What do the DS9 crew call each other?
>View the raw data >Season 2 Observations post
Season One Observations
Sisko:
Is most likely to introduce himself as "Commander Benjamin Sisko" (7 times), or as "Benjamin Sisko" (5 times).
Is more likely to be called "Commander" than "Sir" by Kira (35:8), Odo (15:2) and Quark (9:0).
>> Kira does not call him Sir until e13; Odo only in e16 (when harassed by Lwxana)
Is more likely to be called "Sir" than "Commander" by Miles (66:20)
>> Even more likely E1-9 (35:5), only twice as likely e10-19 (31:15)
Is just as likely to be called "Sir" as Commander by Julian (22:20)
Dax exclusively calls and refers to him as Benjamin.
Otherwise is referred to as Sisko (esp. by Odo) or Commander Sisko.
Sisko talks to everyone the most.
Kira:
Is most likely to introduce herself as "Major Kira Nerys" (3 times).
Is most likely to be called Major by everyone. In the first half, O'Brien also calls her "Sir" in a few episodes; Bashir and Dax call her "sir" once.
Is most likely to be referred to be others as "Major Kira".
Is occasionally called or referred to as "Kira", but not often.
Odo:
Is most likely to introduce himself by mentioning he is "Chief of Security" (2 times).
Is called "Odo" more than "Constable" by Kira (9:6) and Quark (15:1)
Is called "Constable" more than "Odo" by Sisko (16:11)
Is usually referred to as Odo
Julian:
Is called "Doctor" most by Sisko (43:7 "Dr Bashir"), and exclusively so by Kira (5x), Odo (5x) and Quark (1x).
Is exclusively called and referred to as "Julian" by Dax.
Is most often referred to as "Dr Bashir". Sisko also refers to him as "our doctor" and "my doctor", and Sisko, Kira, Odo and O'Brien all refer to him as "Bashir" on occasion.
Miles calls him "Doctor" once, "Julian" four times (all in Episode 13, after Julian has asked for this), and "Sir" three times (again, all in E13).
Dax:
Most frequently refers to self as "Dax".
Sisko is most likely to call her "Dax", but also "Lieutenant" in very formal situations. He calls her "Old Man" 4 times, in e1, 7, 9 and 10.
Julian will call her "Jadzia" (4x) or "Dax" (4x), depending on how casual the situation is.
Miles calls her "Lieutenant" exclusively (3x), as does Kira (1x).
She is usually referred to as "Dax" (9x) or "Lieutenant Dax" (10x) by everyone, or by Julian as "Jadzia" (2x).
Miles:
Most likely to call himself "O'Brien".
Miles is most often called "Chief" by everyone, although it takes a while for that to start. (Kira and Sisko begin calling him "Chief" in E4.)
In first half, is almost just as likely to be called "Mister O'Brien" as "Chief" by Sisko (10:16) and Kira (7:7); from episode 10 that changes to 3:10 for Sisko and 0:1 for Kira.
Is most likely referred to as "O'Brien".
Wow, that took less time than I thought it would when I began this - I'm definitely looking forward to seeing if any trends continue or change going forwards!

So actually, i don't engage with this all that much because I'm an adult with a job and bills, but lets do it a little bit. I know that there are edge cases but I feel like 90% of pro-ship anti-ship discourse probably comes down to people using the word "Ship" in two different ways. I'm gonna use OFMD and IWTV ships as examples because it's what's at the forefront of my brain, but this point is applicable across fandom.
So basically. I think that the Anti side of the conversation (those that are reasonable anyway) have a much narrower definition of what a ship even is than those on the Pro side of the conversation (those that are reasonable anyway). So A ship is very basically a relationship, or the desire for fans to see 2 (or more) characters in a relationship. And that's super vague, right? A relationship could be anything. So I think what's happening is that some people mean ship as in "I want these two characters to be romantically involved, and I want them to be end game" and that's all that shipping means for them, but another person might look at a relationship like Loustat, with all it's problems and abuse and say "Oh I ship them" not to mean "I think they're cute together and I want them to be romantically involved forever" but instead to mean "I find their relationship very interesting and I want to see more of it. I am examining them, you see." And a third person might exclusively mean that "these two characters have a dynamic that would translate very well into exactly the kind of gross nasty sex I am into" And all three of these people are using the same word.
And some times these three people are the same person and then it gets interesting, because I (me actually) might use ship to refer to gentlebeard, who I think are cute together, who I want to be end game and who I think should be romantically involved forever, Blackhands, who I want to watch scream at each other and then I want Ed to kick Izzy to the curb because he can do better than that, but I would very much like them to shout at each other and make each other worse and fuck before that happens because I think it's interesting, and Calicobeard, who I think it would be hot if they fucked. But I'm using the same word for all three of those.
Now it get's complicated when we add explicitly abusive relationships in. Because then if one person is using ship to mean "they're so cute together" and another person is using ship to mean "I think they're very interesting and I'm using fanfiction to work out my feelings about them, so I'm creating ship content for them" and the ship is objectively a ship that no one should ever say "they're so cute together" about, person a might get offended that person b ships them, meanwhile person b doesn't think what person a thinks that they think, so then they get offended back that person a is telling them what they can and can't write.

so um… ghul… I need advice (if you can give it)?
So you’re a college professor right? Well, for a while now I’ve really been thinking about going back to school (I’m 25, by the way) because I’d also like to become a college professor, ideally in creative writing/something in the writing field.
So I was wondering if there was any advice/warnings/general information you might be able to share that you think would be useful.
You don’t need to spend too much time answering. I don’t want to inconvenience you. But I could just really use any words of wisdom since this is something I really really want but am scared I’ll be blindsided by something (I did a little college back when I was 18 but ended up having to leave due to personal reasons, so I have some experience on what to expect, but not a ton).
Anyway, hope you’re having a good night.
Hi! Always happy to give advice and warnings about the dumpster fire that is academia, so I definitely don't mind the question or feel inconvenienced. I should clarify though that I'm a PhD candidate, not an actual professor--so basically, I'm a very advanced graduate student who teaches instead of taking classes. But, being a professor is the goal and I'm pretty well versed in the ups and downs of pursuing an academic job.
And I have warnings. So many warnings!
The first thing to consider is just the amount of time it takes to become a professor. While you can get some jobs with only a Master's degree, they're few and far between, and especially precarious. For anything secure, you basically have to have a PhD. That means 4-5 years of undergrad, assuming you're starting basically from scratch, and then at least another five years for the doctoral degree. Keep in my mind that most people take longer than that to finish a PhD, too--I'm in my eighth year of grad school (sixth year in my actual program because I did a master's beforehand), and the average time to degree for my department is seven years. I know people who took ten. I may take ten!
Second, the academic job market is terrible. In many, many ways. There are basically two options--tenure track and adjunct. Tenure track pays better, comes with stability, and is probably what most people think of when they think of being a professor. Adjunct positions are short-term teaching contracts that only last for a semester, and often pay worse. (Imagine cobbling together a full-time job by teaching multiple classes a couple universities to make $30k a year with few benefits, if you're lucky).
Tenure track jobs have more stability, benefits, etc., but are also really fucking competitive. It's not unusual to have hundreds of applicants for one position, and even then it likely still won't pay as much as most other jobs requiring that level of education. On top of that, you generally have to also hustle to public papers, present at conferences, etc., just to be competitive for these jobs. And, as a bonus, it's almost guaranteed that you'll have to relocate to find a position, so you could easily find yourself moving to Arkansas to make $45k a year after a decade of schooling. Things are especially competitive and underpaid in the humanities, like writing-related fields, too.
Now, it's not like it could hurt to pursue it as an option, but going back to undergrad just for that being the goal is maybe not the best idea; it's definitely better to go in with a few possible paths in mind. Because it's a big time commitment for very little guaranteed payoff, and that's without even considering that just getting through grad school is fucking hard, and pretty much guaranteed to leave you with a lot of debt unless you have a partner to financially support you. And there are things that are great about it--you get a lot of autonomy, and I really love teaching so I have a great time--but I also pretty much agree with the advice I was given before starting, which was: if you can picture yourself doing anything else, do that instead.

It's now some time ago, since I posted here. I mean, nobody seems to read my stuff anyways, so it seems to don't matter 😅
Anyway I want to give a update on myself and things around me.
My weight loss journey continued. Meanwhile I lost over 55 kilos since last year and even build muscle. I even developed a slight hint of abs 😂
I cut my beard completely down to a goatee. I felt, that I was hiding behind the full beard. You know, it became kinda a mask for me. A shield to hide behind. Now I lowered at least that shield and discovered, that a young and kinda handsome face was hiding behind it.
And I start to let my hair grow out on the sides too. My goal is a haircut like Health Ledger, Brandon Lee or Ville Valo had. It definitely will look great on me.
Unfortunately my face and new body wasn't helping to find a new partner. That is the most frustrating part, you know? Most other gays are just looking for fun, a non-monogamous relationship and such. Especially that guys in my near. Plus mostly guys over 50 try to hit me up, while I just look for guys between 21 and 35 and have that written in my profile also.
To be honest: Being alone makes me kinda sad and feeling like I don't deserve to be happy.
It's a "problem" that I am not into bears and older guys. But bears always remind me of my dad and I don't feel attracted to my dad romantically or worse 😅 And similar with older dudes, especially since I don't feel like my age.
Honestly: I feel like in my mid 20th, especially since I wasted my 20th on my ex wife. I just NOW have my glow up and try to put my life together. At the same time, it feels like time is running out to find a partner. You know, I do not want to become that old guy creeping up to younger folks like these guys who write to me now.
To be honest: At the end, I kinda gave up already. If every Jack has his Jill, then I am Zachary 😂
Besides of that: I quit my therapy. Not because I think I am above that and don't need it. No no, I definitely need therapy. I quit it, because my therapist was an arsehole. She not wanted to help me getting along with my trauma. Instead, she wanted to help the insurance company saving money on me. I tried to tell her about shit that destroyed me, her reaction was "But that shouldn't stop you to go to work. How many job applications did you wrote? Where did you applied to?" and such. Totally ignoring stuff which is bothering me and acting like she isn't my therapist but a worker from the job department of government. That really made me feel like "Ok, if even my therapist don't care about me, why should anyone else?". The final moment, which made me quit was, when I told her about my strong fear looking at the political situation in Germany, with growing percentage of Nazis and shit. I told her I fear more violence and such. Her reaction "No, Nazis won't harm any queer people. It's only the foreigners who harm queer folks, I read a statistics about it.". Like ... WHAT?! I have friends who got attacked by Nazis, pride events received hate and you only have to look online to see the hate from the Nazis towards the queer community. Idk where she read the statistics, maybe on the AfD homepage. Or she is one of them too, Idk.
So all in all it wasn't a help at all and only fed my trust issues even further. Now I can't even trust therapists, which makes it kinda impossible for me to seek help.
But something positive: I quit drinking about a year ago. Not 100%. But it's now only one bottle of beer in a few weeks, which is really nothing. And my January was, in fact, completely alcohol free. That stuff helps me to get my body in a better shape and will help my mental health too.
And I kinda "rediscovered" some music. I listen again a lot to HIM and VV (Ville Valo). I was a giant fan in the 1990th/2000th and kinda stopped following a few years ago. Even though I had a hughe crush on Ville and still have. He is the only older guy I would like to be with 😅 But it isn't just about him (pun not intended 😂), it's the whole music and lyrics. Love can hurt, but at the same time, it can be something absolutely beautiful too. And at all: Self growth is important.
So ... what else? Idk 😅 I try to be somehow positive, find a job again and to make my own luck.
By the way: In the pics you see how I look now 😂

