grim and terrifying, are no choice at all.

But there's light at the end of the tunnel. Everyone love everyone and no one is giving up. Get ready.

There Was Only One Bed

They have to share a sleeping bag for cold weather reasons. Then, they just keep sharing. Yeah, Cody, we're onto you. Go through Order 66 with open-ended fix-it.

Cody and Obi-Wan are on an undercover mission, and for some reason, they have to pretend to be married. It appears that the pining will increase exponentially for the next week.

Not really a mission fic, since it's all about the trope. But it's there to put a "background" to all the small spaces sharing and there's even a tiny bit of action. It was funny and good and I enjoyed it a lot.

Warning for those who, like me, don't think the Code preclude relationships. Obi-Wan presents it like it does in the fic, but that he chose Cody anyway. I disagree. The problem is not relationship but the kind of relationship and how it impact the choices you make, your work, your committement. My headcanon for jedi/civilian relationship and their consequences/risks/problems is 70% like it is in Remedial Jedi Theology, which I recommend to everyone.

It's alright, it doesn't take off from it. It's mean to be this side of crackish, fun read, which it is, so I don't feel the need to split hair about interpretation of the Code. I just want to mention it for those who feel strongly about it. If it bothers you, you can stop at the end of chapter two. It's still great and can be read as finished at this point.

Obi-Wan fakes his death and Cody works through every stage of grief. He eventually decides that he's going to fuck his way out of the depression pit and finds himself falling in love with this handsome Mandalorian who he just keeps meeting.

Obi-Wan dies and Cody is out of all the fuck to give. First, he spirals. Then, he says screw the universe. He treat himself. He looks for sex. He undermines all the unworthy incompetent natborns officers. He take on Boba's gardienship, who is not in space jail at 11 but was up to this point under Mace's supervision. Ponds is very relieved.

He will crawl out of this depressive hole or die trying.

Smuggled In

NO ORDER 66. But, also Mission Fic. And I think it's more about the Mission than the fact it happens in a No Order 66's world, thought I love it and I'm gratefull for it.

Cody and some of the 212th get captured by smugglers, and nothing is quite what it seems to be.

Hahaha! I love this one! Cody is always blaming the shit that happens to the 212th on Obi-Wan and now the joke is on him because it went completely off the rails pretty early and the jedi is nowhere near where the action is happening. Or, is he?

I cannot even begin to tell you how much this fic touch me. Obi-Wan is an omega, though it's not a traditional depiction of A/B/O.

It keeps screwing him over thorough his life and the sex he ends up having despite himself is not funny. Read the tags. Obi-Wan is ignorant of how much people want him, but considering it's not because he's this bastion of Mary-Sue perfection, but because the alphas around him are knot-heads who excuse their poor behaviors and selfishness with their hormones, it doesn't read that way.

Cody is amazing. Obi-Wan is the Force's chew toy and beloved son at the same time. Loved it.

The one where new father Cody reckons with many of the anxieties and traumas of his past and gets some much delayed comfort.

Or how glimmerglanger managed to make me cry in less than 4 000 words.

It's not so much a mpreg fic, but a new parents fic. A late-night breastfeeding session reveals a lot of buried and current feelings, thoughts and issues. There's much pain, but it's all surrounded by intimacy, love and warmth. It's like hiding under the blanket with your SO and shading cathartic tears. Amazing.

Post-Order 66

I hate Order 66. I don't want to read fics about it. Some authors are just too good, though.

Haunt Me, Then

Fix-It, as much as possible. CC-2224 becomes Cody again and will die trying to make up killing his General and jedi, even if it kills him.

Heartwrenching.

We Build Our Empire From Ruins And Smoke

The Republic is dead and the Empire's throne is empty, and Fox will be damned if he lets anyone claim it.

Basically, post-order 66, the clones come back online and since everything they worked, die for and cared about is dead or gone, the gloves are off.

Come with prequels and sequels, it's actually a whole serie. No dialogue. Anakin is dead. Palpatine dies. Clones-centric.

Not something I agree with irl, because it's when democracy is threaten you should work twice as hard to secure it. But since it's fiction and the general canon sense we get of politicians and regular population confronted with Order 66 is that they either don't care or agree, it's pretty fine with me.

First Sight

For Cody, it's love at first sight. From Kamino to Tatooine, it lives inside him.

A Treatise on Breaking and Repairs

Warning: whumpfest. Great satisfaction at the end, though.

Three years post-Order 66, Obi-Wan get captured by Vader. Rape and torture ensue. The 212th, under the chips' control, are there for it all. In the end, Anakin gets his just dessert. Our boys make free.

I'm a whore for dreamsharing fic. I cannot even begin to tell you how much I love it. This fic... this fic is cleansing and healing and touching and beautifull. I loved it!

A Whim, A Desire

OK, this one doesn't hurt. Much.

Three years after Order 66, Vader finds an artifact that allows him to create his perfect dream world within the Force. However, he finds that maintaining this world is impossible without someone living inside it at all times. He throws in everyone he can from his past life, including CC-2224.

Obi-Wan fell asleep on Tatooine and wake up in his dreams in the perfect life.

But illusion is not reality and when the seems of the dream start to show, Cody and Obi-Wan will fight to make their dream a reality.

Both Cody and Obi-Wan think the other is an illusion, and so they are free and honest with each other. What they built is lovely. Vader show up like the Lord of the House but it allows Obi-Wan to play out his fantasies of still being able to talk to Anakin and being part of his life.

It doesn't ends in Yay! We saved the Universe and kills Sidious/Vader. Just - Cody, saving himself and those he can along the way.

Fantasic imaginings. Make you wish it could have happen, if Anakin hadn't ruined everything by becoming Vader. Vader's frustrations of people and things eluding his 'absolute sithly control' is hilarious, sad and the source of endless failures on his part. Thankfully.

diogenes (what makes a man?)

Cody-centric. From Kamino to Tatooine. Lot of clones. Lot of feels and introspection. Most Dies But Some Lives.

Listen, I'm of the die hard opinion that if Cody's chip fail during the Empire, no matter when or how, he would not rest until he has saved all the brothers he can save. This is the same characterisation here.

I love stories being told from an excellently done OC. Here, we've got two troopers who want to desert and two clones who shake the chips' control after years of being under and deign for the natborns to join them on their way out. Now, all they need to do is find a way to get in touch with the Rebellion.

Cody is Force Sensitive. Obi-Wan teach him how to fight with a lightsaber. It doesn't save the universe, but at least it saves Cody. It's great! I promise Cody is still Cody and not changed into a zen jedi. He can just... feels the Force.

Purge Trooper CC-2224 is an extremely efficient jedi killer. He will find them all. All of them. Even the one from his dreams.

Pffffiuuuu. Don't look into this one for Cody's softening influence on CC-2224 or breaking out of the chip's influence by the sheer force of Will and Morality. This is straight-up Purge Trooper. Happy ending, though. Sort of. As much as can be in Post-Order 66.

CC-2224 malfunctions. The Empire tries to wipe him into working order. Cody is not letting them.

The Raephen's Gifts

It's happy! Cody and Obi-Wan obviously make it through Order 66 and the Empire, along with some clones and jedi, and the Republic and the Jedi Order are restored to the galaxy.

But it's all alluded to only very briefly in the background. Basicaly, now that the galaxy is at peace once more, old married couple codywan get on a week long retreat on a peacefull planet in Wild Space where they are sure they won't be bothered or called.

They sleep, eat fish and maybe meet some Force entities along the way.

Just... old codywan, with disabilities, having a week of rest and healing. Chilling. It's everything I wish for them in a post-Order 66 era.

