it’s a never-ending summer (it’s getting way too hot)
A Hunger Games AU
16k Words | Rated M
“You’re okay.” It was a voice he’d recognise anywhere and instead of yanking away as he once might have, Sokka sat and breathed quivering breaths as Zuko ran a thumb along his neck and eased him through his breakdown. “You should hate me,” he whispered, broken and cracking. Zuko squeezed, “I know.” He was gone by the time Bato found Sokka again, nothing left of their encounter besides the warmth still etched into his neck and an odd feeling settling into his gut.
OR
As Victors of the Hunger Games, Sokka and Zuko navigate a complicated relationship in a world just waiting to watch them tear each other apart.

Teasing With Serious Consequences
Tumblr media
Fandom: Fourth Wing - The Empyrean
Pairing: Xaden/Violet - Riorgail
Rating: Explicit
Summary: Violet is set on getting Xaden to fuck her, no matter how much she has to tease him before he snaps.
@kinktober2023 and on AO3
AN: This is once again a shorter and tamer entry for this Kinktober collection. It's set in the same verse as Part 1 (Not Playing Fair) with Xaden now being an instructor, but also shares some lore with Part 3 (Little Kitten).
. o O o .
“I’d be wearing that dark blue nightgown, the one you like so much, that closes with those ribbons at the front. The last time I wore it, you used your teeth to remove it, remember? And then went down on me for half of the night. Gods, that was so hot. I’d like to keep it on a little longer this time, though. I like how the silk feels against my nibbles.”
“Violet!”
I suppress a giggle and dunk a bit of cauliflower into the sauce before bringing it to my mouth. My eyes flutter shut and I hum at the rich taste of the gravy. So delicious.
Somewhere across the dining hall, silverware clatters onto a plate, and I smirk.
“Or maybe I’d wear one of those full-body stockings you have in that armoire of yours instead,” I muse. “You know, one of those that just hug my body with bands of silk and lace in between. I imagine those would be pretty sexy, with how they highlight every curve but leave nothing to the imagination. I wonder how it feels when you touch me through one of those, with the fabric against my skin. Oh, or you could trace one of those bands with your mouth, aaaall the way down between my thighs. I bet I’d be completely soaked before you even made half of the way.”
In my mind, I hear Xaden growl. “Violet, stop it! Lunch break is almost over, and I can’t go to combat training with a boner.”
This time, the giggling slips past my guard, drawing curious glances from Rhiannon and the others. But I don’t bother explaining; they know about Xaden’s and my telepathic link by now.
I debate showing mercy on Xaden; as an instructor, he should appear professional. But teasing him is just so much fun, and after he edged me for nearly the entire night, I deserve some compensation, right?
“You’re right,” I throw back at him with fake compliance. “And it’s not as if you could fuck me right here on one of the tables to get it out of your system.”
“Violet…” This time, he almost sounds pleading, and I smirk.
“Although, just think of the shocked expression on Dain’s face when you push into—”
Somewhere across the dining hall, a glass shatters and people yelp. I check in with Xaden to make sure that nobody got hurt, then, with a huge grin on my face, take my trey and stand. “Let’s head over to the gym,” I say cheerfully. “Can’t wait for our combat training class today.”
. o O o .
“I mean,” Rhiannon mutters as we stand near the back of the room and supposedly watch Liam and Imogen spar. “I always knew Riorson was hot. That’s basically just a fact. But… damn, Violet? Is he really that packed?”
My lips twitch but I manage to keep them under control as I throw a glance to where Xaden gives instructions to another pair of fighters on the mat in front of him. He looks scrumptious as ever, his muscles clearly visible beneath his black clothes, arms crossed in front of him, and with that line of deep concentration between his eyes that I always want to kiss away.
But that’s not even it today, not the reason why half the class throws glances at him, some blushing and some giggling. It’s the clearly visible bulge at his crotch that keeps drawing everyone’s attention away from his instructions, the outline of his cock more than just guessable.
“Yep,” I quip back at Rhi. “He is.”
As if he was listening in on our conversation, Xaden’s eyes flicker to meet mine and he throws me a half heated and half reprimanding look.
I throw a sweet smile back at him, combined with a memory of me on my knees in front of him, of his hard cock buried deep in my throat, of my muscles convulsing around him as I choke…
His lips press into a thin line and I think I can see his cock twitch, even from the distance.
“Stop it!” he growls into my mind. But we both know that he could shut me out at any moment. The fact that he doesn’t do it speaks volumes.
“Or what? Will you fuck me right here on the floor?”
I know I’ll probably pay for this later, teasing him where he can’t do anything about it, but it’s absolutely worth it when he shifts his weight and his eyes flutter shut for the briefest of moments.
The rest of our training continues much the same. I keep teasing Xaden with more and more graphic images or descriptions while Rhiannon and eventually Ridoc, too, make more and more direct comments about the tent he’s sporting. I really have to give it to Xaden, though; aside from his raging erection, he doesn’t let anything show. I thought at least a dozen times he’d drag me off into some shadowy corner then and there, but to his credit, he kept in control.
Until the end of class.
We’re all filing out of the gym, the next group already waiting, and head over to the flying field, when my feet suddenly get stuck. Glancing down, I spot a slim band of shadows around my ankles, and my eyes flare.
Finally!
“Vi? Are you okay?” Rhiannon cocks her head at me, Ridoc and Sawyer already a few steps ahead.
“Yeah, I…” I lick my lips, thinking about what excuse I could give her. And decide to hell with it. “Go ahead. And tell Kaori I’ll be a few minutes late.” I smirk.
For the fraction of a second, Rhi’s eyes widen, then she grins. “Alright. Have fun, girl.”
“Not sure, fun is the right word,” a voice coming from the shadows to my right murmurs once Rhiannon is out of earshot.
A shiver runs down my spine as I turn to where I know Xaden has to be, somewhere. “Oh, I had a lot of fun so far,” I keep teasing and slip into his cloud of shadows, hidden neatly in a windowless alcove.
He moves me faster than I can comprehend, my back hitting the stone wall, and I gasp. He’s right in front of me, giving me hardly any room to breathe or time to think before his hands wrap around my thighs and he lifts me up, my legs around his hips.
“Don’t you have a class to teach?” I gasp, humming when I feel his bulge grind into me. I don’t care that I can’t see a thing, not when I’m with Xaden.
“They can wait a couple of minutes. This won’t take long. Now, quiet.”
With one harsh motion, Xaden tears at my trousers and they split open at the seam, leaving me entirely exposed in a heartbeat. I yelp when his fingers push into me without a warning, and I have to clamp my hand over my mouth to keep from making more noises. Fuck, this is exactly what I’d hoped for, a quick romp between classes, desperate and messy.
Xaden snorts, though whether in response to my thoughts or to something else, I’m not sure. “You’re wet, good. Wouldn’t want to hurt you.” He withdraws his fingers sooner than I like but thankfully replaces them with his cock in an instant. Had he already been waiting here half-undressed in the shadows?
However, I don’t get the chance to think about that when he spears into me without a warning and my cry of surprise and stinging pleasure only gets silenced by him effectively punching all air from my lungs with that one thrust.
“You think you can play games with me, little brat?” he growls, his lips skimming across the near-black stone on my collar peeking out atop my high-necked vest. “Time to teach you a lesson, then.”
He withdraws his cock, lifting me up to do so, then lets me drop again and thrusts up into me at the same moment.
Fuck! I nearly scream.
It’s jarring, especially when he does it again and again, but also so good. All I can do is bite down on my leather-covered arm to keep from howling until the entire citadel knows what he’s doing to me.
Faster and faster he goes until he’s positively bouncing me on his cock, pounding into me at a harsh and brutal pace. It’s all I can do to somehow be as quiet as I can when some late cadets hurry past our alcove, Xaden not slowing down in the slightest.
“Xaden…” I sob into his mind. Teasing him all day didn’t leave me unaffected either, and this rough fucking is just what I wanted, punishing yet so good, having me dangle on that edge in mere minutes. I knew it wouldn’t take long, but fuckthisissogooood.
In my head, I hear him laugh. “Nu-uh, little brat,” he croons, at odds with his cock pounding my insides and his mouth sucking a bruise against my neck. “Naughty girls don’t get to come on master’s cock.”
I whimper when he groans and pushes even deeper into me, cock twitching as his come spurts into me. I want to come, too, need it, and try to grind against him for that little bit of extra friction against my clit that’ll surely be enough to push me over the edge as well. But even during his climax, Xaden’s grip on my hips is firm, unyielding.
“Oh, please,” I whimper, forgetting to use our bond to speak, and Xaden growls.
“You brought this onto yourself,” he snarls into my head, and his tone vibrates through my entire body, making everything inside me tingle with lust. “Now, back to class. We’ll continue your punishment at a later time.” He pulls out and places my feet back onto the ground, his come leaking down my thighs.
His shadows retreat and I stare down at the mess he made of me. “How… how am I supposed to explain this when I need to get new trousers?”
