Your Divorced Zukka playlist is so inspired! I can absolutely see the story it builds. What are some of your favorite lyrics that drive the narrative?
Thanks so much! This is probably way more than you asked for but I'm just going to go through all the songs right now hehe
So they get together after the war and they fall fast and hard and it's so good but also they're super codependent. Maybe it is a little toxic, because they're young and stupid and busy
Had another talk about where it's going wrong But we're still young We don't know where we're going But we know where we belong
When I run out of road You bring me home
All you can say All you can feel Was wrapped up inside that one perfect kiss
And it just doesn't work. They end up hurting each other a lot. It falls apart and they agree to end this thing to save each other from more pain
I'm not the only one who's hurting here I don't know what the hell is left to do
But I could never rescue you No matter how I tried All I could do was love you hard And let you go No matter how I tried All I could do was love you
There's the initial pain and heartbreak and anger of a fresh breakup
Trust that you betrayed, confusion that still lingers You took everything I loved and crushed it in between your fingers
My undying love, now I hold it like a grudge And I hear your voice every time that I think I'm not enough
And I know in my heart, hurt people, hurt people And we both drew blood, but, man, those cuts were never equal
Coming around to forgiveness and acceptance and reminiscing... And maybe hope that things might even work out in the future?
The last time I felt your weight on my chest, you said "We didn't get it right, but love, we did our best" And we will again
Shadows of us are still dancin' In every room, in every hall
And that slowly turns into this decades-long era of pining longing and being like "I still love you and think about you and hope you think about me but I could never be selfish enough to try to get back with you because it's better for you this way" but also I mean yeah those feelings are still so mixed.
They see each other every now and then in a professional capacity and it hurts so much and it feels so weird but they just gotta Be Cool
Yeah, you think you got away But I'm in the trees, I'm in the breeze My footsteps on the ground You see my face in every place
I saw you at a party, said hello like an old colleague
I still got it bad 'Cause you've got what you had And I still want it
Do you think I'd give up? That this might've shook the love from me
Now that it's done There's not one thing that I would change My life was a storm since I was born How can I fear any hurricane?
(and I swear to god every single lyric in Francesca is equally as amazing)
Maybe they hook up a couple of times but that doesn't change anything, they still know being together would be a terrible idea
And I know we're done, and I know we're through But God when I look at you My brain goes, "Ah"
Yes, I know that he's my ex, but can't two people reconnect? "I only see him as a friend," the biggest lie I ever said
That was NOT a good idea, and the longing and pining builds... And OH SHIT maybe they both feel the same way about each other? And maybe it wouldn't be so bad after all to be together? They've been so miserable for so long... Maybe they're starting to think about things they wish they could say to each other... BUT WILL THEY??
You know the distance never made a difference to me...
Do you know, I could break beneath the weight Of the goodness, love, I still carry for you
It ain't the being alone It ain't the empty home, baby You know I'm good on my own You know, it's more the being unknown And there are some people, love, who are better unknown
Do I wanna know? If this feeling goes both ways?
FINALLY they confess and it's like the floodgates are open and yes they are old and they've missed so much time together but they never stopped loving each other and now they're READY to love each other and wow suddenly they feel like teenagers again...
But after this I'm never gonna be the same And I am never going back again
Like I lived my whole life Before the first light

50 for zukka pls 👀💕
50. A kiss, followed by more that trail down the jaw and neck.
Zuko is aware of every point of contact between him and Sokka: Sokka’s leg between his own, Sokka’s chest against his, one of Sokka’s steady hands on his waist, his other hand cupping Zuko’s jaw and tilting his head to create the perfect angle for the most important point of contact.
Sokka’s lips taste like salt and the watermelon juice he wanted with dinner, and he smells so good, his skin so warm with the two of them so close. Every kiss is like the first one they shared earlier that evening: firm but still a bit gentle, purposeful and passionate. Zuko feels a little light-headed from being on the receiving end of this much direct care and attention from Sokka. Or maybe it’s the lack of oxygen making him light headed?
Nah. Zuko is pretty sure Sokka just has that effect on him.
Their lips part and Zuko is about to suggest they actually go inside his room instead of stopping every ten feet to kiss against the wall, but Sokka’s lips are still moving, pressing sweet kisses along Zuko’s jaw and trailing lower, each kiss leaving Zuko’s skin tingling. Zuko’s mind is wiped clean of all rational thought and his hands grip tighter on Sokka’s waist.
He hears someone clearing their throat and it takes a second for him to realize that it wasn’t him or Sokka. His eyes widen in horror and his entire body tenses up as his head turns to the side. Sokka follows his line of sight and they find themselves in an awkwardly silent staredown with the two Kyoshi Warriors stationed outside of Zuko’s rooms for the night.
“Agni,” Zuko mutters, then speaks up louder for the Warriors to hear. “Uh, you two are dismissed for the night. Thank you.”
At their apprehensive looks, Sokka adds, “Don’t worry, ladies. I’ll keep an eye on him tonight.”
The Warriors look at each other and nod, turning around in unison and leaving them alone. Zuko groans in embarrassment and hides his face in Sokka’s chest until the sound of their footsteps disappears.
“We are never talking about this again,” Zuko says weakly. “This is officially the most embarrassing day of my life.”
“Which was more embarrassing, forgetting about the warriors that are literally outside your room every single night, or the part during our private, candlelit dinner when you thought I was confessing my love for Ambassador Hashi and not for you?”
Zuko sighs. “I had hoped you forgot about that after we started kissing.”
“Unfortunately, we have stopped kissing, so it’s all coming back to me now. We could fix that, you know. The thing about us not kissing. But maybe we should get out of the open hallway first?”
“You just offered to guard my rooms, now you’re fishing for an invite inside?” Zuko teases.
“I mean, if you’d prefer, I can stay in the hallway all night,” Sokka says, his hand running up and down Zuko’s sides. “All alone.”
Zuko grabs his hand and leads them to the door. “I have a better idea.”

Cabin Leader Zukka AU
Credit to @im-a-sokka-for-you, @waywarddork, @king-bumi-for-president, @sokkaseboyhair, and @crying-at-ikea for helping out with this monstrosity of a post!! Stupid Squad™ ily ❤️
This is long af but I promise it’s worth it 🥺🥺
Sokka and Zuko are rival cabin leaders at a summer camp
The camp has sort of a 4-elements theme because I say so
Eight Cabins. Two Water-Themed, two Fire Themed, two Earth-Themed, and Two Air-Themed.
Sokka leads the Southern Water Cabin. Yue the Northern. Aang leads one of the Air Cabins, and Suki leads an Earth Cabin. Zuko and Ty Lee lead the Fire Cabins. (Ty Lee shamelessly flirts with the assistant camp director, Mai...)
Sokka and Zuko’s cabins, along with all the other cabins, are competing in the yearly camp competition. There are different challenges, like water balloon fights (water), mud runs (earth), zip lining (air), and s’more roasting (fire).
Zuko’s cabin wins most years, and Sokka’s like “not this year. This year WE take the trophy” and he’s got his heart set on it.
Sokka thinks Zuko’s obnoxious. He sees him as hot-headed and snippy and arrogant. And he’s almost militaristic with his cabin kids. (And yet they love him. Even more annoying.)
Sokka wants to be the ✨fun cabin✨, he usually does, but he starts pushing harder to advance to the next round of the competition and win.
Sokka and Zuko have multiple confrontations. They’re snarky and sarcastic “good luck out there😈” kind of things (which Sokka HATES)
The two cabins pull pranks on each other all the time. Very Parent-Trap-esque. Sokka and Zuko plan a lot of them, but that doesn’t stop the kids from doing a few on their own (I imagine some very lovable OC campers).
Sokka wakes up with a shaving-cream beard more than once.
Zuko wakes up wearing makeup once...
Then, as the story unfolds with whatever subplots a writer may put in, Sokka catches more and more glimpses of Zuko acting more human... and hey... Zuko’s sort of sweet when he’s like that...
No. This is a competition. Zuko bad. Winning good.
Sokka confides in Aang and Yue one night after a staff meeting.
“You don’t understand, guys! He’s—he’s infuriating! He’s good at everything, and the kids all like him, and I know I’m supposed to hate the guy but I don’t anymore! And I don’t know why! And part of me feels like he deserves to win every damn time even thought it’s ridiculous that he does-”
“Sokka.”
Aang looks at him almost sympathetically. Sokka tilts his head in confusion.
“Have you considered that maybe you just have a little crush on him?”
“WHAT?!”
“...”
“Oh. Shit.”
Anyway Sokka has a bit of an awakening and is like “OH NO I LIKE ZUKO I’M SUPPOSED TO HATE ZUKO.”
After panicking about that for way too long, Sokka winds up telling Suki about this revelation and Suki is like:
“Well... I don’t know if I should be telling you this, but I think Zuko’s had a crush on you for years.”
“WHAT THE FUCK.”
