Let's Have One
Pairing - Ben Barnes x reader!
Summary - Seeing you play and bond with his sister's baby sparked a new feeling of want and love in Ben.
Warnings - none!
This one is a thank you for a hundred followers!! I love all of you sm <33
Tumblr media
"You ready, love?" His soft voice addressed you as you finished applying some light compact powder, thus finishing your simple and elegant look.
"Yeah just done," you gave yourself a scan and smoothed down the simple blood red dress. And even with the three cups of caffeine that you had downed in the past two hours, a yawn still managed to escape.
"God I'm hopeless," you chuckled lightly, fighting the urge to rub your eyes so as to not ruin the eyeliner.
"I'm sorry," he whispered and pulled you closer by the waist. "I can see how tired you are and I can't do anything at all".
"Hey it's fine," you kissed his cheek, lingering for a while and nuzzling into his neck. "It was my fault for staying up late on that case".
"You sure you're feeling okay? No headaches or anything?"
"I'm fine," you smiled at his worried expression before grabbing his hand and leading him out of the door. "And besides it's Sarah's birthday party, I wouldn't miss it for the world, you know?"
"I know," he replied and followed you without a doubt, opening the car door like an absolute gentleman before getting in himself.
"I should've done that since I'm driving," you laughed when he shook his head.
"You open the doors for me at restaurants and I do it for cars. I think it's only fair".
The drive to the party was spent in silence, with the radio and Ben's humming being the only source of sound.
"You need to have a small holiday," he interrupted the quiet and took your free hand in his. "You're working too hard".
"I'll get one as soon as I finish this, I promise. This one's a lot more complicated than we expected so naturally it is taking more time".
"I find you absolutely cool have I ever mentioned that?" He asked with a teasing smirked on his face.
You couldn't help but laugh and smile yourself, "I think you have, indeed! For the past week or so".
"Seriously though, I still can't believe that I'm married to a crime branch officer. Who could've thought?"
"And it's beyond my understanding how I managed to snatch for myself a literal Disney prince for the record," you retorted and he grinned proudly.
You two had arrived at the destination and the car was parked quickly by your efficient hands.
As usual, he got out first and opened your door, offering a charming smile and his hand as if you were a queen.
You accepted it without a moment of hesitation and placed your palm on his cheek to give him a rather unexpected kiss, one that he immediately reciprocated.
"Goodness," he whispered to himself after you pulled away, leaving him rather breathless and following with a wink.
Ben just felt himself fall a little more in love.
As soon as you opened the doors, you were swarmed by his family members. Eveybody coming closer to greet you with enthusiasm while your husband watched from the sideline, a fond and adoring smile on his face.
"It's so good to see you sweetheart!" His mother cupped your cheeks and surveyed your face in the most motherly way possible. "You're resting well aren't you? Eating properly and getting enough sleep? He's taking care of you isn't he?" She pointed towards her son and playfully narrowed her eyes as if threatening him.
"Don't worry, Mum. He's always taking care of me," you laughed at his nervous and scared face.
"He better be," Thomas, his father patted him on the shoulder sternly before chuckling and pulling his boy in a hug.
You finally managed to extract yourself from his loving family and he joined your side a second later, straightening his blazer.
"I honestly think they love you more".
"Well, I know they love me more".
He rolled his eyes at your smirk and extended his arm which you took, placing your palm on his bicep.
"You look beautiful by the way," he muttered in you ear as you searched for an empty table. "Like breathtakingly gorgeous".
"Thank you," was all you managed to utter because the way he was looking at you made you feel all sorts of things.
"All these years and I can still make you blush huh?" He grinned knowingly while you poked and slapped his abdomen.
"Let's sit here," he pointed to one with two empty seats and you followed, settling down at last and letting out a sigh as you slipped your heels off.
His hands found their way to yours, as though it was second nature to do so. His fingers fiddled with yours, occupying his attention till the party began.
And it started soon enough with everyone standing up as the birthday girl cut her cake and both her husband and son placed a kiss on her cheeks.
"Awh," you said to yourself, a smile forming on your face at what you saw a perfect family. You wanted that too. You already had a loving husband, the only thing left now was an adorable little one.
You lips were pressed together as you looked at your man, letting your eyes rest on his sharp but smooth features.
How beautiful would it be to have a little baby, a perfect combination of yourself and someone whom you held so dear. Maybe they'd inherit his dark eyes and hair or yours, it would be beautiful either way.
How lovely would it be to see this small, tiny human being blossom into a fully mature adult with their own unique personality while also sharing some common traits.
Your heart felt heavy with love at the thought and Ben could certainly feel you planting holes in his face and he looked at you quizzically, though a smile was still there.
