The Last Day Part 2
Summary: the second part. You are going home, and you find the courage to ask what happens now.
Author’s Note: Looks like I might just turn this into a series. Turned it into more of a story format, hopefully it works.

The ride to the airport felt long and too short at the same time. It was getting close to saying bye to Metallica boys. Just a few more hours and you all would be home and the tour would officially be over. You kept thinking about what’s going to happen now. Like were you and James going to keep in touch? That was something you kept worrying about because you wanted to stay in touch with him even if it was just as friends. You knew that there was something there with you and him, but you just didn’t know how or if you even should put it into words.
“We’re here,” your guitarist announced, pulling you out of your tail spin of your own thoughts.
You climbed out and grabbed your bag. Turning towards the doors, you didn’t notice James coming up next to you until he was right there talking.
“Looks like you’re gonna be stuck with me for a few more hours,” he joked.
“Oh, I think it’s more like you’re stuck with me,” you shot back.
He laughed deeply, shaking his head. He opened the door for you allowing you to walk through first. The gesture seemed small on his part but large to you. You had never really had anyone who acted like a gentleman towards you all the time. Or just for the hell of it. Yeah, he and his band had pulled that prank on your last show, but it was completely in good fun. And honestly, you felt like it was his band’s way of welcoming you into the scene. After all this was your very first tour. There were bound to be more, but this was the first time actually on tour and what was considered performing professionally to the record companies.
Maybe it was a good thing that you were both from California, and that you were taking the same flight home. At least from your standpoint.
Once inside the airport, it was a lot of running to the terminal just to get to the plane on time. Mainly because Lars had gotten you guys turned around and at the wrong side of the building.
Though it wasn’t much of a worry the plane was strictly for your band and Metallica. It just felt hectic. The drummer of your band was ready to get home and see his girlfriend, and honestly you didn’t blame him. His girlfriend was a sweetheart and had been with the drummer through everything, good and bad.
“Finally,” you sighed, sitting down in the window seat.
“Yeah, if we hadn’t gotten lost,” James said, shooting a look to his drummer who just flipped James off in response.
You chuckled at their antics, knowing that as much as James and Lars argued from time to time, they teased each other relentlessly. It was like watching siblings argue. You knew that they would fight each other, but have each other’s backs without question.
“So it’s gonna be nap time in about ten minutes,” James said, turning his attention to you. “And I have been told I make an excellent pillow.”
You looked at him curiously. Was this is way of saying that he liked you? “Oh, is that so?” you asked, trying to read more into his words. “What makes you think I need a pillow?”
“Because you look like you can barely keep your eyes open,” he replied.
You wanted to correct him, but really what was the point? He was right. You barely slept the night before, and you had to be up early to get here for the plane ride home. You had probably two, maybe three, full hours of sleep in total. You had stayed up too long trying to figure out if you should open up with James or not.
“Seriously, I won’t be bothered if you fall asleep on me,” James said. “Hell, I’m probably about to fall asleep. The last night always gets to me.”
You laughed. “Well, good to know,” you replied, knowing that you were blushing just a little.

You woke up with your head on James’s shoulder and his head on yours. The flight attendant was walking down the aisle waking up the others which was the indicator that you were back in California. You were back home still with no answers to your worries.
“Hey, James,” you said, shaking him a bit to wake him up. “I think we’ve landed.”
He groaned and then stretched his arms and legs. He looked around seeing the others, grabbing their carry-ons. “Yeah, looks like it,” he said, standing up.
You grabbed your bag and followed him off the plane, wishing that this isn’t the last time you see him. Wishing you knew how to tell him your feelings without being shy. You wish you had the confidence that the girls on tour had when throwing themselves at the guys. You could get up on stage and sing in front of thousands, but confessing anything you clammed up.
Once out in front, James hailed a taxi over. “Wanna share?” he asked.
You nodded and got in. You gave your address to the driver when James allowed you to go first.
“So it was nice going on tour with you,” you said, looking over at James.
“Yeah, I could say the same about you guys. There’s not a lot of people that can keep up with us for a night, and you did it for months,” James said, laughing a little.
You looked at him, noticing that there was something on his mind.
“Can I ask you something?” you said, looking at him and pulling in all the courage you had. “Are we just going to go our separate ways or are we like friends now?”
James looked at you with a raised eyebrow. “Friends?” he asked. “That’s all you want?”
That shocked you. You hadn’t expected that response. “Well, I mean I don’t want to assume anything,” you said.
“Y/N, I have gotten to know you pretty well. You are one of the kindest, funniest, and sweetest woman that I have ever met. You have an amazing voice, and I can’t expect to just go separate paths now,” James said, looking at her intently. “I think I have fallen half in love with you already.”
“What?” you asked, shocked.
“Yeah, I kind of suck at showing it, but listen I don’t want you to think that we have to be anything other than friends if you want, but I do want to hang out with you outside of a tour and music,” James said. “Being on tour is part work and part fun. And I want to spend time with you outside of that.”
