"Boy in Rome" (The Stories of John Cheever)
But I am not a boy in Rome
I've been falling behind in these Cheever reviews and I feel like I am forgetting a lot of them. This one was a total blank until I reread passages in a Goodreads review and now I'm wondering why I forgot it so thoroughly. I think I can most compare this one to a dream since when I was reading it, I was immersed in the story of a boy who was stuck in Rome because of his father's grave in the Protestant cemetery of Rome and all the seemingly random events.
Tumblr media
Rather than say that it is a story that doesn't know what it wants to say, I will keep that dream metaphor. The protagonist is a teenager who wants to go back to America. Only his father is dead. But then we get the story of his grandfather who keeps having Sunday cookouts in Italy (or is it America) and giving him gristle. So he finally speaks up and asks his grandfather why they have to deal with grandfather's cooking and not mother's eggs. Eggs would be better than the burnt meat.
So that leads to a fight between his father and his grandfather while his mother tells him he messed up. Then his father dies and his grandfather dies and makes sure to leave him the insulting $1 in the will.
Tumblr media
And then there are tour guide scenes and I think someone gets robbed but before we can settle on that plot (this might not be in the story. I might be remembering it wrong) the priest comes to ask why he's not in school and his mother lies, because his mother doesn't care.
So the story falls into a place where he's smuggling a painting into America and then we get an aside going "Hey, by the way, I'm in jail and I'm just imagining all of this" but then it goes back to the end where we find out that the painting isn't even the painting and the duchess who made the deal was just scamming everyone.
Tumblr media
That's the story. Random events in Rome by a man who loved Rome but never quite got Rome but still wanted the romanticized version in his fiction.

Dragon giving Luffy to Garp with the assumption that he's going to take care of him until he's ready to meet his son (because it's dangerous to have a child while he starts a fucking revolution, thank you very much) and then Garp just- Leaving Luffy on a village where he spends 24/7 alone waiting for the pirate he now considers his role model (because he doesn't have anybody else and Shanks is the only father figure around and he's just that nice) to come back from his adventures, and only being taken care of by Makino who has no responsibility over Luffy but still takes care of him because otherwise the kid would probably die from starvation, and lucky for him she's a sweetheart. And then he loses Uta, his only friend (with no explanation at all), to then carry the guilt of Shanks losing an arm for him and suddenly his legacy as a pirate. And then he's sent to another place with other people he doesn't know, because Garp thought "oh, yes, wonderful idea to leave my grandson with this depressed kid and some bandits" and Luffy luckily befriends Ace and Sabo because they're good people. Luckily. And luckily, Dadan is a good mom and loves them. But then Sabo fucking dies because nobody with authority was protecting these kids (I wonder who could've done that). And now Luffy has to carry both guilt, a legacy, and the biggest abandonment issues I've ever seen after losing his best friend and his brother when they were just children.
And I'm not saying Garp has made horrible decisions but he has made horrible decisions and Dragon should hit his own dad with Sabo's metal pipe.

This may sound strange. But Jason would've been a bomb grandpa to his grandkids. Yk that one grandpa who has the most gut wrenching, earth-shattering stories which will be said in such a calm tone, and to which his grandkids would just go "???" Yes. Jason is that grandpa.
I mean, even in canon, bro legit had a vision of himself being an old man yapping stories to his grandchildren and they were telling him to stop capping, while he was just downright offended that they thought he's lying. So you just KNOW it's true 馃槶
Also, You cannot tell me Jason wouldn't be included in one of those "My grandpa in his 20's" videos to which the comments would go "I was born in the wrong generation" or "can your grandma fight?" Lmao

aro-culture-is 10 months
Note
Not an Aro-culture-is thing but I do have a question you might be able to answer? Is there an aromantic/asexual term for this: AroAce but if I wasn鈥檛 I would be gay? It might just be homoplatonic or homoaesthetic but idk if there was a term for it that relates to being AroAce. Thanks! <3
possibly you might vibe with oriented aroace labels, like gay aroace? i'll put this out there for other folks to consider as well, but I feel like oriented terminology sounds the most applicable from my POV.
