Arthur and Teddy Are Coming Out by Ryan Love - 3/5 stars
The Fate of Stars by SD Simper - DNF at pg 32
A Gathering Storm by Joanna Chambers - 4.75/5 stars
I kept getting the Madame Leota room from Haunted Mansion stuck in my head as I was reading this (not a bad thing!). This book has a surprisingly low rating on the Storygraph, and I'm not going to torture myself by looking at the reviews, but I'm assuming it's because of the power discrepancy between Ward and Nick. Clearly it didn't bother me as I really enjoyed the book!
Dionysus in Wisconsin by EH Lupton - 4.75/5 stars
At some point I might get tired of Mid-Century Modern romances, but not this day. This book was super fun, with an interesting world and lovely characters. And a Midwest setting! I've spent a lot of time in Madison, Wisconsin, where this book is set, so I got the added bonus of knowing most of the places pretty well. There was even a shoutout to an obscure piece of Madison history, the Lost City in the Arb. I have to get the second book in the series now!boy
Boy Meets Boy by David Levithan - 3.25/5 stars
I gave this book an extra quarter of a star for being written in 2003, when it would have been genuinely pretty groundbreaking. Reading it in 2024, it's very twee and pretty cringey (the queer utopia town would have been a magical fantasy in 2003, not so much now in a lot of places). When Levithan credited Francesca Lia Block's Weetzie Bat books in the acknowledgements, I though, ah. No wonder. Hated those as a teen.
All that said, there's some genuinely lovely writing in this book, and it has its place in the queer canon.
The Greywacke by Nick Davidson - 5/5 stars
Super interesting nonfiction about the discipline of geology and how the early geologic epochs were figured out. Also gave me an idea for a historical romance about gay Victorian geologists.
Home Grown Talent by Joanna Chambers & Sally Malcolm - 5/5 stars
I think I loved this one more than the first in the series. The social media scandal was perfect, in that it was exactly as absurd as every social media scandal is, and thus hilarious, but also chilling in how even something so stupid can ruin people's lives.
The First Bright Thing by JR Dawson - DNF at pg 1
Prince of the Sorrows by Kellen Graves - DNF at pg 30
Reuben's Hot & Cold by M Arbon - 3/5 stars
Slight Foxing Around the Edges by Melissa Polk - DNF at pg 132
Restored by Joanna Chambers - 5/5 stars
Balefire by Jordan L Hawk - 4.75/5 stars
A Rulebook for Restless Rogues by Jess Everlee - 4/5 stars
The Mars House by Natasha Pulley - 5/5 stars
See my brain vomit about this book here. If you've been around here for any amount of time you know all Natasha Pulley's books make me feral. Absolutely no exception here. I cannot believe her first UK publisher dropped her over this book. Idiots! It's wonderful just like everything she's ever written.
In the Case of Heartbreak by Courtney Kaye - DNF at pg 181
The Piano Tuner by Daniel Mason - DNF at pg 21
The Charm Offensive by Alison Cochrun - 5/5 stars (reread)
Just as good as the first time I read it!
Exhalation by Ted Chiang - 4.5/5 stars
The Foxhole Court by Nora Sakavic - DNF at pg 84
Crisped + Sere by TJ Klune - 4.75/5 stars
It actually kind of makes me mad that this series isn't Klune's most famous work, because it's real good. At this point it seems kind of unlikely he's going to continue it, but man, I'd love another book.
These Silent Stars by Chani Lynn Feener - DNF at pg 68
Trailer Park Trickster by David R Slayton - 5/5 stars
See below.
Deadbeat Druid by David R Slayton - David R Slayton - 5/5 star
I LOVE this series. Love love love love. Absolute must read. If you're a fan of KD Edwards's The Tarot Sequence, this series is right up your alley. It seems like there will be more after this initial trilogy, and there's also a spinoff book coming soon which I'm super excited for. Read them!!

Title: Adam Binder
Author: David R. Slayton
Series or standalone: series
Publication year: 2020
Genres: fiction, fantasy, LGBT+, paranormal, romance
Blurb: Guthrie was a good place to be from, but it wasn't a great place to live...not when you were like Adam. Adam Binder hasn't spoken to his brother in years, not since Bobby had him committed to a psych ward for hearing voices. When a murderous spirit possesses Bobby's wife and disrupts the perfect life he's built away from Oklahoma, he's forced to ask for his little brother's help. Adam is happy to escape the trailer park and get the chance to say "I told you so"...but he arrives in Denver to find the local magicians dead. It isn't long before Adam is the spirit's next target. To survive the confrontation, he'll have to risk bargaining with powers he'd rather avoid, including his first love: the elf who broke his heart. The Binder brothers don't realise that they're unwitting pawns in a game played by immortals. Death herself wants the spirit's head, and she's willing to destroy their family to reap it.

