throwing all logical predictions for the finale out the window because this show has consistently chosen to do the most batshit insane things that I could never even dream of in a million years so here are my new theories for things that are gonna happen in episode 8:

-Ed and Stede open up an Inn together in that ramshackle house we saw in the NZ videos

-We won't get a Zheng/Olu/Archie/Jim polycule but we WILL get a Pete/Lucius/Izzy polycule but Izzy is only there to be a bitch and blue ball himself. and also whittle cool things

-Buttons and a massive legion of seagulls descend upon a navy ship and just pick it up and fly away

-Wee John gets hired at Spanish Jackie's to do a drag show every night and a drag brunch on the weekends

-Roach and Fang hookup

-Frenchie meets an honest-to-god mermaid, possibly after falling off the boat and being rescued by them

-Rick coins the term "Getting Rick Roll'd"

-A THIRD BADMINTON BROTHER APPEARS AND IT'S RORY KINNEARN ONCE AGAIN

-Anne Bonny and Mary Read show up on a dope ass ship to help kick the navy's ass and also hookup with Zheng. Calico Jack is also there with a comically dented abdomen from getting cannonballed in s1 ep8 but he makes plenty of jokes about being an inny now

-Doug, Mary, and the kids stay at Ed and Stede's Inn so Ed and Mary can bond over Stede's quirks and Stede can bisexualize Mary's boyfriend again. Also Alma just has a lot of knives

Jokes aside, I find myself more and more intrigued by what they're doing with Izzy this season.

The new eps have confirmed to me that Izzy is literally not that deep, and that's on purpose. Compared to the others, he is distinctly undercomplex, one-dimensional even; he doesn't have little fun or surprising things about him, he seems complex on the surface, but the more we get to know him, the more it's confirmed that he's just an asshole and nothing much more to it.

This is because he's there as a comment on toxic white masculinity. He's not the only character like this; but while others (Father Bonnet, Father Teach, the Badmintons) are there to condemn the abusiveness and violence of it, Izzy is there to ridicule it.

Which is an equally powerful thing to do.

That's why he's always the butt of the joke, why we are never invited to empathize with him. ofmd draws the line between drama and comedy at emotional pain. Physical pain is played for laughs, and Izzy's pain is only ever physical. The narrative doesn't take him serious at all, openly laughs at him and invites us to laugh at him, too. Is even cruel to him, at times, because he's not really supposed to be a person. He's a stereotype.

And I think we can see in the discourse how unusual and counterintuitive this is. We are not used to seeing a character that ticks all the boxes Izzy does in that role: comic relief and mascot. Not used to guys like Izzy being the ones who are dehumanized.

This is why it feels to me like he's getting rehabilitated instead of redeemed; he just doesn't have the depth for his actions to have enough moral weight to warrant redemption. You wouldn't expect a bitey terrier to apologize for taking a chunk out of your face, would you? That's where Izzy is at. The way he's treated right now to me feels benevolent, but condescending; he's gently fed treats to teach him that people can be friends, but behavioral euthanasia isn't off the table yet (and we won't be heartbrokem should it come to that).

They aren't trying to redeem him, they're trying to make him a real boy.

And yeah, that can be criticized, but embedded in the broader context of what ofmd has to say about authenticity and oppressive power structures, I find this approach fascinating. How do you rebuild a personality after a lifetime of compliance? And is it even possible to gain enough self awareness to realize that's what you need to do?

If what you want from an Izzy arc is a heartfelt apology, for him to see the error of his ways and make amends for his wrongdoing, I don't think we're going to get that. I think the narrative has very limited time and more important things to spend it on, but that doesn't have to be a bad thing. So far, they mostly seem to enjoy putting Izzy in a jar and shaking it, and I for one am here for it.

Prompt #11 - "You lost it. Well, we lost it."

Fanfiction: Good Omens

Other Notes: In which I didn't even sit down to write this until 10:30pm so it's one of the silliest pieces of fluff I've ever produced. South Downs. 542 words!

Aziraphale peered over the garden wall on tiptoe, brows furrowed in distress.

“You lost it!”

Below, his foot steadying the ladder upon which Aziraphale stood, Crowley raised his eyebrows. The angel backtracked.

“Well, we lost it.” They had been playing badminton in one of the clearer sections of the cottage garden, when Crowley had delivered a tremendous overhand swing and Aziraphale, in attempting to answer, had tipped the shuttle off the end of his racket, causing it to sail gaily over the wall. Normally this wouldn’t be a problem, but, “They’re out there again!” Aziraphale exclaimed, and clambered down the ladder. “I don’t think they saw it, but what do we do now?”

Their nearest neighbor was a respectable distance away, an elderly lady who tended to keep to herself, and with whom they had a cordial relationship. However at the moment she was in Wales visiting some relation or other, and in the meantime had let her cottage on AirBnB. Crowley claimed that he had had no influence on the app’s creation, and while Aziraphale wanted to blame demonic influence for its existence, he knew very well that humans were perfectly capable of this kind of evil on their own.

The tenants who now occupied the cottage were an American couple and their several children, all of whom were perfectly fine except that they were loud, extremely friendly, and liked to take up the entire field that stood between the old lady’s cottage and the one belonging to the “quirky gay couple,” with their vacationing antics. Aziraphale and Crowley (well, at least Aziraphale) had made an effort to be polite at first, but as the tenancy had dragged on, they began to simply avoid leaving their own garden when invaders were out. In the midst of wringing his hands, Aziraphale had an idea.

