Legends and myths about trees
Celtic beliefs in trees (26)
I for Idho (Yew) - December 21st Winter Solstice
“Death of a king in his waning 6 months - The Celtic Tree Calendar (Ref), the end of the beginning, the beginning of the end ...”
Colour: dark green; Star: Saturn; Gemstone: olivine; Gender: female; Metal: lead, Element: earth; Patron: Banba, Hecate; Symbols: resurrection, death + rebirth, eternity, path to meet ancestors + land of the soul
Today is the winter solstice, also called the hibernal solstice, the day in the northern hemisphere when the sun is at its lowest altitude in the south and day is shortest and night longest during the year (reversed in the southern hemisphere).
Yew is an evergreen tree with dark green leaves and red berries. The yew is a robust tree with a thick girth and an extremely long life. It is probably the longest lived of all trees.
As soon as the downward reaching branches reach the ground, the tree begins to grow strongly, as if it has been reborn as a new tree. The eldest living yew tree is in Europe is said to be the Fortingall Yew, in Perthshire, Scotland, and it has been estimated between 3000 to 9000 years old.
In addition, the yew's hollowed-out heartwood, especially when wet, looks like a flayed animal, and when cut it appears to bleed, so the yew is increasingly said to be a sacred tree. Yew sticks were believed to be able to divine the future, and yew sticks were used as 'writing pillars' to engrave the Ogham script, as they could be preserved almost forever.
As the druids believed the natural law of reincarnation, where the soul becomes reborn as another person, the yew was seen as a protector of the soul during the journey to the Otherworld. Some believe that the road to the Otherworld is shaded by rows of yew trees. Furthermore, the yew is said to stop any obstacles caused by evil spirits from the other world.
As a sacred 'tree of immortality', believed to protect and purify the dead, yews are often planted in cemeteries, many of which are as old as the church or much older.

is there any source on Samhain being the beginning of the new year, or is that just made up? I've heard it's disputed
OOOH EXCELLENT QUESTION!
Ok so it is widely considered to be the equivalent of the celtic new year (I myself believe it likely was, but that concept might not have held the same kind of significance for them that it does for us but that's a discussion for another day)
In the late 1800s John Rhys put forward that Samhain would be the celtic new year based on a passage of Julius Caesar accounts of the Gualish
the Celts reckoned Dis the father of all and regarded darkness and death as taking precedence over light and life. So in their computation of time, they began with night and winter and not with daylight and summer. This is probably the key to reckoning years as winter.
This point has been disputed on apparently two different grounds; firstly, that it would be 'absurd ' for the dark parts of the year to be cosmically more important to the 'Celts' (I'm using the umbrella here for simplicity) than the light, food producing, half (which strikes me as incredibly audacious to assume that one cultures perceptions of the world should apply to another). The second argument seems to be based on the fact that Bealtaine is often a time of arrivals in the mythology. The Tuatha arrive on Ireland's shores on this date and many important figures are born on or near this time, but I think an equal argument for important events happening on Samhain can be made which makes this point moot at best.
So back to the question at hand, aside from Julius' account, as far as I'm aware we don't have any explicit statements from antiquity to say that the 'dark half' was the beginning of things, but it is universally accepted that the 'Celts' started their days at sunset. This doesn't take a wild logical leap then to assume they also started their year so. Emily Lyle notes this also in her paper "The Starting-Points in the Coligny Calendar."
Prehaps the most interesting theory, though, is that EACH HALF of the year consisted both independently and together, making Samhain and Bealtaine BOTH "new years." Which is more or less Lyle's conclusion to her paper discussing the Coligny Calendar.

March 2023 Moon Phases, Spring Equinox, and More Astronomy

This month, there are many Geocentric Conjunctions to view as well as the passage of time into Spring. The Vernal Equinox occurs on March 20th, 2023, marking the First Day of Spring in the Northern Hemisphere. Tomorrow, March 2nd, there will be a double Geocentric Conjunction! Astrophotographers and amateur astronomers alike can catch both Mercury and Saturn together while Venus and Jupiter are also in conjunction. Later this month, Mars is in conjunction with the First Quarter Moon. I am sure there will be lots of great pictures of that!
On March 20th, the Sun crosses the Celestial Equator once again, following its Ecliptic Path across the sky. This point is called the Vernal, or Spring Equinox. The Axial Tilt of the Earth is now parallel to the Sun, so that our planet is neither tilting towards or away from the Sun. This results in approximately equal hours of night and day, giving the Equinox its name.

