@cassie-thorne: Max's art is literally the best and I love her work so much! She puts out bangers after bangers and I absolutely loved watching her style evolve and grow this year and I'm looking forward to seeing it next year too! I especially absolutely love how Max tackles lighting and backgrounds in her work, like it's so unique and each piece tells its own story too. Some of my favourites from them: just follow my lead, this adorable pick-up line, literally everything they'd created for the expression-memes this year, long time no see partner and okay, technically this is cheating but this is a piece from 2022, but this portrait of artura is just i'mma cry okay?

@oh-so-youre-a-nerd: Thia's work is nothing short of frightening (affectionate) witchcraft and I mean this in the most sincere way possible lmaoo. I still have a lot of their stuff to explore, stalk and fan over, but their Raine artwork is just S-tier for me, like look at THESE THINGS: The villain arc, head empty still thinking about this, Trystan in a flowy lil dress and ofc their entire Raine x Aerin stuff because that's either the most depressing, poetic thing ever or a massive serotonin boost. @erixafleur: I came across Erica's work after lurking in the Blades side of the fandom and I loved their MC Raya's redesign so much! Plus I loved the art style too because it gives me Disney animation vibes. I hope to explore your work even more next year! how do you use references when you draw fanart or figure out how to draw irl characters?? it's just that i've been looking through your art and i feel like you ability to capture a character's idk essence, in vibes + appearence, are just unmatched! they're all so dynamic and like them i just <33

aaa thanks so much!! im glad to hear that since i honestly dont watch a ton of live action? i generally have done a lot more fanart for animated things so thats nice to hear haha anyways though!! i have far too many words that may or may not make sense to say so i'll put how i use references and figure out live action characters below

the main rule i like to keep in my head is that i am drawing the character, not the actor, if that makes sense?

this is all taking arthur as an example, to show what kinds of things i look for!! if i were talking about merlin any other live action character like. bobby briggs or something all the details would be super different haha a way i like to familiarize myself with a live action character at first is tracing which i must preface by saying TRACING ISNT BAD!! its a tool and it just needs to be used correctly. tracing is a great way to figure out a method to drawing things, so its really valuable in studying. im not gonna address using tracing in finished artwork rn bc thats where it gets a little dicey and i would talk about it too much.

i dont really need to do this for arthur anymore but it was a fun exercise lmao

sorry the images are so crunchy i always forget i work on small canvases, anyways in capturing a likeness i like to emphasize and exaggerate a little which features make the character most recognizable to me.

he's got a sharp nose which is bumped at the bridge and a little bit upturned at the bottom. when he's smiling his eyes crinkle a lot and his cheek muscle becomes more pronounced and connects into the corner of his mouth

very square jaw. his brows are thicker near the center and don't have much of an arch. his cheeks are hollowed with neutral expression and the muscles on the sides of his mouth (depressor anguli oris, if i remember correctly lol) are obvious when the corners of his mouth are downturned

the corners of his mouth fold in a lot when he bares his teeth if hes angry or agitated, its a different type of fold when hes relaxed or smiling

his masseter is rather pronounced when he's talking or agitated, and i usually connect the line of it to the line that goes down from the inner corner of his eye. i forget what the word for it is rn but its different from eyebags (though i do like to draw eyebags)

but none of these details work if whatever hes doing in the drawing isnt in character, yknow? like he could look like arthur but he wouldnt really feel like arthur if hes not acting like arthur. idk it s hard for me to put to words im sure u get what i mean enough

body shape and language are also super important to think about, these are some things i keep in mind with arthur - hes shredded but not like marvel movie dehydrated shredded (good for him) - hes very broad and his shoulders slope down because of his trapezius muscles - he takes up a lot of space! he hardly ever curls up or sits with his feet up in his chair. even when hes sleeping hes pretty sprawled out - his "closed off" body language is crossing his arms or raising his left hand to twist his index finger ring with his thumb (worried/thinking gesture) - he moves with a lot of purpose usually and isnt often clumsy (unlike merlin lmao) - he moves his shoulders a lot when he walks (see top left image)

honestly think body language is just as important as facial features if not more, for the purpose of creating personality and character

i probably sound like i think way too much about this stuff which i. i kind of do but not in so many words i dont need this many words when its all in my brain. but yeah thats how i figure out how to draw a live action character i guess? anyways this was kind of a mess haha