You shook your head, suddenly overcome with emotions as you rested your head on his shoulder, wanting to be close.
He didn't say anything and merely pulled you closer, if that was even possible while pressing a kiss to your hairline.
The celebrations were in full swing and all of the couples were currently on the dancefloor, swaying to the romantic rhythm which soon changed into an energetic beat.
"Goddamn," a breath escaped your lips as you pushed your sweaty hair out of your face. "You're quite the dancer, Barnes".
"Care for another one, my love?"
"Unfortunately though I have to decline your offer, darling. I'm quite tired," you laughed lightly and he guided you to sit on a chair.
He knelt down on the floor and touched your feet making your eyes widen as you instantly grabbed his hands.
"What the hell are you doing?"
"Shh just relax and trust me," he whispered and you watched as he undid the buckles of your heels and removed your sore feet from their tortuous clutches.
He then went forward to gently rubbing the top and sides and then moving towards the sole. The slight pressure helped immensely and you had to literally push him to get the man to stop.
"Thank you," you said into his ear once he settled down next to you, his chair close.
"Always," he murmured back and leaned down, capturing your lips in his and savouring the moment before it was broken by the party host.
Drinks and food were served once again, probably to energize the crowd for another round of crazy dancing. And Ben too had been dragged away by his many relatives, you laughing at his face that screamed 'save me from these hooligans'.
The sound was getting too loud for your rather sensitive ears so you decided to go to the more quieter areas but suddenly a loud crying stopped you in your tracks.
Pinpointing the source was easy enough and your heart dropped in your chest on seeing a toddler sitting on the grass all alone.
"Christ," you almost sprinted to the baby, recognizing him to be Louis, Ben's nephew. You sat down on your knees, offering him a smile and slowly moving closer.
"Hey Lou," you whispered, the smile still intact as you held out your palm. "You remember me, love?"
Fortunately the one-year-old had stopped crying though tears still stained his cheeks. He looked at you through wide set of eyes, his mind racing as he tried to identify.
After some time of silence you concluded that he didn't recognise you, which was fair considering you had only ever seen him twice in his life.
"Come here," you beckoned, now sitting on your heels and grinning as he raised his arms, allowing you to pick him up.
"Now what might you be doing here all alone, hmm?" You spoke softly, tucking him close to your body and finding a secluded spot in the party which didn't invite a lot of noise.
A sudden giggle was heard from him and you looked, surprised and laughing upon finding the cause. His tiny fingers had found your small butterfly necklace.
Sitting down on a chair you placed him on your lap, facing you. "Yeah that's a butterfly!" You smiled and gently wiped his moist cheeks.
"Fieee!" He grinned, his voice melting you immediately. He was an adorable boy, with blond hair and sea blue eyes.
"You wanna play a game? Let's play a game," saying so you kept him engaged for quite a long time and were entertained yourself.
"More!" He said happily, swinging his little feet as you tickled his sides making him squirm away but also lean in.
There was a tissue box kept on the table and you folded one to create a boat, an aeroplane and some simple shapes much to his excitement.
"Boat," he pointed towards the craft kept on the left and you clapped.
"Good job!" You chuckled and kissed the top of his head with every ounce of love. A wave of pride filling your chest at his correct answer.
Your shenanigans went on for another thirty minutes before Louis started yawning and rubbing his eyes.
"Someone's getting sleepy," you adjusted his position so that his face was resting comfortably on your chest and your palm was patting his back.
Ben's blazer that had been resting on your shoulders for almost the entire night was now shielding his nephew from the cold. You draped the black coat on him and it fit like a warm blanket.
"Goodnight sweetheart," you murmured and kissed his forehead before resting your cheek gently on his head.
"Nigh Nigh," he replied, eyes closed completely and one of his fist grasping on your necklace.
Looking at him sleeping so peacefully made your tired body feel dizzy as well and before you knew it, you were knocked out.
Ben Barnes on the other hand was roaming around the hall for the past ten minutes, trying to locate you amongst the crowd. He was getting agitated and couldn't help but release a sigh of relief upon seeing you.
Walking closer a small noise of surprise left him as he saw you fast asleep with his nephew resting on your chest. His heart took up its pace as he gazed at the domestic scene, his brain already creating various scenarios which depicted you and a tiny one nestled in your arms.
He swallowed, sitting down in the empty share and pulling out his phone to click a picture, knowing it would last longer.
His eyes surveyed every inch of you in that beautiful moment.
Moving from your creaseless eyelids to the small movement of your lips while you were asleep, then to the protective but gentle hold you had on the baby who was snuggling closer to your cozy figure under his own blazer making his smile widen.