I shit you not. Magic is used instead of the Force, but everything is very recognisable and the story is great! Lot of Cody's brothers are there.

A stunning mission fic, 64 000 words long, where the Separatist experiment biological warefare on a neutral planet and the 212th get caught in the middle.

Down to less than a hundred soldiers, they must fight an entire planet for their survival. Buckle up! Clones Wars Plots! Zombies Nightmares! With sequel!

I cannot stress enough how much you need it. If you like action, this is the fic for you.

Sith Obi-Wan

Really not my kind fic. I headcanon the very bone of Obi-Wan personality as selfless. And to be Sith is rooted in selfishness.

Imcompatible in its essence. Does not work.

In this fic, it works. Sith Empire, so it explains Obi-Wan being Sith. Unexpected kind of A/B/O. Warning for Obi-Wan/212th battalion. The codywan is there and ready to do damage. Revenge ahead. Less than 6000 words, maximum impact.

Glimmerglanger strikes again. It was great.

Dark Sider Obi-Wan

Not to be confused: Obi-Wan is not a Sith there.

He is an ex-padawan who left the Order to fight a war for children against adults, then joined another war, then another war and another and another...

By the time he realised he strayed from the Light, he has cease to care about it. He is good at war and they always say if you're good at something, you should be paid for it. A galactic war may be the peak of his career, if it wasn't such a strange war. It doesn't quite make sense, and Obi-Wan's weakness is definitively curiosity.

Meanwhile, Commander Cody has it with this dark sider ruining things. He may be a fearsome separatist general, but Cody is no light weight himself. If the man is going to drop gauntlets left and right, than Cody is going to damn well one pick one himself.

Let's see who is the better fighter and strategic mastermind.

Time-Loop!!! Palpatine realise Obi-Wan can kick Anakin's ass and decide he is the one he wants as his apprentice. Then, with sith powers, he tries his best to break him.

Obi-Wan is at the end of his rope. He has lived through many lives, all of them horrible, all of them failures. At this point, he wished he could join the Force. Seriously. Depression. Suicide attempt. The work. But Obi-Wan isn't alone. And those who love him will save him. And the Universe along the way.

While I absolutely love Satine and Obi-Wan debate over peace, war, peacekeepers and diplomatic agreetments, Satine short talk with Anakin holds a special place for me.

Obi-Wan presents Anakin as "General Skywalker" and Anakin, who already noticed the tension between Obi-Wan and Satine, just says

Anakin: I am your servant, my lady. Satine: I remember a time when Jedi were not generals but peace keepers. So far Satine has keep her debate with Obi-Wan and here she just seems to be trying to see Anakin´s take in the Jedi´s new role in the war. Anakin: We are protectors, Highness. Yours at the moment, we fight for peace. Satine: What an amusing contradiction.

Anakin stays silent after this and looks at Obi-Wan as if asking him what´s her problem and Obi-Wan adds Obi-Wan: What Master Skywalker means is that we are acting at the behest of your highness to protect you. Satine says she didn´t ask for protection and Obi-Wan answers but your court did.

Anakin is very uncomfortable around Satine , he just knows his mission here is to protect her as she´s the leader of thousand of neutral worlds, so he keeps cold proffesionalism and respect while talking with her and when asked for his reason for supporting the war, he answers "We fight for peace" which is actually very in character for him, all his life the one time he has seen positive changes was with the help of an army, be it Naboo´s invasion, Geonosis or his own dream of freeing the slaves by becoming a Jedi in the sense of becoming a powerful warrior.

Satine believes this is a contradiction, something Anakin tells to himself to be able to play his role in the war as a Jedi but she doesn´t know Anakin isn´t a traditional Jedi and that he´s being serious about protecting by attacking to get peace and it´s something he deeply cares about because he knows very well how´s to be powerless and how hard is to get peace by peaceful means from that position.

Then when Anakin notices Satine and Obi-Wan obvious care for each other despite their bitter words his face is priceless. He understands there´s a lot of story he doesn´t know about them and that they care for each other deeply so he gets curious about her story and asks obi-wan.

Obi-Wan tells him he and Qui-Gon were given the mission to keep her safe and for a year they stayed protecting Satine from bounty hunters and grow close during that time. Anakin´s face authomatically changes as he pictures as teenager Satine dealing with ruling a world in ruins on her own and asks Obi-Wan why he didn´t stay to help her, Obi-Wan answers he had to leave for another mission but admits he feels regret over it.

At the end of their conversation Anakin offers to go and see their troops to give Obi-Wan more time with Satine.

So Anakin understands where Satine is coming from and feels empatetic to the burden she had to keep from a young age, he likes to tease Obi-Wan over his love/crush on her but actually only feels deep respect and understanding for Satine.

Anakin´s final words to Obi-Wan about her are that she´s a very "remarkable woman" and feels happy Obi-Wan has someone like her in his life.

Satine and Anakin are coming from very different backgrounds, so their point of view seems to be opposite to each other but just like Satine knows for a fact sometimes you can´t just argue your way out of a conflict, Anakin actually respects Satine pacifism and isn´t so affected by her observations about the Jedi Order because his idea of what a peacekeeper isn´t just the diplomatic one, he comes from a world in which words just were not useful to survive, so Anakin is always ready to protect using violence back, he´s a warrior at heart, that´s the meaning of his name actually but this doesn´t mean he doesn´t see the beauty of peace, the effort and strenght it takes to try to make lasting change by peaceful means and the kind of character someone has to develop to make that a reality, especially for a world like Mandalore that was so hurt by a Civil War.

a/n: I'm gonna try to add in more characters than the ones I'm thinking about so have some platonic headcannons

I can't see him finding someone he really cares about anywhere besides the temple, especially considering the fact of how many padawans there were during the war with their own squadrons and stuff

he probably found you through someone else, through a meet up with a different battalion for a certain mission. or maybe he found out about you through just walking through the temple.

either way, he gets intrigued by something. you're fighting style? your personality? just something about you puts him off, not in a "I should be suspicious of this person", but in a "why is this person like this?"

after whatever mission or meeting is over, he will continue to pursue you. at first, you thought it was just because he found you suspicious. did he think you were working with the CIS? you really hoped not, after all, he is on the council. was he trying to get you kicked out?

while your panicking over your loyalties and how you can prove him wrong (if he even is thinking that way, which we know he isn't), obi wan is just trying to figure out how he can either elevate you to a position where he can talk more freely with you, or convince you that he's needs your help again for another mission.

of course, while it's in his mind, he really doesn't want to use lethal force against your master just to become your master. he knows there are better ways at solving this, so he has to come up with a plan.

he decides that maybe he shouldn't be fully alone in his thoughts, and while he doesn't tell anakin the full story, he does say that he has a few worries about your master, and how he thinks you would be better suited as his padawan.

while anakin is skeptical, especially since you were only almost a year and a half until becoming a jedi knight, but is convinced when obi wan brings up the fact that even he was deemed to late to bring into the order.

so through some bullshit and possibly funny hijinks between obi wan and anakin, your master is put out of the game. whether thats because he was critically injured, or if they actually just killed him, or (what probably ends up happening) is ruining his reputation so bad that it's the order that kicks them out.

while your panicking even more because who would want a padawan who's former master got kicked out of the order, obi wan is able to convince the council he could take you under his lineage. while the council was originally planning on giving you to plo koon, they are totally cool with obi wan taking over.