Suki sort of awkwardly admits that she’s picked up on it. She and Zuko are friends (something Sokka could never fathom why but he left it be) and she tells Sokka how Zuko talks about him... an absurd amount. And how Zuko, on more than one occasion, has accidentally called Sokka cute.
(i.e “just because he’s Mr. Cute and Friendly doesn’t mean he can walk around like he owns the place!” “You think he’s cute?” “What? Uh-”)
Leading up to the final face off where Zuko and Sokka’s cabins will compete against each other, Sokka leaves his campers with Suki for a few minutes and approaches Zuko’s cabin one night and asks to speak with him. Alone.
There’s a unanimous “oooooooooooh!” from the campers.
The two step outside, and Sokka’s freaking out, but he’s gonna do it anyway.
He’s really awkward about it and keeps beating around the bush.
“Just get to the point, Sokka!!”
“Um. Do you like me?”
That. Was not what he meant to say.
In all honesty, Sokka meant to say that he likes Zuko, and THEN ask him if he liked him back, but he panicked, give the guy a break.
Zuko’s face goes completely blank.
“Wait, what?”
Sokka, now suddenly convinced he and Suki were wrong, chickens out and bolts, Zuko calling after him. (He can’t chase him because he can’t leave his campers unattended.)
Sokka freaks out silently as he leads his campers back to his cabin for the night.
He doesn’t get much sleep.
Day of the big competition. The campers are getting ready for the final showdown. Zuko’s team is a few points ahead of Sokka’s, but not ahead by many.
Sokka avoids Zuko all morning. Aang, Yue, and Suki are worried about him but he brushes it off, saying it’s no biggie (it is).
Right before the first challenge he overhears one of his campers talking to someone from Zuko’s cabin. The kid from the opposing cabin says “Zuko was in a bad mood last night. He didn’t wanna tell us why, though.”
Oh no. It’s worse than he thought. Zuko is angry at sokka. More than usual.
The games begin. Both teams tally up points after each round of whatever they’re doing (three-legged race, canoeing, etc).
The final score is kept secret—the camp director (accompanied by Mai<3) says the final score will be announced that night at the campfire.
Sokka makes sure he doesn’t run into any scar-faced boys on the way to his cabin. Or at dinner. Or on his way to the campfire.
Everyone is gathered around outside, fire blazing, hot-cocoa and s’mores present. Sokka doesn’t even care about winning anymore. In fact, he hopes Zuko wins, so he doesnt get any more angry.
But
The Southern Water Cabin wins.
Sokka’s campers jump up and scream with excitement. And though he isn’t feeling quite himself, he still offers hugs and high fives and congratulates them all on their hard work.
Then, suddenly, while kids are mingling and cheering, Sokka feels a tap on his shoulder and spins around.
Zuko.
“Hi.”
Sokka can’t find words to say. He just stares. Is... is Zuko gonna yell at him?
“Good job.” Zuko’s holding out his hand for Sokka to shake. Sokka does so, hesitantly.
“Uh... thanks.”
After a moment too long, they end the handshake. There’s a beat of awkward silence and Sokka’s heart is racing.
“Look,” Sokka begins. “About last night. I-”
“Don’t. Me first.” Zuko looks really uncomfortable, but he still keeps talking. “You were right.”
“Huh?”
“I like you. I have liked you, I mean. For a long time. Like, three years.”
Sokka’s dumbfounded. “I thought you hated me.”
Zuko sort of nervously admits that he’s not very good with people (and that he takes great enjoyment in riling people up). And he apologizes like:
“Sorry I was a dick. Me being a fucking gay idiot who can’t ask people out doesn’t excuse me being mean. So I’m sorry.”
Sokka’s sort of touched by all of this. Zuko apologized for being an ass and he has a crush on Sokka?
Sokka figures he should apologize too, since he was pretty much just as mean to Zuko as Zuko was to him. “I’m sorry, too.”
Eventually, the stilted conversation gets sort of quiet and even more awkward, and Sokka realizes he still hasn’t confessed. And, well, better late than never.
“I like you, too.”
“Huh?”
“I like you. As in. Like. I have a crush. On you. So there.”
Zuko has no idea how to react, but eventually a giant grin makes its way into his face and it looks beautiful in the firelight and he just sort of goes:
“Um... do you wanna get coffee or tea with me? Or something? Now?”
“You mean the shitty camp coffee and tea?” Sokka quips.
“Hot Cocoa it is.”
They walk up to the kitchen building and hang out at the counter and actually get to know each other for the first time in years. And Sokka thinks that becoming a cabin leader is the best decision he’s ever made.
(They may or may not have kissed sometime during the rest of their stay. A couple of times. A lot of times. Okay, they made out in the pantry a ton, but that’s nobody’s business but theirs.)
If anyone wants to write this, lemme know!! And again thank you Stupid Squad™ <3 @chaoticidiott @appa-bottom-jeans @soft-zuko you’re also Stupid Squad™ so this is your child as well now. Enjoy.

Restaurant Zukka AU
Met a server at a restaurant on my birthday that had to be a little fruity and was inspired, so here
the restaurant's been passed down through Kya's family for generations; ever since she died, Hakoda's taken over with help from Bato (Bakoda supremacy)
a fusion restaurant; they serve a wide range of dishes from all four nations
Aang and Sokka work as servers because they get the most tips (Aang for being his regular bubbly self and Sokka thinks it's because of his flirting, but it is, in fact, because the customers like his honesty and quips)
Toph,, I don't know,,, is probably a taste-tester that didn't even apply for a job there but she just kind of showed up and they all accepted her
Katara is the permanent cashier after The Incident (Momo got into the cash register and they had to spend 20 minutes picking up money from the floor)
Suki's part-time chef, part-time shift manager, full-time idiot wrangler; the only one Hakoda trusts completely to not burn the restaurant down
Teo's their repairman and Haru's their supplier; Jet and the Freedom Fighters pass through the restaurant pretty regularly (read: Jet likes to flirt with Katara)
anyway Zuko's a rich kid and he's supposed to follow in his father's footsteps and go into business but he took some culinary classes privately
Ozai found out about the classes and threw him out, saying "if you want to cook that badly, go get a job then"
he stays with Uncle Iroh and he tips Zuko off about a restaurant not too far away that's pretty good and hiring
so he tries to go there but eventually gets lost and pouts on the sidewalk
then by some stroke of luck, Aang finds Zuko and after hearing his struggles, he decides to take Zuko to work like a stray animal
Zuko's scared of being thrown out since he technically hasn't been hired but since Toph, everyone's kind of accepted newcomers and magically gaining workers
Zuko, the ultimate rich kid who's never touched a sponge or broom before, absolutely cannot clean even if the world depended on it
mans drops plates like his hands are coated in butter and doesn't know how a vacuum works so everyone's like "???? how did you live???"
fast forward a couple of weeks and after some basic training by everyone, Zuko's become a decent worker; sometimes new customers are a little offput by how untouchable he looks but then he stumbles over his own feet trying to get to the table and stutters over his words
Mai and Ty Lee probably work down the street and when they go to the restaurant and see Zuko, Ty Lee's like ":DDD hi Zuko!!" and Mai's like "bruh" and Zuko is just panicking as the rest of the staff try to figure out wtf is going on
Zuko sneaks into the kitchen to cook something bc he was feeling hungry and Aang catches him; they try his food and suddenly he is a chef now
Sokka's kinda jealous of Zuko's cooking skills so Zuko thinks Sokka hates him but then Sokka asks Zuko to teach him to cook
at first Sokka messes around and Zuko is pretty strict and they butt heads
but then Sokka finds out Zuko cooks to feel closer to his mom
and Zuko finds out Sokka's mom died when he and Katara were little
Sokka becomes more serious and Zuko softens his words a bit
late night cooking turns into late night talking
sometimes they talk about movies, recent interests, trivial things; sometimes they talk about feeling incompetent in comparison to their sisters, losing their moms, worrying about their future; you know how late night convos go
food fights at 3 am bc why not
someone falling asleep waiting for the oven to go off; the other falls in love a bit more as they watch over them snore
the thing when one character helps the other character do something and places their hand on the other's to guide them and then they turn to each other and it's way, way too close so they both back away not noticing the other blushing,, yeah that when Zuko's teaching Sokka to cook
someone's birthday comes up and Zuko experiences firsthand what love is supposed to feel like in the form of obsessing over the perfect cake and fighting over decorations; Zuko confesses to that and everyone collectively agrees to give Zuko the best birthday ever when it comes up
the restaurant struggles a bit with business so Zuko puts his knowledge to use and helps them out
oh obviously everyone else knows they like each other way before those two even think they've developed feelings, you know how it is
Sokka and Zuko find out they like each other but instead of getting together, they dance around it like idiots bc that trope is both my addiction and poison
reporters find out Zuko's working at a low scale restaurant and Ozai forces him back; Zuko almost goes along with it, but after a few words with the Gaang, he refuses and emancipates bc fuck Ozai, all my homies hate him
the restaurant becomes pretty popular, Zuko dates and moves in with Sokka, and everyone lives happily ever after the end :)

 ATLA Fic Rec
because I've been spending way too much time reading it. Btw, this is a rec for gen fics and zukka fics.
