Holocaust education failed when people went away thinking that the Holocaust

a) Was a surprise

b) Wasn't preventable

c) Can never happen again.

They also seem to think that they would be the heroes saving people and fighting back in the scenario, but y'know....those people were a tiny minority. The majority of people truly believed that Jews and Rroma were a disease on their society and wanted them exterminated. And yes, they believed these things with sugar-coated social justice terms.

Jews weren't Christ-killers anymore, they were "greedy outsiders who have dual-loyalty and corrupt the economy, disenfranchising the poor."

Rroma weren't devil-worshipping heathens anymore, they were "wandering people with no morals who prey on vulnerable people and trespass."

Killing and torturing disabled people wasn't exorcism anymore, it was "furthering society by eliminating the burdens on it" and "sparing those poor souls the horror of living" and "advancing scientific research."

Many progressive and leftist and liberal people ended up being complicit and even active members of the Nazi party because of the way the xenophobic and bigoted ideologies of the parties were painted in "progressive" vocabulary.

Think about how many times you've uncritically reblogged and shared posts about the "global elite" or "secret pedophile ring" or "X country eliminated Down Syndrome" or "scientists are so close to finding the autism gene" or "religion is poison" or "overpopulation".

You are not immune.

Not everyone may have personally manned the gas chambers, but they certainly didn't stand in Hitler's way.

Holocaust education isn't enough until it teaches that.

Begging queer gentiles to understand that the centuries-to-millennia old link between queerphobia and antisemitism is what played a major role in Hitler targeting queer people. Jews have been blamed and killed for "corrupting gentiles into homosexuality" and have long been the subject of transphobic and intersexist conspiracies. Queer people being targeted was largely rooted in antisemitism.

Magnus Hirschfeld, who often is cited as evidence that the Nazis targeted queer people first, was a Jew! Many Jewish people were prominent in the early queer liberation movement in Berlin. So much pro-LGBT research and understanding, as well as development of successful SRS techniques, came from Jewish scientists and doctors who were actively fighting for queer rights.

These Jewish pioneers of queer liberation and trans healthcare are the people whose books were burned when the Nazis came for the Institut für Sexualwissenschaft.

Many queer people claim the end of the Holocaust did not bring liberation for queer people. While this is true to an extent, it is intentionally misleading.

Antisemitism and anti-Romani racism (because you never seem to remember Romani people were also main targets) neither started nor ended with the Holocaust. After "liberation" both groups still faced subhuman treatment (many dying in displaced persons camps after surviving death camps), social and legal discrimination, cultural genocide, violence, expulsion, and murder for their ethnic identities.

The narrative that things were magically better is just that: a narrative created by allied nations to sweep their culpability and failings under the rug.

You cannot separate Jewish people and queer people into two distinct camps that never touch, it's not only ahistorical and erases the existence of queer Jews in history as well as Jewish contributions to sexual liberation, but it also contributes to the modern alienation and exclusion that queer Jews face from the queer community.

You need to stop with the stories, plot lines, background info, and such in your works that are things like:

The Spanish Inquisition was really about vampires trying to find witches that could control them story line thanks to True Blood.

There are shit-ton more examples of this kind of thing and it is disgusting.

The Holocaust and the Atlantic Slave Trade specifically in regards to United States part of it all and the horrific treatment of enslaved African peoples tend the most commonly used ones, I have found.

That said it does not mean other ethnic cleansing and genocides are not used as well as other major events and tragedies for very specific marginalized and/or minority groups.

These types of stories devalue our on going pain and trauma as well as degrade the memories of both the living and the dead who suffered through those horrors and the many who did not live to see it end.

Our trauma is not a sandbox that you get to play, our history is not something you to play pretend with.

All of us from the various communities that survived these atrocities, these crimes against humanity, these terrors we all each and every one us carry still the scars. Not just scars, but also still healing wounds.

We carry in us the stories of our people, the joys and the sorrows, the hopes and the fears, and we carry the dead so that they may live on in some small way.

You have no right to that, you have no right to pain, to our joy, and most importantly you have no right to recast the reason for it all.

I am so sick of it and it needs to stop.

And this is not even delving into deeper how deeply gross so many of the implications of these storylines are if you think about for just a little bit and the nasty stereotypes they help to reinforce.

Legalisation normalises prostitution. For example, we had a TV show that was called ‘Pimp My Brothel’ where a brothel keeper who’s now in jail for human trafficking went into brothels to tell them what they could do better.

Legalisation brings more capitalism into prostitution because the women are the product and are only there to serve the client. So, legalisation strengthens the client’s rights. We even had a court case. There was a girl, I think she was 19, and her punter had not orgasmed and went to court over that. She had to pay him money because he wasn’t able to orgasm with her.

This is what legalisation does."