Does anyone love the supernatural for
It's tangled family dynamics
Gritty haunted Americana setting(yes I relize it was filmed in BC and that Texas never looks like Texas in the show)
Urban fantasy magical politicing
Juxtaposition between trama and some truly funny jokes
Gayness
Muscle cars
But wish it was
More compact
More consistent
Explicitly gay
Didn't kill of ALL of its female charecters
Actually payed attention to seanery so that Denver looks different from oklahoma?
Suggest that maybe what this family actually needs is a bit more therapy?
Then have I got the book series for you.

Hazel Hill is Gonna Win This One by Maggie Horne In this funny, feminist, and queer middle grade debut, seventh-grader Hazel Hill is too busy for friends. No, really. I'm just gonna keep track of somethings I think are gonna happen in the book I'm reading...
Current book: Deadbeat Druid (book #3 in the Adam Binder series) by David R Slayton
* this thought happened somewhere in book 2 but I think it more now.... I think Adam (or maybe it makes more sense that it be Vic) replaces Sarah (I'm reading the audiobook idk if that is the correct spelling) as death
Chapter 3 (Not gonna pretend to spell this person's name cuz I'm not 100% sure what there name is anyway...) the page elf (Adam's opposite) is definitely coming with
(Vran better be ok)
Chapter 14 Momma!!!!! Is Mel Sarah's daughter!?!
Chapter 16 (this is random) Spider gets them out
Chapter 21 Robert Sr. goes to the sea, maybe Mel takes over for Sarah? I don't think they fix the demon problem also the way to kill John is definitely shoving him into the sea
Chapter 22 oh shit the reaper blade can kill I bet
Chapter 23 fucking Silver!!! (Literally only heard the voice say they can't go after Adam, but it was Silvers voice) oops I was wrong it's Vran
Chapter 24 we just spent 3/4 of the book getting back together and leaving hell and now they have to go back, rescue Adam and kill more demons? I'm very worri3d how this book ends...
Chapter 26 "why are you a cowboy?" "Well they're hot right?" Damn I also wish Adam and Jimmy got to meet in life
Final thoughs: good book, actually I love how the underworld is done also I would KILL for a spin off with Bran (or any of them but I feel like his story was set up for a spin off)

Deadbeat Druid (Adam Binder #3) by David R. Slayton | Book Review
Full disclosure I've been sitting on my Deadbeat Druit review since January that's when I reread all three books that I...enjoyed but it might not sound like it #LGBTBooks #UrbanFantasy #bookreview #Books #ReadersCommunity #BookTwitter #BookLovers
The living cannot be allowed to infect the dead. Adam Binder has lost what matters most to him. Having finally learned the true identity of the warlock preying on his family, what was supposed to be a final confrontation with the fiend instead became a trap that sent Vic into the realm of the dead, where none living are meant to be. Bound by debt, oath, and love, Adam blazes his own trail into…

ARC Review - Deadbeat Druid
Tonight I'm reviewing ✨DEADBEAT DRUID✨ by David R. Slayton! "The author captured the loneliness, fear, and anger associated with growing up queer in deep rural America... while accepting that his past was a part of him but didn't have to define him." 4⭐
Hello, everyone! I just finished reading Deadbeat Druid by David R. Slayton earlier this afternoon. So, this review is coming hot off the presses. 🙂 I’m so glad I made the time to read this series this year. It was definitely worth prioritizing. The living cannot be allowed to infect the dead.Adam Binder has lost what matters most to him. Having finally learned the true identity of the warlock…

Note
bg3 companions ranking?
10. Halsin. I have no principles and can fully admit if it was a relentlessly horny grizzled older butch WOMAN bear druid i would be like this is the greatest video game character of all time but as it stands he just doesn’t compel me much
9. Minsc. he’s so fun but the whole thing is one singular bit no variety.
8. Karlach. Listen on paper “literally gideon nav but a tiefling” should do more for me i don’t know why it doesn’t. that being said if we were real life coworkers i WOULD want to be besties with her.
7. Shadowheart. yeah she’s alright.
6. Minthara. minthyyyyy everything she says is profoundly arrogant and ludicrously fascist she is so so funny. i love her absolute unwavering commitment to cognitive dissonance and being wrong all the time. my close friend minthara is the funniest person i know.
5. Wyll. he may be a terrible monster hunter because he just keeps forgiving and befriending and maybe falling in love with them but that’s just because he’s got a good heart. i wish the dev team liked him as much as i do. also mr. of frontiers we have got to do something about your father
4. Gale. D1 yapper just like me for real. can’t believe i ever found him annoying and disliked him simply for being a corny ass nerd because i have come all the way around on that. also i like that he has a fun earring even if it IS mystra merch.
3. Astarion. i too am an annoying homosexual shit-starter who is constantly just doing a bit. they put the most effort into his writing and character so he is really by default one of the strongest. also there’s just too damn many locks in this game to not need him nearby
2. Jaheira. love her terrible luck and gravitational force of a personality and slight weirdo mannerisms and fondness for clowns and deadbeat milf ways. wish she had been a companion earlier but she is so fun to take into baldur’s gate.
1. Lae’zel. she’s BEEN my favorite she’s in every single party i have i love her complete and total seriousness i love that she’s a weirdo and i love how much she grows and changes and develops optimism and hope. what can i say. real lae’zelheads know

