you ever think about how beast in disney’s beauty and the beast doesn’t start fighting back against gaston until belle begs gaston not to hurt him?
in beast’s mind, belle isn’t coming back. he believes what gaston is telling him, because gaston is his parallel. gaston is who adam could’ve become. he is literally beast’s internal monologue toward himself.
he’s told himself for years that he’s unlovable. the prince at the beginning of the story would scoff at the notion of love. that the point of it is meaningless. and when the time finally comes to fight for love, he still is in the belief that love is impossible.
he learned how to love, he was selfless in letting belle go, knowing the rose would lose its last petal, and it still wasn’t enough.
gaston is a manifestation of adam’s past, coming back to finish him off as final punishment.
and adam, fueled by years of depression and suicidal ideation, is more than willing to let him.
in the If I Can’t Love Her (reprise) from the musical, beast sings about how there’s “no point anymore” and quite literally ends with
“So I finally know that I shall always be
in this hopeless state
and condemned to wait,
wait for death to set me free”
it isn’t until belle makes herself known that he finally begins to fight back. to fight again this depression, not only for the chance at love, for belle, but for once- Himself.
and even when beast has his damning inner monologue by the throat, he chooses to spare gaston
beast is shocked that belle came back at all, and after he’s (quite literally) stabbed in the back while distracted by her, he still repeats to himself “You came back” in disbelief
beast chooses in his dying moments to refute this, saying “maybe it’s better this way”, still expressing the belief that he is not deserving of love, especially her love
he tries to justify his death and comfort not only himself but belle as well, because since the curse began, he expected to die alone, and had since made peace with that.
he’s never had something to live for- until now.