Hi I'm going into college next yr what should I expect majoring in psychology and going to a new school and new environment? I rlly know nothing abt how it works compared to high school. is it true professors are more chill than high school teachers? and is it true that you can take afternoon classes? I've tried asking these questions and getting help with college essays I'm planning on applying to more than one but my guidance counselor keeps blowing me off so any advice/tips/info?
First of all, that's super exciting! I loved being in college and I hope that you will too. In terms of your actual question, I'll answer the specific questions you asked first and then give some general advice.
When it comes to professors, it depends, but they generally are more chill than high school teachers, especially as you get to higher-level classes. In high school, part of the teacher's job is to help you learn life skills like how to meet deadlines and how to be professional. In college, professors generally assume you're a fully-formed person and will let you sink or swim on your own. They're usually more accepting of late work and are often more relaxed than high school teachers are. I think I've mentioned this on here before, but one of my best friends now used to be my professor when I was at university.
It's definitely true that you can take all afternoon classes (at least, if the classes you need in order to graduate are available in the afternoon). You can also schedule all of your classes for certain days of the week, which is especially handy if you're planning on getting a job or an internship at some point. Try to craft a schedule that works with your patterns instead of against them- if you're someone who naturally wakes up at 10am, scheduling afternoon classes may be a good idea because you'll be more engaged and learn more.
In terms of some advice on university applications and essays:
Apply to safety schools. It's good to have options when applying to universities, including universities that you know are a "sure thing". Too often, I think we get stuck on this idea that our “dream school” is the only one for us and that no other experience will be as good, but that’s not really true. Different schools are just different paths that we could take, and while some of them will be better for us than others, most of them are what we make of them.
Write about something that's important to you. This may seem obvious, but if you write about what you think the admissions department wants to hear instead of what you want to say, it will come across in your essay. And do your best to be specific. Don't just describe an event- reflect on it. Talk about how what you're writing about made you feel, how it changed the way you think, whether it had an impact on your priorities and values, etc.
Talk about yourself. This is your chance to sell the school on you as a person- the important things about you that they can't learn from your GPA or extracarricular activities. What kind of person are you? What are you passionate about? What drives you and motivates you? These are the things that they're interested in learning about you through your essay.
Focus on details. It's easier for a reader to connect with small, poignant details about your life than it is for them to connect with a general idea. If you love music, talking about a musician or piece that's your favorite and why it's special to you is much easier to connect with than saying "I like music, being a musician is an important part of my life."
Bring the school into your essay. What links the schools you're applying to to the topic you're discussing in the essay? Why do you think this particular school is right for you based on the person you are, the topics you're looking to explore, the environment in which you thrive, etc.? Admissions departments don't just want to know who you are as a person; they want to know why you would be a good fit for their school in particular.
Talk about the future and focus on growth. What did you learn from the experiences you're talking about in your essay? How will that shape the way you do things in the future? How did it impact your decisions about the colleges you wanted to apply to, or the field you want to study?
Make sure to read your essay out loud and, if you can, have someone else read it, too. Reading out loud makes it easier to catch mistakes and to identify sentences that sound clunky.
In terms of more general advice about university:
Make your classes a priority, and actually go to them unless you have a good reason not to (illness, burnout, emergency, etc.). It can be really easy to let classes slip because you're generally not forced to be there, but it's much easier to understand what's happening if you regularly hear the professor explain it.
Alongside that, participate in class and go to office hours. Just being a face that the professor recognizes can give your grade a substantial boost. Office hours are especially useful because very few people attend them, so it's like having a private tutoring session with the professor. This is also great because professors can help you get jobs once you graduate.
Meet with your academic advisor on a regular basis. If you don't, you may be in for a nasty shock when you think you're about to graduate and realize you're missing a required class that you didn't know about.
Take classes that aren't relevant to your major. University gives you a chance to explore topics you're interested in, even if they're not relevant to what you're studying, and it's great to take advantage of that if you can. Doing this can help you find subjects that you really love, and it can also help you to expand your worldview.
Take advantage of everything your school offers. Many schools have things like free tutoring sessions, people who will help you write papers, career counselors, resume writing workshops, job/internship placement, therapists, discounted or free tickets to museums and other cultural events, etc. that people rarely use. See what your school offers and use as much of it as you can.
Do internships as much as possible and network as much as you can. Your degree by itself won't get you a job- the people you met during your time at university will. Internships can turn into full-time jobs, but even if they don't, that work experience looks great on a resume.
Find time management strategies that work for you. One of the most important things to learn in college is how to prioritize tasks, get yourself to get work done efficiently and effectively and how to meet deadlines. You may find that having a physical planner works best for you, or that you like keeping things in your calendar on your phone, or that you prefer an app like Notion to manage everything you have to do. Figuring out what strategy works best for you will be super helpful once you graduate.
Work smarter, not harder. Download apps like Grammarly that will review your spelling, grammar, and punctuation. Figure out which classes and assignments need you to put in 100% and which you can give 80%. Study with people in your class instead of studying alone. Know which readings you can skim, and which ones you have to read in full. University will be an overwhelming amount of work if you're trying to give everything 100% all of the time.
Talk to strangers. Especially at the beginning of university, nobody feels like they have friends, so they're super open to people who make efforts to be their friends. It can be as easy as saying hi to someone in your classes, organizing a study group, talking to someone waiting next to you in a line, or even just leaving your dorm room door open (I did this one. It was very effective).
Get involved. Academics are an important part of school, of course, but so are the social aspects and extracarricular activities. There are few times in your life where you'll have as much flexibility to explore everything you might be interested in. Join a student film or student play if you think you might be interested in acting. Learn how to use a 3d printer or a woodworking lathe. Take a painting class. Join a pickup pickleball league. Agree to play the tuba in the marching band even though you've never picked one up before (that was me). If you don't like whatever the activity is, you can always quit, but if you love it, you've found something you'll keep doing for the rest of your life.
On the flip side, it's okay to give yourself a break. Socializing and getting involved and going to class is important, but not at the expense of your mental and physical health. Sometimes, it's a good thing to take the day off and marathon a terrible TV show with one of your friends because it helps you recharge.
Alongside that, make sure you're forming good habits. At university, it's tempting to only eat all your favorite junk foods or to never sleep or to blow all of your money, because for the first time in your life, you have the freedom to make your own choices. But the habits you form at university will be hard to break, and your long-term health and well-being will rely on you having good habits. Make sure you're sleeping for 7-9 hours every night, find a form of exercise that you actually enjoy doing, learn some basic cooking, cleaning, and budgeting skills, find ways to reduce your stress that actually work for you, etc. You'll thank yourself for it later.
Everyone is drinking less and having less sex than you expect. This will depend on what school you go to, but in the US, about 53% of university students ages 18 to 22 drank alcohol in the past month and about 33 percent engaged in binge drinking (5 or more drinks) during that same time frame. That means that 27% aren't drinking regularly, and about 20% of university students don't drink at all. Meanwhile, this survey found that 40% of university students were virgins, and 24% of students have never "hooked up" with someone. That's not to say that you should or shouldn't do any of these things; it's just to say that if you don't want to do them, you're not the odd one out, and most people won't treat you any differently for it. If you do want to do these things, make sure you're doing them safely, with people you actually like and trust.
If you're going to do drugs, do them as safely as you can. Make sure you test the drugs so you know what you're taking, do them in a safe space, have a sober companion in case anything goes wrong, don't mix drugs with other drugs or with alcohol, go slow and take less than the recommended amount, write everything down that you've taken and never lie to paramedics, and know the signs of overdose. If you can, have an overdose treatment (such as Nalaxone for opioids) on hand.
If you have other questions or need advice on the application process, I'm super happy to help in any way that I can. I know how intimidating university can be, especially if you feel like you don't have people in your real life who can help you navigate it, so I'm here to be a resource if you need it.

Hello, I hope I don't bother you, but... If the applications are open... I could ask how the Wammy Boys (L, Near, Mello) and if you want Light) would react to hearing that their s/o is one of the best detectives of the world along with L?, I hope it's clear... If you don't want to do it, you're within your rights, but if you do... Thank you very much!.
heya :) I appreciate the ask and you're certainly not bothering me, but just want to clarify for the future that requests which fall mostly into the "character x reader" type category (where the DN boys react to a hypothetical significant other) aren't normally the kind of headcanons I like to write. I'm just not really that good at it or comfortable with it for some reason... maybe because I usually think that this particular cast of characters would normally be pretty insensitive and act like big jerks, hahaha. My usual preference is about how the characters might interact with each other (if a shippier sort of ask) or just about how they might act in general other kinds of situations, if that makes sense. I know there are other blogs out there taking requests for these kinds of asks that do a good job with them, too! But hmm let me think...
L: His reaction might depend a bit on who is telling him that, and what sort of situation it's in. I think he's pretty proud of himself for building up that prestigious title all by himself and for having the uniquely powerful role that he has, and probably would not normally like the idea that somebody was being put on the same pedestal as he was, unless maybe he was the one deciding that they were deserving of that recognition himself. If he was the one deciding that they deserved that recognition then he'd probably be pretty smooth and complimentary about it. But if he wasn't the one deciding it then he'd possibly completely not agree, and maybe even find a way to prove that it clearly wasn't the case and that he was still better than they were at being the best detective ever, lol
NEAR: He'd probably be supportive of them and happy for them if it was somebody he really liked and wanted to see do well (eg. Mello after the timeskip, because Near seemingly was basically Mello's number one fan and biggest supporter by then). I don't think he'd see them as a threat or competition so much as see them as somebody he could hopefully collaborate with to get things done as L. It wouldn't be the case if they were somebody he really disliked or didn't respect much though (eg. Light). He'd probably say something very snarky and withering about them instead of anything congratulatory or nice.
MELLO: I am actually not sure, because Mello is one of the characters I relate to the least. I think of Mello as super competitive about this specific thing, so it's hard for me to imagine him not feeling a bit threatened by news like that if he was still really wanting to be the successor to L himself. I'd hope he'd be supportive and nice but my gut tells me that would probably set him off in some way that would possibly cause a rift between him and his S/O, hahaha
LIGHT: He'd only be happy about it if HE was the one being given that title, I'm fairly certain. He puts L on a big untouchable pedestal in his own mind, so he definitely thinks he's the only one who should actually be worthy of wearing L's crown as well. He'd probably react similarly to how he acted all disappointed by L's successors and not agree that they were on the same level as L, no matter how impressive they actually were

language of the chronically ill
lately, it's been so good to hear folks close to me call me "honey" or "my love." maybe these are little things, but they feel like big things right now. lots of processing under the cut.
CN: mental health, chronic illness(es), processing, medical systems, medical trauma.
i had an appointment with my PCP today, via phone. she's in her own private practice (concierge service) now, so she's much easier to get a hold of--and i can spend more time talking to her instead of rushing through 15 minutes. we spent an hour on the phone this morning. i cried more than once. i'm glad i made this appointment.
we talked about infections and inflammation, since i'm going through both right now, which is likely due to orencia. i have to go for labs today so we don't delay whatever treatment comes next.
we then talked about anti-psychotics. she said she really wishes they had a different/better name. she agrees with my psychiatrist that it's time to at least try. we talked through the stigma, my cultural background (latinos don't take meds ever), and my own concern about adding more meds for my liver to process. but she was very reassuring and patient.
next up was the issues i'm having with hEDS, namely the stuff going on with my lower back/sacrum/SI joint/pelvis. PT is helping, but sometimes the pain is very intense. she doesn't think an x-ray is necessary at this time, but she will check in with my PT and talk more about my progress/treatment. i will definitely stick with this PT from now on. as long as insurance allows it.
we talked a lot about SSDI and LTD, and how these are big, huge, tremendous stressors. a lot is changing. a lot is up in the air. there are giant stressors on my already tired mind and body. she reassured me that i have put together the strongest application i could for SSDI, and that LTD should go through. she agreed that this whole process is invasive and uncomfortable.
my hEDS doctor and my liver doctor declined to write letters for SSDI, which sucks, but my PCP said it's common for PhDs to do that. she also said it's okay, i don't need their letters, just their notes and imaging. i'm not holding a grudge against those guys, i would never want a doctor to do something they didn't feel comfortable doing. i am grateful that they've kept accurate notes over the years. or that i was honest and didn't mask. it's always tough to hear "no" but it was easier to process it with my PCP.
she also reminded me that paperwork is part of a doctor's job. so i shouldn't feel guilty for asking my rheum etc. to fill out LTD paperwork. it's part of a patient's care.
then we went into the waters of medication. i'm rationing my ozempic right now because i have no idea how this new insurance works. once i do understand it, i can bump up to 1 mg. i started T again, using the damn gel that smells like paint and takes as long to dry. hopefully, getting my hormones back up to a moderate level will help a lot of things. i need to circle back with my endo by the end of march.
i gotta go for labs in two hours. i slept 4 hours and they were not good 4 hours. it's definitely a pain day, so i'm going to staple my TENS unit to my back. the weather changed and that never helps. i'm glad i have massage tomorrow and acupuncture friday.
maybe i will try to nap before labs.
my PCP did ask me if i'm writing again. i was happy to say yes, yes i am. she asked me not to be so hard on myself with the black and white thinking that i shouldn't be writing about fictional people and instead living my own life. she said the world needs stories. and if i can experience naples through writing right now, then do it.
a lot to process today. i think i also need a break from my doctors and the insurance stuff. hopefully that can happen soon.
once again, thank you for being a safe space to process all of this. it is time for the TENS unit, my recliner, and some sleep. i'm rereading back pocket too, which helps.

