#biblical literalism

I feel like it says something that American fundie Christians constantly brag about their strict biblical literalism and how they don't "pick and choose" from their holy book
And yet, when you look into the origins of their beliefs 9 times out of 10 it turns out it's based on some very specific interpretation of scripture by some insane person from the 1800s reading the bible wrong.
And said insane person also said shit like "Shove a barbed electrum rod up your urethra to cure tuberculosis!" or something equally batshit.

Hearing the story of Abraham & Issac really fucked me up as a kid. The actions of the adults around me made it clear that they'd kill me if God told them to.

OK so I've been thinking about that whole biblical literalism, fundamentalist, 'the bible is exactly literally absolutely true' mindset in relation to christian faith. Trying to concisely express my issues with it. I think this sums it up. The real question for these people is: "What if you were presented with conclusive, undeniable proof that something in the bible was not factually true." Like, say, the bible states the distance between two locations, and you can go and measure it, and they're a different distance apart. "If you saw that proof, would you still be Christian?" There are, like, four responses to this. Let me sum them up quickly. "Yes, I would." Cool. Then you don't need the bible to be literally true to have faith, do you? Come and join us over here where we can discuss things like metaphor and symbolic language, and also believe in useful things like carbon dating. This is the Normal Person response, where faith means actual faith. "No, I wouldn't." A ballsy and unexpected response, but okay. What you have there isn't *faith*, it's just a collection of facts you happen to believe are true. If your belief in your religion can be undone by going and looking at the physical world, you suck at faith. Go read keirkegaarde and come back to us. "I don't know, I'd need to think about it." Cool. Then if you've not already sat and thought about it, the idea doesn't matter to you, does it? Come and join us in camp 1, where metaphors exist.
"I would simply choose not to believe the evidence before my eyes." Oh Dear. You have rendered yourself largely incapable of logic and reasoning. Faith doesn't exist in a vacuum, and we're called on to go out into the world and act on it. If you're going to reject dealing with the external world, then your religion is at best useless, at worst dangerous. See, unlike the previous three responses, this is a dangerous position to hold. Once you can't be reasoned with by external sources, you're at serious risk of going all-the-way wrong. Rejecting the evidence of your eyes and ears is how the devil keeps you in his grip, frankly.
So yeah. This isn't gonna convince that sort of person. But I think it sums up my thoughts on the matter, and why I consider the bible-only fundie position to be basically incoherent and largely incompatible with actual religious faith. (also, frankly, the bible is a *more useful* text when you can approach it through the lens of metaphorical language. When you consider the stuff in it to be poetic or symbolic, then your interpretations can be far more nuanced and you can get more from it, compared to treating it as a sort of encyclopedia.)

Reading Darwin causes mass shootings. Mike Johnson says so. I have the transcript
By now you will know that the new Speaker of the US House of Representatives, Mike Johnson (Louisiana 4th District) was among those who voted against accepting the results of the 2020 Presidential election. You may also know that he is opposed to the concept of same sex marriage, which in some way he regards as undermining individual religious freedom, and wants to pass a law making abortion…

jews: hey so this word is so important that historically it was only ever said once a year on the holiest day of the year and only by one guy. this tradition stopped after the fall of the second temple and everybody has forgotten how to pronounce it, and it's been deemed unpronounceable. now, we use a word to replace it, but you're not allowed to say it outside of prayer or reading torah aloud. any printed material that has it written must be buried in a graveyard like a human, it can't simply be thrown out
christians: *treat the word like a fucking trivia question, have songs that just mispronounce say it on repeat for the entire chorus, make shitty ugly ass earrings with the word written on it, include the word in fun translation exercises like it's just like any other word*

Biblically accurate Leonardo! Real red eared sliders look like they have a little cat smile and stick their noses straight up in the air, it’s so cute! They are also very square looking, with boxy little heads and shells. I think you can tell the ball python inspiration in his head shape here tho, I’ve drawn a lot more snakes than turtles in my time lol
Real turtles’ shoulders are actually fused to a shoulder girdle formed by their shoulder blades and collarbone within their shells, so their arms kinda stick out elbows up and aren’t super flexible. Being mutated, the brothers would have flexible shoulders and independent bones in there, but I think they’d still have the thinner skin and soft scales around their necks, shoulders, and thighs that allows them to tuck into their shells and on their outer arms and calves I think they’d have much thicker scales to protect those soft parts.
They probably can’t fully fit into their shells due to their mutation, but I think the idea of them still being able to pull their heads in like a seal is quite funny.
Imagine swinging a sword at him and his head just goes “swoop!”, and then all there is is his nose poking out and he’s glaring at you all huddled in his shoulders. If I was a Foot Soldier I’d incapacitate myself just from laughing, no fighting needed.

time for me to review The Whole Bible. ready? ok. to be honest my favorite part of the gospels is Mark 8.22-26, when Jesus spits in some nice blind man's eyeballs and accidentally gives him cosmic consciousness. guy's just like "may i have a teaspoon of visual response to stimulus" and jesus is like "oh sure" and gives him God Vision. fuckin...ayahuasca sight that perceives the interconnectedness of all life. "oh is that not normal? does everyone not have that? nuts. ok try these eyes. are those more regular? great. maybe lie down by yourself for a while and please don't mention this to anyone"

Y'all will never understand just how FERAL my queer exmo ass is about Garmadon. Like oh he was turned to darkness over the course of thousands of years? Because of a SNAKE in a GARDEN??? Oh and he's got a "good" brother who's actually not all that great but he's doing his best to fit this impossible role that their father imposed on the both of them???? Oh he gets sent to hell not once but TWICE, once by his brother, the other time by his own son, and both due to circumstances outside of any of their control?????? And he's brought back to life as a shell of who he used to be but really it's all he ever was because he was never allowed a childhood or a chance to grow up or change, and once he wasn't evil he had to be perfect or else he could never be redeemed so he really didn't know who he was and he's finally getting a chance to figure himself out on his own terms??? AND A CUTE CAMERAMAN BOUGHT HIM A FUCKING PLANT??????
