torment / chapter 3

For the next two nights, my dreams were plagued by Michael. I couldn’t stop thinking about his hand gripping the back of my chair, his hair falling into his face, the gold chain peeking out from under his shirt, and how it would look against bare skin, his or mine…
Stupid. I’d barely said a word to this guy, and I was dreaming about him? Like some vapid schoolgirl with a crush. It wasn’t like me at all, I felt like a different person. Something about his eyes, the way they pierced right through me like a laser, made me feel exposed.
I decided that morning to put him out of my mind completely, or do my very best to. The warlocks being on civil terms with the witches didn’t mean anything. Trying to reassure myself, I thought, I may never see him again. I ignored how that thought made my stomach flip, dread gnawing at my insides.
“What has you so upset?” Penny, the witch who stayed in the room next door to mine, asked. “I could feel it through the wall.” She plopped down onto my bed with concern plastered across her face.
Penny was an empath to extreme levels. She felt what you felt, exactly how you felt it. When she was younger, she told me she had to avoid crowded rooms because the mix of emotions made her vomit. Now, with years at the Academy under her belt, she’d learned to control it – but somehow my emotions had knocked a hole through the drywall and her willpower.
“I’m fine.” I replied.
Penny frowned. “That’s bullshit, and you know I know. What’s going on in your head, Ly?”
I sighed. “The warlocks. I can’t figure them out, or what they’re up to. Makes me uneasy.”
I figured that wasn’t totally a lie. A half-truth – I was worried about the warlocks. I just failed to tell her it was one in particular that was bothering me.
“I feel you,” Penny said casually, and I smiled because she did, literally. “But if Cordelia thinks this is a good idea, I trust her judgment. You should too.”
She was right. But something about the whole thing just felt off.
“I had my doubts,” Cordelia appeared in the doorway, giving us both a fright. Our Supreme had a habit of sneaking up on people.
“I understand your apprehension. But I think that unity is in the coven’s best interests. I wouldn’t have invited them otherwise.” Cordelia said.
“I know. We trust you.” I nodded. I hated the idea of Cordelia thinking we didn’t have faith in her. She was the best woman and witch I’d ever known.
“You two better get ready for lessons.” Cordelia concluded, before drifting out of the room.
After hours of potion-making and practising tricky incantations, we had finished up for the day and a few girls were lounging in the sitting room. I was playing cards with Zoe, a witch-version of those memory games you play in grade school. Instead of guessing with memory, I guessed with divination. It wasn’t my strong suit; she beat me four to one.
The rest of the girls stepped into the room, followed by Cordelia. We all sat up straighter, knowing something was coming. She only called all of us into one room if there was an important announcement to make.
“My girls. Ariel and I have had several meetings over the last few days. We think what we all need is some fun,” She smiled.
We all paid more attention.
“Next Saturday, we are attending a ball. A reconciliation ball, for witches and warlocks to come together and enjoy themselves. A celebration.” Even Cordelia looked excited as she explained.
Girls squealed and immediately burst into chatter we pounced at the chance to get dressed up.
“We’re taking a trip into town tomorrow, after your morning lessons. All of you will pick out a dress, or suit if you prefer. I want you all to visualise your truest form, and show up as them. Pick whatever makes you feel most like your most beautiful, confident, powerful selves.” Cordelia said.
---
“Does this look ‘me’ enough?” Zoe asked, holding a lilac blazer up to her slender frame.
“I think you’ll look stunning in anything.” I assured her. We’d been into three shops already and I still hadn’t found the perfect dress.
“I don’t know why I’m even bothering. Nobody has asked me.” Penny lamented as she tried on another jumpsuit.
There was gossip that some witches had been asked to the ball already. Apparently, some warlocks had sent notes, enchanted to sing on arrival. The peak of romance, as far as the younger witches were concerned.
“Who cares? We’re going together anyway. Date or no date, we go together. Sisters.” Zoe asserted, rubbing Penny’s shoulder.
Flicking through another rack, my fingers landed on something red and velvet. I pulled the gown out to get a better look, purely indulging a fantasy that it might suit me. It was strapless, structured around the bodice with a flowing skirt.
“Lyla! Try it on.” Zoe exclaimed, shoving me into the change room.
“I doubt it’ll even fit…and red really isn’t my colour.” I sighed. I stepped out once I’d slipped it on, needing Zoe’s help to zip me up.
Looking up into my reflection, I couldn’t help the smile that spread across my face. “Is it too much? It’s a little bold for me.”
“You look hot! You have to get it, Ly. I’m convinced nothing else will look this good. It’s like it was made for you.” Penny grinned from behind me, squeezing my hips.
---
In the week leading up to the ball, the doorbell rang constantly. Each time, a girl would answer the door and close it with the hugest grin, pleased with their date. Each time, my irrational heart raced, hoping it would be someone for me. Each time, I was disappointed.
The dreams about Michael didn’t stop. I dreamed that he tapped on my window, climbed inside my room, and asked me softly. In my dreams, he was gentle and tender, not tense and severe like he acted at breakfast. In my dream, he whispered it, begging me to be his. Michael’s lips against the shell of my ear sent shivers through my entire body. When I woke up, I swore I could still feel his breath against my neck.
When the doorbell rang on Friday morning, I pitied the girl who was about to be asked to the ball this last minute. It was almost lunch time, but I hadn’t had classes that day, so I was studying in the sitting room in my pyjamas. Annoyed at the disruption, I moped over to the door.
“Hey, who are you looking for, I’ll go get h-” I was cut off as I opened the door and met his eyes.
Michael stood in the middle of the front patio, holding a thin black box.
“Michael – hi,” I stumbled over my words, suddenly embarrassed of my pyjamas so late in the day. He must think I have no life. “So, who are you here to see? Most of them are upstairs.” I crossed my arms over my chest.
“You, actually.” He said evenly. My eyes must have widened, because he licked his lips, “Are you surprised to see me?”
“I guess. I just wasn’t expecting it.” I shrugged, feigning nonchalance.
“Why? Who were you expecting?” His expression darkened, a crease forming in his brow. I could feel his walls going up…was he jealous?
“Nobody.” I said quickly. I didn’t want to waste an opportunity to see him, even if he made me uneasy. He was magnetic – it felt like there was a rope tied around me, pulling me closer to him.
His smile returned, smug. “Well, in that case, you’re coming with me to the ball.” He declared.
I raised an eyebrow. “And you’re not asking, just telling?”
“Precisely,” He said smoothly. He held out the thin black box. I reached out, and his fingertips grazed mine. I stared at his hand for a beat too long before I took the gift.
“You didn’t have to get anything. I can’t accept this.” I rushed.
“You haven’t even opened it yet.” He spoke softly. His intense gaze made my cheeks hot.
I pried the box open carefully, and saw the glint of cubic zirconia in the sunlight. The wind was almost knocked out of me. A thin chain of gems formed the most delicate choker I’d ever seen. I imagined it wrapped around my throat, and then I imagined Michael helping me clasp it, his fingertips grazing my neck. I shivered.
“Michael. I can’t take this. You don’1t even know me.” I said quickly.
“They’re real. I wouldn’t give you fakes,” He said, his nose wrinkled with disdain.
“How did you-” I whispered.
How did you know I thought they were fake? How did you afford this? How did you end up in my life, on my doorstep like this? A million questions raced through my mind at once.
“Wear it tomorrow.” He commanded softly, interrupting my internal monologue. I got the sense that it was an order, not a request.
“I – okay.” I gulped, unsure of how else to respond.
Michael smiled, clearly pleased with himself. “I’ll see you tomorrow, then. Meet me there.”
“I’ll see you then.” I said meekly, feeling a little lightheaded. This was all too much.
“Oh, and Lyla,” Michael reached his fingertips out as I retreated back inside. My name in his mouth was a dream, the way he drew out the syllables like he savoured it. I felt a pull like gravity towards him; he was the sun.
“Sweet dreams.” He spoke, before the door swung shut.
---
Saturday evaporated into thin air – the hours seemed to fly by, and I was quickly running out of time to get ready. I’d often find myself distracted, thinking about what he meant yesterday. Sweet dreams. It had to mean something, but it didn’t make any sense. Could he hear my thoughts? Did he know I’d dreamed about him? Could he hear how my heart raced whenever he looked at me? Could he tell how I was somehow both attracted to and afraid of him?
When my hair and makeup was finally done, I fiddled with the clasp of the choker Michael gave, struggling to latch it.
“Need a hand?” Penny offered. I bowed my head as she helped me. “Woah. When did you get this?” She asked.
“Um – yesterday. Michael kind of…gave it to me.” I confessed.
Penny’s fingernails dug into my shoulder. “You like him!” She yelled excitedly.
“I guess there’s no point trying to lie to you, right?” I blushed.
“Damn, you really like this kid. Dreaming about him?” She said, hands on her hips.
“How did you know that?” I questioned.
She closed her eyes and moaned exaggeratedly, “Michael, Michael.”
She told me she’d heard me talking in my sleep when she got up for a glass of water last night. I was mortified.
“Just…be careful. I can’t feel him. Usually, I can sense someone like that, someone we know. When he was here, I couldn’t feel anything. It was like I was in the dark.” She murmured.
Penny’s warning stuck with me because I didn’t stop thinking about it all night.
When we arrived at the ball, I stepped out of the car carefully, so I didn’t step on my dress. My heels were a little too high for comfort, but I felt unstoppable.
There was a set of wide marble steps up to the ballroom, and inside the building glowed gold and warm.
I looked for Michael, hoping to find him waiting for me outside. My heart sank to my stomach when he wasn’t. Immediately assuming the worst, I thought he’d stood me up. Of course he did. This stupid ball didn’t mean anything. He’d invited me for a laugh with his boys. He never wanted to come in the first place. It wasn’t his scene.
“Earth to Lyla. Are you ready to head in?” Zoe asked. She looked like a badass in her purple blazer, tapered black pants and heels.
“Yeah.” I mumbled, linking arms with my sisters and walking towards the building.
We were only a few steps from the entrance when a strong hand grabbed my waist, pulling me away. I was about to scream when I saw Michael’s smirk in the shadows. I flinched at his touch, but his eyes lured me closer. Zoe frowned, but told me she’d see me inside. Her raised eyebrows silently said, If I don’t see you inside in ten minutes, I’m calling a search party.
When we were alone, tucked into the dark space between a marble pillar and the fence, Michael’s eyes almost glowed in the dark. His stare didn’t break from mine once.
I shrunk into myself, avoiding his skin. His bottom lip jutted out.
“You were so hot last time. Your skin, I mean. It burned me.” I rubbed my arm at the memory.
“I don’t know what you’re talking about,” He smiled innocently. “You look beautiful.” He said, hands around my waist, keeping me locked against his body. It was warm, but not scalding. I relaxed into his arms. With anyone else, this would be too much, too fast. With Michael, I felt like I couldn’t get close enough.
“You too.” I was breathless.
“I look beautiful?” He laughed.
“Yes.” I said, without hesitation. He did – his suit was pressed immaculately, black jacket over black shirt, with a thin black tie. His shoes were polished, his hair was brushed out and wavy, and this time, his thin gold chain was hanging out neatly underneath the collar of his shirt. I had a feeling in the pit of my stomach that somehow it was because he knew – he knew how much I thought about that damn chain, dangling over me. It was a taunt.
He grinned. I’d never seen him smile like that. Being the reason behind it made my heart hammer in my chest.
“Are you nervous?” He was smug.
“Maybe. Are you?” I asked, hoping he’d say yes. I wanted to know that I had just as much of an effect on him as he did on me.
“You wore it.” He whispered, bringing a long finger up to my throat, tracing the thin chain of diamonds there. Goosebumps sprang to the surface of my skin.
“I did. Thank you – I don’t think I actually said that yesterday.” I closed my eyes, melting at his touch.
“You’re welcome.”
I tugged at his chain softly, “I like this. You should wear it out more.”
“I know you do.” He smiled. He looped my arm through his, nodding gentlemanly. My mind reeled through the possibilities of what he meant by that as we walked in together.
Zoe’s head was swivelling around the room, waiting for me to enter. Once she saw me in one piece, she smiled and waved me over.
“Will you come sit with us?” I asked Michael.
He was scanning the room, too preoccupied to hear me.
I squeezed his arm, and he snapped back to attention. “Come sit over here with me.” I repeated.
His lips twisted, considering it. “I shouldn’t. They’re your friends.”
“Just come.” I pleaded.
He rolled his eyes, and it was then that I knew he had a soft spot for me. He stood up taller, and we walked to our table.
Over dinner, I took the opportunity to get inside his head a little. I had to figure out how he knew so much, and how he made it feel like I had a magnet in my ribcage, drawn only to him.
“You said you’ve only been at Hawthorne for a few weeks. How did you end up there?” I asked.
He paused halfway through cutting his steak. He seemed to consider his next words carefully.
“I got myself into some trouble, my powers got a little out of control. Somehow, Ariel found me. He got me out of there, and I didn’t look back.” He smiled sweetly.
“Got you out of where?” I asked.
“A jail cell.” He replied darkly. I saw the flicker of a smile in his eyes.
I froze. The sudden realisation that I didn’t know the first thing about Michael hit me like a tonne of bricks. I had no idea who he really was. But here, sitting elbow to elbow with him, wearing diamonds he bought, I thought, who the hell am I?
“How did they find you, the Academy?” He asked politely. It always felt like a power play – I asked a question, he ignored it or gave me a half-answer, and then he’d ask another question like nothing had happened.
“I broke my teacher’s arm.” I said flatly.
He grinned, clearly entertained. I softened a little – when he listened to me, he really listened. He watched me intensely and nodded with encouragement. He made me feel like the only person in the room.
“So, Michael,” Penny called from across the table, breaking our bubble of conversation and bringing us into the rest of the group. Next to her was Jerome, Zoe, and a few other warlocks I didn’t know well. “What’s your story?” She asked. She was watching his every move like a predator.
“Not much to tell. I just started at Hawthorne not long ago. I’ve been fortunate enough to do well in my classes. Favourite colour is red.” He replied cheekily.
Under the table, his hand came to rest on my knee, drawing soft, absentminded circles against the velvet. I pretended it wasn’t happening, despite the swarm of butterflies in my stomach. He gave me a sly look out of the corner of his eye.
“What are your parents like?” I asked.
He smiled with raised eyebrows, giving me a look that said, I know you’re trying, but it’s not working. He was being strangely evasive, even for a reserved person. “My father wasn’t around much, and I never knew my mother.” Michael explained, his hand travelling up to my thigh.
He was trying to distract me, but I wouldn’t have it. I felt terrible for asking, but I had to know more. I had to understand him. “Who raised you?” I blurted out.
“I stayed with a few different relatives growing up, before a…family friend took me in. Miriam Mead – the best woman I know. Closest thing to a mom that I have.”
“What’s she like?” I asked, pressing further.
“Let’s dance, shall we?” He said through a fake smile, taking my hand and pulling me forcefully towards the dancefloor. It kind of hurt. The worst part is that I didn’t even care – he could drag me to hell and I’d still follow him.
Not many other people were dancing, but everything else faded away once his arms were around me. I was totally entranced.
“What do you want?” Michael growled, the sound low and menacing.
It shocked me. I was suddenly aware of how much taller and bigger he was than me, and how easily he could hurt me if he wanted to.
“What do you mean?” I asked, pulling away.
