The first part of the exam is a joke.

Sort of literally, because thanks to Naruto the Konoha Twelve all know the real purpose of the test, but also because Sasuke is able to answer all of these questions without even cheating. He knows Naruto can too, and the only reason Sakura even passed is that her theoretical knowledge is so advanced that it carried her past her mediocre ninjutsu and truly abysmal taijutsu, so this is a walk in the park for her.

Hinata, Neji, and Shikamaru are able to answer on their own as well and everyone else had already decided on their cheating strategy beforehand. The answers might not really matter, but they have to keep up appearances here.

When they get to the Forest of Death, Naruto leads them up to the trees, then says, “I’d ask if you were followed, but I figure you’d find that insulting.”

Sasuke has no idea what she’s talking about until the air next to her shimmers and then Itachi is sitting there. “You insult me all the time.”

“Aniki?” he asks incredulously, then glares at Naruto. “I hate when you don’t tell me the whole plan.”

Sakura pats him on the shoulder sympathetically.

She shrugs. “He’s just backup. Just in case. Remember-”

“Keep an eye on Gaara, don’t let him kill any Konoha shinobi, and if he looks like he’s loosing control or if I need backup, send a clone,” Itachi says. “Are you going to tell me why you’re so worried about Gaara in particular? He’s got a high death count, but that’s not exactly unusual.”

At least she hasn’t told Itachi everything either.

“You can trust him,” Sasuke says, even though Naruto knows that, even though he wouldn’t be here if she did it.

Even with those she trusts, it’s hard for her to lay all her card on the table, to trust them with everything. In a lot of ways, she trusts her parents. But she doesn’t tell them – well, most things.

Naruto looks away guiltily, then gives a short nod, but doesn’t say anything.

Sasuke sighs. “He’s like Naruto.”

Itachi is a genius. He understands what he’s saying immediately and his eyes widen. “That’s not in his file.”

If Itachi doesn’t know, then Minato probably doesn’t either. He would have told his Anbu. Sasuke knows that Naruto had worried that he’d hid it from her deliberately.

“I could be wrong,” Naruto says, even though she’s not, even though she wouldn’t be this worried and going to this much effort if she doubted herself at all. “He’s not exactly like me though.”

“His seal,” Itachi says. “It doesn’t keep them completely separate like yours does?”

Sasuke keeps his expression relaxed from years of practice.

“Right,” she says. “So don’t try and fight him head on, okay? We’ll help you.”

Itachi presses his lips together then nods, disappearing in a swirl of leaves.

“Come on,” Sakura says, “the sooner everyone else collects a scroll, the sooner we can get to the tower ourselves.”

Naruto nods, forming the Ram and a half dozen copies of his best friend pop into existence.

Meeting up with everyone would draw too much attention to themselves and splitting up to keep an eye on the teams is asking for trouble. Luckily, Naruto’s shadow clones are able to bridge that gap.

Not that she’s supposed to know how to do those, but Sasuke has lost count of the number of Naruto’s secrets he’s keeping.

Lost opportunities and the fact that we never got an alternative universe where Sasuke was friends with Shino and Neji.

Oh, who would know how it feels for a brother to sacrifice himself in place of his sibling, in a way that no one else would know what he did but it'd cause the sibling to suffer for what he brother did and what was done to him?

Shino had an older brother who went to Root so they wouldn't take Shino. Sasuke had Itachi, who killed his family BECAUSE OF DANZO TOO and sold himself as a traitor so Sasuke could live. Neji might not have a sibling, but that's the story of how his dad died in place of his twin brother, all because the youngest one must be the slave of the oldest one.

I know that in some other world they ended up in Anbu together. They all are so misunderstood and portrayed as cold, when in fact they love and care for their teammates so much they'd not doubt to kill anyone who threatened them.

The byakugan, the sharingan and the Aburame's bugs in one team? That'd be so cool. I think you only need to add Sai and the team of "fucked up siblings history" is complete.

I was thinking about how the girls in Naruto might have progressed as ninja if they'd ever been given actual development.

