After finishing She-Ra 2018 I'm trying to work on my unified theory for why CatDora bothers me as the endgame ship. Cause as CEO of mentally ill cartoon women, there's something about it that feels a disservice to Catra's psychology and trauma. She is genuinely such an interesting character to watch because they so clearly lay out the abusive dynamic that informs her entire character, but by the kiss, I feel like they lost steam with it.

The biggest thing to me is the simple fact that Adora is basically a trigger for her. Adora's personality as someone who is constantly self-sacrificing and forgiving is something Catra has a deep hatred for because she believes she is worthless and unforgivable, and when people try to help her she feels they're using her to look better while she fails to get better.

The fact that ADORA herself was the one in that original dynamic that traumatized the hell out of her makes me uncomfortable with how Catra eventually just... stops getting set off by things. I just can't imagine how what happened leading up to their kiss would desensitize Catra enough to that trauma response that she'd be in love with her. Like in that same season she was fucking death gripping the table at hearing Adora's name, and in seasons earlier she straight up like dissociated when people brought up her heroics. Not only the unearned healing, but the "I've loved you all along" feels a bit patronizing to her past. That all her emotionality was complicated romantic feelings, and not... having really nasty childhood trauma.

You have no idea how hands-shaking, looking-down-off-a-cliff scared I was to scroll down when Catra began to say sorry and got cut off. I had to take almost a full minute to brace myself cuz I was so afraid Glimmer would do the thing so many other protags have done where they just accept the apology for the sake of expediency or compassion or their own regrets or to focus on moving forward. Or to excuse away the apologizers actions as not their own because of manipulation or emotion. I've been waiting since Day One for this hoping it wouldn't be like those, especially considered canon didnt even attempt it and that left my love for this series feeling like it was missing a piece.

I could never expected it go this hard. Glimmer's grief and guilt and cold rage feels so tangible, and the sheer strength it feels like it took to both acknowledge and honestly deliver those feelings to Catra with no sugarcoating while not full-on attacking her with them and driving a wedge into the only refuge either of them have from Prime breaks my heart. Acknowledging Catra feels sorry but telling her flat out no apology or atonement could heal this, so if she feels sorry thats her own damn problem. A perfect interstice of emotional fortitude and frailty. I could never have dreamt of a moment this great.

Glimmer was always my fave in canon but this catapulted her into the fucking celestial firmament. The catharsis I'm feeling right now makes me feel like I could jump the goddamned moon. This moment alone is my favorite exploration of grief and forgiveness ive seen in a fandom like this since ATLA's The Southern Raiders. I cant wait to see your spin on the rest of this arc if its even a fraction this good. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for this and for this project. Thank you.

This was such a hard scene to write. I'd had some ideas written down for this scene for quite a while, and we almost got a scene where they discussed what they would say to Adora instead, but I thought it would perhaps be more impactful to tackle the subject of Angella head on.

I'm not completely oblivious to the fact that many people wished Glimmer and Catra had approached the topic of what happened to Angella in canon. And again, I'd never say that this blog is a 'fix-it' for the stuff people didn't like, but sometimes there's stuff that I wish had been in the show - this was one of those things.

But knowing I wanted to put in a scene and actually writing it are two different things. I was so nervous when this one went out, because I worried that people would react negatively to it (but you didn't, thanks everyone!). You're right that having Glimmer go "Oh, sure, don't worry about it" would have felt hollow and really undercut the whole 'Angella is dead' thing. But equally, if Glimmer had said "Sorry isn't enough, I hate you and will never forgive you", it would have been hard to reconcile that level of sheer hatred with them working together later on.

I chose Glimmer's words quite carefully here. I wanted to show that her opting to take her mother's actions as one of heroic sacrifice rather than a desperate last-ditch attempt to save Etheria from Catra's mistake was for her own benefit, not Catra's. Glimmer makes that choice to discard Catra's part in it every day because that's the only way she can manage her grief (especially when face-to-face with Catra), not because she wants Catra to feel better. And that rejection of the apology was not so much a "Your apology means nothing" as it was "Don't try and complicate the way I'm dealing with this." Sorry means she has to reconcile that Catra feels guilt. Sorry upsets her grieving process. She doesn't want it.