He yanked me back into place, holding me hard against his chest. “You’re pretty, but you’re not dumb. What are you playing at?”
Despite my heart pounding, I felt my cheeks go pink.
“I don’t know what you’re talking about, Michael. But I have questions, so many of them.” I shot back hotly.
“Fine. Your turn.” He spat, keeping us gliding effortlessly across the floor. To an outsider, we looked like any other couple dancing.
“Can you read minds?” I whispered. I don’t know why I felt like it had to be kept a secret. I had a feeling Michael was a lot more powerful than he let on.
“Yes. My turn. Who are you, really? What are you trying to do, finding out so much about me?” His eyes narrowed, snake-like.
“I’m Lyla, and I’m just trying to figure you out.” I squared my jaw.
“Figure me out.” He mused, hand gliding across the small of my back.
I nodded. “My turn. How did you burn me last week, when you touched my arm?” I asked.
Michael looked down at his feet, his first sign of insecurity all night. “I lost control,” He sighed.  “You…make me feel like I could lose control, all the time. I have to be careful.” Golden hair fell into his eyes. I brushed a lock aside and my fingers lingered by his ear, feeling how warm his skin was.
“I’m stronger than I look. You don’t have to worry so much.” I lied. My heart was jackhammering against my ribcage.
“I appreciate the sentiment, but I could kill you, Lyla. And I don’t want that. Not yet, anyway.” He smiled.
“How old are you?” I asked Michael, for the second time.
“That’s two questions, wait your turn.” He chided. He craned down to my level, brushing his lips against where my neck met my shoulder.
“Why are you so weird about age?” I whispered.
“Because it’s a very long and difficult story, one for another time. Can you just dance with me?” He murmured. He clung to me like static.
I sighed, leaning against his chest. His lips still dragged softly against my skin, and my nerve endings felt like live wires. When he reached my ear, I could feel his smile against my skin. Memories of my dreams from the nights before flashed like déjà vu. I opened my mouth to ask him about it, but he silenced me by squeezing my hip.
I wasn’t going to get all my questions answered tonight, but this was a start.

Delicate - Chapter 7
Inuyasha sighed out, a barely-visible puff of air appearing before his face as he walked along the length of the gate outside of the schoolyard. He felt abnormally exhausted this morning, and like anyone, he blamed it on the fact that it was Monday, the clouds were dreary, and he may have been up late playing video games. He had a chemistry test this afternoon, and he could only hope to wake up a little more by then to properly focus.
He’d caught her scent just before entering the building, his attention blindly following his nose as his eyes scoured the grounds for her. She wasn’t that far off, standing in a misshapen circle with Sango and three other girls, one of them enthusiastically telling a story that had the lot of them giggling. That smile, the rosy color of her cheeks, the way the tip of her nose was a light shade of pink from the chill of their morning, it was all like a buzz of caffeine for him. The more he watched, the more he listened to the melody of her laugh, the lighter he began to gradually feel.
Kagome was wearing black tights beneath her charcoal uniform skirt this morning as opposed to the knee-high socks she usually opted for, sparing her legs from the small nip in the air. Over her white button up, she donned a dark, knitted sweater, the baggy sleeves shielding her fingers. But, her neck wasn’t covered. Sure, her hair was worn down, waving over her shoulders in their natural order, but what good was that compared to something literally manufactured to keep heat in? The dummy was just asking for a cold. Whatever combatant thought that formulated in his head deliberately went ignored as he turned away from the building to walk toward her, a horrible fluttering expanding throughout his abdomen. Sango’s gaze met him first as he approached, then Kagome’s as the group of girls’ chatter died off into a curious and muddled silence. God, he didn’t think there was anything capable of rivaling the annoying sensation in his stomach at the moment, but when she smiled wider at him as he stopped just a foot or two before her, his heart gave a thunderous pound that he worried would wound his ribcage. His cheeks went hot, then his nose, then the remainder of his face, and the thought of his evident blush only made him heat up furthermore. Her greeting was soft and happy, bringing him to huff out, his jaw clenching, and his amber eyes drifting off to the side. As planned, Inuyasha removed the muffler from his neck, untwisting it so he could hand it over. From his peripherals, he gathered that she was confused, not immediately taking it from him, so he decidedly did the damn job himself before he ended up spontaneously combusting from flames of embarrassment. Carefully, the hanyou looped it behind her neck, twisted, then looped it again so it bunched properly to keep her warm, her raven hair billowed beneath.
She was staring up at him with large eyes, her pink lips pinching together then growing into a shy and appreciative smile. Son of a bitch, she was fucking cute.
He walked away, heading toward the entrance of the building without a single word, and Kagome’s blush maddened as her friends made hushed and cheery noises at what had just happened.
“So, what? Are you guys together now?”
“When did you two even become a thing?”
“Wasn’t that Inuyasha? I’ve never seen him not mad.”
“Nah, he still looked mad. Just a flustered sort of mad.”
“And to think just a couple days ago you were worried.” Sango teased.
“Yeah, but y-you know happened.” Kagome said, feeling like she was standing under an intense spotlight.
“Uh, we don’t!” Eri stated, bringing the attention back to them. “Hello, hi. Details, please.”
“Oh, look at the time.” Kagome pulled back the sleeve of her left hand to look at the invisible watch along her wrist, beginning to walk backward toward their school building. “I need to - I’ve gotta - I mean, class is starting soon, so yeah. Bye.”
Sango laughed, waving and knowing full and well that her friend was heading to catch up with her favored half demon.
“I don’t suppose you’ll tell us?”
“Sorry, guys.” She shrugged, smiling. “The best friend privilege is knowing, and the code is not spilling business that isn’t mine to spill.”
Kagome wandered over to his locker in the third row, spotting him just as he closed the small, metal door. He glanced over, his eyes never leaving her as she sauntered his way, and though his cheeks continued to reveal some of his timidness, a soft smile on his lips further ignited the spark between them.
“I don’t need it back if that’s what you’re about to ask.”
“Not yet, anyway.”
“After school. Keep it until then.”
“I actually came to walk with you. If that’s okay?”
“You don’t need to ask, dummy.” Inuyasha replied, though there was the hint of tension in his tone. He gave a notch of his head to lead the way, shoving his hands into his pant pockets to appear as casual as possible. She walked at his side, just as close as they’d walked on Saturday night, and he found it to be a source of comfort. Progressively, his preservation melted away with her warmth, wanting less to hide his affection behind a barricade and wanting more to give it to her so she’d always smile like she had before.
“So, uh, how’d you do on your last math test?” He asked as they began their ascent up the stairs and to the second floor where their classes were.
“Oh, I totally forgot! I meant to show you!” Kagome opened her book bag at her side, pulling out the quiz after wiggling it free from between two notebooks. She held it out, positively beaming and excited for him to see her accomplishment.
Inuyasha took in the “B” next to her name before taking the paper into his grip, a smile of his own forming as his pride for her swelled. “This is the best one yet! Soon you’re not even gonna need my help.”
“I don’t know about that.” She quickly countered, a little nervous at the sound of losing any easy opportunity to see him outside of school. “I still struggle a bit. And, I mean, you do call me a dummy.”
“Not as an insult.” He chuckled, handing the test back to her so she could shove it back into her bag.
“It originated for a reason, and then just became an endearment of sorts.”
“I don’t think you’re dumb.” Inuyasha said, still smiling. He glanced at her, noticing the uncertainty in her eyes, shielded behind a small grin. Was she looking for validation? He felt something click in him, like he didn’t actually need to question what she wanted. The quick rebut she’d served just a moment ago to his comment, the look she was giving, the warm sensation building in his chest - it made it easy not to second guess his intuition. This was an understanding he’d been privileged to receive from being with her so often, from falling in love. Not a part of him desired to resist what surprisingly and so simply came to him right now, the back of his hand grazing her knuckles until he hooked one of her fingers with his own. They both stopped walking, and he pulled her closer by another inch. “Relax. I’m not going anywhere; we’ll still study together. Maybe you’ll even end up tutoring me.”
“Doubtful.” Kagome muttered with a shy smile, her finger gently clutching his in return.
“Which part?”
“Me tutoring you.”
“Yeah, you’re right.” He chuckled, her responding giggle like a gift. The bell rang and he knew the halls were about to get busy as everyone filtered through to class. He took the opportunity he had, never letting go of her finger. “Tomorrow? I’ll walk you home and we can study.”
“Okay.” She nodded, smiling.
Using his free hand, Inuyasha twirled some strands of her hair around his finger, ones that were short, and framed her jaw, and weren’t held captive by the muffler like the rest of it all still was. “Come on, dummy.” He grinned, leading her to her class with a yank on her finger.
Sango puffed out her cheeks in a mock pout, standing by a tree with her arms crossed over her chest after school. “Call me repetitive, but I still cannot believe you’re ditching me for a boy today.”
“You’re repetitive.”
“Thank you.”
“I’m not even ditching you,” Kagome laughed. “I said he’d be walking with us. You’re the one who chose to walk home alone.”
“Excuse me, look me in the eyes and tell me I’m third wheel material. I dare you.”
She laughed a little harder from her best friend’s dramatic exasperation. “He’s walked with us before, Sango! It’s just like every other time.”
“Bull and baloney! The last time he walked with us was before you guys got over the majority of your romantic constipation.” Sango ignored the weird look that took over Kagome’s expression, proceeding on with her argument without hesitance. “Things are better now, you’ve both gotten a clue - thank god - and moves are being made. When he said he wanted to walk you home, he meant he wanted to walk you home. Therefore, if I tag along until we hit my route, he’s gonna be uncomfortable up until then and I’m gonna be the cockblock.”
“What? Not even!”
“Oh, yeah.”
“So, you’re just gonna avoid us forever now? This is it? Whenever Inuyasha wants to come with, you’re out?” Kagome grinned, leaning her head to the side in a playful challenge.
“No, of course not. Not forever. When you guys are in an established relationship - and by established, I mean passed the mushy crap - then I’ll make my return. Maybe even sooner if I land myself a stud, because then I wouldn’t be a third wheel.” Sango shrugged.
“You’ve got one guy in mind that can’t even talk to you passed ‘hello,’ so that could take a while.”
“See you on the flip side, my main gal.”
“You realize then that this isn’t me choosing a guy over you, but you choosing your pride over everything?”
“You bet, but I’m still blaming you.”
“You know what? I’m gonna do you a favor.” Kagome cocked a brow, her smile shifting into one of deviousness.
“What? No, wait. No. I know that look, and I hate it. What are you gonna do?” Sango’s face twisted in suspicion, her brows furrowing deeply as Kagome turned about, seemingly searching the school grounds. She had a sinking feeling in her chest as a scheme had obviously just popped into Kagome’s head, and who had she just mentioned? Bad, not good, very bad. “Kay, I swear to Zeus if you -“
“Oh, there they are!” Kagome beamed, practically skipping her way over to the pair of far-off boys.
“I have no best friend!” Sango hissed, quickly ducking herself to hide behind the tree.
Inuyasha’s golden stare transferred from his friend to her as she approached, the plain expression he held while Miroku talked changing to a gentle grin. He notched his head in a silent greeting while his friend finished his sentence.
“Hi. Sorry, I didn’t mean to interrupt.” She apologized, stopping before them, a little closer to Inuyasha than in the center.
“Nothing to worry about.” Miroku kindly dismissed. “Since you’re here, let me ask you something: Do you prefer me with or without the rattail? I need a lady’s perspective.”
“Oh, god no, definitely without.” Kagome answered a little too quickly, giving a small grimace when she realize how rude it could have come off, especially as Inuyasha stifled his snorted laugh. “I mean, it’s your choice, of course! I just think the style is a bit outdated. And, this shorter cut suits you much better. Were you thinking of growing it back?”
“Wow. Not anymore.” Miroku blinked, pinching his lips into a tight line.
“Thank you.” Inuyasha boasted, like he’d finally gotten his way. He gave another small nod to Kagome, gesturing in the direction of the gate. “Come on, let’s go.”
“Hang on, I have a question.” She said, stopping Inuyasha before he could lead her off. She looked over at his friend, watching him go from feigned defeat to slightly curious when he realized it was for him. “I’m sorry if this is none of my business, but do you mind if I be a little upfront for a moment and ask how you feel about Sango?”
“Oh god, you’re gonna break him.” Inuyasha murmured beside her.
“No, I promise I won’t tell her anything. I’m just wondering.” Kagome assured.
“You mean, I haven’t made it painstakingly obvious?” Miroku asked monotonously, his grin devoid of any real emotion.
“So, you like her?”
“Something like that.”
“Why haven’t you asked her out?”
“Remember that time, a few months ago, when I stopped you guys on your way home from school?”
“Yeah.”
“I was going to try and get her number then. I had a classic pickup line planned and everything, and yet the only thing that came out of my mouth was her name. I can’t function around her. I panic around her. I freeze, I sputter, and I shave a few years off my life every time I’m around her. You see my problem?”
“Okay, you’re not good with girls. It’s fine, you’ve gotta start some-“
“I’m fantastic with girls, you take that back!” Miroku retorted defensively.
“Really? You can actually claim that right now?” Kagome earnestly asked.
“You really think you have the room to talk when you two still aren’t even dating?” Miroku chided, pointing to both Inuyasha and Kagome. He didn’t even have time to flinch before Inuyasha slugged him in the arm, his pained groan gurgled and deep. “Okay, withdrawn!” He clutched the offended spot, respectfully ignoring Kagome’s embarrassment as he continued speaking to buffer the awkwardness. “Look, there’s just something about her that fucks me up. Little-by-little, I’m talking! I’m getting better! I’m growing! I’m not always melting down like I used to! I’ll get there eventually!”
“What if I make it a little easier on you?” She offered with a simple shrug.
“How?”
“Give me your number and I’ll give it to her. That way, you don’t have to stress yourself out by asking for hers, and that’s one objective down.”
“Wait,” Miroku tilted his head skeptically. “Are you - are you saying she’s interested?”
Kagome feigned a believable frown. “Actually, I don’t know.” She lied. “Sango’s a pretty private person. She doesn’t often talk about her feelings, even to me. I’m just doing this to help you out. You’re a nice guy, and I’m her best friend. Easy in-between.”
“What’s the catch?”
“No catch.”
“No catch?”
“She said no catch. Just do it.” Inuyasha griped. “You’ve been going on and on about this since last year, and now you’re gonna question the opportunity?”
“Because, there’s gotta be a catch! She owes me nothing - you owe me nothing. So, why do me a favor?”
“No catch.” Kagome repeated, shaking her head. “Honestly, I’m just a nice person. If you want to do it yourself, by all means. I’m not trying to make you uncomfortable or push you to do something you don’t want to do. But, if I do it, we eliminate the potential to wreck yourself even more in front of her, and then the ball’s in her court. If she’s interested, she’ll text or call, if not, then nothing happens and you have your answer. Besides, I think she’s already headed home, so I can talk you up a little and say you wanted to give it to her today but she’d already left so you gave it to me to pass on.”
“No catch?”
“No catch.”
“No one’s that nice.”
“I am. Oh, and just think. It’s always easier to talk through text because you have time to think through what you want to say before you say it.”
“He’ll still mess it up.” Inuyasha quietly mentioned.
“Nah, I don’t think he will.” She said, smiling, redirecting the conversation back to Miroku. “Then, you’ll adjust, realize Sango’s super easy to talk to and there’s nothing to be nervous about, and talking to her in person will be as normal as talking to anyone else.”