Please say more about aspirated medial stops, I was talking with my brother in law the other day about how we (Californians) don't say t's in the middle of words and I'm really curious about why that is and if this is a universal thing in all accents of English now
Disclaimer: I do have a Bachelor's in linguistics, but I got it more than a decade ago so it is possible that some of the information in this post will be misremembered or out of date.
tl;dr
Knowing how to pronounce t in different locations in different dialects is a nightmare. Old-fashioned British Received Pronunciation pronounced t in the middle of words, but there's a UK language drift called T-glottalization in which ts except at the start of words are often being replaced with glottal stops? It's really obvious in lower-status dialects but it's been creeping into RP as well.
American English usually does a weird muscle flex called a "flap" or a "tap" that's something like a really short d, or a single roll of a rolled r. I think there are some UK dialects that use this tap as well.
I belieeeeeve that Indian English usually pronounces word-medial ts, but I haven't run an actual analysis on the applicable coworkers' speech because that'd be kind of creepy?
No idea about Australia or New Zealand.
As far as I know, there's no special reason why these particular drifts are happening. Linguistic drift and accent shifts are just something that happens with living languages. If anything, we have immensely slowed the natural process of language change through the invention and widespread teaching of standardized writing.
Glossary
Sorry, I tried doing this without a glossary but I kept having to do weird info cul-de-sacs to explain myself. I've ordered them according to approximately when they'll come up?
lol I failed so hard at this, about halfway through the post I started using words without putting them in the glossary first and man idk I've been working on this post for 4 hours now and I don't want to go back through and put definitions for some of this shit, sorry
Phoneme - A single language sound, as it is stored in your brain. Represented with slashes around it, e.g. /t/.
Phone - A language sound as it actually comes out of your mouth. Represented with square brackets around it, e.g. [t].
Phonology - The study of speech sounds, from internal representation to external expression, but not including the study of how they are physically created in the mouth (that's phonetics). Not to be confused with phrenology, the racist pseudoscience of head shape.
Word - Can have a few different meanings in a linguistic context. In this post, will usually refer to either a lexeme or a phonological word. You should be able to tell from the context.
Phonological Word - What you probably think of when you think of a "word." A unit of speech that you could naturally pause on either side of, but could not naturally pause inside.
Lexeme/Semantic Word - A single phonological word and its attached meaning; or, phrase of multiple phonological words, which holds a meaning which is different than the sum of its parts. For example, "Carry the bucket" is not a single lexeme; but "Kick the bucket" is.
Voiced/Voiceless - A sound is voiced if you use your vocal cords to make it, and voiceless if you don't.
Stop - Also called a plosive. A stop is a kind of consonant you make by stopping all air flow. The stops English uses are p, b, t, d, k, g, and the glottal stop.
Aspiration - A puff of air following a sound, usually a voiceless stop. In phonetic notation, it is indicated by a superscript h following the consonant, like [pʰ].
IPA - International Phonetic Alphabet. A standard set of symbols based on the Roman alphabet and used to refer to roughly the same sounds regardless of language.
Glottal stop - A stop which is performed not by your tongue, as in most stops, but by your vocal cords. Think of the word "Uh-oh" - the way you completely stop airflow after the "Uh" instead of just letting it flow into the "oh." That's a glottal stop.
Praat - An audio analysis program tailored specifically for viewing waveforms of speech sounds.
INFODUMP TIME
So the thing about saying words is that the ideas of sounds that you have in your head ("phonemes") don't translate one-to-one to the sounds that come out of your mouth ("phones"); and the ways that these sounds get modified vary between different dialects.
Please keep in mind that when you try to speak slowly or clearly, the sounds that you make change. Linguists are primarily interested in natural speech patterns, not what we do when we're trying to enunciate.
Tater-Tot
Let's take the lexeme tater-tot, because it's the first word I can think of that has all 3 of the major weird things that /t/ does that vary by dialect.
Let's start with the word-initial t. Phonologically there are actually two word-initial t's in tater-tot, the one at the beginning of 'tater,' and the one at the beginning of 'tot.' This is because "tater-tot" is two phonological words despite being one semantic word.
In American and British English, we aspirate our word-initial voiceless stops if they're immediately followed by a vowel, which means we pronounce /p/, /t/, and /k/ as [pʰ], [tʰ] and [kʰ] respectively if they're the first sound in a word (and immediately followed by a vowel). This means we add in a little puff of air following the consonant if it's the first sound in the word. In Indian English, they don't do this - a word-initial /t/ is pronounced [t], without the extra puff of air. To American & British English speakers it can almost sound like they're saying [d], because we're not used to hearing a word-initial /t/ without aspiration.
Next we've got a word-medial t, the second t of "tater." Here, Indian and British RP English speakers pronounce it as a plain [t], with no aspiration. American English speakers pronounce it as what's called a tap or a flap, which is sort of like a half-formed [d] but is actually more like a single roll of a rolled r - and so its IPA symbol is [ɾ]. And many less prestigious British dialects, including Cockney and I believe Scouse, replace it with a glottal stop, with IPA symbol [ʔ].
And our final t is the word-final t of tot. This is a tricky one to peel apart. English generally doesn't release word-final stops - that is, you put your tongue in the correct place to stop airflow to create the stop, but you never actually move your tongue out of the way to "release" the airflow you stopped. So the easy read on the word-final t's pronunciation is that it's [t̚], an unreleased t. However, in many dialects and situations /t/ is replaced with or co-articulated with a glottal stop - for example, after an [n] or an [m], /t/ is almost always pronounced as [ʔ] in English. But unreleased stops after an oral vowel are difficult to tell apart, and if the tongue is in t position while the glottis cuts off airflow - I genuinely don't know.
Tuck/Stuck
These are good for a comparison between an aspirated [tʰ] and an unaspirated [t]. In American English, tuck is [tʰʌk] and stuck is [stʌk].
Truck
American English does weird things with syllable-initial /tr/.
I want to introduce you to the "sh" symbol, ʃ. ʃ is a voiceless postalveolar fricative, which means it's created by air rushing through a narrow space when your tongue is behind the alveolar ridge. Incidentally, when you move your tongue from [t] position to [ɹ̠] position (ɹ̠ being the symbol for the version of non-rolled r that most English dialects use), it will naturally create the ʃ sound as it moves.
We have a special letter combination to the phonemic /tʃ/ in English. It's "ch". As in "change."
You almost certainly pronounce "truck" as [tʃɹ̠ʌk] "chruck" and just don't notice.
So what's going on with Martin?
So first off, Jonny is probably wrong about how the Archivist says "Martin." Complete deletion of the r in that position is standard in RP. I haven't fed The Magnus Archives into Praat or anything, so it's possible he's letting a hint of a rhotic accent bleed in to the Archivist's RP - but I really doubt it.
This isn't unusual! It's very common for people's internal concept of what sounds they mean to make, to get in the way of them accurately identifying what sounds they're actually making. No one thinks they've ever said "chruck" until you point it out to them.
I would probably transcribe the Archivist saying "Martin" as [mɑ:tɪn].
Jonny's attempt at saying "Martin" in an American accent was something more like [mɑ˞ɹ̠tʰɪn]. He did a good job of rhoticizing the vowel, but in his focus on the r completely messed up the second syllable.
I'd transcribe my own pronunciation of "Martin" as something like [mɑ˞ɹ̠ʔn]. It's been my observation that t-glottalization in American English is especially common when adjacent to nasals - and if there's one thing American English likes, it's syllabifying liquids in word-final syllables.
OK I've run out of steam now
This was fun. Sorry about the declining quality of explanation. Please feel free to ask more if you dare to reignite the flames of infodump