“Not my problem,” he snarks, sounding almost amused as he walks back to the gym as if he’d only been to the bathroom. “But you should get a change of clothes before you head to the flying field. Even with your saddle, riding could be slightly uncomfortable like this.
“Oh,” he adds, “and no touching yourself. Not until I got the chance to properly punish you tonight.”
I follow him with dazed eyes, my core clenching around nothing. Fuck… this is going to be a looong day…
. o O o .
AN: I have a follow-up planned for this, because, obviously, they aren't done here. But I haven't written it yet, so no promises about when I can post it.

Talk Shop Tuesday: what's one literary device you think you overuse/use the most in your work? Why are you drawn to this one so much? And what's one that you would like to use more in your future work? Is there a reason you haven't used it as much as you would like? Thanks! <3 -@fieldsofview
Ooh interesting question! Maybe foreshadowing? I love dropping hints so much 😅 though I sometimes wonder if I telegraph too much. Maybe it just seems that way to me because I already know the answers. I love using it because I feel like every good twist needs some foreshadowing to hit just right—especially since imo the best twists are guessable. And also it's just plain fun—it feels like letting my readers in on a secret, but juuust enough to still be mysterious 😉
Hmm I'd love to use imagery more. I feel like I'm not a very descriptive writer—I'm more of a dialogue person, and even my descriptions lean more in the practical direction than scene-setting/visualization direction. Like...I can describe what my characters are doing and feeling, but sometimes it feels like my characters are talking inside a white room
(which I've heard is common for screenwriters, which is funny since I've never written a screenplay before 😅 though I've always sorta envied screenwriters for not having to do much scene-setting aside from just straight-up TELLING)
Still, it's something I wanna work on in my prose!
Ooh and I'd love to use more puns too. I find them delightful, I just struggle to make good ones 😅 or any ones
talk shop tuesday!

Strength of the Ancients
[BOTW!Link x F!Reader]
Prologue Part 2
[Previous Part] [Next Part]
Tumblr media
Little authors note! I forgot to mention in the last one that this will go along the course of the three games so the beginning will start off in Age or Calamity time! Then it’ll go onto the BOTW events and then with this new game, it’ll continue after that! I hope you enjoy!! Also to mention real quick, you are from the Sheikah Clan in this story, so like all the Sheikah, you have white hair! Everything else is up to you!
Tumblr media
That week passed quickly. Informing his sister was the hardest thing to do. Yet, despite how little she’d see her brother, Alona appeared to be rather accepting of the fact as long as they got to write to each other whenever they could. When the week came to a close, Banzetta and Link had set out to the castle like before with Alona to wait at home for their father’s return. The on coming change was dreaded.
Link remained nervous about starting training. He’s never raised a sword a day in his life. Would he be capable and strong enough to go through with this? Would he be able to fulfill these new expectations set for him?
“Relax, Link. You’ve got this,” Banzetta spoke in an attempt to help his son calm his nerves, yet his tensed posture as the two walked up to the castle gates already gave away his own feelings on the matter. Perhaps, with time, this can be relieved some. However, that would have to wait.
A few guards approached the two with two other figures. One was immediately recognized by Link and his father. He was the captain of the royal army, Captain Ulrich, who was always clad in shining armor that glittered in the sunlight. His helmet was off to allow proper greeting and further conversation. The man beside him was not one they knew— the only openly guessable characteristic was that he was from the Sheikah Clan due to his attire and his Snow White hair, a shared characteristic amongst all of the Sheikah. The Sheikah’s usual uniform was made to look like regular cloth, though the material was strong to serve as armor with the addition of thin and flexible armor underneath for extra protection and mobility— according to what his father had described to him one day.
“This is our young hero?” Ulrich spoke firmly as he looked down at the boy. Link tensed under his gaze, but straightened up properly. He wanted to make a good first impression after all.
“Yes, sir,” Banzetta placed a hand on his son’s shoulder and gently pushed Link forward. The boy moved with ease, looking up at the captain.
Ulrich looked at the boy entirely. Not really strong, yet not frail at all. Link was far from out of shape, at least. Mostly from working the farm, but also from being outside most of the time— whether it’s him playing with his sister or him exploring the area around the house alone.
Ulrich released a short hum from his throat in acknowledgment, “Very well. We’ll take him from here.” The captain looked at the blacksmith with a blank face. The man had always been known to be quite stoic, putting his duties above most. It’s part of why he was such a good captain; even if it was unnerving to some people.
The captain began to turn away and head back into the castle walls. Banzetta kneeled down to his son, placing both hands on his shoulders now. He spoke reassuringly, “I want you to understand how proud of you I am, Link. You’re a strong kid, and you’ll be an even stronger soldier.”
Link took in a deep breath and went to respond, but was cut off as Ulrich’s commanding voice struck his ears, “Come now. We have no time to waste.”
Banzetta looked past Link and nodded his response to the captain. He looked back at Link and patted his shoulders. “We’ll wait for your letters,” he muttered to the boy before coming to a stand.
Link only stood there for a moment longer before quickly making his way to the captain. Looking back, he watched as his father disappeared beyond the gates as they were shut behind the both of them. He was finally sealed off from what he was the most familiar with.
“Link,” The captain started, causing the blonde boy to whip his head back around to the front of him, “I’d like to introduce you to Mr. Kaigo here.” He held out a hand to gesture to the Sheikah clansman at his side. “You are to show him the equal amount of respect you’d show me. He will also be overseeing your training, and the training of another new soldier, along side me. Understand?”
“Yes, sir.”
The sound of wood clashing against wood began to grow louder as they neared the barracks. It was almost the only thing he could hear when they walked through the archway leading to the inside of it. There were many men in pairs who sparred with wooden swords for their practice. Using a real, metal sword would be too dangerous and a waste of good weapons. They’re usually saved for real battles. Occasionally, the sound of wood smacking metal would sound when a wooden sword would strike armor or a shield.
“You’ll be coming with me for the time being, Link,” Kaigo spoke in a calmer tone. It was a lot different than Ulrich’s strictness, Link noticed. That being said, that doesn’t mean he was easier to work with. He knew better than to judge a book by its cover like that.
Link jogged to catch up with Kaigo while Ulrich stayed behind. The sound of his booming voice filled the air as he began to correct a few “slackers” as he called them. The soldiers in training spoke a collective, “Sir, yes, sir!”
The place Kaigo directed Link to was a bit more secluded from the others. It was closed off with fewer training equipment around the area. An area for personal training, perhaps?
He noticed someone in the center of the area. It was a girl who held a wooden sword in her hands, constantly whacking a training dummy. The dummy was made to have the center spin with the same force used to hit the sticks on the side.
“Reflex training. It’s what you’ll start on when you finish the basics,” Kaigo spoke beside him, watching the girl swing and deflect attacks. Her movements were quick. Every second or so, the sound of wood clashing would sound. The girl was sweating from the effort, and probably time, she’s been using to go at this. Stands of her pure white hair stuck to her face because it.
“Look closely,” Kaigo said quietly. Link did as he was told, brows furrowing with concentration. Each movement taken to strike was similar, yet slightly different every so often. There was a reason to that though. Link noticed the slight sporadicalness of her movements.
“She’s… going too fast,” Link also said this quietly as to match Kaigo’s tone. Perhaps it was to not disturb her just yet.
Kaigo smiled at Link successful observation, “Yes, she is. That’s what she’s supposed to do.” Link looked at him with confusion.
“She’s supposed to be going too fast?” He muttered, looking up at the Sheikah clansmen now.
“That’s correct. Right now, she’s pushing her limits by going at such a speed. She’s barely landing the hits and dodging the counters— but that’s going to help her improve. In a real battle, it’s moves like that which can save your life.”
Link looked back at the girl with slight amazement after hearing the explanation. To be able to move that fast was an awe inducing sight to see. Will he be able to go that fast in the near future?
A sudden yelp that had followed a smack against… well, not wood. The girl had finally came to a stop with a hand risen to her jaw. A grimace was present on her face— as well as Link’s. She missed the final block and it ended up smacking her in the face.
Kaigo’s laughter filled the air, causing the girl to jump in surprise. Her cheeks flushed a soft shade of pink from embarrassment and her eyes were a bit widened to emphasize the surprise she felt in that moment. However, the surprise melted in an instant when she noticed the new company, now showing confusion.
“You almost had it, (Y/N)!” Kaigo called out as he calmed himself.

from @viridescent-lance
"Python! Happy birthday!" Forsyth bursts into Python's room without knocking. A common occurrence, though he's tried his best to temper it lest he intrude on something he'd like to unsee. Thankfully, Python is fully clothed and actually doing something productive, sharpening the whittling knife Forsyth had gifted him for his last birthday. It makes his heart swell a little. "I hope it's been a good one thus far. I apologize for being so late..."
Forsyth's been swamped with post-mission work, be it aftermath or catch-up. He's not one to shirk his work, but if he'd finished it a little more swiftly than normal, no one will be the wiser.