"God I adore you," he said with a small chuckle, getting up to press his lips to the top of your head.
"Oh thank goodness," his sister Sarah's voice was heard from behind as she panted a little.
"What's wrong?" He stood up straight, concerned upon seeing her frazzled state.
"I left Lou with an uncle of ours and I saw the said person drunk some time ago and freaked out," she took deep breath, glad that her son was safe and sound.
He scoffed is disbelief at the carelessnes shown before turning back to you as you were rubbing you eyes and blinking rapidly, trying to move before remembering the child that was alseep too.
Ben and Sarah watched with a smile as you adjusted the coat, tucking it carefully and brushing the small strands of hair from his face.
"Oh hey," you greeted when your eyes fell upon the pair and you stood up, "He fell asleep as we were playing," you explained and handed him to his mother.
She took her son in one arm and pulled you in a warm embrace, "Thank you. I was worried sick after not seeing him," she said, shuddering slightly and you offered her a comforting smile.
"Its okay I can understand, glad to say he was in good hands," you said softly and they nodded while laughing.
"See you around then, visit soon, Ben," she hugged her cousin and bid goodbye.
"You slept well?" Your husband asked and brought you close to him while you arms went around his neck.
"Mhmm, needed that power nap".
"I've been thinking.." He began slowly making you pull away to look at his face, noticing the slightly nervous expression.
"Go on," you encouraged him, leaning ahead.
"We've been married for almost four years noe, yeah? And have been together for ever longer," he said and you nodded. "How about- How about we have a child now?"
Your eyes widened and you stilled in his arms, your heartbeat increasing with both nervousness and excitement at his declaration, "Y- You sure?"
"Why wouldn't I be?" He questioned and gently swayed you two together. "I want a future with you, my love. Have been dreaming about it for ages".
"Me too," you admitted, a small smile forming against your lips. "Seeing Lou again just increased that feeling tenfold".
"I second that. And honestly? I really want to take the next step now. I think we're ready. What'd you say?"
"I think I'm ready too".
"Well then, I supoose we should start practicing soon," he said, now a teasing smirk on his face making you blush.
"Indeed," you replied and the two of you laughed, placing your foreheads against each other and simply staring into each other's eyes, making a whole new world of promises by sharing looks.

Darkling X Reader Word Count: 1656 | Warnings: not proofread, brief mentions of battle, hints at past abuse if you squint, super angst turns to tooth-rotting fluff

Note: dorogoy is the Russian for 'sweetheart' “Leave us.”
The Black General strode in, his eyes murderous and his fists balled at his sides. Despite the warm summer night, the chill in his voice was enough to send a shiver up everyone’s spine. The two Healers rose from the sides of your cot where they’d been tending your injuries. They bowed quickly and kept their eyes glued to the ground as they scuttled out of the tent, leaving you and the Darkling alone.
When the sounds of the retreating Healers’ footsteps had been swallowed in the gentle murmur of the camp outside, his eyes finally met yours. He looked as if he were about to break apart, his body practically abuzz with barely contained rage.
“Aleks, I’m fine,” you chided him, rolling your eyes at his dramatics. “It’s just a burn. I’ll survive.”
Darkness blossomed around him, swallowing the dim candlelight on the inside of your tent. His jaw was clenched so tightly you worried he’d break a tooth, the veins in his forehead pulsing as he tried to regain control of himself. You’d seen his power a thousand times, but even still it startled you. You smoothed your face into a mask of calm, refusing to show him your instinctual fear.
“You almost died, dorogy.” He sank down on the edge of your cot as the shadows receded into him like water soaks into a sponge. “You are decidedly not fine.”
You smiled at him, shifting slightly to make room for him on the cot next to you. He was watching you, his eyes drinking you in. You could hear his next question before he even asked it.
“Are the Healers treating you fairly?” The whisper of a threat hung off Aleksander’s words. You knew that his fear was that the other Grisha would shun you because of his affection for you. A fear you’d tried to quell a thousand times before. If only he knew how terrified the others were of hurting you, of disappointing you, or of otherwise mistreating you…
You reached out, running your fingertips lightly along the back of his hand. He watched you, waiting for an answer.
“They’re treating me perfectly,” you assured him emphatically. “I have everything I need.”
He didn’t respond immediately, transfixed by the circular patterns you wove along the back of his hand. His eyes glazed over, his shoulders dropping slightly as he let the facade of the Black General relax in your presence. You watched him carefully, wondering how he managed to maintain such composure and control in the midst of battle. You’d seen him out there, on the battlefield: an avenging angel, all rage and cruelty, his black kefta fluttering like a flag, cutting down wave after wave of Fjerdan. He’d barely flinched, barely shown any sign of his powers draining him. It filled you with a strange combination of sorrow, pride, and lust.