I mean, it's obi wan, why the hell should they worry?

after you hear of obi wans plan you're relieved. you can continue your training without the worry of the stigma to you caused by your former master, and your new master is one who's revered by the whole temple! of course you wouldn't say no.

after you've been accepted under obi wan, everything becomes more mellowed out. every worry you've had you've been able to talk with obi wan about, every single issue you've had with lightsabers has been fixed by him. you're so happy that everything has worked out.

anakin, while suspicious, doesn't say anything on the fact that obi wan seems too happy that everything has worked out. in fact, he forgets about his doubts because he realizes that he likes to spar with you.

and obi wan? obi wan is just happy everything has worked out so well. he's much more stricter than other masters, and definitely not as lenient as anakin and ahsoka, but he's not like c'baoth strict.

anytime that there's a battle, and he doesn't know where you are exactly, it worries him. in fact, it's one of the things he's confided in you, so you try your best to stay nearby, even if it does hamper your own training.

he also gets worried about when you aren't nearby him in general. for example, you remember one time when you and ahsoka were somewhere in a town during a mission, you had forgotten to answer his one com message, and when you finally checked you comm, there was a bunch of missed calls. while you immediately commed him back, it did make you start to ask him permission for things.

another thing that you found weird, or 'overbearing', was he was very against you fighting enemies alone, as well. even if they were just small time soldiers or bounty hunters, he would ask of you to try and avoid confrontations as a whole.

one time, when you and ahsoka were sparring, he saw ahsoka almost hit you with (what he assumed to be) a spare piece of metal that was put up against the wall with the force. while you obviously dodged and sliced it in half, he gave both of you a warning and told you not to do that again, unless it was under an order.

while all of it was more stricter and harsh than your former master, or any master in general, it wasn't like you were going to leave because of a few rules he wanted you to follow! besides, they weren't as bad as compared to others, like c'boath.

however, one day, while you're waiting for obi wan to finish something on a mission, someone approaches you and asks to talk to you. while you're apprehensive, your alarm bells start ringing as soon as you see it's your former master.

you were going to walk away, until they tell you that they weren't there to plead their case to you. that caught your attention. you turned back around, and while you were still suspicious, you let them talk.

they told you about after the first mission with obi wan, they told you about how obi wan was always approaching them about you. while originally they thought it was because he didn't like you, he soon realized it was something much bigger than that.

before he could get any further, anakin and ahsoka appear, and that scares off your former master. while they hurry off, anakin and ahsoka are just as confused as you.

while your relationship with obi wan doesn't change really, at all, it's something that keeps in your mind even as you can't seem to find your former master anywhere.

eventually, you give up the hunt after a while of dead ends. there is no point in finding out something that doesn't seem to exist. maybe they were trying to plead their case, but in a way that demonized obi wan.

overall, obi wan isn't the worst person to have looking over your shoulder, as he's not so overbearing it's increasingly noticeable, and he treats his issues not with other people, but with you. however, he does get rid of anything and everything that could lead to people discovering the true reason why you even became his padawan.

Can you tell me about your other Swtor Ocs?

By 'other' I'm gonna assume 'ones who are not my main lads Cas and Khel' haha. So let's see....

Damaskh, aka Cipher Twelve: My Imperial Agent, who actually doesn't follow the game's IA storyline. Genderfluid half Zeltron, half Sith pureblood. His specialties are disguise and infiltration, primarily for longterm undercover missions. He's a background character - I really don't have a lot of actual story or plot for him, except when he pops up occasionally in Khel's world, but I do find his 'casual but deadly' manner to be immensely entertaining.

Darius Serapis: My canon Republic Trooper, and Caspian's older brother. He's a die-hard Republic loyalist with a no-nonsense attitude, sometimes harsh and unyielding, but he's got an excellent reputation among the lower ranks as a commander who never leads from the back or leaves a soldier behind. He and Cas do share a fierce family loyalty to one another, even if they disagree on a lot of things.

Emryn Solari: A Republic medic who's highly Force sensitive but actually declined to join the Jedi, preferring to serve as a field medic in the military. He often comes off as naive and mild-mannered, but he's surprisingly level-headed when working under fire. He was Caspian's best friend when they were growing up on Corellia, and he joins Cas' crew as their medic during Chapter 3 of the JK story (basically replacing Doc, who doesn't join up in my canon).

Maahes: A Sith battle prodigy who defected to the Jedi at the tail end of the Great War, and who is now a respected if somewhat maverick Jedi Master. Stern but kind, he has an understated sense of humour which I adore, and is often tasked with chaperoning groups of Jedi-in-training on field trips. He's also Caspian's former mentor, and something of an unspoken father figure for Cas.

Shod'al Kur, aka Darth Syphon: Similar vibes to the Sith Inquisitor story, only a few generations earlier, aka former slave who clawed his way to power and now sits on the Dark Council. He's far more about cunning than brute force, and always has a feel out for the pulse of how things are going in the Sith Order. He's a newer OC, so I don't know a lot more about him yet - but I do know that he went through Sith training with Maahes, and the two became friends, then lovers, and while Maahes defected, Shod'al refused to give up his place of power and remained in the Empire.

Vanirr Kel-Su - My canon-ish Jedi Consular. He embodies everything the Jedi are supposed to be, in the layman's eye - good and bad. He's calm and scholarly, an exceptional diplomat and excellent at sneaking around to find the path of least violence, both literally and figuratively. Unfortunately, he knows he's all of this, and so he's also quite preachy and thinks he can handle anything, especially all those dangerous artefacts out there. He and Caspian went through Jedi training together - they didn't get along then, and they don't get along now.

Ibis: A non-canon-story smuggler who's really out there just to cause some chaos and then sit back with popcorn. They live for danger and entertainment - credits are just a bonus. Like Damaskh, more of a background character till they deign to tell be more about themself.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi is a great example of fandoms ruining their own movie experience. Often fandoms are right when they think a movie doesn’t deliver on their favorite franchise. But in The Last Jedi, the Star Wars fandom kind of proved that their heads are in a terrible place.

I will explain.

Movies are meant to reach in and grab your emotions. You’re supposed to get out of your own head, and the story is supposed to get under your mental defenses, so that you not only suspend disbelief, but suspend your inner film critic and enjoy an experience/learn what the movie is trying to tell you.

If a movie has terrible form and repellant content, like bad acting or a message like “cold-blooded murder is neat” then people generally don’t get to have that experience because the movie couldn’t reach in and grab your emotions.

The Last Jedi was not a bad movie. I know for a fact that it one hundred percent DID what it set out to do, in the theaters. What happened was, you Star Wars fans enjoyed the movie while you were watching it. Then you got home and got in your own heads and read what some other people thought and watched some Mark Hamill interviews and retroactively decided you actually didn’t like it.

I know you liked it because I was in the theaters with you. I saw TLJ on opening night, in a packed theater of dressed-up fans. Then I saw it three more times in theaters. I heard fans clap when Luke fought Kylo Ren and said “see you around, kid.” I heard them laugh when he threw the lightsaber over his shoulder. I heard them applaud when Snoke got cut in half. I heard no groans of disbelief during Holdo’s Hyperdrive ramming—you could’ve heard a pin drop, exactly as the filmmakers intended. I heard fans holding their breath or whispering, “please please please” when Rey said to Kylo Ren, “Please don’t go this way.” I heard, all four times, thunderous applause during the ending shot, when a kid with a broom is revealed to have the Force.

‘When the lights came on and everyone was leaving the theater, I heard NO ONE saying:

“I can’t believe they ruined Luke.”

“What was with Holdo? Hyperdrive doesn’t work like that.”

“I hate Rey, she’s a Mary-Sue.”

“What was with that casino planet scene, that was useless!”