"I've come to deliver you your present, and perhaps to spend some time together?" The bottle of wine is very obvious in its shape even wrapped, but at least the archer's gloves aren't immediately guessable. Forsyth does feel a little forward, but this is something he wishes to do and he will allot himself this, especially on his partner's birthday!
"Looks like you've been popular today!" Gifts are strewn about the room, a dagger, several sets of arrows...and a beautiful, luxurious bouquet. Huh. Flowers? They're tucked away unceremoniously in the back of his room, but it's a fresh bouquet. Forsyth stifles a laugh at the thought of someone gifting Python flowers, of all things.
(Well, Forsyth did get him flowers, once, didn't he? These are exceedingly expensive, though, he can tell. And yet Python's thrown them in the back to be accidentally crushed later...)
"May I ask how you happened upon those flowers?" Forsyth picks them up carefully, making certain not to crush the blooms. They really are beautiful, and their colors seem almost perfectly aligned with Forsyth's armor, of all things.
To be quite honest, Python’s not used to his birthday being such an event. The majority of the gifts he’s received have been awkwardly deposited at his desk until he can determine where to store them. In the meantime, there’s a gift from last year to tend to. The knife that Forsyth had given him—he’d used it to carve through a bear, or at least he’d thought he had. Only the goddess knows what the hell he had actually been cutting into behind the veneer of Celephais’s illusions.
Whatever it was, it had still done a number on the blade. He scrapes it across a whetstone in an smooth, even rhythm—interrupted by the sharp staccato of his door being unceremoniously thrown open. "Crivens, Fors. You ever gonna learn how to knock?" He twists toward Forsyth in his chair with a sigh, knife still in hand. A glance is spared back toward the bouquet in question. "The flowers were from Caeda. She..." His eyes move back to Forsyth, and then to the shape of the gifts in his arms. One of them is difficult to discern, but the other is quite obvious. "...Awkward story, actually. I think I'd rather tell it over a glass of something, maybe." His eyebrows raise expectantly.

Fot the ask, I'm curious about "we will never be here again" (it's wonderful so far, absolutely love how you've structured this fic)
7. What inspired the idea for the plot? And 17. What was the hardest scene to write?
❤️❤️❤️
For this ask meme and we will never be here again
7. What inspired the idea for the plot?
Originally, I got the idea from an article about a woman who hitchhiked as a teenager in the 1960s and the methods she used to keep herself safe, although I can't find it anymore unfortunately. I've had the idea for this hitchhiker/driver AU for 2-3 years now. I actually started writing it as a supercorp fic around 2 years ago (although in a very different context and different plot) but couldn't make it work.
There is more in the background, particularly for Ava but I don't want to give away ALL the inspiration because spoilers (although I think it's guessable based on what's there already). I think that idea of the "free" hitch hiker who could go anywhere vs a traveller with a very set destination in mind is just an interesting one though, I'm excited to go further with it.
17. What was the hardest scene to write?
Without a doubt the argument they have at the beginning of the second chapter. Beatrice needed to move from being angry/shocked that Ava hid the money and gun from her to accepting it and letting Ava travel further with her. Moving her through those emotions believably was difficult (and maybe I didn't pull it off? I'm still not sure!)
Her decision to let Ava keep travelling with her also hinges on the fact that she's basically a kind and compassionate person, and I found that quite difficult to get across too. It's an interesting thing writing fanfiction where you kind of have this crutch in that everyone knows the characters and likes the characters - so we all know and accept that Beatrice is kind and good and absolutely would want to help someone she saw as being in trouble. But I don't want to just brush over that in the story because it doesn't feel quite as authentic and believable - it would be a pretty thin story if I just said "Beatrice decides to help because she's Beatrice and that's what she does", even if I think most people would be on board with that because we know and love Beatrice. I'm not sure if I did a convincing job of demonstrating Beatrice's kindness here, but that's what I was trying to do.

Bro, the original storyboard are still up. Chelsea being Nerissa was a last minute change , which is why the twist doesn't make much sense. If you watch directors interviews you'll find that they intended Chelsea to be a Regina George mean-girl. Also they describe the twist as fun lmao.
Look, I understand there are storyboards. I also understand that stories can change while they are in production. I'm not doubting the storyboards exist and that an initial draft of the movie at some point had them as two characters.
There are interviews where they discuss how the story was still open for input, so, you know, suggestions, changes, alterations, all that good work currently in production stuff, when the studio opened back up with the hybrid set up about half way through the development. Just because some of the storyboards in the beginning had something does not mean it will always be there in the final product. Things change. "You'll find they intended Chelsea to be a Regina George mean-girl" fine, but it obviously didn't stay that way. And, as I've said before, there is enough information in the movie for the reveal to be guessable. I'll say once again, I figured it out when "plan get the Trident" was suggested by Chelsea. I'm sorry if you feel it makes no sense, but like I've talked to multiple people that were able to predict the twist so idk what to tell you there.
But, I am also just dubious of how you guys keep pushing this whole "last minute" change thing. In the storyboards I saw, even as separate people, Chelsea is still evil and turning into a giant fucking mermaid to enact revenge. Other than the name of the character, and a portion of her motivation being that she was avenging her mom (with the whole other bit still being the whole "becoming ruler of the ocean and taking over everything" thing), the overall reason for the end fight is the same. Chelsea would have still been manipulating Ruby for that goal of getting the Trident, killing the krakens, and becoming Queen herself. The only thing that would really truly change with these storyboards is her age, so to me it sounds like this "it's a last minute storyboard change that makes no sense!" is some form of excuse/denial so that people feel alright to ship them again and write good end fix it fics.
Also to be a bit more snarky here...
If you watch the directors interviews, you'll find that they say that Ruby is a character "stuck between really strong women; amazingly strong women... and a lot of people have a lot of ideas about how she should be living her life, and this journey she goes on is figuring out how she wants to... because her heart's in the right place in every frame of the film; she has no ulterior motive, and she's so empathetic to her friends and everyone around her. I think that was really the sweet spot that we, working with the animators and with Lana - You know we love that you're doing that because that was really the goal in an idea about this coming of age story." Gee that kind of sounds like what I've been saying this movie is about; her relationship with these women. Multiple other interviews also put emphasis on the relationship between Ruby and her mom, Her mom and Grand Mama, Ruby and Grand Mama, Ruby and Chelsea. You know, the people I've mentioned in my other posts. It's clear that by the time production was wrapping up that this was the direction and intention of the movie.
To be fair I've also seen where they describe Chelsea as a Regina George type mean girl, and it really fits the high schooler vibe she has going on, but it's clear that not all of that stayed through till the end of production.
I can also imagine a version or original idea for this movie being one where the kraken family and the mermaid family were supposed to be foils of each other, but to be fully fleshed out we would have needed more world building and the plot would have had more focus on the war itself since that would have been the ideal point to sure how these two families diverged from each other. They would both have the starting point of the end of the war, and a broken relationship between mother and daughter (one because the mother was killed and the other because Agatha left). But from the multiple interviews I've seen where they wanted the focus of the movie to be on Ruby herself and how she interacts with the other women in her life during this coming of age story, that plot wouldn't do it justice. There is too much background information that you would have to supply to showcase both sides of the story and Ruby's personal journey would suffer for it.
When talking about production of the film, multiple interviews also talk about how they developed the feel for land/the town vs under the water, the humans vs the sea creature, and some of the actual character design elements like Nerissa's water hair. I haven't seen one where they talk about the lore of the war and how they fleshed out how the under the sea politics work and how those were a super important part of developing the story and production direction of the movie... At this point who knows how much of that they had ideas for, we would have to wait for more storyboards or an art book, but my point is that it isn't what they wanted the focus of the end product to be about.
Those storyboards were ultimately changed and by combining Chelsea with Nerissa and having her be an adult, it tightened up the core of the movie being Ruby and her relationships with women in her life (since one was no longer a peer). The story of Ruby growing into her own was able to have the sole spotlight rather than having to split it between two different family stories.
A lot of people who work on and promote things in interviews will describe it as fun. It is a very easy way to get across "I enjoy and approve of this thing we did". What do you want them to do? Break the flow of the interview and take up all the remaining time by explaining in exacting detail when and why the change happened during the development, and their exact thought process in doing it, and who exactly suggested it, and who supported it, and how much of the story that they had at that point in time of production was changed by it? Like I'll admit I'm curious to when it changed, but when I'm watching a 10-20 minute interview on YouTube I would rather they cover more than just one little thing.

do you know what the prompt form means by semi-anonymous? the note says it's still guessable in some places. when i submit a semi-anonymous prompt, can mods see who i am? how is it guessable and by whom? i have prompts i want to submit but they're kind of embarrassing so i wonder if i have time to wait on an invite from a sock account or something LOL
The official AO3 info on anonymous prompts is: "Please note that the anonymous feature is not totally secure. Users may still be able to guess each other's identities by the prompts they create."
