So, I've been in crucial need for another writing excercise to get my creative juices flowing. And, a few days ago, I thought to myself "why not just create a segment of some of your favorite nonsense that you learn all the time?"
Thanks to that thought, I've decided to share with you all some non-nonsense about the most interesting women from the 18th century and beyond. Or should I say before?
I'll call it Historical Ladies of Absolute Awesomeness! It's a working title.
And to start HLAA off, I'll tell you a little about Joan of Arc.
Jeanne d'Arc (Joan of Arc, en anglais) was born sometime around 1412, in a small village called Domrémy-la-Pucelle, in France. She was never taught how to read or write, but her mother, Isabelle Romée, was the catalyst of a catalyst, as she was the one who established Joan's piety within Catholicism.
The Hundred Years War was prevalent throughout Joan's entire life, even before she was born. Her people were in pain, and she knew that it was the English that harmed them. But it wasn't until she began to hear voices (sent by God, as she perceived), that she determined it was her destiny to free France from the clutches of their oppressors.
The first records of her quest began after she vowed abstinence and convince a local court that she should not be forced to marry at her father's demand. Couldn't let no man get in the way of her holy pursuit of liberty. And she kept to that notion, even when the magistrate of stronghold Vaucouleurs denied her to speak with the French crown prince Charles VII. She then cropped her hair and returned to the magistrate disguised as a man and succeeded. (sound like someone you may know?)
Since then, our homegirl Joan accomplished many victories, the most notable one being the liberation of Orléans.
After promising Prince Charles that she would see him crowned king, which she later accomplished in July 1429, Joan was given an entire army of soldiers to fend of the siege of Orleans, also in 1429. Dressed in all white armor and riding a white horse, our heroine fought and won in style. And, if that's not impressive enough for you, she was only 17 years old!
Alas, not all great things end on a high note. In 1430, after failing to defend the town of Compiégne, Joan was defeated and captured by her enemies. The English tried Joan for about 70 crimes, including witchcraft(typical, in that era), heresy and dressing like a man. And, if you think King Charles VII came to her aid, sadly, you're incorrect.
After being held captive for a year and being under constant threat of death, Joan finally confessed to her "crimes". She was even forced to deny ever receiving divine guidance. And perhaps they would've let her live after that; because it wasn't until several days later, when she defied orders (again) by donning men's clothing, that they pronounced her death sentence. That's right, Joan! la liberté ou la mort!
On May 30, 1431, at the age of 19, Joan was burned at the stake. But death only solidified her mark in history. Not only did she die a martyr, but in 1920, Pope Benedict XV himself canonized her as the Saint of Orléans. A statue of Joan also made its home in the Notre Dame cathedral, paying tribute to her the legacy as a heroine of France.

Frida Kahlo 1907-1954 Frida is a Mexican Artist, feminist, and bisexual woman. As a young woman she suffered from polio and a devastating bus crash. Her pain influenced her art, most of her self portraits macabre in nature. Many people considered her a surrealist, Frida rejecting the genre for her work, claiming the art as her view in reality. Frida was born into the Mexican revolution, often claiming her birth was the year of the revolution (1910) to associate herself with it. Much of her art was inspired by Mexican artifacts and culture, her and her husband both collecting jewelry and artifacts. More of her art tangled with her and her husbands (Diego Rivera, a fellow artist) tumultuous relationship, and their multiple affairs. Such as her piece “Two Fridas” which she created after her divorce with Diego in 1939, showing the woman he fell in love with, and the woman she was. But, they remarried only a year later. The two lived separately, Frida living in Coyocan Mexico, and Diego in New York. This separation caused them to often find other people to be with, Frida having romantic connections with Leon Trotskey, Gerogia O'Keeffe, and many, many others. Frida only had a few solo exhibitions of her art, but by the time of her death her art was renowned in the western hemisphere, Frida creating around 143 paintings, 55 being self portraits.
I myself love Frida and her paintings. Especially as someone who deals with almost constant pain, I find that the idea of a woman that dealt with her pain through art very inspiring, and it spurs me on to do things I feel I might not be able to do.