Ino would make an excellent spy. She's mental ninjutsu oriented, and she's people oriented. She's the gossip queen, she knows everything about anyone. I can so easily see her as an espionage master going under deep cover to do what she does best, knowing other people's business. Super glam spy fits her vibes, she deserves it. The anime suggests an alternate path as she has a filler arc where she apprentices under Tsunade and that's as a mental health specialist. This doesn't fit her quite as well but I do like the idea of her and Sakura working together given how important their rivalry is to each other in the manga.

Sakura was introduced as having excellent potential in genjustsu, and then nothing was done with this. Sasuke became the genjutsu user and Sakura the taijutsu user and this could have been interesting since this is the opposite of their initial introduction but again nothing was done with this. Building off her taijutsu and being able to focus her chakra to a point for super powered attacks, I think Sakura deserves to wield a giant axe, she has one in several of Kishimoto's illustrations. Next would be her to develop her genjutsu potential, Sakura's strength's are her control and intelligence and I'd like to see her fully use those skills. Additionally the manga and characters themselves draw strong parallels between Sasuke and Kakashi as the geniuses of their teams. The parallel that is missed is that Sakura and Kakashi are both people without plot-breakingly powerful kekkai genkai with high intelligence, excellent chakra control, but mediocre chakra pools, and this really could have been explored more. One of the problems Naruto has is that healer is treated as a women's profession, with Sakura its rather hard to avoid however as the manga sets up a strong parallel between the sannin trio and Team 7. One option would be for Sakura not to use her medical knowledge for healing but instead like Kabuto for assassination and special operations. Of Team 7 Sakura is the most suited for ANBU, Naruto is just out of consideration completely and Sasuke has shown himself to be just as stupid and reckless as Naruto. Sakura in Anbu would also further drive the similarities between her and Kakashi.

When will someone remember that Tenten exists. I don't see her 700 epilogue retirement to run a weapon shop necessarily bad. Not everyone has to be a ninja, the problem is when it's always the women who retire from fighting. As a ninja though I think Tenten deserves more swords, like Killer B level or more swords. Tenten's strengths are in her physical abilities and weapon versatility, so she should be able to always pull out the weapon type that would work best against any opponent. I love to see her be a primarily physical fighter this would be my first pick for her, but another option would be to lean more into the sealing scroll side of thing so not just weapons but tools and traps, make Tenten a saboteur.

Hinata, oh Hinata, she deserves so much better. I can see more or less two paths for her. First would be to quit being a ninja, it could work for her. Hinata never really seemed to want to be a ninja, it was always for something else, her clan, Naruto, her friends, but not quite herself. I can very easily her leaving the shinobi life all together, leave ninjas, leave the Hyuuga clan; Hinata deserves it, to lead her own life on her own terms. Hinata had such potential to be an interesting character and its a shame the manga never got into it. She's the eldest of the Hyuuga clan leader but she's overshadowed by both her cousin and her younger sister and ends up passed over for succession, like that is juicy. True growth for the Hyuuga would have been Neji succeeding his uncle as clan head but that's another post. If she stays a ninja I would have like to see come to terms that her clan's kinda bullshit in a lot of ways and what they think of her doesn't matter, becoming a shinobi because she wants that for herself. In line with this personal growth she fighting style should deviate from Hyuuga techniques, maybe she develops her own taijutsu style. Or who knows maybe she becomes a physical therapist between the ability to see chakra and affect it, magic acupuncture. Kurenai is similarly ignored in the manga, but with her mentorship, Hinata has the potential to become essentially a magekiller, specializing in countering and taking down genjutsu users.

I bring up the option of some of the girls retiring because some of the boys should have retired. Hinata should have gotten Choji's character arc, and Choji who hates fighting should have been allowed to quit fighting and run a successful bakery cafe business. Sai deserves to put shinobi life behind him and become a full time artist. Shikamaru starts out like he's going to quit but I'm actually quite fond of his character arc. Yamato is also wasted potential as former human experiment and child soldier, like Sai he should learn how to live in peace, maybe he becomes an architect. We don't see team Taka in chapter 700 but Juugo is so gentle I want a nice civilian life for him.