This means:
Either there is something in the prompt itself that gives it away (e.g. phrasing, or known DNWs or preferences).
Or someone guesses it by comparing the list of users signed up for the event (those are mentioned on the collection profile) with the list of prompts. Theoretically, someone could take the time to check who signed up and then check if there are any signed-up users that do not have any prompts, and then deduce that they must have submitted their prompts anonymously. However, you can set the "anonymous" feature separately for each prompt, so, for example, if you submit 3 prompts under your user name and 2 anonymously, you won't be easy to guess. A sleuth might be able to narrow down the list of possible anonymous prompters, but it won't be easy nor unambiguous. We do like to think/hope that people prefer to spend their time on creating instead of pointless sleuthing, though. :-))
Mods can find out more easily as we can download a spreadsheet with all users and prompts, but let me tell you: we really do not care (unless your prompt violates any AO3 rules or has anything malicious in it). As long as the prompt is within the scope of the event (K/S or K&S), it's all fine.
If it makes you feel more comfortable, you are free to use a "sock" account, but trust us: we've all submitted our fair share of wild and whacky or embarrassing prompts to various challenges. We don't judge or kink-shame. We applaud our anonymous prompters and encourage all "embarrassing" prompt submissions!

Which is your favorite act of each circus skill Cirque du Soleil has ever included? Favorite trapeze act, favorite silks act, dance, icarian games, miscellaneous, etc.
Sweet you menace. You knew this would both delight me and derail my day. I am powerless but to respond.
(Disclaimer that categorizing and even identifying all circus acts is both impossible and a credit to the medium itself, this is neither a comprehensive list of acts nor a comprehensive list of my favorites, etc. etc.)
Adagio/acro/hand to hand - Adagio Quatuor, Luzia
Sensual, emotional, graceful expression of conflict, perfect set, perfect song, perfect voice. Check out 3:50-4:13 for what I personally think is the best moment in the entire show. Can't explain it. It just gives me chills every time.
Aerial hoop - Cerceaux, O
There is a lot of great lyra acts in Cirque, some with markedly stronger overall choreography and difficulty level, but this song in this setting, when the brides come in... this one is unmatched.
Aerial straps - Tlaloc, Luzia
Cirque is utterly oversaturated with aerial straps acts. But this one is real magic.
(like a billion more beneath the cut)
Balance - Rola bola, Kurios
How is there no decent video on hand?? Anyway this act is a heart attack no matter how many times you see it.
Banquine - Banquine, Quidam
You already know there's no other. 1:44 if you want goosebumps. The ghost twins are handled with such tender delicacy, and yet they're both totally hollow and interchangeable. Absolutely incredible.
Bars of any kind (Russian, uneven, tournik, high, etc.) - Uneven bars, Amaluna
Very nearly tournik here, but I just love the Amazons so much and feel like this entire show was shafted so I'm sticking with it.
Bungee - Bungees, Zed
There is basically no linkable footage of this act anywhere but it wins because of the set and song. And they're galaxies!!!
Contortion - Contortion, Kurios
Wish I could find decent footage of it onstage because it looks so cool with its proper base and setting. But I just love how energetic this act is, and the skill level is nuts.
Cradle (Russian, aerial, other, etc.) - Bateau, O
Aerial cradle meets parallel bars meets sheer genius.
Dance - Dance Interlude, La Nouba
This was very nearly Dei Ex Machina from Mystere because I'm obsessed with the new Monarch bird, but. There's a chance nothing else in the world matters besides this song.
Diabolo - Diabolo, Kooza
Who's doing it higher, faster, and better than this tbh. Plus his costume is just adorable.
Fire - Fire Knife Dance, Alegria IANL
This artist in particular takes the cake. You can feel his passion and joy. A perfect match for this act and show.
Flying trapeze - Flying trapeze, Mystere
It's categorically the best flying act in the entire world. Really nothing more to it. I've trained with a few people in the act too, so it has a very special place in my heart. 1:33 for an uprise that gives me a heart attack every. fucking. time.
Handbalancing - Handbalancing on canes, Varekai
This act lends itself very beautifully to different moods. I'm particularly fond of this chilly interpretation - La Promise is so mature here, so in control of herself and her surroundings.
Interlude - Dans L'Air, Quidam
Probably guessable. I never shut up about this one. Favorite moment in all of my Cirque experience. There is nothing like those lights coming up bright and hot as the red curtains stretch out, not before not since.
Juggling - Juggling, Amaluna
Love Cali, love Viktor Kee. No one on earth moves like him.
Non-juggling manipulation - Batons, Ka
Misc. aerial - Cloud swing, Quidam
Favorite Cirque act of all time. All time ever. I don't imagine anyone is clicking through all of these but if anyone chose just one, I'd want it to be this. The women with their ropes. Boum Boum trapped beneath the net. The bassist. The fact that Cirque hasn't touched this act once since it was retired in Quidam. Everything about it is perfection.
Misc. other things that swing - Swiss rings, Volta
I'll never forget seeing this live. A real shining jewel in a show that never got to become what it could have been.
Non-juggling manipulation (hoops, batons, ribbons, etc.) - Batons, Ka
Duhhhhh 😁
Russian swing - Russian swing, O
What really makes this act are the tiny interactions between artists. Everyone has a story and a reason to celebrate. The Russian swing itself becomes almost secondary to the setting it creates. Perfect example of a successful ensemble act.
Silks - Aerial contortion in silks, Quidam
Again, are there any others? This act is simply vicious.
Static trapeze - Triple trapeze, Varekai
Again, duhhh 😁. I wanted to be one of them so badly when I was younger.
Teeterboard - Korean plank, Mystere
Kind of a cheat because it's also powertrack but come on this act rules.
Trampoline (wall, power track, etc.) - Powertrack, La Nouba
Utterly devastating in its effectiveness. I truly do not care that today's powertrack acts are a million times more complex or high in skill level. This is precision and simplicity at its finest, and every dash of characterization shows the magic crammed into every moment of La Nouba. So many modern shows have never and could never in their wildest dreams. Lose my shit at 6:50.
Unicycle - Unicycles, Drawn To Life
No real footage because Disney is the worst. I don't even like unicycles and I adored this act.
Wheel (cyr, German, crossed, etc.) - Roue cyr, Corteo
Yet again it's that act/song combo that does me in. The precision this act demands! The bizarre darkness of the entire thing! I'm just obsessed.
Wheel of death - Wheel of death, Kooza
No one else should even try tbh. Even Ka can't match the energy, and the intimacy of the big top takes this act to the absolute maximum.
Wire - Tightwire, Amaluna
I don't really care for wire acts too much but I really liked this one! I was bummed when it was removed. It lent shape to the world in a really nice way.

FRIENDS HELP ME OUT (don’t worry it’s not a big deal). Can you guy please Honestly tell me around what level of japanese you knew when you became able to learn a decent amount of new words from consuming some japanese content without looking up words?
By this I mean you could of course have learned even more new words if you’d looked unknown words up. But even if you looked up no words at all, you understood enough of the main idea to guess the meaning of a decent amount of unknown words you saw. For japanese, I mean just guess the meaning of a new word - since for the kanji words if you had no audio or furigana the pronunciation may not have been guessable, but meaning might be. And by all this I mean not that you could do this with every single media, but you could start to do it with Some media: for example a simple manga or a particular show or video game.
---
Example. I’m probably only N4ish, and can’t pass an N5 test because my vocabulary is all over the place. I know around 2000+ words and have read a grammar guide on everything up to N3 and a bit beyond. I am by no means N2 or N1 (which I’d consider similar to B1 or B2, which is when I would expect learning words only from immersion WITHOUT word lookup works perfectly fine).
If I open up Hikaru No Go, on the first page I see:
Tumblr media
Dore - I know that word, mo ?, kore mo - this also, batto - bat?, shinainaa - shinai - if shimasu/suru is do then ‘not do’/’won’t do’ and naa? is probably just a way of saying it. - Maybe he’s saying “where is [it?] And this bat won’t do aahh” So he’s looking for something. I got the main idea, though I could be confused about doremo.
Actual translation from english manga: Hmm, its all junk.
Tumblr media
ne - attitude sound. Mou - already, deyou - lets go out? (you for suggestion, de for leave?), Hikaru - boys name. kimi based on the hanzi i know I’m going to guess means atmosphere, warui - bad, so she’s saying “Lets go out Hikaru, this place has a bad vibe”
{oops I missed this bubble}
o - oh!?, kore nan ka - what is this, iinjanai ka - i’m going to guess this means “is this something good?” as iin - good, janai - not good. So he’s saying “oh?! This might be something good?”
Actual translation from english manga: Let’s get out of here Hikaru, I’m getting the creeps. / Oh, c’mon Akari, stop complaining/ Wooh, I found something!
So it looks like I grasped the main idea okay without grabbing a dictionary, despite not having N2 level japanese. So this material would be one I could learn new words from with context potentially, even if I looked no words up.