Happy Friday! Hope you get a little time to relax and shake it out. . This is Margaret Cho, stand up comedian and actor. I imagined her as she might've been as a kid. Through her willingness to address topics of loneliness, belonging, race and gender issues, she is a powerful force for good. She is the newest illustration in the Women Who Made History calendar, featured for the month of December. Up next for #matriarchymarch is the Chinese Warrior, Wang Cong'er. She started out as a preformer skilled in martial arts and acrobatics. Wang would eventually join and become a leader of the White Lotus Society (a rebel group opposing the Qing Dynasty). Her mastery of both the physical and mental demands of King Fu was extremely rare for a woman to take up at the time, and earned her a lot of respect among her peers. Her husband was a government official, and secret member of the WLS, who was killed alongside many other members after plans to launch an attack against the government were leaked by a spy. Wang was suicidal with grief, spent time in a monastary, and eventually returned to lead the WLS to both honor and avenge her husband. Wang was much loved among the WLS. She was a brilliant commander who excelled at guerilla warfare, and would lead her troops from the front. However, Wang wasn't infallible, and after being ambushed by the Qing army and suffering severe loss, she was faced with deciding between dishonor in capture, or death. It's said she chose death, jumping from a cliff with the WLS banner in her hands, followed by her companions. She was 22. Despite the failure of the rebellion, Wand is remembered for her heroics, resourcefulness, and courage. Her legend would live on and inspire future rebellions, eventually leading to the end of the empire. It's debated whether or not the story of Mulan was based in part on the life of Wang Cong'er. #marchofthematriarchs #matriarchy #badasswomen #femmefatal #femalewarrior #mightygirl #girlsempowergirls #herstory #womenofhistory #womenshistory #womenshistorymonth #portrait #rebel #womenpaintingwomen #womenempoweringwomen https://www.instagram.com/p/BukicZhFIcg/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=17te9iyzull5p

Born in Manila - Philippines - Anita Magsaysay-Ho (1914-2012) was a pioneering artist best known for her representation of the Filipino women. She studied at the School of Fine Arts and was the only female artist to be part of the Thirteen Moderns - A group of emerging Filipino artists who broke away from the classical conventions of the art scene in the Philippines in the 50’s. Magsaysay-Ho’s painting style evolved over time. From bold brushwork and contrasting dark and light tones in the 50’s to softer and graceful lines during the 60’s that almost looked choreographed. In the 70’s she explored a new style influenced by Chinese calligraphy using inkblots, followed by a "Green Period” in the 80’s. Anita Magsaysay-Ho and her family moved several times. They lived in China, Brazil, Canada and Japan. Despite living in such different places she kept drawing Filipino women, celebrating femininity and its empowerment. Sainte Jeanne d'Arc. 🗡🗡🗡🗡🗡🗡🗡 #joanofarc #jeannedarc #medium #medieval #altar #trusttheuniverse #selfconfidence #womenofhistory #womenempowerment #witch #witchcraft #clairaudience #faith #france #frenchhistory #histoiredefrance (à Marseille, France) https://www.instagram.com/p/BsSeWRFgVOj/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=2qphr1kskxpj

She survived polio, forced sterilization, the loss of her daughter due to medical refusal over politics, and multiple threats on her life, yet despite her disability and having never had the privilege of a complete education she continued to fight for equality in Mississippi. So who is this woman? Fanny Lou Hamer. Learn her name, read her story. She deserves a place in the books, and I feel it's time we recognize the amazing work she did for black rights and women's rights. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fannie_Lou_Hamer #fannielouhamer #womenempoweringwomen #womensrights #Eugenics #civilrights #humanrights #WomenOfCourage #womenofhistory #voterrights https://www.instagram.com/p/CbJf7KrMqLs/?utm_medium=tumblr