(idk about Temari I mostly just want her to keep girlbossing and beating people up. Mmm I do think she's make a better Kazekage than Gaara. Gaara is another one I could see quiting being a soldier.)

Gods, she looked beautiful. All in white and soft florals - you couldn’t believe it really, little Hinata who would faint every time Naruto so much as looked at her would now standing beside him as his wife. He scrubbed up well, Naruto, you had gone with him and Iruka to get his wedding outfit fitted and insisted he get his hair cut for the day too. You’d never be his mother, just as Iruka would never be his father. But you two had tried, you had been the one to feed the screeching blonde baby his 3am bottles in between ANBU missions and eventually had taught alongside Iruka in the Academy. Seeing him now, with the sweet girl who’d bring you lilacs every day as a gift with a shy nod, having said their vows and exchanged rings, you had never been more thankful for sacrifices made along the way.

You also felt old. Even though you were only 27.

The reception began in earnest, guests greeting the beaming couple and Iruka standing beside Hinata’s father thanking passers by.

Having taught all of the kids in the academy, being close to Naruto and soon becoming Lady Fifth’s right hand woman beside Shizune - these kids felt just like yours. You’d mopped up their blood, dried their tears as anyone would for their kids.

You had spent so much time with them, made them take their medicine, trained with them, studied with them, mediated petty arguments (Ino and Sakura) and mended broken hearts with them. Of course, there was also the other reason.

The 6ft, silver haired reason standing in the corner. Your best friend since childhood, your Shinobi partner, your partner in crime and the love of your life.

Not that the last part came to light until about 3 months ago, when before the final battle arrived you woke up realising you might die tomorrow. He might die tomorrow. Life was too short, you’d lost too many people to forsake this chance - even though his fear of losing people he loved, and your fear of losing your other half was what kept that unspoken gap between you all these years. How you came to get together after almost 25 years of pining was a story for another day, however, because today was Hinata and Naruto’s day.

You could see Sakura, in the distance - she’d intercepted a messenger bird and pulled the scroll from its foot, and you saw her smile. Only one person can make your Sakura smile like that. Sasuke. On his journey of atonement, who knows where - but still thinking of Naruto, and Sakura. His friends. His family.

Sai stood hand in hand with Ino, a genuine smile on his face and love in both their eyes. A blushing, wait, blushing Temari stood beside Shikamaru - when did that happen? You all knew it was coming, but didn’t know it had happened. Tsunade caught your eye and winked, raising a glass of champagne in your direction. Shino and Kiba were monitoring Rock Lee and Gai who were causing mild havoc and Choji was at the Hor D’Ouvres already. TenTen stood near Kurenai and Mirai. So many loved ones, but too many missing. Neji should be here for this. Jiraiya would be so proud.

You watch the Kazekage make conversation with Kakashi who looks absolutely miserable among so many people, and you decide to save him. You grab Sai as you walk towards the Hokage and Gaara of the Desert.

“Lord Kazekage, thank you again so much for attending today. It means very much to Naruto to have you here with him today. Hinata too, although I suppose I can just call them the Uzumaki’s now! I believe you were speaking about a memorial portrait for your office, Lord Kazakage? Sai here is our finest artist, perhaps you could speak on the matter?” You interject, with levels of diplomacy you only gathered watching Tsunade daily.

“Indeed, I’m grateful to be here to witness a dear friend’s happy day. Sai, would you speak with me about…” Gaara speaks, wandering away with Sai beside him. An odd pair, one you knew would be busy making incredibly strange conversation for some time.

You glance at Kakashi, a wry smile on your face.

“Better?” You snicker, taking your place beside him.

“Infinitely. The second Naruto can string a sentence together without saying ‘Believe it!’ I’m giving him the hat. I hate all this talking.” He grumbles.

“Even to me?” You act offended.

He just gives you that adorable eye smile, lips quirking under his mask.

“Never to you.” He says, voice quieter, softer.

