Denji can fool us into thinking he hasn’t changed a ton with his attitude and abrasive demeanor, but it’s stuff like this that makes me insane over his character growth/development when it comes to expressing concern.
Our boy went from this:
To this:
Denji’s regrets are constantly pushed to the side, and I don’t believe for a second that he doesn’t tell himself that it’s not worth dwelling on them. I mean, he has to have times of wondering if Aki and Power both knew how important they were to him. That maybe he should have been nicer to Aki, when Aki civilized him, and after the friction between them settled, made Denji feel like a human again. That he should have let Power know he loved her, since she craved affection in ways she never said. I mean, he doesn’t even deny that Yoshida is his friend here, when he’s called him a stalker and weirdo the whole time. It’s like, Denji has quietly learned that he can’t take people for granted, but he’s still having trouble implementing that idea into his behavior. His growth is so subtle outside of the major depression he is in, but it’s there and it’s both heartbreaking and fascinating.
