eun-jeong yoo ★ profile
Eun-jeong speaks fluent Korean because he's Korean-American (born in America) and his grandparents couldn't speak English so he had to speak Korean to them. Also speaks Mandarin because a lot of the people he grew up around spoke Mandarin but he doesn't speak it super fluently, he's still trying to learn a lot. Most of the Mandarin he knows is conversational Mandarin and then the words he needed to know to take peoples orders and stuff around a restaurant.

liam arieh ★ profile
Liam knows Latin cus he used to be an altar boy who wanted to be a priest. Ironic? I know. He continued learning more Latin outside what you need to know for Church because he was curious so now he speaks semi-fluently (because Latin is a dead language and I don't think you can speak completely fluently but I could be wrong?) He also knows Greek because he's a big mythology nerd.
Tumblr media
ayaka yamato ★ profile
Ayaka's family is Japanese so she can speak Japanese. Her father would literally kill her if she was too 'Americanised' to speak Japanese since he already thinks America has been a terrible influence on her. Her mother tried to get her to learn Chinese when she was younger so she knows some but she didn't continue with that so she doesn't speak fluently. She knows some Korean because she's a K-pop fan but she doesn't speak fluently. She is trying to learn though.
Tumblr media
ryuunosuke yamamoto ★ profile
Ryuu is Japanese so he speaks fluent Japanese but, unlike Ayaka, he speaks a different Japanese dialect! He was born in Aomori! If the two of them spoke to each other, Ayaka would kind of understand him but not perfectly. He's trying to learn the Tokyo (standard) dialect. He also speaks really good Korean. He can read Chinese but he sucks at inflections (the tones that go up and down in Chinese) so he doesn't speak it well
Tumblr media
fujio watanabe ★ profile
Actually, Fujio was born in America so doesn't speak a lick of Japanese. Got roped by his brother into 'learning their heritage' so he's learning Japanese from Ryuu and from the really kind director of the orphanage they lived in. Coincidentally, both Ryuu and the director are from Aomori, in Japan, so the Japanese he's learning is that same dialect. Doesn't know that dialects exist so Tokyo dialect? The fuck is that? Unfortunate when he finds out LOL
Tumblr media
ryouta watanabe ★ profile
Ryouta was also born in America. Way better than his brother at picking up languages (and he puts more time into it) so he's more fluent in Japanese than his brother! Knows both the Aomori dialect and the Tokyo dialect and is trying to learn both at the same time! Wants to learn Chinese next but only because he wants to play more video games.
Tumblr media
soren kumar ★ profile
Soren's born in America but his entire family is from various parts of Maharashtra, in India, so he speaks fluent Marathi (his grandparents would kill him otherwise, probably). He also speaks fluent Hindi. He also speaks Konkani, another language from Maharashtra, because of some cousins but he doesn't speak it fluently enough. Lastly, he's diligently learning Japanese, Chinese and Spanish because that's where a majority of his band's fanbase is and Soren is nothing if not a dedicated leader.
Tumblr media
yeong-bae kigal ★ profile
Yeong-bae was born in Korea so he speaks fluent Korean. He was born in Busan so he grew up speaking the dialect from around there but he can also speak the Seoul (standard) dialect. His father is half-Rwandan, half-English so he also knows some Ikinyarwanda and Swahili from when his father would come back home and teach his children some things from his travels.

Blog Post #2
I will never forget the first time that I saw the video “Firework.” I remember watching it for the first time on my parent’s computer, with my Carribean grandmother sitting behind me. I remember watching with baited breath for “the scene,” the one all of my classmates had talked about in various tones of awe and disgust, unsure what was upcoming, unsure how to feel. And then it happens. Two men kiss. And I hear from behind me my grandmother yell out, and say, “Gal! Me ne want to see no batty-boys!
I will never forget not just her tone, the venom in her words, but the words that she used. I tried to look it up later on, but didn’t see anything in Patois to describe queer people other than slurs. Was there no way to be queer and brown in the same breath, to love someone without having to refer to that love in words dipped in hate?
I really loved  Picq and Cottet’s piece on the translation of queerness into languages other than English, because it was fascinating to see queerness portrayed in a non-Western context. For an identity that has existed in every culture through centuries of history, we have someone crafted and created a narrative that only the Western, English reckoning of the LGBTQ identity is the right one, and is one that captures all aspects of queerness. I remember thinking of my grandmother’s slurs, and trying to wonder if there was a queer in Hindi or a way to speak of it in Patois, and the article beautifully encapsulated the strife of trying to translate one’s identity into a space it doesn’t belong, like trying to cram a straightjacket onto a person too tall, the fabric ripping at the seams, unable to hold the weight of centuries of culture and identity being compressed into a single fitted and tailored box.
In Edenborg’s piece of Putin, we see yet another example of this same rhetoric, where in the guise of traditional values, queerness is not only supresed but lamented as a weakness, a lacking of character, a bowing of sorts to the Western usurpers attempting to rewrite native histories and cultures.
In coming of age in America, I struggled a great deal with my sexuality, in knowing how to own brownness and queerness in one space, in finding a way where I could be something other than straight in a brown space and still have a place. In radical spaces, we were told that white folks were the colonizers and the oppressors, and that included white queer people. In that same breath, it was the white queer community who I believed was writing the narrative of what it was to be queer in America, and without embracing that within a space, was there ever going to be a way to find a home, a sense of self that was not constantly under scrutiny? What part of myself would I have to erase to finally belong?
Helen Gao’s piece highlights as well the consequences of that suppression, what it looks like to hold back the entirety of a community, to restrain and collar them to the point of submission. What happens when in trying to shun Western queerness, your country and culture creates a queerness of its own, something not othered but revered and adored, something that becomes embedded within pop culture and phenomenon? China’s “little fresh meat” are an example of that - men in makeup, performing artists stars who refuse to be hidden, who popular media is unable to stomp out, despite the best efforts of the regime in power. Even with Jinping banning “abnormal” individuals from television or blurring out earrings on men, the love and support that these performers have received has dwindled little, especially within some of the most important voting groups.
In trying to understand the questions of global queerness, I wonder how much we can impact the narrative if we create space for queerness that is untranslatable? Picq and Cottet highlight within their piece an identity that doesn't fit within the English grouping of LGBTQ, called the Sangomas. They are described as, …”traditional healers who are women with dominant male ancestral spirits, and who choose women lovers.” Rather than trying to ascribe Western ideals of queerness to them, what if we normalize allowing folks to exist within the different, allow their own words to write the litanies of their story? What if we spent less time translating words and instead we began to pepper English and other languages with the stories and cultures around us? Let there be words that have no meaning and no translation, that exist not for our understanding but for the sake of those they define. Let us give those who claim that queerness is a weapon of the West no more ammunition to create hostility for communities around the world, and let us finally work on creating a global identity for the queer community and beyond. My grandmother may not have the words to see or accept me now, but maybe with the right words, we can see that change, and create the space to reconnect all those families who have been lost in translation.