I HAVE PLAYLISTS FOR ALL THE CHARACTERS!! Ive been thinking about how to share them for awhile bc I LOVE these playlists and they help my brain rot on this AU but mm! Just wanted to get that out there im holding onto these

Something people didn’t catch was that in this animation, which is supposed to take place around the time Eddie moved into the neighborhood, he had his mail hat! But, currently, he doesn’t! That’s not because he lost it, Howdy actually stole it! Howdy immediately attempted to scam Eddie when he first arrived, stealing his hat and trying to sell it back to him, but he did not know that Eddie would not give a fuck. Howdy thought Eddie cared way more about his job then he actually does. So, Eddie’s hat is still currently decaying under Howdy’s desk.

All the characters have trauma or something depressing about them… except Julie! I’m not sure why but I just.. never came up with something reasonable for her backstory. I came up with a lot of ideas, but a lot of them seemed to cliche and controversial? Like, one of my ideas was some sort of sex working trauma, but I thought oooh of course you gave the most feminine character the sex working backstory! Another idea was eating disorder trauma, but again, ooh i gave the fem one the ED! The same thing happened with SA trauma, it all just felt so… cliche. And I felt like I would get a lot of backlash if I tried to implement this. So.. im still working on it!

^ originally Franks backstory was going to be completely SA related, but I changed that. Still not spoiling how, though.

^^ also I really liked the sex working idea! Because I think it would be interesting if thats how Eddie and her met. Not that Eddie bought sex from her, but that they like worked together and slowly became friends! Eddie kept her safe n stuff, beat the shit out of ppl that didnt pay yknow? Explored a deeper level of understanding between them

Ive been daydreaming about attempting to make my own little bootleg “play fellow exhibition” not nearly to the extent that Clown did, but just some sort of fake “restored” things! Maybe even fake interviews with those that remember the show! Ive even recorded some lines, of my own voice, of fake voice clips restored from the show. I haven’t had the confidence to post any of them just yet aa. I think my Eddie impression is IMPECCABLE though. Maybe bc I have a southern accent

^ also if this isnt obvious this AU is still a show being restored by a team, the show is just the adult parody ive created here. Ill be sure to specify if i ever post something restoration-lore-related!

The number of fingers they have is inconsistent, and that is not lore related! I am just an idiot! You might notice that sometimes they have 5, sometimes they have 4. I.. have no actual reason for this. I literally just.. forget! Im literally currently drawing a piece with Julie and Sally where they both have 5 fingers. Why?? Bc the reference I used was of two human girls so!! Just wanted to put it out there, that is not on purpose

I hide a lot of secrets in my art. Bc its fun. If you ever see something in my art thats a little too dark, feel free to up the brightness and see what you find. Does something sort of look like Morse code? Feel free to try it out! I’ll give you a hint, I have used both of these techniques to hide secrets in my art already. The Morse code one is really hard to find, though, so props to you if you find it!

I like to think that the AU’s show is like Rick and Morty. It started out this comedic, very clearly adult-humored show, but slowly the characters had lore! People started watching not for the humor but for the interesting characters. Like when Rick was revealed to have a depressing story with his wife and all that, it was the same as when ppl first found out about Frank’s strange amnesia and PTSD. Like “?? Who put lore in my funny adult comedy??” Yknow what i mean

^ i like to think there was some mind-bending moment where it was revealed Frank doesnt remember anything about his childhood and everyone watching was like :O

Originally in the show, (like season one), the characters were the way they are to make fun of those things. Confusing, but what i mean is that Poppy was a trans woman to make fun of trans people, Eddie and Frank were to make jokes about gay ppl, etc. but SIKE once the show got more seasons and got lift off they became actual characters instead of just jokes! The creators just wanted to make ppl love the show before they made the gay characters actually have personalities, so they couldn’t get cancelled prematurely! HA SUCKERS!!

hi I just found this au today and it is choking me alive

I do have a google sheet with a buncha characters written down but it has some spoilers in it so... 👀

