hi :) I don't know much about frogs but saw you identify Pyxicephalus adspersus from a gif of it covered in mud and was wondering if you could explain how you did it? (since you couldn't see markings and stuff) was it just the size or does it have particular eyes or something?? thanks!
In birdwatching, there is a term for this. It is called—I shit you not—'jizz'.
When you have seen a lot of a given kind of animal, you can start to get good at identifying them based on overall appearance. In this case, it was a combination of body size, eye colour, pupil shape, head shape, and some knowledge of the ecology of these frogs, and frogs as a whole.
I then went to look up the gif's source to make sure I was right, and confirmed I was. Always important to question your IDs, even as an expert. Otherwise you are contributing to misinformation, which is science's worst enemy.

Hansa is a brand known for its attention to detail in its plush toys. So, when we found this plush in the clearance section of a garden center, we had a hell of a time trying to figure out what this animal is. Before I tell you what it's supposed to be, I want to see your guesses in the replies and reblogs.. I promise that I represents a real animal. I'll post the answer on Monday.

This lil guy was living in my wheelbarrow, hiding in a pool of water under my compost! I relocated him to the banks of the river right beside my house, where he’ll be much happier.
I think this might be a grey treefrog— you can’t see his markings well in these photos, unfortunately. Anyone more familiar with New England frog identification?
