Ughhhh the neighbors took it upon themselves to fix up their electric fence after they've had to call their giant dog away from going apeshit at my horse several times. The thing just runs up to bark and pace the fence while my horse just stands there and doesn't really care. And no surprise the dog yet again just squeezes under the electric with ease to come over and rabidly freak the fuck out and started jumping on our fence at my horse, again while pony just stands there. Like, my horse seems to like that particular corner to stand around and fall asleep at, which doesn't help because I'm sure that once the dog is let outside to do his business he just goes straight for the horse. I get that we're in the country but there's still some extent that you should keep your dogs around, hell even a neighbor a few houses down that I've met has complained about them roaming. I can't wait till I eventually catch the chance to speak with them 🙃

LIFE IN THE FAST LANE
in the market for some weird animal facts? well, I’m happy to oblige. you look like a discerning customer with a real need for speed, so allow me to introduce you to one of Nature’s finest sports models! they’re lean, they’re mean, and they can go 0-60 in 3 seconds flat! and boy, that engine really purrs.
put the pedal to the metal, because it’s-
Tumblr media Tumblr media
CHEETAH! he can really move! CHEETAH! with anxious attitude! CHEETAH! HE’S THE FASTEST THING ALIIIIIIIIVE
Cheetahs are large spotty cats built along the same lines as a Greyhound. (the dog, not the bus.) they’re found throughout sub-Saharan Africa and some parts of Asia, where they sprint around like maniacs and pose for tourists to their heart’s content. at least 75% of every Cheetah is limbs by volume, and they sport a pair of iconic black tear track markings that would make Gerard Way jealous.
you’ve probably seen them before on junk food packaging in your local grocery store, but their real claim to fame is that they’re the fastest land animal on the entire planet. vroom vroom!
Tumblr media
the whole Dangerously Cheesy thing is just a side job.
there’s a surprising amount of really dang fast animals on this planet, (most are mammals, but none of then are hedgehogs.) but the Cheetah has them all beat for sheer ground speed alone. other animals can run further or for longer, but none can match the Cheetah’s absolutely insane landspeed record of 61 to 70 miles per hour. (ish.)
that’s an absolutely absurd amount of speed for something that has paws instead of wheels or wings. in fact, that’s even faster than some creatures who DO have wings! (those creatures probably feel pretty bad right now, and they should.) to give some perspective: if you’re a Cheetah, it’s straight-up fucking illegal to sprint in almost all of Illinois. (good luck arresting a Cheetah though, they’re bitey!)
Tumblr media
you have the right to OW you have the right to remain silent OW STOP BITING ME
while it’s a known fact that Cheetahs are THE fastest mammal currently in existence on our beautiful planet, exactly how fast they are is a subject of some debate and also some academic hair-pulling. (there’s a surprising amount of hair-pulling in academia, both figurative and literal.) this is because it’s actually pretty difficult to a) motivate any animal to sprint at full speed for your own personal amusement, and b) calculate exactly how fast said animal is moving once you’ve motivated it into sprint mode.
methods for clocking the speed of a sprinting Cheetah have included solutions as fancy-schmancy sciencetech as radio-tracking GPS collars, radar guns, and carefully measured artificial courses, and also solutions as straight-up mad max bullshit as driving next to the sprinting Cheetah in a rusted-out truck and just having an intern watch the speedometer, or dragging bait behind a speeding car and having a different intern watch the speedometer. these methods give some very different results, as you might imagine.
Tumblr media
there’s a surprising amount of straight-up mad max bullshit in science, because fancy-schmany sciencetech can only get you so far.
Cheetahs can only sustain this absolutely insane burst of speed for about thirty seconds, but that’s more than long enough for their purposes. Cheetahs mostly hunt antelope, who are slower but definitely no slackers in the speed department themselves. this often leads to suspenseful high-speed chases all over the dang place like an episode of Serengeti: Cheetah Vice Squad.
once a Cheetah has located its intended victim, it uses its incredible speed to turbo boost close enough to Blue Shell the hapless antelope’s legs right out from under it, sending it tumbling and causing a tragic antelope-pileup on the Serengeti and probably ending up on the antelope evening news. and then just to add insult to injury, the Cheetah bites its neck open and eats it.
