Latest Vijay Prashad piece on the question of Israeli apartheid and violence against Palestinians by settler colonists.
Tumblr media
The question of apartheid has become more urgent in recent years as settler colonial violence against native Palestinians has increased dramatically.
The newest Far-Right Nationalist Israeli Government, even when they believe the actions of settlers hurts their own cause, refuses to take action against them, essentially providing cover for their violent actions by providing IDF Forces to prevent retaliation against these violent settlers and their crimes against the Palestinian people.

The Israeli Nationalist Govt just loves using these euphemisms for genocide: "Price-tag" attacks to exact a price on Palestinians for existing in their own home, or the "mowing the lawn" for the nearly annual short wars in Gaza when IDF Forces go on the attack against "Palestinian Resistance Groups" in civilian neighborhoods.

And then there are the political prisoners, Palestinians who give voice to the desperation and longing for freedom their people suffer through, or groups that defend Palestinian civilians from settler and IDF violence.

In reaction to Israeli Apartheid Government's refusal to release Walid Daqqah, the International Union of Left Publishers (IULP) has released a statement calling on the Apartheid Government to release Daqqah immediately:

ON VIOLENCE
(A found poem inspired by Vijay Prashad and Frantz Fanon)
A civilization
that tolerates high
levels of
hunger
among its people
is a violent
civilization.
A civilization
that tolerates high
levels of
unemployment
among its people
is a violent
civilization.
A civilization
that needs a police
force to stop
hungry people
from getting food
is a violent
civilization.
The violence comes
prior to looting.
Colonialism
was looting.
Capitalism
is looting.
How is it possible
that rich countries
have such high
levels of
hunger
when there is food
all around?
If you don’t have money,
you can’t have food.
That is an act of violence.
It is a violence
against humanity.

Vijay Prashad - Israel-Palestine and the Context Missing in the Media
In this episode of The Source, we interview historian, journalist and author Vijay Prashad about the latest developments surrounding the Israeli war in Gaza. We begin the interview with a look at the background to the Hamas terror attacks on October 7th. We then look at the 8000 Palestinians in Israeli captivity, including hundreds if not thousands of children, who are now being released as part of the ceasefire agreement with Hamas, and on what basis Israel held them in the first place. We examine the actions of regional actors such as Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Hezbollah and others, and end the interview by asking why the West sanctioned Russia when it annexed Ukrainian territory, but does not do the same with Israel, which has continuously annexed Palestinian territory for over 75 years.

In Venezuela 70% at least of the media is in private hands and secretly held — so it’s not publicly declared who the owners are. In Venezuela only 5% of the media is government. So now it’s interesting... Let’s say the government is conducting policies which the elite don’t like. It’s very likely the elite will mobilise the media as the opposition against those policies. [...] If that is the case, the government’s response is “the media is our enemy.” Now, this is delicious for the imperialist media, because now they will say, “Look, these countries are censoring journalists.” The context which vanishes is that the media in these societies are not actually free and fair. These are media’s of the ruling class, which do not want to abdicate their power and property to the new governments that have emerged.

Ever since the Haitian Revolution won independence from France in 1804, Haiti has faced successive waves of invasions, including a two-decade-long US occupation from 1915 to 1934, a US-backed dictatorship from 1957 to 1986, two Western-backed coups against the progressive former President Jean-Bertrand Aristide in 1991 and 2004, and a UN military intervention from 2004 to 2017. These invasions have prevented Haiti from securing its sovereignty and have prevented its people from building dignified lives. Another invasion, whether by US and Canadian troops or by UN peacekeeping forces, will only deepen the crisis.

i don't think western leftists know or even care but vijay prashad is actually persona non grata on large parts of the indian left for being a party mouthpiece for the cpm. the party that fought and killed agricultural workers, farmers and activists for refusing to be displaced from their land to build a car factory for india's oldest capitalists - the tatas in singur. good place to start. he also lives in the west. assigning him authority to talk about a whole country is very dangerous.
tw: rape, political violence, murder under the cut
tapasi malik was an 18 year old woman who was raped and murdered by cpm cadre in singur. vijay prashad pointed to his own party newspaper as proof she was murdered by her father while the high court successfully convicted cpm people for the crime

Simon Pirani: No Path to Peace in Ukraine Through This Fantasy World
The Russian army’s meagre successes in Ukraine – such as taking the ruined town of Avdiivka, at horrendous human cost – have produced a new round of western politicians’ statements and commentators’ articles about possible peace negotiations. Hopes are not high, because the Kremlin shows no appetite for such talks. Its actions, such as nightly bombing of civilians and civilian infrastructure,…

In recent weeks, the streets of Haiti have once again been occupied by large marches and roadblocks, with the mood on edge. Banks and nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) — including Catholic charities — faced the wrath of the protesters, who painted “Down with [the] USA” on buildings that they ransacked and burned. The Creole word dechoukaj or uprooting—that was first used in the democracy movements in 1986 — has come to define these protests.