I heard people excitedly talking about how awesome the film was. I heard them repeating the jokes to each other, or sharing their favorite parts. I heard them hoping Ben Solo would be redeemed for the next movie. The closest I ever got to anything even approaching negative was, “What was with the blue milk alien?” Which is fair. But my point is, even when the movie was over and we were leaving the theaters, the fans loved it. At the time. When the movie was all they had to base their opinion on.

I sat next to a young man who is now the loudest Internet Proclaimer of TLJ’s supposed failure, on opening night. But at the time, when the movie ended, he said, “that’s what The Force Awakens should’ve been! That was so great.”

Then he went home and watched EFAP and came back and said, “yeah I liked it at first but that’s because I was stupid and didn’t know any better. Now I know it’s terrible.”

What? No, you’re not stupid! It was a good movie. It said exactly what it wanted to say, and it had your attention and your emotions the whole time. It even set up the next film for great, new, unexpected success (regardless of how ROS squandered that opportunity.)

But this is how a lot of fans are.

They have pre-set expectations of what they want. Or they don’t have any expectations and they wait for their favorite influencer to tell them what to think. And then, even when a movie is good, they change their own minds about it later to line up with what they thought they wanted.

Not what made the most sense. Not what made the best story. Not what could be an enduring classic. Not what grabbed the emotions most effectively. Just “I want what I want.”

Guess what, at the end of Casablanca, the hero doesn’t get the girl. He loses her. But he becomes a man who takes risks and goes back to living life because of his experience, as sad as it may have been. If audiences back then could complain loudly enough on the internet and get what they want, Casablanca would have had a crappy sequel where the guy gets the girl, and the whole first movie is ruined. Or the filmmakers wouldn’t have been brave enough to do what the story needed in the first place.

TLJ is the perfect example of a good movie ruined by it’s own supposed fandom, who just want what they want, and can’t admit when a movie was good, or even that it moved them, because it’s not what they wanted, in hindsight.

“And the Jedi rebellion has been foiled.” Chancellor Palpatine’s haggard voice rings out across the staging area on Kamino, where his hologram looms above the legion of clone troopers. “The remaining Jedi will be hunted down and defeated.”

Remembering what Tech said on Kaller about reports of the Jedi committing treason, you immediately appear at the forefront of Hunter’s mind. He wonders if you were a part of this supposed rebellion. He wonders if you’re even still alive. And the more lines they’re fed about the war being over and the Jedi turning on the Republic, the more things just don’t make any sense.

You were devoted to the Jedi Order and what it stood for. Although it was also the main reason keeping you both apart, he admired your dedication and your commitment to peace across the galaxy. Hunter knows you inside and out, and he knows without a doubt you would never do something like this.

“The attempt on my life has left me scarred and deformed.” The Chancellor continues, and Wrecker makes a remark that Hunter ignores as he catches sight of a child up on the platform next to Nala Se. “But I assure you, my resolve has never been stronger.”

“What is it?”

Hunter shifts his eyes to Tech, then back up to the platform. The girl is gone. “Nothing.”

“The Republic will be reorganized into the first Galactic Empire.” The regs shout and cheer at the Chancellor’s proclamation, and Hunter shares a skeptical look with Tech. “For a safe and secure society.”

“Still don’t think the regs are programmed?” Tech asks, sarcastically.

On the way to the assembly, Tech and Wrecker had continued their debate on the programming found in all the clones, even their own squad, and how it keeps them from falling out of line. More easily controlled. Hunter once again thinks back on what happened on Kaller. The way the clones who had fought beside General Billaba had suddenly turned on her. Though Wrecker insists he isn’t programmed, Hunter can’t help but wonder if there are any other clones who weren’t affected like them.

All clones file out of the staging area and make their way to the mess hall for the scheduled meal hour. As they walk down the corridor, Hunter senses someone following him and his squad. They turn and look down at a young human female, the same one Hunter saw standing next to Nala Se during the assembly.

She introduces herself as Omega. She seems friendly enough, but Hunter and the rest of the squad are confused on how she knows them. Hunter steps forward and asks what she’s doing on Kamino. But before she can answer, Nala Se interrupts and takes her away. Hunter’s eyes follow Omega as she leaves, catching her timid wave goodbye.

Hunter frowns, intrigued. But he doesn’t dwell on the girl any longer. He turns back to his squad and tells them to go on to the mess hall and that he would catch up with them. All move to follow his order, except Crosshair. He stares at Hunter with discerning eyes.

“What is it?” Hunter asks.

“You’re going to contact her,” Crosshair takes the toothpick from between his teeth and points it accusingly at Hunter, “aren’t you?”

“Even if I was,” Hunter crosses his arms, “that is none of your concern.”

“It is if you find out she isn’t dead.”

“If she is alive, we’re not going to kill her.”

“You would disobey orders again?” Crosshair’s brow furrows. “For her? Your little—”

“I’d choose my next words carefully if I were you.”

Crosshair rolls his eyes. “She’s a Jedi.”

“She’s our friend.”

“Your friend.”

Hunter sighs, dropping his arms. “She wanted to be yours, too.”

“Doesn’t matter anymore.” Crosshair frowns before he turns, head turned to the side to look back at Hunter. “Whether she’s alive or not, we have our orders.”

Hunter shakes his head as he watches Crosshair walk away, wondering what has gotten into his brother. But he mentally pushes that thought aside for another time as he quickly finds a maintenance closet and shuts himself inside.

Hunter pulls out his compact holoprojector and enters your frequency. He waits and waits but there is no response from you. He tries again, but there is still no answer. He hates to think what that might mean, but decides to hold out hope that you’re alive. Somewhere out there.

So with a defeated sigh, he exits the closet and heads to the mess hall. The final one of his squad to arrive.

The journey away from the Core Worlds is long and quiet. You sit in the cockpit of the stolen attack shuttle without hearing so much as a whisper from any of the younglings. Occasionally you glance over your shoulder to check on them where they sit strapped into the seats welded along the walls. They are all awake and undoubtedly neither able nor willing to close their eyes for even a second lest they relive the horrors of Coruscant.

The escape from the Jedi Temple was a treacherous one. You’d run into more clone troopers and, tragically, not all of the younglings you’d fled with made it off planet. Out of the six you found hiding in the vent only four remain. Gungi, Tara, Petro, and Lyra.

You try your best not to dwell on the loss, but nevertheless it weighs heavy in your heart. As does your confrontation with Anakin.

When you exit out of hyperspace, your thoughts are interrupted as you gaze on the familiar blue and brown orb that is Ord Mantell. The Mid Rim planet is a somewhat welcome sight. As an established trading post for travelers, most of them being of the nefarious kind, you knew this would be a good place to lose any trail from Coruscant you might have left behind. It also helps that the Jedi Order had an informant here. One that you’re counting on to continue honoring that arrangement.

You touch down in the first landing depot you spot, not intending to use the shuttle to get off world. At least if everything goes the way you hope it does. This part of the planet is lurking with smugglers and more seedy types, but you know the risk is worth taking to get the help you so desperately need.

After letting out a deep sigh, you stand and approach the younglings. They look up at you from where they sit, waiting for you to tell them what happens next. It’s a heavy burden you must bear, to be responsible for the fate of these children. But you have no other choice.

“This is only our first stop.” You decide to be straightforward with them, but also as gentle in your delivery as you can. “We have a long way to go until we can settle down. And even then, not for too long.”

They all nod, silent still as they consider your words. They’re old enough to understand the severity of the situation you’re all in now. The mysterious cause of it plagues them, as it does you, but you are determined to find answers one way or another.