Do My All
Pairing: Filipino!Reader x Bucky
Words: 2.4K
Warnings: angst, mentions of blood, an insecure reader
Tumblr media
This was nothing more than me trying to offer some comfort through writing my feelings away with our good ol’ Bucky Barnes. To anyone reading this, you are fucking loved, you matter, and there ARE people out here who cherish you, and acknowledge the things that you do for them. Happy reading babies ❤️
Tumblr media
“Hello?” “How are you doing over there, anak? Pasensya ha? I was working when you called and I was tired so na tulog muna ako bago nagising ako. Kakatapos ng dinner dito sa bahay. Kumusta ka na?” (I’m sorry, I was working when you called and I was tired so I slept first before waking up. Dinner just finished here in the house. How are you now?)
The familiar cheery but tired voice of your mother had made you immediately tear up, heart aching as you imagined her robed form leaning against the dining table, trying her best to speak loudly and clearly in hopes that you hear her. “Oh, ma, it’s nothing. I just missed you.” You manage to crack out before tears have started to flow down your cheeks. “I was feeling off today at work. Lagi nasa office na ako, gusto ko nga sana magpunta sa mga missions kasama so co-workers ko. Nakakainis to, ma.” (I’m always at the office now, I wish I would be able to go on the missions with my co-workers. This is frustrating, ma.)
Your mom sighs on the other end. “Mag video-chat muna tayo ha?” (Let’s video chat)
You didn’t hesitate to press the FaceTime button on your phone, your face quickly appearing on the screen before your mother joins the call. As you imagined, her familiar robe was on her slumped and tired form. Being only to see the upper half of her face, you cracked a smile on your tear-stained face. “Ma, set the phone standing on the table. Lean it on something,” you say, laughing a little as your mom struggles a tad to do what you say, finding a big enough container to lean it against. “There we go,” you sniffed, a smile on your face as the sight of your mother calms you down.
“Bakit na iiyak ka naman, anak?” (Why are you crying again?) Your mother asks, worry being evident in her tone as you try to sniff and wipe your tears. “Anak, matagal talaga ng process nito, hindi ka pwede mg balik sa work field mo! Tapusin mo muna ng treatment mo!” (The process really is long, you cannot go back to your work field yet! Finish your physical therapy first!) Your mom urges, making you nod.
“I am, ma.”
“Oh, okay, good. Are you doing your exercises?” “Yes, ma.”
“Oh, are you drinking your prescribed medicine?”
“Yes, ma.”
“Kaya gusto ko nga ikaw mag maging nurse eh! Mabuti nga may pera yun at hindi ka masasaktan katulad ngayon! Anak!” (This is why I wanted you to become a nurse! At least there’s good money and you don’t have to be hurt like you are right now!) Your mom’s voice raises slightly as worry fills her once again.
“Ma, I promise, it’ll be okay. I’m just… homesick and wanting to work again that’s all.”
Your mom sighs, wishing she could do more to ease your worries, both the spoken and unspoken. “You better be better by the time I’m on vacation anak, that way we can be all together again. Okay? I know you can do it, you are strong. You are beautiful and talented. I…” She sighs, looking down and shaking her head. “As much as I would have liked you to become a nurse, I know you do your job well. You are protecting us, the world. I know you are doing your best. Don’t let this stop you, okay? Alam mo I’m a phone call away. Okay?”
You smile at her reassurance, thanking her while you notice she’s trying to fight her sleep despite being a couple of hours behind you. “I know. I’m trying to remember that,” you sigh. “Matulog ka, ma. Pagod ka pa, baka hindi maganda ng tulog mo kanina. Tawagan ko kita bukas.” (Ma, go to sleep, you might have not rested well early. I will call you tomorrow.) You try your best to keep a smile on your face as she nods tiredly, offering you her heartwarming smile back at you.
“Okay… you take care, okay?” you hear her say, you nod in response. “Good. You sleep soon too. You need the proper rest. I love you okay?”
You nod again, another smile on your face. “Yes, ma. Goodnight. Love you. Love you bye,” You say by habit before you both end the call. You sigh and shake your head, opting to rest your head on your arms, which were folded on your desk.
“Just five minutes,” You sniff, letting the tears fall on your now tear stained sleeves. You missed your family, especially your mom greatly. You couldn’t get over having to heal yourself completely on your own time without your mother nursing you back in shape. Time going by, you never were over how you don’t come home to your family as often. You were never over how they can no longer be there all the time to ground you at low points like this. You wanted to be enough for them, enough for the time, enough for you. That wish had repeated itself in your head as exhaustion had come over you, allowing yourself to fall asleep.
It wasn’t long until Bucky came to check up on you in your office, something he didn’t admit to enjoy doing. He knocked lightly on your door and came in after no response. “Sweetheart, are you okay? How are you with your paperwork?” His questions were left unanswered as he had met your sleeping form, slumped on the desk. He chuckled a little, quietly approaching you, only to freeze when he noticed that there were tears down your face. Then some that had stained your oversized sweater. He sighed to himself, knowing very well why you were in this situation.
With no hesitation, he began to grab your phone and earbuds, putting them into his pocket before gently and quietly carrying your body bridal style in his arms. After another lookover for items he hadn’t picked up, he walked out of your office, went into the elevator and pressed the button to your floor in the compound. He watched your face, sighing as he watched you breathe steadily, head nuzzled against his body. He sighs, wishing that he was able to do this with you more often, hopefully in better circumstances as he walks out the elevator and towards your room. He wished he could have done more, make his presence known to you more often, and hopefully even his feelings can be out and open.
He laid you down with extra care, tucking you in bed gently as your body instinctively curled up, wincing slightly as you felt your healing wound. “Careful, sweetheart, we don’t want that wound opening up.” He whispers to you, bending down to comb your hair carefully out of your face, tucking the strands behind your ear ever so gently. “There you go,” he smiles, watching as your body relaxes to his touch, a reminder of your constant statement that you were indeed comfortable with the ex-assassin. He gently wiped your tears before standing upright, taking in your beautiful sleeping form one more time.
“You’re workin’ yourself too hard. That’s why we don’t want you to go back in the field yet,” he whispers to you, the image of you post mission in his head. He remembered how you had stood in front of Bucky in your last mission, seeing as a member of Hydra remained hidden, his gun aimed at Bucky. Before he had the chance to deflect it, he had seen your form falling, hands holding onto your side as you fell on the ground. He remembered how quickly you lost blood, and the anger he felt when he had shot that remaining member down. He remembered that nervousness that overtook him as he carried you into the quinjet.
“I had it under control! We only had to do this one quick search through the HYDRA facility and then leave! A mere bullet wouldn’t do anything to me, sweetheart! You know that!” Bucky yelled at you, nearly seeing white from the sight of your bleeding side as you were slumped against the wall of the quinjet.
“I’m sorry, alright?! It was aiming at your heart, Buck! I was worried!”
“And you think I’m not?! Sweetheart, your form these past few missions has been failing!”
“Buck,” Steve tries to intervene, but it falls on deaf ears as Bucky continues to have his say.
“And you have been off at training when we spar, you have started to make impulsive decisions-”
“BECAUSE I WANT TO PROTECT EVERYONE ON THIS TEAM!” You shout with almost all of your energy, trying your hardest to keep your breathing even as you feel the all too familiar pressure on your chest as well as the dizziness. You didn’t want to fight your best friend, not now. You didn’t want to let him down either. You were slowly realizing as you fought for consciousness, that no matter what you were doing, you weren’t doing enough to be adequate for your team.
“YOU ARE NOT PROTECTING SHIT, Y/N, YOU ARE BEING RECKLESS AS HELL! YOU KNOW WHAT YOU COULD HAVE GOTTEN YOURSELF INTO?!”
“Bucky!” Steve tries to intervene, hand on his shoulder. “Enough! Let Romanoff examine the wound while you calm dow-”
“Shit!” The two men snap their heads, seeing Natasha hold onto your now unconscious form.
Bucky didn’t realize that his own tears were falling down his cheeks, remembering the panic he felt, the guilt, the worry, the blame, everything. He remembered watching Steve carry you into med bay, the glare that Sam had sent his way. He remembered how Wanda had told him what you had been feeling the moment he started to yell at you in the quinjet. The thought of him knowing that he had been a part of triggering your panic attack as well as your wound had him feel nothing more than a monster.
He had realized he was in the wrong. You were only trying to protect him. You were trying to protect everyone.
“I’m sorry,” Bucky whimpered, not caring that you were seeing him in a vulnerable state like this. You could only force a smile as you reached for his metal hand, grasping it as firmly as you could, rubbing your thumb against his knuckles.
“I get it, I do. I have been reckless,” you start off, sighing as you keep your eyes on your intertwined hands. “These are simply the consequences. Tony told me I’m gonna be off of missions for an extra month after recovery.”
“But it was my-”
“It’s not your fault. It’s mine. Don’t blame yourself, Buck. I'd do the same if I was in your shoes.”
“Why couldn’t you tell me you were feeling the way you did?” He asks you, hoping that your eyes would be able to meet his. Your eyes remain glued to your interlocked hands.
“You had a lot on your plate, Buck.”
“But we’re supposed to be best friends, aren’t we? What am I, chopped liver?” He sighs, “You know damn well I’ve been in a situation like yours, let me help you, or even at the very least be there for you.”
Your eyes finally meet his. “You’ve gone through too much, Buck. I won’t make you feel what you have felt for decades again. No.”
“Then let me at least check up on you.”
And so that’s what he’s been doing throughout your recovery time. Making sure you weren’t doing strenuous exercises, doing paperwork at your own pace, even asking Steve to find another Avenger to fill him in for some missions. He had tried his all to not leave your side. Was he doing it for you? Or for him? Maybe both.
“God, it would have been easier to take care of you and explain my reasoning if you knew how I felt about you. If you know why I’m so worried. I’m a terrible person for lashing at you the way I did. I’m sorry. I should have listened to you more. I’m sorry.” He thinks.
He sighs, wiping his tears away before telling you goodnight and making his way out of your room.
“Please stay.”
He turns around. Instead of seeing you sound asleep, he sees your eyes staring right at his, glistening as tears once again threaten to fall. He could never say no to you. He goes to your bed, laying on his side facing you. “Have you been awake?” He asks, you shake your head.
“Heard you crying, why?”
He couldn’t help the way his lips curled up a tad. You always were worried about him. “Nothin’' He lies, combing your hair. Another mistake on his end.
“Liar.”
“Well, why were you crying earlier?” He asks, trying to point the topic off of him.
“Don’t wanna talk about it too much,” you whisper with a sigh, “just miss ma, mad at the fact I can’t go on missions, hate that I’ve been reckless-”
“Don’t do that. Don’t put yourself down like that.” He cuts you off, tears already stinging his eyes. He hated seeing you beat yourself down this way. “Don’t do that when you know damn well you’re tryna protect people. I should be thanking you for doin’ what you did.”
Your mouth opened before closing right after, opting not to fight him back on it. You were too tired. “You know I care about you right?” You whisper. If it weren’t for the fact that Bucky had good hearing, he wouldn’t have thought you didn’t talk at all.
“I know. You know that I do too, right?” He watches you look up at him, smiling a bit with teary eyes.
“Hard to believe sometimes, but it’s nice to hear.” Is what you reply.
“Mmm… gonna do my all to prove to you how much I do.” He says with determination, nodding as that had become his set goal. You smile a bit and merely hum sleepily in response. Something in Bucky urged him to lift his hand and caress your soft cheeks with his fingertips, watching as you relax to his touch again, eyes fluttering shut as the repeated action eventually made you fall asleep. Bucky sighs, wishing he could have the courage to tell you what has been sitting in his heart for the past two years. However, the sight of you relaxing to him despite the recent events and the fact that you wanted him to stay for the night will do for the time being. “Gonna do my all to show you how much I love you, Gonna do my all to show you just how I see you. Gonna do my all to make you know that you are more than enough. Gonna do everythin’ to make you feel like the most loved dame there is, I promise.”

An Unpopular Opinion on Reading
A few days ago, I watched an interesting video by a YouTuber named JaidenAnimations. She expressed her dislike for reading and the circumstances behind it.
Well, Jaiden used to love reading as a kid. She loved Geronimo Stilton and its creative narration. Over the years, however, her love for reading eventually disappears as she grows up.
She thinks reading became a necessity and punishment in her childhood. The former has made her read books only to save her grades in school.
The latter served as parental pressure to read books during vacation. It might have good intentions, but good intentions do have terrible outcomes. It was enough for to completely give up on reading.
After watching the video, I realized that the whole ordeal resembles me. You might remember Scholastic Book Fair if you’re from DPS. DPS used to host the said fair at every Parents-Teachers Meeting. I used to buy either puzzles or Geronimo Stilton books.
Over the years, however, my interest in reading books has waned. One of the main reasons was the school itself. I know bad association might have played a role in destroying any interest in reading reading.
The school forces you to abandon your childhood. It shoves you into the world of consumerist mindless robots. As if going through a personal tragedy and bullying wasn’t hard enough for me.
One such reason was when school forcibly spoon-feeds you with books that you’ll never read again. In class 9th, we had three men in a boat, and I didn’t care much for it because I felt reading it was a chore. You still have to read it anyway because your grades depend on it.
The school expects you to speak English on campus, even though most conversations are in Hindi. They tell you to read books and newspapers. Sadly, nobody has time for that since coaching classes and tuitions are busy tormenting us. Then they wonder why most people struggle with speaking English.
Let me ask you something? How many of you have learned English in either school or through novels? I sure did not. I’ve learned English through Hollywood, video games, or conversations.
It’s funny because English is the most practical subject in an impractical education system. If you’re learned the language outside of school, there’s something wrong with our education system.
It’s also worth noting that I can’t make any imagination through staring at words. That’s one reason why I don’t like novels. They’re almost entirely words with no pictures. However, I can read comics or manga. I find them entertaining, not because it has illustrations. It also makes you feel the intensity of an event or arc.
For instance, I find Attack on Titan’s War of the Paradis Arc entertaining. It’s the last arc of the manga, and the battles are climatic and violent. I also remember Uzumaki by Junji Ito. The story revolves around a town losing its mind because it is obsessed with spiral objects.
I’ll still choose mangas, comics, graphic novels over novels because of their illustrations. Furthermore, it’s entertaining.
Sometimes when I argued with my sister, I retaliated by tearing her Twilight books. That move only makes the argument much worse. My hatred for reading is so deep-rooted that I have read the novels in only single digits.
The ones that I’ve read were
1. Watchmen,
2. The Alchemist,
3. Five-Point Someone, and
4. Adultery.
I prefer movies or YouTube videos to understand more about the novel-created worlds like 1984, All Quiet on the Western Front, Harry Potter, and any Steven King stories.
Ironically I don’t like reading, yet I like writing articles. In this fast-paced content consumption, it’s hard to read books anymore. Maybe in the future, if I try to invest my time in reading, who knows, I could make a difference in this world.