“You really do look very handsome today, Lord Sixth.” You smile, fixing the lapels of his jacket. He rolls his eyes.

“Not even half worthy of standing beside you, sweetheart. Y’look beautiful today, everyday but today - that’s something else.” He smirks.

“Oh hush you, you told me how nice I looked for 15 minutes this morning.” You huff.

“I believe I showed you how nice I thought you looked too, 3 times before we left the apartment.” He snickered, knowing the images of your tangled limbs in the bedsheets making you almost late would infiltrate your mind again, causing a flush across your cheeks.

“Kashi, gods, we were already nearly late - we can’t go sneaking off to a broom closet now and that’s how this will go if you keep talking like that.” You glance at the sky, trying to clear your mind.

You both laugh at the scene in front of you as Gai and Rock begin doing various exercises and TenTen just rolls her eyes. Everyone looks so beautiful, so happy. The aura of calm and peace surrounding everyone is a reminder of why you came back from the war with many new scars. It was worth it. Seeing these kids, who really deserved a better world - actually living it was more than any of you dreamed.

“Did you see Shikamaru and Temari hooked up?” You elbow your boyfriend.

“Finally. I thought his lazy ass would never do anything about it.” He snorted.

“Bets on it was all Temari.” You respond and he shakes your hand to seal the deal.

“Sakura got a message from Sasuke too.” He chimes in.

“Sai asked me to help pick a ring for Ino too.” You remember shopping with him, in awe of how much of a romantic this boy turned out to be.

There’s silence for a moment between you both.

“Who do you think will be next?” Kakashi asks you.

“For what?”

“To get married.”

“Temari and Shikamaru probably. Ino will want to plan a wedding properly, and I think we’re still a while off Sakura and Sasuke. Who knows, maybe Gai will find his partner in the grand spirit of youth?” You respond.

He huffs a laugh, but doesn’t reply.

“Why, was that not who you thought?” You question him.

“Nah.” He shrugs.

“Who do you think will get married next then?” You poke his cheek.

“Us.” He looks at you, unfazed.

You blink.

And blink again.

He just stares at you.

“Is that a proposal, Lord Sixth?” You think he’s joking, so you play along.

“I suppose so.” He nods.

Oh my god, he’s being serious.

“Kashi - are you - do you mean that?” You ask, breathless and grasp his hand.

“You used to say you didn’t want a fancy proposal. Just for someone to say they want to marry you. I want to marry you. The rings at home.” His smile is soft, imperceptible to anyone but you.

You turn to face him, smile bright and lash line glistening with tears.

“You busy tomorrow, Hatake?” You ask, a laugh interrupting.

“Shikamaru can take care of business, you got plans?”

“Wanna get married?”

He just smiles, and glances around to make sure nobodies watching before slipping his mask down and pressing a kiss to the corner of your lips.

“It’s a date.” His voice is wavering slightly.

“Let’s keep it quiet. It’s not our day. Hinata and Naruto leave for their honeymoon tonight.” You whisper to him.

“Tomorrow we’ll ask Gai and Kurenai to meet us at the courthouse. It can be just us four. Then I’ll take Mrs. Hatake home.” He nods, and your heart seizes at the sound of you being Mrs. Hatake within 24 hours.

“I love you, ‘Kashi.”

“I love you too, sweetheart.” He says, pressing a masked kiss to your inner wrist.

“SAKURAAAAA-CHAN! LOOK AT KAKASHI-SENSEI AND Y/N-SENSEI! THEY ARE SO CUTE!” Ino’s voice echoes.

“Some things never change.” You laugh as Kakashi grimaces.

I find it fascinating how gaara was straight up just allowed to kill people in the chunin exams with no consequences for it or it really being mentioned beyond team 8 having flashbacks to it. Wouldn't you think an exam that is fostering future chunins would have more precautions or security ?? i know after the third war they implicated an age limit but they didn't seem to do much else as murders were still happening DURING the exams.