I'm so excited for everyone to see the rest of this arc, particularly how things develop through Corridors. We'll soon be seeing Horde Prime step up his manipulation of Catra's depression, and more about how that is affecting her and driving her to desperation. But we also get those bittersweet flashbacks, the reminders that Adora has always been on her side - even when they've been on opposing sides of a war. And finally, the climax of the episode where Catra saves Glimmer, and (at least here) leaves Adora with some chilling words. I always feel like I become a better writer with every episode, and I am so proud of some of the stuff you're about to see.

I actually had to give this some thought because I am part of ship and let ship, and one of my favorite parts of She Ra is how easily and compellingly you can multiship in it. As long as you ignore the fandom that is.

The extremely limited things I've come around on were primarily willingly because I wanted to understand why people liked it.

But, uh..........well, the one and only one I got dragged around into is........................

There's no easy way to say this, but it's Glimmer and Catra.

Which is fucking WILD considering I participated in the first Glitra week in 2019. BUT! Keep in mind that Season 2 didn't come out until April 2019 and between S1 and S2 I actively avoided Glimmer as my least favorite character due mostly to fandom assassination. But yeah I did not like her so I did not get all the C/A/G fics that were out there. There were no fics or art I saw before S2 dropped that were glitra only, so it was introduction via an OT3. I kept hearing good things about Rage Break by Emberswitch (https://archiveofourown.org/works/17227490) and eventually caved to read it, and that was what got me turned towards the idea of Glimmer and Catra as a ship. I hadn't intended to and I hadn't been actively looking to change that opinion, but the hype on the fic eventually did make me go, "Well...what if there is something there though? Maybe I'll take a little peak. For science."

And then somehow I've posted 19 glitra fics and my longest fic ever is HtQY. :|

2. a compelling argument for why your fave would never top or bottom

A compelling argument? Meeeeeeehhhhhh-

But, I do actually headcanon Catra as demiromantic and somewhere on the asexual sliding scale so when I think of canon Catra I think of someone who flirts because she's learned how to do so as a manipulation tactic (both for protection and power), so she comes off as a lot more sexually motivated than she really is. So I don't think my fave would top or bottom because I don't think she's into sex at all. If she has it, she does it more to please her partner so it's a performative act that can be enjoyable but not something she personally is into. If she gets turned on she'd rather rub one out on her own thanks.

Like I said, compelling? Probably not. Is someone still going to be annoyed or angry that I personally headcanon Catra in the show as being aroace but still a lesbian with a powerful and loving relationship? Yeah. People still fucking hate asexuals and aromantics, and I'm sure someone thinks I'm a lesbophobe for it lol.

So I think I'm still choosing violence here.

Especially because the complimentary side to this is canon Adora is not a top. She might enjoy pleasing her partners but you really think the person who has taken multiple gold medals in overthinking something so hard that you turn it into a disaster and your own worst nightmare wants to take charge during something as strange, vulnerable, gross, amazing, and complex as sex????

Catradora is canon gets overhyped. Like, sorry folks, I love them and was glad to see them be recognized in canon very explicitly at the end and have seen them be obviously a thing but through more subtext and interpretation before then. But catradora itself is overhyped.

Like, I can't remember who it is (you? Tispy? someone else??????) who straight up didn't watch the show for a long time because catradora focus was so intense that it was off putting.

Honestly I'm not sure if it's 'topic' so much as like. Proximity. Which is a really heart wrenching thing to type.

(MASSIVE HEADER, I'VE BEEN IN FANDOMS BESIDES SHE RA, THIS DOESN'T APPLY TO THE MANY COOL SHE RA SERVERS I'M IN)

The most fun discord servers I've been in have had lots of different kinds of people. Really fun friendly types who were welcoming sure, but also snarky people or shy ones or others who were a little neurotic and rarely talked (me).