“Oh, fuck, yeah okay. You drive a hard bargain, Higurashi.” Miroku eagerly opened his bag, bringing out his notebook and opening it to the first empty page. “Inuyasha, your pen.” He requested, holding his hand out as the half demon pulled his pen from his front, pant pocket. Taking the writing utensil and clicking the ballpoint end out, he began scribbling along the upper-right corner.
Kagome could tell it wasn’t just his number he was jotting down, but she didn’t try to peek, instead giving a quick side-glance to Inuyasha and winking so he knew she had this planned. Miroku tore the edge of the paper, folding up his little note and handing it over to Kagome which she happily took and slipped into the small pocket at the front of her book bag.
“Say something nice about me when you see her.”
“Don’t worry.”
“Now, can we go?” Inuyasha spoke, taking back his pen and sliding it into his front pocket once more. Kagome smiled, giving a nod and waving goodbye to his best friend before walking off with him toward the exit. As soon as they were out of the gate, and effectively out of earshot of Miroku - who had to stay behind for his stupid student council committee - he shot her a sly look. “What was that all about?”
“Just helping things along.” She replied, giving a measly shrug.
“Ka-go-me!” The shout was menacing and chilling, over-enunciated for full, grounding effect, and bringing Kagome to look wearily toward a fuming Sango who was running right toward her. Hastily, she dodged around the half demon, using him as a shield to protect herself from the temperament of her best friend.
Inuyasha stood stiffly between the two, thoroughly confused and unsure whether this was actually something he should literally be in the middle of.
“No! Wait! Don’t be mad, I didn’t do anything wrong!” Kagome proclaimed.
“What did you say!?” Sango asked, brows pinching together but no real malice to her tone. She was frantic for an answer, and naturally defensive, but Kagome should have known better than to pull one of Sango’s own stunts on her.
“Nothing about you!”
“Freaking liar!”
“No, I swear! I didn’t! In fact, the one question he asked about you, I lied about and turned the subject back on him!”
“And, what was the subject, Kagome!?”
“About whether he liked you or not!”
“Oh my god! You can’t just ask someone that!” Sango cried, shoving her face into her palms.
“What!? On Saturday, you said -“
Sango shushed her, the noise high pitched and tense. “I know what I said, but that advice wasn’t for me!”
“If it’s any consolation, he said yes!”
“He did!?”
“You said you wouldn’t tell her.” Inuyasha mentioned, turning his head to peculiarly glance at her from the side.
“Oh, because it wouldn’t be obvious when I gave her his number?” Kagome retorted, not yet coming out from the shelter his body provided.
“What?” Sango asked, slightly shocked.
“Yeah, see,” Kagome fished the folded up paper out of the pocket of her bag, sliding her arm around Inuyasha’s waist to hand it over. Her friend snatched the note like a monkey snagging a banana from its handler, unfolding it to read its contents. “I didn’t read it, I promise. He really wanted me to give that to you.”
Sango studied what was written, her cheeks becoming a bright shade of pink before lowering the small shred of paper to peer at Kagome, her eyes large and pleading. “Did you seriously ask him for his number for me? He’s gonna think I’m desperate!”
“No! I offered to give you his number for him! I told him I didn’t know if you liked him, but I just wanted to do him a favor.”
“And, he fell for that?”
“Yup. Whatever else that says is all him. I didn’t suggest a note, just the number.”
Sango quickly handed the note to Kagome, making sure Inuyasha didn’t glance to read it, her hand held open for Kagome to return it when she was done.
I’m sorry I’m weird around you. I literally get dumbstruck by your beauty. I don’t want to mess up anymore, so here’s my number. Give me a chance. - Miroku.
Kagome beamed, slipping the small piece of paper back into Sango’s palm. “So, what do you think?”
“I don’t know. He really has no idea how I feel?”
“Look, I can honestly tell you he didn’t suspect a thing. You can go into this whatever way you want, and the guy wouldn’t know the difference.” Inuyasha testified, leaning his head to the side in a careless manner.
“You,” Sango pointed up at the hanyou’s face, a scowl forming on her own, successfully intimidating him as he flinched back an inch. “Will keep this conversation to yourself, got it? I mean it. Don’t tell him anything that happened here.”
“How are you so scary for a small chick?” He held his hands out defensively in front of him.
“My dad’s a cop.”
“Ah.”
“Believe me, he won’t say anything.” Kagome assured, finally coming out of hiding. “So, are you gonna text him?”
“You’ll find out when your friendship timeout is up.” Sango sneered, pursing her lips and crossing her arms.
“How long!?” Kagome pouted.
“To be determined.” She shrugged, walking off to take a different route home.
“Determine!”
“Two hours.”
“Hours?”
“You’ll be busy anyway, so you won’t even notice.”
“Sango!”
“Bye!” She waved from behind, crossing the street.
“You guys are weird.” Inuyasha remarked, walking on ahead.
“You really won’t tell, right?” Kagome asked, upping her speed to reach his side again.
“What? That Sango likes Miroku? Nah.” He confirmed, his tone level as he gave a small shake of his head. “I kind of figured you wouldn’t just do Miroku a favor out of the blue like that. Even before you winked.”
“So, you blindly backed me up?”
“Yup. Stupid, huh?”
She smiled, turning her head so he wouldn’t see how happy it had made her. The muffled chime of Inuyasha’s phone went off in his pocket, bringing her attention back his way as he pulled it out, his brows giving a small twitch together as he whispered an apology to her and answered.
“What’s up?” She couldn’t hear who was talking on the other end, but she continued walking at his side, minding her business to the best of her abilities, even when Inuyasha grumbled. He stopped walking, pinching the back of her sweater with his free hand to make her stay with him, his head lolling back in exasperation. “Yeah, fine, I’ll go check. I swear, you’re getting too old to leave the house.”
He hung up, grimacing deeply. “My uncle thinks he left the stove on and he won’t be back until late. I can run home real quick and I’ll meet you at your place. That okay?”
“Oh, yeah.” Kagome nodded understandingly. He flashed a small grin, his pace hastening slightly as he walked ahead to the corner, about to cross to the right where she’d just go straight. She watched him stop even though it was perfectly safe for him to go, an unsure expression on his lips as he pressed them together, eventually turning back to her as she finally reached the corner, herself.
“Unless, um, unless you just want to come with me? It’ll be a quick stop.”
Her smile grew brightly, her nod coming before her brain could actually initiate the response. When he smiled back and notched his head for her to follow, she couldn’t help the wild flutter that made home in her belly. She’d never been to his place before. She was excited.
As if things couldn’t get any better, he’d grabbed her sleeve, pulling her closer to walk at his side again. In all honesty, she’d expected him to let go once he’d gotten his way, but he didn’t. He held onto her sleeve, keeping her with him as they walked, the silence undeniably comfortable. Kagome wondered if it would be okay to actually hold his hand. Would it make him shy away? They practically held hands yesterday, so they may as well, right? Was this the way he preferred it, or should she make the move? Maybe she’d try it slowly to properly read the situation. Because, she really, really, wanted to hold his hand.
Carefully, she angled her hand upward, her forearm following through as necessary, so she could brush the side of his fingers with her own. He didn’t look at her, nor did she look up at him, their eyes straight ahead or on their surroundings. His hand didn’t inch away, and his grip on her knitted sweater slackened, even more so as she brushed his fingers again. That second time, though, she slipped one of her fingers in the curve of his hand, then another when he welcomed her in, helping to build her courage. Inuyasha dropped his hold on her sleeve entirely, taking her hand in his, accepting the way she entwined their fingers and steadily following suit with his own grip.
Maybe it was due to her infatuation with the boy, but she sincerely felt safe with her hand in his; protected from everything uninviting the world may put before her. After a moment, her embarrassment even faded away, far quicker than she’d ever expected it to. His hand was large and hot, engulfing and wonderfully gentle, his nails never a threat to her, but his unexpected tenderness was, his thumb smoothly rubbing back and forth over the back of her palm, threatening to provoke an eruption of butterflies in her abdomen.
“It’s this one.” Inuyasha said, guiding her through the small, front gate and pulling his small set of keys out of the pocket of his bag. Begrudgingly, he pulled his hand free from hers to open the door, letting her walk through first before following in and shutting it behind him. “Come on.” He walked up the hall a bit, her small, padded footsteps close behind him as he took a left into the kitchen, seeing the stove was off all along.
“False alarm?” Kagome giggled.
“Better safe than sorry with that guy.” He groaned.
“Your home is nice.” She smiled, turning about to look at the small amount of decoration in the kitchen. It was a man’s home, that was for sure; it didn’t have a typical woman’s touch to it. Nonetheless, it was comfortable, kempt, and rustic.
“Well, it’s his. Totosai’s.” Inuyasha corrected with a dismissive shrug, sauntering back into the hall and toward the living room, making sure she followed.
“You live here, don’t you? And, he adopted you, so I’m sure you’re more than welcome to call this place yours.”
“I don’t know, sometimes I feel out of place.”
“You’ll only make yourself feel more out of place the more you say things like that.”
The half demon turned to her, brows furrowing speculatively. There was no animosity behind it; in fact, his smirk prodded her to elaborate.
“Like, okay say I’m feeling insecure about my looks. I don’t feel very pretty or attractive, and it’s weighing on me. I look at myself in the mirror and then I tell myself I’m ugly. Not just once, but I end up telling myself that on a regular basis. The insecurity will definitely sink through a lot faster than it would if I maybe told myself the opposite. I’d believe it wholeheartedly then. And after that, I’d never feel comfortable in my skin, or my dresses, or skirts, or jeans, or maybe even my frumpy clothes. No amount of makeup would do the trick, either, because what I did was empower my self-consciousness. I didn’t do myself any favors by allowing myself to think my negative thoughts were true. I, instead, made my own situation worse. Why do that? Insecurities, on any level, are natural, and sometimes it’s hard to convince yourself of the opposite, but it’s so much more worth it to try. And, you’d be happier when you come out.” She took a step closer to him, smiling. Inuyasha merely gazed down at her, no air of discomfort about; he simply listened. “Your situation - it’s understandable. I’d even be so bold to say it’s natural to feel out of sorts sometimes. This wasn’t the home you pictured living in as a child, and those feelings don’t need to go neglected. But, this is a home you’ve been welcomed into. Your uncle signed the papers and brought you here. I’m gonna assume you have your own bedroom, and furniture, and your clothes fit you properly so he’s definitely providing for you. You’ve got a key, and look -“ Her grin grew larger, her enthusiasm a little too pronounced as she turned to the mantle and spotted a candid picture of Inuyasha as a pre-teen, sitting on a park bench with much shorter hair. “He’s even proud to have photos of you on display. This is definitely your home.”
Quickly, flustered Inuyasha walked the few paces over to the picture and slammed it down. “Alright, alright. You made your point.” He drawled, looking back at her. “You’ve got a motivational speech for everything, don’t you?”
“Pretty much.” She giggled.
“Mind if I go change out of my uniform real quick?”
“Go for it.”
Inuyasha walked out to the hall, leaving Kagome in the living room, his stomach feeling heavy while his chest fluttered with something uncertain. He’d stopped at the frame of the entry, his hand braced on the polished wood as he looked back at her over his shoulder, watching how she didn’t even seem to notice he was still there. She was carefully resetting the picture of him that he’d planted facedown, the pads of her fingers smoothing over the edge of the cheap frame.
“Is that what you were feeling?” The half demon asked, his tone husky. Kagome turned to him, slightly surprised, but the notch her head gave told him she didn’t immediately grasp what he was referring to. “Saturday. When you were sad. You mentioned insecurity. Was it because you didn’t feel beautiful?”
Kagome’s nerves flared dully, a small lump beginning to form in her throat. His amber eyes appeared gentle, and she couldn’t help but wonder how many times he’d thought of that night since. The shake of her head came slow at first, hardly there, but then grew into something more steady and honest.
“Will you tell me?”
She swallowed, her lips parting slightly. She still wasn’t fully comfortable talking about it, the humiliation remaining fresh, but he wanted to know and her reservation was superficial. He’d been opening up to her, trusting her, and she should do the same. He’d dropped whatever he was doing and ran to her that night. Literally ran. He calmed her down, he walked her home, he held her. Just him asking, revisiting the topic, had her feeling warmly invited to rely on him with her emotions, despite the minor apprehension holding her tongue. And, if the logic of the situation wasn’t enough, the patience he was exuding as he stood in place and waited for her to speak was. There was no caution in his expression, because there was no caution necessary between the two of them at the moment. The feeling she was receiving from him was almost the same as what she’d tried to procure during her little speech just moments ago. Safety and comfort. And, though Kagome wasn’t suddenly confident in spilling her vulnerability - as anyone would naturally feel - it wasn’t hard to let him in.
“I -“ The hesitance wasn’t planned, but she breathed to push passed it, her eyes inadvertently shying to the ground. “I wasn’t quite sure how you felt about me. I was constantly going back and forth with myself. After a while, it became too much and, um, yeah. That’s what Saturday was all about.”
Inuyasha tensed slightly, entirely unsuspecting of what she’d just stated. He’d racked his brain numerous times since Saturday night, since seeing her cry and feeling the way she clutched onto him for support, pretending he knew the deep ins and outs of Kagome’s mind so he could try and figure out what, exactly, she’d been feeling so he was better prepared to help her out of it should the situation occur again. The typical scenario that pops into a person’s head when told another is feeling insecure is looks, and he felt rotten just thinking a girl as gorgeous as she didn’t feel comfortable in her own body. He’d almost taken it as absolute confirmation when she’d brought up the hypothetical scenario just now. Another idea was her grades, or her future - because she’s in her final year of high school, and what senior isn’t panicking about their future at the moment - or maybe even something pertaining to her family. More specifically, playing backup guardian to her younger brother to help her hardworking mother out. That could easily weigh on a person, and he wouldn’t blame her for crumbling out of sight from the pressure. Inuyasha was almost prepared to make a list of the many positive attributes this one girl holds so he could help her see what he sees; so he could hopefully prevent another breakdown in the future. For some reason, he never thought it was about him. Not with how she was the first to walk into his arms, or with how she called him when she was fighting off tears. After that night, she must have understood how he felt about her, but that’s only three days of security. It made sense now that he thought about it; the half demon wasn’t known for his open displays of affection. There had never necessarily been a person he wanted to be openly affectionate with until now. As he had been coming to terms with his own emotions, gradually forcing himself out of his damaging and abrasive habits, somewhere along the lines he’d just assumed she knew. And, only ended up confusing her. That’s a good chunk of time that they weren’t on the same page, and he had no fucking idea. If she needed more obvious gestures, he could provide that. It was nerve-racking, but he would do it for her.
“Well, I hope you feel better now, because that’s a stupid thing to get upset about.” He watched as she seemingly took in his response, a small smile curving her lips, comprehending his language. “Wait for me, I’ll be right back.”
He came down the stairs, adjusting his hoodie as he went, spotting Kagome at a bookshelf at the far end of the living room as he came back through. Her brown eyes were glued on a photograph, never peering away to look at him as he approached.
“My dad.” He spoke, stopping just inches behind her.
“You look so much like him.” Kagome seemed almost astonished by the resemblance.
“Just the hair. I think I look more like my mom.”
“And the jawline.”
“And the jawline.” Inuyasha chuckled, nodding as he agreed.
“Is that your uncle with him?”
“Yeah, that’s the geezer. Come on, let’s go.”