Also, how neji was just allowed to cast out violent threats and declare that he was going to end up killing naruto. I know with the hinata fight he was stopped but the fact he was even allowed to go as far as initiating the attack is insane. I just find it interesting that despite how much konoha praise kishimoto implements into the manga there's still so many flaws to it, especially surrounding their examinations that included traumatised child soldiers. You'd think that they would have more than one examiner during these sections and maybe some anbu soldiers patrolling the area to ensure nobody broke any rules. But, the most they had was during a written test so nobody would 'cheat' and not the one that involved a forest known for death.

Anyways i think neji and gaara should of destroyed konoha with their combined murderous intent

This rant will not be coherent I apologize in advance and there’s a chance this will be deleted when I wake up if I misspoke on any parts.

Sososo sick of some kakashi/ kakagai fans who don’t acknowledge Gai’s trauma or compare it to kakashis/ others in the series because they refuse to treat him as his own character and not a kakashi accessory. Gai grew up in war, he lost his parents, he was treated differently because of his skills in Jutsu, he lost countless friends in the war (kakashi was just as lost as the dead at that point and gai would never complain but it must have took so much dedication to just fight for someone who barely fought for themselves) then Neji, someone like a son to him, as well, and was finally injured to the point of having to use mobility aids for the rest of his life. Fans acting like kakashi is the only person in their dynamic who needs reassurance patience, and care, before and after loosing his leg, creates this horribly unhealthy situation in their relationship that they’ve grown past so much since their teen dynamic where Gai was the initiator in most of their interactions despite it being for the good of kakashi always. Like!! Kakashi has been far from a good friend, rival, or love interest at times but after anbu especially, he’s tried to be there for Gai in the ways he can let himself at first, but also in ways that push boundaries for him thatd he’d never even approach for others. From that, another critique in the context of their relationship is a lot of times kakashi is made into this always uncaring character to Gais endless love and affection. Like?? No?? Yes, Kakashi was extremely depressed and traumatized and closed off for years, the mere notion of putting a name to their relationship a step pushing his boundaries too far, but that didn’t mean he never cared about Gai. Through out the show Kakashi showed his feelings in actions, comfortability, and trust he has with no one else, the trust and connection and allowance to open himself to Gai and allow vulnerability growing even more after Kakashi can finally allow himself to name their relationship. The naming being so special because him and Gai have finally gotten to this point of healing where their affections and actions for each other can overlap. This is so so important to kakashi’s relationship with his (and Gais relationship with kakashis) trauma and healing as well as their relationship but a lot of fans see it as less just because it’s not Gai’s more physical and verbal expression of affection. They love each other!! They’ve both struggled!! Together and apart!! Love takes time and energy and the ability to be your own individual person while looking out for the well-being of someone else!! I love the idea of their domesticity and ability to exist in peace as much as anyone else but some fans need to stop acting like their relationship isn’t consensual, loving, and patient both ways

Neji -

When the door to the hokage's office opened, Naruto didn't expect to see Neji standing there, his toddler clutching his hand.

"Neji!" Naruto said brightly. "What can I do for you today? Shikamaru and I just finished our meeting."

"That's great," Neji said with a smile that didn't look particularly genuine. "If he's free then I'm sure he wouldn't mind taking my little one on a quick tour of hokage tower while we talk."

Shikamaru almost choked on his cigarette and clearly didn't want to follow through, but Naruto could hear in Neji's voice that it wasn't a request, but more of a demand, so he gestured for Shikamaru to do what Neji had asked. Shikamaru gave a long suffering sigh before putting out the cigarette and shuffling over to the pup and taking her hand, with a muttered 'come on then'.

The second the door shut, Neji rounded on him, walking right up to his desk. Naruto knew he could take Neji if it came to it, but that didn't stop him being slightly intimidated by the angry man in front of him.

"Where did you send my mate?" Neji demanded. "What kind of mission was it?"

Naruto startled, not having expected that.

"Well, er, that's classified Neji," Naruto said nervously. "You're not a shinobi anymore, I can't just-"

"I know full well what I am and what I am not," Neji hissed, slamming his hand on Naruto's desk. "They were due back three weeks ago, but they didn't return, and I've had no news. Where. did. you. send. them?"