Tumblr media
I’ve said it before, but nature is so mean. SO MEAN.
Cheetahs are the only big cat to have this particular hunting style, and it’s because there’s no other cats quite like them. they’re not even technically “big cats”, but something so weird that they have an entire genus, Acinonyx, completely to themselves. and they’re so weird because mother nature minimaxed them for Speed and dumped every other stat to do it.
Cheetahs are long, lanky, flexible, and very lightly built. this gives them the power to accelerate like a Ferrari on bath salts, but it also makes them really bad at basically anything else large cats are usually known for. Cheetahs also can’t roar, and instead they make noises usually associated with your garden-variety tabby cat. they chirp, meow, hiss, mew, and even purr! (I don’t know about you, but I’ll take a purr over a roar any day.)
Tumblr media
literally everything about this cat is intended to fling it forward at the highest rate of giddyup possible, and I can respect that.
but this hyperspecialized body plan comes with a price: Cheetahs are relatively weak and incredibly fragile. in fact, they’re completely outmatched by just about every other predator in Africa! they get bullied, bodied, and have their kills stolen and cubs infanticided on a pretty regular basis. this is very sad and awful, and it’s why every Cheetah in existence is an anxious mess.
no seriously, Cheetahs are notoriously anxious animals, even in captivity! this is rough for the Cheetah and can be a huge problem for animals in zoos and breeding programs. but luckily there’s a solution to soothe these unlucky anxious kitties- support dogs!
Tumblr media
enough talk about infanticide, time for PUPPIES!
some zoos have begun raising puppies and Cheetah kittens together, giving the Cheetahs a sibling with a more laissez faire outlook on life to look up to. and the weirdest part is- it’s working! Cheetahs in breeding programs that are given dog siblings are even beginning to have the cubs they were too nervous to have before, and it’s all thanks to the positive life outlook of man’s best friend!
and that’s important, because Cheetahs are currently listed as Vulnerable. their population and range is shrinking, and these captive breeding programs are vital to keeping their numbers healthy. international efforts are underway to protect the Cheetahs and their habitat, and there’s hope that these fragile nervous speedsters will continue to blitz their way into the future.
Tumblr media
with dog, all things are possible.

Also, while playing outside at the care center, Riley has mounted handlers on multiple occasions and growled at them when they attempt to get him off. For this reason we recommend an adult-only home for Riley. Place with a New Hope partner: Due to Riley's resource guarding, low threshold for arousal, and bite history with a dog in his previous home, we recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide any necessary behavior modification (force-free, positive reinforcement-based) and re-evaluate behavior in a stable home environment before placement into a permanent home. Potential challenges: : House soiling,Resource guarding,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,Bite history (dog),Low threshold for arousal Potential challenges comments:: House soiling: The previous owners report that Riley is only partially housetrained and may have accidents in the home. Please see handout on House soiling. Resource guarding: The previous owners report that Riley will growl when the toy he has in his possession is touched or taken away. Please see handout on Resource guarding. Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: The previous owners report that Riley will growl when the toy he has in his possession is touched or taken away and they also report that Riley growls at tall men, which both show a potential for defensive aggression. Please see handout on Fearful/potential for defensive aggression. Bite history (dog): The previous owners report that Riley bit the small resident dog in the home, leaving 5 punctures. The exact cause of this bite is unknown but the owners suspect Riley was guarding food that had fallen on the floor. Low threshold for arousal: While playing fetch outside at the care center, Riley has become aroused and mounted handlers on multiple occasions. When they attempt to get him off, he growls at them. Please see handout on Low threshold for arousal. My medical notes are... Weight: 44.6 lbs Vet Notes 3/14/2019 DVM Intake Exam Estimated age: Approx 6 years Microchip noted on Intake? So I sometimes feel a little guilty about getting Ripley (zero regrets! No take backs! Much like Claudius and his throne, I feel a little bad about circumstances, but would not give up what I gained and do not repent), because I kind of spotted and pounced on an opportunity in a small, emotionally volatile window in my household.