--
For you, what was the threshold with either particular materials like a manga, or overall, for you to start being able to learn a decent number of words from context?
For example your threshold is when you understand the main idea, or when you understand the main idea and 70% of details, etc? Or when you were N2 novels in slice of life settings became something you could guess (meaning of) new words only from context when you wanted?
When I looked at the reddit forms people generally were answering at N2 or N1 level or never. I think the Reddit LearnJapanese users skew toward people who prefer to look up every unknown word though, who like to use anki for quicker memoriziation of new words, and who have low tolerance for ambiguity.
(Tolerance for ambiguity is how much you can tolerate engaging with media you don’t fully understand - most people can comfortably engage with material they comprehend 98% and that’s most media you consume in your native language, then many people can tolerate material they comprehend 95% of, and some people can tolerate material they comprehend 90% of. Below 90% most people feel ‘reading pain’ or drained if trying to read/watch something, and often material comprehended under 95% is used for intensive reading (or intensive watching) where everything unknown is looked up and the material is engaged with for a shorter period of time. This is true in your native language too when you learn to read in literature class - you get short excerpts in your textbook with lots of unknown words with definitions, and reading assignments of books are often books assumed to be 95% comprehensible for your class’s reading level.)
There are some ways to improve ‘comprehension’ without actually knowing 95% of words on the page. If you know english, and read a French technical paper on a psychology topic you are already familiar with? You will 1. already know background information about the topic so information in the article won’t be new to you, 2. you can rely on the shared latin-based cognates in scientific words to understand a large portion of the words, then rely on shared english-french cognates to understand another portion of the words (an english speaker can guess marcher has to do with moving - sounds like march, an english speaker can guess someil has to do with sleep). A person already familiar with recognizing grammar patterns or who already studied very basic french will recognize ‘la/le/les’ in front of nouns, will recognize the verbs by word endings, if a sentence is saying something positive or negative (n’ pas), and recognize the adjectives. So they will be able to focus on the necessary words for the main idea - usually the verb of what’s going on, the subject and object, and if any meaning is negated. From all that, there’s a good chance an A2 learner could read this psychology article and understand it well. I should know lol, I read a ton of science articles on wikipedia as an A1 and A2 learner in french because the materials were much easier to read even though I only had studied like 1000 words. This is also a benefit when reading spanish - I’ve only studied maybe 500 words of spanish and the A1 basics, but I have a book about linguistics in spanish so it uses a lot of technical language and I can read and use it for reference just fine. But a spanish novel? I have no idea what’s going on, I don’t have enough context from surrounding information OR vocabulary (since I have almost no spanish vocab I know).
So like... you can say count 80% of the words on a page and know that many, but also depending on the content you may have additional resources providing more tools to comprehend it up to 95%. As I mentioned, if it’s French you can lean on english and latin cognates to comprehend more words than you’ve actually learned. With japanese, I can rely on my hanzi knowledge to make a bit more guesses about some word meanings than I could without hanzi knowledge. You can use your understanding of grammar to identify subject, object, tense, positive/negative, descriptions, verbs, time period, place. And if you already are familiar with the topic - like its a show, movie, book, you already experienced in a language you know - then you can use your memory of the content to help guess what the unknown words mean. If you are willing to tolerate ambiguity of knowing less than 95% of the words, and willing to use all surrounding context you have available (like reading a plot summary beforehand or watching something in english first, or looking for cognates and grammar clues) then you can sometimes handle engaging with stuff you know less than 95% of.
@a-whump-muffin from talks we had I’m guessing you started learning some stuff from context only, when you were watching shows in Japanese around N3? I know you said you watched with english subs sometimes (so I guess the english translation helped you figure out the meaning of new words). But eventually you were also just watching in japanese and able to pick up new words.

I sent you a Submission on season two Kacy would like to sees if you want to enjoy it and make any comments. I love how this series flips so many stereotypes with characters! It's still a very guessable procedure show but the characters are keeping me here for their stuff - it reminds me of early OG NCIS with Ziva in the pack. :)
Hi! This ask is actually useful - helps me answer your submission here. But maybe next time you could just... send a long ask 😅
@shoes--off 's help was instrumental here
Here we go:
I'm keeping this to season two only because I definitely want more seasons (give us at least 10 like the other parts of the franchise please) but I don't want to overload your box with every hope to ever see on the series ha.
Kate Section
1. More Character Interactions
We all love Kacy, but Kate is her own person too so I'd love to see how she gets on with more than just her main three of Lucy, Ernie, and Jane! Does she get along with the boys when it's just them? Is it both or just one?! They could easily do a Kai-Kate surf moment (or them post surfing to not endanger the talent) since we know she's a surfer now. She and Jesse both love "by the book" approaches to start cases so might they bond over that; are they a powerhouse when it comes to tactically executing a case?!
And of course there's the desire to see Kate with the tiny Tennants - for me with Julie especially...is Kate maybe the one who's not scared of Julie and so she'll eat a burger around her? Ha! Would Julie allow it because "Kate is awesome!"? Lucy has the Boone kids, let the Tennants be Kate's kid crew. :)
Yes I so want more team interactions for Kate
2. Personal History
I don't think season 2 is the time to kick off a Noah plot, that's more a S3 or S4 thing to me (either confirm he was killed because of bad Intel handling or say it's because their mom is CIA and he was killed to get at her and the others killed with him were to cover up his target status), but I'd definitely love to see them talk a little more on him given he's death has such an impact on Kate! Is the Kate we see always who she was growing up or did Noah's death alone turn her into the strict "mean Whistler" we saw in season one? What's her relationship like with her parents? Is she a giant nerd (yes) and if so is she into video games or movie nerdom topics? Maybe both! Does she own that condo or is it a rental and now that she's serious with Lucy we see them either moving in together or finding a place of their own? Again she doesn't have to have her own season arc just yet but I would love to see some set up in the next season!
I really want to know more about Kate's backstory too
3. Emotional Expressions
Tori's face makes adorable looks so please to more Kate expressing her emotions; let's see humorous Kate, mean Whistler, sad puppy Kate, plotting agent face Kate...rage so much she breaks office keyboards Kate!
Lucy Section
1. Tiny powerhouse continues
I just love SO much the most bad*ss fighter on the team can only reach most people's waist area, ha. :) Please have Lucy jump over things more writers and stay on people like an angry chihuahua until they're in cuffs!
2. Personal History
We know she's good at poker, enjoys researching fashion, and she use to be on cheer squad but I want to see more on our little parkour field agent. Is Lucy a pie or cake person? Is she distant with all members of her family or just some? Is it because of who she likes (women) or because of other reasons such as she just doesn't want the jobs they do and they think she's acting superior to them?! I feel like given the family business a member of Lucy's family is perfectly set up to either be a suspect in a crime or at least a lead and we see how she handles that. Ooh, what if because of conflict issues Lucy can't question them but Kate can and so she asks Lucy how she wants her to handle it? It's couple stuff while also focusing on Lucy's emotions in the moment! If not part of a one episode story this could be something for season 3 because she's the only one besides Kate whom we haven't seen family for, well and Ernie.
I really really really want to meet Lucy's family
3. Money
They've kind of touched on it some and we know Lucy has money but how does this effect her dynamic with it? Would she think nothing of buying Kate a $1,500 surfboard if hers got broke or lending Jesse $5,000 for something he needs; how would the person on the receiving end feel? Would it depend on how often this behavior happens? It's possible given how much money she has access to Lucy doesn't have to technically work a day in her life so what made her choose NCIS versus being a cheerleading coach or something safer? Money is not all there is to her of course but I just feel money subconsciously or not plays more of a part in Lucy's life than she wants to admit at times.
Kacy Section
I VERY much agree with you in that I want to see Kacy have drama happen to them without them being the drama. It sounds like the show writers are on the same page as well thankfully. Kacy is still going to be involved with drama thing but it won't break them up unless something major gets revealed during writing; they are the romance for the show. :)
1. Job Power Dynamics
As DIA Whistler did have it over them on giving out information or not, but being FBI will we see that change? Are they both equals now given their job titles or is one over the other in the government hierarchy? If so, who and how do they handle that? I feel Lucy would use the whole "but you're my girlfriend" approach more than Kate would as Kate is very into rules and organization for work. So yeah can they work together in the field really? Both times we've seen so far Kate was worried about Lucy being her friend at least so she seemed like a complete novice at her job allowing Lucy to lead during the computer hacker thing and then Lucy let the assassin go in favor of taking care of Kate when she easily could have pursued her. If they're both chasing a suspect and Lucy gets punched and goes down does Kate keep chasing the bad guy to catch them and if so how does Lucy feel about that afterwards? They very much want to explore them as a pair it seems so yeah give us situations which answer "how are you together". Is Lucy understanding? Mad? Both?! And does that show how she's more the emotional one compared to Kate's professional personality where she as a girlfriend feels guilty for it but also Kate as a person is very much "the greater good first"?