Edit: just want to make it clear that I am of the opinion that BG3 itself is less racist than, for instance, Curse of Strahd. This moment when you learn that Adventurine is Romani and that his entire planet is named with a word that in both english and slavic are considered slurs against Romani people... I guess the galaxy at large is anti-Roma if they called that planet Sigonia-IV. If Hoyo doesn't give us info that this planet was actually named differently by the people living on it that wasn't named a giant slur, then I'll have to assume that Hoyo is ok with naming a whole ass planet full of Romani-based people with a slur used against those people. And it's bad. At least Adventurine's clan is named somewhat nicely, but what does it change when every single one of them was killed and Adventurine is the only survivor?

I can't shake the feeling it's a very racist portrayal, because the meta message basically assumes that a Roma-based character can't have anything akin to a normal life. That they have to suffer, lose everybody, and become a tragic character "working" for a huge space corporation that couldn't care less about people. Only to ultimately "die" for the sake of said corporation and possibly never be able to come back from the state of spiritual death. And even if he managed, he knows that all his achievements were monopolized by that corporation and that he has virtually nothing to his name and nobody to come back to. The only positive is that he is supposedly blessed with luck by Gaiathra.

Don't take me wrong disgussing the tragedy that happens to minority groups is important and should be done in media, but there is also a point often brought up that if your group is constantly represented as struggling to get by and opressed and nothing else then people start to internalize the idea that this is the only way those characters and people they're based on can live. That there is no normalcy that they have in life, so no normalcy is expected from their portrayals. This happened to queer people. We all grew tired of being constantly only represented as a group whose only point in the story is to be visibly opressed and that we never got a chance to have normal lives as well.

If he comes back, will Hoyo give him a better life? We will see.

Still... the implications are so ugh. I can't speak more about it as I'm not Roma and I definitely don't understand the stuff enough to say anything substancial, but this just looks kind of bad as it is now.

I have a sincere question. All of those Europeans shared stories of Roma people stealing from them, vandalising, committing social aid fraud, making their children beg on the streets, and seriously abusing their relatives. My question is: is it true that Roma communities are as dysfunctional as portrayed in that Reddit post? And what are the reasons for this dysfunction?

no we don't spend our time stealing and vandalising and we don't commit social aid fraud lmao if we did I would be less poor 😌 we don't do those things more than the rest of the working class, the thing is that Roma are disproportionately concentrated in the working class and those crimes are poverty related, right? So Romani poverty is more visible. And the reason we are so impoverished (about 80% of European Romani people live below the poverty line iirc) is because of the centuries of slavery and social marginalisation we went through, and because each time we had money there was another massacre against us during which Europeans took our money and assets. Like the only thing I know for sure about my family during the Holocaust is that before, we had money, after we had nothing.

For children begging, that's a result of that intergenerational poverty created by centuries of exclusion and marginalisation. Like I begged in the subway once as a teen, that wasn't because I was Romani but because I had no money. However Romani children beggars are even more visible because a lot of them are also victims of human trafficking, and Romani people are among the first victims of human trafficking in Europe.

And for the intrafamily violence, yeah there is a lot of that. I am not excusing it of course, I got some of it myself. A lot of Romani people have untreated mental illnesses and we have a lot of intergenerational trauma and no coping mechanisms so our families are messy.

You can see that all of the things you listed, they are the biggest stereotypes associated with Romani people in Europe, except that they are all poverty-related and a result of anti-romani racism. But instead of acknowledging their responsibility, Europeans blame our living conditions on us. They say 'roma actually love being poor, that's their culture', they essentialize it that way because it's easier for them than to properly acknowledge how badly they treated us

