If Ashara Dayne did sleep with anyone at the tourney, my money has always been on Brandon Stark, not his shy (and most definitely then sexually inexperienced) younger brother and you only need to look at Barbrey Ryswell (later Dustin) for confirmation.

Barbrey gave her maidenhead to Brandon. Even though it was consensual and Barbrey was attracted to him, according to Westerosi society Brandon did "dishonor" her because they weren't married. To be honest, it would not surprise me at all if Barbrey secretly hoped that Brandon would do the right thing by her the way his nephew Robb would do with Jeyne Westerling despite already being betrothed. But obviously that didn't happen, with Brandon still fully intending to follow through on his betrothal despite "dishonoring" Barbrey. I also think when it came to Ashara Brandon would have justified it on the basis that as lady-in-waiting to the future queen Ashara would likely enjoy an excellent match through Elia's influence and this was probably Ashara's thinking as well, as to why she kept quiet.

A)What do you think of the possibility of ned/ashara love given they're described as looking similar to jon/dany & we know these two will hookup, even though sansa will be his great love. Why do you think ned reacted so strongly to cat when she mentioned her name?? Also it's possible that ned never knew that ashara was pregnant as he only meets her at the end of the war. Maybe seeing ashara in love with ned, he might have tried to dishonor her & the martells tried to cover it up from rhaegar by falsely blaming Brandon( knowing the STAB bloc forming against targs). C) could be violation or Brandon just seducing ashara & then dumping her even though he's engaged to cat) could also be the one of the many reasons R crowns L( to stick it to Brandon who was right beside her "I know what u did to ashara"). I think the whole thing with barbery dustin was to let the readers know that cat dodged a bullet wrt to Brandon & Brandon's general image. Most people would assume B as A's lover, not the shy quiet Ned(except the select few inner circle). Also ned never thinks

D) badly about Brandon who apparently slept with his crush. I think N/A would be similar dynamic to jon/ygritte & upcoming j/dany dynamic- more teenage puppy lots of sex with betrayals on both sides. And J/sansa would be like ned/cat. I see similarities b/w A/N/C love triangle with dany/j/sansa. I think N/A were definitely a thing. I don't think anything happened b/w A & Brandon. I also think A is lemore.

I suppose I already right off the bat disagree with a number of assumptions going into this ask, so I'll do that and explain how this informs my own guesses of that backstory. :)

We don't actually have any evidence that Ned even had a crush on Ashara, let alone slept with her. We know that they danced together after Brandon asked Ashara because Ned was "too shy to leave his bench", not "too shy to ask his crush" to dance. We know the rumors about them started because he returned the sword to Starfall after killing her brother. If Ned had had a crush on Ashara let alone slept with her, you'd think Robert would mention that to him before he brings up some peasant woman named Wylla? Ned literally never thinks about her EVER. The only one spreading that information as fact is a twelve-year-old nephew who never met her and is also spreading blatantly false information about Jon's mother being Wylla. Hmm.

We do not know that Jon and Dany are going to hook up. The fact that the show went that route makes it show canon, not book canon, and we know they were willing to be Very Flexible with shifting storylines around.

Ashara has a vague resemblance with Dany through the purple eyes, but her hair is actually dark, unlike that of her nephew Edric Dayne. The visual you get with her and Brandon might as well be reminiscent of Brandon and dark-haired Barbrey, you know? Less so of Jon and Dany.

Ashara was not the paramour of Lewyn Martell. That one is described as "an old woman now", so her identity is known and she is officially alive. But even that would be more credible than shy and honorable Eddard Stark having premarital sex with a highborn lady at a tourney, no matter how willing. That whole assumption is so out of character for him! We know people think it's hilariously unlikely that he fathered a bastard, and the only reason they believe it is because, well, there's a bastard that looks like him. Remove that "proof" and you have an Eddard who is exactly what is says on the tin: shy and honorable. Know who's described as "never shy about taking what he wanted"? Brandon. In the context of sleeping with a highborn maiden. Maybe it doesn't have to be as complicated as you're making it. Maybe it's as simple as Barristan thinking "Stark" dishonored Ashara and it's the one who has a history of doing exactly that.

