INTRODUCING: CRACK IN THE CHASSIS

Because we always need more cracky fanworks. Yes, even if we have a billion already. We need more.

Every absurd crossover or AU, every ludicrous pairing that would never ever happen in canon, every "What if?" thought that was followed by "Actually, it'd be weird as hell but I could make that work"--we want them.

SPN canon brought us evil clowns that explode into glitter and an entire season where the villain was high fructose corn syrup. Fandom can make it worse. We have the technology.

Crack in the Chassis is bang and a reverse bang at the same time--but NOT limited to fanfic and 2D fanart!

THAT'S RIGHT. You can get cracky with format as well as content!

Have a bunch of SPN figurines you'd love to pose for photo stories or--if you're a masochist--stop motion animation? We'll take it.

Do you have a ton of red color gel food dye and a sheet cake that would make the perfect canvas for a torture scene? We'll take it.

Do you have a few "in this essay, I will" jokes that you're lowkey dead serious about, even though you know you'll look like the Pepe de Silva meme? Don't be self conscious. We'll take it!

Filk, animatics, short films, cosplay--if you can find a way to transmit your fanwork over the internet and it's ridiculous as hell, then you can submit it to CRACK IN THE CHASSIS.

You can be either a pitcher (creating your work first) or a catcher (claiming a work from the gallery and creating a work in response to it.)

And don't worry, if you want to keep to the traditional ways, fanfic and digital fanart are fully welcome.

As pitcher, you can specify which types of fanworks you're willing to claimed by! You can treat this as a traditional bang or reverse bang if you want to--or you can get a bit adventurous. Allow your fanfic to be claimed by another fanficcer and see what it's like to collaborate with the same equipment. 😏 Mark yourself as exclusively fanart4fanart and watch the ficcers cry about it.

💚: What does everyone else get wrong about your favorite character?

Ooh, it's time to make some enemies.

I really, really dislike the popular fanon characterizations of James Fitzjames. Depending on what particular flavor of queer a fanwork is depicting him as, the kind of... shallow femininity that gets forced on him makes me MASSIVELY uncomfortable. It often comes across as somewhere between homophobic and misogynistic caricature, personality stripped away and replaced with a pretty dress.

I can see where this started, though—the pre-Carnivale dress scene is something that's very important to a lot of Terror fans, and perhaps something that endeared them to a character whose Empire-loving, glory-hounding, "the atrocities I've committed are fun table conversation"-believing ways are (hopefully) unsympathetic to a modern audience. Still, I'd like to see more fanworks engage with that side of James Fitzjames—the tool of an empire that can never love him back.

This isn't to say I don't love queer or trans readings of Fitzjames! I just want to see the character still be a glory-hounding veteran of an imperialist war, and someone I can still believe would shoot rockets at bears.

🧡: What is a popular (serious) theory you disagree with?

I had to think about this one for a bit. I'd say it's the take that I see floating around on the Internet a lot that Moby-Dick is cosmic horror. If we're taking cosmic horror to mean the horror of the incomprehensible, the impossibly alien, the Things Man Was Not Meant To Know, then there is exactly one chapter that fits the bill—"The Castaway", which includes maybe my favorite passage of the whole book.

However, almost the entire rest of the book is our narrator-protagonist making sense of the whale, as if knowing everything he can about it is his way of coping with the devastating trauma of losing everyone he spent two years of his life living with.

It's almost reverse cosmic horror—rather than a sane man going mad from coming face to face with an incomprehensible monstrosity, our mentally ill (traumatized/depressed/bipolar/open to interpretation) protagonist makes meaning for himself by learning to comprehend the monstrosity.

📖: If you had to remove one chapter from the book, which would you choose?

Ooh, that's a good question. And a hard one.

Moby-Dick is, rather famously, full of chapters upon chapters of whale facts, some of which are even true. I will not be getting rid of any of those. Those are load-bearing whale facts. You pull them out, and the book collapses into a respectable revenge tragedy, rather than the earth-shattering psychological epic that it is. The whale facts represent both the fact that for long stretches of a sea voyage, nothing particularly exciting is going on, and you have time to contemplate things like the immense scarred brow of the whale, and also that this story is being told by a traumatized man who's going off on tangents because he really doesn't want to get around to the part of the story where he loses everything and all of his friends die.

If I had to get rid of one chapter, it would probably be "The Town Ho's Story". Of all the ill omens and tales of woe that the Pequod's crew encounter on their fateful final voyage, this one drags out longest and (to me) was one of the less memorable. However, I'm sure it's probably someone's favorite chapter. Many of them are.

This is a Severitus-centred fest. As such, we will only allow works that feature Severus Snape and Harry Potter in any platonic/non-romantic/non-sexual setting. No Snarry works will be allowed.

Pitching and claiming will be hosted via google forms. The links to those will be posted accordingly. There will be mandatory check-ins once you have claimed. Please stay in contact with the mods (see FAQ). Fics must NOT be Snarry. Ages to participate: 13+, creation of works rated M or E: 18+

Minimum requirements for your works:

Fic: 2500 words

Poetry: 500 words OR 6 poems

Traditional or digital art: 600x600 px (scans in reasonable quality), and a basic description for accessibility

Spoken audio work: 15 minutes, and a written summary (transcript nice-to-have; podficcers may be allowed to pod an excerpt of their template if the final product is at least 15 minutes long)

Original music: 3 minutes, and a basic description (for instance lyrics, chords, sheet music) for accessibility

Song parody: 2 songs, (link to) reference work, and new lyrics

Playlist: 7 elements

Moodboard: 7 elements

Original dance: 3 minutes, and a basic description for accessibility

What is Severitus?

For the sake of this fest, Severitus is every form of fanwork where Severus Snape and Harry Potter have a non-sexual / non-romanticrelationship.

Severus’ and Harry’s gender don’t have to be male. We welcome any female/non-binary/trans or other queer characters, and characters of any race, and of any other identity, in our works.