None of you have any possessions besides the clothes on your backs and the lightsabers on your hips. So, before exiting you rummage through a storage compartment near the rear of the shuttle and find a canvas knapsack. One by one you collect each of their lightsabers and carefully place them inside, along with your own. You shoulder the bag and instruct them to pull the hoods of their robes over their heads before leading them out of the shuttle.

Your small group walks across the depot but are stopped when a Sullustan approaches you. He plants himself in front of you and holds out a hand to keep you from going any further. His short stature doesn’t rob him of his brashness.

“I’ll need to scan your ship in.”

You wave your hand in front of his face, already sensing his weak mindedness. “You don’t need to scan our ship.”

“I don’t need to scan your ship,” he repeats, mindlessly.

“This ship is abandoned.”

“This ship is abandoned.”

“You never saw us.”

“I never saw you.”

He walks past you toward the ship and you look down at the children, tilting your head for them to follow you.

“How will we travel without a ship?” Petro speaks up, walking faster to keep beside you.

You reply without looking down at him. Your eyes are trained on your surroundings and your senses are on high alert. “We’re getting a new one.”

“How?”

“I know someone.”

“But—”

“Trust me, Petro. And stay close,” you warn when you see Gungi and Lyra starting to fall behind. The Wookie and Togruta’s wandering eyes shoot back over to you and they rush forward. “This is not a good place to get lost.”

Tara’s shoulders cave inward as she eyes a dingy alleyway. “Is this planet safe for us?”

“I suspect no planet will be safe for us,” you tell her truthfully. “But we may find help on this one.”

You stop when you find the familiar stairs that descend between the narrow opening in the wall. A green light at the bottom dimly leads the way toward the underground cantina. You look behind you to make sure all four children are still with you before taking the first step. When you enter the cantina there are only two patrons. They briefly spare you a glance before they go back to their drinks.

“Who can help us here?” Petro asks, voice tinged in skepticism.

Just as he speaks the person you were hoping to find appears from the back office. Her shorter height does nothing to take away from the strength her wide frame exudes. The color of her green scales and yellow eyes are enhanced by the glow of the interior lights. When she spots your figure, you remove the hood of your cloak and her eyes light with recognition.

“Hello, Cid.” You take a step forward. “It’s been a while.”

“Sure has.” Her long walking stick thuds against the floor as she approaches. “Lots changed since we’ve seen each other.”

“It has,” you agree. “Which is why you can probably imagine why I’ve come to see you.”

Cid chuckles, a brief and harsh sound. Her gaze drops to the four children behind you and she stops by the bar, leaning her stick against it and crossing her arms.

“Yes. I can imagine that you need something from me.”

“We need new clothes and credits,” you list off, “and something to eat if you can spare anything.”

“Anything else?” she asks, sarcasm dripping off each word. But it doesn’t deter you.

“A ship.”

“That’s quite a lot you’re asking of me.” She grabs her stick again and stalks forward, circling you and the younglings with keen eyes. “Especially with this small brood you’ve got with you. What’s to stop me from turning you in? I’m sure the reward for reporting people with your…” she pauses as she comes around again to stand in front of you, “abilities would earn me more credits than you’d be taking from me.”

The children gasp and cling tight to you. Your expression hardens at Cid’s insinuation.

“Because I know for a fact having me owe you one would come in handy for you.” You look down at the children, nervous energy radiating off of them. “And despite that tough exterior you like to tout around I know you actually have a heart beneath it all.”

Cid frowns. Looking to her two patrons, she lowers her voice. “Keep it down, will you? I don’t need anybody hearing any of that.”

You smirk.

“All right.” She rolls her eyes. “I’ll help you.”

You feel the children’s hold on you loosen and their nerves settle.

“Thank you, Cid.” You shoot her a grateful smile and turn to usher the children to sit at one of the tables.

“Now don’t go forgetting how this works.” Cid’s voice makes you turn around, eyeing her curiously. “I need you to do something for me, remember? And it’ll be something big for all you’re asking in return.”

“Can’t I just owe you one?” you ask, frowning. “Now isn’t exactly a good time to draw attention to ourselves.”

“You’ve got serious heat on you. Who knows when, or if, I’ll ever see you again to collect. All I need you to do is travel to the other side of the planet and find something of great value that was stolen from a client of mine. A simple extraction.”

“If it’s so simple, why can’t someone else do it?”

“You were always one of the best, kid.” The compliment she offers, rarely given, admittedly works on you. “And I want the best.”

You look back at the children, considering how this added risk might effect them. Really, it’d be better not to have owing Cid hanging over your head. And if it means getting everything you need then perhaps it’s best to just get it done now.

After a few moments of internal debate, you nod your agreement. However, you charge her with keeping the children safe while you’re gone. With a wave of her hand she tells you not to worry before instructing you to meet her in her office for the mission details.

Turning back to the children, you set the knapsack filled with your lightsabers on the table and push it toward Petro.

“Keep this close,” you instruct him. “And do not take them out no matter what happens. Do you understand?”

The young Jedi nods his head. Gungi speaks up, asking how you’ll complete the mission without yours.

“A good warrior cannot rely solely on his or her weapon. They must look inward and trust their training.” Your sage advice causes their gazes to lower in thought. “Something you all will unfortunately be forced to learn much sooner than expected.”

After a promise to return by nightfall, you make your way through the cantina and into Cid’s office.

When you return you find the younglings gathered around the holotable playing Dejarik with Cid. You pause to observe them. They’re dressed in new garments and smiling and laughing with one another, a welcome sight after escaping Coruscant.

Cid spots you and waves for you to head into her office. With the case in hand, you follow after her. You aren’t sure what’s inside. Your curiosity was certainly pique after you fought off a half dozen Zygerrians for it, but there’s a bioscanner on the lock that prevented you from opening it. So you place the case down on top of Cid’s desk. Whatever it is, you hope it was worth it.

Cid grabs the case by the top handle and inspects the lock. She shakes her head and grumbles to herself before slipping it underneath the desk.

“So everything’s good?” you ask. “I did what you asked.”

“Yeah, yeah,” she turns and waves a hand over her head, “I know. And I’ve got what you asked for. Right here.”

She bends down to grab a small crate below the last shelf against her back wall. It lands with a heavy thud when she drops it unceremoniously on top of the desk. You take a step forward and open the top of the crate to find new sets of clothes for you and the children, rations, and a large pouch of credits.

“And your ship will be waiting in landing port nine.”

This takes a huge weight off of your shoulders. So much so that you can feel yourself standing just a bit taller.

“Thank you.” You look up at her and your lips curve in gratitude. “Truly.”

She waves you off. “None of that mushy stuff. Consider it business as usual.”

“But that’s just it. It isn’t.” You close the crate and your smile drops, your expression turns serious. “No one can know we were here, Cid. For their sake more than mine. They’re just kids.”

“You forget, Jedi.” Cid crosses her arms, fixing you with a look. “I’m good with secrets.”

Star Wars 'What if?' AUs, Part 4

Darth Bane’s Rule of Two never quite caught on, but the Sith of today don’t actually know much about each other because there’s so few of them. Palpatine’s plan fails in several key parts because another Sith’s plan got in the way. AND because the Jedi never discounted the idea that the Sith were back - because they never actually left. The Enemy of my Enemy is still my Enemy, and with the Sith all getting in each other’s way, the Jedi and clones manage to eke out a win.

Whatever happened to Dexter Jettser? I’m not knocking what Bail Organa did for the Rebellion, but Dex was Obi-Wan’s friend too, and he already had contacts in low places. So this story would have him either following up on all the things the Jedi Order never had time/experience for (who really ordered the clones, who was the Sith Master, how can we issue a shutdown order to all the Separatist droids?) during the war, or else afterwards he helps give the nascent Rebellion a huge boost.