If Ashara and Ned had parallels to Jon and Ygritte, Ashara would have forced herself on Ned and he'd have been filled with self-blame and shame. There is no "teenage puppy love", there's an abusive relationship. Which would STILL make more sense than Ned willingly having premarital sex with a highborn girl. There is no Ashara/Ned/Catelyn triangle. The whole point and irony is that the woman Ned "loved fiercely" is his sister, Jon's mother.

Not going into that bit about Rhaegar because that makes absolutely zero sense. If you think some Lord's heir assaulted your wife's lady in waiting, you don't solve that by shaming your wife and that guy's sister in a huge public scandal. Especially with fragile politics in the background.

Why do you think ned reacted so strongly to cat when she mentioned her name??

Because Catelyn is inquiring in the direction of the origins of Jon Snow, and Ned is panicking. If he had had a relationship with Ashara, nothing would be easier or smarter than opening up about it to Catelyn in this moment. She is clearly trying to forge a connection there, to find common ground and ease the tension between them. Instead, Ned shuts it down harshly, demands her sources and then shuts those down, too. That's not the actions of a man grieving his lost love with the wife he clearly already cares for. This is a man having a knee-jerk panic-driven reaction to make sure he never has to answer any questions in this direction that might lead to revealing his secret or getting caught in contradictions. Because, you know, Lyanna. Being the mother of his fake bastard. The whole point.

I also think A is lemore.

I do agree with that, at least!

Basically, no, I just think it's incredibly unlikely that Ned ever slept with Ashara, and questionable if he ever had a crush on her. Brandon sleeping with a highborn maiden at a tourney is far more likely, because he has a history of doing that. If a Stark is the father of Ashara's child, it's going to be Brandon. Which is something Ned may never have even found out about. A secret he is likely privy to is Ashara's involvement in the baby switch and her caring for Aegon. Why else would the Dayne's be covering for Ned when it comes to Jon Snow's parentage, unless they are tied together in secrecy?

Trying to turn that into evidence that Jon and Dany are going to be a thing, let alone a "puppy love" thing, or that there will be a love triangle of some kind is a bit of a stretch.

My opinion on some asoiaf ships

Jal ->

* They aren't gonna be endgame. Val is kinda a blank slate, even Harry Hardyng has more personality and he only appeared in a sample chapter + Jon dreams of an idyllic life with Val, but based on his own tastes, in his own image of what Val should be, and this imagined future is shattered the moment Val declares that Shireen, an innocent child, should be killed. Jon is rightfully disgusted "this was a Val that Jon had never seen before", this Val is the real one, not the one he had imagined, and Jon isn't attracted to the real Val

Stardyng ->

* I kinda ship them. Listen Harry isn't perfect, far from it, but he isn't significantly older than Sansa, he didn't abuse her, he didn't sexualised her (guys she's 13), he geniunely admires her qualities (her intelligence and humor), he apologized for his classism (and he hates LF so it's no wonder he didn't want to marry LF's "bastard daughter")

Starkpoole ->

* They're perfect, okay ? They need to heal and get justice and then to be happy together in Winterfell thank you very much

Ned x Ashara ->

* I'm of the opinion Ashara was Ned's teenage love. Cat was the love of his life, but in my headcanon he geniunely cared about Ashara and he repressed his memories of her. Just like his eldest daughter, Ned repressed a lot of his trauma because it hurts him too much. He only thinks of Lyanna when he's triggered by traumatic events like Sansa pleading for Lady or when he's injured and anesthetized by the milk of the poppy and he barely thinks of his own father and brother so it wouldn't be surprising

Jaime x Addam ->

* Why not ? Childhood friends and sparring mates. He's the only speaker Jaime trusts with his secret

Arianne x Daemon ->

* I don't mind them they seem happy together (though it's complicated since Arianne is the crown princess of Dorne and Daemon's a bastard)

Sansa x Dickon ->

* We know next to nothing about Dickon but why not perhaps it could work in an au

Robb x Jeyne ->

* Perhaps Robb is Sleeping Beauty. He's the one with the evil step-mom who wants to kill him and his family. Old Fairy Walder Frey is offended by the Stark-Tully family and curses 16 YO Robb. Seventh Fairy Edmure tries to save the day but it doesn't work. Anyway. Robb was young, he made a ton of mistakes, especially towards his own family, but he didn't want any of this, he didn't want to be king, he wasn't ready, he wanted to save Jeyne's honor, he wanted to do the right thing (unlike the show version). I want Jeyne to make it at the end but I'm pessimistic. They deserved better. I kinda ship them

I don’t really have many OTPs, in fact I only have two and I have ships I’m willing to tolerate otherwise the number of fics I can read are so small.