Nice questions
2. Jealous Lucy
Give me some suspect or potential victim hitting on Kate/attaching to Kate because they feel hitting on her will get them what they want/they want to date her after they're safe. Or Jane uses Whistler to pull in a suspect because Kate is physically someone's type. Puppy Kate is of course 100% faithful to Lucy and may not even notice the flirting, but Lucy knows what's up and does not approve which equals humor for an episode. Not everything has to show how they handle struggles in the relationship. :)
Give me Katalina
3. Relationship Exemptions
Can we please get a moment where we hear they have discussed job related issues and so Lucy isn't going to call Kate a liar the moment she hides work things from her?! It is both illegal and illogical that Kate would tell Lucy every detail of a job she wants to know just because she's her girlfriend so I want to know that Lucy knows and accepts there times Kate has to lie to her. It's just personal matters where if she keeps things it will be trouble between them. Kate is a character built to do some shady stuff if the situations are right so I don't want them to break up ever just over lies that aren't personal; also Lucy knows Kate is big on protecting information because of what happened with Noah so if she faulted her it would be like Lucy is ignore actively that history and that's not fair because Noah's death was a huge impact on Kate.
4. Letting them be them
Let's grow Kacy as a pair some more before anyone (Ernie) goes asking about proposals or what they'd name their future kids! I'm so tired of shows jumping to marriage and kids the moment a pair gets together instead of just letting them be happy together for a season! You want to talk kids - go harass Kai about the girls he's dating and his future, we don't see men being asked when they're going to have kids so flip that script. You want to talk marriage things - Jesse is married and Jane and Ernie both were; yes Kacy can weigh in at times to tease how they might feel on topics but I don't need to see a full conversation yet on the topic from them (save that for season 5 for when they'll probably be fiancées by then).
Oh yeah no marriage talk in s2 pls
5. Fluff
All the fluff and in various forms please and thank you! :)
Give me Kate showing her "nerdy" side by knowing various video game characters the others might not or swing dancing with Ernie because he needs a partner and Lucy looks on lovingly. Give me them cuddled on a couch discussing the day - you can do a poof sound effect if one has a realization on a season long arc for the drama. Give me piggyback Kacy before Lucy almost chokes Kate via an armbar death grip to avoid water because Kate got too close to the ocean for Lucy's liking during a team beach day!
Non-Kacy requests (because it's needed)...
Can we please see Jesse's wife in season two? I will take a photo on his desk to start! Ha. It would be nice to physically see her at Jane's parties once also but I'll take a photo to start. :) More Jane action scenes because Vanessa kills those especially when moves are involved to have it be cinematic versus just simple punching or kicking. Kai in glasses...I have my reasons...the reason is Alex is hot in them!

Tiptoeing to a new brand and returning to something very familiar:
Beat Cafe by Jusbox - well, this is another perfume that seems to be fancy-bar-themed and it works pretty well, even if I personally don't really feel any alcohol - for me it's mostly leather and pretty decent tobacco with more leather at the start and more tobacco at the dry-out. A nice thing.
Micro Love by Jusbox - very very fresh fragrance which does indeed mostly smell with "ozonic notes", at the start it has more of a promise of a crisp sour apple than anything and at the end there's definitely some sage, but it remains fresh all the way through.
Siren & Sailors by Jusbox - this one has the most sillage of all of these (at least this is what my room smells like) and it's pretty interesting, because sure - there are definitely roses, especially at the top, but there's definitely some very fruity alcohol, which after some investigation (in father's liquor cabinet) was indeed identified as whiskey. The whole thing is very sweet and potent but definitely enjoyable.
Spring Dance by Jusbox - simple but good - fresh citrussy white flowers (namely jasmine) becoming very sweet white flowers (I'm not sure why, maybe it's amber, maybe it's honeysuckle, which I don't know how it's supposed to smell).
Feel 'N' Chill by Jusbox - another fresh one, but in a different way - a lot of fig leaves (and they don't leave us the whole time, as far as I can tell) with some watermelon for liquidness and maybe some guessable cardamom. Very nice.
Good Morning by Jusbox - still fresh and again different because this seems to be more classic aquatic fragrance - a lot of sea water (with no unpleasant aspects of it) and some very natural tangerines (mandarin oranges? is there a difference?). Seems like a fancy version of my favourite New York Eleven.
Ambre Eau de Parfum by Molinard - returning to this one and I have no clue how it managed to bamboozle me into thinking it's cold and salty the last time I tried it because it's literally neither of those thins - it's warm and sweet, very much hello benzoin and spices and pretty similar to Shalimar (or at least the bottom of its pyramid) and Explore All That is Around You. From which you could have guessed that I liked it and that one Molinard's travel sets.

5 Reasons Roman Is Infuriating (And Why I DO NOT have a crush on him)
Chapter 5: To A Land Of Our Imagination
Read on AO3
Chapter 1
Word count: 3471
Tw: Wounds, food, swearing
~~~
Logan planned the second date two days after the first. A picnic in the imagination, that Roman insisted on helping out with.
It took them quite a while to prepare everything. A red gingham print blanket in a field of many flowers on a hill, the sight of a rather giant disney-inspired castle in the far distance, mountains enveloping the horizons; very picturesque, certainly. He even offered to set up an orchestra off the side for them, but Logan declined. Logan was worried that they would get sunburnt due to the realistic touch that he brings, but Roman insisted that wouldn’t happen. And then Logan insisted that he didn’t know that it wouldn’t.
The banter was probably what took the longest time. It started with the back and forth about the likelihood of a sunburn, and then whether Thomas would typically tan or burn, and then it spiralled into nothingness. Obviously Roman made zero sense, but Logan was still determined to prove his point.
“No, Thomas should not get a surgical beauty mark. It’s pointless and expensive when you could have the same results with the smallest amounts of makeup.”
“But it adds character! All of the glamor girls have beauty marks! And besides, why put in the effort of putting on the beauty mark every day when you can just wake up that way?” Roman rebuttals, and Logan cannot begin to express just how stupid that argument is.
“A few seconds of a makeup pencil and maybe some powder isn’t that much effort. What would be an effort is spending a ridiculous sum of money on something he might regret and want gone. It would be a waste of resources for something thought of on a whim. That money would also go into the beauty industry, the industry that profits off of one’s self-hatred.” He argues, because yes, in a world where hating oneself is so common and so profitable, the most rebellious thing one can do is to learn to love themself.
“Makeup is also a part of the beauty industry.”
“It’s nowhere near as harmful and expensive though. It’s not just about insecurities, but also accentuating features that you enjoy in yourself. It also happens to be an art form, so I’m surprised that you’d even try that useless fact.”
Roman huffs. He’s probably not that interested in the beauty mark, but sometimes impulse can make you do stupid things. He does however look upset, and Logan hesitates.
“You know what you can do with makeup?” Logan asks, and they look at each other.
“What?” He asks, still pouting.
“Make many beauty marks. And change their locations when you feel like it.” He offers, and Roman lights up like that very dangerous chemical reaction Remus and himself attempted on bonding day.
“By the fourth musketeer, you’re right!” Roman touches his own face, lost in thought. “You could switch it up daily!”
It took a while longer for him to acknowledge what they were supposed to be doing, and then they were touching up the flowers (which is when Logan notices Bells of Ireland, sticking out amongst the other flowers, and assisting in integrating them into the green fields, like the flowers just popped up amongst nature. He believes Roman had summoned them around for him, and he can’t help but smile.) and then heading to the exit so Logan could get the ‘object of his affections’.
“Are you going to be in the imagination?” Logan asks him.
“Well, duh. I’ll obviously be out of earshot, but duty calls, and I have quests to attend to! Can’t have a realm without it’s heroes, right?”
“I guess not.” Logan nods. Roman’s going to play immersive make-belief then. Very well. That does usually help with Thomas’s motivation. Logan thinks of asking to join him sometime, and then decides that would most likely end horribly. Maybe Dungeons & Dragons would be a better solution.
He leaves Roman at the doorway, going to retrieve Patton. It isn’t very hard; he finds him in the living room holding a picnic basket and smiling brightly.
“That really, isn’t necessary.” He points to the basket. “We have food at the location.”
“What’s a little more? Besides, I have a little surprise to help with the planning.” He leans in and fake whispers.
Logan blinks. “A planner?”
“No, even better. But don’t guess. You know your old Patton-ership Person can’t keep a secret for very long.”
Logan groans at the pun, and they head back through Roman’s door to the imagination. It isn’t long before they reach the flowery hills (Logan wanted it to be accessible, to avoid an awkwardly long walk), and he sits down on the large blanket. Patton coos at the view, and the enchanting flower fields.
“Is Roman here?” He asks, looking around. He sets the basket down.
“He said he wouldn’t be nearby, and I trust his word, but he is in the imagination.”