That leads to lots of different conversations and lots of different ideas which I think is a lot of fun for a fandom to have. But in retrospect it feels a little like there was this. Seemingly inevitable march towards division. Like small cracks keep forming as every one branches out. The internet as a whole has become pretty... discourse filled.

that doesn't exactly answer the question since the real Most Rancid Topic is like, problematicness or something. But I think division between friends in fandom hurts the most. I've started to come to the opinion that having a discord server in a fandom is like, a garden, and if you want an excellent community it probably takes some great amount of conscious effort and planning, but I'm not an expert in that

9 & 10. Worst Part of Fanon:

This isn't the 'worst' or anything but something I love about the show is how messy every one's feelings are. Glimmer and Catra practically kiss on screen (in my heart). Adora crushes on like half the girls she sees, Perfuma and Bow go on a date, Entrapta says 'its a date!' super casually. Catra blushes at scorpia etc etc

It's really fun to see the whole cast getting criss crossed in modern au's, but a lot of fanon just has them all destined for their endgame pairings from the start and I'd love to see some genuine glitra or glimmadora or scortrapta that's more than just the initial plot for something else.

Worst Part of Canon:

The worst part of canon is probably either like... Scorpia getting almost no resolution or Glimmer's season 4 plot line pretty much stopping dead in its tracks.

My real curveball opinion is that Spinerella and Netossa got WAY too much screentime in season 5!

They were pretty much entirely absent the first 4 seasons (even when glimmer was suddenly struggling with being queen.) So it was really surprising. Now, I of course loved their scenes. Extremely cute and gay, I absolutely see why they were included. But I feel there was so much to do and so little time setting up an entire arc that didn't necessarily have to be there.

14. What do I see in fanfic all the time:

(just a quick note that I've read lots of fics from really cool people I know on discord or have never met! She Ra fandom has GREAT fanfic. This isn't targeted at any one and if you're seeing this it's not about your fic!!)

TENSION AND BUILD UP FALLS APART CONSTANTLY!! for me I'm a fight scene writer and I think everyone can benefit from giving these serious attempts. When you write 3000 words of straight combat, you're forced to learn the push and pull and management of the stakes. The characters can't just yell loudly and keep going higher and higher, you need dips and crests and variety

Most fanfics don't have fight scenes (in this fandom anyways), but many have scenarios with the *pacing* of a fight scene. I consider arguments, sex, and reveals to be types of fights. They're great, but using only dialogue or straightforward descriptions will get cumbersome very quickly.

Fights teach you to pace out steps, descriptive variety, build up, all sorts of things!

Unfortunately a lot of she ra fics don't have a 'fight scene' (read: [big] argument, sex, or reveals) until late in the story. I think this causes a lot of authors to fumble their build up, moving too quickly and not lingering for dramatic effect. That's why it's important to practice 'fight scenes' so that you'll be ready for the climactic finish!

The Former Horde Soldiers Discovering New Things part 2: Real food

So as we know, nice things and basic necessities were basically illegal in the Horde, so the Former Horde soldiers grew up only eating ration bars. So the concept of real food is completely strange to all of them at first.

I headcanon that after the war when the Horde disbanded, it took a while for them to get used to real food, and for the first few months, most of them (except for Adora who tried real food almost immediately after meeting Bow and Glimmer) ate bar shaped foods or foods that resembled ration bars as they were pretty nervous of trying new foods (even though ration bars probably taste like utter shit and they can't even be that good for you). But I think the first bit of real food they tried were those dumplings some of the characters ate in one of the season 5 episodes, and slowly the former Horde soldiers begin to get used to real foods.

Although none of them can handle food with the SLIGHTEST bit of spice. They all think salt is spicy. Seeing people put salt or pepper on their food baffles all of the former Horde soldiers. For the first few months at least. I think over time they become more tolerant to spices and herbs.

However, none of them know how to cook. Scorpia tries to, but she mostly ends up burning everything. But she tries and that's all that matters.

They also all eat really quickly, as in the Horde they most likely had to eat their rations quickly before getting back to training or some shit, so for like the first month they're just inhaling the food they get in like a minute flat, and everyone else is like "Oh my ra, please slow down guys, ya food isn't gonna go anywhere-" and once they begin slowing down, they begin enjoying the food, albeit still getting used to food not tasting like nasty stuff.

As for favourite foods they've tried (feel free to give your own headcanons too):

Adora really likes ice cream and her favourite flavour is probably cookies n cream. No specific reason but she just strikes me as a cookies n cream girl.

Scorpia's fave is either stew or mac and cheese. But she HATES leafy greens (which is canon) and is a picky eater overall, as she gets nervous when trying new things. But when she discovers sweets/candy, she is BEDAZZLED. She especially likes cotton candy and the feeling of it melting in her mouth, so Perfuma always buys her lil buckets of cotton candy, but Scorpia has to be very careful when picking out the cotton candy with her big claws, and she needs to have it little by little, as her tastebuds aren't used to sweet things in large quantities. (I thank my friend @spam-t0n for this headcanon.)