Please note that it is our foremost goal to create a chill fest and good experience for everybody participating. That means we need to create a safe space for Severitus shippers and as such, we cannot allow any works that even wander the line to being read as sexual or romantic in the sense of “Snarry”.

Severitus includes the following:

Snape as Harry’s father/father figure (biological, adopted, stepfather, uncle, godparent)

Snape being Harry’s mentor (Professor, Master in apprenticeship setting, friendly neighbour, you name it)

Severus and Harry being siblings

How does this Big Bang and Reverse Big Bang work in general?

The Severitus Big Bang is a fanworks fest centred around Severitus and Reverse Severitus works.

Creators pitch their ideas of any form to other creators to work on them together and create two or more intertwined fanworks of different kinds/media.

The spirit of this fest is to connect creators and encourage each other's creativity to collaborate and celebrate Severitus together. If you don’t feel comfortable collaborating with others, it is technically possible to sign up as a “solo team” and create multiple projects for the same idea on your own; however we hope (and we give our best) to create a safe atmosphere without pressure or negativity for our teams to flourish.

Creators can sign up (pitch, claim, or both) to create works, which, ideally, should be ready by the submission date. (See: [What happens if I have to opt out]). After submission, we plan to reveal the works in a staggered reveal (ideally, we will get new Severitus content every day in June). All the works will be part of the Severitus Big Bang 2024 AO3 collection.

How can I participate?

This bang is more formalised than just posting within the given time frame.

To participate, creators should sign up and can either pitch, claim, or both to create works.

You are allowed to pitch and/or claim as many works as you feel you can manage in the creation time span.

1. Pitching Pitching means you offer up an idea of yours for other creators to claim later on so that you can create fanworks in collaboration. This is the perfect opportunity to get ideas/prompts that have been on your mind for a long time, but you didn’t have enough time or creativity to work on, out there so that others can share in your joy.

Please note that a pitch is more than just a one-line prompt; the requirements will be finalised and posted closer to Jan 1st.

If you ask yourself why all the effort: it is the mods' attempt to formalise the process of presenting your idea for collaborating with other creators so that you needn't know your collaborators' identities to have a high likelihood to create something you both / all like. The process consists of a Google Form.

2. Claiming Later on, creators can claim any of the given pitches that request collaborators.

There will be three rounds of claiming. To ensure that we have the best possible overlap with our creators' needs and wishes, we (the mod team) will work out the best fitting teams, and as many matches as possible, after each round of the claiming period. After matching, any open or partly-open pitches will be opened for claiming again. We hope that all pitches will be claimed after the third round; the unclaimed ones will be open for pinch hitting and will receive at least a little something from the mods.

You will then be notified about your claim and how to proceed.

You then have a period to create. Let your creativity strike, discuss your ideas and works with your co-creator(s) and simply do what you do best. Ideally you have your work ready by the submission date. (See: [Important Dates]) After submission, we plan to reveal the works in a staggered reveal (ideally we will get new Severitus content in June).

What types of works am I allowed to create?

You can create any type of fanwork associated with the pitch you claimed.

Here is a list of possible types of media:

Music (both original music and song parodies)

If you are unsure if the work you want to create will fit the parameters of this fest, please feel free to contact a mod; in these cases, we also advise you to check in with your fellow team member(s)

I have no way to access to the pitching / claiming form in the given time frame, but I still want to pitch / claim! How do I do that?

If you know you won’t be able to pitch / claim during the according period, please contact us and we will send you the pitching or claiming form in advance so you can participate.

For reasons of fairness, please let us know when you will need the form by so that we can pre-release the forms to all participants at the same time.

Pitching or claiming early will not influence your likelihood of being paired with your first choice(s).

Do I have to pitch to claim?

No. You can pitch and not claim or claim and not pitch or do both, it is up to you. However, we hope to receive a lot of pitches and claims to make this fest work, so it is super, duper awesome if you can do both.

Can I create works based off of already existing fanworks?

For your own pre-existing universes, yes, as long as the Big Bang work(s) are newly published and understandable as stand-alone! If at all possible, we would like to ask for your pitch to stay anonymous until claiming ends.

You can use an already existing fanwork as your pitch if you have permission to create secondary/derivative fanworks by the original author/creator. Please note that we (the mods) can not grant you this permission and can also not monitor if every pitch meets this stipulation.

If you as a creator want to give permission for others to use your works as such, maybe add a fanworks permission statement / transformative works policy to your profile. You can find a statement builder here or check the mods' profiles for inspiration.

When will this happen? Important Dates:

What happens if I can’t make a deadline/have to opt out?

Of course, we hope that every one of you will be able to make the submission date, but as we all know: Real life happens.

If you realise you won’t be able to make the deadline, please contact us early so we know and can plan accordingly. It is completely okay if you have to ask for an extension or drop your claim. We want this to be as accessible and chill as we can make it.

Just please inform us because we (the mods) have to plan the posting schedule.

How will the teams be formed?

You can either sign up as a pre-formed team with your fandom BFFs (with or without the option of pitching for more team members/claiming as team for a pitch), or the mods will assign you your team member(s) based on who responds to your pitch/which pitches you claim.

We encourage you to be open to other creators and share the spirit of this fest.

I would like to be paired with [XYZ, a specific person]. How do I let you know?

If you want to be paired with XYZ, the best way to make sure is to sign up (pitch or claim) as a preformed team with yourself and them.

If you pitch your work on your own, we cannot say in advance who you will be paired with until the claims come in at the beginning of February and we can not guarantee that we will assign XYZ as your (only) claimer, because we will have to take all the claims into account.

We will also not reveal the pitchers and claimers to each other until the teams have been decided, and will not reveal the final teams until publication of their works. (So only the teammates themselves know who works together with them until the reveals.)

I'm not quite comfortable working with others. Can I still participate?