What's up y'all let's talk about Unfreedom (which happens to be banned by the Censor Board)
TW: mentions of blood, correction rape, comphet, torture
Here's the thing with it.
It's important
The story has two parts (which go simultaneously btw)
One part is about this guy who was nominated for Nobel prize. In his speech he says "not all Muslims are terrorists, and Islam is not about terrorism. What terrorists do in the name of Islam is not real Islam" (not the exact words, but this is what he intended). And he gets kidnapped and tortured by another guy (who from my understanding was sent to do just that). I won't elaborate the torture too much but to summarize it, I skipped some of it and almost puked (that went really well didn't it)
It's not just him tho. His wife and son (the former having known that this, them being in danger because of her husband's actions, would happen, sooner or later) are also tortured. The wife dies, the guy who was kidnapped is on the verge of death, and the son witnesses all of this torture and kills the kidnapper.
The second part is about this girl, Leela, who is forced by her father (who happens to be a police officer) to marry some random dude (just arranged marriage being arranged marriage) and whoops, too bad, she's a lesbian. She runs away from home and leaves behind a USB which has a pre recorded video of her coming out to her father (the video includes her saying that she tried to like men, even prayed Lord Shiva to make her straight, but couldn't). She goes on to find her lover, Sakshi, (she is a foreigner and "sleeps around" a lot, also has painting of her and Leela naked which she has painted) who although reluctant at first, runs away with Leela, and they have a boat ride moment, end up on this shrine situation dedicated to Lord Shiva, end up "marrying" and sleeping with each other. Happy ending, right?
Ha, jokes on you!! Of course not!! Leela's police father finds them (him and his team did a lil investigation and connect the dots to come to the conclusion that his daughter and the "slut" are sleeping with each other, which, of course, is detrimental to his image in the society, cause of course his lesbian daughter has left him with zero respect cause of course being gay is a taboo, right?) And he tries to threaten ask her to marry the guy she was supposed to, and when she (who was behind the bars with Sakshi) disagrees. You know what her father does? Correction rape. That bitch really watches his daughter and her lover getting gang raped by a bunch of men even when she screams and cries (and mind you, there is another officer who may or may not have have caused all of this, by saying "if it were me I could have cut (something, you don't have to specify what in hindi)) and silently watches everything. (This part brought me to tears)
As much as both of these topics are just as painful to watch, they're both so so SO IMPORTANT to know, especially youth. The former, everyone should, cause the world we live in does NOT have freedom of speech. You cannot say something that could trigger people (either gets you cancelled or killed, depends).
The latter, my god. This hit me home. As much as I love soft gays (I haven't seen any soft lesbians yet sorry) and the happily-ever-after gays, and as much as I fucking bawled my eyes, it's important to know this. Yes, there is happiness. But there is torture too. And a lot of hardship. Even your own fucking parents (I'm sure all queer people know this) will go to any extent to get you back to what is considered "normal".
Don't even get me started on how this film is banned, like yea I get it Leela and Sakshi sleep, and yea ik the torture is somewhat explicit, but by banning this film, they've banned a reality that is not only often overlooked, but also a reality that, like it or not, has traumatized actual people. Correction rape still happens. Opening your mouth to speak what is the truth can still get you killed. Nothing will change.
All in all, would I recommend this film? Definitely. Watch it (only if the triggers go by you, please don't ignore them) and tell me what you think!! I'd love to hear your thoughts on it. Please don't ignore the triggers I beg you

Hello Phati Sari. I asked the question about the suicide attempt. And I just saw the answers about Arnav’s abuse. That is what I am getting at. I feel like he reflected on his feelings for Khushi and realized her innocent or not didn’t matter because he loved her. But I’m not sure he ever reflected on how his actions drove her to the state of mind where she would carefully plan a suicide based on the reasons she gave. And jumping from a one story building could have caused multiple broken bones.
This continues my earlier ask. Couldn’t type anymore. Besides broken bones, head injuries and lacerations could occur. I am at a disadvantage because I don’t speak Hindi so depend on blogs for translation and analysis sometimes. He does say sorry on the way to remarriage but in the light of the real abuse he did I am not sure it showed effectively enough his understanding of that. I just discovered the rewinds where he reflects and I understand he does show it there sometimes but I can find no
To continue. Sorry so long. I can find no English translations for his dialogs in the rewinds. Is there a place you know where some might be available or can you throw some light on pieces of his dialog that shows some deeper understanding of how his actions were abusive and he takes ownership for that abuse aside from Khushi letting him off the hook because she knows he loves her and her tears hurt him too. Sorry that isn’t enough for understanding even in fiction. Please edit ask if need. Than
Hello!
Firstly, I have to say that I think I’ve answered your question already. I realise it was not to your satisfaction, but in my mind I’ve already given my answer. I’m going to answer using specific quotes from your ask to make this a little easier because I think you’re actually asking a different question entirely.
But I’m not sure he ever reflected on how his actions drove her to the state of mind where she would carefully plan a suicide based on the reasons she gave.
But explicitly on-screen, no.
And jumping from a one story building could have caused multiple broken bones. Besides broken bones, head injuries and lacerations could occur.
Well yeah, I wasn’t minimising what could’ve happened. Your earlier question, however, explicitly asked whether Arnav could chalk it up to drama, and I said he could.
That you didn’t like the answer doesn’t change my outlook -- yes the outcome could’ve been serious but a man who thinks he was duped by this woman’s faux innocence, that she was always trying to entrap or confuse him, could absolutely have come to the conclusion that she was faking her attempt at suicide because she wanted something from him.
To clarify, I’ve never thought her attempt was anything but serious, and have written essays about how much I disagreed with the track being given a comedic treatment.
I just discovered the rewinds where he reflects and I understand he does show it there sometimes
Does he though? I mean, Arnav spends most of his time spouting poetry in the Rewind, not genuinely reflecting on his behaviour. I’ll admit to my bias -- both EJ and Rewind strike me as out-of-character bullshit that I enjoy if the mood strikes me, but they’re not canon in my eyes.
Is there a place you know where some might be available or can you throw some light on pieces of his dialog that shows some deeper understanding of how his actions were abusive and he takes ownership for that abuse aside from Khushi letting him off the hook because she knows he loves her and her tears hurt him too
You’re not going to find this in the canon. I’m sorry, I understand why you’re looking for it, really I do. The closest we get are vague statements in EJ and in the Rewind.
(This turned into a bit of a live-blog on the Rewind.)
In Episode 1 of the Rewind, Arnav reflects on their first meeting. He says that he was angry at Khushi because his show was ruined. He says that he rained upon her like lava. (Lava?? That’s taken straight from fanfiction my God.)
Arnav: “Aaj yaad karta hoon toh lagta hai ki kitna bura bartaav kiya maine uske saath uss din.” -- When I think about it now, I think of how badly I behaved with her that day.
He admits to wrongdoing but as it immediately follows a justification, I’m not convinced it’s particularly reflective or deep. He always knew he was wrong -- the countless flashbacks to this meeting showed this in the canon.
In Episode 2, when he talks about the release of the video footage, Arnav smilingly tells the camera that he didn’t realise it would ~complicate~ Khushi’s life so much. This one action invited Shyam into her life and he smiles while he recalls it???
Ugh, this is the episode with the naaaaaavvvvvvv. Naaaaaaaavvvv. Fuck me dead I hate the Rewind so much, anon you’d better send me loads of virtual potatoes for this!
Episode 3, in which Arnav reduces his abuse of the employer-employee relationship with Khushi to a video game in which one has to defeat their opponent.
At least she apparently took the raksha bandhan seriously.
OH MY GOD THE MUG I’D FORGOTTEN THE MUG, BLISSFULLY WIPED IT FROM MY MEMORY. MY EYES. MY EEYYYEEESSS.
In Episode 6, Arnav admits he feels guilty when he thinks of the things he said and made Khushi do on the night of the photoshoot. His punishment is taking his wife to eat parathas -- a punishment Arnav admits is inadequate because he made so many mistakes.
In Episode 7, Arnav admits that regrets many of his decisions in his and Khushi’s story. But he hedges, saying that his mind wasn’t listening to his heart at the time. And then tries to justify his anger by bringing up that she told everyone about Lavanya.
In Episode 8, Arnav says that he gets goosebumps when he thinks about something happening to Khushi at the guesthouse. He says he still gets tears in his eyes when he thinks about how her arm was hurt. And yet, no examination of physical abuse.
In Episode 9, he admits that he’d crossed too many lines and Khushi’s anger was justified when she resigned. He admits that he made her life miserable, that he was “torturing” her. He says that he’d never send her where her life was in danger, though, and that she was wrong in saying that.
Ahh I’d totally spaced on him saying that he’d heard his dhak-dhak for the first time on Teej.
In Episode 14, Arnav reiterates that he regrets how he treated Khushi, and he wishes they knew what they know now: that they were falling in love.
And then Arnav disappears from the Rewind. His behaviour in the contract marriage and beyond is not reflected on.
I’m not seeing anything in the Rewind that constitutes Arnav showing a deeper understanding of his abusive behaviour and taking ownership of it and its influence on Khushi. I mean, it’s there in the edges of what he says, but it’s not actually what he says. And what he says was always in the serial -- in his monologues, in his flashbacks, in his moments of introspection. It should not be news to anyone.
When I say IPKKND is set in a fantasy world where Arnav’s behaviour is not coded as abusive, I don’t mean and so we shouldn’t examine it through that lense. I mean that the characters will not admit to it being abuse any more than Aragorn is going to comment on the lack of women in LOTR or Aslan is going to say “I’m actually Jesus.” The conclusion that his behaviour is abusive is external to the serial, internally he’s driven by the trauma of the Tragedy and has the blessing of Devi Maiyya.
And so, there is no examination -- internally -- of this behaviour. Even in Lavanya’s case, Arnav never mentions the gross power imbalance and her ready acceptance of his abuse as reasons for the breakup. The show is silent on the topic (though my recaps aren’t) and the audience is left with the genuinely absurd idea that it was about how he didn’t love her. It wasn’t -- he knew he didn’t love her when they first broke up lol. It was about their interaction at the poolside where she admitted he’d never been nice to her. Ever. And that she just accepted as it as a given in their dynamic. Even in the Rewind, Arnav emphasizes that he didn’t love Lavanya, that he only saw her as a friend, instead of admitting he was emotionally abusive.
Coming back to Arnav’s reflection -- Arnav always, always, will be able to justify his point of view. Everyone is the Hero in their own story -- the entire thrust of this blog is to show that.
Now, I don’t need Arnav to say he was abusive -- I know he was, but I also think the redemption he was offered in the serial was fine (I’m qhsahil in that exchange, but I reckon you will agree with the others). I think it was in keeping with the characters shown in the serial and I have absolutely no desire to see any come-upperance or vengeance on Khushi’s behalf.
In conclusion, I get where you’re coming from, and I even understand why you want to see him say and admit these things, but I disagree that we see (or ever will see) them in the canon, or that we even need them in general.
Thanks for asking!