Catra for some reason really likes cheese. Just cheese on its own, like she'll just eat from a bag of shredded/grated cheese like it's nobody's business. But she REFUSES to touch a carrot, let alone eat one.

Huntara (cause she used to be a Horde soldier too) has probably been living off of bugs and survival food due to living in the Crimson Waste, but I can imagine she likes the taste of honey cause I read a fanfic about it once.

Side note, because my OC Teddy is good at cooking and baking, I can imagine, when they eventually become comfortable around them, (as Teddy is a very shy person and it usually takes them a while to come around) Teddy begins making breakfast for the former Horde soldiers sometimes. Most likely homemade waffles and fresh fruit, and it becomes sort of a weekly thing.

ooh this is a tough one! this list is not an objective ranking, my fave characters shuffle up and down depending on what sort of media i’m into at the moment^^

elliot alderson (mr robot): he’s so driven and determined but makes so many mistakes. he goes through wonderful character development and i love his process of working through his trauma.

lelouch (code geass): the original magnificent bastard. some people think he’s a bit extra or too overpowered, but that’s kind of the appeal of lelouch. he’s such a...rootable character? you always kind of want to see what he’s gonna do next and how he’s gonna win.

xie lian (heaven official’s blessing): he’s not the character archetype i normally like but i love how he clings onto this core of kindness despite how awful his life has been and ultimately that kindness is what saves him!

qi yan (clear and muddy loss of love): again, another intelligent manipulative character who has to balance love and revenge. i love that she gets the whole count of monte cristo treatment, in infiltrating a family and carrying out revenge, and her constant struggle between attaining revenge and loving jingnu is just...really satisfying(?) to read.

jaime lannister (asoiaf): his arc in the books is still my favourite part of asoiaf. i love his journey from someone who’s apathetic and ready to do awful things to preserve his position to someone who’s not a good person but is trying to be better. the chapters where he loses his hand and tries to cope are still some of my all-time fave book scenes.

kurapika (hunter x hunter): ahaha i think he’s like...the third revenge seeker on this list? just like qi yan i like his struggle between revenge and moving on. i like how logical and single-minded he is (and his powers are so cool)

azula (atla): she’s been one of my favourite characters for nearly....ten years now? maybe ever since i first watched avatar as a kid. i just latched onto her immediately. i love her duality of being this ruthless badass prodigy and also a fourteen year old girl who’s kind of socially awkward and doesn’t know how to interact in terms not related to warfare or hierarchy. forever mad that she got put into an asylum(!) in the comics.

catra (she-ra): she’s so messed up and she hurts everyone around her because of it and i loved that she got a happy ending in the end.

laurent (captive prince): he can be so manipulative and ruthless and i love that he can also be caring when his defense mechanisms are down.

izaya (durarara): he’s so awful and so unapologetic about it? and whenever he appears in the narrative you know something chaotic and hilarious or horrible is about to happen.

Weeell I wouldn't say I hate this character, hate is a strong word here, better say i just got really tired of them

But anyway I gotta go with Catra. I wasn't that interested in her arc even before entrapdak and the galactic horde stuff got my full attention, C/a rubs me the wrong way for many reasons, she's everywhere and it can get annoying, she deeply hurt and wronged literally all my faves in the show ("and i took that personally!") and her redemption arc sucked. Like for many others s5 ruined her and her arc for me Oh and add her toxic fans to the mix and you'll get a character i can't even force myself to enjoy anymore. But I have to admit, sometimes I miss s1-s3 era when i still found her endearing and interesting

At this point whenever post s3 Catra is on screen and that particular scene does not spark joy at all I skip it immediately. Like the second I see her sitting on Hordak's throne i just go "Alright, you're done, you're done". I've somewhat become just like Hordak antis (in terms of paying attention to her scenes) and this realization scares me. But at least if there's an open discussion i don't rely solely on my biases and shitty memory and go and actually rewatch her scenes attentively to make sure i'm not making stuff up

Reliving this is a trip. I was an interesting feeling the first time thru, and I'm not saying that to humorously downplay a horrific situation. It drew out a little bit of sympathy for Catra I really thought I'd used up by that point, if only cuz what Prime does is really that vile. That's super unusual for me. I went in rooting for Adora to take back someone she cared about, not necessarily cuz it was Catra specifically if you know what I mean, but this got me to want Catra rescued weirdly well. I almost never feel for villains at their nadir like this.