Sorry if this isn't the place to ask but I'm in need of advice. I have a canon character I truly adore, but I haven't gotten muse or any opportunity to write them at all. My blog is collecting dust and the fandom is kinda dead at this point. Not to mention, it's hard to find compatible writing partners, especially with how picky I can be. I'm honestly considering deactivating the blog (for the nth time), but I don't want to lose the writing I have. I know I could archive, but I hate having blogs just sitting around.
In short, I really want to write the muse/keep the blog but I'm not getting any incentive to do that.
Hello, Anon, it’s totally the place to ask!
I will say, though, that since finding and keeping muse can be flavored rather personally, I can’t promise that what works for me is going to work for you. I’ll even confess that in over two decades, I’ve never personally lost muse. I don’t know if it is due to underlying, neurodiverse style, fixating, or if it is due to keeping myself continually invested in both my muse and writing regardless of what else is going on. (Probably a combination of both, though, and the things I do to keep myself highly in touch with my muse I’ll be recommending.) I’m definitely happy to try to help, however.
Tumblr media
That really is a very frustrating spot to be in, wanting to write the muse and keep your blog active, but logging in every day to be reminded of what little reason you have to do so. Since we’re drawn to the characters we are for reasons of personal appeal and writing in itself is a pretty personal form of art, it can also feel depressing on top of the frustration.
However, that’s also the good news, in my opinion, because your incentive here is, or can be, yourself.
You were drawn to this character because you connected with them. They mean something to you, you can relate to them, maybe they have qualities (good or bad) that you wish you could experience. Whatever it is, there’s a reason why you had this draw. Writing is like that as well, there’s a reason why this is a hobby that drew you, that you get enjoyment out of. Again, though all art (it doesn’t matter if it is a hobby) has personal bits of the artist in it, writing is uniquely personal. When you write, you’re exploring thoughts and feelings, giving them life in a character that matters to you. I know, all of that sounds really convoluted and hokey, but it’s true.
And it’s good! That means you always have a reason to write and that you have the tools necessary to find and keep muse without any outside push necessary.
I’d say, firstly, work on getting muse back.
Get back in touch with your muse the next time you feel a particularly strong urge to write. Instead of spending time trying to find people in a silent fandom or forcing yourself to write something you don’t want to, just do some exercises that will help you get back into your muse.
I don’t know what media type your character comes from, but especially if it is something like movie or show that you can have on in the background of what you’re doing, do that. If it’s a comic or a book, think about your favorite scene and read it over first. If you’ve ever made some playlists for writing/your muse, you can always do that instead or as well. The point is to do something passively inspiring while you actively create. Now, that creating...
You want to do something that requires you to think about your muse so you can get in touch with them, not something that is going to make you feel overwhelmed and shut down. So, maybe don’t pick writing prompts for this - you can work up to that. Try out headcanon and character development memes and other question lists instead for right now. Things you can scroll down a list of, find questions that jump out as interesting (or even simply answerable to you at this point, you’re jump-starting a dead battery, it’s alright) and answer them. You can also do something as simple as write down what you like best about the character or their story, or put down the basics of filling in missing information that has always bugged you.
The beauty of this is that it is all on your own terms, your only objective here is to answer what you want, as much as you want. You can stop any time, but you can also answer a single question for three hours, making it eight pages long if the inspiration strikes you. It’s only about recharging your inspiration and establishing a connection with your character again. (This is also going to help you with getting back into writing, or approaching it for the first time, with a more internalized focus of interest.)
When you feel like you’ve done that, you can branch out on these exercises more. Answer the memes more in-depth, answer more of them/the ones you don’t have immediate answers for. You can also try writing out scenes from the character’s canon from their perspective, if it wasn’t already so, adding in their thoughts and feelings, or changing the scene in some ways that would be interesting to write out. This is the point where it’s a good idea to try a writing prompt or two, as well! Take the prompt as a sort of starter sentence from a mutual, you’ve got the situation, fill in with your muse.
Write when you feel like writing. The RPC is great at saying this when it comes to muns not wanting to write, but kind of ignores the other side of the equation. The side where you want to write, have the inspiration and muse to do so, but it might not be the best time. As in, you’re not home/wherever you usually write, with whatever device you tend to write on accessible. No, you’re not going to be able to get as much done, but you can write without the usual situation and device regardless. You can write a scene or ideas down using your phone or tablet, or go old school and use a notebook. If you’re at work and your job isn’t applicable to being able to get down a single sentence, that still doesn’t mean you have to wait 8+ hours to get home; while you’re taking your break, write a little bit. It is a break, and writing is your hobby, it isn’t work. It’s good to do things you enjoy on breaks, and far more fulfilling to have also accomplished something you happen to enjoy.
Not writing when you have the drive to do, putting it off and holding it in until “the perfect moment,” is a great way to lose your inspiration and never actually have that moment. If you feel like doing it, that means it is the perfect moment. Life is restricting, don’t impose even more restrictions on yourself by having to be at home, in a specific spot, with a specific device, at a specific time, on a specific day. Was that annoying repetition? You’re right, it was. And that’s how your creative mind processes all the crap piled onto it that doesn’t allow for creativity.
Now, the other problem, the fandom situation.
There isn’t anything you can do about that, to be absolutely honest. I’m not going to blow smoke and tell you to be positive, wait it out, maybe the fandom will spring to life again. You know, maybe it will...but you could be waiting literal decades for that to happen. Not cool. Please, take my word for that, it’s personal experience that it blows even more than you imagine it will.
What you can do is take the matter into your own hands in other ways; putting yourself out there with more availability in multiple ways.
Are you a single-fandom blog, or are you crossover friendly? If you’re not crossover friendly, try to think of a single, relatively popular fandom that you enjoy. Don’t look at it like a hassle, but rather, just another creative exercise. A serious pitfall of creating alternate universe versions of muses is to take the simplest route, merely picking something you want from that other universe and applying it to your muse with no relevant changes that would naturally occur from it. It isn’t just reductive as hell, it’s not remotely creative, it’s like sticking a sticker on your muse’s forehead and saying that’s a whole different muse. It’s neither attractive to potential partners nor going to sustain your own interest for long. You want this to be a passionate investment on your own end, for yourself.
What not to do:
Let’s say the fandom you picked to do crossovers with is based around magic, the main characters are witches, and they are divided into factions based on how their magical talents display and develop. Not only do you decide to make your muse a witch, you pick the most badass faction. It’s the one full of assassins and action and (metaphorically or literally) sex appeal. Well, that’s also going to be the most popular faction in the fandom. That means there will not only be plenty of big name canons there but also that there’s going to be a plethora of OCs designed just for this universe...and other crossovers from other currently active fandoms.
While that might sound like it’s great for maximizing interaction chances, it’s really not when you’re just starting somewhere new with a character from another fandom that might not be known or liked. It can also take a minute in another fandom’s RPC to identify where the good partners are. Every now and then, it is the most popular and over-populous era/faction/etc., but most of the time, it isn’t. People who write with considerable dedication and talent fairly rarely are in the popular kids club even in their fandom choices. By inserting yourself into that area, you might be bypassing (and being bypassed) by better partners on the assumption that their characters are simply going to bore you to death since they’re not within the scope of your focal point.
It’s not a situation of not being allowed to be picky, you not only have that right regardless of your situation, you also should be. This is not a “beggars can’t be choosers” situation, you’re not beholden to anyone on the basis of being new and bored. However, some of my best, and longest lasting, writing partners over all 23 years I’ve been RPing didn’t/don’t fit with all the exact surface details that automatically draw my interest. It is as true within my own fandom as it is in dealing with crossovers. Opposites (with enough similarities) really do attract and work out well together!
Don’t judge and write people off for anything that isn’t an issue of compatibility with your muse, your writing, or yourself. Decline someone because they do one line only and you are novella, they write topics that are upsetting to you, you can see no way your muse and theirs can interact without instant murder, or because you cannot stand writing with someone who is pulling 90% aesthetics and purple prose. Not because their muse is a witch who uses life-based magic, loves nature, is a healer, and into their health...while your muse in this AU is all about the death, only appreciates an urban environment and is grossed out by animals, kills as an occupation, lives on cheeseburgers and caffeine. You see what I’m saying? Don’t limit yourself unnecessarily!
What to do:
Did you consider if, in that hypothetical idea of a fandom, your muse based on their purely canon self would even fit into that faction? Or is it just something you wanted to see? If you didn’t consider this, or it was the latter, fix that. That’s bad.
If you’re not absolutely dead set on that and only that, think about what really does fit the muse better. Maybe, they would be better as a healer, someone who messes with the very fabric of reality, or someone who manipulates natural elements at will. Then again, they might not even be a witch. They could be more mundane in terms of power, but more accurate and interesting as a normal, human (or whatever). They could even be greatly opposed to the use of magic and witches. Use your muse’s original canon as a base to decide these things.
If you are absolutely dead set on it, though, you have a lot of work to do making the character into what amounts to a markedly different one while still retaining some recognizable aspects of themselves. Consider what events, in this new universe of fandom, might have happened to alter the character thus. Keep in mind that even small changes can have great consequences in a character’s development, and you might need to think about the myriad ways in which that can display, how it changes still more things for this character.
While that job becomes so much more intense when you haven’t planned out a path that matches your muse’s canon characterization at all, it is still an important part of constructing an AU, of any kind, in general. Ask yourself what experiences led to the character you know as you already know them (including your own headcanons, yes). Then, find similar possible experiences within your new fandom verse that can have the same effect. Again, though, it’s important to understand that you are never going to have an identical set of experiences, so you need to explore relevant changes still.
When you do this, you’re allowing your muse to more seamlessly fit into this other universe in a fleshed out, interesting way. Interesting both new partners and yourself.
Okay, next obnoxious question from me! Do you have multiple verses, or are you single-verse?
Whether you are already exploring new fandoms or not, by creating a variety of verses for others to interact with, you’re increasing your chances for interest and activity. When you have a verse from a different fandom you can then, additionally, advertise your presence in both that fandom’s tags when you do a promo or applicable open starter and on active RPer lists for that fandom.
Every popular fandom has such lists. You can get on them by messaging/sending an ask to the blog or by reblogging their post to be added, following the directions. I haven’t seen one yet that doesn’t allow for crossovers. You simply have to tag it as stated in the post, such as “your canon’s name here - original fandom name - crossover.” By tagging your open starter or promo as “-insert fandom here- rp” and “-fandom here- open starter” you allow people in that fandom to find you to interact. Either way is excellent for getting started in totally new places with a character others might be unfamiliar with.
Please remember that if you tag a promo as “promo,” it’ll not show up in searches off of your blog. You know, where it actually needs to be searched. Thanks, tumblr, for being janky! Being more specific as to the fandom and character will help others actually find you. Don’t shoot yourself in the foot by tagging it as “promo.”
Make your verses accessible on your blog itself, in the nature of those verses, and how you set up your page or post that lists them.
Don’t put any page behind an impossible or complicated aesthetic. You really shouldn’t anyway, but when you’re needing interactions, it’s actively hurting your chances. Many people don’t want to have to play a game with your theme, it’s a turn off. Try a pinned post that lists all of your links to important pages like rules, verses, and bio instead. It means that, even from the dash, that information can quickly be found while other muns are first interested, and also that anyone who might be using the app can access it more expediently. (I’m genuinely not a fan or big supporter of doing google docs for rules, verses, bios, etc., as it forces people off site, so I can’t personally say, in good conscious and honesty, that I’d recommend it, but you do you!) You want to keep things quickly accessible is the idea here; when people are interested, you want to catch them right then and there before they have a chance to forget and lose your blog.
As to the nature of the verses themselves, give people real options. Don’t have 20 verses that all read same way. Same themes, plot possibilities, and backstories, or incredibly similar names. Have a diverse list of verses that can act as foundations for a variety of different muns. As many fandoms as you can reasonably have a good portrayal of, and different types of fandoms; not all the same genre (all fantasy, all horror, all scifi). Verses where your muse has substantially different goals, occupations, and other life situations that will involve another muse; don’t make your muse A Warrior™ in every verse, you can keep plenty of those aspects without being that literal. People love “modern” verses set in our own universe and, usually, in our own era. That doesn’t mean you have to go stereotypical or otherwise bore yourself by doing the standard “high school/college verse,” for instance. You don’t even have to designate that sort of thing, let alone make it the focus; simply create the verse by considering what your character really would be like if they existed within your reality.
As a final note on verses as pertains to this point, when you’re doing crossover verses, it’s alright to do some verses where your muse from their own canon existence somehow ends up teleported or whatever to another fandom’s reality, or even our own. Just don’t make every verse like this, it puts the onus of a great deal of creativity and effort onto the other mun by default; your muse has cluelessly dropped into the universe, and while it is high drama time for you, the other mun has to babysit, educate, deal with fallout, etc.
On making the list of your verses accessible, you want to focus on ease of browsing and not being overwhelming. People tend to look through a verse page and not read every verse listed, rather, they look at the titles and breakdowns to see if it is of interest, then read it. Don’t try to make everyone read them all, it isn’t going to happen, and shouldn’t change your effort any as the right people are going to find the verses that interest them...if you make it clear and easy enough.
Have a basic format you stick to, firstly. I do it this way: small verse banner, title of verse (linked to its overall tag so that muns can look through the tag at headcanons, aesthetics, pictures of the FC, and threads), muse age/age range, small blurb, possible triggers found uniquely or just heavily within this verse. In that order, one following the other in a simple, but pleasing way. Below that, is a more in depth breakdown of the “verse canon.” Sometimes, that is giving a brief rehashing of canon itself and anywhere my muse differs, be it in this verse only or overall, ending with where my muse is in this verse. Not literally where. I mean their present occupation, emotional and general state in life. At the very end, I provide any other relevant links and/or an expansion on the triggers mentioned at the top of the verse description if they’re that serious/recurrent so that muns can decide this isn’t the verse for them. I happen to have a potentially triggering muse, triggering verses, and writing triggering topics, though. That’s not something everyone needs to do.
Secondly, group your verses in a sensible way. I do my short list of default verses first. (And, I do mean short, you don’t want this be any more than four or five, it is overwhelming right out of the gate.) For me, that is two default verses of canon at different points on the timeline, one default AU that is a bit of a reversal of canon, and one default “modern” verse. Then, I list the verses that are in line with the altered canon one, just different possibilities, changes, points in history. After that, the different “modern” verse options. Then, verses for other fandoms, the crossover verses. And so on. This way, a potential partner can find the type of verse that might appeal to them and have an easier time picking from those possibilities and getting ideas.
Lastly, don’t be so succinct that you give too little information and underwhelm, but also don’t be so excessive that it takes all of the mystery of interaction away and overwhelms someone. It can be a difficult balance to strike, and some verses require more information than others, just experiment a bit. Additionally, it’s fine to link to pertinent information for the other mun to view aside from this, but don’t just link people to a fandom wiki as your “description/bio.” That isn’t giving information on how you write this muse, approach this fandom, or what another mun can otherwise expect. Keeping your descriptions interesting is important, you’re not giving a boring lecture, you’re trying to inform someone while making them hyped for their choices. It’s more interesting, and informative, to read if you do them with an ear to the “tone” of your muse in that verse. Is it a sad one? Sound that way. These can, indeed, function as snippets of your writing, so be sure you are writing them with the same care you should be giving your replies; spellcheck, good word flow and use, mind the grammar, and read over what you’ve written for common, easy mistakes.
Again, by giving a genuine variety of verses to choose from, you’re allowing for a greater reach in potential partners. Everyone from those still in your original fandom to those in new ones, all the way to fandomless muses will be able to interact with you this way.
Finally, in regards to what you can change or do when you’re in a dead fandom and seeking interactions; make sure you are increasing your reach by using proper tags, being honest about what and how you write, and don’t wait for others to stumble across you.
When you use tags properly, you’re increasing your chances of being seen at all. Every time you post something at all applicable on your blog, tag it with relevant things. Tag as described above with whatever fandom it is and “RP,” your character’s name, “open RP,” character name and RP, indie RP, open starter, and so on. Be sure you are optimizing your tags by placing the most relevant to finding you in the first four, those are what show up in site-wide searches only. Anything after that isn’t going to appear in a search across all tumblr.
By tagging your character’s name, as a canon, you should know that you are likely to get personal blog interaction. I’m pretty against being nasty to personal blogs for no reason, as I don’t appreciate personal and fandom blogs being shitty to me for the sole reason that I am an RPer. Please, use clear, short, attention getting directions for them. If you want no interactions with them, put right in the description of your blog “RP blog, does not interact with personal blogs.” When you say things like, “personals dni,” or “personals blocked,” you’re not doing anyone any favors. Personal blogs often don’t even know what the hell a personal blog even is! They do not denote themselves this way, to a personal blog, they’re just a blog. By designating first that you are an RP blog, you’re making it clearer that they’re the personal; they’re obviously not an RP blog, so that must make them a personal. Follow this up in a pinned post, right on top. Give a note to personal blogs that describes them as “any blog that isn’t an RP blog” first, then either tell them in brief what they can and can’t do or that you don’t interact and will block.
I don’t recommend taking your blog off of being findable, however. That’s alright once you have the RP activity you are looking for, but until then, it’s working against you. Other RP blogs cannot easily find you either, they will only find you if you’re on a list or appear in their recommended blogs, if you interact with a mutual, or are recommended by a mutual. You’re not just lessening your chances of personal blogs finding you, so if you have that turned off, turn it back on.
Don’t entirely rely on others finding you regardless, though. You can’t be 100% passive when you have no interactions, and by relying solely on serendipity you’re far less likely to get them. I know that everyone here is terminally shy, but seriously, you have to do more than put your silent will into the universe that someone perfect find you. You have to make this happen. Once you get a few people, you can afford to be more passive. Not only do you have some people to write with, you will be more visible to their mutuals, and more established as a presence. I’m not saying this is easy, or that it will become easy, not awkward or stressful, if you have a legitimate issue behind the shyness. Just that it is the only way to really proceed, and I believe you can do it!
So, go looking for interesting blogs. Be crossover and OC friendly (again, this doesn’t mean “accept everyone,” there are valid reasons for not accepting people you won’t work out with that have nothing to do with their fandom or being an OC), and search those fandom’s RPCs, following any blogs you think you might work out with upon reading their rules and other pages. Search for fandomless OCs and do the same thing. Fandomless OCs aren’t just floating around in the ether, they just weren’t created expressly for a particular fandom and within its confines. What is excellent about that is their ability to have a wide variety of verses and many possibilities to fit into any fandom or verse. So, don’t count them out solely on the basis of being an OC and fandomless. It doesn’t mean what people seem to think it does!
Do not stop at having followed 50 blogs. I mean, other than that you probably should stop following people for a bit. That you should do, as you need to be building writing relationships here, not following so many people that you cannot get to them. Don’t just stop at the follow, though. Since you’ve read their rules and information like a good RP partner, you should have some idea of what their interests are and where they align with yours, as well as how they prefer to be approached, if they accept memes right away to start, need plotting, have a rules password. When they’ve followed you back, proceed with interaction!
Ask if they’d like to plot when they have time, you’re really looking forward to writing with them. But...have some idea of a plot, please. It is a serious turn off to have someone message you wanting to plot, only to reply and get “lol I don’t have any ideas, anything works for me/whatever you want to do.” That isn’t plotting, it’s one party coming up with ideas and constructing a plot while they’re being told “I’m fine with anything.” That may be true, but it’s disheartening and a red flag for many people. If you genuinely can’t come up with anything, pick verses that match up well and suggest doing something within them.
“When you have the time, would you be interested in discussing writing? I was looking at your verses, and I think your verse -name- and mine, -verse name-, would mesh well.” Is a good way to start. Once you have a discussion flowing about the verses meshing and the muses, it’s typically easy to organically develop some plot ideas to go off of.
If both you and the other mun are alright with plot-free interaction and memes, you can send a meme any time. If you can’t find any memes on their blog, look for a wishlist or navigation page that shows you the tags for memes/wishlist. Still can’t find it? Ask them if they’ve got a wishlist or meme tag you can look through.
Additionally, if open starters are a thing you both do and are alright with, find some of theirs and respond. Post your own, tag it appropriately to be found in general and on your blog, and reblog it once or twice. Don’t excessively reblog it, and don’t get upset on the dash if no one interacts with it or any memes you reblog. Both are demanding to outright guilting, and not a good way to get partners. Just provide them with the ability to easily interact by making the posts available in the first place and by making them findable on your blog search and navigation.
Provide something for potential partners to see. Since you said you already do have writing, that’s great! That’s content on your blog that your partners can view. However, since you’re also having the issues you’ve stated, it’s likely that you haven’t many new posts. Show that you are active, interested in being here, and how you write your muse (and in general) by posting some newer content. For original content, do a headcanon or some meta, or post about new verses you are adding, the changes on your blog, a promo. For reblogs, things pertaining to your muse like canon imagery, fanart, quotes from canon or that generally express your muse, and aesthetics relevant to your muse are all excellent things to queue.
Use that queue. Not only do very few people appreciate having dash spam of similar content for the comparatively short time you might be around, but also, running these things on a queue means you spread that out for maximum view. While there are hours of heavier activity, you’ll have mutuals who are on at unusual hours due to their life and preferences or their timezone. This way, you’re not appearing inactive, if not outright invisible, to those mutuals. It’s not a bad idea to use a queue tag so that people know if they interact with a post that’s been queued, you might be here to quickly respond.
Ultimately, to fix your fandom and lacking partners problem, you just need to up your availability and reach beyond that fandom alone. Be proactive in following and approaching, decline blogs based on not working out only, utilize tags and fandom RPer lists, have everything on your blog easy to follow and not overwhelming, and have your verses meet as wide of a range of people as possible while also not being overwhelming.
Try updating your promo, as well, by the way. They’re not dead, they just really tanked when people kept making them based solely on aesthetic principle instead of being at all informative about the muse. They do seem to be coming back, so it’s a thing to consider.
Yes, make it visually appealing, it will draw people to reading it. No, do not just use a song lyric or quote with words highlighted linking your rules, verses, bio. Tell people basic info like the age of your muse and yourself, if you are multiverse and multiship, your muse’s canon verse and a couple of big interest verses of other major fandoms or themes that tend to be of interest to people, and what kind of RP you write - one line/para/multipara/novella. Absolutely give links to rules, verses, bio, and either memes, wishlist, or open starters, but give them just like that; make it very clear what this link is to. Put a very short statement of interest on there denoting that you’re expanding to new fandoms and looking for writing partners.
Do not sound desperate, demanding, or devaluing of yourself. Don’t say shit like “because my fandom is dead,” “trying this before I give up and delete my blog,” or “I suck at interaction/writing/ooc interaction/being a person but welp giving it a try, so follow and hit that heart.” (Conversely, calling yourself derogatory things and implying that your partners are too, such as the “we’re all just losers here” shit.) All of the above are not attractive, and they’re not even surprising enough to stand out anymore. It’s another reason to scroll right by that promo because nothing at all was different or of interest.
And as a wrap-up/rehash of the first topic, getting muse back: try starting over at the beginning by approaching the media involving your muse that has really stuck with you emotionally over the years, and exploring and developing your muse again.
Don’t tell yourself you can only write, for example, at home, on the laptop, after 7pm, and with a pop toy staring at you. The best thing about writing, as opposed to so many other hobbies, is that you can do it anywhere! So, do that. Do it any time you both feel the inspiration to do so and aren’t going to get fired or expelled for it. This isn’t work, it’s something enjoyable that does take effort (like literally all creative activities and skills do), but approaching it as though you need to follow novel writing advice from someone who has never published anything of note and isn’t you on the internet, with strict rules for success makes it feel that way. So does being frustrated with a dead fandom, no interaction. It’s disheartening, feels as annoying and fruitless as work often does. You probably need to break out of that mindset, and you can only do it by beginning to allow yourself to be creative on your own terms, entirely for yourself.
Do write simple things at first that you are inspired to do (you can’t get a scene out of your head, or a bit of dialogue), and/or headcanon/character development memes and question lists. Build from there as you get back in touch with your muse, writing things primarily or entirely for yourself still. Expanding on headcanons, doing some meta, or maybe writing out a missing piece of canon or what you’d be interested in seeing happen in canon if some event was altered.
Doing this sort of thing, you are getting in touch with your muse again and back into the real spirit of writing creatively, simultaneously.
Whatever you find most inspiring, do it. If it’s watching the movie or show again, do that, have it on while you write or simply think on the character’s actions, thoughts, and emotions during those scenes. If it’s reading the material again, do that, and read snippets of personal importance before you write. Maybe it’s some past playlists you can have on while writing, or even while you’re cleaning, walking the dog, driving or riding somewhere. It could even be your own previous writing! Go ahead and re-read that, it sounds like you still appreciate it, and that’s truly promising. If you find that you’re horrified by some of the things you’ve written in the more distant past, hey...that’s not just valid as hell, it’s natural. You know what else it is? An inspiration. You can clearly see that you could do better, that means you now know how to do better and are ready to do so. Validate yourself, prove it to yourself by rewriting or fixing something.
Don’t delete the blog or archive it. It is unpleasant to have a dead blog around, but don’t keep it dead. Use the same blog and simply transition it into wider things that will net you more partners and the interactions you deserve.
Look, even if you weren’t the most popular blog in your fandom before it went quiet, you really appreciated the blog, muse, and writing you were doing. You’ve defined that it wasn’t something you did to cause this situation, you just had the shit luck we all run into eventually of being in a fandom that ran out of material or interest. People are really fickle, so by taking a wider approach and fixing on the writing and muse instead of fandom now, you’re stopping this from repeating. Seriously, on a long enough timeline, every fandom dies or goes into hibernation. If you make a whole new blog with a different muse, it is going to happen again eventually.
So, don’t feel like you’re ridiculously clinging to the past and need to move on, you’re just sticking to something and can continue to stick to it through the next five fandom deaths. Just because it is the most popular thing to do to drop muses, constantly add new ones, and have this attitude that you can “blog refresh” your way out of recurrent, and inherent, problem doesn’t mean it is actually the right thing to do. It’s not even the most sensible, and certainly not the best thing to do with anything you’ve spent time and effort on.
That’s your incentive; yourself, the time and care you’ve put in, and your continued interest in writing and the muse. You’ll find good people, and bluntly, everyone else can fuck right off when you’re incentivized by yourself. It becomes a self-fulfilling activity at that point, I swear, and it feels really nice.
Just get back in touch with your muse and writing itself so that you can begin to expand and start interacting again!