Note: an asterisk after the description means that the fic or series is incomplete. (Sadly, this is a lot of them, but I'm pretty sure most of these fics are still currently updating.)
GEN:
Anything by MuffinLance is a must-read. my personal favourites are Salvage (where Hakoda ends up with one (1) grumpy new prisoner/crewmate/adopted son) and Little Zuko v the World (where Zuko is 12, and it's adorable).
The Family You Choose by TunaFishChris is a god-tier platonic soulmate au about zuko and the gaang, so like...go read that right now
The kintsugi series by discordiansamba is an AU where Toph's parents hire Zuko-as-Lee to be a bodyguard for her, and I love it so much. It has some of the best Toph-and-Zuko sibling bonding I've ever seen. *
Dragon Moon by Satirrian is a Dragon! Zuko AU and it's incredible. It also features Bounty Hunter Zuko, so do with that what you will. *
The What We're Given series by Haicrescendo is *chef's kiss*. It's an AU where Zuko flipped his father off early on into his banishment and started living his best life with Iroh. Enter the Gaang. Shenanigans ensue. *
The Internment series by Hannahmayski is another Zuko breaks free from his dad early AU, and it's also really good. Basically, Zuko was never given the option to capture the Avatar, making his banishment indefinite. He sails around with his crew fighting the Fire Nation and it's great. *
The best way to solve your problems (is to help someone else) by hewwodarkness is an AU where kids start disappearing in Ba Sing Se during Book 2, and Zuko takes it upon himself to do a little vigilantism. It's fantastic. *
The Blue Spirit AU series by H_Faith_Marr is an AU starting from, surprise surprise, the Blue Spirit episode. The Gaang takes in Zuko without knowing who he is, and the Power of Friendship™ goes to work on Zuko. *
The the first rule of earth kingdom fight club... series by ohmygodwhy is an AU where Zuko, among other things, fights in underground cage matches, meets Toph early, and realises that his dad might be wrong. It’s pretty funny and really good. *
The The Non-Existent Twin series by FoiblePNoteworthy is hilarious. It's an AU where Zuko poses as his own twin, Li, and the Gaang buys it hook line and sinker. *
The Guilt (The Jet Adopts Zuko AU) series by FoiblePNoteworthy is also really good. Like the title says, it’s a Zuko joins the Freedom Fighters AU. *
The new ways series by blueseam is just a Zuko and the Gaang bonding fic, mostly set in the Western Air Temple, with a side of Zuko not taking care of himself and the Gaang stepping up to the job. If you’re like me and am an absolute sucker for Zuko and the Gaang, go read this.
The Family Matters series by WinterSky101 is a really good fic if you’re looking for Hakoda and Zuko. That’s all I have to say: Hakoda and Zuko.
a nation, held by snowdarkred is a GREAT Fire Nation & Zuko fic - set before and during canon, not after it. Go read it, right now.
Notable mentions: a lot of works by naggeluide are gen and pretty funny, though if you don't headcanon any of the characters as LGBT+ you might not like some of them.
ZUKKA:
anything by Haicrescendo and dickpuncher420. For Haicrescendo, my personal favourite is the Carry On For You series, and for dickpuncher420, it’s love language.
sirens & sleepless nights by Satirrian is a modern AU that just borders on dystopian. Ba Sing Se has been overtaken by the Fire Nation, Zuko is a soldier who broke away from the Fire Nation and got shot for it, and Sokka finds Zuko on the street and brings him inside. It’s amazing, go read it!
do you take this jerk to be (your one and only) by jatersade is a fic that I’m 90% sure is on every zukka fic rec list, and it deserves to be. It’s an arranged marriage AU where Zuko is engaged to Yue, and Sokka is his cultural guide. *
midnight runs and other things by isamagicdragon is a modern AU where Zuko keeps sleepwalking into Sokka’s apartment. Shenanigans ensue. Also, top-tier Zuko, Mai and Ty Lee interactions. *
Unchained Melody by avocadolove is another fic that I see a lot on rec lists, and it 100% deserves it. It’s a long fic (as of now, it’s at 63.8k) and is an AU where Sokka, after getting taken to the Spirit World by Heibai, ends up as a ghost that only Zuko can see. Ft. great enemies-to-friends-to-lovers and an incredible plot. *
Ozymandias, King of Kings by Think_of_a_Wonderful_Thought is SO good. It’s an AU where, instead of being banished, Zuko was sent to work in a coal mine/prison, which eventually becomes the target of a Water Tribe raid after Aang’s return. It can get pretty dark, so watch out for that, and it’s really long (as of now, 168.8k). But trust me, it’s worth it. *
Heart Beat Here by thefangirlingdead is an adorable Modern AU oneshot where Zuko, while shopping for engagement rings with Katara, freaks out when Sokka lies about where he is. It’s a happy ending, don’t worry. One of my favourite fics.
feels like we only go backwards by oldpotatoe and A Certain Slant of Light by JustGettingBy are both amnesia fics where Sokka loses his memory several years after the war. They’re both so, so good. A Certain Slant of Light is finished, but feels like we only go backwards is not.
reality strikes, so bring back the night by zukkababey is a time-travel oneshot where Western-Air-Temple Sokka wakes up in the future to find his older self married to one (1) Fire Lord Zuko. Fluffy and funny.
maybe i just see you (in everything) by epicbubbles is a really cute Modern AU oneshot with love confessions and just fluff all around. 10/10 go read it!!
it’s the illusion of separation by argentoswan is a fic that has legendary status and it absolutely deserves it. God-tier Modern AU where Sokka ends up working at the Jasmine Dragon alongside his former high school bully, Zuko. (Kind of) enemies-to-friends-to-lovers, and it’s just...SO good. *
say you like your shirt soggy by crosspin is a reallyyy nice 5+1 fic. It’s Modern AU, and it’s pretty short (3.7k), but the amount of yearning that gets packed into that 3.7k,,,,*chef’s kiss*
and they were roommates by flydunes is another Modern AU where sokka puts up an ad for a roommate. Zuko moves in, and Sokka gets a crush. It’s just good vibes all around :) *
like blood from a stone by catalinacat is a Soulmate AU that took a completely different direction with the soulmate trope. The summary does a better job of explaining it than I can. *
absence of heat, excess of destiny by theycallmesuperboy is one of the best soulmate AUs out there. it’s not too long, only 4.3k words, but it covers the entire series and then some. Seriously, go read this.
it isn’t strange, but it’s true by theholyterror is a 5+1 post-canon fic with some of the best pining I’ve ever seen, ft. Ambassador Sokka and Fire Lord Zuko. The 5+1 is times Zuko went out of his way to touch Sokka.  *
like the sun inside of you by ofherlionheart is another post-canon fic, and it’s incredible so far. the first chapter alone is 23k, so it’s already a decently long read. *
the stemverse: earth science zuko au series by acezukos is a REALLY good Modern/University AU. So far, it only has one work (earth system history) but that work is already *chef’s kiss*. The series is incomplete, but earth system history is complete!
rebellion’s such a hushed affair by zeitgeistofnow is a fantastic Modern AU that, like sirens & sleepless nights, borders on dystopian. Actually, I think it is dystopian, but it hasn’t been tagged as such. Anyway, 10/10, go read it right now immediately
Mark Time by foil is a Modern AU where Sokka ghosted Zuko years ago, and they get brought back together by Aang and Katara’s wedding. It’s really good, but the fic has some pretty heavy content, so make sure you read the warnings. *
That birds would sing and think it were not night by HisMomoness is a Modern AU that has Zuko tutoring Sokka, with absolute top-tier pining. Like, seriously, the pining is insane. Superr good
this love burns so yellow (becoming orange and in its time, exploding) by meliebee is one of the best post-canon fics I’ve ever read. It features a civil war in the Fire Nation (that gets resolved about halfway through) and some great Toph and Zuko interactions, as well as some Grade A pining.
boy problems by burnt_oranges is FANTASTIC post-canon and has sokka and zuko in an accidental arranged marriage, plus some attempted assassinations. It’s great.
zuko vs the homie sexual agenda by parmigiano has Zuko and Sokka pining for each other in Ikea. Do I need to say more?
Friendship Bracelets by peachcitt is a Modern AU best friends to lovers. Pretty short (4.9k), but the pining is immaculate.
isn’t this the vision that you wanted by nebulastucky is INCREDIBLE, I read it recently because it just got completed and it’s *chef’s kiss*. It’s post-canon ft. mutual pining and some reallyyy good ‘and there was only one bed’ scenes.
Real Slow and no one knows anything but us by surveycorpsjean and quidhitch respectively are two of my favourite post-canon Ambassador Sokka and Fire Lord Zuko fics. Go check them out!
The Duke’s a Hazard by naggeluide is a really nice AU starting from the Western Air Temple, where the Duke decides that Sokka and Zuko are now his new parents. They bond over coparenting, and the (kind of) enemies-to-friends-to-lovers is really good. Plus, it’s funny.
