Eastward

So 2022 has been awesome for the indie games scene and Eastward by Pixpil and published by Chucklefish is most definitely not a break from form! I was exposed to Eastward pretty early on after its announcement and I knew I would have to check it out because the vibe is just so for me. As per my usual, I didn't look up release dates or anything so I promptly forgot about the game and was only reminded about it right before it came out day-in-date on Game Pass. But I am really glad I ended up checking it out anyway!

First impressions:

The things that really drew me in for this game is the art style (I love a good pixel art aesthetic), and the music. When I finally was able to install the game, the intro cinematic blew me away! The awesome character designs come to life through the animation, and the action and story elements are displayed beautifully. The biggest part that sold me here is the music. The opening track by composer Joel Corelitz, called "Eastward," is going to be in nearly every playlist of mine forever. And if the art and music weren't enough, the beginning of the game really takes off in a very appealing and eventually quite gripping way.

Why you might want to check it out:

I would recommend this game to almost anybody. The main appeal is its simplicity. It’s not trying to do a million things and I think that is really working for it. Since Pixpil spent their time focused on story and art rather than adding extraneous mechanics and side quests, Eastward becomes an exciting and cinematic experience. Another awesome selling point for it is some surprisingly good boss fights! I usually find boss fights in this presentation to be passable to bad, but Pixpil has really innovated and created some new experiences that really shows off what is possible in a top-down, 2D, pixel art style. Finally, the best reason to check it out is that it is included in Gamepass which means a that it’s basically free.

So please do yourself a favor and at least play the opening hours of Eastward. If you do, let me know because I haven’t seen much talk about this and it is disappointing!

Vlog - Starbound isn't dead

I'll also link this video since it explains, in better ways and in greater detail than I ever could, more of what happened to Starbound and why it became what it became. Absolutely necessary viewing IMO if you're a Starbound fan.

This was another video inspired by some posts on r/starbound lamenting the supposed death of Starbound. The reality is... It's far from dead. Yeah, it's true that the game's developers, Chucklefish, haven't released any updates for it since 2019. It's even possible that no one at Chucklefish is currently working on Starbound. BUT... The community's been carrying the game on its back for years. There are a few multiplayer servers that are still surprisingly active, with decent player counts. The modding scene remains crazy active, with usually a few new mods released per day. Places like the Starbound subreddit and Discord server remain pretty active. Weirdos like me keep making content about the game - videos, fanart, and so on. Even discounting the community, Starbound is, first and foremost, a single player game. It's not a live service. Not an alpha or a beta, and not in early access (even if Starbound was better in those days). Not something like Minecraft that gets perpetually updated. It's... a finished product. A complete game, for better or worse, one with a multiplayer element. I'm sure Chucklefish sees it that way. I know I said much of this in the video, but screw it.

What I didn't say in the video was this: The biggest flaw with Starbound is a complete lack of direction, made even worse by the unpaid labor and worker exploitation issues that came to light in 2019 and the lead dev, Tiy, being absolutely incompetent. Much of what made Starbound so good in its early access days (race-specific traits and gear, interesting lore, etc.) got jettisoned with 1.0 and subsequent updates, replaced by... a terrible story mode and a boatload of padding, among other things. Seriously, I think I've messed with things like the fossil minigame and the bounty hunter stuff ONCE. Like, EVER.

Despite everything I said here and in the video, I'm still a Starbound fan... one who knows how much a mess its development was, how much of a mess the game itself is, and how much the community is keeping it alive.
