funfact the betta fish in the intro of jjk that represents geto is not healthy!!!its incredibly hurt as you can see since its tail being ripped. that can happen from sickness or fight with another fish but in this case it seems more like sickness
also betta fish are incredibly aggressive and territorial and cannot be in the same tank as other fishes or even the same species fish since they will kill each other
so thats another way they choose to symbolise their rivalry and relationship
have fun with that info!!

The way Suguru is always looking at Satoru in almost every official art and scene in the anime and manga, but he's the one to look away from the white Betta fish while Gojo can't tear his eyes off of him is fucking crazy

Honestly Geto and Gojo having the same death anniversary which happens to be the most romantic day in Japan, with a character in-story stating how romantic it is should be enough evidence to convince anybody that SatoSugu are supposed to be a romance.
On top of that, we hear that JJK0 is about Yuuta and Rika's love but it's also about Geto and Gojo's relationship.
Then Gege Akutami specifically assigning break-up songs to Geto and Gojo.
AND THEN; they each get canon songs made in each other's POV speaking about their feelings specifically for one another. Where Gojo's song contains lyrics like "Even though I’ve come to know the scent of you being different from mine" and "Any prayer, any word Could bring us closer, but they couldn’t reach you Just like a silent love, In the summery colors along my cheeks". And Geto's song has lyrics like "Even trivial conversations are fine. Show me your blushing face once more" and "It exists only here. I want to touch you" and "Though I understand a wounded heart. Why do I end up hurting and leaving the same scars?"
The animation team going out of their way to give these two more soft moments hanging, creating visual parallels through the Betta Fishes, the flowers, the entire OP for Hideen Inventory but especially the part where we are seeing Gojo's vision being filled with Geto looking amazing while he rides Geto's rainbow dragon.
I saw someone say we're just projecting western views of romance onto satosugu but like, LOOK AT ALL THIS. I cannot stress enough the insanity of their death dates. It's like two people dying one after the other on Valentine's Day. This is some Romeo & Juliet bullshit. JJK in general has next to no romance, no one's pining after each other, the few times there are implications, it's very short. The most obvious one is Mechamaru and Miwa. Now imagine if Mechamaru and Miwa were the ones who got Ao No Sumika and Akari. Imagine they got 5 episodes dedicated to their story and Mechamaru dies on December 24th and Miwa's the one forced to put him out of his misery for betraying them to Mahito and Kenjaku.
Okay do you fucking see how ridiculous denying SatoSugu is? If Mechamaru and Miwa got all that even WITHOUT saying an 'I love you' no one would question their romance.
I know people keep making fun of shonen animes for having a stronger 'romance' between the two guy leads than with any other love interest but I've seen that stuff and even there it isn't nearly as deliberately romantic as SatoSugu. I can tell that Kuroko & Kagami, Gon & Killua or Levi & Erwin are supposed to be friends, the shipping thing is based on the established friendship stuff but SatoSugu are so blatant it's hard to think of another explanation.
I saw a point about how people are projecting western perspectives of romance on platonic friendship expression in a different culture, which I do get, I think it's a valid point. Idk much about how people express friendship in Japan but I have heard there's a lot more skinship and openness as compared to western cultures.
But w/ SatoSugu there isn't anything that can be read as purely platonic, there's always an ambiguity or it's directly romantic.