Papa Louie Scarlett HCs
-Rosabella Ocampo is a 23 year old singer/songwriter and graduate school student who lives with her fiancé, Rudy, in a Powder Point condo. She is widely known by her legal/stage name, Scarlett Heart and is the lead singer/songwriter of Scarlett and the Shakers. While punk ska and playing gigs with her friends are her true passion, Scarlett plans to become a game theory professor in the future. She can mostly be seen writing lyrics for a new song, riding roller coasters with Rudy, climbing trees with Clover, and just vibing with Marty.
-Scarlett is rather bold and seductive, often playfully flirting with others or making jokes about inappropriate topics. I stole this from Rouge, thanks SnapCube fandub for revitalizing my love for Sonic. Alongside her flirtatiousness is her intelligence and desire to succeed, using rules and lessons that she learned from various games to apply to her daily life. Thanks to her love of poker and mahjong, Scarlett has grown to be very analytical and sly in her motives. Out of the shakers, she is undoubtedly the big sister friend as she’s kind of a bad influence on the rest of them and is always subjected to scoldings by mom friend, Janana.
-Rudy calls her “Princesa” because of her Cinderella-like backstory. Her mother was a very kind woman and Scarlett lived happily with her and her father. Her mother died in a roadside construction accident when Scarlett was only 9, leaving Scarlett heartbroken. Her father then married a woman named Moira with two sons, Graham and David, who was emotionally abusive towards Scarlett until she moved out at age 16. Scarlett’s relationship with her dad deteriorated over time and she’s basically disowned them since. She finds solace in Marty and Clover’s parents, who think of Rudy and Scarlett as their own. She also got along with the other Frostfield residents and helped Willow get back into hockey after her infamous car accident (the first one).
-Stan Twitter often makes memes of her because she’s so iconic and quotable. One of her most iconic moments was when she screamed “I wrote this next one about my bitch ass stepmom. Moira, if you’re listening, your hair is limp and you fucking suck!” at the VMAs.
-Music was her escape as a child, hence why she learned to sing and play multiple instruments. However, her stepmother made her play the violin in the school orchestra as opposed to being allowed in a punk rock band. Even though she was concertmaster and first chair, she hated life so badly. Scarlett can play the guitar, bass guitar, violin, cello, drums, the trumpet, the saxophone, the bassoon, the piano, the xylophone, the harp, the flute, the recorder, the French horn, the clarinet, i didn’t even list all of them and I’m tired already. When one of the other shakers has lead vocals on a song, she’ll take over playing their instrument.
-Scarlett met Rudy during their shared freshman year of high school. Hazelnut High’s orchestra department had its annual field trip to Powder Point (based off my actual orchestra field trip!). Scarlett decided to sneak away from her snobby classmates and teachers and have the time to herself. On one particularly large roller coaster, she sat next to a boy with a Mohawk who told her that since he was a Powder Point native, he could more than handle it. He then proceeded to cry the entire time while holding her hand. They realized how much they had in common and kept in contact even after her trip was over. Their relationship is super lovey dovey, yet chill at the same time. Couple goals, but not on the level of Prudence x Cooper x Taylor.
-The shakers got together during the 23rd season of Flipline’s Got Talent. After the shocking elimination of Taylor Morales in the quarterfinals, the remaining acts were merged together. Scarlett and Rudy and Marty and Clover were two sets of pairs merged together. They all got along beforehand and loved Scarlett’s songwriting, so they all wrote an original song together for the finals. Even though they were fan favorites and had lots of support from the audience, Bill and Boopsy’s amazing ventriloquy act was what won the show, with the upset Shakers coming in second place. Afterwards, they were approached by Janana who offered to become their agent, and all they’ve known since was success. Fun fact: Rudy wouldnt accept Clover and Marty into their act unless they beat him and Scarlett at poker. They did.
-The shakers each can speak multiple languages, with Scarlett being able to speak fluent English and Tagalog, Tagalog being her native language (Filipino gang!). She can also speak some Spanish, Japanese, Arabic, Hindi, and Gaelic because she hangs around the other Shakers and Janana so much.
-All of the food, drinks, clothes, and personal belongings Scarlett loves are various shades of red. Cherries, longanisa, red wine, and candied strawberries are her favorite. Her entire wardrobe? Red. Her LED lights? Red. It honestly scares Rudy how red everything is.
-Her voice would either be Jessica Sanchez from American Idol or Gwen Stefani from the No Doubt era. She also covers a lot of No Doubt songs during their concerts. Speaking of covers, the shakers like to sing classic rock songs as well as modern day hits. Scarlett has the vocal range to do Ariana and Mariah Carey justice.
-Her and Marty are best friends. They’re both on the same wavelength and will most likely have the same reaction to memes, like word for word the same reaction. They usually have to get Rudy and Clover out of trouble most days. I love their chaotic, yet chill energy, like the types that just sit and observe and quietly make funny comments to each other.
-She determines whether she likes you or not based off of how good you are at mahjong or poker. If you suck enough to let her win, she’ll love you forever but if you match her in ability, she’ll respect you but kinda fear you as well. If you refuse to play altogether, she hates you. She’s a game theory student, so playing any board game with her is grounds for disaster because she’ll use her weird psychology and tricks to win all the time. Ironically, she sucks at video games. Even though she loves games of chance, she’s hugely against casinos and betting, instead trading small trinkets like food or makeup.
-At the Cheeseria, she set up a poker table, a mahjong table, and a pool table for the entertainment. They unfortunately had to get rid of the Uno table because somebody (ahem, Jojo) got a little too heated over a match with Papa and Wally. And by “got a little too heated”, I mean that Jojo literally got in a fist fight with Papa and lost.
-All she watches are telenovelas. Don’t ask about The Office or Game of Thrones, all she knows is stuff like Rubi and Maria la del Barrio.
-She doesn’t like musical theater except for Phantom of the Opera. She has taken a few roles as Kim in Miss Saigon, but secretly regrets it because musical theater is so much harder than just a regular concert. She still respects theater actors, but will never again sit through Anything Goes.
-She is the only one of the workers who has managed to successfully punch Guy Mortadello. Koilee and Rudy came close, but Scarlett landed an especially hard punch to his nose. Next to being engaged and forming Scarlett and the Shakers, she says it’s the third happiest day of her life. Now, Guy Mortadello is extremely scared of Scarlett and will cry if he sees her or hears her song on the radio (which is all the time).
-She has a tattoo of a heart of her hand along with a crown. On three of her fingers are a yellow Diamond, green clover, and blue spade.
-Scarlett is absolutely gorgeous and badass, I always kept rewinding Papas Cheeseria just to see her and Rudy in the opening because I had crushes on them both. Anyways, stan Scarlett for good grades (it’s not working though I’m still failing two classes)

Thanks for the ask @rookie-ramsey 💙
You can find the prompt list here.
#49- I have already written this and you can find it here.
#50- “You’re the clumsiest person I know…how did you survive past childhood?”
Word count: 1.1 k

Forgive me if i make any mistakes
Angel
Today is the day Bryce... Today is the day you ask out Aliya. Bryce kept on chanting as he stood in the locker room as he buttoned his blazer.
He wanted the entire thing to be perfect because that is what Aliya deserves.
He never thought that he would be one to settle down that easily and he definitely did not see himself confiding his deep dark secrets to anyone.
But Aliya was different. She understood him and was by his side through everything. She was a blessing. She was an angel.
That's why the nickname stuck.
Dr. Ramsey had been kind enough to let him use the diagnostics office for half an hour so he had gone and decorated it with roses and balloons.
It was already 8:15 am and Sienna would be bringing Aliya around 8:30 am which gave him enough time to reach there without being spotted.
Show time, Lahela.
————————————————————————————
"We are late." Sienna said as they rushed into the locker room.
"Thanks for stating that, Captain Obvious." Jackie muttered as she sauntered to her designated locker.
"I don't know why are y'all making such a big deal out if it. We come to the hospital at this time. So chill." Aliya said as she lazily strolled into the locker room with Elijah.
"You don't get it Aliya. People are dying." Jackie said.
Raising her hands in surrenderance, she spoke. "Okay, okay. Don't need to make it so sombre at 8:26 in the morning."
"It's 8:26?!" Sirena screeched which had Aliya snorting. But that only lead to her to knock her head against the bitch and trip. But she caught herself before face planting on the floor.
HAHAHAHH not today floor.
But pain shot up her leg which had her sitting down. "Fuck fuck fuck."
"Aliya sweetie, open your eyes and walk." Sienna said as she bent down on her knees to see if anything was twisted or bruised.
"Even if she were to keep them open, she would trip on thin air." Jackie snorted.
"Hey now that's not true-" she began but Elijah interrupted her.
"Please. Just yesterday you punched yourself in the face trying to move Aurora's boxes."
"I thought no one saw that." She mumbled as she took her jacket off.
"Everyone saw that."
"Yeah but. It was just a one of case-"
"Aliya when we went for sushi with Bryce, you ended up pouring soy sauce on the both of you. You and Bryce spent so much time in the bathroom cleaning up those stains." Sienna exclaimed.
That's not why we took long but, okay.
"I-"
"Need I remind you of the dock dunk?" Jackie deadpanned.
"Wait, dock dunk? Why don't I know this one?" Elijah asked as he rolled in.
"That's because this happened on the night you had your video game marathon with Phoebe." Jackie said as she shut the locker door with a bang.
"Care to fill me in?"
"Jackie no."
"So Dr. Aliya Acharya and co were sitting on these chairs on the dock. Aliya decided 'hey why not move the chair a little forward so that I can touch the water'." Jackie imitated Aliya in a high pitched voice.
Aliya threw a pen right smack at the centre of Jackie's forehead. "Kutri(bitch) ! I do not sound like that."
But that did not deter Jackie. "So she moves the chair ahead in such a way that the front legs slip into the gap between the wood which flung her into the water."
Laughter echoed through the locker room and Aliya scowled. "That was an accident!!"
"Says every clumsy person." Elijah snickered.
Jackie patted her shoulder shaking her head. “You’re the clumsiest person I know…how did you survive past childhood?”
"Fuck off." She grumbled and Sienna linked her hand into hers.
"Ignore them. Let's get to work."
Tumblr media
—————————————————————————————————
Bryce's phone pinged and he saw that it was a text message from Sienna.
Am I ready?
Hell yeah.
He typed his response and Sienna immediately texted back which brought a smile to his face and boost of confidence.
Tumblr media
He pressed play and a melodious old hindi song played through the portable speakers.
Aliya was laughing at something as she entered but stopped in her tracks when she saw Bryce.
Her eyes wandered to the roses, the balloons and to him, standing in the centre of the room looking dashing in a crisp suit. The entire view took her breath away.
"Bryce... I- is that a hindi song?" She said as she entered the room.
"Yes. I know how much you love them so I asked Jackie to help me out."
Her cheeks were red and she had a wide smile as she walked towards Bryce. He had a soft smile playing on his lips as he grasped both her hands.
"Angel, for a long time I thought that the bachelor life was for me. Drinking, partying and sleeping around was all I thought I would be doing because I never thought that love was something I deserved."
He brushed away a strand of her hair. "But, you changed that."
"You changed everything and I'm forever greatful for that."
He brought her hands to her his lips and kissed her knuckles as her heart beat raced.
I love this man.
"I know we already confessed to each other how much we love each other. FYI, I love you more-"
Tears of happiness in her eyes she playfully punched him. "That's factually incorrect and improbable."
Chuckling he squeezed her hands and continued. "Whatever floats your boat. But still... I don't see anyone else but you by my side. So this is me asking you to be my girlfriend. And since you love puns so much, I have decided to incorporate that into this entire ordeal."
"Bryce, you are the one who love those puns!"
"But you laugh at them so hence proved that you like them."
"I-" she was interrupted by his finger on her lips.
"Trust me you are gonna love them."
Oh lord.
Clearing his throat he put a serious face on. "Aliya, this poem is for you-
Her jaw was on the floor. Okay that was a good one.
Blood is red
Cyanosis is blue
I get tachycardia
When I think about you."
Before she could speak, Bryce spoke. "I'm not finished. Are you my appendix? Cause I have a funny feeling in my stomach that makes me want to take you out."
Aliya burst into laughter and soon he joined in. "Oh. My. God. Bryce. The first was smooth but the second one was horrible!"
"But it made you smile."
Cupping her cheek he asked her. "So what's your answer? Will you do me the honour of being my girlfriend?"
"Of course!! I love you and would be honoured to be your girlfriend." She wrapped her arms around him, hugging him tightly as he twirled around, his heart bursting with joy.
"You don't know how happy you have made me Angel."
Her hazel eyes sparkled. "And you don't know how much you make me happy Bryce." That being said they kissed. It was a short sweet one, where I love you's were exchanged and happiness was shared.
He placed her down and almost immediately she tripped. Bryce caught her and stables her.
"Did I also promise that I would be fast enough for the both of us so that I can catch you everytime you fall?"
Aliya groaned as Bryce's cheerful laughter filled the room.
"I hate you.." she grumbled.
Bryce kissed her forehead, adoration in his eyes. "Nah.. you love me and I love you. We are perfect together."
For all those people who didn't get the medical puns here is a guide:
-> cyanosis: skin turning blue due to lack of oxygen supply
-> tachycardia: increased heart rate
And all the desi people who want to know which song it was, it was pehla nasha from jo Jeeta who Sikandar