Getting into the ✨K-Arts ✨ Design Department...
...as an AMA+ Scholar!
Before proceeding, please check if your country is eligible for the AMA+ Scholarship of Korea National University of Arts (en.karts.ac.kr)!
Note: these are my experience in the application process and current life as K-Arts Masters of Design Student! YMMV :) Also, I won’t be putting information that’s already in the K-Arts website.
I actually have no idea how I got into  K-Arts. I'm also not sure how they graded our application, but we were able to see our grades. I don't remember mine exactly but it’s around 90%..? However, I think your grading process depends on each department!
(STILL WRITING IT! WILL ADD MORE TIPS AND LIFE IN K-ARTS TIDBITS ^^)
Tumblr media
Applying to the K-Arts Design Department as an AMA+ Scholar:
1. Korean Language:
At least TOPIK Level 3, and should be able to already converse or understand intermediate Korean (CAN’T STRESS THIS ENOUGH, your Korean ability will affect your quality of life as a K-Arts scholar).
2. Regarding past grades:
I actually think that other than school grades, the most important part of the application is your portfolio, study plan, and Korean skill level.
3. For self-introduction:
I really didn't do anything special about it but I did put:
- Why I wanted to study or why I studied graphic design,
- why I wanted to study design in Korea,
- Why do K-Arts need me as their scholar. I think this is important. Change your mindset, K-Arts NEED you because _________________. I think this can help you write your self-introduction better.
I suggest that you just be sincere with this personal introduction, and spice it up a bit. But don’t lie!
4. For the study plan:
Instead of writing vague plans like “I will study Korean language or I will find a job after graduation” or “I will look for an internship” or anything like that, I suggest that you make very specific plans.
For my study plan is I created a project proposal. Complete with research background, objectives, target users, 2-year project timeline, and my future plans about my project.
I also wrote about my plans in Korea after graduation, the specific companies I want to work in, and how my education in K-Arts will make me a designer that can help Korea and my country.
5. Portfolio:
You don't need to put a lot of your projects, you just need to pick the ones that you're really proud of and you think will make you stand out from the other portfolios. I also have other illustration and painting projects but I did not put it in my portfolio because I am applying for the visual communication program.
Some of my bits that I put in the portfolio (I’m not comfortable showing my projects for privacy reasons!)

