“It… depends, dora dor.”

Kyuusei sat at the edge of a stream not far from Bel’amath, poking a stick into the meandering water and lamenting that she’d left her fishing gear back at the Shady Sanctuary. Silvered eyes glanced at the querent, then returned to the shallow water.

“During all this,” she explained, one hand gesturing to the overarching boughs of Amirdrassil, “my kills were clean. Not so much about trying to minimize suffering. They wanted to give the legacy of all those souls to the Flame, and I didn’t have much mercy for that. But most of the time I needed to be quick.”

Kyuu dropped her hand and brought a finger to her lips, a hint of fang in her lopsided grin. “And quiet. I wasn’t on the front lines for that fight, hrm?”

“But years back, around the Fourth War? I was still a little lost in Ashamane’s gift after what happened in Hyjal. And cats... like to toy with their prey.”

She went back to poking her stick at the water. “Not long after Brennadam, I hunted a Horde raiding party on the edges of Stormnsong Valley. Just three of them. The first two died fast enough when I caught them by surprise, but the third? She was a mage, and I stalked and harried her for more than an hour, following the scent of blood in the tall grass. I even let her try to conjure a portal twice, just to break the spell at the last moment. My claws were on her chest when she died. I watched her eyes as they went dark, smelled her last breath. It was curiosity as much as anything, a question someone had asked me a few nights earlier that I had to answer for myself.”

“I’m not so lost now.” A brief echo of her lopsided grin touched her lips, “But I never forget the scent of blood in the tall grass…”

After reading one of your responses, I'm curious about the process Eligos took to turning Viera: Was it a plot run with others? When you rolled, was it a branching point during that plot or was it all you and a set of dice?

It wasn't a plot run with others, as most others I'd been writing with were vehemently opposed to me dropping Eligos in favor of a random Viera, let alone the idea of altering Eligos in any fashion, even though I'd been struggling with him. Not that running a plotline with others with potential of killing off a character would have gone well, had I gone that route. Especially given situation at that time. Rather, I selected a series of potential incidents in a timeline, and wrote down ahead of time what the fail rates would be before writing for Eligos, and then rolling at incidents in question to see how well he'd hold up. It really didn't matter in a sense, he rolled multiple 1s in a row there, only succeeding in any of the rolls at the very last two checks. While I was initially hesitant to do so since I was still struggling with him, I decided in the end I'd run with it. It made for extra trauma for Eligos and some comedy as well as he adjusted to his new life and having to clean up the literal wreckage from his old one.

While I can run plots with others, I haven't considered doing so for a long time, due to the nightmare that is scheduling. I might again if I find myself in position to, but that's hardly on the list of goals at this time due to how thinly I already find myself stretched. I still have to finish writing a Lancers RPG campaign and build a few model kits before I'll be in a spot where I can try to find folks interested in tolerating Eligos long enough to run any sort of plotline!

6. What is your darkest fear about writing?

jesus christ we're coming out of the gate STRONG with this bad boy.

i guess my chronic writing-related fear is that the stories i create are either objectively not good or just completely irrelevant and frankly said fear haunts my every waking moment. no biggie tho.

8. If you had to write an entire story without either action or dialogue, which would you choose and how would it go?

i would choose dialogue. DIALOGUE DIALOGUE DIALOGUE because i Love It So Much and have found ways to utilize a dialogue-only strategy for ~*~artistic purposes~*~ in my writing before ala the break-up scene in band au chapter one. so i think it would just be a very abbreviated version of my typical writing style in that i already do tend to lean very heavily on using dialogue to highlight character/plot development and to discuss themes & conflict. it would just lack a lot of the glimpses into the characters' interior lives and like. sick descriptions of haunted spaceships.

24. How much prep work do you put into your stories? What does that look like for you? Do you enjoy this part or do you just want to get on with it?

itttttt really depends on the fic. i will say that some projects i've done, because of the nature of the setting or the plot structure, just don't require a lot of research or planning. for example, something like the friends with benefits oneshot i wrote that has somehow become my most popular shiita fic required little to no storyboarding/world-building because it was a character piece set in the naruto canon. but obviously You Know Who required SIGNIFICANTLY more effort because i was sitting down to write a series that was going to take place over a period of about five years AND i was working with a canon that i had only the slightest familiarity with.

for the most part, i do tend to put more emphasis on making sure character beats are authentic and relationship development is impactful than always have 100% accuracy to any canon or setting i'm working with (see my perhaps laughable lack of detail to most things music-related in band au, because that's just Not The Point at the end of the day), but when that attention to detail IS needed to really make said character beats land (like in jurassic world au, for example) i will make a serious effort to nail them down. when that effort is necessary, i do tend to enjoy it, because a lot of time learning more about a world will give me ideas on how to flesh out plot points i'd only thinly conceived of in passing (read: literally 80% of star trek au, which can be credited to me opening random articles on the star trek fanwiki and going 'hey that sounds neat' and throwing it in).

32. What is a line from a poem/novel/fanfic etc that you return to from time and time again? How did you find it? What does it mean to you?