Twisted how empathetic paragon heroes like Adora are among my most treasured characters in fiction, yet I suck at extending the same sympathy they can. You're supposed to see characters like Catra (or Azula or Bakugou or whoever you please) going thru awful things as flawed people with interior lives and subject to exterior circumstances that the heroes are kind/strong/savvy enough to see and incorporate into their responses and my knee jerk is still "fuck off with the pity party, get to the atonement." Or in a lot of cases to laugh while they're down. I always sabotage myself by seeing the author making horrible things happen to the rival/villains, and contrasting them with worse villains, as a cynical tactic to get me and the heroes to sympathize before they've started changing for the better.

It helped that Catra already saved Glimmer at her own peril, and Adora already would've saved Catra no matter what, but still. This is a big reason why villain mind control is one of my least fave tropes. Manipulation and coercion are all good because meaningful agency and responsibility are still there even if characters can't see it, and that is everything in my eyes. To me mind control is the writer hitting pause on a character's growth til a more convenient time in the plot. Or just forever. *cough*🌊🦂🧙‍♂️.

Most of my appreciation for pre-s5 Catra only built up in retrospect through meta-posts and following fanworks like this. So seriously thank you for this series; it's like experiencing the series as it was intended for the first time, weird as that sounds.

You're version of this sequence is as skin-crawling as I think we all could've hoped/feared. Prime is the worst kind of living scum. Great work. Now I can start counting down to the "you miscalculated." scene. Aimee Carrero crushed that line. Can't wait for your version. Positively dancing with anticipation.

It is - at least to me - a really interesting point for Catra to be at, narratively speaking, because it shows the dialectic in her journey. She both did and didn't "bring it upon herself" - yes, she tried to get in Prime's good books, but no, she didn't ask to be chipped. Yes, she saved Glimmer against his instruction, but no, she didn't know the full consequences of what that would do. And when you get people on different sides of the argument, some saying "poor meowmeow didn't deserve this" and others saying, "She's reaping what she's sown", actually they're both right, in this way.

I don't think it would have worked going straight to the atonement, anyway. We don't have these scenes to revel in the depth of her lowest point, we have them to show how bad, how inescapable it was - and then we set up to escape them!

The whole story with Prime has been an interesting writing journey, too. Every time I review the lines, I tweak them to make them that little bit more realistic, that little bit more uncomfortable. I'm painfully aware that we're seeing a lot of similar rhetoric flying around from real people in the media these days (particularly with anti-trans bullshit), and it's no coincidence that Prime is a reflection of this. But my focus isn't on "Oh look, doesn't this character sound like the person trying to destroy our lives", it's on "This character, like the people you've seen on the news, might think they're right but they will never win. They will never defeat us."

Indeed, the Save the Cat books (yes, this episode did remind me of them... It's probably where the name is from) talk about the 'All is Lost' point and the 'Dark Night of the Soul' - this is where we're at right now. It's bad, it's the worst - but it's going to get better.

First character I ever fell in love with:

ENTRAPTA! From the theme song! Literally I saw her in the SPOP intro and fell in love with her design, her smile, her eVeRyThiNg. In the beginning of the show I was as just waiting for her to be introduced.

A character I used to love/like but now I don’t:

Catra and Mermista (and Perfuma a bit). I used to think Mermista was kinda funny but after seeing the way she treated Entrapta in Season 5 (and Perfuma) I started to dislike her.

Catra on the other hand, after she literally stabbed Entrapta in the back (and started to treat Scorpia really bad), I started to hate her. A lot.