Oh great witchstorian, I bring to you an offering of tea and coffee and the promise of "I owe ya one" in return for an answer to a question of mine:
Do you know what that big deal about "Celtic astrology" is? Which group did it come from? Where's the rest of the context necessary to understand it? Or was it created recently and then applied backwards?
~Jasper from @jasper-pagan-witch
Ohhhhh THAT.... -claps on the hat-
Okay so, here's the thing. The ogham letter calendar? That exists. We have evidence of it dating back to the single-digit CE years. That's just how some Celtic peoples marked their year.
The Celtic Tree Calendar setup we see today, particularly the mapping of the tree calendar onto a "zodiac," is an entirely modern invention. It was invented by Robert Graves, yet another contribution to modern paganism from his novel, The White Goddess. (Honestly, I don't know how anyone can look down their nose at pop culture paganism when so much of Wicca and nondenominational paganism based upon Wicca can trace its' roots - pun fully intended - back to fiction and poetry from the 1940s.)
Graves was one of those people who was REALLY into trying to figure out what the ancient Druids were up to, and he made an attempt to figure that out by charting the mythology of Ireland, England, and certain parts of mainland Europe and the Middle East. One of the theories he put forward in The White Goddess was this idea of a tree calendar that more or less followed the same model as the Greek zodiac we're all familiar with from our daily horoscopes.
Now, witches, pagans, and New Agers just LOVE a good zodiac, and while there are many ways of casting a horoscope or calculating a birth chart, the systems do not always overlap or work in the same ways. But since when have details mattered when you can have a tree instead of a constellation for your birth sign, or a "Native American Moon Zodiac" infographic that just looks so cool and free-spirit-y on your Facebook page?
So yeah. When you see anything referring to a "Celtic tree calendar" that presents the idea as an astrological system? Completely modern invention.
Is it fun? Absolutely. Is it a neat thing we can do if we want? Sure.
Is it real in the sense of being created or used as an astrological device by pre-Christian Celtic pagans? Not even remotely.
Hope this answers your question!

Legends and myths about trees
Celtic beliefs in trees (24)
Ss for Straif (Blackthorn) - Samhain/Hallowe'en, opening the veil between this world and the spirit world…
“Mother of the Forest – The Celtic Tree Calendar (Ref), The Beginning of Winter”
Colour: red; Star: Mars, Saturn; Gemstone: black opal; Gender: female; Patron: Morrigan; Symbol: inevitability of death, protection + revenge, discord + insidiousness
Blackthorn forms vigorous young trees from the roots, from which dense, thorny bushes grow in dense clumps. Armed with sharp thorns, which can damage human skin. It already starts flowering in early spring, at the beginning of March, and with the onset of winter it produces black berries, commonly known as 'sloes'.
Samhain is the most important festival in the Celtic world, celebrated on 1st November to mark the beginning of winter and therefore the new year. The name 'Samhain' means 'end of summer'. The seasons change from summer to winter (the time of the dead) with this festival. It is a period of short days and darkness, but it is a necessary period for nature to enter a peaceful rest and welcome the bright spring. In the calendar of agricultural societies, this is an important stage for the germination of crop seeds.
Samhain was the solemn festival, when fires were lit and sacrifices were offered to gods such as Taranis and Teutates. Importantly, it was believed that on the eve of this day, 31 October, a passage between this world and the spirit world was opened, allowing inhabitants from the other world to come and visit this world freely and interact with humans in this world. However, while the comings and goings were sometimes favourable, it was also envisaged to be dangerous.
On the Samhain eve, children went from house to house to collect festive offerings. It was also customary to celebrate Samhain by placing a brightly burning candle inside a hollowed-out turnip at the entrance to the house.
Blackthorn is a tree traditionally used for black magic and witchcraft, and its thorns remind us of our own insidious roots. We must remember that we hurt ourselves and others in many ways. If we think about how to avoid hurting each other and courageously face our own insidious roots, blackthorn can guide us to overcome this dark side of our human nature and help us to return the debts of our hearts.
It also helps us to accept the fact that death is something from which no one can escape.

celtic tree calendar
According to the Celtic faith, humans were created from trees.
Each birth date can be attributed to one of 21 species of trees. These in turn decipher the character of those born that day.