Anakin gets apprenticed to the most appropriate possible person - Nico Diath!  Who is also from Tatooine, has a family home there in fact, and in canon his Padawan was his nephew. Also, Nico felt a burning hatred for slavery in general and Hutts in particular. Anakin finally gets to (help) free all the slaves, and Nico helps teach him about attachment and the perils thereof, and how to love your family without being so possessive of them you fall.

Supposedly it was one of Darth Plagueis’ experiments with midichlorians that led to Anakin’s birth - what if he was born to someone else? Shaak Ti could be good. Breha Organa would be too young, unfortunately. Mother Talzin would be interesting, especially since males aren’t valued on Dathomir - would Anakin take Maul’s place in canon, or would he be so powerful she’d keep him with her? Or, what if he was born to An’ya Kuro, aka Dark Woman. She’s got very unusual, and cruel ideas about proper use of the Force (while still considering herself Light!) and how to teach it. But would she consider a ‘Force-sent’ pregnancy something she would follow through on?

Or maybe Dark Woman is the one to find and apprentice Anakin. If you know anything about her, you'll realize this could be a story just as dark as canon, but I’m suggesting either Anakin ran off like Jon Antilles did, or Jon and his friends (Nico, Knoll, Fay) found him and removed him from Dark Woman’s influence.

Speaking of Dark Woman’s former padawans, one of them was Aurra Sing. A misunderstanding led Aurra to start developing a lifelong hatred of Jedi, and she killed several of them. What if Sidious decided to have more than one ‘Jedi Killer’ as his clone template? Supposedly Force Sensitives can’t be cloned because they turn out brain dead since the Force knows who they are, BUT either you can ignore that or - harvest the DNA, kill Aurra, then create the clones. She’s not alive for the clones to be affected by.

Or, canonically Aurra was on Tatooine watching the Boonta Eve Classic. What if she decided to try and take Anakin as her padawan?

Aurra Sing got kidnapped by pirates (which she thought Dark Woman arranged as part of her training), but what if she got rescued by Mandalorians? I’m thinking True Mandalorians, so she would be there to keep them from dying/getting killed like in canon. She faces off against the Jedi on Galidraan, some of them recognize her, and after it’s all over she goes back to the Temple just long enough to tell them how messed up Dark Woman’s training is, before leaving again. This leads to the Jedi Council taking a closer look at how initiates and padawans are taught and making changes, which ultimately, when combined with the True Mandalorians becoming the leading faction on Mandalore, derails Sidious’ plans.

Next idea involves a time crunch - Obi-Wan’s time on Melidaan (or Mandalore, protecting Satine) coinciding with the clones being taught on Kamino. Early in the process (when the oldest clones are physically 10-12) the clones rebel and escape Kamino. They either end up on Melidaan and help the Young take down the Elders before helping them set up a new community together, or they end up on Concordia trying to track down Pre Viszla so one of them can challenge him for the Darksaber and the clones can become the newest faction to rule Mandalore. Or they don’t have enough fuel/need an emergency landing and end up on Melidaan on their way to Mandalore. Basically a lot of teens and tweens getting their Lord of the Fly on, but a happier ending where they kill all the bad adults (including Sidious and Plagueius).

The Jedi Temple is apparently on top of some type of Force Nexus which allows it to be much bigger on the inside than outside, and they have a giant menagerie full of plants and animals inside it. Sounds like a great place for all the Jedi in the Temple to retreat to when Darth Vader and the 501st come to kill them all. And who really knows how a Force Nexus works? Maybe enough force sensitives crying out for other Jedi to help/to stop the clones from hurting their friends transports the whole Temple (and maybe all Jedi around the galaxy) to, like Lothal or Tython (and fries all the chips).

Barriss Offee is the one sent back in time, to her child body, young enough in the midst of her freak out she runs into a still-alive Sifo-Dyas. She tries to pass off her future knowledge and panic as dreams of the future, he talks about his own visions, and Barriss ends up explaining what his visions meant. Together they start a new Jedi schism aimed at non-violence in order to prevent the Jedi being involved in the coming war.

Apparently Etain Tur-Maken was in the Temple during Darth Vader’s attack on it and died defending a group of younglings. What if Anakin was completely not shielding his mind while leading the attack and when he got near enough he heard her thoughts about her clone lover, Darman, and their son? He’d start thinking about his unborn child with Padme and just…stall out.  Consider also that he could then look around at the children and see a bunch that, coloring-wise at least, look like him and/or Padme. Etain manages to subdue Anakin while he’s caught in a mental maelstrom of worry for his unborn child.

After the Rusaan Reformation, the Jedi took the rule of dismantling their armies to mean no more Knights. All the Jedi on Coruscant are part of the Services Corps (Agricorp, Exploricop, Educorp, Medicorp). Anyone wanting to use lightsabers on a regular basis or be a warrior monk ends up transferring to one of the other temples (or maybe they have their own Temple on, like, Tython or Lothal). Palpatine falls into the same misunderstanding that the Senate has, thinking that the majority of the Jedi are the ones on Coruscant, so his ultimate plan for taking over the galaxy is different since it doesn’t involve clones chipped to turn on their Jedi. Then when Palpatine stages his takeover he’s blindsided by the large number of Jedi Knights that had been wandering around the galaxy fixing problem ‘as the force wills’.

I was wondering what you thought of the Deception arc in TCW? Personally with most of the Jedi’s decisions during TCW i feel like they’re making the best choices they can, but with this arc it seems almost uncharacteristically cruel. Even if Anakin had not been attached to Obi-Wan (which the council surely knew he was?), his death would’ve been very painful to Anakin. Doesn’t that kind of go against Jedi compassion and the kindness we consistently see?

Again I’d love your take on this, but either way I’ll continue to enjoy your blog in the future!

So I lightly touched on the "Obi-Wan undercover" arc in this older, more general post about Anakin's relationship with the Jedi Council, but, hey, let's zoom in!

Not telling Anakin... was wrong. Plain and simple.

Yoda says so himself.

But the train of thought was:

"The chancellor - leader of the free world - is gonna die if we don't do this, so the stakes are high. We gotta send Obi-Wan deep undercover behind enemy lines, but Anakin is very close to him and known for being volatile, so there's a 50/50 chance he'll go AWOL and fuck the mission up and those are unacceptable odds."

It's not an excuse, but a justification.

And, in a slightly different context, Anakin seems to use this justification too.

Hell, if anything, Anakin thinks the Jedi should employ even harsher methods in the war and that their values are holding them back.

It's just that, in this case, it hit closer to home.

There's a "hypocrisy" argument to be made, but honestly... that's the Clone War in a nutshell for you!

The Jedi repeatedly told the Senate and the Chancellor "please don't ask us to fight, we're not made for this, we're diplomats, we act on compassion not violence”...

... because they knew that's what the war would force them to do: compromise on their values, tarnish every principle that defines them and that they hold dear, turn them into hypocrites.

Yes, the Jedi are compassionate, but they're also at war, and they're forced to pick between two shitty choices on the daily.

And the deciding factor, EVERY time, is not "which option is the better/more compassionate one" but "which option does less damage?"

Lying to Anakin is just one of these hard "no other choice" choices.

And EVERY time they see an opportunity to step back from the fighting and let diplomacy start again, guess what Palpatine says?

"Fuck you, go back to the front."

And when you listen to Dave Filoni's commentary on this arc, it turns out that this whole plan by Dooku and Morallo Eval was actually engineered by Palpatine to:

1) Distance him even further from the Jedi so Palpatine can swoop in and manipulate him more and more.