“Aleks?” Your voice, though quiet and gentle, snapped the moment like a dry twig. He looked up at you expectantly. “Are you alright?”
You could tell as soon as the words left your lips that you’d said something wrong. He recoiled away from you as if he were the one that had been burned. His eyes widened in a mixture of shock and horror, followed immediately by self-loathing. You reached out, but not quick enough. He rose from the cot, stepping away from you.
“How can you ask that of me? After what you saw today? After what I put you through? You want to know if I am alright?” His composure was unraveling, his dark eyes turning into bottomless pits of fury with nowhere to go but inward. He’d once told you that the most unexpected part of living so long was the extent to which he had come to loathe himself. You hadn’t understood it then, but now you caught a glimpse of just how deep Aleksander’s malice towards himself actually went.
The shadows sprung from his fingers with ease, devouring the tent’s light and swarming around you like bees. The air around you crackled with their presence, although they didn’t touch you. Across the tent, consumed by a darkness so complete he almost vanished entirely, Aleksander shook with the explosive force of his power. His chin was tipped back and his mouth open as if screaming, although the only thing pouring out of his throat was more darkness. His eyes lost their whites, now just two blackened sockets, lifeless and unholy-looking.
Terror seized you. Your heart jolted as adrenaline ricocheted through your veins. You knew Aleksander would never hurt you, although you weren’t sure how much  of the man you loved was still with you in that tent.
You called out to him, but somehow your voice vanished in the space between you two. As if you’d been plunged underwater, your scream sounded distorted and dull. Aleksander didn’t even flinch.
Wincing through the pain, you flung your legs over the edge of the cot. The shadows made way for you like a river parts around rocks. The hairs on the back of your arms and neck stood up straight, your instincts screaming at you to run! Leave! Kill him! Get out!
Summoning your strength and with a sharp inhale, you forced your legs to hold your weight as you stood. The burns that climbed up the left side of your body from your kneecap to your jaw felt white hot, but you grit your teeth against the urge to pass out and took a shaky step forward. Again, the shadows pouring out of Aleksander moved to allow your passage. A distant part of you idly wondered what the rest of the camp could see, if anything, of the spectacle unfolding around you.
Your feet almost slipped out from under you in the damp grass. Your reflexes dulled by exhaustion and pain, you lost your balance and pitched forward. You struck out with your arms to brace your fall, twisting your face away from the direction of impact. There was a moment of free fall before you felt strong arms catching you, artfully avoiding your burns.
Aleksander lifted you easily off your feet in a sweeping motion. You didn’t open your eyes until you felt your back settle against the cot. When you did, a familiar face hovered over you. All trace of his shadows gone, all you saw now was a man. A leader, a saint maybe, a King certainly: but a man still, exhausted and confused.
Before he had a chance to speak, you pressed a finger to his lips. Your head was spinning with pain, but you forced yourself to stay present.
“I’m not afraid of you, Aleks,” you insisted. You held his gaze defiantly, challenging him to argue with you. For once in his stubborn life, he held his tongue and let you finish. “I don’t resent you for who you are. I don’t fight because you command me as my general, or even because you ask me as my lover. I fight beside you because I love you, and I believe in what we’re doing.”
For all his wisdom, you knew that there were parts of your heart that Aleksander would never understand. You’d accepted as much a long time ago. But you’d be damned if you let him rip himself apart over it.
He swallowed thickly, as if trying to take in what you’d told him.
“I don’t… understand. How you can feel that way. About… someone like me. Someone who is what I am. There’s… sometimes-most of the time- it doesn’t seem like there’s enough left of me to love.” You let him finish, his words coming out chopped and halting. It seemed to take almost as much out of him as his powers did, and the sincerity with which he spoke made you smile gently. When he was finished, you reached up and cupped his cheek, your thumb carefully tracing the ragged volcra scar that bisected his cheek.
“Aleks. Just because all the others never showed you love doesn’t mean no one ever will.”
You watched as his memory clicked into place, recognizing the very words he’d said to you the night he’d finally gotten you to tell him about the others. The men before him. The ones who’d tried and failed to love you, and the ones who’d only wanted to hurt you. Those had been the words he’d said, and the reason you’d fallen in love with him. You hadn’t realized how long you’d been waiting to give those words back to him.
He marveled at you for a moment as if seeing you for the first time before he spoke. “I wasn’t talking about any others,” he said quietly.
You shook your head, smiling. “Of course you were,” you answered. “The other lives, the other versions of yourself. That’s all you talk about because it’s all you know. You’ve lived with yourself for so long you’ve forgotten that there’s any way to feel about yourself but hatred.”