She smiled up at him happily, following him out the door, waiting for him on the sidewalk outside the gate while he locked up. As he strode back over to her, he gave the shoulder of her sweater a small yank to lead her down the path he took to her place, his fingers casually sliding down the front of her arm until he reached her hand, tangling their fingers as they’d been before.
Their notes and homework assignments were sprawled on the floor of her bedroom between them, mostly used for reference when necessary as he quizzed her with random questions, a movie playing on the tv for soft background noise and their backs resting against the side of her bed.
“Wait, you already asked me that one!” Kagome complained, scrounging through the papers before her for the answer.
“Yeah, you got it wrong the first time, and you still can’t remember the answer I gave you.” He responded, his tone brassy but amused, breathily chuckling as he watched her go from one sheet of scribbled notes to another.
“It’s here somewhere.”
“You never wrote it down.”
“Dang it, Inuyasha!”
“Not my problem!”
“You probably distracted me.”
“It isn’t hard to do.”
Quickly, he protected his face with his hands, laughing as Kagome chucked a small, decorative pillow at him.
“So funny.” She mocked, reaching over and grabbing his notes from beside his knee. “Oh.”
“Hm?” His ear closest to her flicked, waiting expectantly for her to give him the answer.
“Oda Nobunaga.”
“So much for being a history buff, huh?” He remarked.
“You’re so sassy tonight.” Kagome laughed, putting his notes back where they once were.
“Okay, chemistry question: What’s the formula for hydrochloric acid?”
“Do you even know that off the top of your head?” She countered, grimacing.
“Wouldn’t ask if I didn’t.”
“What a nerd.” Kagome murmured, once more shifting through her study material. She sighed out slowly as she searched, her face scrunching like usual, and bringing the paper closer to her face, neglecting the glasses on her nightstand. “H-C-I.”
“Good. Since you’re looking at it, phosphoric acid?”
“H-3-P-O-4.”
“Mhm. Now put the notes down. The next question I ask, you should know by now.”
“Oh no.” She grumbled, complying.
“It’s easy. Say you borrow ten-thousand dollars from the bank. By the time you pay it off, you’ve paid a total amount of ten-thousand, four-hundred. What’s the additional four-hundred represent?”
“Oh, interest!”
“Good. See?” He smiled. “One last question and then I’ve gotta go. You ready?”
She hummed an affirmation, nodding as she turned to fully face him.
“It’s gonna be the toughest one. You get it right and I’ll take you out for ice cream.”
Kagome smiled eagerly, whispering an okay as she waited.
“Alright, you sure?”
“Come on.” She half-whined, the anticipation spiking. She wondered just how hard the question was going to be considering he used a reward as incentive.
“Okay, what’s sixteen divided by two?”
“What? It’s eight.” Kagome laughed lightly, brows furrowing in query.
“Yup.” He feigned a defeated sigh, shrugging and gathering his notes together. “Fair is fair. You busy Saturday?”
“No, I’m free.” She smiled, thrown off since she was sincerely expecting a tricky question.
“Great, I’ll take you out on our date then.”
She perked, her expression faltering minutely out of surprise but then growing into one of subtle elation. “Date?”
Inuyasha picked himself up off the floor, bringing the strap of his bag to rest over his shoulder. He glanced down at her as she followed suit and stood, shrugging his brows and smiling slightly in a meager response to her question. “See you tomorrow.”
“Wait, I’ll walk you out.”
“Nah, don’t worry about it.” He said, opening the door to her bedroom and giving her head a gentle shove backward. “I’ll text you when I get home.
He crossed the street, seeing the designated meet-up spot in the short distance, the sun still barely keeping the sky illuminated. Hues of fading orange and pink danced on patches of clouds overhead, a deep indigo overriding the majority of the sky. He didn’t see her at the statue, and he was glad he’d beat her; he didn’t like the idea of her sitting alone waiting for him. As he approached, he pulled his phone out of the front pocket of his black jeans, making sure she hadn’t texted.
His stomach was in absolute shambles, his nerves riddled and wired. Their first date. It was about time, yeah, but that didn’t make the ordeal any less unsettling. He’d never technically done this before, so his worst fear was fucking it up. He tried pretending it was just another ordinary hang out so he’d calm down a bit, but he knew that wasn’t true. This was a date. He was finally taking Kagome out on a date. He figured when they got the ball rolling, it would be a lot smoother since being around each other was easier than he’d ever imagined it would be, but up until then he felt just about ready to puke.
To busy himself as he waited, Inuyasha adjusted his grey t-shirt beneath his jacket, making sure it didn’t look too wrinkled or disheveled. He knew people were technically supposed to dress up for occasions such as these, but outside of his school uniform, he refused to wear another button up unless absolutely necessary. It wasn’t his style. He still looked appropriate, and he vaguely remembered the way her eyes lingered on him the last time he wore this shirt around her.
“Well, well, well.” Inuyasha’s gaze, heating instantly, shot to the side, landing on the tall, slender delinquent that ambled over. He’d been so distracted waiting for Kagome that he hadn’t even fucking noticed the scent of the motherfucker. “Look who it is.”
“Fuck.” Inuyasha breathed, the word dragging out hoarsely. “I’ll give you twenty bucks to leave me alone tonight.”
“Who do I look like, Jakotsu? Gonna take a lot more than that to buy me off.”
“Not tonight.” Inuyasha’s tone was clenched and assertive, staring straight into the dark eyes of the man that continued to approach.
“Why? What’s on the agenda?” He asked, carelessly. An arrogant smile expanded on his face.
“I’m serious, Ren.”
“Yeah, see, the last time we saw each other, you shoved my face into a brick wall. I’m not feeling very understanding at the moment.” He sneered.
“You came at me first.”
“And, it wouldn’t keep happening if you’d just fix the mistake you made.”
“It’s on my to-do list. Right there next to making you kiss my ass.”
“You son of a bitch.” He swung his fist, but Inuyasha dodged in time, swerving around to the backside of his opponent and giving the quickest look around the surrounding area to make sure Kagome wasn’t in the vicinity. Multiple times he’d gotten out of these fights unscathed, and he hoped, fucking hoped, he could do the same right now.
“I gotta say, not a really good way to convince me to leave you alone.”
“Figured you wouldn’t, anyway.” Inuyasha’s shrug was barely visible, waiting for Renkotsu’s next move. He wasn’t the strongest fighter, but he was a tactical one. He liked to bait Inuyasha along, or whomever he was up against really, getting their tempers to flare so their fighting strategy was sloppy. In addition, he was, unfortunately, fast and nimble on his feet, and even though Inuyasha was good at swooping himself out of the way, Renkotsu was better at getting back in his.
The hanyou was pushed back, but the stumble was short-lived as he grasped his bearings and threw his fist into the punk’s face, feeling the sting of his knuckle colliding with Renkotsu’s tooth. His lip must have pinched between, because blood was quick to trickle free, painting his mouth crimson as he smiled and laughed.
“You’ve gotten soft, dog boy.” He remarked, his hand hovering beneath his chin but not really even trying to stop the bleeding.
“Shut up.”
“Since when do you hold back?”
Since he was steadfast determined not to come out of this with a single indicator that would tip Kagome off or ruin her night.
“Come on, what’s changed? You been whipped or something?” He lunged, faking right but snagging Inuyasha on the left, clutching the front of his jacket and tossing him headfirst into the statue.
The pain just above his temple was sharp, instantaneously growing unbearably hot as he picked himself up to a proper standing and felt the light leakage of liquid sliding down the side of his face, the sensation dulling and becoming hardly noticeable over the headache pressing him. There was a physical spike to his temper, his blood beginning to boil as a growl bubbled in his abdomen. Of all the members of that dumb squad, Renkotsu was the most annoying.
Something in Kagome snapped, having watched the guy attack Inuyasha. She knew this sort of stuff was happening, but it was indescribably different when she witnessed it first hand. Shock transitioned to anger. Anger transitioned to infuriation. Infuriation transitioned to irrefutable outrage, and that was that. Her next move wasn’t subconscious; she knew exactly what she was doing. Kagome ran at them, speeding up, sprinting as quickly as her legs would go and shoved the bastard as hard as she possibly could. He was sturdier than his lanky body suggested, only stumbling back several feet before his glare met her challenging scowl. Arms braced around her waist before she could lunge again, a husky voice she knew was Inuyasha’s telling her to “fucking stop,” as he pivoted on his heel and tucked her behind him. That didn’t halt her, though. Demands for him to move were grunted from her mouth as she pushed his arms away, trying to climb her way around his protective stature.
“What the fuck is that, your pet pomeranian!?” Renkotsu jibed, finally taking a moment to wipe the mixture of saliva and blood that dribbled down his chin, and spitting off to the side.
“Funny coming from a guy with premature balding!” Kagome barked, finally getting Inuyasha to let her go. He stood close, though, and she knew he was prepared to snag her out of harms way if anything happened. “Who the hell are you!?”
“Who’s asking?” He smirked.
“His pet pomeranian.” She cocked a brow tauntingly.
“You’re feisty. I like that.” He chuckled. “Name’s Renkotsu. And, you’re interrupting a private conversation between the actual dog and I.”
“And, what problem could you possibly have with him!?” Kagome fumed.
“Many.” Came his brusque reply.
“Kagome, look -“ Inuyasha spoke low, only to her, amber eyes shifting from their offender to make sure he didn’t move any closer, to the side of her face - because her sight was glued straight ahead. “Just wait for me in the park. I’ll be right there.”
“What’s he saying? Trying to act like the hero and send you off?” Renkotsu teased. “He deserves everything that’s coming for him. You know what he’s done?”
“Yeah, pissed you off.” Kagome said, her tone dismissive. “I’m gonna tell you upfront that nothing you say about him is going to change my mind from thinking you’re the little bitch here.”
“If I were you, I’d reel that attitude in, little girl. You don’t know what you’re getting into.” Renkotsu warned, his amusement dwindling away. It wasn’t difficult to determine he was a hothead, easily set off by name-calling and back talk, and he didn’t take kindly to challenges against his pride.
“Am I supposed to be scared?”
“You will be if you don’t back the fuck off. I’ll give you thirty seconds to leave.”
“And, if I don’t?”
“You’ll have to watch me kick your boyfriend’s ass. Then, maybe, I’ll take you and -“
“Finish that sentence, Renkotsu! I fucking dare you!” Inuyasha growled dangerously.
“Get her to leave, Inuyasha!” Renkotsu ordered, his voice on the edge of getting even louder.
“We’re both leaving.” Kagome said with the tone of finality, grabbing onto Inuyasha’s wrist.
“The hell he is!”
“You’re from that group of assholes, right? The one Inuyasha left? Which means you’re just carrying out orders from the top. Well, tell what’s-his-face to suck a dick and to handle his dirty work, himself.”
Inuyasha shot a look of surprise at her, a smile spreading over his lips, and turning back to look at the bald delinquent, he notched his head in appreciation of Kagome’s profanity.
“You gonna let your bitch fight your battles, mutt?”
He shrugged, still thriving off her recent jab. “She’s doing a pretty good job. How could I not?”
“You know damn well if I take this back to Bankotsu, he’ll have us out for her, too. Shut her up.”
“Bankotsu?” Kagome grimaced, blinking bemusedly. “Are you guys siblings or something?”
“No?” Renkotsu asked more than stated, his brows furrowing deeply.
“What’s with the similar names, then? That can’t just be a coincidence; it sounds so fake. Is that your actual name?”
“They don’t go by their actual names.” Inuyasha mentioned. “It’s one of the common measures they take to help protect their real identities. All of them have a code name ending in, ‘-kotsu’.”
“Seriously? Are you kidding me?” Kagome laughed audaciously, looking Renkotsu straight in his dark, narrowed eyes. “Hate to break it to you, buddy, but twinsy names aren’t intimidating.”
“It’s not what’s in a name,” He began, walking inward, his jaw clenching and unclenching repeatedly, evident from the muscles flexing at the crook of his mandible. “It’s how you present yourself. I’ve never been one for hitting chicks, but a motherfucker just might now.”
Inuyasha swapped their grips, now the one clutching to her wrist and directing her to angle behind him with a firm tug.
“I gave you the opportunity to leave, but you wanted to push your luck. I don’t like women getting involved, but oh well. Fuck me, right?”
“Yeah. Fuck you.” Inuyasha seethed, the scowl returning to set on his features. “If you think you’re ever going to touch her -“
“And, what are you gonna do?” Stopping with a foot’s distance between them, staring into the golden eyes of his original target. “Because you’ve been so successful in warding the rest of us off? You, of all people - if we can even call you that - should know by now that we don’t give up so easily. Now, she’s in the mix. Should have made her leave when you had the chance.”
“Are we done here?” Kagome questioned, her tone sharp. His eyes flickered down to her, a single, thin brow shrugging in insolence.
“Sure. I like that dress, by the way.” He grinned briefly before pursing his lips and spitting on her, his saliva still holding a tint of red and landing in the center of her breasts to stain the pastel pink she donned.
Kagome, though repulsed and disturbed, immediately grasped Inuyasha’s arm, pinching her nails into the sleeve of his jacket so he wouldn’t retaliate. His muscles were flexed and he’d been ready to swing in her defense, and even though he could easily overpower her, he didn’t fight against her. His indignation remained rigid, though, especially with the creep standing so close to them, and she knew, by the way he glared at Renkotsu, by the furious air wafting about him, by the way his shoulders were squared and his fists were tightly clenched, that he wouldn’t hesitate to attack if Renkotsu made another move.
“See you around. Both of you.” He smiled tauntingly, turning on his heel and walking away.
It wasn’t until he disappeared around the corner that Inuyasha’s shoulders deflated, a heated sigh leaving his nose as he slowly, but gently, pulled his forearm out of Kagome’s grasp. She was still angry, but with each breath she took, progressively getting steadier and deeper, her temper was fading away. Finally, Inuyasha turned around, facing her, a frown of disapproval marring his handsome face.
“You shouldn’t have done that.”
“Done what?” She inquired, her attitude still prominent.
“Jumped in like you did! You could have gotten hurt!”
“And, you’re mad at the thought of that, right?”
“You’re damn right I am!”
“Well, I got mad seeing it happen to you! So, I did something about it! It’s the same thing!”
“No, Kagome -“
“Yes!”
“No! It’s not supposed to work this way!” Inuyasha stepped in, leaving mere inches between them as they argued.
“I don’t care how it’s supposed to work! What does that even mean!?”
“That I don’t ever want you pulling a stunt like that again, got it!?”
“Excuse me!?”
 “He might have hit you, stupid! You can’t take punches like I can!”
“So, that makes it okay to just sit back and watch the show!? Like you’re some kind of punching bag!?”
“I would have handled it!”
“Then you should have!” Kagome yelled. “I heard him; he said you were holding back! Why were you holding back!?”
“Because you don’t like when I get into fights, Kagome! I didn’t want you to know this was happening! He came out of fucking nowhere, and I was trying to fend him off before you showed up!”
The tension in her brow decreased exponentially, his words ringing in her ears. She felt like an ass for doubting him that way, but still, no matter, she wasn’t sorry for pushing the jerk away from him. She would never be sorry. “It’s not that I didn’t think you could handle it. I knew you could have. I just got so angry and wanted to help.” Kagome calmly admitted.
“Well don’t.” Inuyasha said, authoritatively. “I don’t need your help.”