If you don’t feel comfortable collaborating with others, it is technically possible to sign up as a “solo team” and create multiple projects for the same idea on your own; however we hope (and we give our best) to create a safe atmosphere without pressure or negativity for our teams to flourish.

What happens if I don’t get along with my team members?

In your claiming form we ask you to give us your Do Not Wants. We try to match the team members to the best of our ability, taking those Do Not Wants into account, and hope that you will get along fine.

If, despite all this, you notice that you can under no circumstances continue to work together with your teammate(s), please contact the mods. We do not want to force you to work together with someone you can absolutely not stand and we will then find a solution if this might happen.

However, we want to encourage you to be open-minded and give others the benefit of the doubt. We hope to create a fun experience for everybody.

Why are there mandatory check-ins?

We plan to do four mandatory check-ins with you (our participants) to ensure that everything is alright and you are still participating in this fest.

This has several reasons, foremost to make planning for us easier and to ensure that we can help out if that is needed.

Please note that we don’t want you to feel pressured or patronised. It is completely okay if you just answer “I’m still here.” and tick the box in the relevant google form for those mandatory check-ins. You don’t need to report your work progress to the mods; however, we do recommend using these dates to check in and report to your team (yes, we know, some of us are procrastinators).

We hope to simply offer guidance and act as a reminder, as life can get busy sometimes.

What happens if I miss a mandatory check-in?

You will have one week to respond to each mandatory check-in. If you missed it, the mod team will reach out to you. Just shoot us a quick response and you are fine.

If one more week passes without response, we will have to assume that you dropped out.

If you already know in advance that those just happen to be the two weeks where you are away without internet access, that's fine. Just let us and your collaborator(s) know in advance and we'll mark you as checked in.

This is totally different from what I know from other Big Bangs. Why?

Things evolve and for this, Serena wanted to make the concept of Big Bang more versatile and therefore adjusted it to what she (we!) thought would fit this fest best.

The goal was to allow as many different types of media as possible, as well as allow the claiming of as many different works/ideas as one wants. Therefore we allow any type or art, artists can claim artists and so on.

For this fest, the working together and connecting aspect is the focus (and we are of course rewarded with tons of wonderful works). We like to think that connection spikes creativity and helps us to create our own fandom safe space in which we can thrive.

We also want to make this as chill as possible to take away pressure - which is why we set the minimum word count for fics as low as 2,500 words.

What is pinch-hitting?

Pinch-hitters are people who volunteer to take on an extra pitch later on if somebody has to opt out and drop their claim.

Can I claim after the deadline if I finish with my first project earlier and want to take on a second pitch?

If there are projects looking for pinch-hitters, yes, absolutely. Please feel free to contact a mod if you finish early and want to take on a second pitch.

How do I post my work?

Please add your works to the Severitus Big Bang 2024 AO3 collection (spelled Severitus_Big_Bang_2024) and add the mod account (Severitus_Big_Bang_Mods) as co-creator.

We will approve your work for the collection and use the mod account to change the publication date accordingly to our posting schedule.

Please note that you have to actually post the work to the collection, keeping it as a draft does not suffice. It will not be visible to the general public until one of the mods reveals this work, so don’t fear to do something wrong, and don't hesitate to make changes even after posting to the collection.

Can I post my work to other sites besides AO3?

Yes, you can (and are encouraged to) cross-post whatever you want to whichever site you like. We just ask you to wait with crossposting until after your reveals in the official Severitus Bang AO3 collection!

Can I add my work to other fests or collections?

Yes, you can. After reveals, you are free to do with your work as you please, for example add the works to any collection you like.

Additionally, while waiting for reveals, you are allowed to co-submit to fests and events that have no unrevealed period (e.g. @hp-flowers, free submissions phase of HP Poetry, @voiceteam, May ficlet challenge, many bingos, etc.). Please note that your work will not be accessible in those collections until after reveals.

Disclaimer: provocative name aside, I am not actually trying to be mean here, these are just my opinions offered for Entertainment Purposes™️, and I’m not mad at anyone who has a different opinion.

I'm lucky if I remember why I blocked anyone. I just have to assume past!Anne had a reason. 😂

8. common fandom opinion that everyone is wrong about

Okay, so this one's about Merrill, but before I say it I have to qualify that I am not on the Merrill hate train. I love Merrill, I think she's a great character, and I don't think she's wrong for wanting to restore her people's history. I do think that what she's doing is dangerous enough that it's in conflict with the duties of a Keeper to protect her people--but the thing is Merrill knows that, and that's why she agrees to leave the clan. She believes this is too important, more important than becoming a Keeper, which she also says she would have been terrible at. I do think Merrill is not being totally honest with herself about the danger at first; in Act I, she's very quick to insist that it's fine and she's got everything under control. But I think her years in Kirkwall make her more mindful--she sees a lot of demons, a lot of blood magic, she sees how Anders struggles with Justice, and she almost falls to another Pride demon herself if she goes into the Fade with Hawke. (Personally, I also think this might have something to do with her proximity to Audacity on the mountain, and then having more distance from it in Kirkwall, because I do think the Pride demon was influencing both her and Marethari. In the short story "Merrill" it's very clear that it called out to both of them, rather than Merrill seeking it out on her own.)

By Act III, she's undeniably aware of the danger because she asks Hawke to come along for that very reason. What Merrill is doing is undeniably dangerous, but dangerous does not necessarily mean evil or wrong. In the end, though I think there's undoubtedly some level of pride in her motives still, I do think Merrill is fully aware of the risks, and believes that the possible gain is worth it, and takes every precaution she can.

Furthermore, I think that Marethari fails in her duty to her people when she goes to the demon and allows it to possess her. Her responsibility is to protect the clan. When Merrill leaves, Marethari needs to accept her choice and let her go. She needs to move the clan on, out of reach of whatever danger she believes Merrill poses. If they need to contact another clan, raise new halla, she has years to do that. Instead, she keeps them on Sundermount for the better part of a decade because she (and her own pride) simply can't let it go, and in the end she leaves her clan leaderless and possibly dead because she (and, I think, Audacity) convinces herself that only she is capable of protecting Merrill. But Merrill isn't her responsibility anymore. Her clan is. And she abandons them.

