Waxploitation - “Perverting Da Chords Of Justice (Idjut Boys mix)” Tummy Re-Touch 1998 House
From Discogs:
Waxploitation were an electronic three-piece outfit who were part of the move to bridge the gap between dance music, electronica and live instrumentation. Sampled breaks, programming and acidic touches were weaved into a live fender rhodes and hammond driven experience. Ably pinned down by the fantastic bass and keyboard playing of Simon Paterson with Tom Bailey providing the driving Rhodes and Organ input. Bob Sadler was the back-room engineer who often was let loose on the squelchy vintage analogue keyboards.
Waxploitation's vibe was a pretty unique one, as they fused together retro-futurist keyboard work with a tribalistically summery, breakbeat-infused beach-house sound. Might seem like a jumbled mess from the way I'm describing it, and there's no doubt that it kind of was, but out of Waxploitation's freewheeled mashing of disparate sounds came a hypnotic, unconventional kind of beauty.
Take for instance, this remix by London's Idjut Boys, a pair of producer-DJs who basically turned out a product that sounded like Waxploitation anyway. In '97, their remix of "Perverting Da Chords of Justice" actually kicked off a Waxploitation 12-inch and Waxploitation's original version of the song featured on the b-side instead.
But I don't think this version is from that 12-inch; I think this is an exclusive re-edit that's only on the Tummy Touch label's Tummy Re-Touch compilation. And true to form, this remix is eccentric. It features a lot of the things that have been outlined above—the crazy keyboards, the breakbeats, the summer beach-house vibe, the tribalism, the hypnotism—but what's more is that they even took a little piece from drum n bass, too, namely, the Reese bass: that sinister, eerie, subterranean, purring bass sound. Initially, it features prominently in the first half as the main piece of a track that starts out as what seems like dark and listless monotony, but when this song emerges out of those unlit depths and decides to go for a tan, that bass, as malevolent as it is, actually serves as a nice, little bit of a funky contrast to all the fun cheeriness that suddenly surrounds it.
Allow this one to work itself into a lather before you judge. Really cool, one-of-a-kind house track here with a lot of moving parts that typically don't get smushed together. Great stuff.

Daptone Records is releasing an album of cover songs from Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings called Just Dropped In (To See What Condition My Rendition Was In). The collection will have five never-heard-before covers and fan favorites previously released in different formats. Their version of Stevie Wonder's "Signed Sealed Delivered I'm Yours" is the lead single which was originally commissioned by a bank for a TV commercial.
"Rescue Me" and "In The Bush" were outtakes from The Wolf Of Wall Street soundtrack. “Little by Little,” “Inspiration Information,” “Here I Am Baby,” and “Take Me with U” were intended for tribute projects to Dusty Springfield, Shuggie Otis, The Marvelettes, and Prince. The band's cover of Gladys Knight's "Giving Up" was requested by a producer who had plans to sample the beat for a Dr. Dre album. “Just Dropped In (To See What Condition My Condition Was In)” took inspiration from both the Kenny Rogers and Bettye Lavette versions. Legendary Public Enemy producer Hank Shocklee requested their reworking of Bad Medicine's "Trespasser" for the American Gangster soundtrack.
Through the years the group recorded some covers simply because they wanted to including Janet Jackson's "What Have You Done For Me Lately" and Bob Marley's "It Hurts To Be Alone." The Jackson song appeared on their 2001 debut album Dap-Dippin' With Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings. The Marley cover is from the 2009 Waxploitation Presents Causes 2 compilation.
Just Dropped In (To See What Condition My Rendition Was In) is the group's second posthumous release following Soul Of A Woman from 2017. Jones passed in 2016 from pancreatic cancer. The new album comes out on October 23rd.

Influential records in my life #34.
Bought this one back in the late 90s at Amoeba Berkeley on a random road trip before I moved to the Bay Area a few years later. I knew Charizma and Peanut Butter Wolf from the first Stones Throw 12” so of course I copped it. I had to buy blind back then. Not many sound samples available for independent music. The internet wasn’t that huge, not many people around me were into super Indy music etc. It was through Step On Our Egos that I heard some of my favorite rappers for the first time. Namely Encore, 50 Grand from Homeliss Derelex and MC Dopestyle. The whole record is a banger but off top my favorite song was Rappers Delight Deluxe by Dopestyle. At the time I was programming a radio show with my co host Joey Fongul on a micro power station operated out of the back of The Arte Americas building called Free Radio Fresno. The building used to be a Bank Of America and we were broadcasting out of the vault. Super underground right? Haha. The only problem besides poor signal was that the record had a pressing defect and skipped all the way through the Dopestyle song. I tried everything. I must’ve put $5 worth of change on the needle but could never get it to play through. I eventually just played it with the skips. Years later I’m working at Amoeba Records in SF and this super cool guy comes in, we talk hip hop for a while, guy knew everything. Later my friend and record mentor Big Ant (RIP) told me that was his old friend Dopestyle. No way. Not long after we were formerly introduced and Dopestyle invited me to join his group Dopestyle 1231 as their official DJ to help promote their newly released LP on the Waxploitation label through Kut Masta Kurt. Over the next few years I’d have the honor of producing, mixing and laying cuts for numerous Dopestyle projects. He’s a unique talent and one of the most genuine people I’ve ever had the privilege to be friends with. I also eventually discovered that if you played Rapper Delight Deluxe backwards it didn’t skip. So I rigged my turntable to play backwards like I had seen on the back of DJ Vadim’s Heads Ain’t Ready 12” back in the day, recorded it into my Dell tower, flipped it backwards... the rest is history.
Many of the projects I released with MC Dopestyle are available to stream and download at www.dj4am.bandcamp.com

Tha Alkaholiks, also known as Tha Liks, is an American hip hop trio from Los Angeles, California, United States.(1) Since the early 1990s they have produced party music with a hardcore hip hop edge, powered by the beats of DJ and producer E-Swift (born Eric Brooks in Columbus, Georgia, raised in Toledo, Ohio) and the rhymes of J-Ro (born James Robinson in Los Angeles) and Tash (born Rico Smith in Cincinnati).(1) Though commercial crossover success largely eluded the group, they maintained a dedicated following on their native West Coast, throughout the United States and worldwide. Tha Alkaholiks were also featured with their own song 'Daaam!' featuring Finger Eleven on Loud Rocks.

Ten years ago, Jeff Antebi, the founder of the record company Waxploitation, asked musicians and contemporary painters to collaborate on a collection of children’s stories for grown-ups.
Today, you can find the fruits of their labor collected in a new, 350-page book project called Stories for Ways & Means. The book features tales by Tom Waits (above), Nick Cave, Bon Iver, The Pixies’ Frank Black and other artists. (Note: the stories contain “outre art, weird images, graphic displays of nasty stuff and cuss words.”)
Also, you can now watch a series of short promo films where celebs like Danny Devito, Zach Galifianakis and Nick Offerman read items in the collection.
Daily inspiration. Discover more photos at http://justforbooks.tumblr.com