"Neji, calm down-"

"No! I will not calm down!" Neji's voice was cold. He wasn't quite shouting, but killing intent was starting to leak into the room and Naruto could feel his ANBU guards getting antsy. "You are not the one who is having to rock your crying daughter to sleep every night because her appa is missing. You are not the one who can't even promise your daughter that her appa will be back, because you don't know!"

Naruto flinched at Neji's words. Separating work from his life was the hardest part of this job. He wanted to help Neji, to send all available people to go and find out what had happened, but... he couldn't. He had to prioritise the needs of the many.

"Tell me you sent someone to figure out why their team is late."

"Neji-"

"Don't 'Neji' me! For kami's sake, if you're worried about man power, I'll go and investigate myself! Just tell me where they went and what they were doing?"

The door swung open and Neji stopped speaking as Shikamaru and his daughter walked in.

"That's as long as you get, she's your problem, Neji, not mine," Shikamaru said dismissively, fishing out a new cigarette and lighting it. Neji growled in response but dropped the outward aggression when his pup flinched backwards.

"Sorry, darling, come here," he said, kneeling down and allowing her to toddle her way into his arms. He scooped her up and glared at both Naruto and Shikamaru over her head.

Neji leant over to Naruto one more time.

"If there isn't some information delivered to me by tomorrow morning, I'm going to find them myself," he hissed quietly. "Come one baby, why don't we go and go and buy some fruit at the market before we go home?"

"Appa come?" she asked, turning her big, innocent eyes up to Neji. Naruto could see him hesitate.

"No darling, appa's busy, just us today, okay?"

She wilted but nodded, resting her head on his shoulder.

Naruto winced at the display. He didn't like doing this, but he didn't have a choice, not as hokage.

"I'm sorry, Neji," he said, just as Neji was walking through the door.

"Save it," was the only reply he got in return.

Shino -

Shibi knew exactly who was at his door when he heard the knock. Shino had been coming over to visit him almost everyday since the three week mark since his alpha was supposed to return had passed. He would come over while his daughter was at the academy and Shibi always welcomed him with open arms. His pup would always be his, no matter how old he was.

"Shino, come in," he said as he opened the door and let his son in.

Shino nodded and shuffled into the kitchen where Shibi immediately started preparing two cups of tea. Shino looked tired and he knew he was also more stressed than he was letting on.

When the tea was ready, the two men sat in silence for almost ten minutes. Shino was uncharacteristically fidgety, but Shibi knew he had to give him space to talk on his own time.

"Oma, I-" Shino started but then stopped, looking down into his tea. He took a deep breath before continuing. "How did you manage after my appa died?"

Shibi inhaled sharply at the question.

"Did you hear any news?" Shibi asked, voice hard. He didn't want that. His son didn't need to live through the hell he had lived through, he didn't deserve that.

"No, no, nothing yet, I just- It's been a month now and no news. I can't help but think about what I'm going to do if..."

"No, stop," Shibi said, putting his hand on his son's wrist. "You don't know anything, they might be back tomorrow, there's no need to make yourself feel worse by thinking about such things. You should trust me. Why? Because I've been there before."

Shino nodded slowly, clutching his empty mug.

"I don't know what to do," Shino admitted softly after another period of silence. "What do I do, oma?"

Shibi felt his chest ache watching his son in such a state. They weren't the most touchy feely, but he felt like this situation called for a hug.

"Come here," he murmured softly, scooting his chair closer and wrapping his arm around his son. Shino accepted the embrace and leant his head on his oma's shoulder. "Do you and my granddaughter want to move in here for a while? Just temporarily."

Shino swallowed heavily, but eventually nodded against his shoulder.

"Yes, I think- I think that might make me feel better. Why? Because I would have help and not be surrounded by things that make me sad."

"Okay, then move in. I keep a bedroom for you both, you know that. You are not in this alone, Shino, no matter what happens."

"Thank you," he whispered. "Thank you, oma."

Iruka -

"So, who can tell me which country started the-" a knock at the door interrupted Iruka's lesson, the source of which quickly revealed itself to be another teacher, one who was currently managing the younger students.