Patton lets out a sigh in relief and sits down. “Okay. I just know he’d be mad if he found out, buuut…” He opens the petite basket’s lid, and like the objects from Mary Poppins bag sprouts Janus, arms held out dramatically.
“What is up losers? I’m here to foil all of your plans.” He lightly steps out of the basket, and plops down so they’re all facing each other in a triangle. “By making them better. You’ll thank me later.”
Although Logan is surprised, he isn’t really bothered. He’s quite similar to Roman in the theatrics, so perhaps he’ll prove to add ideas that would give life and a charming flair to his own.
“Very well.” Logan pulls out a notepad from god-knows-where. “Welcome to the ‘date’.” He does quotation marks with his fingers, and Patton leans excitedly to Janus.
“I think that’s what we’re calling it now. ‘Date’, but you have to do the thing with your fingers.” He does the finger quotations.
“What a lame concept. I love it.” Janus smiles. “I’m absolutely dreading spectating this ‘date’.” He does the finger quotations, and adds a little more emphasis on the word. At least he seems to be having fun.
“So. First step: The goal.”
“Find out if Roman really does have legs.” Janus answers at the same time Patton exclaims “Marry a pretty prince!”
“That was not supposed to be a guessable statement. And both of you are wrong. Patton, we do not have legal documents and cannot legally marry. The goal is to ‘woo’ Roman.”
“There may be or may not be a very easy solution for this.” Janus suggests, lounging back and checking his nails despite his gloves.
“What would be that solution?” Logan narrows his eyes at him.
“Oh I don’t know… Tell him how you feel.” He looks at him face-on, dead-serious.
“But… He most likely does not feel the same way. Besides, he wouldn’t like something so… Insignificant. He’s embodied himself after a prince, for Newton’s sake.” Logan argues, heart clutching painfully (metaphorically, obviously. If someone’s heart clutches painfully in real life, he recommends they go to a doctor and get it checked), and looking off into the distance, calculating the odds of rejection. He so far has not detected any signs or repercussions in the romance, and with Roman’s celebrity crushes being people like Adam Driver and Orville Peck, how is he supposed to compare? He can make a schedule planner less important than a social engagement.
“Oh come on, cheer up champ! I’m sure he’ll love it no matter what you do!” Patton encourages, giving him thumbs up. Logan looks at him, unimpressed.
“But will he really? These… Unnecessary feelings have rendered me even less functioning around him, so psychologically speaking, I’ve been even less perfect around him. He lives off the idea of a perfect, film-like life. Disney prince… Disney Relationship, Disney prince partner. Why would he like me? I look like a teacher.” As Logan continues his rant, now up and pacing, Janus shoots Patton a knowing look, and Patton eventually looks at him with an unknowing look.
“What?” Patton asks quietly, as Logan rambles.
“You don’t know?” Janus looks surprised.
“Know what?”
“Roman hasn’t told you about… You know…”
Patton looks at him, attempting to decipher what he means. Eventually, he quizzically does a limp wrist.
“No!” Janus whisper-shouts, exasperated. “Of course he’s gay. I’m talking about something else.”
“I’m lost.” He admits.
Janus leans in and whispers into his ear.
“Oh yeah! He has.” Patton gives him a thumbs up.
“I need a new style!” Logan turns and points at them, and they both display their shock easily.
“Dear god no. You’d look more out of place than Remus during the cosplay phase.” Janus jerks back, appalled. (Besting Remus in being out of place while he was in Thomas’s cosplay phase is nothing to roll your eyes at. Stripper Kermit is only one of many horrendous ideas that Janus has had the pleasure of being scarred by.)
“But think about it. You often see someone in a new light when they go through a big style change, whether they’ve changed as a person or not. When we altered our outfits for the first time, it was like a fresh new start. We were new, and more impressive models of our past selves of just three seconds before.”
“I see your point kiddo, but that just isn’t you! It’ll work against you in the long run if you try to be someone that you’re not.”
“Agreed. Seriously. Not to mention you’d be boring no matter what you wear; might as well be more comfortable doing it.”
Logan considers it. He nods, and sits down. “Alright. Thank you for your encouragement. I’m still not going to tell him outright.”
Patton raises his hand. “I have an idea.”
“Alright, hit us.” Janus looks at him.
“If you are to hit us, do it gently please. And preferably on the arm. I quite like these glasses.” Logan nods, accepting his fate.
“It’s an expression.” Janus side-eyes him, and gestures for Patton to start.
“How about… We leave the idea of telling him directly as an option, but also make a plan? That way, you have many options to pick from!” He encourages, looking like a parent bargaining with their toddler.
“That wouldn't be unreasonable.” Logan takes out a pen, and clicks it on. “Now, why don’t we start?”
By the time they leave the imagination, Logan has notes full of ideas. It’s a little bit difficult to have the best brainstorms without a literal embodiment of creativity, but both of them are bad ideas to invite for different reasons, and not being in charge of creativity doesn’t stop the rest of them from coming up with creative thoughts. (If that were the case, the same concept could be applied to himself, and it would have probably killed him by now if he were the only one with an ounce of logic.)
He steps into Roman’s room. Nice as always, if not looking slightly blank. Maybe he’s just used to the disorder now.
He rips out a separate paper, and leaves it on Roman’s cluttered desk, to notify him in the future that he is no longer in his realm. He catches a glimpse of other papers on his desk, and is that-
“Poetry?” Obviously, Logan does not want to disrespect his privacy, but he does read the line he has seen. It was quite good. It seemed to be about jealousy, but he’s not the best at deciphering emotions, so he isn’t completely sure. He also catches a few typos.
He stands straight again, paces a little bit and just as he's about to sink out, he hears the imagination door open.
Roman stumbles in, heaving and drenched in sweat. He looks dull and lifeless, until he looks at Logan. It’s like a switch goes off, and he looks like his usual self again.
“Heading out?”
“That’s right. The date just ended.”
“That’s wonderful! How did it go?” He asks, strutting over, trying hard but failing to hide a limp.
“Are you alright?” Logan looks at him, and the standard first aid courses that Thomas has taken in his lifetime start kicking in.
"I'm-" And a poorly concealed wince. "Okay. Just a scrape from the dragon witch. Nothing a happy pappy prince can't handle."
"That's not something you usually say." Logan squints at him, taking a step closer. "Did you hit your head? You're starting to sound like Patton. I'm not leaving here until you let me help you."
"Ugh, fine." He flails out his arms, and then jerks them back in pain. "But seriously, how did it go?"
"It went well. Thank you for the Irish bells. We discussed things that one would do in a romantic setting, and then we dispersed. There will be another date fairly soon. I just stayed to drop off a note on your desk to inform you of our departure."
His eyes go wide. "My desk? Did you read any of my writing?" He asks, sounding panicked, with a hint of defensive nature.
"I did, actually. Not on purpose, I'm sorry. It was a poem that I believe is about jealousy. I read the third paragraph. It was quite well done." Logan bashfully admits.
"Oh. Thank you." He offers a small smile.
Logan suddenly remembers the wounds. "Now. Let's get to fixing you up. Do you have any cuts? Scrapes? Open wounds?" As he sits Roman down and checks over his injuries, he can't help but hurt a little bit on the inside. Roman's self preservation seems to have left him a long time ago, and he always gets reckless. He can't seem to let anyone see his weakness, and that's perhaps what he and Logan have most in common; although, Logan hasn't been injured physically in quite a while.
He finds a first aid kit (in Roman's nightstand. How concerning.) and helps patch up his wounds. Thankfully, Roman wasn't fully lying, as his injuries mainly consisted of bruises and mild cuts, but Logan made sure to take care of them all the same.
"I just realized." Roman whispers, eyes closed as Logan puts a band-aid on his arm.
"That's a new concept."
Roman ignores that. "You've done so much for me over the last while. To be fair, you always do things for me, but this week... Teaching me how to bake, leaving out cookies for me, which were heavenly by the way, thank you, helping with nail polish even though it was on your bed, this... It's quite a lot. I feel like I haven't done enough for you."
"Oh come on, don't metaphorically sell yourself short. This whole time, you've helped me set up my dates with Patton. Many of them, in fact. I had been nervous to tell him, and you helped me the whole way along. I am quite grateful for your contributions, Roman." Logan chuckles a little bit, because although expressing your gratitude for something that you don't care about may seem pointless, Roman still put in all of the effort. He did the planning, the setup and design, and wherever he was needed, he'd be. Logan had heard that he even managed to convince Remus to keep the funky business away from the 'dates'. That's quite a lot of work, and Logan appreciates every second of it.
"Nooo but that isn't enough! I want to take you somewhere special to thank you."
"Really Roman, that isn't necessary-"
"Thomas!" Roman screams into his ceiling. "You know how you're free in three weekends!? Yeah, well you're going to a planetarium now! Bring friends so you don't look like a loser." And sure enough, he can feel that Thomas has got the idea.