Life in K-Arts
1. Intensive Korean Course (October - February)
Before entering K-Arts, you need to study Korean first for at Hankuk University of Foreign Studies, which is the university beside K-Arts. You will take a level test and do intensive Korean classes for about 2 months with other AMA+ scholars. That's 8 hours a day everyday.
And then after that you will take another level test, study again for two more months... but this time you will only study for 4 hours a day, and with the other foreign students who enrolled in HUFS, not necessarily just AMA+ scholars.
When you pass your language course, you can start your first semester in K-Arts.
Tumblr media
2. Dorm Life
You can choose to live in the dorm or you can choose to live outside. It depends on you but the dorm fees are of course cheaper, around 200-350$ a month, and currently there are 2-person rooms and single room dorms. I live in the single one and pay $350/month. If you live outside, you need to pay around $400~ above plus deposit (around $1000-$5000) and utilities (around $50). So the dorms is definitely cheaper.
Two Christmases have passed but I still can’t go home due to Corona :(
Tumblr media
3. Part-time jobs
You can get a part-time job 6 months after living in Korea. For those with TOPIK 0 to 3, you can only do 15 hours a week but if you have TOPIK 4 and above, you can do up to 30 hours a week, and work for as much as you want during the vacation.
I was able to get a part time job after 7 months in Korea, so that helped me a lot with my lifestyle because I really like to go to 맛집s (hot places to eat) in Korea.
꿀팁 Cool Tip: Eat at the K-Arts cafeteria! It’s only $3.50 for unlimited food! Meals in Seoul usually cost $7 on average. It helped me a lot when I was broke lol
Tumblr media
4. Design Classes
For your classes, EVERYTHING will be held in Korean. The professor won't slow down for you so if you don't understand anything, good luck :)
Some of my classworks:
Tumblr media
For my first semester, I had three classes: Communication Design, Design Studio & Design Critique.  I survived my first semester because I'm the only student at the time. The design department does not have a lot of students because they say it's hard to get in, so for the first semester I don't have any classmates. But starting the second semester of my first year, a classmate appeared so it’s a lot harder because I'm still not good at Korean during that time but thankfully my professors and classmates are very helpful. I survived!

Hello! Thank you for the readings, it's very generous of you. I was born at 1994.07.30. I might not be able to word it in a right way, but my question is whether i should stay where I am or should I work harder on becoming self employed. I know my end goal, but with the virus and everything becoming hectic I kind of lost a bit of my momentum so I'm a bit at a state where I have no good idea what to do. Thank you in advance for your answer!
This is reading 7 out of 8 (they may be out of order). At the moment of me writing this, there are no slots left, but you can still get a reading in exchange for a small donation.
Thank you so much for the kind words Kaichi (i hope thats your name????? lol) I think I can understand your question, but I don't want to answer it directly because I don't feel like it would be right of me to make that decision for you. Instead I asked the cards to reveal something to me about both of these options so that your decision comes easier.
Tumblr media
eight of wands, eight of cups. ace of wands. queen of wands reversed
This is what i got for your self employment situation. You definitely have something good coming to you in that regard, but you will have to work for it VERY, VERY HARD and it will take a long time before it really pays off the effort that you put in. If I were in this situation, i would start building towards it in some way I can, but I would definitely not put all of my eggs in this basket.
The cards also allude to it that the reason why you are looking in the direction of self employment because you want your job to fulfill some kind of need (not financial... perhaps emotional?) that you are not getting. Whether this is a good or bad thing seems unclear but i think there is an implication that your emotional need can also be fulfilled somewhere outside of your job if it must. It doesn't have to be a work thing.
king of coins. the world. page of cups
This part is about your current job, and while I cannot guarantee it of course, the cards say it surprisingly clearly that you are about to get some kind of extremely good news in that regard. I very well think that this is either a promotion, or some kind of new opportunity that will open up for you in your career, and in this situation the king of coins is your boss who sees your efforts and will treat you generously. I don't know if this is applicable in your situation or not but just know that all of these cards are extremely positive in a career context and I hope they come true. 💖
six of coins reversed. knight of swords reversed
I felt compelled to pull another row as something that you should be aware of on the wayside while making this decision. This is revealing to me that there is an opportunity that someone has offered to you a long time ago already, but you have been putting off the decision of accepting or declining because you distrust the source. Your suspicion seems very correct as the offer would certainly come with some kind of insidious string attached and the person offering it doesn't seem trustworthy.
I asked about who this is or what this situation is about, and i got
nine of swords reversed. knight of coins reversed, king of wands reversed. three of wands
It seems like you have a long history with this person, long enough that maybe they are a family member or old family friend. They seem extremely, outwardly aggressive, possibly bad with money, and likely with some rancid political views. The advice here is to stay clear and independent of them as much as possible, no matter what they offer, and you will be fine, as they don't seem to have any power over you anymore even if they did in the past. But if you feel like this part didn't resonate, don't worry because these cards are clearly referring to something in the past, and in the future there is nothing but healing in store for you. 💖
All in all I think the most important thing that you should know is that I don't think there is a bad decision in this situation, as long as you are willing to put down the necessary work for either, since they both have some up- and downsides of their own. Maybe you can figure out a way to integrate them both into your life and reap the benefits. Just make sure that you don't burn yourself out as that would be extremely damaging and it appeared as a potential concern in the reading.
tip💖

hey idk why I'm asking you.. probably because you're older than me and from what I've pieced together from the small snippet that is your online persona, kind and helpful.. but do you have any advice for someone trying to get their first job and has no idea where to start or what to do? (...who's also extremely anxious and trans so.. scared) you don't have to answer I'm just putting it out there but thank you if you do!
hi there!! i know job searching esp when you’re young and doing it for the first time is really nerve racking. here are some tips i can think of:
-try out a job search engine. indeed.com is really good if you’re in the us, but im sure there’s something equivalent in most countries. you  can search the city you’re looking to work in, the type of job, etc. and get results that way. linked in has a really nice search function as well, if you build yourself a profile on there!
-it’s nice to try and get involved with organizations whose mission/core values you respect or enjoy, even if it’s not like your dream job. i work in the arts in an administrative department, which isn’t glamorous, but i have worked my way up a bit and i really enjoy being in an arts-based environment while i figure out my next steps
-write personalized cover letters for any job you might apply for. you can start by checking out cover letter formats (you should be able to google and find tons of them easily), but be sure to include what about this specific company/position appeals to you and what about your background makes you a good fit. organizations really like seeing you put the time in to research the company and put in some details, rather than a generic cover letter!
-practice common interview questions and come up with responses. here’s a list of a lot of common questions that seems pretty accurate to me. think about how you might answer ahead of time, and rehearse the words out loud if that’s something that’s helpful for you!
-there’s definitely gonna be at least a few questions that  you didn’t prepare for, and the number one thing with these is TAKE YOUR TIME. if you need a few seconds to come up with a thoughtful answer, no hiring manager is going to mind! they’d rather you take a beat, think through the question and give a well thought out response than have you answer immediately with just  a half baked idea. employers typically appreciate thoughtfulness in interviews as it indicates you will be thoughtful on the job as well
-during interviews, LISTEN AS CLOSELY AS POSSIBLE when they ask you questions. i’ve sat in on interviews w my boss, and he does this thing where he asks people to rate themselves on a scale of 1-5 and he frequently has people who are so eager to answer they give answers on a scale of 1-10 instead, which often can give the impression that you aren’t attentive to detail, and honestly almost immediately disqualifies people
-in this same vein, if they ask for specific examples in the interview, make sure you’re giving them! for instance, if the employer asks “give us an example of a time when you handled x situation” be sure you are giving a specific, detailed example rather than simply describing abstrractly how you think you handle x types of situations in general!
-dress as professionally as possible and write as formally as possible! there’s no thing as overdressed, even if it seems to be a relaxed working environment, the employer will appreciate the effort you put in
-always send thank you follow up e-mails, within 24 hours after the interview, reinforcing how much you enjoyed meeting with them and that you remain interested in the position. no joke, i got hired at my current job after i was initially declined, because the candidate they initially chose dropped out and i had been diligent sending follow ups!
-have questions for the interviewer! when they ask if you have any questions about the position at the end of an interview, it leaves a good impression if you have a few. one of the best ones ive heard sitting in on interviews is asking us what our favorite things about our current jobs are!
-remember that it’s just as much an interview for them to see if THEY’RE a good match for YOU. they want you to be the best candidate so they can hire you! think of it as an interview for them as well
-when you get rejected (we’ve all been rejected! it happens), allow yourself to be disappointed, but try not to take it personally as much as possible. maybe give yourself a day to wallow in it, eat a bunch of ice cream or smth then wake up the next morning and try and remember it was a good experience and will only make you that much more confident for your next interview. who gets the job is often times just a coincidence and complete luck, depending on the time of year, specific qualities the interviewer has tendencies toward, and the applicant pool (they can be drastically different allll the time smh)
let me know if you have any other questions ill be sending employable vibes your way!!

why do you hate roald dahl? I don't know much about him as a person but I liked his books when I was a kid and I'd love to hear your opinions/information
He definitely had major issues as a person (which are google-able with searches like “roald dahl racism” or “roald dahl misogyny”), but I don’t need to delve into those–I don’t think there’s any reason they should overshadow people’s love of his work (especially when he is, obviously, no longer getting any money or prestige from it). My issues with his writing itself are completely personal, and include no judgment at all toward the tons of people who love it!  …That said, I rarely pass up an opportunity to go on massive rants about children’s lit, and this particular issue is one I’ve been trying to articulate for ages (and am not even sure I’ve succeeded yet), so…here goes nothing. ^_^
There’s a certain style of writing that I’ve mostly encountered in British children’s books, though I’m sure one could find plenty of examples from other countries. The word I always gravitate toward is “twee,” which Google defines as “excessively or affectedly quaint, pretty, or sentimental.” Now, I know a million voices would immediately rise in protest here, because British children’s lit, and Roald Dahl in particular, is often seen as the polar opposite of quaint, pretty, and sentimental. It’s dark! It’s edgy! It’s heavy with satire and nightmarish imagery, and it doesn’t spare its child characters all sorts of grisly fates.
And all of those things are true, but…I’ve always felt like the writing itself dulls the effects of the subject matter. To me, it comes off as so very preoccupied with its own cleverness and whimsy that it seems to distance itself from the actual content of the story, from the characters and emotions involved, and it always prevents me from caring about them very much.
Continuing my journey of Google Dictionary definitions, maybe a better word than “twee” would be “affected”: “artificial, pretentious, and designed to impress.” I generally don’t get a sense of the author’s passion for the story, or of complex characters who feel deeply, or nuanced relationships, or believable and striking dialogue–all of which are things I tend to crave in books and media. Instead, these books tend to feel like…well, almost like junior Monty Python, which is a bit of an “aha!” moment, because I also can’t stand Monty Python. (…And now the entire Internet will be coming after me.) It’s like…broadly drawn comedy with flat characters and silly, over-the-top hijinks, all of which is just a vehicle for showcasing how droll and witty and self-consciously childish the author’s voice is. (…And just to provide another example of this, I’m going to put the final nail in my own coffin and say that I found a lot of these same issues in the very first chapter of the very first Harry Potter book. Like most of my generation, I grew up with and absolutely love the entire series, but even as a little kid, I was almost turned off by the writing about the Dursleys in that chapter. Luckily, I feel like the story began to take itself a lot more seriously as soon as Harry and magic entered the picture.) (Note: This is just a brief, well-known example, not an attempt to engage with the hellhole of J.K. Rowling discourse; don’t @ me. 😛)
Again, there are many, many people who have read and loved these books and absolutely do not feel this way! And I’m sure many factors go into that, from cultural differences to personal preferences about genre and tone and what they want children’s lit to accomplish in the first place. Which just makes me want to write a whole other giant essay about each of those topics,* and to find specific examples from Roald Dahl and other British kid lit to illustrate my points, but I should probably return to the the joys and delights of job applications. 😬 But I will happily come back to this later, and thanks so much for asking, and feel free to let me know if it made no sense! I think the bottom line is that lots of people get very good things out of Roald Dahl that I just can’t seem to get because of tone and style issues (though even I still have a soft spot for Matilda).
*Disclaimer: I have a master’s degree in children’s lit. I mention this not because it makes my opinions any more valid than anyone else’s (boy howdy, does it not), but because it makes it clear that this is very much my jam, and I have very little restraint when anyone gives me an excuse to ramble about it!