You let your hand drop, a sudden wave of exhaustion crashing over you. He noticed, catching your hand halfway down and guiding it to the top of your sheets.
“Dorogoy,” he started, hesitating a moment on the pet name he’d given you. “Where have you been all my lives?”
You beamed at him, finally hearing a break in the tension of his voice. He smiled back - not a broad smile, but enough to touch his eyes.
“Right here, Aleks,” you replied as you let your eyes drift closed for sleep.
You didn’t let yourself fully succumb to rest until you felt his warmth lay down next to you, his arms ever so carefully snaking around your torso. He tucked you closer to him, and you buried your head in his neck, breathing in the scent and the feel of him. You felt yourself slide off into sleep just as he started singing you an old Ravkan lullaby…

Next Thing You Know
Pairing - Ben Barnes x reader!
Summary - a fic taking us through the journey of your wonderful relationship with Ben Barnes.
Warnings - none
You swear that you're stayin' single next thing you know. You meet a girl at a bar and next thing you know. You get her laughin', it's 2 AM. You're tellin' your buddies three months in.
"Why do you always want to drag me to places I don't wanna go?" Ben frowns at his brother who just grins cheekily and doesn't let go of the firm hold of his hand.
"You need to loosen up a little brother," Jack says simply and they get into his car, him obviously being the one driving. "Even Mum and Dad think you're a bit too tense these days for God's sake!"
Ben rolled his eyes and turned on the radio, immediately smiling at his favorite Bob Dylan song that had just started. He had planned to just lay down in bed and peacefully read, something he hadn't done in ages.
But unfortunately that's not what 26 year olds normally did, which was very sad indeed. A nice little reading session with soft romantic tunes playing in the background was suddenly considered old-fashioned.
"Here we are!" Jack exclaimed cheerfully and they got out, him throwing an arm around his brother who merely chuckled and together they entered the rather crowded club.
"This is intense," Ben murmured after scanning the place. What with its loud, blaring music, dim but flashing lights and an over-excited crowd, it seemed a bit intimidating.
"Its just been way too song since you've been in a club," Jack retorted but then his face turned into one of glee after spotting his best mates who waved frantically.
"Not even been 10 minutes and already ditching me huh?"
"I'm so sorry," he said apologetically but smiled when Ben laughed.
"It's all good, go on hang out with them".
"You'll be okay by yourself right?"
"Of course, I'm not 10!"
"See ya then," saying so Jack bid him goodbye and Ben watched as he left before seating himself near the bar, ordering a light drink just to keep him warm and fuzzy.
"Thank you," he smiled at the bartender who bowed and brought the glass to his lips, the liquid barely grazing them before something- or rather someone, took his entire attention.
There you were, walking right towards him. His eyes gazed at the young woman who looked too beautiful even dressed in simple clothes like black ripped jeans paired with a leather jacket. Your raven hair that was tied into a half-ponytail simply added to the look.
She was exquisite, he remembered thinking.
He blinked, snapping out of his trance when the said woman was seated right beside him, looking positively bored and somehow a little out of place, even with her appropriate clothes.
He suddenly felt like a very shy teenager and focussed instead on his drink, whilst looking at you from the corner of his eyes. His cheeks went warm when you finally seemed to notice the rather handsome man sitting next you.
He saw your eyes widen and your mouth open a little, and he felt confused. Was something wrong with his face?
But then the reason for your staring became clear when you made a statement.
"Um hello, you're Ben Barnes aren't you?" You said softly and he was enraptured by your smooth voice that was slightly deep for a girl.
"Oh yeah, yes I'm him," he said quickly and gave you a blinding smile that you reciprocated with immense happiness and he felt a giddiness in his chest that had nothing, absolutely nothing to do with the drink that had now gone totally unnoticed.
"You played Prince Caspian," you grinned and he nodded, so excited that you had seen the movie.
"Did you like the movie?"
"It was brilliant," you said, your dark eyes appearing starry due to the lights. "I love the books and the movies just gave me a face for the characters that I so love".
"I take you as a reader then?" He asked with some eagerness.
"Oh absolutely! I honestly was going to spend this evening in my cosy bed reading a great romance book than coming here. But well my friends are quite persuasive".
He was over the moon at finding a common factor between you two. "I was going to do the same! But my brother dragged me in here, said that I needed to loosen up," he mimicked Jack making you laugh.
"Sometimes all you need to loosen up are some beautiful books and good music," you said, the two things were very close to your heart and Ben understood instantly.
"I agree," he smiled and you smiled too. Glad to find another person who had interests very similar to your own, and that too in a time when everybody was intent on partying the night away.