But I can absolutely give a rundown!! Magyctale doesn't exactly have a solid "gimmick" (like Underswap or Underfell) but it's more like a rewrite of sorts? The characters act somewhat differentlyto their original counterparts and the main meat of the story is how their journey affects them and their relationships. :3

So for instance: Season 1 is for the most part a reimagining of Undertale, with a few original characters sprinkled alongside the AU cast. One of the biggest changes is that Frisk is older (they're about 17) so they have a lot more to say and there's a lot more room for them to express themself. Also I just prefer writing characters who aren't small childen XDD

After Season 1 is when it starts going into more stuff from my own noggin as opposed to being a retelling. So S1 is kinda like introducing all the characters and their dynamics before adding more stuff :3

By far my favorite arc is the one that incorperates elements from Deltarune- that's where my favorite boys come in and also is the arc with the most OCs!! Especially Mave- that's my horrible horrible son whom I adore with my entire heart and soul <3<3<3

Alaska:

-he has a monotone voice, and his facial expressions are very limited — sometimes his voice would magically switch in tones but he overall doesn’t try to control it cause he doesn’t care

-he has very calloused hands, mostly because he’s more of a hands-on person and that being put in the wilderness a lot caused that, I guess in a way the callousness of his hands are like permafrost? I dunno

-when he decides to actually hibernate for the winter no states wanna bother him— even Florida (like how Florida was concerned when Gov asked him to call Alaska because Alaska likes to be alone)

-like Alaska said himself, he doesn’t actually hate Texas, so I doubt he actually hates any of the states

-Alaska’s actually rather a mother bear towards the other states occasionally, despite his constant stoic personality

-yeah no he gotta be autistic. -he’s built like MOOSE respectively. And a bear, and imo he has the fierceness of a wolverine if he wants to

-out of all the states, I like to imagine he has the most notable or prominent canine teeth, mostly because in the wilderness of Alaska, most of the food you’d find there are meat, fish, and berries. -I’m sure he has back problems. If only he had a cowboy that could offer him a massage or something

-I gave him a slit eyebrow and a scar just above it because I saw someone hc him with it somewhere else but I can’t remember where, but I decided why not yknow

-I call his hair The Bush, which essentially is what we call the non urban or suburban areas, or the extra rural rural Alaska, which is like 2/3 of Alaska, that’s why it’s so wild and unkept

-Alaska is known for being a usually prepared person, mostly a habit he’s picked up from living in the wild

-listen…. I don’t think Russian is his second language. He has 20 official languages (excluding English) and they’re his native languages. He’d speak the native languages before Russian any day. Him as an individual does know Russian due to his history, but as a state he speaks indigenous languages rather than Russian. -again, he’d speak his indigenous people’s languages the most after English

-no, he’s not russian

-yes, i base him more off of his native culture

-he has black hair and dark eyes

-he hates bright lights with a passion, but natural lights are an exception (I like to think this is why his garage is dimly lit)

-some of the states call his garage his ‘den’ cause he’s like a bear in a cave

-he has some of the best eyesight mostly due to being THE hunting state and living in the middle of nowhere sometimes just because he can

-when he’s in a story telling mood, he can go on for hours, but this doesn’t happen often because all the other states tend to be busy or he’s not comfortable talking to them, also he’s been shot down from his rambling before and it hit him hard, his poor soul

-many states like to go to his garage when things get overwhelming or too hot out, I like to imagine that’s why in the scene where Texas entered his room, the door was already unlocked

-Alaska actually does have fire seasons, it’s just that he doesn’t talk about them cause he feels they’re not as important as anyone else’s issues, it’s a problem he’s developed over time

Texas:

-i don’t have as much hcs for him but

-his hair is probably brown, darkish I think

-his boots have spurs and he does bounce his leg without thinking

-probably has keen eyes, I wouldn’t know, but they’d probably not be as good as Alaska’s hunter eyesight (Alaska will make fun of him for that)

-loves cowboy stuff a hell of a lot

-he actually rather likes the bickering he and Alaska do, it’s a nice distraction and a good excuse to talk about his state and learn about the other’s

-he knows how to braid hair n other stuff. Because I said so

-he sometimes actually goes to California for advice, he hates to admit it if he ever will