DND AU: A New Look! (+New Characters)
I decided to revamp the look of the DND AU crew! Underneath the art will be a snippet about the character in the AU as to give you some insight on the plans I have for it
Tumblr media
With her memories stolen by the false king, she wandered for the longest time, her destruction of property being seen as a threat. She was imprisoned for a few short months before she was being transferred to another dungeon... Until Jax accidentally stole her cell alongside many other goods. She now hides in plain sight as a jester for the fantastical airship circus under the name 'Pomni'- one that she doesn't know if it's her real name or not
Tumblr media
Once just a simple seamstress in a town, her simple life was ruined for the worse when a mouth faced demon had appeared and set the village into chaos, leaving some burnt and others cursed- Ragatha being one of the poor cursed souls. Her body was eating away at her when she was running from the town as she fell down, the god Tyr finding her and helping her. She turned to help the god, becoming a cleric under Tyr's name. She joined the circus later on, becoming a sort of magician for the airship
Tumblr media
Adopted son of Luna, Jax has never known anything outside of the airship. He's lived his whole life there, seeing the world pass him by as he just let it happen. He learned quickly how to pickpocket, lockpick, steal, bargain, basically anything to help give more money for him and his family. He even kept it up when he knew they had more then enough money to spare
Tumblr media
Once a well renowned bard and, Gangle couldn't be any happier. However, that would change when the false king wanted to test a new artifact known as 'The Tragedy Mask', a mask that latched onto Gangle's face and couldn't be removed. The false king sent a bounty for the mask, leaving Gangle to leave her bard life behind, even becoming a ranger in the process. However, her acrobatic work in the airship circus makes her feel better
Tumblr media
The past of this man isn't known well. Kinger seems to be obsessed with the idea of being being a king, even to the point where he won't respond to ANYTHING else but 'Kinger'. He loves bugs, and it seems to be the only reason for him to be a druid. Although timid and flighty, his bugs seem to entertain the crowd at the circus enough
Tumblr media
Not many knows about Zooble's creator, a seemingly mad man who wished to make a war forged with no budget. Powered by a multitude of magic infused crystals, the instability of it all made the accidental death of their own creator not much of a shock. Almost like a freakshow performance, Zooble just wanders around the airship to 'perform' and let others react to them or even convince people to give them money for 'tricks' (they're just war forge functions)
Tumblr media
Once the king's head bard, but now a deadbeat who lost their original job (and may have been cursed with lycanthrope by the false king), Kaufmo is the head clown, storyteller, AND announcer for the airship circus. Quite the handful of jobs, hmm? Despite him being tired all the time, he's not actually that bad to be around
Tumblr media
The two heads of the Fantastical Airship Circus, these two sisters of Summer and Luna are the ringleaders of the place, doing their best to keep the crowd entertained. Luna is more kind and understanding while Summer is stricter and to the books, however they seem to get along nonetheless
Tumblr media
The False King himself, Caine is a demon in disguise- taking the place of the true king to give himself more power then any other demon. His ringleader get up is both a mockery as it is a love for the art of a circus- especially since everyone around him seem to be in one
DND AU stuff will be coming out slowly and surely! I love this AU and I hope you do as well

TW for black and white medically-inaccurate burn gore. Dragon fire is nasty, and I got a bit detailed. But it’s, like, artistic gnarl. I marked it for violence JIC, but I think I’m being overly cautious. It doesn’t trigger my squeamishness, and I’ve got a very low tolerance for gore, but use your own discretion.
My D&D character’s parents are major NPCs in our campaign, and they insisted on tagging along to help with the final battle against an ancient red dragon. Mom (Izira, halfling Druid) got OHKO’ed by the fire breath along with like 5 other favorite NPCs. Luckily, dad (Kaddik, orc bard) was there to save everyone with a clutch mass healing word. He got everyone up and carried to safety.
Over the course of our 3 year campaign, Kaddik has gone from a deadbeat loser who abandoned his kid and babymama to a goddamn hero. He is my favorite NPC in the campaign.
Also they’re hot and are totally not manufactured specifically to be OTP bait for me. My DM knows me too well.