Those Who Favor Fire by CSHfic and VSfic is a really good fic of the Spymaster Sokka AU. If you don’t know what that is, it’s an AU where Sokka fakes his death and goes undercover in an organisation that wants to kill Zuko.
Fics I added after posting (so far, all Zukka):
The Road Between Action and Inaction by Donvex is a fic that I can't believe I left out the first time?? It's a modern hitchhiking AU and it's great.
Rituals of the Ocean Floor by Donvex is a nice one too. It's only around 2.2k words, but it's a Fox Spirit!Zuko and Sharkman!Sokka AU, and I just really like the writing style.
by the stars above, i knew we were in love by theycallmesuperboy and The Fate of Nations in Our Hands by sapphic_ambitions are both top-tier post-canon fics. Be warned: by the stars above is a liiiittle bit angsty.
blue's clues by parmigiano is a really good Modern AU where Sokka, a university student journalist, gets ahold of the phone number of the Blue Spirit, a new campus vigilante. He ends up talking to the Blue Spirit to get an interview out of him, and it's really cute!
Honourable mention: the Avatar Zuko series by the_cloud_whisperer is one of the best series I've ever read, and it's really long - it got completed about a month ago, with 493.6k words in total (415k if you ignore the extra work made up of author's notes). It develops all the characters really well, especially Lu Ten, but the main ship is Zukaang. Personally, my biggest problem with Zukaang is the age difference, and Aang is aged up to be Zuko's age (or older, I think? I don't really remember) in this. I kept reading it because the plot was too good to give up, and I do highly recommend it, but yeah.
I’ll add more fics if I remember them, but this is what I had bookmarked. Also, shameless self plug here because I also write ATLA fic @ azenki on ao3

atla!
thank you!
The first character I first fell in love with:
katara. like 3 minutes into the pilot
The character I never expected to love as much as I do now:
oh definitely sokka. i specifically remember asking my partner "am i supposed to like him?" like halfway through episode 3. oh how naive i was
The character everyone else loves that I don’t:
dude i don't think i have one. I've seen some love for aunt wu? i hate her. but idk if i can say everyone else loves her lol
The character I love that everyone else hates:
uhhhhhhhhh
ok i'll just use my irl friends as the "everyone" in question and say azula.
The character I used to love but don’t any longer:
it's not that i used to love him but i don't any longer; but i am more critical of iroh now than i was when i watched the show. But it's important for me to say that i don't agree with the claim that his past in the army makes him inherently evil. anyway
The character I would totally smooch:
i'd smooch aang but like an aunt would
The character I’d want to be like:
suki and katara and mai and
The character I’d slap:
ozai <3
A pairing that I love:
okay i have a confession to make. *whispers* i like zukka.
A pairing that I despise:
gksjshgslglglalakajos [redacted] and [redacted] and [redacted] and [redacted] and [redacted] and zvtara but it's more the shippers than the ship (and also he's gay). oh and sokkla i hate it

iroh dies au??? that sounds interesting
oh anon 😭 let me tell you. it’s a somewhat edgy zukka fic (kinda gen ngl) that i have planned in which iroh dies and zuko is angry at the world and sokka, ever the strategist, is like, “i can use this actually”. i’m not even sure i’m going to finish it </3 but like i’ll do my best. here’s the summary and a snippet bc #self promo so true
“The Chase” takes an unexpected turn when General Iroh dies at the hand of his niece in a foreign land, with no titles or lands and with only his nephew to pay him respects.
Zuko is about to break at any moment now. These people, the Fire Nation takes and burns and never looks back, and he knows it was always going to end like this. The quest for his honor, for his father’s approval, for his home, all in nothing.
And Sokka is clever, he’s smart. He knows a firebender on their team, a grieving, tired, confused and furious firebending prince on their team could mean a significant advantage in the battles to come, only if Sokka plays his cards right.
Finally, Zuko looks away from the flames. His voice is stone-cold but his eyes give everything away — the anger and the pain and the confusion and the need to defend himself, to protect himself. “You’re playing a game on me.”
Sokka gives him an easy grin, and an amused sigh that lands almost like a chuckle.
“I’m playing a game with you. There’s a difference.”
Zuko practically cuts him off with a, “What’s the fucking diffence, then?”
“I can tell you if you just stop interrupting me,” Sokka says, and waits.
Zuko looks tense, as if he’s aware he’s losing control of the situation, or wondering if he ever had it in the first place. He breathes and calms himself, as if he’s also aware he won’t get anything out of Sokka being defensive. Sokka wonders if he has played this game before.
“Well?” Zuko says, his voice rough. “What is it?”
Sokka snaps out of the analysis of Zuko’s facial expressions that give everything away. “You’re angry, right?” he begins. “Like, so angry, one can see it from a mile away. So I was wondering, who are you angry at?”
“My sister,” Zuko says with no hesitation. Less convinced, “My father.” And finally, “Everyone.”
Sokka hums and peeks at the remaining fire. It’s a cold night in the desert, but the town’s ruins are enough to shelter them from the wind.
His fingers toy with one of Katara’s hairties, he bites the inside of his cheek, and softer than before, less demanding, he says, “I don’t know about every one, but I know I can help you with the first two. What we’re trying to do is no secret, defeating the Fire Nation and all that. And I believe our interests can... intertwine, at some point.” Then, he adds, “If we make them.”
Zuko eyes him askance, but he also nods and swallows. Unsure, he confesses, “I— Like you said. Before. I think they’re... hurting people. Here, in the Earth Kingdom.” Sokka resists the urge to roll his eyes, or at least tries to, because Zuko’s face hardens. His voice is small, though, “I don’t care. I don’t. I just... had a few questions for my uncle. And now— he’s gone.” He pauses, and his next words trembling with rage almost give Sokka chills, “I want her to pay.”
And there it is. The window of opportunity.
Sokka shifts closer to Zuko, puts on his best comforting voice. “I think that I can help you collect that debt.” And Zuko, who is smarter than he seems, waits. Sokka smirks, now secure in his words, “And you can help me get you there.”

Hello miss dameferre on tumblr dot com I just wanted u to know that I read wooing the water tribe recently and it's literally one of my favorite fics ever now so thank you sm for writing that masterpiece. That said I also consistently think about an au of it in which zuko thinks sokka is dating azula for some reason and has the mother of all breakdowns bc I think it's peak comedy
y’know it’s really inconsiderate of people on this site to consistently have better ideas re: my fics than me
though okay tbf i think that fic would be like. 10 times more angsty than wtwt and i really don’t take my own writing seriously enough to write angst but oh my GOD what a fucking concept.
so. what i’m imagining. the fire nation is hosting one of those post-war ‘sorry we committed genocide’ reparation celebrations, but sort of like the olympics? there are bending tournaments, and physical sport tournaments and archery and swordfighting and shit, but there’s also a tournament for like. strategy shit like pai-sho and other nameless intellectual competitions
and the gaang are all helping organise these events and eventually competing in them, but azula is forbidden from using her bending (still relatively soon post-redemption) so she throws herself into organising the strategy competitions, with sokka. and these two like. lose their Minds trying to out-think and out-strategise each other. and no one else can come close; sokka’s out-of-the-box, fucking ridiculous genius shit the only thing that could challenge azula’s ruthless genius shit.
so azula and sokka are just going back and forth with each other, making puzzles and logic problems and all kinds of ridiculous shit, constantly challenging and one-upping each other and meanwhile. Meanwhile. zuko’s trying to organise the firebending tournaments on his own and technically, sokka’s meant to be helping him with the swordfighting tournaments (it’s not an elle zukka fic without a sparring scene!) and was really looking forward to having all this time to spend with him, but sokka’s always off trying to be smarter than azula. and one day sokka shows him this like. 3-d puzzle maze he made or something and is like ‘oh, azula’s gonna love this’ and zuko’s like- wait just one fucking second
anyway, cue zuko being like. what the fuck sokka. azula, really?!?!? but he’s trying to be a supportive best friend bc that’s what sokka and zuko do, and then of course (probably with toph’s help) zuko realises the reason he’s so upset sokka’s in love with azula is because he’s in love with sokka, because that’s the fic format and im sticking with it! so this is obviously where it gets angsty because zuko’s spent his entire life fighting to measure up to azula, for whom things come naturally, and then of course the guy he’s in love with has chosen her, and im sad just thinking about it
meanwhile tho sokka’s bricking it trying to figure out how to ask out zuko (because im sorry but the ‘i thought we were already dating?’ without any kissing or formal dates only works if it’s zuko thinking it) and asking azula for advice, and azula, obviously, exclusively gives terrible advice because she thinks it’s funny. so we have zuko trying to be happy for sokka and distance himself from him, and sokka trying to woo him in the worst ways possible thanks to azula (i’m not saying sokka surprises zuko with an elegant meal, the main course of which is the popular upper-class delicacy of fried turtleduck, i’m just. thinking it loudly)
hilarity ensues, yada yada, then at the end when they’ve finally confessed their undying love for each other, sokka’s like ‘how the good fuck did you not know your sister’s a lesbian and already in a committed relationship with a woman’ and zuko’s like ‘she’s a what’ because zuko has never once in his life understood or picked up on social cues from a human woman.