-he probably has names for his guns, if we’re gonna be honest, but he tries not to talk about it in front of other states

-he has to admit to himself, Alaska is rather a good anchor for him to keep him grounded and not off his heels about himself

-Texas is easier to fluster than it is to shake the pollen off a flower

-he has dry as all hell hands. Get his ass some lotion or something

Both Texas and Alaska:

-as far as I’ve seen, in wttt Alaska and Texas are the only ones that I know have cleaned their things during meetings and such (Texas with his gun and Alaska with his ulu knife)

-so I want to imagine they’d both busy themselves with cleaning their stuff while having conversations with each other

-Texas often calls Alaska ‘Big Guy’ and Alaska often refers to him as ‘Cowboy’

-Texas actually went to Alaska for help when he froze over since Alaska is experienced with the cold — but Alaska decided to spare him and not talk about it during the Alaskan Recap and said he simply went ‘camping’ instead

-they often bicker that it’s basically a way to communicate together now

-Texas actually does listen to Alaska’s stories when he has the time, and Alaska in return would listen to him rant about whatever’s troubling him (even if it’s stupid)

-if you ask Alaska, he’d probably just straight up answer whatever you asked, but Texas depending on the question, wouldn’t directly answer especially if it’s about him and it isn’t about how holy he is

-yeah no the two have definitely camped together before

-Texas sometimes teaches Alaska about different southern terms and sayings

-also they have NO ass, they’re flat as all hell, Alaska probably has a little more ass, but it’s mostly to make sure Texas doesn’t get too ahead of himself yaknow

-Texas taught Alaska how to square dance actually, I would know cause I was there

As a fellow artist may I just say that external motivation is a super normal thing to be motivated by! Having others cheer you on can be super helpful!!! Yeah making art because you enjoy making art is yknow what we all strive for but nothing wrong with needing some encouragement!

That being said I ADORE YOUR ART AND ANIMATIONS. Your style is SO pleasing- idk how to explain it but something about the way you do expressions and shading, esp on Elecman, just makes it so so pleasing on the eyes!

what if... you told me all about your fansession (i would love to learn more about it)

no way the real moss guy in my inbox... heehe... im actually really excited to ramble about this!!! =D back when i first read hs i made many fan characters but i got an idea to make a fansession where, instead of the 12 zodiac signs it was the 22 major tarot cards..... and it kinda went from there!

because obviously 22 character session would be insane i at some point formed out 6 kids who were having The Session, and the rest of the characters were "npcs" made by sburb. but yknow, more humanlike than the carapacians, so kinda akin to the trolls. oh yea i changed some of the sburb worldbuilding for this, so i suppose its an alternate version of the game.... ;p also the session would take place around 2019.

okeeey anyways heres the players!

ester olsen (the star) is a knight of hope from sweden who's foolish and hyperactive but also very hopeful and loyal like a dog, she's internally a deviantart kid who draws exclusively on ms paint and sburb's quest for her is to become a typical hero. her land is a field with a country town inhabited by animal people.

her older brother emil (the chariot) is a rogue of breath who moves trough life very fast and always thrives to make progress by any means, and also takes care of ester... because hes awesome... his land is a giant sea of energy kind of similar to terezi's.

elio cassini (the sun) is the heir of light, he's just a really lucky boy who likes jrpgs and magic spells. he's anxious and keeps to the rules but well meaning; best friend of ester. he learns to accept the dark sides of the world instead of escaping from them. his land is an orange desert full of broken glass, ancient bones and mysteries.

elio's sister is nastia the maid of space (the empress)! she's kind of a snarky girl next door who likes art, gardening, fashion and baking but she struggles with persistence. her land is a field of giant flowers.. and frogs of course ;p

selene's the mage of void (the moon). (no surname i thought of for these two..... whoops....) she's the oldest one and also very lonely, although she isn't expressive she tends to cling to other people. she used to like weird and fascinating things, her land is a broken apart mountainous area flooded by dark water!

then selene's younger brother rasmus the prince of time (the emperor)! hes your average delinquent scriptie kid who tends to get into fights (usually with ester), but he's never completely malicious. his land is a fiery lava pool that's hard to navigate.