A ship I used to love/like but now I don’t:

I used to be fine with Catradora. Indifferent. I don’t like it much now. I would’ve preferred Glimmadora (Glimmer x Adora). I feel like they sped up Catra’s redemption too much, and honestly it felt rushed (the romance I mean. No, them dancing in Princess Prom isn’t romantic, Catra kidnapped Adora’s friends afterwards and Adora wasn’t happy during the whole thing. No, Catra abusing and scratching Adora isn’t romance either. No, their childhood memories aren’t romantic either, Catra was being very possessive over Adora and hit her multiple times. The only ‘romance’ was the ending when they kissed). Glimmadora also seemed to be what the show was going for (at least to me it seemed that way). Also I should probably add that I used to see Adora and Catra as sisters so Catradora is SUPER weird to me...

Favorite character EVER:

ENTRAPTA! With Hordak and Adora as close seconds.

Prettiest character:

Hmm this ones tough. I’m stuck between She-Ra and Perfuma (she looked really pretty in “Princess Prom”). I’m going with Perfuma.

Probably Catra. Or Horde Prime. Or Shadow Weaver. Ok I dislike a lot of characters. I’m going with Catra, since Horde Prime is supposed to be hated (and Shadow Weaver too).

Catra. I don’t loathe her, I just think the writers could’ve done a better job with her redemption? She definitely deserves to be happy, don’t get me wrong but it felt VERY rushed and strange. Being completely honest here, after Season 3 she felt sort of irredeemable to me. She definitely needed more than one act of good on Horde Prime’s ship. More than a measly sorry for sending Entrapta away to Beast Island (I still swear she only apologized because she was scared Entrapta would mess up the chip-surgery-thing). She needed more than a few episodes.

I’d also like to say, that the princesses weren’t even uncomfortable with her presence! Frosta reacted ‘correctly’ (in character I suppose) by punching her, but the other princesses didn’t even care about it that much?! I swear the princesses cared more about Entrapta ‘betraying’ them (listen they were the ones that left HER behind thinking that she died. Besides, Catra also manipulated Entrapta into thinking that her friends don’t care about her, of course she stayed in the Horde! The people in the Horde (mainly Scorpia and Hordak) treated her better than the princesses, why would she leave?) than Catra suddenly changing sides and being with them?!? Catra?! THE PERSON THEY’VE FOUGHT WITH THE MOST? CATRA WHO LITERALLY KIDNAPPED BOW AND GLIMMER!?!? CATRA WHO ALMOST ENDED THE WORLD BY OPENING A PORTAL?!?! CATRA WHO KILLED ANGELLA BY OPENING SAID PORTAL?!?

Does anyone have any idea where the effort of trying to shoe-horn Hordak as the big bad ultimate abuser came from? you see it on a lot of older catradora blogs (malachai walker comes to mind) and I genuinely have no idea how something like that happens given whats presented in canon.

It’s hard to say for sure, anon. To my mind, there could be multiple factors at play.

The most obvious one, of course, is Hordak’s asphyxiation of Catra back in Signals. I think that scene soured a lot of Catra fans on him (though the way the scene plays out, she’s not nearly as affected by the whole thing as she is by abuse from her actual abuser, Shadow Weaver). Which is, y’know, fair in a general sense, but it becomes kind of... well, disingenuous when such an action nets him the title of “irredeemable abuser” when Catra does far worse and still somehow ends up a redeemable fave in these fans’ eyes. It’s also an action that doesn’t result in any sort of actual abusive pattern, plus something that quickly fades into the background once Catra succeeds in lying to, manipulating, controlling, and physically assaulting Hordak multiple times. 

I often feel like people who cite this event and ignore everything else basically chose to stop paying attention to Hordak’s arc at that moment; they fail to acknowledge the fact that he is a far deeper, more complicated character than his initial scenes portray. And so they miss out on the lack of pattern. And on the level of damage Catra ends up doing to him.

The other potential factor that comes to mind, at least for me, is a little more... I don’t want to say “controversial,” but... I don’t know... subjective, maybe? Definitely my opinion, in any case.

Essentially: SPoP is a progressive show. In its younger audience, it seems to have many fans who are very much for certain “woke” concepts and against certain others. And these sorts of fans find a young, abused girl to be a very appealing protagonist, while an older, angry man (especially one supposedly guilty of imperialist deeds) can be nothing but an antagonist. They want the narrative to fit into their preconceived notions, and the fact that it doesn’t just kind of seems to pass them by.