2) Set the board for another Anakin vs Dooku confrontation, to gauge how much more powerful Anakin has become.

"Y’know, ultimately, what we realize is that the whole thing is a fake-out on the Jedi. That Dooku is conspiring with Sidious to set-up this whole bounty hunter plot to make the Jedi believe that they have once again saved the day, and it’s all an effort to get Anakin isolated. So what I really liked about this story that, y’know— as George handed it out, was: we tell the story that’s really about Anakin and Palpatine trying to tempt him to the Dark Side… and we tell it more from Obi-Wan’s point of view. And you see this whole other tale that’s going on, and we check in with Palpatine and Anakin every now and then, until finally, it’s really about them and their struggle. And we see that this is a point that Anakin really wasn’t ready to become the Sith apprentice. He wasn’t strong enough, I think there’s a possibility that Dooku would’ve killed him here." - Dave Filoni, The Clone Wars: “Obi-Wan undercover” video commentary, 2012

So, again, like... sure. The Jedi made a mistake.

But ultimately, had Palpatine not hatched this particular plan, hell, had he not engineered a whole war designed to corrupt the Jedi's morals... that mistake would never have been made in the first place.

To use an analogy:

If a dude tries to make his way in a pitch black room (the Jedi playing catch-up to Sidious' plans) and steps on a Lego brick (their mistakes)... you don't blame him for it, you blame the guy who turned the light off and emptied the Lego box on the floor in the first place (Sidious).

You did nothing wrong and your story was wonderful. This fandom is so immature and braindead. Anyway I would love to hear your head canons about Bail!! I know you love him but I dunno if Ive ever seen you post why?? so! I present you qith an opportunity to wax poetic about Bail.

Thank you. I think that people who can relate will be able to appreciate it, and those who who can't won't, which is fine.

I love Bail Organa!!!! There is just so much about him to love and I feel like he's such an interesting character, but I really rarely see people appreciating him or using him to his full potential in fanfiction.

He's a senator who loves his people so much. During the clone wars, he was often out fighting on the frontlines. In Clone Wars Gambit, he and Breha sent personal letters to the families of each Alderaanian who died in the war. A lot of senators didn't visit their planets often once they were elected, but Bail always cared about his people and was in constant contact checking in on his planet. When he saw that the Republic wasn't working, he worked with colleagues he trusted to help start a rebellion. His focus in the Senate was on the security of democracy, and that passion continued even as the Republic failed.

I also think his friendship with Padmé is so interesting. He almost reflects Obi-Wan for her when it comes to her relationship with Anakin. He can tell that they're together, but he won't mention it unless she mentions it first. He worries about her, but he respects her privacy. When Anakin and Obi-Wan are away he goes to check in on her often, and when he sees her worried sick about them (him), his thought is like, "these poor kids, I wish I could help them."

The conversations he has with Obi-Wan in Clone Wars Gambit are so interesting to me. He trusts him before anyone else when he realizes there might be a sensitive mission. He's already losing some faith in the Republic because it's such a scary time, but he still trusts Obi-Wan, before his fellow senators (other than Padmé) and before the Jedi in general.

Obi-Wan is able to relax with him a little bit in a way he can't relax with the other Jedi. Who else would he be having a personal dinner party with? I don't think Obi-Wan has many actual friends that would be his friends outside of the war, other than Dex in a way, but Bail seems like he would be a friend to him no matter the context. He remembers his quirks and knows how to communicate with him. I can't remember what book it was in that Obi-Wan and Bail are discussing Anakin and Bail even thinks the two of them are too close, but just like he does for Anakin and Padmé, he doesn't mention it out loud and thinks, "these poor people." I don't think anyone else would have been able to coax him out of hiding in the OWK era.

The very best appeal of Bail Organa though, which is also the reason I can't take shipping him with anyone else seriously, is how much he loves his wife. I would watch an entire series about Bail and Breha Organa. He married into a royal family and took his wife's name, not because of her status, but because he wanted to dedicate himself to her. When he met her, he didn't even want to be a noble anymore - he was running away from that life! Before they met, he was dedicating himself to crossing class boundaries to help those less fortunate than him, and they continued that quest together. Alderaan's government and people were so strong because their queen and viceroy cared about every single one of them.

When Breha wanted a child and was unable to have one, he wanted a family just as much and looked for alternate resources for her. He didn't want to put her through the pain of another miscarriage, but she wanted to keep trying. They saw all of the best fertility experts on Coruscant and Alderaan, but in the end, another solution presented itself. It's so clear in the OWK show that Bail is such an amazing father for Leia. He loved her parents so much, and he loves her even more. They have such great chemistry for genuine friendship as father and daughter, and I think if he'd survived he would have been so proud of the woman she turned out to be. Don't even get me started on the phrasing of "she will be loved with us."

I love him because he is so full of love and he always wants to do what's right. He's knowledgeable about so many things, but he knows how to be careful about what he knows. He notices injustice and finds ways around it, but waits until the right time to stir the pot. It breaks my heart to know what happened to him, and even more to know how Anakin was involved. I wonder if Anakin ever thought about that, but at that point, he'd already killed so many people he loved that he was probably just another layer of sickness and grief. Whenever I watch Rogue One I'm screaming at the end for him not to go!

I don't think anyone will read this far, but that is my shortest possible summary of why I love Bail Organa ❤️

My Han/Leia Fics by Era: Return of the Jedi and beyond

I've written like 20 one-shots this year and figured I'd categorize them by eras, as decided on by me. Here's all the stuff set either during Return of the Jedi or shortly thereafter, listed from shortest to longest. I think the farthest in the future these get is a few years post-ROTJ, but I like to pretend our favorite scoundrel and princess lived quite literally happily ever after.

A Tree Grew on Yavin

Summary: Poe's friends in the Resistance are baffled/skeptical when he describes the animate "Force tree" he grew up with on Yavin IV, but they soon get to see for themselves when Groot, his partner Rocket, and their team of "morons" make contact.

“You know, Poe,” said Rey, as they rehashed the attack run, “that almost sounds like the Force.”

“Wait, is that how the Force works?” said Finn. “Because I've gotten some conflicting reports on that.”

“Nah. I don't have the Force, Rey. I grew up with this tree… It's kind of complicated to explain. But if I had it, I think I'd know.”

“Of course you have the Force, Poe.” Leia entered from the hall. “We all do. It's life's music. The song we make.”

Poe didn't argue, but he shrugged. Fine. Terminology. He wasn't Force-sensitive.

It wasn't until days later, during a lull from the work of settling the remnants of the Resistance in on Ajan Kloss, that the subject came up again.

“We want to know more about that tree,” said Rey, apropos of nothing.

Poe stared blankly at her, and then at the jungle surrounding their new base.

“Which one? And why would I know any more about it than you do? I've never been to Ajan Kloss before, either.”

“Not these trees,” said Finn. “On the Falcon, you said you grew up with a tree, and that's why you're confident you're not Force-sensitive. Why? Rey's been studying the Jedi texts and we asked around a bit, but no one has ever heard of tests for Force-sensitivity involving trees.”

Poe raised an eyebrow. “You've been—who would you even ask about that? Besides the General, of course. She would have been able to tell you.” He frowned. “You also could have just asked me to begin with, you know.”

Rey and Finn eyed him with identical expressions of skepticism.

“You mean, in the cumulative 5 spare seconds since we got here that you haven't been busy setting up landing fields—”

“Building hangars.”

“Organizing patrols.”

“Flying patrols.”