the goal is still to make the next universe via a frog, but theres no derse and prospit and instead dreaming just teleports your ghost self to a random location. there's still a fight between dark and light though, but this time it's the magician card (light) and the high priestess card (dark) who have their forces battling it out, which is pretty much everyone else, on a skaia stand in which is no longer a chessboard and now just a black and white planet. they're also the final bosses in place of king and queen, and they get stronger the session goes on so the party needs to act fast!!!

idk how to summarise the whole duration of the session to be honest because too much stuff gets involved.. but basically they do make it out in the end! (with some major character deaths though... hehh..)

What?! Does she think 88? She just magically gets up and walks out of your body once you’re no longer a kid? Whenever I walk around in circles people often tell me to stop because it makes them anxious and then my anxiety and constant paranoia builds up, and I start shaking like a Chihuahua. Anyway, origami is a very good coping skill. What about drawing as well? It keeps your hands busy and art is expressive. You don’t have to trace anime characters, you can just draw what you’re feeling. Also, I sometimes trash my room, but not so that it’s very bad and hard to clean up or it makes a lot of noise. I just threw around soft things that don’t make a noise once they hit the wall.

23: What's something you hope people notice when looking at your art?

OH OH OH THAT WOULD BE THE!!!! recurring details and tiny references. yknow the stuff that's there just to allude to something that's happened before, something we both understand. AND SYMBOLISM/IMAGERY oh i love that. some of it doesn't have a very clear meaning because It Exists In My Head Only but it is hopefully visible in its reappearance. i have got to start putting more religious imagery in my art oooh that would kill me wonderfully. ALSO the distinctions between similar people and past/future selves!!

17: What do you love getting compliments about?

subject matter, i think? composition!! framing. ooh or expressions because i've been trying to get better at that. THE SYMBOLISM THINGY AGAIN. idk i just like whdn people notice that,,, Oh You Did This On Purpose Huh

8: What's the most fun and least fun parts of your process?

MOST FUN is the coloring i love collrs my best friend colors <33 AND LIGHTING. and any time i get to use color burn or color dodge layers i love them i love them i love them. LEAST FUN is panelling. goddammit. pacing is so hard i still can't get the timing of things quite right. but i guess that also makes panelling simultaneously the most fun??? because i love a challenge. it's just a Thing about me that i get terribly bored so so easily even while doing things and the only way to counter it is for the thing i'm doing to be actually??? difficult to do???? so that's why a lot of the stuff i draw is pretty ambitious and out of my skill level because if it's not nearly impossible to create what is the POINT. the other most fun thing is when i get to break the rules it makes me so so happy to defy genre and tap into surrealism/absurdism oh i have got to do that more often

Fandom: Genshin Impact

Characters: Albedo, Kazuha, Venti

Albedo

When he sees you studying religiously in the workshop, he goes to the nearby campfire. Finding a pot and some water, he warms it up to make hot cocoa. Heading back to you, he hands it to you, watching your face light up in pleasant surprise. 

As the workshop in the mountains can still get cold, he fetches a wool blanket to wrap around your arms. It allows you to have a better time with your research. 

He tries to take your mind off of work by asking you to be his model for his next art piece. You are told to lay down, because he wants to draw you that way. Despite shooting him a confused look, you follow through with it anyway, getting into a position that’s too relaxing. Soon enough, you fall asleep and he quickly tends to you and tuck you in. 

Other times, he wants you away from the workaholic atmosphere. Holding your hand tightly, he leads you out of the cave-like study and into the pretty snow. A light flutter falls from the skies, tickling your cheeks in gentle waves. The two of you stroll through the slippery slopes, and he makes sure no harm comes to you.

He talks philosophically and about the world, giving you a break from the load of paperwork. 

However, he is quite the workaholic himself, his thoughts always straying to him own studies. This usually strikes some sense in you, where you help pull him out of his stupor, as well as your own. The two of you continues to remind each other that breaks are needed. He’s your rock to hold onto; and you were his. 

“[Y/N]? You appear very tired. Slow down and let me fix you some tea.”