Omg you wrote so much for the college advice, thank you so much!! I don't mean to bug you or anything but do you have any advice for resumes and cover letters for internships and stuff?
well, i wanted it to be more genuine than the typical: go to class, eat/sleep regularly. it’s stuff that’s super easy to say but college is like a full time job. we’re not always gonna do it.
for resumes. i have 2 kinds. an academic resume and another one for retail jobs. they essentially look the same but their emphasis on skills vs academics is different. an academic resume is probably gonna be more useful for you if you want an internship or anything like that.
writing a resume is something that your university might offer help in making if you have one and you want them to edit it.
do:
* make your resume neat
* customize your resume’s top statement (skills/profile/objective) to the job you wish to obtain. this would also go for cover letters.
* make sure your contact information is professional!!
use a “professional” email. i would use the one your school gives you.
and if you leave your phone number, make sure you check what your voice mail message is in the case where you don’t pick up.
i would suggest saving the number of the office where they’re likely to call from so you know to answer it. i, personally, don’t like answering calls from unknown numbers so that came in handy for me
* put your education first on a resume after your name and contact information and your beginning statement
i wouldn’t recommend including your high school education on your resume unless you were an officer of a club(s)/you graduated with multiple honors/you were part of a magnet program
don’t put your (college) GPA if it isn’t over a 3.5
* bullet points, not full sentences. if you have a lot to say, customize the formatting to two columns of text
* order your experience from most to least recent (2018 things first to 2011 … whatever.)
order goes by when you started (just in case you have things that overlap)
* if your resume is short and you have no job experience, include your volunteer experience and club experience. specify your role - especially if you were an officer in the club.
you can also include relevant coursework and any honors/awards you’ve received since entering college
beware of certain honors or invitations to “honor societies” that you may have received (read here). awards from your university with their official seal are safe.
even if you decide to not join a club on campus (such as honors clubs where the only way you can join is by invitation) include it but phrase it carefully
my resume for example has Accepted into Psi XXX XXX Honor Society and the National Honor Society of Leadership and Success
i’m not a member of the club but i was invited to join based on my GPA
on an academic resume you might want to add relevant coursework but if you’re trying to get any job, adding relevant coursework may not be necessary. instead, follow up your education section with your work experience.
your relevant coursework might change depending on the internship.
* use action words and try to keep the writing consistent to one tense/format.
* definitely include that you know a second language on your resume (if you are bilingual). specify the degree to which you are fluent as well.
* especially if you’re in the English or sciences fields, always include somewhere on a resume your publications. being published in undergrad makes you competitive.
* single spacing, even if you don’t have a lot. there’s actually a lot of little things you can add on a resume to make it a full page.
all in all, what you do on a resume sometimes depends on the position you’re looking for. you may end up with multiple copies of very similar resumes.
don’t:
* try not to make it too colorful. use bold functions rather than color for headings. a non academic resume can afford to look pretty but if you’re looking to work with your professor/university, “bland” isn’t necessarily bad
* don’t rely on templates. you can use them, but edit it so it looks like your unique resume. otherwise, it’s something that offices have seen so many times before
* your resume should only be one font. calibri and times new roman are always the safest to go with
the main text of your resume should be about 11-12 size font
make titles and headings bigger to stand out
* don’t make your resume more than a page. only CV’s (curriculum vitae) are longer than a page. it’s highly unlikely that you’ll need a CV until grad school.
(a CV is all of your experience in one document. if you want an example, you could probably find your professor’s CV on your school’s website if they have a faculty directory page)
* your references don’t belong on a resume. you either have to make your resume 2 pages (if the job asks for it) or somewhere on the application they may ask for it there
if you know the person you’re referencing personally, put their business/office number. not their personal number.
try not to reference people who are related to you/obviously have the same last name as you.
* always make sure you submit a resume/cover letter in PDF format. do name the document something professional since they’ll see the document name