“Eating.”

“Or sleeping?”

“...OK, fair. It's been a little hectic.”

Rey smirked in victory. “So, the tree?”

Poe sighed and settled in for a story. “I warned you it's complicated to explain.”

Both listeners nodded.

“All right, then. So my mother, Shara Bey, flew for the Rebellion—both my parents fought in the Rebellion, but Mom was the pilot.”

A mixed group of mechanics and pilots passing by their table chuckled affectionately. “Everyone knows, Dameron!”

“Er, I didn't, actually,” said Rey.

“Yeah, same,” said Finn.

“Thank you!” He mock-glared at the passing group. “You may think you know all of my stories, especially after hanging around with L'ulo too much, but this context is actually relevant.”

“Someone has to heckle you with the rest of Black Squadron still out on mission!” teased a tech.

“Your mother was a Rebellion pilot, and?” prompted Rey.

“And right at the end of the war, after the second Death Star blew up, when the dregs of the Empire were still coming down, she got pulled onto an undercover mission that Luke Skywalker was running. He needed to get something out of an Imperial research lab. Apparently, the Jedi temple in the Old Republic was built around this massive Force-sensitive tree. The Empire destroyed it, but they kept a few live pieces. For research, I guess.”

Rey's forehead wrinkled thoughtfully. “The Jedi texts on Ahch-To were in a tree. I wonder if it was the same type.”

Poe blinked. “Uhhh… maybe? …You couldn't put books in our Force Tree, but I don't know. Can't rule it out, really.”

Rey shook her head. “Sorry! I'm side-tracking your story. Go on.”

Poe smiled. “So when they got there and tricked their way into the lab, they found these two little Force trees. Skywalker was only expecting to there to be one. At the time, my parents were just about to muster out and go settle down somewhere, so Skywalker gave them second one to take with them and plant. He said he wanted it to be safe somewhere.

“Point is, according to Skywalker, that tree just radiates Force energy and is obviously not an ordinary tree. So it seems highly unlikely that I would never have sensed that growing up if I were Force-sensitive.”

Finn looked vaguely let down. “So… it's this amazingly cool thing, but without the Force—or, without being sensitive to the Force—it's just like a regular tree?” He frowned. “You don't think Skywalker was just pulling your mother's leg, do you? Rey said he's kinda sarcastic…”

“Well, not just like a regular tree. I mean, regular trees don't walk around. Or talk.”

“What?!”

“I said, regular trees don't—”

Finn waved for him to stop. “Yeah, yeah, yeah. Got that. Completely true. You're saying this Force tree does walk and talk? Like a person?”

“Yeah. His name's Groot.” He glanced around at the jungle again, with more satisfaction this time. “He would like it here.”

...

“Commander Dameron! Commander Dameron!”

Poe stifled a groan and rose from his crouch under the X-wing he was working on. “Yes, Threepio?”

“We have just received a communication for you, sir!”

Poe frowned as he ran through the mental list of who might be calling him. Black Squadron was all here. Finn and Rey were here (in fact, Rey was heading towards them now, apparently on her way back from another obstacle course run). If it were his father, C3PO would have led with that. Any of his old navy contacts who hadn't died on Hosnian Prime had mostly found their way to the Resistance by now…

“OK, who is it?”

“He called himself 'Rocket,' sir. He refused to be any more specific and insisted you would know who he was. If fact, he was quite—”

“Rude?” said Poe.

“Indeed!”

“Yeah, I know who he is. Thanks, Threepio. It's not personal. He's rude to everyone.”

Poe replaced the open panel and grabbed his jacket.

“Wait…” He stopped in his tracks. “What codes did he use to call us?”

“I believe it is one of the communication codes we use with our suppliers, sir! I was intending to ask you with whom you had shared it.”

Poe shook his head and sighed. “He didn't get it from me, pal. But Rocket turns up all kinds of things he's not supposed to have. Might be time to start cycling in some new codes.”

He fell into step beside Rey as they both headed for the base's central complex. “Done already?” she asked curiously. “I figured that sort of repair would take all afternoon.”

“It will, but apparently not today. Threepio said a communication came through for me.”

The curious stares started as soon as they stepped through the door. Rey wasn't that much of a curiosity anymore, and Poe certainly wasn't, which meant Rocket must be in fine form today. Rey gave him a sidelong glance—she'd clearly noticed, too.

“Poe!” Finn waved from the command room and jogged towards them, flashing Rey a quick smile before getting back to the business at hand. “There's someone on the line for you, named—”

“Rocket. Yeah, Threepio told me. That's why I'm up here.” He continued his brisk stride towards the command room, running a hand restlessly through his hair. “Who did he insult besides Threepio?”

“What?”

“What did Rocket say? Threepio was in a huff; everyone's giving me weird looks, and I know Rocket—civility is not his strong suit.”

Finn hesitated. “I'm not sure he insulted anyone exactly. He's just… kind of… glowering at everyone.”

Finn wasn't wrong about the glowering. The holo showed Rocket's diminutive arms folded belligerently over his chest, his pointed face twisted into a familiar sullen scowl, and the tip of his bushy, ringed tail swishing impatiently over the ground.

Of course, most of that was just Rocket's default appearance. The gigantic blaster over his shoulder, almost as large as his entire body, was new since Poe had last seen him, however.

“Rocket! Good to see you! You still working with Groot?”

Out of the corner of his eye, he saw Finn and Rey straighten sharply, suddenly laser-focused on the conversation.

Behind Rocket, a much taller being leaned into the shot. The long wooden face split into a broad smile as he boomed out a cheerful “I am Groot!”

Force, it was good to see him again. Poe grinned up at the hologram that now towered over him to capture both of the beings on the other end.

“Beep! Bee-weeoooo!” BB-8 piped up cheerfully from by Poe's feet.

“I am Groot,” agreed Groot.

“Yeah, yeah,” groused Rocket. “Everyone's happy to see everyone. Great. Now that we've established that, can we get back to business?”

“What are you calling about? And how did you get this access code?”

Rocket loftily waved off the latter question. “Oh, you know. Sometimes you just stumble across these sorts of things.”

“Actually, no, I think there are quite a few people working to make sure you don't just 'stumble across' that code.”

“Well, maybe not just lying around, but once you're already in the right computer system…”

Poe sighed and pinched the bridge of his nose. Threepio wasn't going to be thrilled, but knowing Rocket, he could guess the rest. Apparently at least one of the Resistance's suppliers wasn't Raccoon-proofed. Probably not a huge security risk—just Rocket being dangerously skilled and a compulsive thief, as usual.

“OK. I'm assuming you weren't just calling to make sure it works.”

“No. Quill came across an interesting piece of merchandise that we thought you or your… friends” (Rocket somehow made it sound derogatory.) “might be interested in.”

Poe glanced around the command center, wondering if General Organa was around by any stroke of luck. He blinked. Every one of the unusually large number of people currently in the room was watching the conversation play out in more-or-less open fascination. You could have heard a pin drop.

He glanced back at Rocket, as his full sentence sank in. “Who's Quill?”

Rocket frowned at him, one ear cocking quizzically. Then his expression cleared. “Riiight. You haven't met the morons yet.” He turned towards someone out of sight and shouted “Quill! Poe's on the line! Where's the thing?”

“I told you it's in the aft compartment.” A human man entered the hologram. He glanced towards Poe and frowned. "It's—Wait, that's Poe?” He peered at him for a second. “Weird. I expected you to be a tree."

Rocket stared at him. "Why would he be a tree, you moron?!"

"You said Groot knew him when they were kids! I made an assumption! A wrong assumption, clearly!"