Kazuha

Whispers poetry into your ear. His voice itself is soothing to you, calming your frantic nerves from the ongoing training that was set in stone. Every word that comes out is like silk, which relaxes your tense muscles. 

Pulling you away from the training grounds, he shows the nature views he has grown so fond of. Maple leaves rain down in gentle motion, the scenery warming you up inside with comfort. It is beautiful and you do not regret sneaking out with Kazuha for this moment. 

He talks about his homeland, Inazuma, full of raw emotion and beautiful phrases that take your breath away. He tells you not to rush what fate has in store for you, to take it easy and go at your own pace. This relieves your stress easily. 

You are sometimes taken out to the ship, where you are not allowed to train. The sea laps beneath the engine, blue waves furling in a way that soothed you. It is beautiful, the horizons stretching far and wide, with the rising morning sun in the distance. 

Seeing your tired expression, he takes you to the middle of nowhere -- the meadows where it is warm and the sun basks. He says the wind leads him here. And before you know it, the two of you are knocked out on a rock, taking a nap together to find your energy again for the next coming day. 

At times, he goes easy on you during battles, soon turning it into a fun word game where he contemplates haiku. 

“The wind is calm today. Come. We don’t need you rushing either.”

Venti

Always very willing to distract you from your paperwork. Barging right into your office at the Favonius Headquarters, he walks to you with a giddy smirk. 

He takes no objections, deaf to your protests as he forces you out of there, running through the fields with you fumbling behind him. He goes to Windrise, expertly climbing up his favorite tree. You sit beside him, letting out a sigh at the male. You are secretly happy to be here instead.

Plays his precious lyre to you, the melodic song ringing into your ears. They make you feel warm inside... and sleepy. His voice is angelic as always, with favorite lyrics tumbling out of his precious lips. 

Of course, he brings you to his favorite tavern in Mondstadt, Angel’s Share. Buying a bunch of drinks, the two of you drink and feel the rush of it kicking in. He is smiling in content when you sag your shoulders into a relaxed state, no more worrying about the irrelevant stuff from before.

Tells you lots of jokes. You try not to laugh at them, but he eventually gets to you anyway. His teal eyes watch you softly, content to destress you from the workload you keep putting on yourself. He misses when you had more freetime -- when you aren’t fretting about the littlest things. 

He gives you a lot of surprise hugs. His arms are surprisingly strong, tightening around you and stubborn to let you go. You feel yourself giving in to the sturdiness of his arms. 

“Free yourself from the chains of responsibility, [Y/N]. Eheheh. Pretty please?”

once again going to try not to sound weirdly obsessive abt this stuff because it sounds more insane when i put all the details into words when they just like. exist as nebulous thoughts in my brain. idk anyways

more tracing because tracing is good for figuring things out.. also fun. when you trace things a bunch for practice you pick up on the repetition like. how someone's face looks with different movement and the overlap between them. like how similar a happy expression can be to an aggressive expression and how similar an aggressive expression can be to a terrified one. if that makes sense

it is interesting too with merlin because he varies a lot over the seasons? not just with being yknow. older. like hes thinner in s2-4 than s1+5, and we all know how much his haircut varies. i dunno i just think facially he varies a lot more than arthur

sorry again for crunchy images heres a few specifics i tend to notice

when hes fighting or putting in a lot of physical strength/effort his mouth pulls up high and his nose scrunches which causes a crease from the corners of his nose. same crease as you would see when he smiles, but since the nose is scrunched the part of the crease next to the nose is more prominent. usually when i see people scrunch their nose like that it wrinkles on top of the bridge but his seems to wrinkle more at the sides. also eyebrow furrow very important

hes got a very strong chin its rather large and squared off. his eyes and the folds beneath his eyes crinkle a lot when he smiles. the smile lines appear with a point to them. also hes got a very prominent adams apple

low eyebrows, widest at their arch which is more lateral. ill talk more abt his teeth in a minute but hes got the american girl doll teeth when his lips are parted lmao

his eyes are pretty deep set, so when you see him in profile theres a good bit of distance between the bridge of his nose and his eye. when his hair is longer the hair around his ears tends to curl towards his face. same w the hair on his neck. his nose has a pretty subtle bump to the bridge and then the tip turns up a bit, but overall Not an upturned nose

his ears stick out we know this..... you can see the contrast of the hollow of his cheeks vs his mouth muscle sometimes (usually more in s2+3). his nose is in a pretty neutral position here

as opposed to this one where his nose broadens a little with his smile. smile lines again pretty triangular.