I have wanted a GSD since I was a teenager - there are a lot of breeds I think are cool and would not have minded having if it worked out that way. For example, I once fell madly in love with an adorable brown-and-white husky/malamute cross at an adoption fair, and cried when I left after 20 minutes. Like, I seriously would have taken him home and tried to convince my landlords after the fact that it would not be a problem had it not been for the ABSOLUTELY CANNOT LIVE IN A HOUSE WITH CATS warning he came with. OK, it was a reputable rescue so I couldn’t have gotten away with taking him home without proof of landlord permission, but OMG I so wanted to. And I’m not generally even a fan of sled dogs in general! I like malamutes better than huskies or Samoyeds, but I grew up in an area with a lot of dog racers and have hence met a lot of sled dogs and rejected sled dogs and sled dog crosses, and they are not anywhere in my “dream breed” list.
Anyhow, there are a lot of dog breeds I probably could have been happy with, but I’ve had a soft spot for GSDs for 20+ years, and my in-laws’/landlords’ last elderly dog had just been put down shortly before I got Ripley, leaving the house dogless, The primary reason they had a dog in the first place was because large dogs discourage burglars - they got Meg after a break-in, and Lola a year or so later. So while my in-laws winter in Florida and leave the house and left the dogs in our care, they still liked having big dogs on the property - even elderly, disabled, excessively friendly dogs. Meg had died a few years ago (three years ago this April, run over by a door-to-door salesperson), and Lola’s cancer had advanced to the point that we had to let her go early in the summer of 2016.
So the house was dogless, my in-laws were mourning Lola but also worrying about a dogless property, and I had been wanting a dog of my own for years (a no-go with socially-awkward disabled senior-citizen dog Lola), and I saw this ad on craigslist for GSD puppies. L and I had been haunting the local bully rescue groups for ages, but in over a year, not a single rescue bully mix in 250 miles of us was approved for a household with cats, so while we’d seen several we would otherwise have loved to meet and see about adopting, none of them would be safe options with Harley in our house. L would really love to have a bully breed dog, and I also like them - they’re adorable, usually v loving to humans, and tend to be snugglers. L and I also both agreed that we’d enjoy a Rottie, given our experiences to date with the breed. He wasn’t wild about the thought of a GSD because of the whole “slope back”/hip dysplasia thing (I know, I know, that’s not actually a thing and HD is an issue but not related to how a dog stacks. Neither of us knew that at the time). At least he didn’t dislike the dogs themselves the way I actively dislike standard poodles (it’s probably just bad breeding and lousy training, but literally EVERY standard poodle I’ve ever met has been a neurotic, aggressive, kid-chasing, low-bite-threshold complete asshole, and I will literally leave a park or pet store if I see one because I don’t trust them or their handlers at all), but he was concerned about potential health issues.
But there was this ad for adorable puppies, and I convinced my MiL to come and “just take a look” at them (to be fair, I really did think we could just take a look at them and then go meet some other puppies and young dogs, and make a calm and thoughtful decision). And I fell totally in love with Ripley, as did my MiL, and we wound up bringing her home. L knew we were going to go check out puppies (although he had work and couldn't join us), and he does love Ripley, but I basically picked our dog from a breed he was kind of “meh” about because I was the one who took point on Dog Search 2016 and I saw a shot for a dog from my dream breed and I fell in love.
