Safe (Empires S2 Fic)

It's a peaceful night in Sanctuary. Cicadas buzz in the trees outside and the air hums with the soothing energy of the magic all around them. Sausage takes a deep breath as he exits the newly built blacksmith's building, where Eddie would move in in the morning.

It is so quiet, so calm, that the sound of an approaching visitor could be heard from miles away. Sausage turns to watch as the huge form of a familiar god swoops down right beside the town square, carrying a much tinier form in his arms.

"Hermes!" He exclaims happily, jogging over to greet the child as Joel carefully sets them on their feet. He holds his arms out for a hug, which Hermes gladly jumps into, giggling as their other father spins them around before finally setting them down. "Did you have fun in Stratos?"

"Yeah!" The child cries, grinning wildly. "Frogg is so cute, and just wait til you see the new bridge!"

Sausage chuckles, ruffling their hair before craning his neck to look at Joel, who has crouched down in an attempt to get on his level. "Been busy building, eh?"

Joel laughs. "You have been too, looks like." He gestures to the slew of brand new buildings in the town square, including Eddie's blacksmith building.

"Yep! Hard at work! Gotta make sure this place is perfect and safe." He smiles to himself. "It is getting late, though. I think it might be someone's bedtime." He nudges Hermes playfully as he speaks.

The child lets out a small whine before jutting out their lower lip and their big purple eyes somehow manage to get even bigger. "Can't I stay up just a little longer? I wanna play with Bubbles!"

"Oh, alright. I guess you can play for a little while." Hermes cheers before running off in the direction of the square, where Bubbles has been sitting patiently and waiting for her favorite playmate.

"I should probably head back to Stratos now." Joel says, standing back to his full height. "You two have fun."

"Of course we will. Bye!" Sausage waves as the god takes off into the sky, briefly blasting the entire square with wind before he disappears off into the horizon.

Sausage watches Hermes chase Bubbles around the fountain for a while before making his way to the small building he's set up for them to stay in. He pulls the covers back and places a stuffed animal the bannermaker made for them beside the pillow. Finally, he does one last check of the room to make sure it's ready for Hermes before heading back outside and calling for them.

Hermes runs over, breathless from playing with Bubbles. The tiny dog is happily plodding along behind them, tail wagging. "Already?" Hermes whines, about to bring out the puppy dog eyes again. Sausage turns away before he can see them, knowing he'll give in if he does.

"Yep, already! I've got a big day planned for tomorrow, so you'll need lots of rest."

"Okay..." Hermes sighs in defeat but thankfully they do as he says, stepping forward into the house. "Wait, is this mine?"

"Sure is! Finished decorating today. Do you like it?"

"I love it!" They move over to the bed and their eyes go wide at the sight of the stuffed animal. "It's Pablo!" They pick it up and cuddle it tightly to their chest.

"You can thank the bannermaker for that in the morning." Sausage tells them, and they nod with a smile. He helps them get changed into their nightclothes and tucks the blankets around them. But when he leans down to give them a kiss goodnight, they grab the sleeve of his coat.

"Hey, Papa?"

"Yes?"

"Can you tell me a bedtime story?"

Sausage slowly sits back down on the edge of the bed, humming thoughtfully to himself. "Not sure if I know any, Hermes."

"Tell me about you, then." They snuggle further into the blankets, but their sparkling purple eyes are focused entirely on him. He sighs.

"Alright, then. How about I tell you how the story of how I came here?" Hermes grins, nodding excitedly. Sausage scoots up until he is laying next to them on the bed, one arm wrapped around their tiny body as he begins his tale. "Many years ago, I lived in a different kingdom. It was a good kingdom for a long time. I had so much fun there. I had my mom, and Bubbles, and Eddie."

"Bubbles was there?"

"She was. She was my best friend--and she still is, of course." He taps Hermes on the nose, making them giggle. "Now, where was I...right, okay. I grew up in that kingdom. My mom was busy working in the castle a lot, so I spent most of my time learning how to forge tools and weapons in the blacksmith with Eddie. I was rather skilled at it, if I do say so myself." He winks at them, and they laugh again.

"When I was ten years old, my mom died working at the castle. But it was okay. Eddie and Bubbles took care of me, and I spent the rest of my childhood with them. When I was eighteen, however, the king began committing terrible crimes. He was jealous of his people because they had magic and he didn't. So he began abducting and draining the people of their magic." He skipped over most of the details--the torture, the murder, the way the king used to slaughter people in the streets like it was nothing. Sausage could still vividly remember the way it had felt to stand there, blood soaking into the soles of his shoes, watching as the castle workers loaded corpses into wagons to be burnt. Hermes didn't need to hear that.