“Quite frankly, I don’t care what you think you need or don’t need right now. It’s irrelevant.” He flinched to counter but she beat him to the punch, holding her hand up to silence him. “You’re saying it because you don’t want me in the middle or getting hurt, I get that. But, it’s the exact same way I feel about you, so you and I are only going to end up going in circles about this. You can’t tell me what to do, and you can’t force me to just watch your head get thrown into cement without reacting.”
In all honesty, he’d forgotten he’d been hurt in the heat of it all, more concerned about protecting Kagome than anything. He hadn’t expected her to come flying in like a bat out of hell, fully prepared to square off with one of the lowlives of the city. Especially, for his sake. Once he saw her, he just reacted. Probably the same way she had. “Now you’re involved, though. That’s exactly what I didn’t want.”
“We’ll handle it.” Kagome said, unconcerned. To get a better angle on his cut, she leaned her head to the side, reaching up to gently hold his jaw and bring him down near her height. He showed no resistance, his long lashes fluttering softly as he closed his eyes.
“It’ll be fine.”
It really wasn’t all that bad. It looked like the bleeding had about stopped, but it should still be cleaned and bandaged. Releasing his face, she reached for his hand, pulling him in the direction she’d come from.
His grip on her palm tightened as they approached her home, noticing her mom’s car out front, and the living room and kitchen lights on. If she saw them, him specifically, with dried blood on his head, she’d know the night was disastrous and he’d put her daughter in a dangerous situation. He couldn’t have that. He’d already felt like a failure, but to have someone else think that, too - Kagome’s mother, no less - would be mortifying. Kagome’s attention drifted up to him at his notable discomfort, stopping with his cue.
“Your mom…”
“She’s a nurse, don’t worry.”
“No, I - I don’t want her to see this. I don’t want her to know what happened.”
The realization was evident on her face, but she didn’t look disappointed, her head turning to glance at her house before turning back to him.
“Climb up to my window. I’ll let you in.” She smiled.
“You sure?” He asked, and she nodded immediately, letting go of his hand. Before she could move further, he stopped her, pulling off his coat and handing it over. It made the idea of their date more believable if she came back with his jacket, plus it’d help hide the detestable stain. As she situated it over her arms, he reached down to grab the bottom of the zippers on both ends that landed at her thighs, lining them up together and zipping it for her. Kagome smiled appreciatively, turning around and heading inside.
Inuyasha snuck around the front toward the far left end as soon as she shut the door, grateful the curtains were pulled shut. As soon as he reached the tree he used for footing, he leveraged himself up, climbing until he could silently step onto the small roofing of the second story. Her room was still dark as he waited for her at the window, and though everything was muffled, he could vaguely hear her and her mom talking from downstairs. The specifics of their conversation were hard to distinguish, but he knew Kagome’s cheery tone from her upset one, and to him, she sounded happy. Probably fooling her mom into thinking everything was perfectly fine, despite the fact that she was home so soon after leaving.
Her footsteps grew closer, shuffling along as soon as she reached the top landing of the stairs, and even as she entered her room, she didn’t turn on the light until the door was closed. Her greeting smile was natural, and he couldn’t help but wonder how the hell she managed it. Kagome had every reason in the world to be upset right now, but she truly didn’t seem like she was. And, as she hurried over and unlocked the latch for him, sliding the window open, he was engulfed by the powerfully sweet scent of her that stayed locked up in her bedroom, thoroughly muddling any residual, negative thoughts from the evening.
He shut the window on his own, nodding when she mentioned she’d be right back and taking a seat on the floor with his back resting against the bed. Kagome was true to her word, returning less than sixty seconds later with a small first aid kit in hand.
“No, I told you it’d be fine.” Inuyasha chuckled quietly, taking the initiative to turn on the tv to drown out their voices.
“Cut’s need bandages.” Was her simple reply, not even sparing him a glance as she shuffled through her dresser drawers, pulling out a pair of leggings and a fresh shirt.
“The cut’s already healing. It’ll most likely be gone tomorrow.”
“Humor me.” Kagome rolled her eyes, pursing her lips as she tossed her clothes on the bottom edge of her mattress. “Close your eyes, please.”
Without hesitation, he complied, turning away for added effect. The ruffling of his jacket sounded heavy as she removed it, the material of her dress considerably lighter in comparison. It wasn’t the coldest night they’d had recently, but he still found Kagome brave for wearing it - long sleeved garment be damned. Then, an ache twinged in his chest. She’d worn that for him. And, the gesture hadn’t only gone to waste, but the dress was probably ruined now and he’d never be able to appreciate her in it.
At her signal, he opened his eyes, but he couldn’t bring himself to fully look at her, regret taking its hold on him. It wasn’t his fault, he knew, but that didn’t help any. How could he make up for this mess? How could he make her happy like he’d intended to tonight?
Kagome sauntered over, crossing to his right and then sitting at his side, thigh-to-thigh, facing him. The first aid kit was in hand, and she set it on the floor beside her, opening it and taking out some cotton balls in a sandwich baggy before turning to him. She seemed so gentle, her hands light when she pulled his bangs out of the way to asses the cut before doing anything else. As if feeling his unsubtle stare, her brown eyes drifted over to his, curious and large, then shied downward as the smallest of frowns tugged on her lips. Kagome dropped his hair, her hands falling to her lap before she bowed her head slightly, hovering over his shoulder.
Sometimes, you could say those three words to let a person know how deeply you feel for them. Sometimes, you could speak your profound emotions with more, or less, verbally, or physically. And, so badly did Kagome want to figure out how to properly express it all to him. To know Inuyasha, to have him sit with her, hold her hand, tell her things no matter the context, was a privilege she was scared for a while she’d never get to experience. Inuyasha, in his own essence, was such a wonderful gift. To have him care for her, and convey how much he cared through tumultuous anger weighted her heart. Maybe not in the moment could she appreciate the gesture, or clearly see his reasonings, but now that things were calmed and they sat so close, touching, trusting, she understood. How lucky she was. On the surface, Inuyasha was brash and hard-headed, he presented himself in a carefree manner, but truthfully, he was the most beautifully delicate person she’d ever met.
Finally resting her head against his shoulder, Kagome breathed out slowly, taking in the faint and generic spice of a man’s body wash on her inhale. Funny enough, of all the guys she’d noticed it on, it smelled best on him. What had come over her was the sudden and dire need to tell him everything she felt for him. It had hit her like a freight train; intense and insatiable. Something, she needed to say something to subdue the fire igniting her nerve endings, but as she opened her mouth to speak, all that came out was a whispered, “I really like this shirt.”
Of course, then, she laughed at herself. Typical of her to chicken out.
Kagome could feel his head come a little closer to hers, his cheek gently brushing against her hair as he said in return, “I know. I wore it for you.”
She smiled. He couldn’t see it, but she smiled.
“Are you okay?” Inuyasha asked, and she quickly sat up straight, forcing herself to appear fully recovered, as if nothing had ever fazed her.
“Yeah, I’m fine.” Kagome replied, moving back to her prior task without delay. After opening a small bottle of peroxide, she doused a cotton ball with the liquid. “Could you hold your hair out of the way?”
His expression spoke volumes on how useless he found the gesture to be, but still, he did as she asked, eye roll and all. She gently rubbed the cotton ball over the small wound to clean it, then around the surrounding area to wipe the dried blood away. His attention was roaming over her, and she tried not to pay attention to the way it alarmed the butterflies in her stomach, focusing on her task. It was like his ember irises were actual, flickering chars, and wherever his eyes landed, she felt a pleasant, burning sensation. Her cheek, her lips, her chin, her neck, her collar bone, her lips, her neck, her shoulder, her lips. All alight.
“Some first date, huh?” Inuyasha remarked, his tone dull.
Kagome’s soft smile in response was unintentional but genuine, dropping the dirtied cotton ball on top of the bag it came out of, and as she chose an appropriate bandage, she shrugged. “That doesn’t matter to me. I mean, we could have chilled and watched tv and slapped the first date title on that, and I would have been perfectly happy.”
“But, instead you got to see me in a fight. Kagome, I’m really sorry.”
“For what?” She asked, opening the bandaid packaging and carefully holding the very edges of the adhesive strips. She angled it properly over the cut, gently sticking it down and smoothing it out. “You didn’t do anything wrong. Besides, the way I see it, I got to yell at one of the jerks that’s been terrorizing you. Trust me, it was a good time.”
Inuyasha laughed, flinching as she rubbed her fingers over the entire bandage. “Ow.” He said playfully, instinctively grabbing her hand and pulling it away. She giggled and mumbled an apology, using her free hand to smooth down his ruffled bangs as he let them go. “By the way, we need to talk about your profanity. I don’t think I’ve ever heard you talk like that. ‘Suck a dick’? Is that peak Kagome temper right there?”
“I tend to lose my filter when I’m mad.” She exclaimed.
“You’ve got quite a vocabulary on you. It’s impressive. Remind me not to get on your bad side.” He mildly joked.
He was still holding her hand, his grip adjusted to rest it against his chest, his thumb tenderly caressing over her skin.
“So, you’re not mad at me anymore?” Kagome asked, her voice softening to take on the hint of bashfulness.
“Do I look like I’m mad at you?” Inuyasha responded soothingly. He leaned a little closer to her body, relaxed, warm. “I just - I really didn’t want you getting involved, Kagome.”
“It was kind of impossible not to.”
“I know. I get that. Now, I’m just gonna worry about you whenever we’re apart.”
“They’re not like an actual gang, are they?”
“No, they’re just like you said; a group of assholes. They tend to take their crap out on others and act like they’re tough. Some of them, though, are something to be concerned about. Statistically speaking, they’re not all gonna grow out of this phase. They’re on a gateway path, and I wouldn’t doubt if Bankotsu already had dirty affiliations.” Inuyasha said, letting go of her palm as he leaned even more towards her center, his right hand now braced on the floor by her legs in a casual manner. The closer he got to her, the more comfortable he found he felt. So comfortable, in fact, that he thought nothing of the way her fingers busied themselves in the loose tendrils of his hair along the sides of his face.
“How long were you with them?” Kagome asked.
“Not long enough to actually do anything I’d regret, aside from the obvious.”
“So, you were never actually one of them.” She stated. It felt like reassurance to the stress he already carried about having made the mistake of walking with them in the first place.
He opened his mouth to say something, but his mind blanked. Not in a hopeless way, but in the sense that there was nothing that needed to be said. As he basked in her confidence in him, calmed by the tips of her fingers continuously running through his bangs and loose strands from his ponytail, he realized that neither of them were going anywhere. What the hell was he waiting for?
There was no apprehension in his lean, the fingers of his free hand curving around the side of her neck and beneath her hair, intentionally holding just before meeting her lips. Kagome leaned in the rest of the way, her mouth soft and molding against his perfectly. And, she smiled into his kiss, giggling breathily, happily as they broke.
“I want to be with you, Kagome.” He spoke, tone husky, just as content. “You and I.”
She nodded, feeling so full and light at the same time it was difficult not to be consumed by her elation.
“Yeah?” Inuyasha smiled, almost teasing because he could tell how shy she was getting from the fresh and deep shade of her cheeks. Again, she nodded, her head ducking slightly. “Is that a yeah?”
“Shut up.” Kagome laughed, taking the initiative to kiss him again, his sigh hot against the side of her cheek while he firmly clutched her to him.

The Talk (Mona x MC)
As part of RoD appreciation week, I’m posting this fic now, although it was almost done at least a month ago. It’s slightly AU, set a few years after the main events, Mona and MC are no longer on the run. I just want to see them have a regular life… sigh. Anyway, no warnings except for language and some implications.
Cutsey chubby baby cheeks, and little baby feet moving aimlessly in all directions, and that little button of a nose… ohmygod, the baby was smiling at her, a bit of saliva running down his chin and just… ugh, Ellie’s heart was melting on that interesting verge between tenderness and aggression. She stuck out her tongue at the baby and he looked at her with curiosity, then giggled the way only babies did and wiggled in his stroller, reaching his little hands for her.
His father didn’t bother much, just glanced over at Ellie a few times as if to make sure she wasn’t thinking of kidnapping his offspring, what with the way she was staring with this wide maniacal grin. Here they were, the three of them waiting outside a baby store on a warm Saturday evening with the sun still fighting for a spot in the sky. The dad was looking at his phone rather absorbed by whatever it was he was reading, the baby was fascinated with Ellie, and Ellie… she was this close to throwing away all rules of propriety and snuggling up the little bundle without so much as asking for permission first.
Then she noticed in the corner of her eye Mona stepping out of the store, shopping bag hanging on her arm as she was putting away her purse. Ellie immediately turned away from the baby, startled, God forbid Mona got the wrong idea about this whole thing and decided Ellie might actually…
“All fixed”, Mona announced, looking up at Ellie, her face that of a person who just had someone else deal with an annoying issue. “We even got a discount to make up for the mix-up.”
“Oh”, Ellie acknowledged simply and leaned in to look at the bag. “Too bad they didn’t have the one with the bees pattern for one-year-olds. But this one is cute too.”
“It’s adorable, are you kidding, look at the little mice, I mean, c’mon…”, Mona’s face lit up for a moment, her grin so sincere, mellowing down all the hard edges. Ellie gazed at her adoringly before leaning in for a quick peck on the cheek.
“Let’s go, we’re late enough as it is,'' she urged her gently and walked a few strides ahead.
Mona just now noticed the baby. She gave the little munchkin a smile, noticing how he smiled right back, his puff baby mouth twisting in that amusing way. Mona made a funny face at him, then turned away, catching up to Ellie.
They hadn’t seen Riya and Kevin in quite a while. They missed Trina’s first birthday because their flight got delayed, leaving them stuck at the airport on the way back from New York, and then also ended up missing Kevin’s 30th birthday a few weeks later when Ellie’s father got hospitalised. Things turned out fine but Ellie was scared senseless for a few long hours before they got to him and the doctors reassured them it was a minor injury on the job.
And now that Riya and Kevin had invited them over for dinner just to catch up, they were making up for the birthday parties missed by getting Trina and Kevin some overdue gifts, as well as a little toy giraffe for Sam, who was going to throw a tantrum if his little sister got something and he didn’t.
Riya and Kevin’s apartment building was just around the next corner and for once they made it barely 15 minutes late. As they entered the 10th floor apartment, however, a huge baby bump greeted them, followed by Riya’s wide grin and the satisfaction on her face as she saw how surprised they both were.
“Oh my God, Riya…!”
“I’m not that far along, it literally happened overnight, I swear.”
They exchanged a few more words over taking off jackets and making their way into the apartment, a curious toddler swiveling around their legs all the while making incomprehensible little noises.
Kevin greeted them in the dining room, opening a bottle of red wine. He made his way to each of them for a quick kiss on the cheek. “So it’s no surprise any longer,'' he said between greetings.
“Oh, I had a hard enough time keeping it secret”, Riya protested, giving him a cheeky smile.
They all sat around the table, little Sam climbing up ‘auntie Mona’s leg to sit in her lab, the stuffed giraffe already in his clumsy grip. As she was playing with him - a striking contrast between his baby talk and her slang - Ellie was talking to Riya, sparsely casting glances their way, noting how good Mona was at this. She wasn’t surprised, frankly, she had seen Mona interact with Kevin and Riya’s kids before. But something today made her feel that extra pull in her heart at the sight of Mona holding little Sam and she couldn’t quite put her finger on it.
“So, obvi, we’ll have to skip that but I’d say it’s worth it”, Riya explained about their vacation plans.