Logan's heart metaphorically explodes out of his chest with how strong it's beating. Thomas hasn't been to a planetarium in ages. It isn't really Logan's role to suggest activities on the fun side, so he's kept to himself, silently hoping for another side to bring it up. They have spare money for it. And here it is. In three weeks from now.
"That's... I don't know what to say. Thank you." He clutches the first aid kit to his chest.
"Well duh thank me, but it's okay. It's payback." Roman gives him two band-aid speckled thumbs up. "Consider it a date."
Uh-
Hm. Well, there goes Logan. On the floor. Dead.
~~~
"More sophisticated and logical word for fuck."
Logan slams open Virgil's door, just as he's putting the last details on his embroidered spider web jacket.
"Dude, what?" Vrigil turns to him, only to see Logan laying on the floor, malfunctioning.
He goes over to the lifeless form. “Logan… You, like, never come to me with your emotional problems. I can’t help people. Do you want me to tease you? Because I can totally tease you.” He pokes him, and Logan rolls over to face the ceiling.
“It’s because I never have emotional problems, Virgil. I believe in you to keep a secret however.”
“Is this about the planetarium Thomas just planned? Because I can totally see why he shouldn’t go, with all those people around, judging his every step, and the chance of being separated from his friends, or seeing someone familiar and it’s just awkward..”
“No, I agreed to the idea. I had wanted to go for quite a while.”
“Does it… Have to do with Roman?”
“Of course it has to do with Roman. Even now, he is still the largest thorn in my side.”
“Apparently you’re a masochist then. So, what’s up with him and the planetarium?” Virgil circles him, seeming bored but willing to hear the story.
“He was the one who suggested it. In fact he said to  ‘a date’.”
“Ahh. So you are here for emotional issues.”
“It’s not an emotional issue. I simply wanted to tell you that I think it is an optimal time to tell Roman about my newfound fondness for him.” He sits up, and Virgil gives him a hand to stand.
Virgil chuckles. “It’s not bad to ask for help, Logan. But that does sound like a good idea, or whatever.”
“Of course it’s a good idea.” Logan says, hand bouncing up and down at a rapid pace. He looks like he’s sweating. Virgil squints.
“But you’re nervous.” He observes. “And you want to talk about it with someone.” He holds up a hand before Logan can protest. “Ah-ah. Don’t lie to me on this one. Sit down.” He takes out a chair, and then looks at Logan. “You know what, maybe not in my room.”
So they go to Logan’s room, and he explains his plans, and some worries, and Virgil nods along and agrees.
“By the way, have you been seeing the way Roman’s been acting lately?” After Logan seems to have finished with ideas, and they were just sitting together, Virgil speaks up.
“No? Perhaps. He did want to make cookies, which is odd for him, and he called me kiddo, if I remember correctly.” Logan recounts the last few days. He’s not completely sure. Roman has always been a slight enigma to him.
“See, that’s what I’m talking about. A few days ago, he came into the living room, and he was wearing a polo! If it weren’t for the colors, I would’ve thought he was Patton. And then.” Virgil stares at Logan, who looks impassively back at him. “Just yesterday, Remus told me that he dumped some of his posters into the trash.”
“Ah, perhaps he’s finally taking advantage of his wall space.” Logan says quite proudly, in a room where there are many cork boards on every left-over piece of wall he has open.
“No, you don’t get it. When’s the last time you’ve seen his room without posters?”
“To be honest, I don’t remember.” Logan admits. Virgil nods along, his eyes staring at him intensely. “Because I barely ever go into his room.” Virgil slumps. “Listen, Virgil, the concern is appreciated, and I support you continuing to collect evidence on this matter, however, it sounds like he’s trying something new out. I have no reason yet to be concerned.”
“Okay, whatever.” He gets up from his chair. “I hope you feel better, nerd. Catch you later.” He salutes, and just sinks out.
Logan continues to stare at where Virgil once was, thoughts jittering. Is Roman really acting that strange? He almost sounds like he’s trying to become Patton. Maybe he’s looking to renew his look for Thomas? He had been rather heart-broken when he misinterpreted Thomas calling him his hero. He also likes costume changes. Maybe he’s preparing something.
Logan hopes that Roman will be alright in the end. And that he himself will be as well. He takes a deep breath. He can do this.

No. 13 for the happy fic writer ask game, please and thank you 🥰
13. Describe your writing style. If you were to participate in an anonymous fic writers guessing game (like The Masked Author), what writing habits do you have that would be a dead giveaway that it's you?
Hmm I don't think I'm especially stylistic as a writer thus far. A fair bit of dialogue, minimal on the internal thoughts, extensive scene descriptions or settings. I suspect I would not actually be especially guessable, because even reading back my own work it doesn't necessarily feel like its me... This is not proving to be a very interesting answer. Would be kind of curious to do a "masked author" type game with people who I broadly feel like write similarly to me - in the sense of the balance of dialogue to description/internal thoughts - and see how guessable it is to others.

UC 51.15 - UCL vs St John’s, Cam
Not to brag, but there were fifteen people in my house last night. Such a gathering is by far the largest I have been a part of in more than eighteen months, and as such, was a great deal of fun, featuring two separate board game stations and a long discussion about whether or not we should move the armchairs from the living room into the kitchen (where the action was), which in the end we didn’t. But it was nice to be able to make that kind of non-decision again. Point being, I was playing Codenames instead of watching University Challenge, which is why I’m only getting round to it now.
Tumblr media
Last week’s abject performance by Sussex meant that the three teams who lost their opening matches with scores of 135 would all be coming back for the play-off round. The other side to reach the play-offs - St John’s, Cambridge, scored 155 in a loss to a strong Imperial team who scored 210. Their 155 meant that they outscored the teams who beat each of the other play-off contenders as well, making them strong favourites for this match.
However, these games aren’t played on paper - here’s your first starter for ten.
UCL are twice-beaten finalists, while St John’s are one time winners - taking home the crown in 2018. Their captain Chan was the standout performer on the buzzer in the first round, and he keeps up that good form with the first starter of the night - though it takes him a long time to recognises clues about Beijing. I feel like another team would have picked his pocket on this one, but it doesn’t matter, he is the quickest on the night and St John’s take a full house on the first set of bonuses.
UCL skipper Kiso hits back with a starter of his own, on the Abel Prize, and the Londoners take two bonuses to close back within five. He comes in far too early on the next starter, guessing as to what linked a number of clues before the second clue had even been given. Rewatching, its clear that he has just misheard the question, and thought it to be easier than it was, which is unfortunate, and Clark gladly picks up the points for St John’s.
The first picture starter, which looks like someone has drawn on a map in MicroSoft Paint, but with the brush size absolutely massive, is picked up by Chan, and St John’s increased their lead to forty points. An educated guess of Raymond Chandler by Kiso allowed UCL to close the gap, but Chan simply cannot be stopped, and takes his third of the evening to wrest back the momentum for St John’s. Ouyang feeds him some excellent information on composers for the bonuses, correctly picking Rimsky-Korsakov from a list she’d suggested of possible answers.
Tumblr media
The music starter is allowed to play for an incredible length of time, before George managed to claim St John’s first non-Chan starter of the match by correctly identifying Jennifer Lopez. An insanely brilliant buzz of Sutton Hoo from, yes, you guessed it, Chan, meant that the Cambridge quartet were well and truly in control of things now.
Desperate to get back into the match, Fleming came in early for UCL with oleatious, which isn’t a word, but which sounds like the correct answer, oleaginous, with which George gleefully buzzes in to steal the points. I’m losing track of how many starters Chan has now, but suffice to say, he grabs another one next time out, and there will be no catching St John’s now.
Kiso gives it his best shot, recognising Lawrencium very quickly, but they can’t take anything from what I would’ve considered a gimme set on football, though to be fair the questions were designed in such a way as to make them less easily guessable. Another for Chan put Cambridge 175-50 up with just over five minutes left on the clock, then a quick full set from UCL narrowed the gap to a nice round hundred.
Hang on, another full set for UCL made it seventy five. Another starter for Kiso, but this time they can’t fully capitalise. However, a first of the night for Traegar retained the initiative, and they were suddenly within forty points. Bloody heck, Chan is nowhere to be seen now, as Kiso takes charge with his sixth starter of the night. Two bonuses closed the gap to twenty. What on earth is going on here? A clutch buzz from Traeger made it ten. A complete and utter guess of County Down made it five.
They couldn’t do this, could they?
Answer…
No, they couldn’t. But by jove what a go they made of it.
Final Score: UCL 170 - 175 St John’s, Cambridge
What a match! From the jaws of a routine victory, St John’s very nearly grasped defeat. They completely fell asleep in the second half there, which is why Chan really needs someone else to step up on the buzzer, because he won’t be able to carry them through all of their matches (as evidenced by their first round loss).
And all it would have taken was twenty more seconds for UCL to have clinched one of the most incredible comebacks in the history of the challenge. They were 120 points down with 6 minutes left, and raced to within 5. Bravo. Unlucky, but bravo. If only they’d heard of St Johnstone.