"Would it be okay if we geek over some books maybe outside?" Ben asked and mentally facepalmed. God he couldn't even talk properly to a girl.
"Yeah I'd like some quiet, it's really noisy in here," your eyebrows furrowed and you walked down, drinks in both of your hands as you sat down on a bench.
The rest of the night was spent talking and talking and talking. Ben didn't think he had ever talked this much before, much less to a girl but here he was, and here you were.
It just seemed so easy and he had this strange, warm feeling in his heart that he knew exactly what it was.
"What's your favorite quote from a book?" He asked, tilting his head in curiosity.
You were stumped, you had read hundreds of books and it was as if suddenly you had read none. "Good question, Ben".
His heart fluttered and red stained his cheeks, though thankfully for him you couldn't see it because of the dark.
And abruptly there was this gentle, loving smile on your face and all Ben wished in that moment was for him to be the cause.
"In vain have I struggled, it will not do. My feelings will not be repressed. You must allow me to tell you how ardently I admire and love you," you whispered the words.
And he smiled, looking down before meeting your eyes, each one's irises as dark as the night sky. "Austen hmm?" He said softly, loving the way your smile widened.
The man was already on the brink of falling head over heels and couldn't wait for this to get further. It was as if he seemed to know, like maybe an instinct or a feeling, whatever it was, it just made him gravitate towards you.
And lucky for him, you felt the same. Albeit it took you time than him, you were too on the edge of loving this man from the entirety of your heart.

That she ain't moving in, the next thing you know. There's a U-haul trailer, next thing you know. Your old apartment is y'all's new place. There goes the carpet but the deer head stays.
"How much stuff do you even have?" Ben questioned indignantly as you carried boxes after boxes up the elevator. "You do know that we have a well furnished home right?"
You rolled your eyes, sweat dripping down your face and down your neck as you strained under the weight of a particularly heavy one. "Hush Barnes, I'm still shifting in your apartment aren't I?"
He simply shook his head with a smile and dropped two boxes on the floor with a loud thump, grimacing at the sound and praying hard that there wasn't anything breakable.
"You seriously need to do some downsizing, love," he muttered, slumping down on the sofa with a sigh.
You frowned but knew he was right. You had way too much stuff and you doubted that all of it was absolutely necessary. "Yeah I'll do that when setting everything up".
"And god what is the meaning of this Benjamin?" You shrieked when your gaze fell on the carpet underneath the centre table.
"What?!" He grumbled, reluctantly opening his eyes to see what made you react like that. "Oh that".
"Yes that".
"Uhm I was gonna replace it-"
"He's been saying that for the past year dear, I've forgotten the amount of times I had to tell him to change that wretched thing," his mum's voice interrupted and she stepped inside, followed by her husband.
Your eyes narrowed at your boyfriend who cringed under the stares of two women whom he loved dearly.
"Cat got your tongue, Barnes?" Thomas, his father grinned amd stepped in front of his son. Clearly enjoying the predicament.
"I swear I was going to change it," he mumbled and then gave you his best puppy dog eyes.
"Don't you look at her like that young man!" Tricia Barnes pointed ger finger which immediately shut his attempts at wooing you.
You pressed your lips tightly to prevent a snort at his downcast expression. "You gotta listen to your mum, Ben".
"I'm glad at least someone sensible agrees with me," she shot a playful look at the two men and smiled lovingly at you. "You got everything up, darling?"
"Yeah! I'll start unpacking after I make us some lunch," you smiled and the woman simply beamed while your boyfriend watched in disbelief as you laughed together.
"That's always how it is, lad," Thomas said with a glint in his eyes and Ben couldn't help as he chuckled. "But that is also how you know that you've got a good one".
He let out a genuine smile at that and let his eyes linger on your figure as you laughed with his mum while making lunch. You were the best decision he'd ever made, and the best instinct he'd ever felt.
"My god you're having it bad aren't you?" His dad cackled loudly earning strange but pleased looks from the two women.
While Ben's cheeks went red, "Yeah.. I guess I am having it down real bad".
"She is a wonderful girl, and I'm sure she's going to take good care of you, buddy. And in return make sure you never deny her the simple pleasures of life. Most people think women are extremely complex creatures, but that's definitely not the case, you know?"
Ben turned around completely to face his father and that's when Thomas knew that his son was falling in love. And a small smile graced his face because what else would a father want for his gentleman of a son?
"They don't want you to spend hundred dollars on a bouquet of flowers, they'll be happier with a single rose plucked from a field on any random day. When girls say they like sweet messages, it doesn't mean that you should write a five pages long essay about the reasons why you love her. It simply means a good morning when you're not together, a basic did you eat yet or a small text saying how proud you are of her".