genuine question: if devin wrote dick as romani in a hurtful way, why does fandom seem so intent to keeping him romani while decrying the writer that made him romani in the first place? like, if it came from such racist/hurtful archetypes then why cling to it so much? Ok so the thing is bad rep is worse than no rep-yes but erasure is worse too so the solution isn’t to erase but to fix it and there has been genuine effort in canon and by Romani people in the fandom to address Dicks rep. While it’s undeniably rooted in some stereotypes there’s also no denying how important Dicks character is. He’s undeniably the most popular Roma character of all time and that’s an issue when people won’t acknowledge he’s Roma. He’s multifaceted and smart and brave and complicated and undeniably good ect these are really good characteristics for any character let alone one to represent any group of people. The best thing dc could do is either hire Roma writers (or Roma editors/sensitivity readers/ect) they need Roma people in the workroom not less Roma characters in comics. Because at the end of the day If we wait for perfect rep before we acknowledge it we’re not going to get it and that goes for any marginalized identity. People cannot know other’s peoples lived experience-which is why we need to push for our voices in the room. Almost all the diverse characters in comics nowadays started as stereotypes and were stereotypes til someone said no and chose to do the work so they could write them better or at least try-that’s what needs to be done. I think it’s funny (and this isn’t at you) that with Dick given his importance given his cultural influence people push for erasure due to some writing flaws when that’s not and never been the case canon or fanon for other characters I mean have you read early black panther? It’s not good. I think people need to reflect if they actually have an issue with how he’s written or if they not only don’t want to view him as Roma but don’t want to put in their own work of looking past the stereotypes either. Also tbh while you’ll see people tote that Roma people don’t like his rep (which I’m not saying there’s none who don’t) the posts that are most commonly referenced are by non Romani people (and one is by a total freak so yeah). In current canon Dick is probably about 1/4th “ethnically” Roma (though that hardly matters he’s Roma hes roma like. As for your other question/point to me the difference between hcing a character as a different race vs like Dick is the push to view white characters as non white instead of actually making fan content of canon non white characters? Like it’s almost a white guilt thing w Tim (this is not at fans of color) but like you want to feel good about stanning characters of color but you also. Don’t actually stan a character of color (like Tim or Jason for instance) so you just hc them as non white (and yes often stereotypically) instead of like reading a single comic w Duke in it. Like racebending is fine and I think it’s good but when done by white fans it’s often actually done to like justify their distance from actual canon characters of color. Like I’m glad you think Tim’s Asian but you still won’t draw fanart of the batfam w Duke in it in 2022 yknow? You still prioritize Jason over Cass but you think he’s Latine, you hc Steph as ambiguously brown but you still characterize Damian in a racist manner, ect. Does that make sense I’m not actually sure I’m explaining well. Oh and in the case you specified Dick is canonically non white wheras Tim isn’t-and it should be noted that white isn’t the baseline-While no one’s saying writers had any intentions he was never stated to be white before-him being “retconned” as Roma isn’t really fair or true he was simply revealed to be so as again white cannot be treated as the inherent norm (nor should heterosexuality and being cisgender or able bodied) I’m not saying you’re wrong but I think it’s important not to think about that kind of stuff in those terms if that makes sense. Edit : adding on an important response from @royharper : the bottom line is that people who aren't roma should not be speaking on his identity as a rom because they have no idea what roma identity fully entails. i've seen people claim "he's not culturally connected, therefore he can't be roma" or "he can be white and roma, he's not a person of color" when neither of these things are true. for one, while devin is inconsistent in her writing, dick is shown to be raised within the culture as far back as her titans run in the late 90's, in which he is shown to be speaking romanes with his father in a dream sequence that is heavily implied to be a flashback of sorts, and as well lian states that dick can speak romanes when discussing the various languages that her dad, aunts, and uncles can speak. language /is/ culture for us, it's not something that any outsider can just learn super easily. it was really strange that she retconned this herself by the time gotham knights was written a few years later through the character yoska, who attempts to speak romanes with dick and finds that he can't understand him, however using this, along with the orientalist stereotypes devin tried to impose on both dick and yoska when writing about roma identity, as an excuse to say that dick is not "really a rom" is racist. outsiders do not understand the nuances of roma identity enough to make that judgement, and no, wikipedia is not an accurate source for information about roma. touching on the idea that roma can be white, this is a misconception. while outsiders may be folded into the community by marriage or adoption, this is not very common because we don't tend to marry or adopt outside of our communities. furthermore, roma is not an ethnicity. roma is our race. our ethnicities are our clans. there are roma with pale skin, there are even roma that appear white, but they are still racially roma and are still subject to racial discrimination. in response to the idea that there is an outpouring of roma fans who don't want dick to be roma at all, this simply isn't true. that rumor was originally started by someone who was outed as a racefaker, and is perpetuated by white fans who seek to weaponize this perspective to justify their whitewashing and racism. i've known more roma who were, while still critical of devin's orientalism/antiromanyism, ecstatic to have a roma comic character who actually speaks the language, as in comparison to doctor doom and the maximoff twins, who are arguably just as popular, who do not speak romanes in comics, or have only spoken one or two words of the language. dick is important in terms of representation for this fact alone. i can't fathom the amount of people who are not roma who think that just because roma characters are often subject to stereotypical writing that it's somehow better to simply erase their racial identity all together rather than doing their own research to avoid stereotypes when portraying the characters and pushing for these companies to start hiring roma creatives as we do with /every other character of color because not a SINGLE character of color in comics history has been entirely free of racist, stereotypical writing or of colorism and whitewashing in official artwork/. and yet you don't see people pushing for other characters of color to be made white. it's really very telling to me. and just for the record, since i know this is for some reason a popular talking point, dick's race was not retconned after devin initially wrote him as roma. his race has been referenced across numerous other comics written by other writers over the years, most notably tim seeley in his run of nightwing rebirth. while i have issues with seeley's characterization of dick, and he tends to sexualize him just as much if not more than devin imo, dick's racial identity plays a big role in the raptor arc. stop acting like devin was the only writer to ever write dick as a rom and that it was never seen or heard of again in canon after she stopped working on nightwing.