So the one thing that kind of sticks in my craw is the idea that Merrill must be an unparalleled genius because she successfully reverse-engineered an eluvian from a shard. Because the thing is she didn't do that! That's the thing she didn't do! She never successfully got the mirror working in canon. Maybe in the next game, for some world states, we'll find out that she did finish it, or maybe we'll never hear about it again; as of the information we have right now, she never made it work.

And I know this one is contentious, because there's a big interpretive gap as far as how close Merrill was to making the eluvian work. And I'm not trying to step on anyone's headcanons here; there's room for speculation and when it comes to headcanon or fanworks there's truly nothing wrong with going the route that she was really, really close, and maybe succeeded down the road.

But as far as canon, we simply do not know. We do not know how close she was. We do not know whether she had built it correctly and simply needed the power to activate it, or whether there was some fundamental flaw in her theory she hadn't figured out, or whether it was wrong from the ground up. We do not know whether Audacity truly knew what she needed or would have given it to her had Marethari not interfered. We don't even know whether it's possible to build an eluvian in a post-Veil world, for that matter! We don't know, and we probably never will.

In fact, it's unclear to me whether Merrill actually knows the full extent of what eluvians are supposed to do. She says in her Act II quest "Mirror Image" that she knows that they were used for communication over distances (which was the extent of ancient Tevinter's understanding of them, and what Duncan remarks in Origins), but she doesn't know exactly how they work. I don't remember her ever saying that it's supposed to be a physical portal you can travel through. There's a moment where Hawke asks what's wrong with it and Merrill exclaims, frustrated, "Well... look at it! Do you think it's just supposed to sit there not doing anything?" I'm not convinced she actually knows what it's supposed to do, only that it's important to her people's history. I'm not blaming her for her lack of knowledge here--I think as fans we've gotten so used to hearing about eluvians that it's easy to forget their existence isn't common knowledge in-universe even among the Dalish. Ariane's clan was safeguarding an exceptionally rare text about eluvians and even she didn't know what they were (in part because most modern elves canonically are not fluent in ancient Elvish, something else I think people kind of forget).

Again, I don't think Merrill is wrong for wanting to discover and restore her people's history. If anything, the gaps in their knowledge only make that more important. I'm also not saying any of this because I'm trying to refute the idea that Merrill is smart. I think she's very clever and resourceful and I think this shows in a great deal of her dialogue with other characters.

I just don't think we can know, based on canon, that her theories were 100% correct and she is now the foremost expert on eluvians. Again, I have zero issue with this as headcanon--I really am not coming for anyone who holds it as such! My only disagreement is when it's put forth as Fact, and like anyone who takes a different view of canon is wrong and is trying to tear down Merrill.

Because like all my faves in this series, it is possible for a character to be good and compelling and interesting and even right about a lot of things without being right about everything all the time.

16. you can’t understand why so many people like this thing (characterization, trope, headcanon, etc)

Okay we'll take this one for whatever values of "so many people," because at this point I don't really see this one come up all that much, but as a huge Sera fan, I do not understand the appeal of the "Sera is Andruil/has a fragment of Andruil" fan theory, and I don't think I ever will.

For one thing, by the end of Trespasser we know that Solas and Mythal are walking around in the waking world still because they are exceptions. The rest of the Evanuris are not hiding among mortals. We know where the others are! They're in the Fade! Solas trapped them there! That was a pretty significant thing that happened!

For another, Solas and Andruil were not friends. If Sera was or was carrying a piece of Andruil, and Solas recognized her, I think he would have reacted strongly. Maybe he wouldn't be capable of killing her on the spot in his current state, but also I sort of doubt he would be walking around gently prodding her to remember who she is.

The theory also seems to be partially based on the misapprehension that Sera's archery skills are somehow magical, which I've already talked about.

But also, and more importantly to me personally, I feel like it just ruins Sera's character. Sera's story is that of a young adult with a lot of unrecovered childhood trauma, and deep issues with identity, rejection, and abandonment, still trying to find a place where she belongs and discover what she believes about the world. What does her unwittingly carrying around a piece of an elven god add to that? What does it add to her painful memories of Lady Emmald, to her sense of alienation from other city elves? It undermines the perspective she brings to the Inquisition as a commoner, a Nobody who is proud of being nobody. It completely ruins her relationship with Solas, turning them from a fascinating set of foils (the ancient elf who broke the world vs. the modern elf who is in so many ways the product of the world he created) into just two ancients arguing with each other. If anything, it feels like papering over everything that makes her complicated and interesting in an attempt to "fix" her: Look, she is Elfy after all! She's the Elfiest!

Sera doesn't need to be secretly an ancient goddess to be a compelling character.

Writers who are salty believing the rules operate differently for fanart, what is that you want? For fic to get more love, or for people to stop shelling out for pixels and trinkets? Tell your fellow fans to stop paying for illegal merch if it bothers you that much. Or if that's not it, you just wish you could get in on the action? Good luck trying to squeeze the community for money. Why should other writers commission you, unless you're fundraising for charity or they really like your style? In a hobbyist space by writers for writers, that's just not the norm, and it shouldn't be.

And for that matter, there are other norms in how writers support writers. When people put together events, why is a Big Bang structured that way, with the opposite known as a 'reverse' bang? That''s just how the majority thinks by default. Maybe you'd like for fandom to be a little less oriented from a writerly perspective, and I would too; an influx of more non-writers would be nice, yeah. Even the lurkers. But the loudest people in the room will always be writers, 'cause, hey, words.