Satosugu makes me violently ill
I can and will go on and on about them I even made a google slideshow about them, most of the key points I mention are also from stuff I saw on tiktok so I don’t know exactly who to source
Same initials
Gege Akutami - “The names Gojo Satoru and Geto Suguru were made to complement each other as partners. A natural born genius and a genius through effort - one cannot coexist without the other. They are counterparts.”
Betta fish
“Two male betta fish (Siamese Fighting Fish) can’t be kept in the same fish tank because they would kill each other. In the wild, one always swims away. Geto was the one who swam away from Gojo, from jujutsu tech, from his old way of thinking. When he and Gojo did reunite again it ended up with his death at Gojo’s hands.
Geto’s fish is also black. Betta fish turn black due to stress and poor environment, which explains how distressed and thinner the black betta fish’s fins are compared to the white one, foreshadowing how Geto became more and more disillusioned with the Jujutsu world.
Geto closes his eyes instead of following the white betta fish which has the same eyes as Gojo, symbolizing that he’s convinced that Gojo wouldn’t understand his purpose while Gojo’s eyes follow the black fish, closely implying how even though Gojo wouldn’t follow Geto’s ideals, he would still follow his one and only friend. The fish act as a parallel for both Gojo and Geto’s character and also as a representation of yin and yang with white symbolizing Gojo and black symbolizing Geto.”
This
- Geto helps a young woman exorcising the curse, that has been terrorizing her. He calls her mother “Sato”, even though the older woman corrects him (her name is actually “Saito”), but Geto dismisses her, insisting on his variant and saying that “Sato is better”.
- Gojo calling out Geto’s name causes Geto’s hand to strangle Kenjaku.
“Suguru’s body fought back against Kenjaku, not because he was alive, but because protecting Satoru was like muscle memory.”
- The Imposter in Geto’s body chides Gojo for letting his mind “wander during a fight”. The sorcerer asks him about his real identity, but Geto’s imposter insists on being Suguru, mockingly accusing Satoru of having forgotten him. Gojo is not convinced: even though his Six Eyes tell him that the body and the cursed energy of the person in front of him must belong to no other person but Suguru, he does not believe his perception, it cannot be him, as Gojo’s soul knows it to be untrue.
“My six eyes tell me you are Suguru Geto, But my heart and soul know otherwise.”

So in case some of you don't know this, hi I'm dys and I'm a sucker for stupid cute fish.
I love small fish and of course I love bettas, my favorite type of betta fish is a Koi halfmoon betta fish but enough with that.
Lemme talk about JJK
So I have seen a lot of people talking about how the fish in this scene:
Tumblr media
are meant to represent how Geto is sick or slowly losing hope while Gojo is thriving. As some people know Betta fish have very sensitive fins, which is why they can be a pain in the ass to take care of, their fins can tear easily if you don't have a proper tank for them. One of the ways to tell if your betta fish is healthy is by how their fins look. They can go from this, to this if they live in the proper environment.
Tumblr media
Now, notice something about this betta? Yeah, is a healthy grown betta with fins that look exactly like the ones betta Geto has.
The betta used to represent Geto is a different type of betta from the one Gojo is, in fact the betta used for Geto has fins that are naturally like that, and look like they might have a tear when they don't. This is a Crowntail Betta, it is called like this because the fins give the illusion of the spikes on a crown.
Tumblr media
While Gojo resembles the text book definition of a Veiltail Betta but could also be a Halfmoon betta
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The funny thing is that obviously these two betta fish are male, even in the anime, betta fish are more flashy and have bigger fins than their female counterpart. Female bettas tend to have shorter fins, are smaller and tend to not be as flashy as male bettas.
So yeah, the betta representing Geto is not sick, it is just a different type of betta. Geto's betta is emitting black smoke while Gojo's betta is emitting a white smoke, which is just a representation of the paths that they took.
On another note, as many people know, Bettas are very aggressive and can be a bit too moody, to the point that they end up hurting themselves sometimes. Male bettas do not like to be around other male Bettas, they end up fighting one another and eventually one of them winds up dead if you keep them in the same tank. The same can happen with a lot of different fish that the betta sees as a threat.
Which is also a representation of Geto and Gojo. The bettas I think are meant to represent how in the end, they weren't going to be able to survive being in the same tank, and one of them had to leave, in this case Geto. Meaning that the two were never going to fully be able to co-exist with one another because of their own nature. So eventually, Gojo and Geto were going to drift apart for one reason or another.
ANYWAYS!
Tumblr media
Fun fact: Veiltail betta and halfmoon bettas are harder to take care of and are a lot more delicate because their fins can be very sensitive and easily get caught on things or tear from textures. it fits a princess like Gojo, poor babygirl.
Fun fact 2: Female bettas can be very aggressive as well but can form sororities with other female bettas so eventually you could have a tank full of female bettas as long as you don't introduce a male. Go lesbians go.
Sad fact 3: most bettas are extremely misunderstood. They can be trained and are very smart. They also need big tanks not small ones and hate the cold. They also can die from eating too much!
