Corrodi (1844-1905) was an Orientalist painter much appreciated at the time whose work developed mainly landscape paintings. He traveled a lot and portrayed scenes of daily life in the Middle East, Greece and Corsica. The painting in the picture was made in the last months of his life and depicts, in a beautiful nocturnal landscape, the ascent to the sacred Mount Athos of a small group of Greek monks.