zukka/wuko hc
okay so hc/fic idea:
-> zuko helps wu come to terms with him being in love with mako and also shares with him the letters that he and sokka sent each other while they were falling in love
-> after wu reads the letters, zuko makes him write one to mako, confessing how he feels
-> 100% would be titled “when the stars come out at night (do you think of me?)” or something in that vein
-> i started writing it (under the cut) but will i finish? unlikely
Zuko was the last person Wu had expected. He never in a million years would have thought Fire Lord Izumi would send her relic of a father to be the Ambassador to the Earth Kingdom. Iroh? Maybe. But Lord Zuko, hero of the hundred-year war, previous Fire Lord and ridiculously old man? Never. And Wu really couldn’t decide if he was honored or peeved; he did, after all, have to deal with someone so antiquated that he probably still thought satomobiles were a novelty.
Sighing heavily through his nose, Wu set down the letter from Izumi, pacing one of his many offices. “I can’t believe-” he started, looking back at Mako. Except Mako wasn’t there. Mako was back in Republic city, with his shiny new promotion to detective, leaving Wu to suffer alone. Instead, there was a dai-li agent guarding his door.
“Yes, your majesty?” she inquired.
“Nothing. The embassy from the Fire Nation arrives in three days. Have rooms prepared,” he said, waving a hand dismissively. The dai-li agent dipped her head and slipped out of the room. With a dramatic groan, Wu flopped onto the couch in the middle of the room, mentally exhausted.
He had spent the last few months trying to pick up the pieces of the Earth Nation that Kuvira had so rudely left behind; he’d formed alliances with the other nations, quelled uprisings and even dealt with the wrenching absence of his best friend.
Mako. The one thing he couldn’t get off his mind, couldn’t file away, couldn’t defer responsibility to someone else. Apparently, at least according to Lin, Mako had specifically requested to leave Ba Sing Se. After everything they’d been through Mako had just left, to be a detective. What about being a detective was better than being a part of the Earth King’s personal entourage? Wu couldn’t think of a single thing.
---
Apparently, Zuko was incredibly skilled at messing with Wu’s expectations. He wasn’t a crotchety old man with an over-inflated sense of self. No, he was chill. Their first meeting might have been awkward if the old man hadn’t immediately said “I’m too tired for niceties” and whipped out a pai sho game board.
Wu gaped at him. “What- where did you just get that from?”
Zuko chuckled. “I figured our time would be better spent getting to know one another over a game and tea, rather than discussing the terms of your abdication and what it means for an alliance.” He tugged at his collar. “These formalities are so overplayed.”
Wu wasn’t sure how to react. This man, who had helped the last avatar take down the tyrannical rule of the fire nation, who used to lead the fire nation, wanted to play pai sho. Wu supposed he couldn’t really say no.
---
And so it became their tradition. Once a month, when Zuko was visiting to discuss economical treatises and trade routes, cultural events and immigration, they played pai sho. At first, it was quiet. Wu wasn’t quite sure what to say to Zuko; he was in such a different league that no topics seemed like common ground. But slowly, Zuko’s snarky comments and Wu’s huffs of laughter turned into lively conversations.
“You know,” Zuko started, one sunny afternoon, while they were playing a game in Wu’s personal garden, trying to avoid dignitaries. “I’m always surprised when I visit, that you have still not been married. I’m sure you’re drowning in suitors. I know I was when I was crowned.”
Wu gagged on his tea. “I’ve just been so busy, you know, with reconstructing the Earth Kingdom,” he fumbled, scratching the back of his head. “Besides, who needs love?”
Zuko wheezed at this. “I’ve seen the way you gaze forlornly out the window when I’m taking time considering a move. And how, when you say something you think is funny, you look over your shoulder, even though there’s no one there.” He picked up a white dragon piece, flipping it between his thin fingers. Leaning in, across the board, he flicked the piece into Wu’s face.
“Ow, what was that for?” Wu yelped, rubbing the red spot on his forehead.
“Aren’t you going to tell me who it is?”
A blush crept into Wu’s cheeks. “I’m not in love with anyone,” he responded, swatting Zuko’s hand out of his face. “I couldn’t be anyw- Mako is a guy.”
The corner of Zuko’s mouth flicked up as he sat back. “Who said you can’t date a guy?”
“Who said I can?”
Zuko looked at him. “You know, we had laws against it in the fire nation. Sixty years ago. That’s all outdated now; it doesn’t matter who you fall in love with, we’re all just souls, aren’t we?” He was fiddling with the white dragon piece again and giving Wu a concentrated look. “I myself was married to another man.”
Wu tried to stop his eyes from bugging out but his dumb face, over which he had no control evidently, had morphed into shock. “I thought you were married to Mai? Izumi’s mother?”
Zuko shook his head. “Wow, you are way behind on gossip, Wu. Listen, I saved some letters Councilman Sokka and I sent each other when we were young. Would you like me to bring them to you?”
Wu felt his eyes widen even more. “Councilman Sokka?!”
“Did you learn nothing of the fire nation's affairs in your education? This is all common knowledge.”
“No, I wasn’t taught gossip,” Wu sputtered in response.
“I forget how sheltered you Earth Kingdom royals are. I remember when the saying ‘there is no war in Ba Sing Se’ circulated the city. In any case. . . “ Zuko sighed. “Would you like the letters?”

I was tagged by @hello-yue-here about wip art, since i am not a visual artist i'm sharing some of my writing below the cut
new cancer fic It was cold in the operating room. Cold and bright and so very white. It felt strange to just lay there as a team of nurses picked up a blanket and moved him from one gurney to another and Sokka hated that he couldn’t just move himself from one to the other. He did the only thing he could do, stare up from where he lay.
The ceiling was white with gray speckling on it. Like a shitty inverted version of the night sky. He hated it.
The cold bit into him in the flimsy hospital dress and he shivered, wishing for a sweatshirt. A nurse came and immediately placed a warmed up blanket on top of him.
Whoever had come up with a blanket warmer was a genius.
“We’re gonna put the oxygen mask on you now and you’re going to start feeling sleepy,” the nurse explained, as if he hadn’t done this exact thing days earlier. She had a friendly face and she smiled at him. “We’ll need you to count down from ten. Okay?”
“Okay.”
The mask went on his face, he breathed in and closed his eyes.
“Ten.”
The medical team was murmuring to each other and setting things up.
“Nine.”
His nose was cold and it itched under the mask.
“Eight.”
His limbs were starting to feel heavy and he relaxed into the feeling.
“Seven.”
The world faded away from him and there was nothing. --
Zukka Borrowed Hearts Universe One shot
“I am beginning to suspect that I made a mistake,” Zuko confessed as he sat on an uncomfortable bench.
Sokka’s laugh came from the phone he had pressed against his ear. “In taking Izumi to find her graduation dress?”
“In letting Azula come along,” he corrected. “For two such decisive people they are hindering one another in a decision being made.”
Sokka made a sympathetic sound. “Sorry, babe. I can’t imagine it’ll take too much longer though.”
“Don’t jinx me,” he said to his boyfriend, hoping that the other man was right.
“One could argue you are already jinxed,” Sokka teased. There was the sound of Varrick’s voice on the other end of the line, though Zuko couldn’t make out what he was saying. “Hey, look, I’ve got to get going. Varrick and I have plans with Suki.”
“Have fun,” Zuko said, noting that Izumi and Azula were walking out of the changing room in another dress. It’d been several minutes since the last time they’d come out and he had the feeling there had been vetoed dresses that hadn’t even made it out of the dressing room.
“You too,” Sokka grinned. “Love you.”
“Love you too,” Zuko answered, ending the call so that he could give his daughter his full attention.
no pressure to anyone I'm tagging and if you have visual art feel free to use that instead @whenyourfavouritedies @unacaritafeliz and literally anyone else who wants to do it

A suggestion/request from @bon-fly
Medieval Au Zukka, I would have added more detail about the other ships but it had already much longer than I anticipated
✨Enjoy✨
"What ever could be the problem my lord?" Came the characteristically grumpy voice of Zuko's Dwarflven Mage Toph
He leaned back from his slouched position to look at the blind woman. "It's nothing much really. I Just... I need to summon the southern knights for the Avatar honoring" he gave a sigh
"Then summon them" she said simply while leaning on his throne. There was a few other advisors in the room, none of them were ever expecting Toph's brash behavior towards the king or the fact that he took it. The high elven king never once found his Dwarven mage's behavior to be uncalled for. His reasoning was simple. She was a friend, one which would lay her life down for his just as he would hers.
"Its not that simple Toph, he's going to be with them" Zuko leaned his elbow on the table and pressed his hand to his forehead.