“Oh, no, totally”, Ellie agreed, shaking her head. “We get it, we don’t want your waters breaking on the beach”, she laughed light-heartedly, reaching for her wine glass. “Besides, we’ll have the whole house to ourselves, right, babe?”
“Hm?”, Mona turned her head in her direction, Sam having captured her attention completely.
“I said we’ll have the beach house all to ourselves”, Ellie repeated, nodding her head toward Riya.
“Ah, yeah, sure, don’t worry ‘bout it”, Mona brushed it off before being suddenly smacked with the stuffed toy across the face, Sam openly demanding for her attention. “Hey, man, what the heck, thought we were buddies!”, Mona protested, much to his delight.
…
Late night conversations in Mona’s car was their thing. Sometimes they would go for a drive with no particular destination, leaving LA behind, Mona joking about never returning… but always making their way back to their apartment. They would talk for hours, having spent the day apart, and in those nameless moments Ellie could feel herself on the other side of Mona’s walls, safe in the little fortress instead of banging on the door as she had done so many times before.
On their way back from Riya’s they were both silent for most of the way. Ellie was pleasantly sedated by the one too many glasses of wine she’d had at dinner, her forehead rested on the window, the city lights blurring in her vision. Mona seemed to be somewhere else too, not in that detached, self-guarded way Ellie was well familiar with, but still, she was certainly in her head, only driving by instinct.
“So, should we…”, Mona broke the silence somewhat tentatively, Ellie’s head languidly turning in her direction.
“Should we…?”
“Yeah, I mean”, Mona’s gaze was on the road as she switched lanes, her focus divided. “Have one of those.”
It took Ellie forever to figure out what her wife meant by that. She knew her well enough to have an educated guess but she was confused by the wording and besides, surely Mona didn’t mean to suggest… or did she? Mona cast a quick glance her way when Ellie delayed her response, brows furrowed in concern.
“You want to have kids?”, Ellie asked for clarification, her eyes searching Mona’s face for a clue. She seemed dead-serious about it, whatever it was.
“Don’t you?”, Mona turned the question on her.
“Well, do you?”, Ellie arched an eyebrow, surprise coloring her face. Never had she imagined that Mona of all people would want to have the white picket fence life. Though, they were nowhere near that, their whole marriage so far as unconventional as they came, starting with the elopement in Vegas on the run…
“I actually want to.”, Mona raised her voice as if arguing against a previous version of herself, a bit surprised at her own answer.
“I do too…”, Ellie admitted softly, taking her gaze off Mona’s face to stare absently at the cars ahead.
“Since when?”, Mona gave her a quick glance, already anticipating the answer.
“Since always.”
“Can’t say the same for myself…”, a hoarse puff escaped her throat as she smirked.
“Since when do you want to have kids?”, Ellie inquired looking at her wife as if seeing her for the first time.
“Well, the idea kinda grew on me around Riya’s second.”
“And you’ve been thinking about it since?”, Ellie continued her little investigation, skepticism muffling her joy, making her cautious.
“Been considering it, yes…”, Mona glanced at her again, eyes widening at the look on Ellie’s face. “Don’t be so shocked, gorgeous, I have my moments.”
“You have more than moments”, Ellie quipped softly, her eyes sparkling with mischief, teasing Mona for her unexpected domesticity, her capacity for warmth and quiet marital contentment Ellie never thought she’d get to experience with her.
The muted sound of chatter and laughter filled the lazy morning silence as the sun drenched every surface of their bedroom in soft peach hues, its rays illuminating the millions of tiny dust specks in the air. Mona always watched those talk shows with no headphones and Ellie would chuckle beside her as a particular line briefly caught her attention, never taking her eyes off the screen of her own phone, sometimes making Mona mentally guess whether it was the host or a meme on Pictagram extracting that laughter.
But Ellie was unusually quiet today, not really paying attention to whatever it was she was looking at on her phone, neither really hearing the host’s witty remarks about the president’s latest diplomatic visit. She slightly leaned forward to reach for her cup of coffee on the tray between them on the bed, then had a small sip and hummed at the bitter taste she loved.
“It’s strong”, she remarked, pleased, not particularly addressing her wife but with the unspoken recognition that it was Mona who made coffee and breakfast this time.
“I was thinking about what you said last night,'' Ellie added after a few moments passed as the audience erupted into laughter.
“Hm?”, Mona didn’t even chuckle but neither did she take her eyes off the screen. “Oh, that? Don’t worry, babe, I don’t think he’ll really run for president again, I just meant if he did…”
“No, it’s not that… about having kids.”
The noise suddenly stopped as Mona hit pause. She looked at Ellie who was still holding the cup underneath her chin.
“Yeah?”
“Well… how do we go about it?”, Ellie asked meeting her gaze, her deep brown eyes holding another question.
“How do you wanna go about it?” Mona was unexpectedly solemn, the gravity of her resolve making Ellie now feel how real it all was.
“I was thinking… maybe I could get pregnant? Or you could! Or maybe… I could do it now and you do it the second time around?”
“The second time around?”, Mona arched her eyebrows, a mix of surprise and amusement lighting up her face. “What if we have the little fucker and decide we’re done with parenthood?”
“Babe, once we have ‘the little fucker’ we can never be done with parenthood. Ever.”, Ellie explained gently, tilting her head.
“I mean, I know, just… Let’s take it one baby at a time, okay?”, Mona chuckled, tracing Elie’s cheekbone with the back of her index finger. Elie closed her eyes, relaxing into her touch for a brief second. “Never wanted to be pregnant”, Mona continued, her eyes still glued to her wife’s face, her adoration now out in the open. “But I think I’d love to see you…”, she swallowed and lowered her hand, emotion suddenly too overwhelming.
Elie’s gaze softened as she leaned to plant a tender kiss on the corner of her mouth. Mona pulled back. She looked at her wife with that familiar mischief in her eyes, then she took the breakfast tray that was still between them and carefully placed it on the floor on her side of the bed. With that obstacle out of the way, Mona grabbed Elie’s waist in her arms and pulled her under the duvet, covering her neck with butterfly kisses.
“What, are we starting now?”, Ellie managed, laughter interrupting her sentence, as Mona’s kisses tickled and teased.
“Ha, yeah, I wish it worked like that.”
“Mmm… if it did, last night should’ve done the trick.”, Elie giggle, her voice breaking into a gasp as Mona gently bit below her jaw.

A Jeonghceol Domestic AU where they live in suburbia with their six year old son Chan. Jeonghan is an active member of the PTA, a soccer dad and chauffeur, and a supportive parent all around. His loving husband cares deeply for his passions and will follow him to the end of the world if it keeps him and his family happy. Follow their journey as they get caught up in fun and zany adventures when they fall outside of the guide lines of your average neighbor. Don’t really know where I’m going with this, but I want to see how many different domestic prompts I can get out of this AU before I run out of steam.
First Chapter
Previous Chapter
________________________________________________________________
It’s Monday. Chan usually doesn’t like Mondays all that much because they mean having to restart his routine of waking up too early and sitting through reading time for what seems like foreeeever. There’s no Saturday morning cartoons on Mondays and no Seungcheol-appa to cuddle with on the couch while they eat Cocoa Pebbles. But today is a special Monday. Why?
Because he is officially turning seven years old today!
He doesn't feel any different. Not yet anyway. But he's excited, nonetheless. He likes holidays. All kinds of holidays because most of them only come once a year. And this is the one time a year he gets a holiday all to himself.
At school, Jeonghan shows up right before lunch time with two rectangular boxes nestled close to his chest and a red tote bag hanging off his shoulder. The classroom instantly goes mum at the spectacle before them, thrilled whispers and inconspicuous glances being passed around the room. They know the drill.
They’re all getting really good at math so they can easily spot the solution to this equation. If they sang Happy Birthday to Chan at the start of the class and his parent comes to the classroom during lunch time, then the boxes in his hands must be cupcakes! It happens often enough for them to know, but the excitement never really wears off.
“I can help you, Mr. Choi!”
“No, me!”
“I can get the napkins!”
The kids jump at the opportunity to help hand out the goodies. It’s a great feeling because Jeonghan knows in a few years, it’ll be torture just asking for a simple chore to get done. For now, he revels in the kindness that they exude and smiles the same gentle smile that won them over during the first fundraiser event he’d helped with.
Chan gets out of his seat, running to his dad. He hugs his thighs and Jeonghan has to re-balance himself to make sure the cupcakes don’t go flying due to the sheer magnitude of the impact. Chan showing public affection? He’s put aside his childhood bravado just for this sweet moment and Jeonghan couldn’t be more soft for it.
“Please stay in your seats. I’ll choose a couple of you to hand out napkins and Mr. Choi and I will pass out the cupcakes.” Their teacher calls out to the class. Chan is reluctant to pull away but thinks about getting a red sticker on his birthday. He would hate hate hate getting a red sticker any day for not listening and even more if its on this day so he scurries off to his table and plops back down in his mustard yellow, plastic seat. He is beaming at his dad with rose dusted cheeks as his classmates say happy birthday to him and high five him from where they sit. He loves the attention even if he still gets shy sometimes.
Once they’re back settled and the two designated helpers pass out all of the napkins to each kid, Jeonghan and the teacher divide and conquer. Jeonghan was smart and decided to purchase cupcakes that were as uniform as possible. He knows how picky kids can be and wanted to avoid arguments over who got what.
Chan gets first pick though and his table is glad to have the birthday boy in their assigned group because that means they get next pick. Jeonghan and the teacher go table by table, weaving between the chattering children bouncing in their chairs. The chirped thank you’s rang out in high pitched squeals as they dug into the sugary sweet cupcakes, blue frosting staining their tongues. (Probably the best kind of treats are ones that can be shown off by their visual residue).
As they eat and talk amongst themselves, Chan’s teacher starts up a conversation with Jeonghan standing shoulder to shoulder, looking out across the classroom. “Thank you for coming in today. The kids just seem to adore you, Mr. Choi.” The teacher is a bit new and exultant in her teaching methods. She hasn’t been beaten down by the hardships that come along with the job yet so every moment she sees the kids smile is a win in her book.
“I do my best. I love kids. In another life, I could see myself as a teacher at a school like this one.” He laughs to himself thinking about how completely exhausted he’d be with small aged children filling up every corner of his life. It’s not much different from now only he doesn’t have to deal with the responsibility that accompanies teaching at a public school.
“I could see that too. Chan is always talking about you and your partner like you’re the best things that ever happened to him. We’re so lucky to have Chan and you both as his supporters. He’s got lots of friends here and he’s such a cheerful kid.”
Jeonghan, try as he may, is unable to stop the proud smile from spreading across his reddening face. He feels his ears tingle, looking at the ground to avoid the eyes of the grateful woman.
“Thank you. I feel secure with him in your care.” He nods his head in mutual appreciation. He definitely doesn’t pop in to the classroom nearly as much as he did in the beginning of the year when he couldn’t trust any teacher to govern over his one and only child for such a significant portion of the day. He thinks she’s done well.
She reminds the class that they should RSVP to Chan’s birthday party by tomorrow after Jeonghan mentions it in their casual talk. She also gives her thanks to Jeonghan for giving an invite to every kid as feeling left out in this age is such a saddening thing to see on a child’s face. Invitations were handed out a week ago and Chan was happy to report that everyone seemed eager.
They close out the mini celebration with Chan being wished happy birthday one more time in a cacophonous harmony. Jeonghan kneels and gives him a quick kiss on his forehead before the now seven-year-old decides it’s too embarrassing. The extra cupcakes are left for the other teachers Chan might want to share with and Jeonghan hands over some extra hand sanitizer bottles and tissues he bought for the classroom. The teacher thanks him once more and he’s off.
Chan still has a couple hours left of school so he decides to stop by a Michael’s craft store to avoid the drive back home just to turn around and fight traffic back. There’s still shopping to do for the vast decorations he has yet to gather. He was so inspired, he even made a moodboard from various Pinterest posts he’d come across. Chan wanted a Jurassic Park theme and it allowed Jeonghan to let his creativity set sail.
He’d picked up the plates, cups, and utensils all in a convenient party pack from Party City along with table cloths and enough supplies to craft some pretty kick ass goodie bags. What he’s most excited about though is the zookeeper outfits they’d come across. It took lots of asking around, but they’d found some. The adult size was definitely going to fit Seungcheol better than himself (He was biased. He thought Seungcheol was smoking in everything he wore), but it worked out well enough that when they all stood together, they looked like they were off on an expedition, slashing through vines and palm fronds deep in the jungle. Chan loved it (He was biased. He loved everything).
He’d also already ordered the “party hats”. Of course, they weren’t any regular party hats. If Jeonghan had been any regular person or a part of any regular family then maybe he would have done the regular thing. BUT he’s Yoon Jeonghan and decided that the “party hats” would in fact be Safari hats and made sure to order them in bulk early.
So now he’s pushing a cart through the crowded aisles of Michael’s with Jisoo balanced between his head and his shoulder, speaking animatedly through his cell phone.
“You invited the entire class and the soccer team?” Josh stresses. He wishes Jeonghan would have mentioned the number of expected guests before he signed on for this project.
“It’s not that bad. Not everyone will show up. You know how these things go.” Jeonghan shrugs his shoulder as if the other can see him, brushing off his questioning tone. He’s cutting his eyes back and forth between two very different styles of leaves. Leaves larger than his head surround him in the plastic flowers section. He picks up a handful of both under the guise that the jungle has many different types of plants. He doesn’t have to be climatically accurate. These children won’t be able to tell the difference when they’re maxed out on sugar.
“It’s Valentine’s weekend. Literally everyone is coming because parents are going to dump them for a few hours of alone time.”
“Oh… I forgot to get Valentine cards for the class. Thanx for the reminder.” Jeonghan answers, his mind drifting a few aisles down to where he remembers inflated, pink balloons and mega stuffed teddy bears. He considers getting one for Seungcheol. Seungcheol’s a lot softer than he looks.
“Hannie… This is going to be really expensive… Seungcheol does know all that you’ve planned right?”
“Yah! Stop scolding me. I’m a grown man.” Jeonghan feigns exasperation, but he bursts into a fit of giggles before he can finish. “It’s fine. I’ve been saving up. And don’t try and turn my husband against me. He’s very much so on board with me…” He mumbles after, “…sort of.”
“So on top of helping you set up, you’re calling me in to babysit too.”
“It’ll be fun. Your daughter and Chan can have a play date while we get ready and she’ll pretty much babysit herself at the party. It’ll be great.”
~~~~
Great is an understatement.
From the front of their home, much isn’t revealed to the expectant children being dropped off. In fact, the house is still difficult to find due to the 50 other ones built with the exact same model. What sets it apart are the shiny apple red and onyx black balloons tied to the mailbox and the sign hanging on the door saying, “Welcome to Jurassic Park”.
The kids are met at the door by Jeonghan (the responsible one who is actually paying attention to the doorbell) and are led through the simple living room, hopping along plastic dinosaur tracks that are set out. The sliding door leading to the backyard is opaque, covered in a dark backdrop, obscuring the view to the party happening just on the other side. But they can hear music and laughter and the anticipation balls up and rolls through their tummies.
When the door finally draws opens, it attracts them in like a beacon, beckoning forth the tiny adventurers into the wonderful world of dinosaurs. Joshua stands at the entryway with safari hats to hand out. It’s such a funny thing to see the kids blank, sensory spasms making it hard to decide what to avert their attention to first.