OTP:

Iron Husbands ( my two faves who love and support each other but also have a complicated relationship)

Bellamy x Raven (ditto)

Ships I tolerate:

Sansa x Jeyne (they’re cute but they’re kids)

Catelyn x Ned (Catelyn loves him forcing me to put up with him)

Elia x Arthur (Elia stans like this ship and I like Elia content so here I am)

Raven x Shaw (he’s OK but he died so quickly so I don’t really care about him)

Tony x Bruce (it’s sweet I guess and at least the fandom doesn’t pretend that Bruce is Tony’s best friend as hard as other fanbases)

Cersei x Jaime (this one is actually close to a NOTP but my girl loves him so I’m forced to acknowledge his existence)

Swanqueen (I ended up hating Emma but the stans made the best Regina fics so here I am)

Laurel x Tommy (he was better than Oliver so here I am)

Westallen (Iris is cute and she chose to marry a shoe. My suffering knows no end)

Bonnie and whatever boyfriend they stick her with (I like reading Bonnie fics *shrug*)

Jonerys (probably the worst ship on the show), Jorah x Daenerys (gross), Daenerys x Daario (gross and dull), Daenerys x Drogo (probably the worst Dany ship. She deserved better), Daensa (the most boring femslash ship in the series)

Olicity (I don’t have time to explain how much this sucks)

Sansa x paedophiles. Arya x grown men and women

Ironstrange, Winteriron, T’challa x Tony (if I see one more fic about how Tony is so smart and special I will explode), Pepperony (no chemistry, bad writing, turned Tony into unredeemable mess in Endgame -1000/10)

Bellarke (probably the worst ship I have ever seen. I hate) and Clexa (awful, terrible, yuck, wash your hands Clarke bitch. If Lexa didn’t get shot she’d probably get a vaginal infection), Raven x Wick

Lyanna x Rhaegar (gross), Brandon x Ashara (boring), Ned x Ashara (they won’t shut the fuck up about Catelyn), Jon Connington x Rhaegar (the only thing they have in common is their lack of respect for Elia), Aegon x Rhaenys (1. How do you have a bad bitch like Visenya as your future wife and then marry her lame ass sister? 2. Elia would never marry her children to each other)

Zutara (the stans love demonising Aang and pretending like Zuko suffered more than he has. I hate)

honestly if ned was with ashara and he impregnated her, i'd be so pissed because by the time the books start, she becomes so irrelevant to him like damn you had a stillborn baby how are you completely over it?

It’s the biggest hole in any Ned + Ashara theory for me. Throughout all of AGoT, Ned does not think of her even once or react to Cersei mentioning her. Ashara would have been more than just a fling; she would have had his child and she died in the most tragic of circumstances. She threw herself off a tower after she lost their kid and Ned killed her brother, but none of this remotely lingers with him in any way whatsoever? It’s not even Ned avoiding the thought of her; she simply doesn’t exist in his inner monologue at all.

Compare it to Cat and Brandon. He was merely her betrothed and they had none of the apparent history of Ned/Ashara. Yet 15 years and a happy marriage later, Cat thinks of him frequently and with genuine feeling. Her throat still goes tight at the mention of how he died when talking to Jaime. Cersei outright taunts Ned about Ashara’s death and he doesn’t so much as blink. A man like Ned wouldn’t just forget an old love who was pregnant with his child and killed herself in part due to his actions. How does she not haunt him every day? How does Jaime sitting his butt on the Iron Throne for five minutes bother him more than the death of his lover and stillborn baby?