Faith versus Logic Final
Could Shara’s rule be an ideal system?
Click here to read the previous part of this article
If you want to give the example of Sharia law as an example of low crime rate and safe environment, and then also consider that ten countries of the world with the lowest crime rate Iceland, Denmark, Austria, New Zealand, Portugal, Czech Republic, Switzerland, Canada, Japan, and Slovenia are there— so why not their system is ideal?
Tumblr media
Sharia laws were defined at a time when there was a tribal culture in Arabia – the monarchy was the system. In that era, there were often wars for animals, women, domination, and expansion of power, in which women were widowed largely— to support them, more than one marriage or to make them mistress was allowed… what wars are happening now?
If the people living there accept it due to happiness or helplessness, but even if enjoying full civil liberties in democracy, the Sharia system of Saudi Arabia is attracting you, where there are restrictions at every step, then you are religiously ill— and you don’t want to think anything beyond faith. Even in that system, this thinking of mine will also come under Blasphemy because I raised the questions, whose punishment is death— do you want such a system? I really do not want it. The one who follows another religion cannot get citizenship there nor can he adopt his method of worship.
How did humans start their journey on earth
And in India, those who are advocates of Sharia seen wandering here and there – there is a request to them that even if our rule is a democracy, but as a true believer, they should apply the Sharia to themselves and don’t do anything which is wrong or a crime with the Shariah. For example—
Avoid the interest-bearing banking system— immediately cash whatever mutual funds, shares, FDs you have. Avoid stealing power, which is the most common custom among Muslims. If photos are not allowed in the house, then break the TV and throw it away. Since porn is also available on mobile and you can see a picture/video of unknown women on Facebook etc., then quit using your Smartphone and keep a simple buttoned mobile. Do not wear tight clothes (jeans, t-shirt, etc.). On the way, getting-up or sitting, do not look at any girl and woman. The Sharia has made the daughter a shareholder in the property, immediately give her due right to your sisters or daughters. These are the deeds which Momins are doing indiscriminately— the rest things like gambling, liquor, womanizing, are a different issue.
If you can do this much then try doing it, then after that, if you talk about Sharia law or Sharia, only then your say will matter to the people.
Did God make a man or the man, made God?
God created man or the man, made the God— this dispute may never be resolved, but an unseen God is in existence ever since the first human being in the world would have found first hope amid awe. Fear and hope – right here begins the God, and even though he may not have been known in any particular way then, but as man became smarter, God too became accepted in different forms and its separation is the prevalent “religion” at present.
Where did religion come from and how logical from the point of view of science?
The real meaning of religion is not what is in front of everyone in the world today, but its practical meaning is this— you are Hindus, I am Muslim, that is a Sikh, that is a Christian and that is Jew.
So for a while, free yourself from this tilak, cap, cross, turban— and find out what is religion? What is its real form— why is it and what has it given to you? What are you achieving from this religion?
Leave the past in the past, whatever was written in those books, was according to the circumstances of that time, was written to handle the humans of that time. Come in the present and think, can it be a religion to abuse someone, or to speak to someone with love should be the religion?
Can it be religious to hate someone or to love someone should be the religion? Taking someone’s life should be a religion or to save someone’s life? To take away someone’s right can be religion or to help any poor fellow to get his right? Can injustice done to someone be religion or give/help to get justice? To torture, someone with the opposite ideology can be religion or to give respect to people of other ideology?
Tumblr media
Think as many questions like these as you can think, think those questions with closed eyes and introspect yourself honestly. Test your answers on the criterion of religion you have been carrying from generation to generation. Think, brainstorm what religion was for— why there was a need for religion and how you are practising that religion. Among Hindus too, “Meditation” is said to be the way to seek God and to connect oneself with him and in us too it is called “Salat”.
what possibilities are there in the universe outside our planet
Salat means meditation, that is, attaching oneself to God— the Prophet adopted this Salat as “Namaz”, Sufis in some other form— but later on people adopted Namaz as a rule and today its meaning is lost somewhere. Do not ask me this question, but ask yourself whether you reach that state of “meditation” in Namaz? That you feel connected to Allah or does your mind keep wandering in worldly additions/subtractions? Remains stuck in High pyjama or Skull cap?  Do you find yourself ever close to “Salat”? If not, find out the reason for that.
However, if by churning so much you do not get this pearl of knowledge, that to hurt someone is not a religion, but to help in someone’s suffering, to help him overcome his suffering is religion— then be sure, that there is a lacking in you being a human.
Religion, Iniquity and Foul-Iniquity
Here people are often seen asking the question, what is religion? So the question is right in its place but the answers of those in front can be different… Actually, when you say Religion in English or ‘Mazhab’ in Urdu, it has a direct and only meaning— The particular ideology, creed, the enclosure bound with the law of uniformity— but when you say ‘Dharm’ in Hindi, then it has two meanings. The first meaning that is commonly practised is Religion itself.
If God is there then how can it be from the point of view of science
But what it has as another meaning is, in fact, the actual meaning of the word “Religion”. Your good deeds— your behaviour that is in harmony with the welfare of humans, that actually is the religion. Now understand this in detail—
Every small or big practice of your entire life is divided into only three parts— Religion, Iniquity and Foul Iniquity. Maybe you ever gave attention to this or not— but every little or big work of yours, every small or big decision taken at every step of your life, comes only under these three rules.
Telling the truth, supporting the truth, living honestly, avoiding false deception, doing justice, to support the justice, to stand for the rights of the victim, to stand against the cruelty, not doing injustice, helping others, avoiding illegal, excluded and selfish deeds that are outcaste by society, means to say that everything you do for the betterment and welfare of human beings… is actually religion.
And on the contrary, whatever you do, the result of which is harmful, troublesome to any human being, which gives suffering… will come under the purview of Iniquity.
Tumblr media
Now there is a link between them, that is, your acts which may seem iniquitous to appear but religion is hidden in them— that is a ‘Foul-Iniquity’ You can understand this with two or three examples— You lie in a place where telling the truth can be harmful to one or more humans— then that lie of yours is Foul-Iniquity. You steal somewhere, where the stolen goods have the welfare of others hidden behind them and not your selfishness, then that theft is a Foul-Iniquity.
You stand somewhere with a Cruel, and there you can help the victims in any way, then it is a Foul-Iniquity to stand with that cruel. You may or may not understand this, but every activity of yours is tied to these rules. And the interesting thing you will find is that it is the core of all religions. On this basis in the Gita, the ‘Kauravas’ were declared unjust by Lord Krishna, or else they also believed in the worship of God and other things— and in fact, “Kafir” in Islamic Mythology has also been determined on this basis. People derive the meaning of ‘Kafir’ as an atheist or non-Muslim according to their own belief.
what are the possibilities for new writers
Whereas, as a religious person, whatever rituals of worship, Aarti, Pilgrimage, Roza Namaz, Hajj, Zakat, etc. have you mistaken as religion, they, can be called the flattering methods or ritualism of God, but it is not the real religion. Real religion is your good conduct, with which if you do these rituals, then in a way we can see them as religion, but alas that it does not happen in practice.
The real religion is Humanity and not these worship methods
Let’s give many examples of this and explain— A true Momin believes in himself that by doing Namaz, keeping Roza, and doing Haj, he is doing a lot of good work and he will get a lot of praise for it – but while he sits at the shop and lying to the customer that this much of this merchandise is purchased, he can give it in that much— though this is not true. He is performing all the good rituals but he is sitting on the rented or untitled land occupied by a house or shop. The stolen light is glowing in the house and after washing himself with water pulled with that stolen electricity, he is reciting Namaz. He is eating sacred food made on the heater burning with that stolen electricity.
Consuming water, fans, lights obtained by direct theft or rigging of the electricity in the mosque, is washing himself and performing Namaz— Performs Haj and becomes a Haji with the money acquired through bribes, commissions, frauds, rigging or by other illegal means. Performing Namaz by surrounding roads as religious work, doing processions, even if all traffic is disrupted, may someone miss their train, plane or bus… or may someone die in an ambulance.
How to write a book in Microsoft word
Similarly, a true Hindu by applying a Tilak on the forehead, ties a red thread in his hand, chanting Ram-Ram day and night, keeps on ringing bells for hours in temples— but at the same time lies, deceits, manipulations, deception are all being done. Donating from the money saved through commissions, bribe, black marketing, stealing tax. The religious pandals are decorated with stolen electricity. Narrating religious stories by installing big loudspeakers, DJ sound— whether there are sick people around, children going through exams or people are going crazy by the noise.
They have been occupying the streets in the name of Ganapati, Navratri, Kanvar processions, even though the traffic system is collapsing. By surrounding the roads in the name of Jagran or big sacred type of religious events and causing problems for the people wandering around— by making noise pollution from the heavy sound systems, making people around it sick— but thinking that he is doing very religious work and this will give him great virtue, which will lead him to salvation or heaven.
Tumblr media
In the name of religion, all these people who commit hypocrisy, pretence are in deception— they are confused as to whether they are doing any religious work worth virtue. Actually, while knowing all of this, he is engaged in wrongdoing with closed eyes and it is not that he has is no feeling of it… he has it and to erase the guilt created by this feeling, they try to show that they are very religious people and continue to prove others as trivial, by making a lot of noise from personal life to social media.
What do you think are these religious people and if there is a God/Allah will he be happy with them? So by putting yourself in his place and thinking about it, maybe instead of being happy on their gimmicks, you will reel off their skin by hunter until they do not truly understand the difference between religion and Iniquity.