faces are soft and when one feature moves usually the others slightly move/change with it. some other things are teeth which i meant to talk abt in the arthur post too, but yeah. merlin's got pretty prominent front teeth, and arthur's got his one crooked canine. hair also is (at least to me) pretty important... his hair is always cropped above the eyebrows and imo he's less recognizable as merlin if its not. its not especially fluffy or curly either. not to say he cant be drawn with different haircuts haha, sometimes it just makes him a little harder to recognize

again body shape + language is just as important is not more so, bc we're drawing a character not an actor!! theres a few things i think about w merlin

- hes pretty thin with the exception of s5, but always pretty lanky lookin - just generally pretty angular? idk - he is somewhat broad but the slouching and not being shredded (usually) tend to negate that a little - he crouches a lot or pulls his legs up when he sits (hes so real for that) - when hes not using his hands they tend to just be at his sides, when he's standing he'll put them behind his back sometimes, when talking he'll gesture with them usually around his head or hip/waist level - he slouches more than arthur, his shoulders are usually somewhat forward - when he's confused or teasing often he'll push his head forward - tilts his head a lot when hes teasing or happy or confused - draws his shoulders up to his ears when he's uncomfortable, confused, or frightened - whereas arthur moves very purposefully, merlin moves in a way that just looks like he has a lot less spatial awareness idk a better way to describe it lmao. like u know hes clumsy even when he's not actively being clumsy

honestly i dont tend to put too much detail in faces because i dont draw in a very realistic style so i tend to lean more into shapes and body language to make characters recognizable, but knowing how the face works still plays into it a lot?

anyways i hope this makes at least a little sense lmao

IM,,, GON TRY TO EXPLAIN MY ART THOUGHTS,,,

For the expressive part, it’s either about paying close attention to cartoons with good expressions OR checkin your own face out in the mirror!! For more realistic elements in my drawn expressions (even if they are supposed to be cartoon-y/anime-y, addin in some realism logic will enhance ‘em) I have either taken inspo from my own mug, my partner’s or my sister’s since we are all very facially animated. Checkin how your own face moves with Certain feeling is a varified way to get a nice expression on the paper. The movement of the facial muscles is very important to get somewhat a hang of, after all BUT!!! Important part to expressions is that you don’t focus Only on the face, the whole body moves along with a person. Hunched shoulders or a bit lowered head can do a lot for communication of an expression Especially in cartoons, there’s a rule that you should push an expression to it’s fullest potential. I also think about some ideas from stuff like traditional chinese threatre. They put on make up and elaborate costumes to enhance their features, so their expressions and character can pop out better

For the flowy part,,, bbrppbrrpbbb I have no idea how and when I started to do stuff more fluid

My art used to be quite stiff and for the longest time I defualted to thin and sharp lines

This was mostly because going Sharp and eliminating more rounder parts made sense in my head and helped me somewhat learn anatomy better. At least, in some cases it gave me a lesson about the torso to arms proportions n also kinda the legs. It’s why I recommend just kinda entering a stage where you just try and make sense of things, whether it be geometry, perfect straight lines or the more spherical ball things Ever. Going with the “basic shapes” like a circle for the head, triangle for the torso n so on might not be smth that will click in your brain

I was KINDA obsessed with learning anatomy as soon as possible even tho you don’t really have to go after that. One time I saw a pyramid of needs but like for artistic learnin and anatomy/realism were somewhere far on the top. Just go after what sparks the most joy, basically, but I didn’t know that back then so after every shower I would check out how my own body looks like from different angles. Yknow, thumbing where the rib cage ends, how does a shoulder connect to the torso, what the fuck is an armpit and how in the complete shittery does the neck connect to the head from the front