“Crowley,” the demon’s head snapped around at the saccharine tone in Aziraphale’s voice, his guard immediately up.

“Yyeeees?” he asked suspiciously, and Aziraphale reached out to grasp his arm, smiling beseechingly.

“Crowley, you know how we could get it back without being seen.”

“Angelll,” he said with a warning edge, but Aziraphale gripped his arm more firmly and sidled closer, grasping Crowley’s hand with his free one.

“Crowley—"

“No.”

“Crowley, please?” Aziraphale raised Crowley’s hand to his lips and kissed it, looking up over their knuckles with pleading eyes. Crowley sighed deeply, though the pink flush of his ears gave him away.

“Fine!” 

With a faint poof, he disappeared. Aziraphale grinned, wringing his hands in delight this time, and settled expectantly down onto a nearby bench. For a moment, there was nothing but the noise of the American children. Then, a feminine scream rent the air, followed by the sounds of screeching children, then masculine bellowing. Along with these sounds, there was the vibration of a much running about as the voices grew further away and (blessedly) quieter. A few moments later, a large black snake with a scarlet underbelly slithered around the corner and through the garden gate, the shuttlecock clamped comically in its jaws. Aziraphale beamed.

With another poof and a small pop, Crowley reappeared, and spat the shuttle into his palm, shaking his head in rueful amusement.

“The things I do for you, Angel.”

You know, for all this talk about ofmd being anti-colonialist, we don't actually get much on screen colonialism?

They're absolutely portrayed as racist and classcist, and there is a mention of massacring native peoples from the islanders, but the horrors of colonialism are never put front and center, nor should they be for a romantic comedy.

It's disingenuous to treat Izzy's deal as a deal with The Evil Colonialists. The Act of Grace showdown isn't centered around "colonialism". There are no native peoples being driven out of their homes. No one is being enslaved.

It's all about Badminton and his personal grudge against Stede specifically. Ironically, British law is what provides a way out for Stede and Ed: the Act of Grace.

And in the end, Badminton is rendered a comic, ridiculous figure, ranting about backwards land.

OFMD is not a story that is first and foremost about the real horrors perpetrated by the British empire. Nor is it about the real horrors of piracy, because pirates absolutely weren't just freedom-loving good guys. It's a romantic comedy about falling in love, communication, and kindness set in the age of piracy. While bigotry and colonialism are themes, they're secondary to the more personal story being told.

I am really intrigued by the big Plot Choice in OFMD S2!

Spoilers for OFMD S2 (and S1, I suppose) under the cut

--specifically, the way the show has set up Queen Zheng Yi Sao as the now- biggest *external* threat to the Revenge crew (the internal threats are arguably worse but Not The Point here!)

Because last season , the Major External Threat was The Fucking English Empire, with the Badminton brothers as their Dragon. Which meant simple villains who were easy to Boo-- BOOOOO the Empire! BOOOO the hypernormative bullies! This is a good easy Comic Bad Guy for our scrappy crew, overwhelming in power but morally in the clear wrong--they could just leave our crew alone (..to violently harass naval traffic, but like the victims in WWDITS, those aren't Real Characters here) , and they are even, both in the show and IRL, largely responsible for Stede and Blackbeard as pirates even existing. Plus it's easy to make them ridiculous losers. Excellent comic villains, no complaints intended by me, dunk on the British Empire forever.

But now, S2? The definite Big Threat going forward is going to be THE PIRATE QUEEN. Who is competent, and effective, and makes wonderful soup.

The Pirate Queen, who saved their lives and gave them every chance to fit in on her crew, mostly because she liked Olu. Because he was kind, and gentle, and she values that.

The Pirate Queen who's about a million times more disruptive to the social order, the overarching problem in the series, then Stede has ever dreamed of being. Who was, yes, a danger to the Revenge crew after the mutiny, but who was also willing to negotiate that, was doing so as they made their escape, and who had definitely earned the trust to make the conversation at least worth trying. Only they chose not to trust her, and made their escape, and considerably screwed her over in the bargain.

I don't for a moment think Zheng Yi Sao's going to lose all her trust in her crew and spiral like Blackbeard did; she's way too established and self assured for that. I don't even think she's going to make hunting the Revenge a big part of her usual working day (though pirate culture pretty much requires her to let it be known they're her enemies now). But they're definitely going to meet again, maybe several times, and this time it can't be as friends.

And , like with running out on Mary, that's totally on Stede. And I think that Stede is finally starting to really realize that his whole "dump people and run" maneuver is genuinely fucked up and hurts people-- he seems to feel really lousy about it even as he's doing it-- but he hasn't figured out a new maneuver yet (even though he's talked about other ways often enough! a very realistic hypocrisy..)

anyway something something about how last season was mostly about Stede finding the courage to Be Himself without apology, saying Goodbye to his old externally imposed roles (some goodbyes being more sword-based than others) , and it looks like this one is going to be about learning how to be True to Yourself while needing to Apologize Lots Actually; the way more complicated balancing act of needs and commitments with people who do have reasonable expectations him, instead of the easily-hateable and irrelevant Badmintons, who he could kill without guilt.

(I mean also it's gonna be very very funny. I hope Buttons changes shape several times and also bites more people. But there's gonna be a Plot and Themes and so on too, yk yk )