Ben nodded eagerly and enthusiastically, he had already unconsciously done all of these things and was glad to know that he was going on the right track. He had never really understood the significance behind his actions, but now he did.
"What're you two gossiping about?" Tricia asked and sat down between them, glancing at them both.
"Just giving our boy some relationship advice," Thomas said and winked at his son.
She raised her eyebrows in surprise, "Well heavens only know what all you said to him. But I'm sure it was priceless," she said with a small smile while looking at Ben who nodded.
"Just remember sweetheart that anybody can buy luxurious gifts for their woman. But the truly romantic things are those little things you do everyday to show that you care and think about them," she patted his cheek.
"Yes mum," he agreed with every single word his parents are told him. He was really blessed to have such wonderful parents.
"Here's the lunch!" You finally entered the living room and set down two containers filled with delicious gravy and meat.
"Hey- Love- Careful there it's boiling," Ben muttered, hot on your heels as you carried the steaming pot.
"Yeah yeah don't worry I'm okay".
"I'll grab the plates and glasses," he said and darted back into the kitchen.
"Hey will you get some forks too please?" You called out after arranging everything properly on the table.
"Yeah bringing".
"Thank you".
The parents exchanged looks at the simple, basic conversation which seemed almost meaningless but somehow held such depth.
And after a fabulous dinner and bidding goodbye to Ben's family, you two had started the work of setting all the things in place. It was tedious to the core but helped greatly in relieving any kind of stress that was plaguing your mind.
And after about two whole hours of hardwork, all was finally done and you took a look around to smile at your new home.
"Ben?" You went in search for him to see your boyfriend in the kitchen, carrying two mugs of coffee.
"Yeah?" He placed the mugs on the table and sat down, gesturing for you to do the same while slowly sipping his caffeine.
"Where'd you keep my guitar? I don't remember seeing it-"
You were cut off by him pointing towards the piano that was kept in one corner of the living room and your eyes drifted to see your gorgeous black acoustic hanging on a wall right beside the instrument.
"That's the perfect place," you said, looking at him with delight.
"I'm glad. Maybe we can do some covers and record them someday," he suggested and took your hand, intertwining your fingers and brushing his lips against your knuckles.
"Yeah we can do that," you smiled and closed your eyes when he leaned in to kiss you with every ounce of passion and love.
===============================
Next thing you know, you're saving money like never before just to spend it all at a jewelry store. Gettin' down on one knee on her mama's porch just prayin' she don't say no.
"Never thought I'd see this day," Jack shook his head and looked at his brother and laughed. "Is the size correct?"
"Of course it bloody is," Ben muttered, slightly offended that he'd even doubt that.
"Should I pack it then, Mr Barnes?" The attender asked with a smile on her face, pleased at Ben's choice.
"Yes please thank you," he nodded, hands shaking slightly due to nervousness.
The middle aged lady noticed it and looked warmly at the fumbling young man, "Your woman is one lucky girl".
"I think this one is luckier to have her," Jack interjected and they all laughed.
"That's true actually," Ben murmured and took the precious, black coloured box, keeping it safely in his pocket.
"You are so whipped, my god. It's actually adorable I must say".
"Sure it is. When are you giving me the chance to pay you back for the hell that you've given me the last five years?" He asked, smirking slightly ad they got into the car and began driving home.
"That won't happen soon so don't you worry your pretty little head about it".
Ben merely smiled cheekily and parked his car in the driveway before getting out and walking into his first home.
You were currently on a business trip in another country amd wouldn't be back for a week at the most. And it was safe to say that your boyfriend missed you. Terribly.
"Hey Dad," he greeted his father who was watching a badminton match. "Since when did you start watching badminton?"
"Since my lovely daughter in law introduced me to it rather enthusiastically," he said with a knowing glint making Ben stare.
"Yes yes we know all about your shenanigans," his mother entered the living room and all three of them gave him matching grins.
"So let's see, where's the ring?" She asked excitedly and Ben pulled out the small box and handed it to her.
"Goodness love it's beautiful," she breathed, staring at the elegant silver band. "It's perfect for her," she said to herself and her eyes became teary.
"My baby's all grown up," she laughed through the tears and pulled her eldest in a loving embrace. Her not even understanding just how quickly time had passed. Just yesterday he was running around the house, singing his lungs out to songs playing on the radio. And now here he was, earning himself big from the industry and using that to buy his future wife a bond to last the next seven lifetimes.
"I'm so proud of you," she whispered in his ear and he tightened his arms, feeling like a little boy again.
He could feel himself getting emotional and rapidly blinked back the tears, not really wanting to cry in front of them.