(cw for vague descriptions of implied homophobia/substance abuse/mental illness)

a part of me is deeply tempted to cheat and say literally all of far from born again by mediest, because that fic has haunted my brain like a ghost since the moment i read it a few years ago. it's honestly one of the most searing and uncomfortably real/relatable portrayals of mental illness and addiction that i've ever read, and there are parts of that fic that genuinely make me feel like someone took an ice cream scoop to my heart and started carving out bits--but, like, in a fun way. the part that i will highlight, though, is this bit from the first chapter:

Are you in a relationship? Have you always been interested in men? Those past girlfriends, were they just PR? How do you think this will affect your work? Here’s a guy who says the two of you hooked up at a nightclub—care to comment? Do you think you’re pulling focus away from your talent by making the conversation all about your sexual preferences? Do you think audiences will be able to see you as a believable leading man after this? Sylvain’s career hits a brick fucking wall. Directors lose interest. Interest among journalists remains volcanic. They want to know where he’s going. They want to know how he’s feeling. They want to know who he’s fucking. They want to watch him implode? Sylvain’s a people-pleaser. He’ll give them what they fucking want.

because it's both SUCH a fucking great way to end a chapter and also really captures that almost addictive high you get when you just. blow your whole life up in a way that i hadn't read/felt before. so yeah! if you like fire emblem three houses PLEASE read this fic (with caution) because it's a masterpiece and also it burned my house down. i love it.

The moonflower is the ipomoea alba, sometimes called the tropical white morning-glory or moon vine. Flowers with small white blooms and pale green leaves have been a symbol in a lot of Kyuusei's stories.

And Time's Scar is from the Chrono Cross OST - but the very best version was performed live in Boston by the Video Game Orchestra in 2014.

✼ When it comes to worldbuilding, what are some ideas you’d like to explore in rp?

World of Warcraft's a high fantasy setting, full stop. Even a simple farmer from Westfall has seen elementals and mages and undead. Orcs and Draenei are literally from other worlds. It's nigh impossible not to know about things like the Scourge or the Legion. The existence of gods (or at least god-like beings) is a known fact. A massive sentient dragon has laid waste to large portions of the world in very recent history. The list goes on and on (even if you choose to mostly ignore Shadowlands.)

Despite all this, so much RP is little more than "I'm a human, and I've got a GUN." (insert gunshits here.) Elves are played like humans with pointy ears and glowy eyes. Draenei are ditzy fish-out-of-water with "moose and squirrel" accents. And so on. Low fantasy at best. Or if some of the high fantasy aspects are embraced, it's more like Marvel super heroes.

The worldbuilding I want to explore in RP is RP that explores the world and setting, that places its roots into the fact that all these things have existed for tens of thousands of years. They're part of the weft and weave of existence, and not some recent addition. Despite this, there are still ancient powerful things that our muses don't and can't really understand.

It's difficult to find though, especially to find consistently and in number enough to have a community for collaborative storytelling. It's easier to "stick with what you know" and do low fantasy, or the other extreme of Mary Sue/Gary Stu characters with All The Special. Balance is hard.

But I'll keep trying, and plunking away with the like minds I find. 'cause y'all are out there…

7. what’s one thing you could improve on?

It may be my language barrier, but I feel I tend to use always the same terms and words, while there are so many synonims that could allow me to give a better feeling of what I try to describe. All composed verbs like "trailed after" or "clambered on" or things like that. They don't come spontaneous, but the more I read books in English, the better it gets. I keep a notepad with me to write them down.

8. what’s one thing you think you’re good at?

Dialogues? I've been told I am good at them, and in general with characterizations. And... I don't know, I might sound cocky, but I do think I am good at writing. Not a talent, but good, especially in the norms of roleplay where you're always supposed to give a 'bait' to your mutual to keep the story going. I have noticed is not as common as I thought.

21. what’s one fandom that terrifies you and why?

Oh, wow, I don't know if I've ever been terrified of a fandom. I've heard many things about the Sonic one, which is a fandom I always wanted to approach and test out, but I can't say anything from direct experience. I used to be in the MLP one (yes, I had my dark period, but my fanart has never been so productive) but despite being an incredibly creative fandom, it really became too much at some point/the show lost its spark, so I quitted it.

viera headcanons, please

Population of player characters does not reflect frequency of actual races ingame. So male viera are still very rarely seen by comparison due to their preference to keep to themselves, as given in Stormblood.

The male viera lore we have been given prior to Endwalker indicated they are super aggressive and territorial. As the city Viera met in the storyline don't show traits of this in Endwalker, my assumption for the time being is the aggression and territorial behavior is a result of one's connection to the woods they were originally to protect. In departing from the woods, the bond is severed, and the influence that the woods once exerted on the mind is no more.

City Viera might not be at risk of outside influences affecting their mental state like those that live in the woods and are bound to it, but we don't know if it's purely a benefit to break from the woods. As of time of writing, I assume that side by side, a Viera still bound to the woods would fare far better in a hunt than his city cousin due to that connection, and potentially heightened instincts from the forest's influence would allow to exceed the cousin where instincts and reactions are key to success.