It has been highly amusing to me to see all the crying in recent years about how artists are what fandom revolves around, pity the poor writers, etc. That's hilarious after my time on LJ and mailing lists that basically defined "fandom" in terms of fanfic.

Somebody's always got the short end of the stick. One usually prefers it to be someone else, but there was never a time or a community in fandom that was perfectly fair and egalitarian.

The downside for artists is that a commercially-oriented space has less room for newbies whose art isn't professional level, for mentorship without a sense of competition, and for small fandoms or rare pairs. I'm not saying nobody does things for the love of it or treats other artists as peers instead of rivals, just that there are tradeoffs to either a highly monetized or non-monetized fandom space.

TBH, I think what a lot of people want is the pipe dream of paying the rent with fanworks. They think they see others doing this, and they're envious. In reality, a tiny handful of BNFs who've picked the right juggernaut pairing do appear to be doing that, but the vast majority of people who do fanworks for pay earn peanuts.

AR Ship Week - Fanwork Recs in 2023

This is the second weekly post in the lead up to Alex Rider Ship Week. Only 3 weeks to go!

This week we’ve got a selection of shippy fanwork recs submitted by members of the fandom, two years after our previous rec post in 2021.

**Please note that I haven’t listed all the details for the fics so take care to read the tags on AO3 before diving in!

Yassen/Alex

An Uncivil Contract by fredbasset Yassen and Alex are very well written in this period fic. The plot twist is great. I can’t get enough of it.

There's Something About The Way You Are by countessrivers Very intense, twistedly hot and excellent writing. Alex's rather unusual turn ons feel spot on and Yassen indulges him perfectly

The Boyfriend by Suzie_Shooter An interesting view on Yassen being Helen Rider’s boyfriend with a sprinkle of canon.

Lionceau by Too_Many_Rooks This is one of the fics that really got me in this fandom and made me want to stay, I'm a big fan of reverse verses and role reversals and this one hit all the right spots. The inherent madness to Alex's character adds a dash of adrenaline while reading and I cannot wait to get back to this fic when it isn't so fresh in my mind to rediscover it entirely!

Paying the Price by Suzie_Shooter Love this sequel. The dynamic between Yassen and Alex is beautifully written.

Pillars of Sand by Nanimok This one-shot of an aged-up Alex in university is both a unique and bittersweet one; he’s not completely in dire straits or sucked into a hopeless future, yet at the same time, he hasn’t escaped MI6’s grasp, either. I adore Kyra in this, mostly because we haven’t seen much of her in fics as a side character to Yalex driven stories, but also because there’s hints of her push and pull with Alex the way I’m highly anticipating Series 3 will. I love the touches of humor, but most of all, the Yalex! Yassen gentleness, the way he wants Alex to find peace in a way he never could, the way he actually tells Alex as much instead of keeping it to himself, closed off and private. The Yassen we get to see has communication open with Alex and it’s obvious they care for one another… and this tenderness amidst all of Alex’s internal struggle was such a breath of fresh air, for both me, the reader, and for Alex whose safe place at the end of the days lies in Yassen. Nanimok captures their dynamic in this AU brilliantly and somehow makes Yassen’s brief appearances feel so impactful; I can’t help but draw parallels between what we’re experiencing from Alex’s limited POV with Alex himself because that’s what the writing in this fic invokes for me.

Run With Me by Polarnacht Alex being afraid for Yassen is just perfect. Angry car sex is a bonus!

The Call of Blood by TheOtherBlue Very hot Vamp!Yassen AU with sensual blood drinking, a little danger and sexy times.

Don't Need A Gun by BoldAsBrass A very sensual seduction of Alex.

Stalking His Dreams by Rirren A great exploration of Alex dreaming/hallucinating about Yassen after season 1 and very hot. I love the blurring of reality and fantasy/dreams and the way it makes you wonder what really happened.

Estrov Tattoo Parlour by Too_Many_Rooks I love tattoo parlor AUs and damn does this one deliver. From Yassen's complex back story to Alex's tortured life in the present day, I couldn't get enough! Especially with the detail in Yassen's tattoo at the end, a must-read!

Duty Of Care by Suzie_Shooter Goodness, Suzie’s writing is always a bullseye straight into my heart. This Yalex fic plays a lot with Yassen and Alex’s dynamic, especially in its exploration of one of my favorite tropes/conflicts for this fandom: Alex’s incredibly complex feelings about Yassen the assassin and having to come to terms with what that truly means. The way Alex ultimately chooses to lie to MI6, the large part he plays in awkwardly accompanying Yassen’s recovery from injury, the sugary sweetness of Alex’s concern conveyed through the get-well-gift-basket even though he’s no clue the first thing Yassen does or doesn’t like. On our assassin’s end, I absolutely adore the rare and arguably one in a blue moon injured/whumped!Yassen, bloodied and battered. He’s so not okay and I’m quite fond of seeing Alex as the caretaker and more competent one of the dynamic, albeit temporarily. We love to seen tens of hundreds of iterations of the two of them meeting for the first time since Yassen’s [fanfic] survival of Eagle Strike and how that conversation might go—in this fic, it was succinct, honest, and apologetic, and an extra kudos from me about Alex sounding quite amenable to the potential of working together with Yassen! There’s Suzie’s usual beats of humor weaved in between the banter that always makes the dialogue between the two amusing and highly enjoyable, and a plot that somehow makes your stomach twist and turn like a rollercoaster or as I like to think: it’s always fun to try to guess where things are going and even more fun to see Suzie’s execution of the amalgamation of action, common loved themes such as Alex feeling unmoored since Ian’s death, the most evocative emotion, and a unique flavor of Yalex that you can check out in all her other works!!

Safe Houses by fredbassett An incredibly funny series of Alex corrupting Yassen's safe houses and his heart. Their chemistry throughout each single fic is off the charts.

Perform Under Pressure by Polarnacht A great one-shot of Alex being so fixated with Yassen, his stare is enough to get him through a very usual performance.

