I hate it so much when people say Succession is “filmed like the office” (or worse that they “don’t know what steadicam is” or similar). Like yes obviously mockumentary style filming relies heavily on handheld cameras, including the use of zoom, but it’s frustrating because the reasons it works so well for documentary filmmaking is the same reason it works so well for Succession. Documentary filmmakers (whose filming style ‘mockumentaries’ are obviously based on) don’t have the luxury of pre-planning or rehearsing their shots, or doing multiple takes. They have to try and capture what’s happening the moment as best they can. And so consequently, they have to move around a lot, and they have to use rapid camera zoom to try and highlight spontaneous moments that are important but might otherwise be lost on the viewer.

And part of the reason this works so well for Succession is it makes the audience’s relationship to the characters feel genuine and organic, rather than pre-planned or rehearsed. It makes the moments that a camera captures a face or reaction feel more intimate and more genuine. And it highlights the moments characters might want to keep hidden from others in a particular way, in the same way a documentary camera might be able to capture a specific moment. And sometimes, like the office, this is also used for comedic effect. But the point is that the filming style is SO incredibly deliberate, and the idea that they’re just trying to rip off the office or straight up don’t know what they’re doing misses the point entirely.

Re: your tags on the buck and bobby performance review scene - I also loved how they were both honest and upfront with the treatment. And I have no expectations of us getting anything like this but after seeing that scene and knowing that Buck is going to still be struggling a bit with "death," coupled with the fact that we haven't really seen Buck on a call that was anything really more than medical upon returning to work...

But them going on their first call using the ladder again and Bobby (bc he just can't help but being a bit protective still!) sends someone else up it instead of Buck, even though Buck was gearing up to go (but secretly low key panicking over it).

And at first Buck feigns only frustration (bc no, Bobby can't keep cutting him slack or treating him differently), but when Buck confronts him later and they actually talk about it, Buck eventually confesses to actually being relieved that Bobby held him back bc /Buck/ was scared too and they both acknowledge that they just still need some more time to ~process things~ and work through both of their fears, but they'll both try to do it openly and honestly, for the other.

Ooooh I like this a lot :) because it would show:

1) how conscious Bobby is of Buck’s limits (he’s his captain — he’s been doing the job a hellova lot longer so he can see) and;

2) give buck the chance to accept his own limits too. And it’s not forever, it’s just taking things slow :’)

(I completely failed to find a gif but this made me think of 1.02 when bucks wary of doing the manoeuvre but Bobby convinces him to give it a go because he knows that’s what he needs)

We already saw Buck’s approach to recovery was very different to s3. And I can’t stop thinking about Buck’s expression when Dr Salazar tells him he can go back to work. That’s a look of dread right there…. So yeah Buck’s initial knee jerk reaction in this scenario would be “punishment/failure/self-depreciation” but then rather than turn into self destructive behaviour it would shift into understanding :)

Both these anons are asking the same things so I'm putting these asks t/g. If the writers wanted to add more typical teen drama elements to the show, yeah I guess Gina using Ricky to make EJ jealous is a possibility, but I'm leaning more towards no. If Gina were to use Ricky to make EJ jealous b/c she's jealous of his rela w/ Val, I don't think I would like what that would say about her character. How petty would she have to be to do that to him (if that’s the direction the show takes her)? We’ve seen Gina bear witness to EJ being jealous and insecure about Ricky in his relationship before. Observe:

It’s very brief but you can clearly tell Gina notices what’s going on in front of her. She knows as early as 1.02 that EJ felt suspicious and jealous of Nini’s relationship w/ Ricky. I’m not so sure the writers of the show plan to make EJ go thru this again. He’s worked so hard on himself and come too far to regress in this way now. Plus, if EJ’s able to joke about the chocolates situation with Gina in 2.11, and genuinely make her smile b/c of it, I don’t see the point in making him jealous thru Ricky again. I’d like to think Gina wouldn’t do that to EJ and hurt him in this way. Like I’ve said before, communication is not an issue for Portwell from what we’ve seen. If Gina feels any type of way by seeing how close EJ and Val are, I trust she will just talk to either him or their friends (esp Carlos or Ashlyn) about it.