"I'm proud to have you as my son, Ben," Thomas patted him on his back, his eyes too shining and ruffled his hair, exactly the way he did when the young man before him was nothing but a boy.
"And doesn't matter how much trouble I've caused you in this lifetime," Jack began his speech making everyone chuckle. "You really are the best brother-" he broke off when Ben pulled his younger brother in a bone-crushing hug.
They all laughed and the amount of warmth radiating through the room could really rival the sun's. But there was only one thing missing. One person who was not present.
And his smile fell just a tiny bit, but Tricia Barnes noticed it, of course she did. "Call her," she said with a smile and squeezed his shoulder while he nodded and walked towards his room, immediately dialing up your number and lying down on his bed.
You picked up after a few rings, "Hello?"
"Hey," he said, voice barely above a whisper and he cleared his throat.
"Ben," you breathed out. It had been seven days since you'd last seen each other and there was this ever present tightness in your chest. "What's wrong love? You okay?"
"Yeah," he sniffed and rolled over on his side, staring out of the window. "Now I am".
Your lips twitched a little, "How are you?" You asked the question as though you hadn't spoken to each other just the night before.
"I'm okay. I just.. Miss you," he swallowed, unable to keep back the emotions that wanted to escape.
You immediately took notice of the change in his voice and your heart broke a little, "I'm so sorry. I wish I could be there, Ben. I really wish that so much".
"No don't be silly! You're there for work, you should be focusing on that," he said and took a hold of himself. Not wanting to bother you and distract you from your job.
"You are more important, Barnes".
He looked down with a smile, "I'm serious. I just called you 'cause I missed you that's all. And my family there decided that it was a good day to say some really heartfelt words and make me emotional".
You chuckled softly, "Should I add to that long list of compliments?"
"Please don't," his eyes widened as though he expected you to do just that. He thought he might as well breakdown if you did.
"Nah don't worry I'm not that cruel".
"Sure," he said, already having a mental list of instances that proved otherwise.
"Oh shut up that was not cruelty," you said, understanding exactly what was in his mind.
"Oh yeah? Might I remind you of the time that you 'accidentally' dyed my hair blond?"
You snorted and that made him go off even more, "It didn't come off for a month!"
"Well atleast it wasn't pink".
"How reassuring," he said dryly and you roared with laughter. One simple memory emitting such joy that he couldn't help but join in.
"When are you coming back? I miss you, darling," he said once you two had both controlled yourselves.
"As soon as I can, love, I promise," you sighed. "Hey Ben, I'm really sorry but I gotta go".
"Yeah it's alright. Don't worry about me, I'll be fine. Just finish your work. And don't you overwork yourself or skip any meals because of stress or I swear I'm going to come there and feed you myself if I have to".
"I wouldn't put it past you at all," you whispered.
"I'm proud of you, yeah? And I love you, so so much baby".
"I love you too, so so much".
Two weeks had passed since the conversation and Ben and his family were currently at your house. Everybody was sitting in the garden, soaking in the sunlight and enjoying the warm weather.
You were wearing a gorgeous sundress and were leaning against the tree while in conversation with your mum. Your hands on the other hand were nestled in Ben's soft hair, running your fingers through them as he rested his head on your thigh.
You were deep in conversation when he opened his eyes and removed the sunglasses to simply look at you properly and god did he fall in love again right there.
Your brown hair shone gold under the sunlight and your dark irises too had a muddy shade to them. Your body seemed to radiate a divine glow and he was enraptured.
And of course that's exactly when his mum called you and stood up straight, forgetting completely about Ben.
"Oh shit I'm so sorry," you couldn't help but laugh at his adorably frustrated face.
"Where are you going?" He grumbled and pulled you right back on him making your eyes widen as you glanced at you mum who pretended to check her nails.
"Your mother is calling me, I have to go".
He suddenly stilled and immediately let go of your hand, almost pushing you towards the house earning a strange look.
"Way to be obvious Ben," Jack snorted and threw a pebble.
"God I can't do this, she's gonna say no," his hands flapped nervously as he paced around the lawn, every negative thought making its appearance and troubling him.
But of course you didn't say no, of course you didn't deny such a big happiness to ever enter your life.
And naturally you nodded, silent tears dripping down your cheeks which mirrored Ben's face. He slid the ring onto your finger, your families erupting in a huge round of applause at the action.
"I love you so much sweetheart, more than you could ever dream of," he said, jaw clenching slightly and eyes bloodshot.
"I love you too my Disney prince," you whispered and the two of you chuckled despite the tears and my god the kiss that followed had his heart almost jumping out of his chest due to the sheer amount of love, passion and promise.