Striking the Chords and Blowing the Flute by countessrivers This fic is very, very hot, with some great dubious consent and power imbalance.

Wintermute by wewillalwaysenduphere I absolutely love cyberpunk romances and the film noir aspect to this fic makes it even better. The author's sense of detail with the setting and attributes of each character, coupled with the mysterious past of both Yassen and Alex is excellent, chef's kiss!

Quietly into the Night by loony_lucifer (LoonyLucifer) This is an older fic, but very, very good. A fourteen-year-old Alex is forced to join Yassen and the criminal he's helping to escape on a road trip. There's some great tension as Alex at times doesn't seem to realise the nature of the danger he's in and fascinating Yassen/Alex scenes.

Lonesome Pines by Suzie_Shooter I like the Christmas rom-com / thriller vibe to the story, it was both very dreary plot-wise and gleeful trope-wise with the bodies coming up and Yalex bickering about it, something I look forward to reading again next Christmas!

The Fictitious Fiancée Affair by Suzie_Shooter An amazing take of fake dating with a bit of Angst, great plot and many feelings - and the ending Yassen and Alex deserve.

A pathway into his very soul by Myulalie Amazing Siberia and royal sex, that’s all you need to know.

The Full Boyfriend Experience by BoldAsBrass Yassen captures Alex and wants him to be his boyfriend. This fic is incredibly hot and also hilarious, with some lovely descriptions and very witty dialogue.

Blowing in the wind by kelkblr Great mission fic, very immersive with a possessive Yassen and a happy ending.

To The Sea by Suzie_Shooter A wonderful roadtrip of healing and finding each other among the jumbled up pieces of their lives.

pebbles in a stream by ireliss A beautiful tragedy of misunderstandings and missed connections.

The Art of Drowning by kelkblr This is very dark but I love the older and tired versions of Yassen and Alex in here, both traumatised by their lives and finding some kind of understanding in each other.

Smut it up before September ends by Myulalie Excellent collection of short smutty one shots.

The Well of Silence by Polarnacht A great exploration of sensory deprivation trope, very sensual and warm, with just a bit of despair and humor.

Target Practice by RavenJames A beautiful, bittersweet fic with a very grey Yassen and a sexually charged atmosphere between Yassen and Alex.

Fake It Till You Make It by Polarnacht The title pretty much sums it all up - Alex and Yassen are made to act as boyfriends until they realize the pretense isn’t in the picture anymore.

The Final Mission by OctarineTheColorofMagic Great fic about betrayal and finding a safe heaven in an unlikely place or rather with an unlikely person.

True Love's Kiss by Polarnacht An amazing one-shot of Yassen finding a way to make Alex hold on and survive by true love’s kiss.

Dancing by Polarnacht A perfect series to get sucked into Alex and Yassen story.

Other

A Matter of Time by Polarnacht This fic has such a fascinating premise, with Yassen returning to the past and being offered his past self for the night... Includes both hot sex and some great Yassen character study. Yassen/Yasha

The Darkest Places in Hell by fredbasset Dark but not between the pairings with a lot of comfort. I enjoyed the relationships between all of them, Tom/Alex, Yassen & Alex & Tom and the hints of Yassen/OC were amazing, the OC is very fleshed out and intriguing. Tom/Alex

Only Once in Paris by Zombieheroine Really wonderful thoughtful fic that explores Yassen's relationship with sex really interestingly. John/Yassen

under observation by galaxylentil The fic does a lot with a small number of words, and really fleshes out the clone's characterisation. I love the little cameo by Julius at the end. Sasha/Alex

I really do like Vincent conceptually and I think his relationship with Cloud is extremely sweet, but something I think I've noticed is that sometimes... fanworks and by extension perceptions of him rub me the wrong way? And i think it's that ppl focus on the pain of his past and keeping him constantly haunted because of the repercussions of his passivity that it kinda ouroboroses itself into missing the point and nullifying his character development by KEEPING him passive.

Something i think you can't understate with Vincent is that, like Lucrecia, he actively decided not to try to fix anything with Hojo or Sephiroth; it was because of guilt overshadowing everything and fear of inhumanity mind you, but he was actively woken up by someone he KNEW and still decided to go back to sleep about it. Vincent’s agency was to remove his own agency because he felt too much self pity. Which I do get the depression tbh and being way deep into something you KNOW is awful and feeling terrible you didn’t get out sooner or try, but there's something to be said that he could theoretically be held culpable through inaction. And Vincent KNOWS this.

There’s a certain level of self-centeredness in believing you are uniquely terrible and irredeemable, uniquely broken with sin, and therefore uniquely deserving of punishment and scorn. There’s a strange arrogance in throwing yourself away because you’ve deemed everyone else incapable of seeing your “monstrousness,” of making a decision about you for themselves, and that you could not use your existence for good. Deciding you are sinful and doling out punishment on yourself with such a certainty you will not fight against it. As if you are God giving final judgement.

yes he's had horrible things happen to him. yes he's deeply traumatized. yes he's had horrible thoughts, yes he's done horrible things. If you think you're the only one to have ever been this terrible, then of course you can't heal. why would you? it's never been done before, and the misery is comfortable because you can focus on you.

Cloud acts as a motivating character to him, interactions spurring him to get out of the coffin, consider if sins could be forgiven indicated by getting a phone, and genuinely focuses on Cloud's state pretty closely, but pre-Dirge he's STILL languishing and is kinda aimless still without someone to follow. What I think Dirge is in the end is Vincent finally and truly taking initiative to move on and face his past without crushing himself and therefore ACTUALLY take responsibility. Responsibility means nothing unless you strive towards a net good after it, and Dirge to me is Vincent learning this lesson and forgiving himself in lieu of anyone else to do it for him.