"If I may, My lord, the avatar is technically escorting the knights, not the other way around" advisor Tayko offered
Zuko gave a snort "thats not who I'm worried about Tayko, but I appreciate the sentiment. Its the Cheif's... ehm, son"
"Did he do something wrong my lord?" Tayko asked with narrowed eyes
"More like he did everything right and managed to fluster mister pointy ears" Toph bellowed and Zuko flushed a deep red
"Shut it Toph!" But he laughed with her "she is right though... I'm just, nervous is all, dont worry Tayko, I'll have the letter written by tonight"
Tayko, still being wary of how Toph behaved but understanding that her king was very brash with people who acted out of line, gave a smile "my lord, may I say something?"
Zuko sat straight and looked at her warily "go on Tayko"
"It is to my knowledge that most people don't support miss Toph being here, but I have never seen anyone make you smile as she has," she paused and looked at her hands in her lap "I'm very happy to see you smile again"
"Well, its nice that someone noticed, thank you Tayko" Toph said with a big grin spread from ear to ear across her cheeks. "Now, Zuko has some writing to do, so run along, I will fetch you when it is written"
Not long after Tayko scurried off she was fetched once more and given the letter to send by hawk to summon the southern nights and the avatar. The hawk response came by the next evening when Toph was training Zuko to react faster on both sides, not just his good side. "I know you're not a dwarf but ANYONE can feel the vibrations, and you're clear proof of that" Toph said as she watched the king use his blades and flames to expertly block and deflect each rock sent his way.
"My lord" Tayko spoke suddenly from behind Toph and had a blade fly past her head missing by a good six inches "Eep!" She tensed while he took off his blindfold
"Sorry Tayko, you startled me" Zuko gave a sheepish grin "what did you need?"
"The uh.." she moved away from the wall with a sigh "the Southern Chief sent back, they will be here in three days time. Shall I summon Lady Mai and Ty Lee?"
Zuko gave a huff and slouched his shoulders, his pointed ears slanting downward as well "that would be best, though they won't be happy to be summoned so soon after their honeymoon"
The pair most certainly weren't, the arrival of them was easy to notice because a knife flew past Zuko's head, barely grazing his ear and landed on his throne "ah, Mai, sorry to summon you so early after you two wed, but youre the only ones capable of pulling off a three day party planning."
"You are going to owe use so many fruit tarts!" Mai spoke harshly as she stormed into the room
"Yeah! With rose petals!" Ty Lee backed up her wife with a much softer voice.
Mai smiled softly at Ty Lee and placed a quick kiss to her forehead "thank you darling."
"Of course, you'll have all the reward you like, but we have to prepare for the avatar and Sokka." Zuko said with a wave of his hand.
"You mean the Avatar and the Southern Knights" Mai pointed out
"Thats what I said"
By the time the third day of planning had finished the kingdom was decked out with shimmering blue flowers of all assortments, ribbons and the like were draped around anything that seemed fit to the recently weds.
At high noon Zuko was found with Ming fixing his hair and Ursa helping him with his robes and jewels. "He'll be here soon Mom"
"I know sweetie, but you need not worry, the Avatar will appreciate the festivities you have set out for him and the knights" Ursa reassured her son while tying off the last bit of silk and Ming slid in the metal hold for his hair piece.
"Thats not who he meant lady Ursa" Toph said bluntly. Ursa turned to the blind dwarf behind her who had a soft smile on her face rather than her normal mischief coated expression. "My lord, they've arrived at the gates"
Zuko flushed "lead the way" and she did. She lead him down the many stairs, with his many layers of silk flowing freely behind him. They followed the winding paths of the kingdom streets until they reached the Knights and Avatar. Chief Hakoda and Bato stood with Sokka on their right and Katara on their left with Avatar Aang in the middle. A hobbit at maybe their hips was a humorous sight indeed, but Zuko's focus was on someone else.
Sokka stood in his formal attire, a pale blue high collar robe ending at his shoulders but his arms covered by a a deep blue draping silk over dress connected in the center by a fire opal jewel. Zuko was of course caught staring by the chiefs themselves "ahem, Lord Zuko?" Bato spoke up with a raised brow
"Oh, uh! My apologies, welcome to my kingdom," he turned to look at Aang who smirked when he noticed the flush on Zuko's cheeks "thank you for coming to the honoring Avatar Aang"
"Say, Lord Zuko, Sokka told me about his last trip here.. well, technically he spoke mostly of you, not much variety in his stories I'll tell you tha-!" The small boy was silenced by a hand over his mouth from a flustered Sokka.
The blue eyed boy stammered out a "sorry about him, he loves to blurt things out without thinking them through!"
"Sounds like someone else I know" Katara said with her hand on her hips. From just looking at her ears he could tell that she was a bender, and a powerful one at that. "Sorry about that Zuko, my brother and Aang love getting on eachothers nerves, especially about you" she rolled her eyes
Zuko however was as red as his robes "oh, uh, thats perfectly alright, Toph, would you mind showing them to their quarters?"
Toph gave a laugh "you want a blind dwarf to lead four southern elves and a hobbit to their living quarters?"
"You may be blind but you can easily see, and you know it Toph-" a rock hit the back of his head and he yelped before giving her a pout
"Haaah! Yeah, youre right, but don't you wanna show baby blue to his room?"
Zuko gave a huff "Chief Hakoda, Cheif Bato, Warrior Karata and Avatar Aang please follow Mage Beifong to your living quarters. Warrior Sokka, I need a word with you about that design you sent over last moon, so I will show you to your room"
"Oh, of course" and with that the group left the two man alone to walk to the palace. For a short while they were quiet but Sokka broke the silence by linking arms "so, about those designs, I was thinking we could easily make a cart that didn't need any animal to pul it if we just used"
Zuko didnt hear much besides Sokka's voice, too lost in the fact that he was finally here to understand what the sounds meant together until they made it into the castle and Sokka tugged him into a small broom closet "I know why you actually separated me from the others"
Zuko cleared his throat "im sure you are aware of my reasons, but you did not need to drag me in here, if you were worried about someone catching wind you made the mistake of going into a broom closet with one of my maids already in here" he turned to help her up "sorry miss Jin, I'll give you the day off paid in full"
Zuko then took hold of Sokka's hand and dragged him out of the small room and back to the empty hallway. "Hah, my bad" Sokka said with a small voice crack
"Don't worry about it, thought you shouldn't worry about the staff catching wind of this sort of thing, everyone here adores you, I hope you know that" Zuko chuckled
"What sort of thing?" Sokka feigned innocence and Zuko being ever so gullible fell for it with a flushed face
"Oh! I'm sorry, I just thought that, maybe you had caught onto my affections for you, and reciprocated them. What did you think I-!!" The king didn't have much room to continue his awkward words because Sokka planted a quick kiss to his cheek to silence him
"Of course I do Zuko, and I was only teasing, you really should be better at spotting that with Toph being around you all the time, hah, she plays the- hey! Where are we going?"
Zuko said nothing, and just dragged him to the room he was to be staying in for the week of festivities and slammed the door behind them. "Don't. Don't.... don't tease me about that okay? I'm not entirely used to anyone returning affections since... well" he genstured to his burn scar and damaged ear.
"Oh, oh Zuko no, Zuko I'm sorry, I didnt realize... I'm sorry" Sokka took the shorter elf's face in his hands and forced him to look him in the eyes "Zuko you're beautiful, I can't get over how stunning you looked under the moonlight the first time we met. And what's even more stunning about you is the ability to make a confession walk seem like a diplomatic walk to anyone but the two of us. You really do have a way with words"
Zuko was practically melting in the hands of the southern warrior, "you... you really think that of me?" He asked with a shy softness to his voice.
Sokka couldnt help the fond chuckle "Of course I do Zuko, now, if its not too much, may I give you a real kiss this time?"
All Sokka needed was a small nod and he sealed the distance between them. Every mile, every inch, every millimeter of distance that had ever been between the fire elven king and Southern elven warrior was gone, and all that remained was stars.
The two wed thirteen moons later, with a promise to protect, love, and trust one another in this life and every life that came after.

wip wednesday
thank u for the tag @merisalright!!!
so i’m having a hard time finishing fics these days,, and my university just assigned us our summer work so i don’t get as much of a break as i thought i would :(
but! the other day i started writing a zukka post-canon fic where ambassador sokka and fire lord zuko exchange letters,, so here’s a snippet from that!
Zuko,
I won’t pretend to understand what occurred that night. I have spent sleepless nights trying to piece together what it was that I said, what I did, that would make you push me away like that. Did I imagine our letters? I thought it wasn’t just me, that it couldn’t be just me, who felt that way. I thought we saw each other. You have let yourself grow so much from who you were, so I guess I don’t understand why you won’t let yourself be happy.
But I have spent a lot of time speculating, with no result, so that is not what this letter is. This letter is a confession.
I fear we have not been transparent enough with each other. I fear that we have hidden behind the pretense of letters, saying they were just communications, ways to ensure the Fire Nation and Water Tribes were upholding accords. These have never been about the accords, Zuko, and we both know that.