So yeah, we got a BYB GSD, with no research or any real training experience among any of us, and we got PHENOMENALLY lucky - Ripley is a puppy and thus often a total pain in the ass, but she’s absurdly healthy (the vet comments admiringly every time she has a check-up on her physical condition - not just eyes/heart/teeth, but muscle and joint health), incredibly friendly, and (once her puppy fear period passed) utterly fearless. She’ll droop her ears and give me the Sad Face of Ultimate Pathos during the not-fun part of exams, but she’s never bitten/submissive-peed/behaved in a potentially dangerous fashion during any handling (she will mouth your wrist if you try to haul her by the collar, which is exactly why I don’t do that and tell other people to knock it off if they try it, and she did yelp and scramble/squirm when she was stabbed with the big-ass needle when she was micro-chipped, but has otherwise been a very accommodating - if bouncy - dog). I’ve spent a ridiculous amount of time researching dog behavior in general and GSD needs in particular, and a variety of training methods (some of which were terrible and ill-advised, so thank you non-Milan-esque trainers in general and @slashmarks especially for the advice about how NOT to handle puppy chomping!) since we brought her home.
But I know L would have really liked to have a bully mix, and honestly, I would have been happy with a bully rescue of pretty much any age, had we been able to find one that was OK to have in a house with cats. But I had the chance to get a GSD puppy, and I took it. And honestly, if we get a second dog, I’m OK with a bully as long as it a) is NOT dog or cat aggressive and b) L is willing to be the primary trainer and handler. Rip is already a lot of work, and she’s smart and interested in making me happy. I’m happy to be her trainer, but I still get frustrated and have to take a lot of breaks as is when she gets over-excited. Working with an adult/late-adolescent dog with ingrained habits that is probably not going to be as willing to try to figure out what I mean when I’m unclear is a challenge I don’t know if I’d be up to anytime soon, and most of the bullies up for adoption locally were surrendered at 9-18 months for behavioral issues/poor manners (and are generally in shelter/foster/kennels for a few months before being adopted out) - there are a lot of 12 month+ dogs who aren’t housebroken up for adoption, for example).
If we get a second dog that is also going to be primarily my responsibility, then it’ll be another GSD (or possibly a closely related breed), although next time I’ll probably go with the whole “research and apply to established reputable breeders who produce the kind of dog I’d like to live with” route rather than the “BYB/rescue and trust to luck” route. I suspect I used up 2-3 lifetimes worth of luck getting Ripley, so I want to stack the odds in my favor next time.
#ripley#also ever since my doc suggested taking Rip to the local place that trains service dogs#(who have apparently stopped taking civilian clients altogether so that didn;t pan out)#I've been thinking about whether I'd benefit from even a part-time SD#like I can be fine for months on end if nothing sets me off#but I can also have episodes that last for weeks or months where I only leave the house to teach#because the thought of being in situations where people are physically crowding me is like the htought of walking into a room full of advent#adventourous spiders#learning that you can train a dog to physically create a barrier between you and other people by sitting/standing/lying#to make it hard to actually physically crowd you (especially from behind!)#or to pester you out of a total breakdown that would otherwise have you locked in your panicky head#long enough to actually take anti-anxiety meds/move somewhere where people won;t swarm you#was just like...learning that unicorns are a thing#as my life is right now my crazy is not technically disabling#I can hold down my teaching job even if I otherwise only leave the house to walk Rip#but I'm rarely off our property for more than 15 hours a week including work commute and stopping by the post office or store on the way#anyhow I don;t think Rip will ever have the chill or lack of interest in making new friends to be good at that kind of thing#but if we get another dog it would be pretty great if it had the temperament to pay attention to me in public and resist distraction#in case circumstances change enough that I'm put more than I can handle alone and need some backup

Bully Mixes “American Bully” (Canis Familiaris)
-Bully mix refers to what people generally call “pitbulls”. They usually aren’t, however. The American Pit Bull Terrier is it’s own breed of dog, not a catch all term for broad headed stout dogs. Many “pitbulls” are really bully mixes. They can consist of different breeds like APBT, Bulldogs, Mastiffs, boxers, etc. Since these dogs aren’t set to one uniform breed, they can and will vary wildly.