Hey hey, it's gay bike anon again! I'm more than honoured to get my own tag!!! I definitely would like to keep talking to you <3 And only love for you too <3
I'll gladly wait for your response to my ask (or asks??? we'll see one day ehehehe)! I feel you, when people cite some of my text messages from a few months (or more) ago I'm often like "nope, nah-ah, that's not me, you're wrong". Same for older essays, I often can't believe I wrote those. And even with things I wrote late at night a few weeks ago, sometimes I'm like "I wrote that? That monstrosity??? Okay, I need more sleep before writing". (My capacity of writing in correct English grammar usually goes to sleep before I do, same goes for varied word choice). But sometimes I'll see this project I've worked on YEARS ago and exactly recognize the pieces I wrote? Since the ask would be fairly recent, I suppose I would recognise my writing style and word choice and since I didn't wrote it whilst sleep deprived (I hope??) I'm setting my chances of recognising it pretty high. But we'll see one day, the mystery will marinate for a while... [I am rereading this in the daytime, and this is EXACTLY what I meant, at night I make the weirdest word choices?? I’m definitely not changing it though because I might find it kinda funny]
I snorted so hard about the way you talked about your almost-name, I'm giggling here like crazy. Apparently my name means something alike 'dedicated to God', but my parents aren't really believers, so gotta love that. The meaning of my sibling's name is 'summer', but I'm the one born in the summer, whilst my sibling is born in autumn, oops. Guess my parents never checked one of those sites/ books where you can find the meaning of a name hahaha.
I love how my ask was so weird and chaotic that you sent a screenshot to a friend. I LOVE that she had no idea what was going on. Then again, I watched the semis (obviously hahaha) but I had no idea what was going on either... But honestly it was peak Dutch culture, water and bicycles, I would just add an ode to 'hagelslag' and voila, the entirety of Dutch culture summed up... [Also: if you don't know: 'hagelslag' is just sprinkles which we eat on bread, yes, on bread, we do not not only eat sprinkles as on cake or on donuts, like in any other country, no, we put it on bread. It's actually a really popular sandwich topping here. My ultimate favourites are the chocolate ones, but you also have them in several fruity flavours (like forest fruit) and anise flavour.] Thank you, perfect chaotic energy is an ultimate goal I strive towards *bows like I'm Victorian royalty or something*
You're absolutely right, it went EXACTLY like that. Specifically, I would be studying for my exams, explaining topics to myself like I always do, so I'd tell myself "The six possible origins of economies of scope are indivisibility, specialisation, marketing, research and development, GUESS WHAT.. SUBWAY DRIVER GANDÍA... ehhh... what was I doing again??" OR: "one of the most detailed and most used models of responsive regulation is Brathwaite's piramid. His enforcement piramid visually shows, nope not important, SUBWAY DRIVER GANDÍAAAAAA" And I'd laugh, continue explaining theories and calculations to myself until my focus started lessening again and my thoughts would wander off again. I am VERY glad I'm not the only one who thinks about it from time to time, and I'm glad you're not suing me for any mental harm yet.
Yess, those pictures I saw from Promising Young Woman look so beautiful and aesthetic!! I'll probably watch it somewhere after the 16th, because I'll most likely have finished my last exams by then. I'll tell you what I thought about it! Thank you SO SO SO much for all the luck wishes!!!! I had an exam last Friday and I absolutely rewarded myself, because it went better than I expected and I passed an earlier exam and a paper too! I didn't buy myself a tricorne (yet), but I did buy funko pops (my inner economist said it was 100% rational because it was a really good deal hahaha). I still have two exams to go, so I could always buy a tricorne for finishing either of those, OR. EVEN BETTER. I'll ask my parents (or my grandparents) for one for my birthday. I mean, that would be hilarious. They'd be so confused. They've never seen S3 and S4 of LCDP so they'll have no idea, even if I tried to explain it. It would be so incredibly funny (and really really weird for them), I am laughing like crazy just at the thought of it.
I've never been in Finland before, but those temperatures do not sound legal indeed. I have no knowledge of Finnish law, but maybe article 3 of the European Convention on Human Rights, the prohibition of torture, would work? If I was the judge I’d 100% agree, so we should all sue the weather sksksks. I'm glad to have brought you rain though (and that I apparently possess the power to do so - magic weather controlling pirate seems like a nice enough job to me)!!! I hope the temperature has become at least somewhat lower. You're right, climate change should just... stop... right away. The weather is pretty weird here, right now: one day it will be super sunny and (at least) around 27 degrees and almost melting away, and the other day it will be raining and I'll be wearing my warmest sweater. Like, why the extremes??
I love that I am able to make you lose your coherent thoughts (that's probably why we have one brain energy about Underwater, because I, too, have the ability to make myself lose my coherent thoughts). I'm glad for your faith in my impersonation of Martín. I even started Duolingo Spanish again, and now know the phrase, "Yo bebo leche" (I drink milk) which obviously would be very important to him. Now I'll just need an Argentinian accent to go with it. Leaning menacingly on a cane would be GREAT, I love the idea. I'll open job applications for a Denver. Maybe my cat could help me, she, much like Denver, is super loud and she is super aggressive towards other cats, so there is potential there. And guiding dogs and even tiny guiding horses exist, why not a guiding cat?
I always assumed I would follow a more... you know… legal... career path, maybe even literally a career in law. But, my accounting professor also showed us how to manipulate financial statements ("so you can notice when people are doing this", uh-huh sure, sure that’s why) and another professor of mine also said that a criminal career sometimes could be the more rational, rewarding choice over a legally acceptable career. So, I suppose I should not be surprised by this sudden change of career plans. I should have seen this coming. And what better way to be able to avoid the laws than by knowing exactly what they are and how far you can go. And if that plan doesn’t work out, the books of law I have (they’re combined in two huge hardcover bundles) are really heavy and you could probably harm someone with them if you hit hard enough… Well, I suppose you can even leave “hard” away, just by hitting someone softly with those books you can bring serious harm to them… Ah, and like that one professor would say: in this scenario it would be a rational choice to become a pirate instead of a privateer. Oh dear, not Arturito :/ Mutiny would seem like a good option, I’ll take over the ship and become Palermo the Pirate. Sounds much and much better than “Arturo the Pirate”, since that isn’t an alliteration, sooo mutiny is reasonable even for that reason. And then there’s the fact that it’s Arturo, I mean, that says enough.
YOU LOVE UNDERWATER TOO????!!!! I completely forgot that you posted that! It seems we do indeed already have one shared braincell energy my friend <3
Last week has been pretty good (except for having to make a test at 9:30, what a godless time, I’m usually barely awake by then ehehehe), I think I aced the test I had, got back some good grades and finally got my first Covid vaccination (and only shortly slight dizziness as a side effect, so that's pretty great). And thanks so much!!! For now I’m safe from Gandía, but somewhere in mid-July I’ll have to take an exam on campus, so I’ll might be able to bring out my inner Palermo then.
How was your week? If the weather is still unkind to you (well, also if the weather *is* kind to you), treat yourself to your favourite ice cream and a break every now and then <3 Do you already have holidays or hasn’t your academical year ended yet?
You’re also right - this is conversation and we’re friends now <3 And I absolutely do like cookies! I would say my favourites are american cookies (though stroopwafels are reaally good as well) but honestly there are only a few kinds of cookies that I don’t love that much. And anything with chocolate in it is GREAT. I do also love apples and bananas, though grapes (which I just had) are even better! What’s your favourite kind of cookie?
Also, I know I have been giving you so many prompts already, but I saw this one in that list you reblogged and it gave me so much Berlermo energy: you live in an apartment with your best friend. the two of you always fall asleep in each other's arms, but one day, your friend isn't there. they've fallen in love with someone else. it's your other best friend, who recently moved in with you. and that's when you realize, that those nights you spent together, weren't so platonic after all. I would love it if you’d write it, but if you decide not to that’s absolutely fine too, no worries <3
By the way, I was going to post this quite a bit earlier, but my laptop (unlike me) decided yesterday night, when I was finishing writing this, that it was time to sleep, so I had to quickly dump this whole rant in Google Docs (it’s almost two and a half pages what the heck) and I was busy all day so I only was able to upload it just now. I swear I can ractually espond faster than after a week :) Have a lovely evening, much love from the gay bike country <3
Heeeeeeey you are back!!! How happy am I to see my favouritest gay bike anon return to my inbox!!! 💕 [Author's note: You can tell I started this reply right away because you've sent me three or four asks since this one and one can tell you are indeed back hahaha]
Yeeeeeees this is how one makes friends!! You know, I was just thinking the other night of how "gay bike anon" shortens to GBA, like the Game Boy Advance, you know. Make of that what you will, but it pleases me to know that you can also have a cute nickname for your cute nickname. Nicknameception.
Yes, exactly that, "I did not write that, and if I did in fact write that.. No I did not." Also, "the mystery will marinate"??? That's an amazing word choice and some day I will absolutely use it for something, just you wait. I think it just goes to show that you should write everything while tired, haha.
Haha I love that naming convention for you. It may make very little sense, but....... but. Also, happy birthday for whenever it is, presumably in the nearby past or future!! Lots of love!! You're the summer child while your sibling is... a summer child, but like, different.
Since you appreciated my almost-name story, I'll reward you with the rest of it: so my name is Tuuli, which is Finnish for "wind". My mum originally wanted to name me Pilvi, which means "cloud". And then she was like oh no this child is not at all serene and cloud-like??? and thus, a new me. I'm glad she had second thoughts, although I wonder if having such an ill-fittingly chill name would've done anything to alter my personality? Nomen est omen and all. There's some kind of an alternate universe where all of that played out, but I'm glad it's not this one.
Yeah either you watched the semis and have no idea, or you didn't watch them and have no idea. There is no way to get what was going on there, I'm certain they themselves also didn't get it. I had no idea about hagelslag but thjipgnhefjpihjo that's amazing, I love that for you!!!! There was absolutely no reason to go there but you as a country just... did that. Amazing. Please have some and report to me so I can live through you. And also, you are absolutely legit Victorian royalty [or something] *bows in return*. Also, I do love how you say "I watched the semis (obviously)." Imagine if you didn't and this entire time I was tragically misinterpreting the nature and intentions of your ask and you were just rolling with it because you've no idea what I'm on about but are also too polite to tell me that. Khhhhhhh
Your brain has priorities!!!! And they're honestly beautiful. Well done, brain. Subway driver Gandíaaaaaaaaaa~~~ My brain is filled with Berlermo quotes that come @ me at random times during the day and leave me just a tad shell-shocked, remembering how it all went down. I'm eating my morning yoghurt and my brain goes yo te propuse fundir oro juntos, and I'm just there like :)))))) Real nice, brain.
Have you had the opportunity to see Promising Young Woman yet? Hhhhh it's so pretty, every time I work on this reply [it's a lot of times, okay, I'm very diligent about this, I stare at this ask and craft snazzy replies in my head all the time, that's why I'm so slow in... actually replying] I'm reminded of that. I'm not a very visual person but the colours and the framing... that was really nice.
I am somewhat glad you've not been to Finland yet, you must hit me up when you come visit, I'll take you for coffee!!! It's actually cooler now (bless!!!!!!!!!!!), the last... four days have been reasonable 14-20 degrees, after four consequtive weeks of 25+. Kkhhhh thinking back to it makes me feel a little ill, but now beret weather is back. I own a lot of berets, dear gay bike anon. I'm going to my university city for the weekend and I'm already wondering which beret(s) I should bring with me. This is an important decision with potential long-lasting consequences. I don't know if you've played any of Telltale's games (The Wolf Among Us and the first two seasons of The Walking Dead are the best ones, fight me), but when you make a decision and the game goes "This character will remember that." and you instantly go oh no what have I done??? That's how I feel about choosing the perfect beret for my city outing. But yes, weather extremes are just the worst. We've been having the longest drought I've ever seen here (it's still not properly rained, for the record, on Tuesday it rained for an hour or so) while in other places there's awful flooding. That's awful.
Ahhh I'm so happy you're continuing your Spanish-learning!! I took a beginner's course at uni in the spring semester, I'm going to take the next one when uni resumes in September. And yes, I'm studying it for LCDP. I mean I love languages in general, but I never had a particular need to study Spanish, until this year I suddenly did. I'm also Duolingo-ing it! Very slowly and steadily. Also, I adore the idea of your cat being your Denver. What's your cat's name??? What do they look like?? Tell me everything, you can't just leave it at my cat, you simply must allow me to meet them. Also, you know why guide cats aren't a thing? Because cats are the worst. I love cats, but you can't just teach them to do useful things. They'll do them if they want to. As I type this, my cat is trying to catch flies at my feet. Her name is Muusa.
I studied accounting for my undergrad!! So I can join you in [[[preventing]]] tax fraud and [[[recognising]]] tampering with financial statements. We can make a totally legitimate business out of it. No but truly, I'm certain we were taught some of those things with the expectation that our future employers would expect it of us. Capitalism is so fun :)))))) And you shouldn't be surprised, academia is but a stepping stone to crime, honestly. Any dark academia book will tell you this. You start out learning Latin and wearing turtlenecks, you end up with murder. That's just how academia works. And you seem to have already chosen your weapon... you're well on your way. :) Palermo the Pirate sounds great!!! I support your mutiny. I don't think I said, but this is my favourite word of the English language. Mutiny. Mutiny????? It doesn't sound very serious. It sounds cute, actually. I love it.
I'm so happy to hear you got your covid vaccine!!!! I had mine a month ago or so - I typed you a reply to the subway Gandía thing on the train ride back, actually. I was really stressed about getting it on my right arm, because I'm left-handed, and last time I got a vaccination (like a decade ago) they insisted on giving it on my left arm and I was sad :( But this time!! I got it on my chosen arm and was very pleased. So anyway, that was a segue. I'm glad you got your covid shot and were side effect -free!!!
My week has been good, thank you!! I went to my uni city for my niece's birthday on Monday, and as said I'm going back on Friday (tomorrow). So this time in between has felt like exactly that, time in between. I started reading Call Me By Your Name. I had my Korean class last night. Now I'm hanging out with my cat (she has stopped chasing flies and climbed to my lap) and talking to you. My holidays started already in May! And uni resumes in the beginning of September, but I'm a tutor for new students so I need to show up three weeks earlier for the orientation weeks. Yes, we do three weeks of orientation (read: three weeks of drinking). It's a bit insane.
Now I need to ask you again how your week has been, since I'm so slow. How has your week been?? Are you free from your exams?? When does your uni resume?
Stroopwafels are so good ahhh I'll have to buy them when and or if I see them. Possibly when I'm in central Europe but haha I can hope to be lucky and see them at a store with imported stuff, you know. My favourite cookies??? Omg maybe these ones - they have this truffle filling, and they're fun to eat (this is important in cookies, you see):
Tumblr media
And of course they're Fazer. Because Finnish people have only one setting, apparently. Or maybe that's just me. But all cookies are great, honestly. I like making American cookies, that's always a fun pastime (and you get to have cookie dough, that's like half the fun). I've actually not made them for a lifetime??? Maybe I should, soon. I'll keep you updated. Also, brookies. I love making brookies, they're great.
I really really appreciate being given prompts, I hope you know that!! Thank you!! Consider me pocketing this prompt and maybe eventually some day theoretically getting back to you about it!! You're right - it has Berlermo energy. Insofar as either of them actually have other friends. :)
Thank you for this kind message, dear gay bike anon <3 I'd apologise for my slowness in replying but I think I'd rather you just assume that I'll get back to you, and thank you for your patience <3 Your kind and funny and chaotic asks always brighten my day. I hope you'll have a great rest of the week and just... all the nice and fun and good things and great vibes in life. All the best, dear gay bike anon <3 Take care!! And greetings from Muusa as well - she just yawned and I presume that means "greetings".

This is really weird, but I was wondering if you had any tips for writing the common app essay? I'm applying next fall and since you're a writer I thought idk AGH you don't have to answer this if you don't want
hooOOoOOOO bOI, okay, you came to the right but also wrong place?? So I worked as an English tutor for a year, and I mostly did grade 7-12 literature stuff, plus some grammar, but they also liked to throw all the essay kids at me, too, cause I was the one who liked writing. So like... yeah, I have experience helping people with essays and shit, but heres the thing okay...
It’s actually really hard to give advice through a medium like this. At least in this kind of context. I could give you a bunch of creative writing advice, but essays, I feel, are a different matter. There is next to nothing that I could tell about “How To Write an Essay” that you probably haven’t heard a million times already or could find somewhere else. I would need to actually read the essay and give reactive advice or to sit down with you and talk through the process of writing it/outlining it together. A lot of the nuances of essay writing are in word choice, grammar, transitions, ect, ect, ect.
But I can TRY to give you a little advice? This is probably the number one thing that I rarely see in those “How To Write an Application Essay” thing things: AVOID NEGATIVE LANGUAGE. Seems simple enough, right? WRONG. Like seriously. These essays are all about hyping yourself up, talking about yourself, making you look 100x better than you actually are. You want to word and phrase things in such a way that makes your life and your abilities so much more. It’s literally a style about exaggerating while sounding modest. And it’s fucking hard to master. I personally hate this style because it feels like you’re lying through your teeth. But boy if I can’t take your shit and mix up a few words and spit out gold. ((I’m much better at editing for others than writing for myself in this field lmao))
Back to the “AVOID NEGATIVE LANGUAGE” thing. You may THINK you’re avoiding putting yourself down, but I challenge you to go back and REALLY look at it. Like with a super critical eye. A sentence may look innocent, like: “I may not have much experience in X, but I’m confident in my ability to learn quickly and efficiently.” Sounds good, right? You’re being honest while hyping up your ability to learn. Well, WRONG. To the reader, you’re basically saying “I’m under qualified, but hell, I’ll give it a shot”. Don’t do that. Instead, say something like: “I’m confident in my ability to learn quickly and efficiently, and adapt to situations” or some other bullshit. Don’t admit to those faults, even if they’re followed up by a self compliment. Just skip to the compliment. and USE the compliment to IMPLY that IF you just HAPPEN to not know something you’re supposed to know, you could easily learn. Negative language is tricky sometimes, and sneaks in without us realizing it. But trust me, it’s there, and the reader definitely sees it.
That example is kinda... more for job applications, I think? But it’s deff a concept that should be applied to all applications and cover letters and stuff. For college essays, the only real advice I can think to give without actually seeing your stuff, is they’re sluts for anecdotes and quick little life stories that make you seem like a real person, especially if it’s followed up with a “this is what I learned and how I grew as a person” kinda thing. Eh. It’s mostly about crafting language to trick people into believing something, even if you don’t believe it yourself.
Idk if that was helpful, but good luck!