Modi is Douglas Jardine and Bradman rolled into one
Elections are to Narendra Modi what runs were to Sir Donald Bradman. Except, cricket was a gentleman’s game then, and there was never anything gentlemanly about politics.
Modi will do anything to win elections. He will stand tall one second, he will stoop low the next.
The airstrike on Balakot marked a big shift in India’s strategy in the fight against terror and its chief sponsor Pakistan. For the first time Indian Air Force jets crossed the line of control since 1971. But for the BJP, it wasn’t good enough. They needed to a put number to the kill, a number good enough for their 56 chaathi leader. So they said 300 terrorists killed, though the govt officially never mentioned it.
That is Modi’s style. Now endless memes and fake news videos will be circulated in the most effective election tools of our age, that is Whatsapp and Facebook.
And people generally believe whatever they get on whatsapp. 2019 could well be an election which will be decided by fake news and innuendos.
That much is evident from Modi’s statements since the air raid. He is already asking people ‘are you with us or them’, bracketing the opposition with terrorists. No one has done this before, probably no one will do later.
The opposition’s challenge is to find a leader who can pay Modi back in the same coin. Someone who can be as mean, as arrogant, as angry, and at times as witty as Modi. And that somebody must speak Hindi. Hindi heartland is where the BJP needs to be defeated if opposition fancies any chance of winning power.
What are their choices then?
Nitish Kumar was a good bet, but he chose to sleep with the enemy.
Lalu Yadav could have done it, but he is in jail.
Akhilesh Yadav has the ability, but his popularity is restricted to UP.
Kanhaiya Kumar can do it, but he is in the wrong party, and lacks stature.
You are left with Rahul Gandhi.
Rahul has many strengths. He appears sincere, has a boyish charm. He has his weaknesses too. He can’t be mean even if he wanted to. He can’t be witty, that doesn’t come naturally to him.
They are left with one person who could do the job. Priyanka Vadra. For some strange reason the Congress has restricted her to some 35 seats in UP, where they in any case don’t stand a chance to win much. Any gain the Congress makes there will only weaken the SP-BSP and help the BJP. The party is saving its brahmastra for bigger battles ahead which makes one wonder what can be a bigger fight than the Lok Sabha election.
Like I said, votes are to Modi, what runs were to Bradman.
Modi however is more than that. He doesn’t play by the rules. Modi wants to make the 2019 elections presidential. He is telling the voter, it is either me or that dimwit Rahul. To hammer this message, he can go to any extent. He will call Rahul mentally retarded, that is what he meant when he called his rival dyslexic, pardon his ignorance and insensitivity. He will call Rahul anti-national, don’t be surprised if one of these days he calls him a terrorist as well.
Whatsapp and social media have made politics as thrilling as a Twenty20 match. And just like we appreciate Virat Kohli giving it back to the Aussies, society as a whole, especially middle class, like the crass sledging Modi and his teammates indulge in.
Modi is ready to play dirty to win a match, whether it is underarm bowling or bodyline bowling. Modi is Douglas Jardine and Bradman rolled into one. Now that is a combo hard to match, tough to beat.

The Martian and The Jilted Lover
 Chapter 9
It’s not long before a routine is established. Three meals at regular times, walking Star around and for Iris, learning about old earth. It took a while but Iris can now proudly say that she knows how to operate most of the old earth tech on her own. Martha has cleaned the lab but instead of doing experiments has watched Iris learn. Most days have been uneventful according to Martha, to Iris it’s been a new experience every time a data file is opened.
Iris decided that a schedule would be the best way to not get stuck on any one subject. Day one is for entertainment subcategory tv shows followed by day two for science. Day two was more tedious for Iris. It was picking through the known, unknown, and the unbelievable. There was known information of the human body, unknown tech and procedures that aren’t used anymore, and had unbelievable theories and facts that people of old earth believed. Every science day was a gamble to dive in to, she never knew if it was going to be a fun day or a head ache. Day three is for Entertainment subcategory music and music videos, though music is played every day for Martha which can be tricky and Iris has had to use noise cancelling headphones (borrowed from Martha) on her non music days so she doesn’t get distracted and forget her task.  Day four was dedicated to the languages. Most of which were considered dead or ancient languages. On new earth there were really only a few Chinese, Spanish, English, and Hindi. Sadly with time, the other languages were forgotten. These files would help open up old texts and information that was brought during the great migration. Iris was amazed to find records of ancient texts that were ancient to old earth. Finally the last day of the schedule was day five, Arts mostly paintings and sculptures from artists long forgotten (there was some textile arts but knitting, crochet, and quilting were still common hobbies). Some of the art  made Iris feel really happy, some made her want to cry.
Other pieces just confused her and when asked  for an explanation, Martha would look, shrug, and just say, “It’s art, it’s not always meant to be understood, just appreciated.”
The only real eventful day for Martha was the day she forgot she was no longer alone and walked through the dome naked while Iris was filming her research. Martha nearly destroyed the camera to protect her nudity but Iris showed her it was deleted. After that, Martha put a little note on the inside of her door that simply read “NOT ALONE!!!”
Iris was quite happy to have Martha there, even though originally she was pretty angry about not being alone. It was really nice when she was studying and could get Martha to explain the best she was able about topics that popped up that really confused Iris.
Martha was much happier with Iris around when she remembered about her. She was so much less stressed that she was able to relax about, eat some meals that were tasty instead of just doing the smallest bit of effort, work in the garden, and occasionally jog in circles throughout the dome and climb the tree as exercise. She still didn’t speak much between forgetting she had someone to talk to and not wanting to interrupt Iris’s train of thought.
The break in the routine was two months later when Iris received her first reply back from the university. She had been waiting for this for a few days. Iris knew that with this information there would be requests for interviews, from both the scientific community and the media. She knew her teachers had to be dumb struck by her discovery. In fact in her two months on Mars, she had learned more than any doctorate scholar.
“Martha! The university's reply is in!” Iris barreled into the kitchen where Martha was making tacos. “Come on, hurry up we can eat in the common room while we watch it. I’m sure there will be lots of questions for you.”
“Okay okay, just let the meat heat up.” Martha poked at the meat chunks.
Tacos assembled, drinks grabbed, they sat on the couch with Star laying between them. Iris asked the camera to display the message.
“Hello Iris this is Detective Adrian with the New Boston Police Department. We were glad to receive your messages and will return the equipment to the college soon. I am sure you are wondering why the police are on the receiving end of your transmissions. There was a report made a few days after your alleged departure by your significant other,” the officer paused and looked down “a Jordan Lee, that you had been murdered or kidnapped by faculty of New Boston University. We were able to obtain your signed documents but that lead to the accusation that all the paperwork was forged since Jordan claimed to be the beneficiary of your life insurance policy. The university and the paperwork stated that your were on an education grant heading off world and would not be able to report back for at least a year due to the length of the trip, plus some time for the initial reports to be received. To insure there was no tampering from the school, the police department confiscated the receiver. We will hold onto the receiver for a while longer until we get your response. We need confirmation from you that you are alive and that your signature was not forged on the paperwork. Jordan has hired a lawyer to argue for all possessions and life insurance go to her in the case of off-world death. To verify that you are you and alive please include your blood type and security pin. Best regards.”