"Can we talk outside for a moment please?" she said, giving nothing away.

"Of course. Class, re-read this chapter, I'll be asking questions randomly when I get back so I'll know if you've read it."

The class groaned and Iruka hid his grin as he left the classroom, closing the door behind him with a click.

"What do you need?" he asked the other teacher. He was not expecting her to say his pup's name.

"What?" Iruka asked, panic slowly seeping into him. "What's wrong with him? Did something happen?"

Iruka's son was in his first year of the academy, and Iruka sincerely hoped this was about a stupid prank and not about something serious.

"Some other students found out that your partner is still away on a mission and they..." she hesitated and Iruka knew this couldn't be going anywhere good.

"Yes?" he asked, impatient.

"They tried to convince your son that his appa was dead when I was out of the room briefly."

Iruka felt like lava was running through his veins suddenly.

"What?" he shouted, forgetting about the class behind him. The other teacher winced.

"Those students are obviously being punished," she rushed to reassure him. "But we couldn't get him to calm down, normally we would call his parents, but I thought going to grab you would be fastest."

"Take me to him," Iruka demanded, too stressed to be polite.

She led him to her office, and opened the door to reveal his pup, curled up into a ball, sobbing his little heart out. He looked up as the door opened and desperately held out his hands.

"Oma!" he wailed. Iruka wasted no time scooping him up and rocking him.

"Shh, it's okay, baby, I'm here."

"Appa's dead!" his pup cried, clawing his hands on Iruka's back.

"No, no, they're not," Iruka said firmly. "We don't know that, no one has reported anything like that."

"B-B-But they were saying that they would be back now if they were alive!"

"No, that's not true!" Iruka tried to keep his voice steady and convincing and his pup cried a large wet patch into his shirt. "Missions get delayed all the time for so many reasons! Maybe they lost some supplies, or they had to do some spying work first? There's lots and lots of reasons, so appa isn't dead, baby, I promise."

His darling pup wiped at their eyes harshly, but Iruka reached out and stopped them, grabbing a tissue off the desk in the room and using that to gently clean up his face.

"I want appa," they said miserably. "And I want to go home."

"We can go home," Iruka looked at the teacher who was still standing in the doorway with a meaningful look.

"Go," she said. "I'll find someone to cover."

"Thank you, hear that baby, we can go home, come on, I think we need some nest cuddles, what do you say?"

His pup nodded into his shoulder but resisted being put down, instead asking to be carried home.

"Appa will be home before you know it," Iruka said, ignoring the small flicker of dread curling in his own stomach. "I promise."

One thing is even if naruto acknowledged itachi's words not bearing everything alone that doesn't matter to Sasuke bc naruto is align with the system, like him also his friends they are blinded by WOF of Konoha, so they can't understand why Sasuke's revolution is important

Sasuke understands that the ninja system and missions based on usage of warfare, spying and proxy wars and WOF created autocratic blind and extreme nationalism like hokage's words are final laws who can change anything on a whim or may not reform anything from past hokage's mistakes as their blind amoral loyalist nationalism refrain them for any reform the best examples are

Hiruzen who did not reform anything for uchiha or Naruto who still teaches children endure and die for the village bc they are your family, child soldiers custom, unnecessary chunin exam ,

so for these reason sasuke can't align himself with these villages bc they have different types of ultra nationalist propaganda like WoF from Konoha, WoR from Iwa etc. where you can't choose different ways of life even if those ways of yours are harmless to the overall village population and you can't follow or advocate your ways bc corrupt and prejudiced and autocratic kage and elders will not let you go against any custom of shinobi as you just have to act and endure like a blind loyal tool without no question according to those kage and elders otherwise you will be executed or marginalized in your respective village even accept being bullied and shunned and hatred from villagers for their war trauma scapegoat like mainly kekegenkai clans and jinchurikii , you have to endure oppression from shinobi system and its shinobi and kage bc enduring for greater good and greater goals means being ninja that lies being align with the village where you can't advocate individual or certain group rights otherwise you will be targeted by corrupt and fascist and nationalist and autocratic people like Onoki, Danzo, Raikage, tobirama, Hiruzen and konoha elders and Suna elders, Kurotsuchi etc. who will do anything to maintain their respective village hegemony many examples in the whole naruto series for such these scenarios and mindsets and principle values for examples:

