Ground ivy is another invasive edible commonly found in lawns and fields.
It was historically used when brewing beer (before hops, or when hops were unavailable), for clarity and to add an earthy, floral flavor.
This isn’t one I’d put in a salad – as a member of the mint family (lamiaceae), it has an aromatic flavor that I find similar to sage and rosemary. I use it mostly as a spice for that reason, but you can also use it to make tea. It blends well with mountain mint, lavender, and apple blossom.

Bzzz!
Just some bees in my garden and in the fields and on a neighbourhood walk. :)
Featured bees include bumblebees (native), green sweatbees (native), honeybees (invasive), carpenter bees (native), and some I'm not sure about.
Featured flower hosts include bull thistles (invasive weed), rose of sharon (invasive), New England aster (native), cup plant (native), starthistle (not native), Nuttall's sunflower (native), purple coneflower (native), anise hyssop (native), white wood aster (native), swamp milkweed (native), sow thistle (invasive weed), creeping charlie (invasive), creeping thistle (invasive weed), wild rose (native maybe), wild bergamot (native), bride's feathers (native), bigleaf lupin (native maybe or invasive), and upright prairie coneflower "Mexican hat" (native species, but a cultivar).
All my photos, unedited. Don't mind the weirdness of the third last photo. It's my phone's "portrait" which I found out belatedly can have, uh, interesting results.

If you think all our gardens are manicured and weeded, absolutely not! I’ll be getting all this out to find the stuff that’s actually supposed to be here, but, we can appreciate the wildness for now. It emerged very quickly!

Just May Day Things
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Yesterday's Flower Inspired Menu:
Chevre with chives, ground ivy, and tulips served with crackers and a veggie plate Dandelion gnocchi served with a garlic mustard cream sauce Cheeseburgers (Why? Not sure but Dora insisted on making them) Forsythia poke cake* With a choice of Strawberry wine spritzers or Violet Gin Sours It was a small gathering this year, just the base coven and our SOs. Each of us helped in the gathering of flowers, making of the food, or crafting of the May Pole and Flower crowns. Just seven people getting a bit sun addled (it was 70 which is far warmer than it's been up here in the somewhat frozen north and our bodies aren't used to it yet) picking flowers on the most perfect day of the year. We worked hard for our meal harvesting flowers which resulted in only a few photos of our festivities.
*The forsythia cake was made in my Nana's old cake pan from the 50s that I inherited from her. It still has her signature on it from when she used to bring it to events with her girlfriends (I'm always careful not to soap that area to keep the sticker). She loved May Day and taught me to celebrate it as a child and would have loved so much to eat flowers. I wish that I'd known how many flowers were edible while she was still alive.

the weed in with my Aloe Plant? it's Creeping Charlie! it's a ground ivy that my parents have around their house which means that it's probably been sitting dormant in the soil for over a year
the absolute funniest part is that it popped up this summer around when roe v. wade was overturned and, according to google, Charlie here is an abortifacient. the universe really said "here are some options for you babe" and i just think that's great lmao