-When it comes to such a broad term that encompasses so many breeds, the variations are going to be through the roof. Their skulls will have some semi-uniform shapes and elements, but you can have a bully mix that’s 6 inches long, or one that’s 11 inches long. Some could have smoother stops, some could be borderline brachycephalic. The differences and variations are endless. At the end of the day, you don’t need to focus on individual traits from each of the “bully” breeds, you just need to have a general idea of what to look for.
Tumblr media
-The most notable trait of the Bully mix is it’s shape. They’re often big and blocky dogs, fitting smack-dab in the middle of the Mesocephalic group, meaning (simplified) that their heads are as wide as they are long. They’re proportionately square dogs, as a general statement. Of course since they aren’t a solid breed and instead one scoop of the gumbo pot of bully breeds, it can and will differ. A huge bully mix can have a smooth stop and a more triangular shape.
Tumblr media
-Wide arches are another trademark of the bullies. They’re broad and thick to accommodate the powerful muscles atop their heads. They get thicker towards the back than in the front, but that’s a given for most breeds. The arches usually bow out a bit, giving them the “blocky” look that many bully mixes sport in life. You’ll often see people bragging about their “pitbull” having a huge Blocky head. It’s a trait commonly bred for. As a result, it’s not impossible to find a bully that’s got a head way too big for its body.
Tumblr media
-Bully mixes, because of their muscular heads, often have impressive sagittal crests. Even though there’s muscle behind it and an exaggerated crests, it may not translate into a crushing, powerful bite. Compare a bear and a fisher; Fishers have impressive crests, but they aren’t an animal that will destroy your world with their bite. Bears on the other hand don’t have that much of a crest, but their bites are immense and deadly. Back on track, though generally you’ll see a nice crest on bully mixes, some may not display one at all. It all just depends on the dog!
-Teeth are going to be another clue to look at. “Brachy” dogs have the tendency to have exaggerated bites, i.e. Overbites and Underbites. Bully mixes can have both, though they can also be totally fine dentally. Larger examples of bullies, (those likely to possibly have boxer or mastiff influence) are going to be more prone to the under bite. On the same hand, small bullies (Like those with English Bulldog influence) may be more likely to display it as well. Of the examples I’ve personally seen, most of the mid sized dogs look to have relatively normal dental situations. My largest Specimen has an intense underbite, though the 2nd largest doesn’t display any dental changes at all. Teeth are a minor thing to look at but are helpful to consider nonetheless.

-The eye sockets on these guys are generally going to be pretty proportionate. Their ingredient breeds usually aren’t bred with large eyes in the way a Chihuahua might, so you aren’t going to be seeing anything too wild unless you’re getting into toy territory. Boston’s and Frenchies are the big eyed ‘Bully’ toys, but they don’t appear to have much influence in the modern day Bully mix. There are extremes of course, but you’re typically going to run into some pretty average eyes.
Tumblr media
-As per their blocky, boxy heads, Bully mixes will more often than not have thick lower jaw. It’s consistent from the last molar to the canine, rather than doing a sharp taper like a Dolich breeds jaw would. This makes their chin more pronounced as well, giving the very front of their muzzle a flat look.
Tumblr media
-Since bullies aren’t an official breed, everything here is a general statement. I have one skull, a large male bully, who displays all of these traits. On the other hand, I have another large male bully that is the complete opposite of your “typical” bully. He has a rather smooth face, no sagittal crest, thin zygomatics, no dental deformities, etc.. He’s arguably almost Dolich in structure. This dog alone defies all of the classic bully traits, even though he absolutely is a bully. What a jerk.
Tumblr media
-Bully Mixes are dogs made of a large number of dogs, but over the years of bullies breeding with other bullies, they’ve come to display specific, distinguishable traits. If you come across a bully, chances are you’ll know. As with any other breed, make sure to use as many references as you can, and be patient!
-Good luck and happy identifying!

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only Behavior Asilomar: TM - Treatable-Manageable Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner Recommendations comments:: No children: It is reported by the previous owners that Riley will growl when his toy is touched or taken away.