Equitable Feminism - An Important Subject for Leadership Communication
As some of you know, Leadership Communications is a subject close to my heart. While both Leadership and Communications are oceans in themselves, their overlap is no less so. In fact credible/ effective communications is increasingly seen as a vital Leadership trait. One of the important subjects that Leadership Communications needs to address is its positive portrayal of Women.
This is needed not just because it is the right thing to do. It is needed because positive reinforcement makes it easier for 'men-on-the-fence' to accept (1) the idea of a woman colleague/ boss and (2) that She could be equal/ superior to him. Of course there may still be some men who are on the other side of the fence. These initiatives may help them at least get on the fence, to begin with.
Why just men, Leadership Communication on this subject will help women too. Women plagued by self-doubt, unfair criticism, or even ridicule (some of us can stoop really low) may get a new lease of energy and enthusiasm. They may feel more open to throw their hats in the ring and explore opportunities which they otherwise may not have even considered. Thus, Communities/ Corporations/ Countries (whichever be the ecosystem) also benefit. If more women participate at various levels, these ecosystems can choose from a bigger talent pool for any role. If the said lady had not even ventured to stake her claim, the eco-system would have settled for the less than best option (male or female).
Many of us are open-minded. They can also vouch in public that that it is ability and not gender that determines what anyone can become. So we may even wonder at the necessity of the above couple of paragraphs. The reason is this. There were a couple of instances in the last few weeks that made one think whether we all are as really liberated as we may claim to be. The instances refer to both men and women and their perception/ projection/ acceptance/ reluctance to accept work as work, without giving into gender stereo-typing.
Before one gets into sharing the instances that triggered this article, it is good to understand how one defines feminism and equitable feminism. Feminism advocates equality of rights, pay, opportunity, etc. One also wishes to add the word 'equitable' and not just 'equal'. Equitable becomes necessary once we understand some differences between the genders and the accompanying strengths and limitations. To cite an example, if we need to care for the infant or the elderly (where physical strength is not relevant), it would be absolutely fair to ask for a lady nurse. Similarly, if there is some work involving 'scaffolding' a sky-scraper, it should not be amiss to insist on male assistance. Neither of these works involves some natural impossibility (like a man conceiving a child), but in these cases, it seems equitable to give preference to one gender over the other. Hence strictly speaking, not fairness is not about equality alone. Having said this, the lines are definitely blurring. Women going into space, Captaining warships etc.
Instance 1: A few days before the Indian government first announced the 21 day lock-down, I shared a post about my family's decision to ask the house maid to take paid leave at least for a few days. This was because, she could be compromising the health of her ailing husband by travelling to and fro (in light of the corona virus). One spoke about the fact that for the next few days at least, each day would be a Sunday. Each day a Sunday because, from 1st January 2020, we had decided to give the maid a weekly off, each Sunday. Yours truly would dutifully wield the broom and the mop. I received a few likes (not much). But I did not get any comment from anyone on following suit etc.
Two observations on the above. 1) Sweeping and mopping may be too infra dig to be admitting to, even if a man is actually doing it. 2) Women - even if they themselves be accomplished and successful women, who can hold their own easily in debates/ discussions in a room full of men, find it difficult to give even a day or two off to their maids. Regular weekly off to their maids is far, far away. This is because, they will need support from other members (read male members too) to action this.
Instance 2: A friend (lady) asked the men in the WhatsApp group for a thumbs up for all the women who are managing so much at home (in addition to probably, managing their office work from home). The response was discouraging. One normally receives twice or thrice more likes for a forward. This group could easily be representative of the top 1% - 2% of India's population in terms of various socio-economic indicators.
Is this an indication of the reluctance to even acknowledge contribution of women at home or is it an indication of the guilt that men are feeling about not lending enough support? One is not sure. But the feeling of the top 1% - 2% can easily percolate down to the 20% below them...and may just be a symptom of what the top 0.1% - 0.2 % actually think and do. It has taken a diktat from the SEBI for the top 1000 listed companies to progress on the representation of Independent Women Directors on their boards. The deadline given in 2018 was March end 2020 for each of the top 1000 listed companies to have at least One Independent Woman Director. As at Dec 31, 2019, more than 10% have yet to comply.
Instance 3: I talked to the lady in the above instance a few days later. She was a bit upset about the response in our group. She also shared her experience in another similar group. The group had a resident 'Peacock'. It seems he was known for his male chauvinism. She was particularly unhappy with him, because he also looked for opportunities to put others down in public. I believe she openly gave him her piece of mind. Within 24 hours, he had posted a snap of a bowl of samosas, he had himself made, fried crisply to a golden brown. I guess she also asked him whether he did all the clean up of the kitchen post the toil with oil.
Response still awaited at the time of going to press, 48 hours later. These days with the Sanjeev Kapoors and Gordon Ramsays very much in the living room through television, cooking has moved from a taboo category to an aspirational one for the Indian male. Not so much, washing dishes or sweeping/ mopping. I believe it is all a mindset. My maternal uncle, who retired as the CIO of an Indian MNC, was typically a no nonsense tough guy. But forty years ago, I have seen him sweeping floors, cutting vegetables etc. We need to realize as in a Hindi movie's dialogue. "Koi Kaam Chota ya bada nahin hotha hai! Kaam, kaam hotha hai" (No work is big or small. Work is just work). Most Indian men need to get liberated from their notions of work.
Instance 4: I saw this video (as posted below) shared by a friend (again a lady) in a WA group. Supposed to be a Quarantine Fashion Show referring to these lock down times. In itself nothing wrong. Basically a video of various middle class/ upper middle class ladies doing a lot of domestic work including, sweeping, mopping, and even car washing in various dress types..Indian/ Western etc. One only wished the fashion show depicted these ladies lounging in comfort watching their menfolk do all the work these ladies were doing. That would have been a blockbuster! But then, our men have to get more liberated. For that they just need to be intoxicated with Life, not with status, power, riches or alcohol or their chauvinistic for that matter.
In ending, one wishes to highlight the experts' view that the new models of working may extend for a long time. Companies may see that the WFH (work from home) option as a useful one in more ways than one. Today one saw a World Economic Forum video, which talks about just 5% of the jobs being of the WFH variety before (the Corona pandemic) in an evolved economy like the US. But the numbers have grown remarkably in the US and across the world.
If WFH is going to be a new normal for many lines/ kinds of work, then the concept of what is work also gets blurred. Unless the baby is fed or stops crying (whatever the cause), one cannot focus on 'work' . Also our personal values and ideas (which we may have hitherto left at home) are also being brought to Work daily. Work is Home and Home is Work. One of the uses of Leadership Communications is its potential to break mindsets, create new paradigm shift in thinking and thereby growth. Helping men and women get more comfortable with work (not stereotype it from a gender perspective) is going to be a critical effort. Thanks to World Wars I and II and a more nuclear family society, a larger portion of western men are already sharing 'home-work' with their partners. Eastern and surely Indian men have some liberation yet to achieve. We have a lot of work, big and small, left to do!

The 3 Most Polarizing Words in India, the Fascist & Terrorist Regime of Fucked-up Hindus!
“Jai Shri Ram” was meant to be a celebration of a Hindu deity. But the phrase is turning into hate speech—and a dog whistle for attacks on Muslims.
— By Snigdha Poonam| February 13, 2020 | Foreign Policy
Tumblr media
“Jai Shri Ram!” Those were the words 25-year-old Kapil Gujjar shouted as he pointed his semi-automatic pistol at hundreds of unarmed women and children at Shaheen Bagh, a predominantly Muslim colony in New Delhi, on Saturday, Feb. 1. It was a cool, smog-infused afternoon, and Indians from all walks of life had gathered in a peaceful protest against a controversial new citizenship law that especially affects the country’s poor, women, and, perhaps most of all, Muslims. Gujjar fired three bullets in the air. The crowd scattered. Later, while being handcuffed by the police, Gujjar explained his motive: “In our country, only Hindus will prevail.”
Jai Shri Ram literally translates as “Victory to Lord Ram,” a popular Hindu deity. But while this seemingly harmless phrase originated as a pious declaration of devotion in India, it is today increasingly deployed not only as a Hindu chauvinist slogan but also as a threat to anyone who dares to challenge Hindu supremacy.
Gujjar’s message was aimed at India’s 200 million Muslims —the largest religious minority in a mostly Hindu population of 1.3 billion people—who have become unwitting targets in an us-versus-them culture war waged by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The latest catalyst for tensions is the new Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), which discriminates on the basis of religion. The law grants citizenship to refugees from Afghanistan, Bangladesh, and Pakistan who are Buddhists, Christians, Hindus, Jains, Sikhs, or Zoroastrians—but not Muslims—as long as they entered India before 2015.
Jai Shri Ram is today increasingly deployed as a threat to anyone who dares to challenge Hindu supremacy.
Activists point out that the CAA goes against the secular principles enshrined in the Indian Constitution. Jai Shri Ram is today increasingly deployed as a threat to anyone who dares to challenge Hindu supremacy. And when coupled with a proposed national registry of citizens that could force people to prove their citizenship, the government’s plans could hurt the many millions of poor and illiterate Indians who don’t possess any documents to further their claims. Mass protests have seized the country’s cities and towns since the CAA was passed on Dec. 11; in scenes unprecedented in modern India, thousands of demonstrators have been forming human chains, singing the national anthem, and reading the constitution aloud. Shaheen Bagh, where hundreds of local Muslim women have staged a sit-in since the start of this year, has become the center of the national movement as more and more Indians—students, professionals, activists, singers, artists—join them every day.
Two days before Gujjar walked into Shaheen Bagh, another young man, a teenager, produced a pistol near the area and shot at anti-CAA demonstrators, injuring one and terrifying hundreds. The juvenile shooter, whom Indian law prohibits the media from naming, had apparently been prepared to become a martyr in what he perceived as a war for Hindu supremacy. In a Facebook video he recorded while on his way to Shaheen Bagh, he had left instructions for his fellow warriors: “On my final journey, cover me in saffron clothes and chant Jai Shri Ram.” The phrase has provoked terror in the capital since the beginning of this year: On the night of Jan. 5, a group of masked attackers affiliated with the Hindu far-right cried “Jai Shri Ram” as they entered Delhi’s Jawaharlal Nehru University, a hub of left-wing politics, and brutally beat up students who had been protesting against a recent fee hike.
Tumblr media
People take part in protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act and the National Register of Citizens at Shaheen Bagh in New Delhi, on Feb. 2, the day after a shooter fired on protesters there.
Ram, the popular Hindu god, is the protagonist of the Sanskrit epic Ramayana, said to be written sometime between the seventh and third centuries B.C. In modern, mainstream depictions of the Ramayana, Ram is extolled as the embodiment of the perfect man: an exiled prince who rescues his abducted wife and destroys an evil empire before returning home to assume his rightful throne. Ram is always described as just, brave, self-sacrificing, and righteous. His followers even justify the fact that he later abandoned his wife, Sita, after commoners questioned her purity—after all, they argue, Ram’s role as king superseded his duties as a husband. He was likely only following the social mores of his era.
Ram is always described as just, brave, self-sacrificing, and righteous.
In Hindi-speaking regions, Hindus have invoked Ram’s name for more than a century in regular greetings, in exclamation, and in folk songs. The deity’s political influence goes back even further. In the 12th century, a “sudden rush of temples [were] built for Ram” in response to the establishment of the first sultanate in Delhi in 1206, the journalist Shoaib Daniyal points out in Scroll.in. “In the 17th century, for example, two Marathi Ramayans were written, one which compared Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb to Raavan [Ram’s nemesis] and the other to Raavan’s gluttonous brother Kumbhakarna,” he writes.
But the phrase’s cultural relevance changed markedly in the last four decades, when it began to take on a different meaning. I first heard the words while watching the late 1980s television adaptation of Ramayana that aired on the national broadcaster Doordarshan. The program became a Sunday ritual in Hindi-speaking parts of India, and it depicted Ram as an ideal, pious man with a beatific smile—until he encountered evil, which he slew on sight. But Ram never used his special powers unless it was warranted. “Attacking the weak or the innocent to show your arrogance or your might doesn’t count as the dharma [duty] of the brave,” Ram’s spiritual mentor, Vishwamitra, advises while awarding him with celestial weapons.
Some purported followers of Ram now seem to have a different interpretation of dharma. Last year, across several incidents, dozens of poor and innocent Indians were attacked because they refused to say the words Jai Shri Ram. On June 18, a 24-year-old man was lynched in Jharkhand; on June 20, a 40-year-old cleric was hit by a car in Delhi; on June 23, a 25-year-old cab driver was beaten up in Thane near Mumbai; and on July 28, a 15-year-old boy was set on fire in Uttar Pradesh. In each of these attacks, the victims were Muslim, and they were asked to chant Jai Shri Ram by as few as three and as many as 30 Hindu assailants.
The slogan is deployed as effectively in violence as it is in entertainment. Last July, as Muslims were being forced to intone Jai Shri Ram, the country seemed gripped by a viral music video (now deleted) on YouTube titled “Jo Na bole Jai Sri Ram, bhej do usko kabristan” (Those who don’t say Jai Shri Ram, send them to their graveyards). The reference to cemeteries made clear that the message was directed at Muslims and Christians. Four people involved in making and uploading the video were later arrested. There is no stopping the messages of hate, however. On YouTube, one can now find dozens of songs glorifying Ram and denigrating minorities. Most of them mix Hindi hate speech with electronic beats. Some are so popular that they are requested at weddings and played in clubs. “Hindu Blood Hit,” for example, has been viewed more than 3.8 million times. Between psychedelic repetitions of Jai Shri Ram, the singer warns India’s Muslims that their time is up. Other viral songs can be geopolitical: “Jai Shree Ram DJ Vicky Mix” calls for a future in which “there will continue to be a Kashmir but no Pakistan.”