And then there’s just a bit that niggles at me but isn’t really a factual reason against it. The great tragedy of Ned and Cat (aside from, you know, getting murdered and all their kids supposedly dying) is that Cat is haunted by the shadow of a romantic love that does not exist. It kills her to think Ned loved Jon’s mother more than he loved her, that for this woman he would bring so much humiliation and pain to Cat. She doesn’t know that it’s actually love for his sister. To find out that there was never anyone else but her is the saddest, most bittersweet thing ever and I see Jon’s parentage mystery just as much about Ned as it is him. While I don’t think it undermines his love for Cat, it just doesn’t have the same effect if the reveal is like, “Haha, yeah, I never cheated but you’re right I did love Ashara, we did hook up like everyone says, she did have my kid- it just wasn’t Jon.” It just works so much better for me from both a writing and audience perspective if Ashara doesn’t factor in at all. And it’s not like we don’t have a far more plausible and less convoluted candidate in Brandon (that scoundrel! 😩) so I don’t see the need for Ned at all, beyond a neat red herring for Jon’s mother.

So I read this post today and it said:

In a modern AU where Ashara is alive, Ned would never be with Catelyn.

Just saying.

And I did not tag the person or repost it because I don't want them to feel attacked eventhough I feel attacked by their post😂

So reasons for Ned to be with Ashara that we actually now about.

She was hot

Yeah that's kind of it, because we don't know anything about Ashara. She could have been for all we know a mean, dump person who's just hot. She just has a Fandom created persona. (That I actually like (if it's not used to justify anti Cat) but is not necessarily the most creative one in my opinion)

Now comparing this to why Ned should be with Cat

She is hot (she is nor necessarily called the most beautiful woman of them all but people often talk about her beauty and that's the Milf Version of her)

her hair is amazing

she is strong

she has a strong sense of family

she is smart

THEY CANONLY LOVE EACHOTHER AND HAVE A STRONG MARRIAGE

They managed to build this strong marrige on a foundation that was bad (Jon/Jons mother/secrets/being pushed in a role you weren't prepared for/being strangers)

imagine what would happen when they would build a marrige on a better one

There are probably even more reason that are supported by source material but this is a spontaneous post

You can ship what you like but I don't like it when people dismiss 15 years of marriage for "yeah Ned thought this girl was hot once more than a decade ago and wanted to dance with her" With "just saying"

If I would create a epic/tragic Lovestory with every person I thought was hot at 18 I'd have a problem.

And I know it says modern AU but Ashara (Fandom created version) is always this really wild person that takes life as it goes and likes to party and goes on adventures and doesn't like to stay at one place. That just doesn't fit with Neds personality. He is a calm person that likes his solitude and staying where he is/belongs to.

In a modern Au Ned and Ashara would want different things in life, things that are not compatible with each other.

I actually think in modern AU Ned/Cat would be even stronger because there (in most cases) would not be the Jon thing between them. And there would be more healthy communication between them about topics that in the timeperiod of ASOIF/GOT where more "hush hush" and "let's not talk about it"

Lyanna "Homewrecker" Stark

I hate it when people defend Lyanna, saying she was too young to be held accountable for her actions and painting her out to be this innocent saint Lyanna. Yet people hate on Sansa Stark who was literally 11 years old during the start of asoiaf. Fucking hypocrites. Lyanna was selfish and a homewrecker with no smidge of honor at all. She helped rip the realm apart. She destroyed more marriage (or betrothals) than just Elia and Rhaegar's but also Catelyn and Brandon's, Cersei and Robert's, and possibly Ned and Ashara's (and maybe Lady Dustin who lost her new husband during the rebellion). Some of you may ship Rhaegar's face with Robert's warhammer. My otp next to that would be Lyanna x Death bed.

I mean, Rhaegar was the worst but Lyanna was NOT blameless. Stop using her age as an excuse, she was around 14-16. Hell, in my country even 12 year old's could be jailed, age can't always be used as an excuse.

Looks like your Ashara Dayne post really triggered Ned X Cat shippers. I even got an anon ask from one of them because I ship both Ned X Cat and Ned X Ashara, they wondered how I could ship both of them.

Really? I didn't even tag NedCat, neither tagged Cat to not have such problem. I am pretty sure I tagged "anti NedCat" to be safe. AshaNed is a preference I have, but NedCat is also fine? I mean.

It is okay to like NedCat, but they ended together because of *westerosi politics*, this is not me saying, this is canon, you know? During Robert's Rebellion. Brandon, Lyanna, Benjen.

I dont see how such a thing could happen in a modern AU where all of this is like.... not that important and probably wouldn't happen?

Obviously, you can make an aristocratic AU, or any other way. Everything is free on fanfiction.