1.rin dying for greater of the village without relying on kakashi as she is blindly indoctrinated from the childhood even kakashi in the waves arc saying how "we" as shinobi are

2. Itachi being indoctrinated with blind nationalism of WOF which clouded his moral judgement and couldn't help him saying how segregation and confinement to one job were dangerous policy from authority and pure injustice for Uchiha and then daily bad words from villagers, even tho Uchiha also suffered so much from wars and missions and invasions

3. Sakumo hatake's suicide, amegakure and small villages being pillaged, naruto being shunned, jinchuriki practice, zabusa and haku's yuki caln genocide, uchiha clan genocide, iatchi and shisui immoral spying on their own people, neji's father death, hyuga slavery and curse, Madara being ostracized by tobirama from being hokage bc of sharaingan power without given any chance and proof for at least as beginner, child soldiers practice, immoral anbu spying practice, supressing your emotions for missions, glorifying your ancestors as Gods and WOF like propaganda without knowing their bad sides and betraying or opposing and leaving village means death, hokage's words and judgement are constitution no one can oppose, covering uo genocide, grooming and indoctrinated child soldiers in exteme belief of WoF propaganda like itachi, shikimaru, rin, naruto etc. and so on

Sasuke knew most of the people live in this shinobi framework which destined to bring disaster and inhuman and injustice to certain groups of people and individuals and disagreeing to opposition and different views where change and reform can't be possible in the long run as they all are in village circle blinded by this propaganda and shinobi system which is casuing child soldiers practice, jinchuriki practice, various tragedy, bullying, mass killing, genocide, systematic and direct oppression, cycle of hatred among clans, individuals and villages in the shinobi frame work, for the sole reason why Sasuke have to be alone for his revolution bc whole shinobi worlds are blinded by shinobi customs and propaganda in shinobi framework or shinobi system

So to cure the darkness that shinobi system created without time to time reform or fact checking, Sasuke have to be alone bc everyone is blinded by the system and stupid enduring meaning of the shinobi, so revolution is important no bloody it is bc people alrady died bc of this blind nationalist system that created only violence after violence down the line, either you maintain and judge it with impartial executioner like Sasuke or abandons this fascist and stop being ninja,

Being alone is necessary for Sasuke's revolution bc all of the shinobi people are blinded by shinobi village system, even in peace time child soldier still in practice where children still taught in ninja academy about fighting but not history of its dark side, in konoha shinden mirai still glorifies 3rd hokage without knowing his dirty secret and many house women talking about their children being in ninja academy but why chidren needs to go to ninja academy or shinobi missions only adults can go as it is peace time meaning nor kakashi nor naruto did not change a thing still practicing child soldier shinobi custom, bc of this non changing mindset of shinobi from these villages which is why Sasuke has to bear his Revolution alone so he could slowly uprooted it little by little and thus he can completely change the past of this shinobi village system no he will slowly destroy it to the core until shinobi start to live like normal civilian people so past will be totally transformed slowly

For sole reason why sasuke has to bear darkness alone in his revolution as darkness of the village causes proxy and cold wars or genocide or cycle of hatred, personal tragedy, brainwashing people immorally etc. which causes more and great war geopolitically down the line in the shinobi world and why changing the past of the shinobi system is necessary as everyone is blinded by the system

so in easy term sasuke has to do his revolution solely alone to be impartial as everyone is blinded by the system and behaves like blind brainwashed tool where no will understand his point how dangerous they have become under shinobi system and by becoming a darkness that darkness that shinobi system has been using for its villages hegemony and its interest and to destroy the past that current shinobi system has been based upon that caused so many inhuman acts and injustice that made everyone blind and ignorant to the truth and humanity and created paradoxical aspect in its nature and core