This doesn't stop him from being a naturally passive character, but it stops him from being a miserable and stagnant one; there's people in his life he won't always have and keeping them means keeping their future, and so I think what bothers me is that focusing too hard on the lament denies him that movement forward. He'll always carry it with him, much like Cloud, but that's what I think makes a relationship between them good: loving urself through another and denying self hatred bc of it. Tbh Vincent probably has a whole complex about Cloud

rather than his agency stemming from removing his own agency in a situation where he should have taken action, i’d argue it’s the reverse; vincent is giving himself agency by assuming blame over a situation that he inherently had no agency in and punishing himself accordingly. nothing he would have done could have changed what happened with lucrecia and sephiroth because he didn’t have the knowledge he needed to take effective action in the first place. part of dirge is him accepting that lucrecia made her own choices and learning to let go

before that, vincent hasn't reached the point where he can carry on without some sort of extrinsic motivation. arguably he'll never get there or even stay there on his own without another person there to provide that motivation for him. he's immortal and deeply depressed; what's the pressure to do anything when he has all the time in the world that he doesn't want?

as long as he doesn't let his problems become anyone else's problems then that's all he needs to worry about-- which is why the moment he learns from avalanche what a mess everything with sephiroth has caused, he decides to leave with them to take responsibility for what happened. veld isn't reason enough to leave, no matter how much they might miss each other, because that's exclusively personal. sephiroth and hojo are enough because they're threatening other people's lives. the logical progression to punishing himself for what happened is working to fix it next.

after that first step, vincent is finally exposed to things he can ground himself in other than his own regrets, and the people he cares about are making his problems their problems. to vincent, i think cloud represents a lot of things-- a mirror of himself that he’ll do anything to keep from making the same mistakes and being hurt the same way; hope that he himself can have a fraction of the same redemption and the strength to move forward; a moral compass and a companion. someone he needs to stay close to and safeguard but also someone he can and should never quite touch. if i hold a knife i cannot hold you if i hold you i cannot protect you etc etc

Hello my dearest, darlingest pal and friend. I answer this months late during a break between Writing for Work. As all asks should be answered tbh

No surprise. once again I get a bingo with Gary King. He's just...he's so Character. Even Simon Pegg keeps talking about how fun Gary is from a emotional projection creative perspective

I said "canon isn't real if I don't look at it" because I rewatched TWE with a friend a few days ago and I had to cover my eyes during Gary's most Unethical Moments tm (mainly him. Harassing what, as far as he knows, is literally just a Teenage Boy). However "everyone else is wrong about them" because he IS a better person in the epilogue and he HAS grown & changed and everyone who argues otherwise is a negative nancy (I HAVE COMMENTARY TO BACK ME UP !! I HAVE EVIDENCE)

HE. FRODONK. MR BAGGINS. I could never squeak him he must be handled gently (not because he's '''not strong''' but because he deserves Rest)

Against what some fans may say, Frodo is BRAVE and STRONG and a HERO and I literally fucking adore him. He's angelic imo, what with the sacrifice and the resilient kindness and all. Get rid of the "if" for the square on the bottom left because things DO happen to him and I DO cry. But he has a happy ending (WHICH HE FUCKING DESERVES!!!) so I'm okay.

However much I love him, I know that I don't care about him as deeply as I do some other characters, meanwhile people out there have written such fantastic meta and fanwork. So he's "blorbo by proxy" for me. I am very satisfied to let yourself (@spacedadpicard) & other Frodo fans keep him, you tend him well

that being said I care him SO many hearts. All of them, each one. I grew up with him and I've gotten to see him from different angles over the years, so by that alone he's Special to me. And then he's SOOO wonderfully written in the movies and Elijah Wood gave him an UNPARALLELED energy and I'm forever kissing Frodo's precious forehead grateful

I GOT BINGO ON THOMAS BECAUSE I LOVE HIM. After I watched this movie for the first time I texted my friends that the inside of my head was shaped like Thomas Sharpe BECAUSE IT FREAKING WAS!! I was screaming and Breathing so much during the finale of Crimson Peak...if that ain't "a beast unleashed" I don't know what is.

He's. agh. His heart is so sweet and gentle...ok yes he's aided in the murder of multiple people so. he indeed hosts venom within his body. Engaging with this story as fiction; I very much do not condone his actions; you know how watching movies goes.

this man was born and raised in Hell and the movie coveys this so effectively and torturously...he never desired other people's suffering but he keeps on getting dragged into other people's selfishness and malice. It's. Agh. It's so overwhelming to see Thomas embedded in horror yet TRYING to make something GOOD and INNOCENT out of it!! He literally wants to be. HE WANTS TO BE KIND SO FUCKING BAD AA--

Anyway. Gah. His hope & his bitterness & his sorrow & his care are all so immaculate. Character of all time. I ignore canon sometimes so I can imagine him having a happy ending

I like Xie Lian because he has survived embarrassment on a cosmic scale so he's immune to embarrassing situations. At the same time he's like, "If San Lang realizes I have a boner, I will actually have to go die."

SVSSS post-canon memory loss AU where Shen Qingqiu gets wife plotted (again) and is hit with an amnesia curse, causing him to lose all memories of his life as a transmigrator. Now Shen Qingqiu is no sucker, so he doesn't break character. However, having forgotten about the system, he is absolutely BAFFLED at some the decisions his post-transmigration self made. Why the hell would he choose to still push Binghe down the abyss?! Why? It doesn't make sense!

Like, he's more shocked by this than the fact that his future self is not straight.

Does Shang Qinghua choose to explain about the System? Maybe. Or maybe he's on a vacation with a certain ice prince, giving plenty of time for BingQiu drama:

"Binghe, do you know why I pushed you into the abyss?"

"I don't know. Shizun never said."

"I never gave you any clues?"

"Perhaps because I was a demon, or because Meng Mo--"

"No. That doesn't make sense." [Shen Qingqiu doing some quick thinking.] "Binghe, I think there must have been another reason. A threat, maybe to you or me, or to all of Cang Qiong Mountain sect. Something or someone made me do it. Otherwise, there is no reason on this earth why I would ever push you into the abyss."