When we were kids, fighting in a war much too large for us, I never even considered this possibility. For me, it was making out of it alive, with everyone I loved still alive. You were someone I loved back then, and you are someone I love now. Nothing has changed that. Not the years, and not that night at your birthday celebration. I love making you laugh, I love seeing you relax, I love making sure you don’t take yourself too seriously.  I love the way kids just gravitate to you and you secretly love it. I love the way your mouth turns up at the corners when you think I’m not looking.
Sometimes I think you are the sun, and I am a wayward planet that is constantly drawn into your surface by the pull of gravity, a force I cannot escape even if it should burn me away. I long for you like the tides yearn for the moon despite the miles between them.
In the Water Tribe, we have a story about souls. We believe that the ocean and moon spirits were one spirit that was split into two in order to balance and complement each other, always circling one another in harmony. We believe each human soul was divided in the same fashion, and we are destined to wander the earth until we can find the one whose soul we share. It is believed that the stars are spirits immortalized in the heavens, designed to lead us to our other half the same way they led the ocean spirit to the moon. I’ve charted the stars for years, and they’ve always led me back to you.
I hope they will lead you back to me too.
Forever,
Sokka
i’m feeling pretty attached to this one, so hopefully i can finish it (and my voltron fic) when i can :)

******
There’s a lot of back and forth with Katara and his family, but eventually Sokka is able to convince them to let him move in on his own. It’s sophomore year and he doesn’t need them cramming into a tiny dorm room, taking up more space than necessary, okay? Sokka just wants to get to his room, meet his new roommate, and get unpacked. Maybe run to the dining hall and grab some lunch. Or dinner. Whatever meal is happening by the time he gets there.
Unfortunately, his plans to meet the roomie are thwarted, the grin on his face and ‘hello’ on the tip of his tongue dying out the moment he opens the door. His roomie’s been here if the immaculately made bed, and almost compulsively organized desk is any indication. Only the room is empty so Sokka can only assume the guy is out and about.
It’s a little discouraging, but Sokka can live with this. Might be better to unpack on his own anyway. He just hopes his roommate isn’t a neat freak considering the neverending mess that is his room back home. There’s going to be a lot of arguments in the future if that’s the case. Hopefully, some sort of compromise can be reached.
Sokka gets to work unpacking his things and getting his side of the room set up. He’s sure his roommate wouldn’t appreciate him leaving boxes all over the place to unpack later. The text chime on his phone goes off just as he’s placing a poster on the wall. He checks his phone and finds a message from Yue.
She’s asking if he wants to meet up for dinner. Grinning, he texts her back with a time to meet up and which dining hall. In all honesty, he’d been planning on going alone to try and make some new friends. Having dinner with Yue though is something he can’t pass up. She’s likely to be in the music hall for most of the semester so this might be their only chance to meet up before classes start.
He has an hour until dinner though, and so he gets to work making his bed and organizing his desk. It’s way more work than he’d normally do, but he doesn’t want to make a bad first impression with his roomie… who still hasn’t returned.
Zuko. He reminds himself. His roommate’s name is Zuko, and he has got to stop calling him ‘the roommate’. Sokka just hopes they can be amicable towards each other. The last thing he wants is to be living with another Jet.
Sokka does his best to make his side of the room as neat and organized as possible, then leaves to meet up with Yue.
******
The dining hall is packed by the time Sokka and Yue make it inside. He’s hardly surprised. This is the most popular of the three on campus. They wander through the crowd, looking for an empty table and eventually find one in the back near the windows. Sokka promptly slaps his bag down on the surface and they leave to get food.
A group of what he assumes to be freshmen watch him go with wide eyes and he laughs a little. They always say not to leave stuff unattended at the tables, but he’s long since gotten over that fear. Nobody in his year or higher seems to care about such a thing and he certainly would never steal someone’s stuff. If someone took his table, though, he’d be fuming.
Yue goes for the sushi. Sokka settles with loading his plate up with meat kebabs. Sushi is all well and good, but he spent the entire summer consuming Water Tribe cuisine. No… he’s been looking forward to food from the other nations to try out. He takes a moment to chat with some of the dining hall staff, surprised to find Suki of all people working the line. She introduces him to a few new faces before he needs to return to his dinner date with Yue.
Suki gives him a playful shove, eyes rolling as he walks away from her station. She knows Sokka isn’t serious about Yue. Not like that at least. Yue is gorgeous, for sure, and at one point, he thought maybe there was something there. That was before she confessed to having met her soulmate. The news crushed him a little but they’ve managed to stay good friends and he’s more than happy with that arrangement.
Dinner passes with them getting caught up and sharing stories from over the summer. Sokka’s summer was full of fishing and teaching some of the younger kids how to hunt out on the ice. Yue taught piano and singing lessons to children of nobles. They exchange schedules so they can plan to meet up at some point in the future, though Sokka knows it’s likely to fall through given their classes. Still, it’s the thought that counts, and they can always meet up for a study session if needed.
Suki has long since finished her shift and joined them for a late dinner by the time they're leaving. The pair part ways with Yue so she can head over to the music room. He’s not even sure if the academic buildings are even open, but Yue’s pretty dedicated to her music. Sokka and Suki head back to their dorm to relax before classes start on Tuesday.
“I heard there’s a new tea shop in town,” Suki says as their conversation drifts away from classes. She’s walking along one of those low walls along the sidewalk that people love to sit on. “We should go check it out some time.”
“The one that opened over the summer?” Sokka asks and she nods. “Yeah, I think Aang was talking about it earlier. Said the tea there was the best. I’d be down for going.”
“Bring your roommate so we can all meet him?” Sokka scoffs and rolls his eyes.
“I haven’t even met the guy,” he tells her.
“Oh…” Suki gets to the end of the wall and jumps down. “Has he not moved in yet?”
“He moved in before me but he wasn’t there when I arrived,” he answers with a shrug. “Guess he’s just busy… or something.” Only… Sokka vaguely recalls something about Zuko being a transfer student. So… maybe he’s been getting familiar with campus, or making some new friends? He shrugs again. “I’m sure I’ll run into him soon enough since we live together. Maybe he’ll be okay with joining us.” Assuming he isn’t busy with his own stuff.
“Remind me again why you didn’t just room with Haru?” she asks. Sokka sighs. So… in reality, he and Haru probably would’ve been great roommates. Sokka would’ve done it in a heartbeat but Haru wanted to move off campus and he just wasn’t ready for that. Besides, rooming with a random person just means more opportunity to make new friends, and maybe meet his soulmate, of course.
“I wanted another year on campus, remember?” Suki hums but still looks unconvinced. She would’ve just moved off campus if she were in his position. Jet would’ve turned anyone off from having a roommate again. Thankfully, Sokka believes in second chances. Also, not everyone is Jet.
“How’s Katara liking her new place?” Suki asks, and the conversation turns to their small group of friends.
He invites Suki back to his room which she kindly turns down. Something about needing to finish unpacking.
Much to Sokka’s surprise, his room is currently occupied. By someone he can only assume is his roommate given the guy’s half-naked appearance. Sokka’s gaze starts first at the towel wrapped around his waist, then follows water droplets up his stupidly toned abs, and obscenely muscular arms to land on his surprised gaze. He feels his face grow warm as they stare silently at each other before Sokka abruptly steps out of the room and shuts the door.
He stares at the door wondering what the hell he’s doing. This is his room too! They’re going to be living together for the next year, and they sure as hell will be times they see each other half-naked! If he can’t survive this then it’s going to be a long year.
Thankfully, his roommate has gotten dressed in the time he spent outside having a crisis, donning a simple red tunic and pants. Fire Nation, then, Sokka determines, glancing quickly over Zuko’s side. Other than his clothes, nothing else seems to reveal his heritage. Makes Sokka wonder at that but he chooses not to ask. For now at least. He’ll ask when they’ve gotten to know each other better.
Zuko’s sitting at his desk, headphones on and blaring music loud enough Sokka can hear the lyrics. Okay so… not exactly the best first impression, but he wishes he could at least introduce himself properly. Sokka peaks over his shoulder as he moves into the room, curious over what Zuko is furiously scribbling into his book. He must get too close because his companion freezes and then quickly snaps the book shut, turning to glare at the person behind him. The music cuts off suddenly.
“Can I help you?” Zoku growls.
“Sorry…” Sokka steps away from him and over to his bed. Zuko’s still watching him and he finally notices the very large and entirely unmistakable scar on his face. It looks pretty gnarly and he wonders vaguely if Zuko can even see out of that eye but he wisely chooses not to comment. Instead, he flops onto his bed and says, “I’m Sokka by the way. Nice to meet you officially.”
Zuko hums. There’s a long beat of silence where Sokka thinks the conversation may have ended. He groans and Sokka watches his roommate slide down in his chair, hands on his face.
“Why am I so bad at this?” he hisses under his breath. He’s trying to be discrete but it’s loud enough that Sokka can hear it. Sokka stares at his phone and pretends like he didn’t hear the comment. Zuko mutters something else that he definitely doesn’t hear and then replies, “I’m… uh...Zuko?”
