Common stinkhorn (Phallus impudicus)
This is the first time I've actually found these infamous fungi by following the scent! They smell powerfully of rotten meat, a feature designed to attract flies (you can see a couple very much enjoying it in the first photo), who eat the gleba - the dark sticky substance that covers the cap. Some of it will stick to the flies, and this is how the mushroom's spores get spread.
They emerge from eggs which, when gathered early enough, are edible, but predictably disgusting tasting.

FOTD #069 : common stinkhorn! (phallus impudicus)
the common stinkhorn is a fungus in the phallaceae family (the stinkhorns). it is widespread across the world, & is thought to form mycorrhizal associations with trees - especially conifers.
the big question : can i bite it?? the edibility is "not recommended" (likely due to its foul stench & slimy texture), although some parts of france & germany eat the immature fungus !!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
p. impudicus description :
"the mature stinkhorn is 10 to 30 cm (3.9 to 11.8 in) tall & 4 to 5 cm (1.6 to 2.0 in) in diameter, topped with a conical cap 2 to 4 cm (0.8 to 1.6 in) high that is covered with the greenish-brown slimy gleba. in older fungi the slime is eventually removed, exposing a bare yellowish pitted and ridged (reticulate) surface."

It's not Funguary, but I was bored and decided to draw mushrooms from photos, most of which I had saved for the challenge
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I'm planning to draw mushrooms that match my OCs, but I haven't decided yet how this will be done (You may have seen one of them for 21 days with Giant Puffball)

Elegant stinkhorn 》 Mutinus elegans
A new-to-me species of stinkhorns!! These guys go by many common names including dog stinkhorn, headless stinkhorn, and the devil's dipstick.
When I found them they were quite damaged. You can see the remains of its slimy spore mass coating the stalk and a couple of immature eggs waiting to emerge. As with most (if not all) fungi in the Phallaceae family, its gleba is gelatinous and foul-smelling, a feature which serves to attract flies and other insects that feed upon the gleba, thus aiding in spore dispersal.

The common name for these mushrooms is stinkhorn, because they emit smells that are stinky and attractive to flies to help spread spores. I don't know the exact species, but, you guys...
The fucking genus name for these shrooms is Phallaceae. As in there's an entire genus of mushrooms named after dicks. Penises.

What's your favorite mushroom:
to eat
aesthetically
that absolutely horrifies you
🎤
What a wonderful ask to wake up to!
To Eat; You can never go wrong with the classic Button Mushroom, you can find them in just about any grocery store, and are in fact technically baby mushrooms to the larger Portobello Mushroom Very yummy, I love them, especially on pizza <3
Aesthetically; I love what is called the Tippler's Bane / The Ink Cap Mushroom! It is technically edible as well, but never with alcohol. Otherwise, it is deadly poisonous!! It's a very pretty looking mushroom, and yes, you could make actual ink from them, though it would turn out a bit of a light shade of grey.
That Absolutely Horrifies Me; Thank you for making me remember the existence of Devil's Fingers / The Octopus Stinkhorn. Not a poisonous fungi to eat, however it smells god awful and looks like a miniature portal to hell opened up and has sent demon tentacles to come claim your soul.
Though to add onto this one, I will also mention the Destroying Angel mushroom cause god damn, it is one of the most toxic mushrooms you could ever eat, and it gets mistaken for a common edible mushroom, all the time. For this reason, they were also given the name "Fool's Mushroom".

🤔
Guessing the name isn't as obvious as it looks.
Tbh it does look like Phallus impudicus aka common stinkhorn (or at least one of Phallales sp.). A lot of mushrooms have their "phallic stage", but this guy's stipe has that pore-like texture that tells me it's a phallus indeed.

I'm playing in a DND campaign where the political enemy worships a mushroom god. I'm playing a warlock so I obviously have my own patron god etc. What things can I call the mushroom worshippers to really make them feel bad? In short, I'm looking for mushroom slurs, so I came to the only expert I know of. Any ideas at all would be amazing. Thank you!
so this was rotting in my inbox for over a week & i told my boyfriend about it . he replied "uh common stinkhorn,, it's like calling them basic & stinkie :-3"
we have no ideas- maybe a commenter can help?

Funguary 2024 Day 21
🍜 Week 3: Edible 🍚 Calvatia gigantea aka Giant puffball
Tumblr media
Today, without humanization, for some reason I wanted this mushroom to look exactly like this. I also didn't know if it was important to choose a specific mushroom (like Common Puffball), but I chose Giant Puffball because it's cool.
