"Darlin deserved to be a villain" "Freelancer deserved to be a villain"
You know who deserved to be a villain??
Lovely. Lovely deserved to be a villain. And the fact that they weren't should be appreciated by everyone.
Why?
Because Lovely could've very easily turned into Quinn. Like so easily that it's a little scary.
Seriously, think about it. Lovely had a lot of issues after Adam and the inversion and all of it was because of Vincent. If at any point they had decided that Vincent wasn't shit and they deserved better than whatever insanity this man would bring, we would've gotten a second Quinn.
Someone bitter and angry at how loving one person fucked up their entire life. Someone hellbent on making sure he could never hurt anyone else the way he hurt them. Someone who kept others out of Vincent's hurricane by making sure they never stepped in it at all. Through manipulation or murder, that's up to you.
"But that doesn't sound like Lovely! They're too sweet for that! They'd never turn out that way even if they did turn evil." And? Quinn's entire reasoning for going after Darlin was because they betrayed him. I'm not saying he wasn't a garbage person but I am saying characters have done worse for less.
Lovely deserved to be hurt. To be angry. To leave in a violent storm and pay back the world for what it did to them in a shower of blood and broken promises. And I have no doubt they would've.
But they didn't. Because Lovely is trusting, forgiving, a little naive for the situation they're in, and completely in love.
If Lovely was a little more attentive to their circumstances or a little less in love with Vincent, they'd see that this relationship has brought just as much trauma as pleasure and that going forward with it will destroy them.
Then see above.
Lovely deserved to be a villain. Hell, I'm willing to believe they should've been. But they weren't. And nobody seems to see it.
(Now don't let the entire post of me dunking on him fool you, I love Vincent, he's the first Redacted character I listened to. But like...facts are facts)

God I’m reading “check and mate” by Ali Hazelwood, and I know that this is her first YA novel…..but like, I’m in love? There’s this scene where the main girl’s mentor gives her a lecture about not quitting chess, and tells her about her past…where she was discriminated against by her peers. Where Kasparov, one of the biggest chess players of all time…..said that “WoMeN ArE ToO STupID fOr ChEsS” , and how discouraging it was for girls everywhere. The boys in her class wore shirts saying “a female chess player is an oxymoron”. That is so disrespectful, it would have ended me. I hate it so much.
And I’m like, crying…sobbing , because that’s the case for girls in almost every male dominated field. I’m currently pursuing an engineering degree….and all throughout my schooling I was made to feel like an outsider, like I was imposing my self on this “old boys club”, like I was never good enough. Us girlies would always be left out in group projects, because guys didn’t want to associate themselves with girls. Like we were the plague somehow. It happened so much that my performance started going down and I started believing that I didn’t belong here. But no more. I won’t let them bully me into quitting. 40% of women in STEM leave their careers after 10-15 years because of a hostile work environment. I don’t want to be in that statistic. I’ll do everything I can to encourage girls my age to take up math and science. I’m so tired of this patriarchal bullshit.

“No need to hold back, Mal. He’s a big boy. Whatever you’ll dish out, Nolan can take it.” Her smile is faint. “He probably wants it.”

✩♟️💕Review:
*Thanks to @penguinteen and @ever-so-ali for providing me with an ARC in exchange for an honest review*
Who knew Ali Hazelwood would be the one to get me interested in chess?!
“Check & Mate” follows Mallory Greenleaf, a former chess player working as a mechanic to support her family. Eager to leave the sport and the destruction it caused in the past, she plays one last charity tournament. Only, she manages to beat Nolan Sawyer, the current world champion and bad boy of chess. What follows is the opportunity to continue playing for sorely needed cash prizes and cross pawns with her fiercely attractive competitor. That is, so long as she can protect her family from the game that wrecked it.
I want to begin by saying that I agree reviewers that are saying that this book is new adult and NOT young adult. The characters are 18 and 20. Mature language is used. Sexual content is referenced. Please keep these factors in mind before reading.
Considering that this is an NA debut, Hazelwood is successful in branching out into this space. I adored Mallory, Nolan, and their rivals-to-lovers romance. The pacing of their relationship contributes to the ease with which I tore through this book. I feel like Mallory and Nolan truly started out as competitors too absorbed in their rivalry to entertain the idea of a relationship before finally giving in to their attraction. I devoured every single page.
I also really loved the depth of the characters in this book! As the eldest child in my own family, I really connected to Mallory and the pressure she feels to take on more responsibilities, set an example for her younger siblings, and step in as another parent of sorts.
As with her other books, Hazelwood explores the ways women are treated in male-dominated spaces. In this case, she does so by putting the chess world under a microscope. Going into the book, I knew next to nothing about chess, but Hazelwood made it easy to understand and digestible. It just worked and now I feel empowered to try my hand at it.

Post-game DE scenario that I think is very funny and am surprised I have not seen any one else write about is if Kim is like "no no, we can't, we're ~colleagues~" and then like 5 years later theyre actively being shot at in like, a high stakes revolution scenario, and Harry's like "so I was thinking this really seems more like a brothers in arms type of situation. to me." and Kim is like "you know what, sure, that's a completely arbitrary distinction that I'll buy into at this point"

Okay but hear me out. I relate to Andrew (minyard) so heavily with the way he views exy. like i don't get Olympic sports or sports at all really because what is the point. so much is out of your control and frankly it doesn't mean anything.
ironically tho. I do have a kryponite, the same one that Neil and Kevin have, the same one, that if you , allow yourself to touch after it being dormant, you'll find it being the forefront of all your waking thoughts until it feels like it's the only thing worth doing.
chess. now. i've known I love chess since queen's gambit came out. (i've played chess previously but was never exposed to it being more than just a board game you keep in the basement). I've been looking into chess for 2 years hedging on the edge of just doing the damn thing, actively playing, actively seeking out tournaments, and not.
anyway I started to read Ali Hazelwood's book Check and Mate (the only book I've ever read by her) and it's like i set off a fucking bomb in my brain. because I'm chugging through this book like I'm in middle school desperately looking for an escape. because all I want is to listen to people talk about chess the way I feel about chess. and they are a lot. obvi not the main plot but that's what I can't get enough of.
Anyway anyway I started playing chess in my head so chess is a disease and I finally bought the travel chess board I've been eying for two years refusing to let myself buy it despite it being 10 fucking dollars.

Wenclair ✨SUPREMACY✨
Mind you, I am NOT shitting on other ships or anything. Everyone is entitled to their opinion and we have to respect it. However…. Just look at the number of the works on each relationship tag….
Tumblr media
I mean, cool for them? 245 is a good number, I’m actually thrilled there wasn’t more. I certainly was expecting more. A pleasant surprise.
Tumblr media
….. I am not surprised, the fan base of those two isn’t well developed yet and their interactions were certainly one sided so…. Kinda feel sorry for them, might have something to do with the pity I have for Xavier.🤷🏻‍♀️
Tumblr media
Nothing to say, only one word.