Sokka snorts. He can’t help it, and he can’t help the tiny laugh that bursts out of him. Zuko frowns, turns back toward his desk, and okay… now Sokka just feels bad.
“Sorry,” he says, waving a hand in the air. “Didn’t mean to laugh. I just… are you telling me your name or asking?” Zuko huffs.
“No, I…” A hand brushes through his hair and he sighs again. “I’m just not good with meeting new people…” A beat of silence. “Sorry…”
“You don’t need to apologize, man,” Sokka tells him, waving the apology off. Zuko turns around again. Sokka gives him a reassuring smile. “I get it. Meeting new people is hard especially when they’re about to spend a whole year crammed in a tiny room together.” The tiniest possible smile Sokka’s ever seen wiggles onto Zuko’s face. It’s gone just a second later.
“So… uh… what are you studying?” Zuko asks.
“I haven’t decided on a major yet…” he confesses. “Sort of stuck between a few different options. You?”
“I’m studying art therapy.”
“Oh, cool.” Sokka isn’t too sure what to say to that, other than it sounds like a hard major. He’s honestly surprised that Zuko’s studying something so… artsy? Especially considering how… not art-esque his side of the room is. If Sokka had to guess a major, it probably would have been business related or something. Hell, he doesn’t even have any posters on the walls. If it weren’t for his very obvious Fire Nation attire, Sokka’s not even sure he’d know where his roommate was from. Not that it matters, but still... Zuko’s half of the room is as impersonal as they can get. Guy likes his privacy, Sokka supposes.
He wonders if Zuko’s a firebender.
“What got you into that?” he asks instead, unwilling to pry into that subject just yet. Zuko shrugs.
“Art really helped me through some… things,” he answers. “So I wanted to use it to help others.” Curiosity makes him want to ask about it but the scar on his face is probably a big indicator of what happened. Also, asking would be rude and Gran-Gran would no doubt scold him for prying into a sensitive subject.
Instead, Sokka directs the conversation to class schedules. They take the time to go over when each of them wake up every day. Surprisingly (or maybe, unsurprisingly) Zuko has a strict wake up schedule of the literal ass crack of dawn. He likes to get an early start to the day regardless of his plans which only means it’ll translate to the weekends as well, much to Sokka’s dismay. Weekends are Sokka’s down days, okay? He likes to stay up late and sleep until noon.
Zuko swears he’ll be quiet, which Sokka has no reason to not trust so he goes along with it. It won’t be a problem anyways unless Zuko also goes to bed early which he reassures he definitely does not.
Sokka admits he’s pretty messy because it doesn’t hurt to tell the person he’s rooming with. He promises to be as clean as possible though so it doesn’t disrupt anyone; something Zuko is visibly appreciative of.
At some point, Zuko moves to his own bed and the lights are turned off. Silences between conversations grow longer until both boys eventually fall asleep.
He finds himself swimming deep into the depths of the ocean. Something swims ahead, close enough to make out the shadow but too far to distinguish whatever it is. Still, he finds himself drawn to the creature.
The water grows colders.
It grows darker.
Still he swims.
Reaching.
Chasing.
Trying in vain to catch up to something… something he knows, deep down is important. Whatever’s in front of him is the thing he’s been searching an entire lifetime for yet it eludes him.
Remains too far out of reach until its shadow blends into the darkness of the ocean.
He finds himself alone.

Traveling on foot was definitely... not fun, but hey, what are you gonna do right? Definitely not avoid the guy you just confessed your undying but also irritating love to. Totally not. Sokka was only at the front because he had the map and is the only one that knows how to read it is all.
"I think we should stop here and camp for the night, its got a good bit of water so we can refill the canteens and you two can practice waterbending" Sokka said with a sigh while he rolled up his map and took a stance in front of the small oasis sort of looking place he picked.
Lily grinned "so what you're saying is I finally get to see waterbending other than water out of the canteen to drink?"
Katara and Aang gave confused looks "yeah? Didn't know you wanted to.."
"Well, with an earthbending boyfriend and a firebending boyfriend while living nowhere near any waterbenders you can guess that I've never seen anybody bend water so I am DYING to see you guys bend some water"
"Me to" Kurt raised his hand
"Yeah, me three" Tarren said with a smirk.
The two waterbenders only gave awkward chuckles before everyone started to settle into their spots, Sokka ontop of a rock, iroh and Jee under one of the trees with a small fire going and some tea over it, ginger as requested by Lily. Lily Tarren and Kurt all watched Aang and Katara bend water between the two of them, the two earthkingdom kids mesmerized by the gentle movements of the water just before Kurt joined the pair in the water.
"What are you doing?" Katara asked with a raised brow without stopping the waterbending.
"Joining" was all Kurt offered before he lit a small flame and started bending in the same forms as Aang and Katara, the flames seeming to mirror the image of the water but with heat and less liquid control. "I learned my bending from water scrolls" he said with a smile.
"I... didnt know it was possible to learn one bending from another kinds form..." Katara said with a clearly interested tone
"Its all I've ever known," kurt shurgged while bending the fire "you could bend wTer similarly to fire if you were more on the aggressive offense, more like earth if you were aggressive defense, more like air if you were more like a breeze, light and free." Kurt extinguished hus flame "I've only ever studied water scrolls and earth scrolls for bending but reading what little Ive found on air nomad culture and bending and seeing Aang in action I might be able to pick up a bit of the style"
"Wow! Your Sokka but with firebending!" Toph chimed in.
"He's... what?" Sokka turned to Toph with a confused look
"You.. you know the nonbending style of each nation and kurt knows the firebending style of each nation" Toph said with a shrug
"No wonder I trusted him" Sokka gave Kurt a thumbs up
Zuko who was filling canteens during this entire conversation and just finished tossed the last one onto the pile of their belongings loudly before storming off with a shout. He knew that comment shouldn't have gotten to him, Sokka was just making light of the situation but with all that had went down over the past week Zuko was drained and didn't have the energy to try and decode Sokka. He wouldn't have to decode him if Sokka would just talk to him like a normal person. But no. Its, be standoffish, be gentle, be harsh, confess, and then avoid.
He normally didn't want to talk to people so it pissed him off to no end how much he wanted to talk to Sokka even though Sokka wanted nothing to do with him. He was lost in his heas long enough he came to a small Boulder by a tree and plopped his brooding self on said boulder to rest against the tree. A badgerfrog hopped out infront of him and croaked "Why can't I just express normally" Zuko groaned out "not like he does, but hey, one of us should right?" He got a short croak in return "I mean, hes better at talking to people than I am! And he knows that! Everyone does! I suck at... socializing in general..." Zuko shrugged but once again got a short croak in return "wellz yeah, I was raised in a palace but my dad never wanted me to take the throne so I wasn't really taught how to... act around people? If that makes sense"
"Yeah it makes sense"
"Really? I us- wait a second" Zuko turned to see Sokka standing there with a smirk, to which he yelped and fell off the boulder with a thud and an "ouch you jerk!"
Sokka let out a giddy laugh while helping Zuko to his feet "sorry, sorry, I just... usually its me being walked in on like this."
"You... talk to animals to solve your problems?"
"No goofy, I talk to Yue" Sokka gave a grin
"Yue? You mean the northern princess?" Zuko narrowed his eyes with confusion
"Yeah! Except she's the moon now so I talk to the moon... I doubt she can actually hear me but I know she's there, yknow, when she was little she had a burning on her left eye just like you and me but the spirit water was able to heal her and prevent the scar from ever showing up"
"Wait, are you saying Yue was supposed to be our soulmate? But she... turned into the moon?" Sokka only laughed in response "Sokka I'm serious! What do you mean she turned into the moon"
"Oh, right you weren't there for all of it. Well, the moon spirit gave Yue life when she was born si after Zhao killed the fish she... gave it back" Sokka looked down "I had to watch her turn into the moon spirit and disappear"
Zuko blinked once, twice, and thrice before responding "thats rough buddy"
"Yeah, well, at least I have you right?" Sokka grabbed Zuko's collar "say, why did you run off, you were saying something to toady over there, but I wanna hear it"
"I was jealous" Zuko said plainly which caught Sokka off guard
"Of?"
"You trusting Kurt so easily"
"Oh... wait you want me to trust you? Thats all? You're being broody because you want me to trust you? Zuko I already do trust you"
"Hey! I am not broody!"
Sokka pulled Zuko in for a quick kiss "yes... you are, but its okay, your cute when you brood. Now lets get back to camp Lily said she was going to make dinner and I dont know about you but I'm starving"
Zuko didnt get the option to choose he was instead lifted up and hoisted over Sokka's shoulder "hey! Put me down! I can walk just fine"
"Sure you can, but were you actually going to follow me back to camp?"
Zuko stayed quiet for a bit before mumbling "no..."
The walk back was quiet and short but he was, instead of being set down, thrown down but the fall was gentle because Aang managed to bend some air for him. "Jerk"
"Yeah, but I'm cute and you forgive me right?" Sokka made puppydig eyes and Zuko couldnt help but laugh at him
"Yeah, sure, whatever you say oh cute one"