But like. In my opinion if Ned could have chosen between Ashara and Cat, he would have chosen Ashara, because he fell for her in the Tourney. He loved her first. Also canonic.

These two couples have compleatly different romantic themes in canon.

NedCat: Slow Burn, Arranged Marriage, strangers-to-friends-lovers and others.

AshaNed: Love at first sight. First crush. Tragic ending. Families at war. Love wasn't enough. Others.

Ned loved Catelyn with all his heart ,and Cat loved Ned with her whole soul. I am not someone who deny that. But this love and attraction was something that have taken years to develop and grow.

AshaNed was something innocent. A first crush that could have turned into something deeper if everything turned out different. If Brandon didn't die, if Lyanna was still alive, if Ashara didn't commit suicide *or faked her death. Book readers know what I mean*

I like the idea of what AshaNed could have been.

Of course the starklings would be really different, but this doesn't make me dislike the couple in any way.

Also, if they dislike AshaNed that much, they should just block the tags and they wouldn't see my post. After all, I tag my posts properly.

Cat/Brandon

I'm a bit meh about them, mostly because we know so little about Brandon. Like, he was taller than Ned (well, who wasn't), he was hotheaded, and overall he seemed to be a northern version of Robert? Which is not particularly impressive, if you ask me. I mean, Brandon died young, so maybe he would've turned out to be a better person, but eh.

Sometimes I see people put great importance into the fact that Cat was in love with him before Ned. But I don't read that as the great love story. Cat was young and dutiful, and it seems to me, she was a bit like Sansa in this aspect, as in she loved Brandon because brides are supposed to love their future husbands. Most of Cat's mentions of him are about doing her duty in the first place. And anyway, Brandon was handsome and confident, they knew each other and were betrothed for years — it would be strange if they didn't fall in love. And definitely, this first young love doesn't negate or diminish Cat's love for Ned. It just shows that she was a normal teenager who had a safe and happy life by Westerosi standards, until Rhaegar and his dad fucked everyone over.

Ned/Ashara

Oh my god, why is that even a thing? I mean, sure, to each their own, no judging, but why? She has even less personality than Brandon and Lyanna, and that's literally her most striking character trait. Shipping Ned with idk Jory would've been more interesting — at least they interacted in the book, and Jory isn't a cardboard Elizabeth Taylor's figure sticking out of the text.

Ok, fine, apparently I have strong opinions on that matter. As you all can see, I'm not a big fan of ships, in which one character consist only of the name. I don't find it interesting and honestly don't see much sense in it, if we aren't talking about PWP. Also, this particular pairing often has a weird undertone of anti-Cat sentiment. Like when this supposed romance is framed as Ned's only real love in the canon, with Catelyn being a poor substitute or something. And this is plain wrong. Canon Ned Stark loved one (1) woman, and her name was Catelyn.

Sansa/LF

This is really brutal, lol.

Weirdly enough, while LF is a great character, I have the same problem with this ship as I have with Ned/Ashara: it's too often tied in with presenting wishful thinking and fanons as canon.

Are Sansa's relationship with LF complex and engaging for the reader? Of course. Is he her mentor figure? Obviously. Is there any ground for shipping? Everything can be the ground for shipping, and I'm not shippers' mum to judge them. Is Sansa as evil as LF and complicit in his crimes? NO.

They can be Bonnie and Clyde in as many transformative works as you want, but in the books and the show, Sansa is LF's victim. He destroyed her life, she doesn't trust him, doesn't want his kisses, and isn't really privy to his plans. LF uses her and doesn't consider her as his equal. And I'm going to rejoice when in the books Sansa will make him pay for everything as she did in the show. And maybe that will put at rest some extremely annoying "theories" in Sansa's tag.

Theon/anyone of my choice (because Theon can get anyone he wants)

Going to take Sansa/Theon because I already got Theon/Robb in another ask. So, basically, my feelings about them can be described with this gif:

And I will forever laugh about the fact that this pairing is 90% based on actors' chemistry, and it never was intentional. Their power!

I also wish more people appreciated Theon/Cat, because Theon definitely had hots for her, and that was the main source of Robb’s teenage angst.

Hell I have even seen toxic catelyn stans posting bullshit in the ned x ashara tag. And the Jon x Val tag gets the shitty toxic shit from Jonsa and asshole jonerys.