"The king sounds like a terrible person." Hermes whispers, clinging tightly to their stuffed Pablo. Sausage mods, tucking a blond curl away from their eyes.

"He was." He agrees. He closes his eyes, remembering the blood, the fire, the screaming. There was always so much screaming. "Eventually, the king went after me. He knew I had been blessed with the ability to communicate with animals, and that I had a strong connection to the nature magic of old. He wanted that power for himself. So he sent his people after me. It was only because of Eddie and Bubbles that I was able to get away."

"They protected you!" Hermes smiles. "But they're okay!"

"They are!" He nods, squeezing Hermes in a brief hug. "They're perfectly safe here in Sanctuary now, and I couldn't be more glad. It took forever for me to find this place, but now that I have I think we can finally live in peace. We're safe here."

"But, Papa, what if the king finds out where you are? Won't he send more bad people after you?"

Sausage thinks back to a few days earlier, when he had been admiring the Great Bridge and thought he spotted movement near the spawn campfire. Figures clad in familiar armor, carrying weapons glittering with netherite and powerful enchants. The he shakes it off. He'd just been imagining it, he knows that. The king hasn't found him. He is safe here.

He leans down and places a kiss on Hermes's forehead. "It's okay. The king can't find me here. We're safe."

Hermes frowns, but eventually nods, accepting Sausage's words as the truth. They let out a big yawn, purple eyes beginning to drop heavily. Sausage smiles, smoothing their hair back and slowly getting up from the bed. "Goodnight, Hermes. Sweet dreams."

"Night, Papa..." They yawn again, turning over on their side. "Mhm...Papa?" They call softly just as he is about the leave. He stops, looking back at them. Their eyes are just barely open, amethyst colors still bright in the dark.

"Yes?"

"I love you."

Sausage smiles. "I love you, too."

"Night."

"Goodnight, Hermes." Hermes rolls over then and immediately begins to snore. Sausage shuts the door as softly as he possibly can before making his way back across the square to his own house.

When he at last lays down in bed, he can't help but let out a deep sigh. Telling Hermes his story has brought up memories, fragments of the past he really didn't want to dwell on. It was irrelevant now, anyway. What he'd told Hermes was the truth--the king couldn't possibly find him all the way out here. It was so far away, and even among the other rulers he was somewhat hidden. They are safe here. They have to be. As he cautiously drifts off to sleep, he keeps repeating that thought over and over in his head.

We are safe. We are safe. We are safe.

You know, I've been a judge and bannermaker for the Headline Awards for many years, and as I'm drifting into this new obsession (haha I say drifting... I'm pretty much in the middle of the ocean and slowly sinking, but sure) I keep thinking how fun it would be to have something like that for the Rhys Darby fandom??

It's basically an annual event where you can nominate fanworks that have to do with the person, in different categories like fic (divided into characters and genres), art and vids. Then there's a judging period where a bunch of volunteer judges go through the nominations and choose a winner for each category. The winners for the Headline Awards are traditionally announced on Anthony Head's birthday, so that's a possible reference point for a date. (I mean Rhys' birthday in this case, obviously.)

It's a celebration of the talent in the fandom. The winners get a snazzy award banner and a nice glowing comment by the judges.

I'm not going to ask "Whos in?!", because I'm not even sure I want to do it. Just throwing this out there.

Welcome Home & Safe Travels, 2020, fabric, ribbon, beads, embroidery floss, 36 in x 48 in, in collaboration with Asher McGrath Leahy, performed at O'Hare International Airport on 03/12/20, duration: 45 minutes

Welcome Home & Safe Travels was never supposed to be about a global pandemic. Fellow SAIC student Asher McGrath Leahy and I began this project in late February 2020 intending to perform an unexpected act of goodwill by publicly installing a banner embellished with pearls, embroidered dragonflies, and kind words in a floral print. At the time COVID-19 was nothing more to Americans than concerning speculation and an excuse for racist, xenophobic behavior. That was enough reason for us three weeks later on May 12th, to travel to an eerily quiet airport to display our banner accompanied by an atmosphere of unavoidable doom that we, the airport’s patrons, and staff all breathed from for the 45 minutes we remained there. The few remarks of appreciation and smiles we received were enough to know our goal was accomplished. A week later our college would be one of the last in Chicago to physically close and become an entirely virtual campus.