There’s greenery everywhere and it truly feels like their own little contained jungle. Wooden planks jut out on display with caution tape strategically draped over them; the fraying at the tips looks like they’d been ripped through. Beware posters tie in the setting.
A table is filled with snacks and foods all made to fit the theme. White chocolate covered pretzels transform into dinosaur bones, doughnut holes dusted with sugar mimic unhatched eggs. Pudding cups with dirt-like, cookie crumbles sprout miniscule palm trees and the tiniest dinosaur figurines. And there’s chicken nuggets! There’s a tyrannosaurus and brachiosaurus and some other saurus they still can’t pronounce. Seungcheol has the grill going and the smoke makes it look like a volcano has erupted in the background.
And is that… a bounce house? In the backyard?!?!
(Jeonghan may or may not have rented that one without Seungcheol’s knowledge but when the crew came knocking to set it up, there was little he could do to argue about it.)
And yes, Jeonghan will admit he outdid himself this time, but he was damn proud of his work. They all were impressed. “You should consider party planning. This looks great!”, his husband said in awe when he’d seen the finish product of Jeonghan’s creation. But with great power comes great responsibility. And responsibility brought big headaches.
The night before, he got the minimum amount of sleep preparing. Everyone helped, but once it got late, he coerced them into bed while his hyperactive, perfectionist mind fussed over the most minute details. He’d ended up finishing the goodie bags, creating labels for the food and pre-made all the snacks he could get away with. He’d hit the bed at around 4 a.m. and woke up hours later to get the backyard ready. On top of mild sleep deprivation, the inevitable over protective side of him resurfaced as the children ran freely, playing make believe. He was stressed™.
“You look like you need a nap.” Joshua sidles up next to him, poking his cheek.
“I just want everything to be perfect.” He admits with a sigh and a tired smile.
Joshua pans over the immaculate scene of their movie-set-ready layout. Seungcheol cooking on the grill as he nods along to the music, the kids—Chan cheesing so hard, letting forth such an innocent, unbridled laugh that breaks the heavens open to let pure sunlight spill down upon them.
Joshua thinks this is perfect. The party. Their family.
“You’re doing amazing. Everyone is enjoying themselves. You should too.” Joshua rubs his hand on his shoulder in a comforting manner. “I’m listening out for the door, go talk to Seungcheol and grab something to eat. Relax.”
Jeonghan takes his advice.
He opens his mouth to say something and instead gets it filled with a piece of meat hot off the grill.
“I just finished up. How’s it taste?” Seungcheol already knows the answer but asks anyway with a knowing smirk.
“It’s haa… Whew. It’s hot.” Jeonghan speaks around the beef burning his tongue. The flavor is savory, but when he says hot off the grill he means it in its entirety. “Yummy.”
Seungcheol kisses him on the cheek, pulling him into a side hug with one arm loosely around his waist.
“I can’t believe I’m really going to do this.” Seungcheol speaks after a minute of watching the kids play.
“It’s really adorable what you’re doing. They’re going to love it.”
“Sure hope so.”
“Hurry up and go! I wanna cut the cake.” He honestly doesn’t mind what time the cake gets cut. The younger brunette is finally starting to relax and knows that this portion of his day will be the most iconic. Although Jeonghan had planned the majority of this party, Seungcheol planned something of his own. And this one was a surprise.
“Oh no! Kids watch out!” Jeonghan shouts a warning to the crowd playing in the patch of grass. They all look up, startled and Jeonghan makes sure he has the camera rolling.
In less than a second, their attention focuses in on the person(?) standing by the sliding door. It’s…
A dinosaur?
They don’t move or speak for a second.
And then they hear a roar. The dinosaur darts out toward their huddle. They scatter, screaming like they’re being chased by an actual creature and not a grown man in an inflatable dinosaur suit. Screams melt into giggles and the laughter builds as the kids continue to run away from who they’ve now realized is just some clumsy person fumbling around in a costume.
Chan doesn’t know who it is until the dinosaur trips over its own feet, landing ungracefully in the grass. His yelp is distinguishable even between the screams and laughs and music.
“Daddy!” Chan runs up to the dinosaur, any possibility of him being afraid flying out the window. By the time Seungcheol finds his way back up, Chan runs into his legs with a tight hold. It sends the dinosaur back to the ground and soon all the kids are piling up on the lump of dino dad roaring unconvincingly.
Joshua and Jeonghan stand by each other, every single second of it caught on video. They’re holding their stomachs with how hard they’re laughing. He imagines this being one of those clips that end up on AFV.
It takes a while to get everyone to calm down. Eventually, they make it to the table to eat and sing happy birthday and share slices of cake. Pictures were taken. So many pictures. And the night ends with children slowly being picked up while they cuddle around the couch and watch the latest Jurassic World movie.
Right before Chan falls asleep, he pulls both of his dads in for a hug, an arm around the neck of each.
“Thank you for the best day ever.” He yawns with the same smile he’s adorned all day. Truly, it hasn’t left his face once.
Jeonghan thinks he can finally rest now. A successful weekend it was.
~~~
Finally got to posting the birthday chapter on here. Tumblr has... changed? There’s not a function to add a line to separate things anymore??? Oof. I’m on twitter now :) @eottoghe

Race Recap: Glass City Marathon
Tumblr media
When I look back at this marathon, most of what I remember is the before and the after.
As we all know--because I have nattered on about it ENDLESSLY--I went into this race feeling under trained and injured. I took off from running for three full weeks to let my hip heal up. I ran six miles the Thursday before and then another three on Friday. I spent endless hours at the pool and in spin class to try to keep my fitness up. In the end, it sort of worked? You tell me.
Because I went in not feeling like I was 100% even going to run, I took a pretty lackadaisical approach to the whole weekend. I barely looked up anything in Toledo other than the address of the airbnb, I sort of threw random running gear into my bag the night before my flight and realized that I had lost my Body Glide and water bottles.”Oh well,” I thought, “I’m sure the expo will have some,” Thank God I had thought to buy gels, “just in case.”
Tumblr media
Basically, I turned from a type-A into a type-Z person in the space of 24 hours and it was very weird.
I flew into Detroit on Saturday morning and ubered up to @elkay723‘s parents’ house where I met the lovely @er1nruns and @goaldengoats! Unfortunately for them, I was sort of tired from my early flight so I think I was in a little bit of zombie mode.
We headed out to Toledo in the early afternoon and over to the expo. It was small and cozy but luckily there was a vendor selling Body Glide and a little magnetic bottle I could attach to my running belt! I was saved! It was at the expo where I really decided, “okay, I’m going to do this and just see what happens.” I mean, I was there already, right? And people have run marathons on way less training (so I told myself).
After the expo, we grabbed lunch at a brewery and then headed to the airbnb.
Oh the airbnb. I am shamed, I can never book a place again. It ended up being in a not-great neighborhood which was unnerving. Additionally, the third bedroom had replaced it’s “queen bed” with an air mattress. Which I thought was going to be fine until I tried sleeping on it. Reader, it was not fine. It was COLD and very uncomfortable.
 So basically, I ended up compounding a little sleep deprivation from the night before with a LOT of sleep deprivation. But I did get about four hours of sleep before it was time to get up and GO!
I had brought some throwaways with me that I wore to the starting line, including a pair of knee high socks to wear as arm warmers. I ended up dropping my pants and sweatshirt before the race even started and the socks got thrown during my first mile. It wasn’t warm yet but it wasn’t cold enough either.
My race plan was to stick with the 3:30 pacer until I couldn’t anymore. I had trained for a 3:20 but I knew that was totally out of the question given the condition I felt I was in. Even a 3:30 was going to be pushing it but I figured I could at least try to hit somewhere around there and be happy.
The first few miles passed quickly. The pace group I was in was VERY chatty. It was a good distraction although I did wonder if those people were so good they could keep that up all race or if they would eventually stop. I started feeling tired in mile three which was annoying but it was better than feeling hurt!
It was around mile 7, I think, that the split for the half marathon runners came up. I debated with myself if I should take it or keep going. My body was feeling okay though, and I had my phone on my in case I dropped out later, so I kept going.
The course was flat and wound around the nicer neighborhoods before going into a park. Inside the park, we hit a split that said Lap 1 and pointed right with Lap 2 pointing left so I knew that I was going to come through the area again. After the park, around mile 10, we hit an open road and that’s where the headwinds started. It wasn’t bad but it was noticeably harder to keep my pace up which was discouraging as I felt mile 10 was way too early for me to feel like this was hard.
By mile 16 the chatter around me had stopped but I hit a sort of second wind which was nice. I also told myself, just one hard tempo run left! At this point, I felt pretty good, if tired, and thought that I might actually pull off a little bit of a miracle.
Alas, it was not to be. When we entered the park again we hit some sort of slats and did a sort of zig-zagging and that’s when I started fading. By mile 21, my legs were starting to feel really sore and that’s when I knew I wasn’t going to be able to keep up with the pace group anymore.
Those last five miles were some of the longest and hardest miles I think I’ve run in a long time. But I knew, if I stopped, I wouldn’t be able to keep going. I tried walking through aid stations and almost toppled over at one point. So I just had to shuffle along.
The last mile and a half wind you through the University of Toledo’s campus to the finish at the stadium. Of course, you can HEAR the finish line the entire time. I literally considered cutting the parking lot just to be done (I KNOW. I DIDN’T).
As we came up towards the stadium. I did my best to punch up the run a little. Then I heard someone who was already wearing a medal say something like: “don’t try to go faster, you’re almost done, you can’t do anything anymore.” or similar. WTF DUDE. Thanks for your TERRIBLE and really condescending advice?
Finally, finally, I came up into the stadium, heard the announcer say my name and did my best to not walk until I was over the finish line. Erin and Sarah came down cheering and screaming my name and I don’t think I could even talk to them. My legs were stiff as boards and every. single. part. of my body hurt. I just tried to walk it off as best as I could. I forced myself to drink some water but there was no way I could eat.
Unfortunately, my death hobble around made me miss @elkay723‘s PR FINISH! INCREDIBLE! Both she and @er1nruns got to ring the PR bell that day!
Tumblr media
(stolen from @goaldengoats)
Once we had all recovered somewhat, we headed to the airbnb to shower and get the hell outta there. Brunch was when I regained my appetite--probably helped by the delicious avocado toast I had there.
Then, the social part of the weekend wound down. Erin and Sarah had to fly back home and I was dropped off at the airport hotel.
After all that, I think I went to bed around 8:30. I had a 4am wake up anyways because of course, I am a masochist and had to make sure I could work a full day the next morning.
It literally took me a full five days to walk like a normal human again. I made my boyfriend carry my luggage up the stairs to the bedroom. I have NEVER been so sore in my life.
In the end, I’m both really proud and disappointed in myself. On the one hand. I can’t believe I pulled off not even my worst marathon time but also a tiny BQ! On the other hand, that was not the experience or time that I had trained for and unfortunately, my time is not going to get me into Boston in 2019.
I don’t want to try to PR again this year. I think NYC is going to be too crowded for a PR and I don’t want to run three marathons in one year. So, the goal is to stop getting injured and try again next year.
Here are the stats!

LLC day 6
Higher calorie/carb day. Instead of following her recipes on saturdays I decided to make this a “do it yourself” day where I follow her macros but eat whatever I have in the fridge. These plans always have so many leftover veggies etc and I didn’t want anything to go to waste. I’m trying to be proactive! Also then if I want a burger or something then this is my day to do it.
I’m super proud of myself. I’m almost done a week and I have done an incredible job. Usually by now I would have gone off the rails. It’s tough when I’m stoned not too. My body loves that sugar, especially when I’m sad. And as me and the man I thought I’d grow old and die with broke up a month ago, I’ve been pretty sad. I’m excited for what my future holds, but my heart is broken and I have to grieve. It’s hard when you love someone with every fibre of your being but they just aren’t what you’re meant to have. The universe has different plans for me, and than plan takes me further in my education and far from here.
Morning 20 minute run= complete.
It’s a beautiful day!!! I used to love running more than anything. Especially treadmill running. You don’t even have to think on a treadmill. You can literally just turn your brain off and keep going forever. Outside however is a different story. And it’s kicking my ass haha. Lots of mental chatter on these “mindful runs” but I’ve only gone out three times so I’m sure by next month I’ll be crushing it:)
For breakfast I’m going to have a smoothie because this program has the absolute yummiest smoothies.
One of my meals will be honey soy chicken because it was god damn amazing and I have left overs.
Then I don’t know, I have to plan it all out still!
I hope everyone has a great day💛
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I seen that graffiti on my run! It’s new and I love it!
Man I had my biggest carb intake planned for dinner by making homemade baked sweet potato fries, but my sweet potato was rotten inside. So I mashed a bunch of shit together to try and get my intake for the day.
Tumblr media
I did as best as I could. That’s a lot more carbs than what I’m used to.
Anyways, day went great! Got lots done and had another great day of LLC. Tomorrow is one week whoop whoop!

Dominoes
Hey everyone! This is just another little story I wrote, based on the same prompt as the last. Any feedback or opinion on which is better would be adored!
           It started off corny. It was something silly, like something out of a cheap rom-com. If you’d seen her that day, and had previously known my sister, you’d have to agree that from the back they looked like twins that day. Dirty blonde hair, round shoulders, faded black jeans. Of course, there were subtle differences, although I wouldn’t notice them until much later. Her version of dirty blonde was just a bit filthier, her sleeves ending a stitch higher on her shoulders, and my sister always wore Levi’s, while she wore Hype.
        If you’ve ever had a younger sibling, you know the type of thought that went through my mind. Us older siblings have a reputation for being indifferent and on the border of mean. What we never tell you is that it’s all in good fun, and that secretly the younger sibling enjoys it to a degree (even if sometimes they don’t realize that they do.).
        We hadn’t seen each other in roughly two weeks, if my memory hasn’t decayed as badly as some say it has. The opportunity to pull a jumpscare like something out of those old horror games was irresistible. So I snuck up on my tiptoes, looking like something out of the saturday cartoons. My hands pushed on her shoulders and I yelled in my most obnoxious child-like voice: “BOO!”
She jumped in shock (looking almost as if someone had literally taken a wire and shocked her), and turned to face me. My cheeks almost  immediately began to hurt from the smiling, from the roaring laughter being emitted from my lips. My stomach followed suit, until I got a better look at her. My stomach switched gears and began to do flips, and my cheeks began to burn.
This girl was a total stranger.
She considered me with a look I can only describe as being somewhere between curious and confused, with an undeniable hint of what-the-heck-are-you-doing added in. To my surprise, she then grinned, eyebrows still furrowed, and let out a cautious laugh, her nose crinkling the whole time.
“What was that?” She asked, one eyebrow raised with interest (That eyebrow raising would later be something she’d try to teach me. I’d fail, of course.)
I stumbled over my tongue, searching desperately for words. What should one say after something like this? Should I laugh too? Walk away? After realizing that my silence was making the conversation more awkward than it already was, I managed to think of a sentence.
“You looked like my sister. Sorry.”
It’s strange what can start something big. How a chance encounter (especially cheap rom-comesque ones) can trigger long chains of events. Our fate was one of dominoes, and that day the first one fell.