Cut like two years later, I think I’m enterin the Flowy arc

For the flowy, you KINDA disregard everything u’ve learned about anatomy Except the general idea of the proportions. I like to think about my drawings as part of an animation. From the picture that I’m making, there has to follow another and before it were also a few hypothetical drawings and together they gotta make up a movement. If I can’t see my drawing moving in my head, I’m not gon be too happy bout it

The main thing you want is a line of action:

Finding a brush that feels good and lets you develop a sketch style that makes u happy and lets you figure out where what goes cleanly also helps out. For me it was Luv and the the more faint sketch lines that u see up there ☝ give me enough space to be KIIIIIINDA messy about it but not overbearingly so to the point that I don’t know what’s goin on anymore

Practice, practice, take inspiration, study other people’s styles, disrespect anatomy, practice some more, don’t put too much expectations on yourself, don’t take every art “advice” too much to heart, let go of perfectionism, practice and you’ll get it!

so thinking bout it. i definitely know why people tend to use reds & blacks in drawing wilbur. and that’s the whole ‘vilbur’ thing as well as the ycgma color palette.

which, vilbur is a problem in of itself. but the ycgma palette isnt nescessarily bad in design, especially since thats canonically associated with him.

the problem in character designs with wilbur isn’t the traits. its not colors. its not even specific traits or features. 

hell, i draw my wilbur with imp horns & a tail. so im definitely not gonna talk about features like the zombie features ‘dehumanizing’ wilbur. cause features alone aren’t what does that. 

its the intent of portrayal. 

wilbur’s colors have always been warm earthy colors of browns and yellows, and its something his designs have lacked for a very long time. since pogtopia and his decline in mental health, he was drawn with these colors less and less. 

i think that there could definitely be something there about then villainizing his state of mental health, something the fandom still struggles with today, but its not the colors alone that do this. 

ive drawn very peaceful and happy images of wilbur with high contrast, with reds, with the zombie like and imp like features. i’ve seen plenty of others do it. 

like i said before, its not a problem. 

the problem where design choices come into play is intent. when you draw wilbur with these colors and features, are you doing it for fun, because its cool, because of a headcanon, OR are you doing it to bring out ‘vilbur’. The portrayal of his mental health in a villainized way. Are you giving him reds and crazed faces and posture and having him do out of character things in tandem with these design choices? Cause then it’s a problem I think. It’s the intent and use of the features. 

Someone drawing him with inhuman features isnt inherently demonizing or dehumanizing him. People draw characters like Tommy and Tubbo and various others in the same way all the time! Messing with inhuman traits and headcanons is fun. Hell, the only reason I’ve started drawing him and Ghostbur again with some of these features is because it’s fun. Plus I think portraying them in a positive light with these features helps show that narritive that they aren’t bad people. That vilbur isn’t a thing. 

Drawing Wilbur with these things are fine. The YCGMA palette is beautiful and works so well. Reds in WIlbur’s color palette is great because of it’s large inclusion in the L’manburg flag, as well as his red beanie, or making him primary colored like Tommy. The rose colored glasses are also a huge headcanon which is such a good one in my opinion. 

But it’s these features along with how you draw his expressions, what you have him doing, etc, that leads into the whole ‘vilbur’ thing and certainly hasn’t helped his reputation as a character. 

I think its fine to draw characters with as many headcanons and stuff as you want. I also think trying to tell people what features to draw and not draw characters with just kinda sucks, because that doesnt happen to any other character.

I mean people have made the argument that drawing Tommy in flowers and blue ‘woobifies’ him, which isn’t true and has been argued so much that it isn’t true. So I think this is no different. Drawing Wilbur with reds and giving him inhuman characteristics isn’t bad, just be careful on why you’re doing it, yknow? 

Are you doing it just to make him look scary or evil or bad, or are you doing it because its fun or looks cool? Because the latter is a-okay!

Just have fun with designs and be careful of your intent. Wilbur’s character is very widely mischaracterized in this fandom, and it’s in part that such a large percentage of people have joined post his death. And due to his actions in Pogtopia, he’s been villainized to a very exaggerated degree and also villainizes his mental health during that time. Because of this portrayal, its become so so common in art, that people genuinely don’t have any idea that he was or is a good person, which again, just leads to further mischaracterization of him. 

So just, be careful, but have fun and draw what you have fun doing!