For these fans, the fact that this young, abused girl ends up with a significant bit of agency and subsequently dishes out some of the worst abuse in the series, while this older, angry man has all agency taken from him, is the victim of horrific trauma, and ends up startlingly sympathetic is incompatible with their view of how the show “should” play out. So the nuance is lost on them. And they continue to claim that the older, angry man is the abuser because... well, because in their minds, that’s what the Standard Abuser looks like.

They find it hard to admit that Hordak doesn’t end up being that big, bad abuser. And they find it even harder to admit that Catra ends up being... not so great in that respect; at times. So they maintain their “Hordak is the abuser” narrative because it’s more comfortable for them. Especially given that many of them seem to identify with Catra, y’know?

That’s how I see it, at least, given what I’ve seen people say, and how I’ve seen them behave.

It’s a shame, really. SPoP is so interesting in how it takes characters to places one doesn’t necessarily expect them to go. Especially with Hordak, given how his portrayal starts out.

Shadow Weaver and Horde Prime would be way too obvious, so Catra. Sure, there are times where I do like her, she’s very interesting, very different from my faves. But I would also deck her on sight, she is such an asshole, and not even in the cool, fun way.

10. Most disliked arc? Why?

Long story short, everyone’s. It’s like noelle had a plan for these characters, like they cared about these characters, and then they just. Threw away said plan for a bad romance I guess. Characters like Glimmer, Bow, and the princesses were shoved to the side and weren’t given an opportunity to actually decide if they wanted to forgive Catra or not. They’d been fighting her for so long, but hey, she and Adora, the main character who is constantly pushed aside for said catgirl, are so in love they can’t say anything otherwise. The side characters that were hyped up so much and were considered so important were just instantly dropped. And then there’s Catra, who did deserve better writing then whatever the fuck that was.

15. Unpopular opinion about the manga/show?

For a show about friendship and family and forging your own path, making the story about romance and an abusive relationship at the last minute was just. So bad. The racism and ableism made it all the worse. Hardly worth the watch, but only if you really want to see a couple good characters and can ignore abismal writing.

Okey doke, let's go! :D Thanks a bunch for the ask!! blorbo (favorite character, character I think about the most) Ooh god, this is already hard asdljfadf. Hmmm. This is a very basic choice, but I'm going to go with Adora. I relate to her too much for that not to be true. "You're worth more than what you give to other people" made me burst into tears and still does so 9/10 times I rewatch that scene. scrunkly (my “baby”, character that gives me cuteness aggression, character that is So Shaped) Emily is a scrunkly. Excellent robot friend :D scrimblo bimblo (underrated/underappreciated fave) As someone who's poked around the SPOP fandom before, I feel like who's considered "underrated/underappreciated" HIGHLY depends on which corner you happen to be inhabiting, but I'll go with Glimmer, even though I'm not sure she counts. Love her and her character arc and her aggressive sparkles. If you don't think Glimmer counts for this, either Entrapta or Bow. Tech whiz who has a bigger impact than she knows (and is worth more than she thinks), and the heart of a whole lot of things who refuses to not wear a crop top. glup shitto (obscure fave, character that can appear in the background for 0.2 seconds and I won’t shut up about it for a week) Mara. Hands down. Or maybe Mara and Light Hope both, honestly. They don't get a lot of screen time, but their stories both hit really hard, and their dynamic/relationship is top tier. poor little meow meow (“problematic”/unpopular/controversial/otherwise pathetic fave) This label is "poor little meow meow"...I have to pick Catra, aldfsja xD Resident cat girl, has made five million mistakes, finally fought for and got her happy ending. You can find at Least three times as many debates on her character as the mistakes she's made if you go looking for them, but I really do love her. She's blatantly and flat-out imperfect, and she doesn't know how to handle emotions that aren't anger (and to be fair, doesn't really "handle" anger that well either), but she's got herself a magic therapy cat, a girlfriend, and a good future, and I couldn't be happier for her. horse plinko (character I would torment for fun, for whatever reason) Hmmmm...again, kinda basic answer, but I guess I'd have to go with Horde Prime? I'm only hesitant because he's the type of villain I would rather just see gone rather than tortured (even though he's a terrible person) because I don't trust him to stay contained if he's alive, but if I had to pick someone...yeah sure. Put him through the horse plinko. He deserves it. eeby deeby (character I would send to superhell) Double Trouble, if only because their shenanigans to get out of it would be hilarious.