Arun Govil as Lord Ram and Deepika Chikhalia as Sita in Ramanand Sagar’s TV adaptation of the epic Hindu poem Ramayana.
The 1980s television show of the Ramayana reached millions of Indians right as the BJP accelerated its project to unite Hindi-speaking Hindus around the figure of Ram. This was a bold political experiment. Although widely known as the hero of the Ramayana, which has been published in multiple languages and dialects, Ram was worshipped only selectively in India. In some parts such as Tamil Nadu, his worship elicits hostility by those who see the Ramayana’s narrative as racist toward Dravidians, the ancestral inhabitants of southern India. In West Bengal, where the majority of Hindus worship the goddesses Durga and Kali, Ram’s name doesn’t resonate widely.
Ram’s imprint has spread in the years since the BJP chose him as the mascot for its project to build and cultivate a Hindu base of voters.
But Ram’s imprint has spread in the years since the BJP chose him as the mascot for its project to build and cultivate a Hindu base of voters.Ram’s imprint has spread in the years since the BJP chose him as the mascot for its project to build and cultivate a Hindu base of voters. The center for this project was the city of Ayodhya, where a 16th-century Mughal mosque occupied what some believe to be the site of Ram’s birth. Around the mid-19th century, regional Hindu organizations attempted to claim the site and build a temple to Ram on the mosque’s grounds. But then, in the 1980s, the BJP and its ideological allies turned the local demand for a Ram temple at the site into a sweeping Hindu nationalist movement. The slogan for this movement, which was led by BJP leader and then-Home Minister L.K. Advani, was Jai Shri Ram. The words were chanted, loud and clear, as the foundation for the temple was laid next to the mosque and bricks were loaded into trucks and trains headed for Ayodhya. And the same words tore through the city on Dec. 6, 1992, as thousands of Hindu volunteers pounded the mosque with hammers and axes. In a matter of hours, the building was razed; riots sparked throughout India. Jai Shri Ram now had an additional meaning: an expression of Hindu dominance and the BJP’s rise.
Last June, cries of Jai Shri Ram echoed through the Indian Parliament after the BJP was reelected with a sweeping majority, winning 303 of 543 parliamentary seats in an ugly, polarized election. The words were used to heckle Muslim legislators as they took their oaths to uphold the Indian Constitution. Five months later, India’s Supreme Court settled the country’s longest-running property dispute by ruling in favor of a Ram temple to be built in Ayodhya at the same site where the mosque was demolished by Hindu nationalists in 1992. The Muslim petitioners were granted 5 acres elsewhere in the city to build a mosque. On Nov. 9, as the government commenced arrangements for building the temple, Modi tweeted his response to the court verdict: “May peace and harmony prevail!” But those words seem lost amid the dog whistles sounded by senior leaders and amplified on social media with impunity. It is no surprise then that the devotees firing bullets at Shaheen Bagh have different intentions.

Tumblr media
Writing romantic songs and performing them is second nature for Sanam, the popular Indian band, who are headlining a special Valentine's Day concert in Dubai. "We've all enjoyed the feeling of being in love at some point in time, and this reflects in our music. So love, whether it is writing songs, or performing them, comes naturally to us and it's very easy for us to express those feelings in our music." Sanam told City Times, ahead of their Valentine's Day 2020 gig at Bollywood Parks this Friday. The concert also features Indian singer and songwriter Sanah Moidutty. The Mumbai-based band consisting of Sanam Puri (vocals), Samar Puri (guitar/vocals), Venky S. (bass guitar/vocals) and Keshav Dhanraj (drums and vocals) has come a long way since they formed a decade ago. But like many other bands, Sanam too had to resort to performing music by other artistes when looking for a break into the music world. "Actually, we started out with originals, but due to lack of adequate support from music labels, we had to resort to cover tunes. We desperately wanted to reach out to people and we thought, the best way to do it was to do songs people were familiar with. We never thought we'd get such a massive response. So that's why we switched to cover tunes, but once we connected with people we slowly started introducing our originals. Now, whenever we perform, we mix it up with originals and cover tunes, and the audience just loves us for that," said Samar. Lead vocalist Sanam Puri, who has done playback singing and worked with Bollywood composers, says he prefers to perform with Sanam because it gave him the liberty to express himself. He also enjoys connecting with the audience, especially at live performances. "Our music reaches out to a wide age group, in fact, we have some friends in Dubai who asked us if they could bring their children to our concert. We're only glad to have them because our music reaches out to youngsters too. We have observed how music in India, whether its movies or on social media, brings people together and that's what we represent through our music." Live concerts In live situations, Sanam feeds off the energy of the crowd, adds drummer Keshav. "It gives us immense satisfaction when we see a large number of people turning out for our concerts. It only goes to prove that our music is good and it has touched them enough to bring them to our gigs. You may have a million followers online, but what good is it if only a handful turn up for your concert? That's not the case with us, we have millions of online fans but we also draw sizeable crowds for our live shows." Explaining further the impact of live concerts, he said. "Whenever we go on stage we start off in a powerful manner. From there on, it's a give and take between us and the audience. Our shows are very interactive and conversational, so to speak. We believe that as artistes we must give more than 100 per cent effort because that's what will impact our performance and move audiences." This is not the first time the band has performed live here, having delivered an explosive concert when they played at the Zabeel Park Amphitheatre in 2018. "It feels great coming back to Dubai. Venky (bass guitarist) has lived in Dubai and I have lived in Muscat. So we know the region, that's why we love coming back here," said Sanam Puri. The band is popular for their interpretations of hits such as Lag Ja Gale, Gulabi Aankhen, O Mere Dil Ke Chain and Mere Mehboob Qayamat Hogi. For their Dubai concert, considering it's Valentine's Day, they have prepared a setlist that's packed with infectious romantic songs and some fun songs which they promise will get the crowd up on their feet. "Whoever is coming for our show this time, will experience something different. We have a lot of surprises planned. Though one day is not enough to encapsulate this (feeling of love). But we look at it as a festive day and to perform a live show on this day is special. It's going to be a bunch of our Valentine's Day releases on YouTube, ballads and lots of fun songs that'll keep the crowd dancing and singing along." It's not surprising to find Sanam's setlist featuring Arabic songs as a few of them grew up in the Middle East. "Samar, Sanam and I met in Muscat and played together in the school band for a few years," shared Venky, who grew up in Dubai and later moved to Muscat.  "During those years, we used to listen to a lot of popular Arabic music, so we explored that genre and discovered some tracks (the band could do). This led us to cover popular tunes by Arab artists such as Cheb Khaled, Amr Diab and Saad Lamjarred, to name a few." Online following With over 7 million online subscribers and counting, Sanam is extremely popular online. They were tagged as 'India's fastest-growing YouTube channel' in 2018. When asked if going viral could be a measure of success, Sanam Puri said, "It is by no means a measure of a good artist. Going viral doesn't necessarily mean that a song is good. For instance, you may see an odd clip on social media of two people slapping each other and it goes viral. Does that mean it's a good video? Perhaps not. Does it mean that the video is credible? No, it's only different. These days, you do anything different on social media and it goes viral, that's how it is in online business." Sanam prefers quality over virality. "Perhaps our songs have not gone viral, but they've grown (in popularity) over some time. Google did a study of our YouTube channel and they told us that our songs were rising (in numbers) over time and, the growth was impressive. The songs must be good, that's why it's attracted 7 million YouTube subscribers. But our growth has been purely organic, we have not promoted ourselves using marketing gimmicks or paid someone to boost our image. We don't believe in pushing our songs on anybody." These days, Bollywood music is heavily influenced by western pop; infusing hip-hop and rap has become a common thing. Sanam Puri, however, feels there's nothing wrong in following new trends. "Popular music in Hindi films have always had global influences, so it's no surprise that these days composers are keeping up-to-date with the most contemporary trends. I personally love adding different styles of music in my musical expressions." When asked about the challenges they face from new talent, Venky says, "It's all about being consistent. People associate us with a certain genre of music. As long as we're putting in our best efforts, we are happy. We just focus on what we do best and make sure we entertain, stay fit and are ready to perform to all kinds of crowds. That's what matters for us." Some members of Sanam are known to be hardcore foodies. When asked what they would be gorging on during their stay in Dubai, guitarist Samar Puri says, "Sanam and I love Lebanese food. We just can't wait to get our hands on some vegan stuff though, something beyond burgers." If music is the food of love, then play on Sanam!  Sanah Moidutty to sing with sanam Sanah Moidutty, who will be taking the stage alongside Sanam in Dubai on Friday, is an Indian singer and has collaborated with Sanam in two songs - Duaa and Kora Kagaz Tha Ye Man Mera. She has sung for Bollywood composers such as AR Rahman, Sachin-Jigar and Vishal-Shekhar. She has rendered her voice to films such as Always Kabhi Kabhi, Gori Tere Pyaar Mein, The Attacks of 26/11, 24, Mohenjo Daro and Meri Pyari Bindu. Her training is in Carnatic, Hindustani and Western music which has helped her immensely in her career and she can also sing in Marathi, Punjabi, Telugu, Bengali, and Kannada. Sanah's cover tunes and mixes of Malayalam songs from late 80s and early 90s has brought her much fame.  How Sanam reworks classic songs "The process starts with listening to the original version to get a proper understanding and imbibing it before rearranging the song to suit us," says Venky. "Sometimes we change the groove or the key (pitch). The instruments are adorned around the vocal melody and harmonies. We finally reach a point where we add the final touches to the arrangements and voila, we're off to shoot the music video," he adds. Rapid fire 1. Favourite music:  Pop. 2.
