Daily Instrument — Castanets
Castanets are a Spanish percussion instrument played in folkloric and classical dances. Castanets are made up of two pairs of circular concave wooden pieces connected with a cord. The cord is then hooked around the players fingers and the castanets are then closed together, producing a sound. The higher pitched castanet out of the two are called hembra, and the lower pitched castanet is called macho.

A year of hard times and some good fortune rolls to a close.
Twenty-twenty-two had its share of dark days. Weeks too. Months? Yeah. (Thinking now of so many funerals.)
Of course you can't anticipate the big stuff like losing friends, but I'm making plans for 2023 in the name of having an easier go. Gentleness, fair treatment, and patience to everyone I meet. Time spent doing normal things and not writing. A lot of work outside here on the farm. A lot more sun and clean air.
I plan to be social and stay out of the cave. Go places and walk around. At least one great tour, hopefully more. Fresh food, water, the sea, night drives, big dinners, strenuous life in a healthy way. Also, sweet, nourishing, good quiet or wild times spent with those I love. (Most importantly. I want the wild and I want the good quiet.)
As my late, great friend Ray sang, "No more a mole in the ground or a bear in the winter/Let it be broken glass and bones/Let it be scratches and stitches and splinters"

Raymond Raposa, aka Castanets, Dies at 41
- “He was a bright star, a good friend and a great musician,” Sufjan Stevens says
Raymond Raposa, the musician who recorded and performed as Castanets, has died at 41.
Sufjan Stevens’ Asthmatic Kitty Records announced Raposa’s death July 30 with a statement from his family. No cause was given.
“It is with great sorrow that the family of Raymond Raposa announce his passing today,” it said. “Raymond was a wonderful son, brother, uncle, friend and musician. He will be greatly missed.”
Raposa released six albums as Castanets. He also recorded as Raymond Bryon, releasing Bond Wire Cur in June.
Stevens remembered Raposa as “a bright star, a good friend and a great musician.
“It was always such a joy and a fierce spiritual journey to work with him,” Stevens wrote on Tumblr. “Heavy hearts and deep sorrows over here. Ray, may your soul glimmer brightly on the other side. And may perpetual light shine upon you.”

Escovedo Sends Me Back Through My Music Years with Forthcoming Echo Dancing LP
Occasionally I enjoy looking back on the foundations of what’s made me pursue music so rabidly and what’s made it become such a fixed part of my existence for so many years. And, without question, one of those early tentpoles is none other than veteran singer-songwriter Alejandro Escovedo.
When I was around 15 or 16 years old, I received my first iPod and began…