As far as we knew, we had nothing in common,  nothing but this one experience; this one strange, silly, childish experience. Of course, it didn’t take much more than that. We got lunch together, sandwiches from a corner store (I only remember that from the spilling of vinegar on my sandwich onto what was, at the time, my favorite hoodie). In some ways, it was a bit less like a cheesy romance novel than it had started out as. We weren’t obsessed with each other at first sight. That first lunch was void of flirtatious chatter, no subtle touches, no lingering eye contact. All we knew was that we were both in college, both came from families with high expectations, and both enjoyed sandwiches (I also found out that she doesn’t enjoy vinegar, although she’d always finish my sandwiches for me anyways.) We were friends, and that’s all. We made a habit of going out to lunch, and for a long time, that’s what our relationship consisted of.
It wasn’t until after about a year that…”something” happened. We got our sandwiches and sat down, as was the custom by then. I then went to the bathroom. I was only about a minute, and when I came back she was already halfway done with her sub. She urged me to hurry up and eat. I nodded and took what my five year old would now call a “big boy bite”. I didn’t notice at first. There was the crunch of the lettuce, zing of the vinegar, fleshy turkey taste. But there was something else. Something creamy, although definitely not my usual mustard. Smooth, but gross, something like lotion.
And that’s exactly what it was. She saw my face turn and screeched with laughter, turning heads in the store as she giddily sputtered out:
“T-THAT’S...THAT’S LOTION!”
I gagged at the words and began to spit the stuff out. I found myself laughing along with her, despite being genuinely disappointed that such a good sandwich had been wasted. And so began a more rapid falling of the dominoes. It was our little game, our inside joke. The things we did varied. One day, I gave her a sip of “water” (white vinegar). Another, she gave me a water bottle full of rum (and peroxide). And of course, to make time for the game we began to hang out at more than just lunch. Weekends, days off, anything that fit into our schedules. Some of my friends called her my girlfriend, whereas we didn’t call each other anything. Still, people perceived sparks between us, especially when she moved in with me.
I don’t remember whose idea it was to move in together, or if we even discussed it at all. All I have are vague recollections of her just being there one day, and me being okay with it. And of course, like a stereotypical dare-gone-wrong movie, our game intensified. She left a spider on my face while I was sleeping, I left baby powder in her favorite beanie. She hid my homework, I stole her makeup. And so on, of course. It was always fun, and while inevitably it went too far at times, we always made amends.
It was the night before April Fool’s Day. As you can imagine, at this time of year it was critical to get in the most hilarious and absurd pranks. I was sure I had her beat at dinnertime, after all, who could handle ghost pepper sauce? Meals were always a cherished time for trickery, and giving her a burger with some of the hottest sauce known to man seemed as good a prank as any. That was, of course, until I bit into my own burger, and after a moment felt as though I’d been French kissing a dragon. She’d been a step ahead, and had switched our burgers.
I went to bed that night with a sore tongue and even sorer attitude. The next day, I knew my reputation in this game was dependent upon my next move. I stayed up that night, staring at the ceiling and trying to block out the sound of the city outside. I listened for snoring, soft snores that she denied making but that I knew she did anyways. And by the time I heard them, my plan had been formulated.
It seemed simple, but far from innocent. I knew that she always left first in the morning, much earlier than I did (5:00, to be exact). The hallway outside of our apartment was hard and smooth, already just a bit slippery. I stayed up until 4:45, and then snuck out, restraining myself from giggling at my genius. I poured the vegetable oil just outside the door, and then set up my phone’s camera, ready for it to capture the moment she would slip and slide just as she set her foot out the door. My trap set, I went to my bed and pretended to sleep.
She awoke at 5:00. She took her shower, she got dressed, just like any other morning. She attempted to wake me in vain, also just like any other morning. I smiled to myself as I heard her gentle footsteps padding towards the door. As expected, there was a loud bump. What was not expected was the two voices screaming. Hers I knew, but the other voice had age to it, a sort of depth that she lacked. I rushed and ran up to the door, one part curious and two parts terrified. There, in the doorway, was her, her hand over her mouth like that dramatic scene from every tragic movie I’ve watched since. On the outside was an older woman, a mother as I’d soon find out. And at their feet, a near black pool of scarlet oozing out of his head, was a little boy. A very still little boy.
The rest, as they say, is history. I have a record now. When I got out, she was not there to greet me. At the court I can still feel the sting of that mother’s slap, the bark of her words. It almost stung as much as the rum I’d taken to afterwards. And of course, I’ve moved on with my life. Found someone, started a family. Even managed to get a job (ironically, at a corner store). But that’s not to say it’s behind me. It never will be, of course. Previously, I hadn’t believed in fate, but how else could such a strange chance encounter have led to that? That one mistake, that silly trick, it tempted fate’s hand to begin the tipping. And when that last domino fell, so did I.

Hey all, Dani here.
Okay, so this post is a little bit later than usual. We just got home from Damian’s grandpa’s funeral. It was a long day of driving and waiting and all the emotion and everything that goes along with saying goodbye to a family member. He had a pretty good life, he went peacefully, and he had 73 years of a life of adventure and jokes. So, he will be missed, but there will always be good memories of him.
Anyway, welcome back to my weekly post where I talk about everything that we’ve played, watched, read, and done in the past week. We might as well just go ahead and get started with the post.
Okay, so I’ve played a little bit of Animal Crossing again in the past week. They added swimming and diving to what you can do. What makes that really amusing for me is that I chose a Southern Hemisphere island so while it is summer where I live in real life, in the game it is winter. So my little character is running around in the snow wearing a wet suit so she can jump in the ocean and look for sea creatures.
It’s time to talk about watches. I FINALLY SAW HAMILTON!!! Sorry for the all caps, but I have been wanting to see this show for four years now, and I could never afford the tickets, and I never had any luck with the lottery. Watching the filmed show on Disney+ was nice, but I definitely still want to see it live in a theater someday. Nothing can top the feeling and atmosphere of actually being in the room where it happens.
Let’s see. We finished watching season 4 of “Legends of Tomorrow” and decided to start a series re-watch of “Warehouse 13.” Oh, and I watched a little more of the first season of “Fruits Basket.”
Now let’s talk about reads that I’ve finished in the past week. I actually haven’t done a whole lot of reading over the past week. Okay fine, yes I’ve read something like 1500-ish pages, but I don’t know…reading 4 big volumes of manga just sometimes doesn’t feel like that big of an accomplishment. But maybe that’s just me being a bit too judgmental on myself. Anyway, I have completed Fruits Basket Collector’s Edition Vol 5 by Natsuki Takaya, Fruits Basket Collector’s Edition Vol 6 by Natsuki Takaya, Fruits Basket Collector’s Edition Vol 7 by Natsuki Takaya, and Fruits Basket Collector’s Edition Vol 8 by Natsuki Takaya. I am now 2/3 of the way through the series. I have to give a big shout-out to my local library for having all the volumes I don’t own available to be borrowed. It has made this binge-read possible.
As for current reads…oh boy, I’m in the middle of a lot of books. Let’s see if I can remember them all. I am reading The Fifth Season by N.K. Jemisin, Not Like the Movies by Kerry Winfrey, The Girl Who Could Move Sh*t With Her Mind by Jackson Ford, Blood of the Earth by Faith Hunter, and A Song of Wraiths and Ruin by Roseanne A Brown. I am enjoying all of them, but I think I’m having a case of ADD reading, because I’ll read a chapter or two out of one book and then just jump over to one of the others for no real reason. Like seriously, all of these books are great. Actually, the only one I haven’t bounced around on is Not Like the Movies, but I literally just picked it up at the bookstore yesterday and read it this morning while waiting for calling hours to start and then finish, so I’ve already made it halfway through the book. I might finish it tonight…or possibly tomorrow because I am pretty tired, and I still have to put in my couple hours of work for Colorworld tonight.
So when it comes to what I want to read next, well, obviously I definitely have plenty of books to finish reading at the moment, but I also already have an idea for what I’m going to read next.
A few of the books I’m reading are in preparation for an upcoming Colorworld LIVE panel, featuring authors Rachel E Kelly, Lance Conrad, and Russell Nohelty, which will take place on July 17th. Obviously I’m quite familiar with Rachel’s books, but I need to read at least a couple of Lance’s books, and I’m looking up Russell’s so I can try to squeeze one or two of those into my reading schedule. But I also have some books that I need to read for blog tour reviews and such, so I’m going to be pretty darn busy with reading this upcoming weekend. I should probably pick up some snacks and drinks and just have a 24 Hour Readathon day this weekend. Hmm…I might do that. Anybody want to join…say this upcoming Saturday, July 11th?
See? It’s a pretty decent stack. I have a lot to read. I still have another two weeks on the Fruits Basket volumes I borrowed from the library, but I would rather complete my binge-read and get those back to the library so they can sit in quarantine for a few days and then get back on the shelf so somebody else can read them.
All right. I think that’s enough random chatter from me. I have to go get to work now. But I would like to know…what are you reading right now? Let me know in the comments and I’ll be back soon with more bookish content.
Weekly Wrap-Up (72) Hey all, Dani here. Okay, so this post is a little bit later than usual. We just got home from Damian's grandpa's funeral.

Everything Is Lush And Green And Vibrantly Alive
It starts like this: a bright cheery May morning, the warm whiffs of wind full of lilacs from the yard and the fresh scent of my neighbor's prized roses. The same familiar birds here on the long branches of our oak trees suddenly seem to synchronize their a capella harmonies, the sound of their united tunes combine with the chatter of the little boys next door and the echoes of grandparents playing catch with their grandsons, like a symphony almost. Everything is lush and green and vibrantly alive. The earth seems to vibrate with energy and I am not tired though it is only 6am on a Saturday, and I have just four hours of sleep in me. I pulled a muscle in my neck from positioning my body in odd contortions while sharing my double bed with my sister and two cats last night. But none of that much matters because my sister is here from the hills of North Carolina and I'm happy to be awake and with her. I feel at home, really at home with her here.
And then I am violently awoken from this dream (which was my reality until just now), startled into position by some strong force of will that is not altogether benign. The moment is gone. Passed on, not to come along again. The air fills with negativity from the malcontent who was was my sister once; who she is now I do not know exactly, I just know sister doesn't convey the habitual and almost involuntary abuse and control she tries to wield over me.
"You're so selfish. It's not all about you, y'know? You're such an ass! Why do you have this stupid thing? Who wears black with brown anyway? What's wrong with you? What are you doing? I can't believe you don't want to see Shannyn's baby. Go get the soda for me. You better not be buying the cheap toilet paper. I can't believe you took such a big bite. I'd never do that to you (digs nails into the skin of my arm). Let's go! I didn't get up at 6:30 to be late! Why are you going this way? This is a stupid way to go. I hate cinnamon gum! Is that all you have? Why is it so hot in here? I can't believe you don't have a vent in your bathroom. Turn on the A/C! I'm hot. I don't care, my hormones are still out of wack from the pregnancy, remember? God, you don't have any money. What are we going to do all weekend? You only have one can of diet Pepsi? That's hilarious. I'm glad I asked. We have to stop at the store. You only have soy milk? Eew, your concoctions look disgusting. Gross! Your cats are so annoying. How do you put up with them? They kept me up all night. Where did you get this comforter? It's so Little House on the Prairie! God, you paid $50 for it? Why are your lights on so low? You can turn this up, y'know! I can't believe you didn't know what that was for! God, what are you going to do with a Master's degree in English anyway? What do you have to be stressed about? What do you have to keep track of anyway, you don't have a family or even a job!...." On and on it goes (and my sister has been here for eighteen hours). My sister is so hostile towards me. It hurts to be rejected and so disapproved of by the one soul I'd have hoped would have my back when no one else did--my twin sister. It seems the perfect match down to the same DNA, doesn't it stand to reason that we'd be made for each other, of each other? And yet it is simply not so. Intellectually I know I needn't take her abuse personally, but in my heart I know no other way to take it. It hurts. I don't know how to stop it from hurting except by not caring and I'm not there yet. Apathy, not rage is the opposite of love.
So here I stand, between rage and love, wanting apathy instead of this. Today (and every day) any mark of dissent is vehemently opposed by violent outbursts and uncontrollable rage. I don't know what to do with myself nor with this puddle of anger drawing higher and higher up around my ankles, my face overcome with pallidness, my heart heavy from the weight of expectation and resentment. My arms seem to cross as if by themselves, a protective stance assumes its place in my body. I feel not unlike myself, yet only moments ago after my acupuncture treatment I was literally abuzz with an energetic calmness, my spirit pulsing through me in a way I hadn't felt in a long time. One whiff of "sisterly love" washes over me and I can no longer feel my center.
Poof! So soon does it flee from me that it seems unlikely it was ever there to begin with. We are in the car again, driving to my brother's house and the mood is not good despite our chipper circumstances: balmy Saturday morning, the world spread out before us, coming off of a 90 minute deep tissue massage and a leisurely breakfast in the sun on the terrace at Einstein bagels. I know my sister will be here for only the briefest while, yet I cannot endure it. I don't know how to be--how to put my ego aside long enough to not react. I can't pretend this is okay any longer. This is not okay. It's not okay to be constantly berated in little and small ways. It's not okay to have a cell phone chucked at my head at full speed because the person on the other line isn't doing what my sister wants her to do, isn't saying the "right" thing to appease her and diffuse the rage that has taken over my sister's mind, body and soul and seriously seems to be controlling her from the inside out. No, none of this is okay anymore.
I cannot delude myself one second longer. This is not friendship. This is not love. There is no support. There is no sisterly compassion or understanding. There is no room for compromise or negotiation. There is only a hurt little girl so buried under rage and anger that the joy that is her middle name doesn't stand a chance at emerging over such muck and grime. There is no chance for a healthy relationship between sisters to be nurtured or reignited when it must first be borne of such rage and resentment and in such an unfortunate environment. I love my sister. I will always have a connection to her, my monozygotic other half. But I am finally standing up for myself and what is right for me. I no longer accept relationships with people who abuse me verbally, physically, emotionally or otherwise. Period. End of story. There is no more room for excuses or second or third or hundredth chances. I love my sister, it's true. But I love myself, too. And it's time for me to love myself enough to not endure that which is unendurable. The pain is simply too deep and the let down too damning. Why give disappointment full reign and resentment more room to fester? Why cry the same old sad song into the same tired ears of those who love me? Why?
I no longer know the answer.
And that is why it's time to stop this messiness with my sister. This is not love. This is not even the opposite of love. This is just anger and abuse and dysfunction clouding the vision of two people who love each other but are clearly not in a place to respond to the love that is buried under the mire of sadness, hurt and rage.
I forgive, but I have not forgotten. And forgiveness does not mean condoning bad behavior or purposefully putting oneself in the line of fire. To me, forgiveness is an opening in one's heart, a letting go of premeditated resentments and expectations of the other person. Forgiveness is a gift I give to myself--to let go of the weight of past resentments and past hurts and to begin to practice the art of acceptance and creative avoidance. I no longer go to the hardware store for milk. And that makes me feel a lot better because I no longer curse the fact that I can't get what I need there. I choose another place to get what I want and it's place I know always has an abundance of what I need in stock. There is no doubt there. And that makes life a lot simpler, and makes me a much healthier woman. The sad thing is that I still miss my sister, or perhaps it's more apt to say I miss the version of my sister I always imagine her to be. And even though that sister isn't exactly real, the pain of losing her or never actually having had her in the first place feels quite real, indeed. And that's the part of me that wants to sneak back into the hardware store to see, just one last time, if there isn't some milk there hidden between the hammers and the nails or tucked in between the light bulbs and extension cords. Just in case.