Just found out that the long fic I had been re-reading and repeatedly checking for new chapters, is gone now. I should have downloaded the whole thing when I had the chance. ;o;!

Seems like the author privated their AO3 account---I hope that's all that happened---since AO3 has had some bad press about AI scraping, lately. Hopefully, AO3 will clear this up (since I heard AO3 was actually vs AI, but it was just one of their lawyers who was pro-AI in an interview). But if AO3 is actually pro-AI, I hope they announce a reversal on that. I'm just so tired that things I love on the internet keep disappearing, and yet I still stupidly act like social media is enough to save things for me. I should have learned by now. I REALLY SHOULD HAVE LEARNED BY NOW. But I keep forgetting, because I am dumb. Whoever said that once something is on the internet, it's permanent, was never in fandoms! Because for YEARS, artists and art just keep disappearing. And I can't really blame them. I've seen some artists leave messages about how they're erasing their fanart so they can go pro, without possible employers looking up their older fanworks. Sometimes you get out of a fandom or have a really bad fandom experience, and I've seen artists delete their art from only specific fandoms, to erase those bad memories. ;_; Sometimes entire websites die off and archives are gone. It's happened too often, and I don't know why I've gotten out of the habit of downloading EVERYTHING as soon as I see it, just because social media has gotten so convenient. Before social media, I saved EVERYTHING to my local drive, as soon as I saw it. I need to get that habit back.

Steter Bang 2023 Q&A

What is a “Bang,” in general?

A Big Bang (or "Bang" for short) is a specific type of challenge usually involving long fics and accompanying artwork. Read more about Big Bangs and their history on the Fanlore website here.

What is the Steter Bang?

It’s a Steter focused Bang! We’re big lovers of Teen Wolf’s Peter Hale x Stiles Stilniski round these here parts.

However… we’re kinda expanding on the exact definition of “long fic” and the exact definition of “accompanying artwork” for the 2023 Steter Bang.

Yup! We’re doing two tracks this year: the “Big Bang” track and the “Mini Bang” track. The Mini Bang track will be extremely similar to how we ran the event last year: we’re asking for a 1,000-word minimum story. For the Big Bang track, you’re signing up for a 10,000-word minimum story (which is more in line with traditional “Big Bang” events!). And for the “accompanying artwork” part, we’re broadening that definition to include all sorts of transformative works of fanfiction. Some examples could be: manips, mood boards, playlist, icons, vids, filk, podfic, embroidery, tarot cards, fanart, ficbinding, or remixes of fanfiction.

I’ve seen most of these but what’s a “remix?”

Let me explain! A remix is a piece of fanfiction that reimagines an earlier piece of fanfiction. This could be by role reversal, a POV flip, a sequel or a prequel, or lots of other things! Check out the Fanlore page on remixes right here.

It should, however, stay true to the definition of a transformative work and “add something new, with a further purpose or different character, altering the [source] with new expression, meaning, or message.”

Okay, give me the nitty-gritty details.

Although every fandom runs Bangs slightly differently, we’re mirroring what we consider a more traditional “Big Bang” event format. Everyone will sign up and pick which track they want to do – Big or Mini – and whether they want to participate as an author or an artist (don’t worrry, we’re including all sorts of fanwork creators as artists – see above!). Authors will have a slightly shorter sign-up period so that they have time to get their summaries to us. We’re going to allow a slightly longer sign-up period for any last minute artists to hop on board. 😉 It’s going to be the same sign-up form but we’ll just edit it when we’re no longer allowing author sign-ups. Authors will have just under a week to work on their summaries (including tags they feel may be relevant and info on anything that would be considered an archive warning). Once artist sign-ups close, we’ll send out the summaries to the artists. Artists then choose their top 5 that they’d like to create a fanwork for. We’ll do some Excel wizardry to match everyone up and send out info on partners the following day. ☺️

We’re not setting a strict timeline for hand-offs this year (although, we’re more than happy to give you a deadline if you need one!), so you’ll need to work with your partner on your own timelines for getting both works done. We really want authors to consider that you may need to hand over your completed fic well before the event is done (possibly halfway through!). If your partner is doing a podfic or a ficbind or some other fanwork that requires a completed work, then you’ll need to factor this into your schedule.

I’ve never done a fandom event like this, though…

The best time to start is now!! If you feel you can’t draw or can’t write, then create a mood board & a playlist! Or make a vid! Or create a podfic! That last one is what got me, personally, into creating for fandom.

As Neil Gaiman once said, “[W]e can take joy in the act of creation.” I hope that you decide to dive in and experience that joy for yourself. And we’ll be there every step of the way, if you need any help!

Good morning, sweet things!

I know we all devour fanworks like there's no tomorrow, and the buffet is vast and varied. But in order for it to exist at all, there must be those who create, which many of you already do, and many others contemplate.

Here is an opportunity to dive in! A Reverse Big Bang starts with art, and then potential authors are invited to peruse the submitted works and see what strikes a chord of inspiration. This year, there were around 100 pieces submitted, and not enough authors to claim them all.

So if you've been toying with the idea, my darlings, now is your opportunity. It's a 5k word minimum, written before May 1st, which is very manageable.

Here is the MDZS RBB carrd which has all the links and schedule and rules and such. Go there first, read the requirements, and then go join the Discord server (it's their only venue for communication, so that part is required) which will joyfully direct you to the massive art gallery so you can select between 5 and 10 works that inspire you.

If you've never written fanfic before, this is actually a very gentle and extremely rewarding way to dip a toe in. Your fic will have guaranteed art, and you will have an automatic audience (everyone likes to cruise big bangs and reverse big bangs when they're released!) and a ready-built community of people to cheer you on on the Discord server. I highly recommend that you take a chance on this.

If you write something the length of this post (~250 words) every day between now and May 1st (76 days) you will have a 19k word fic!
