the house on lemon tree lane. part one.
“why is it that whenever we let percy pick the day out, we wind up going to either a library, a haunted house, or a haunted library?” a girl, with blonde hair and green eyes and too much orange eyeshadow on if you listened to other people, asks her companions. this time, his pick had been a haunted house.
percy, floating several inches off the dusty path thanks to the fact he's dead and usually a source of hauntings himself, sniffs. “i happen to like haunted buildings and libraries, nat. history, entertainment and education, what more could you ask for?”
“some variety,” nat, or natasa, retorts.
“is the haunted house we live in not enough for you?” carina, who had previously been looking around the outside of the house on lemon tree lane, joins in. “do you really need to visit other haunted houses to, what, compare notes?”
“can’t you ever decide on something else, like a gallery or a mall? something less typical?”
percy glares at the final speaker. “when it’s your turn to pick the day out, aisling, we can go to a gallery or a mall or a bloody opera if it takes your fancy, but it is my turn and i want to explore a haunted house.”
a loud, piercing whistle cuts through the air. the four of them turn to look at the final member of their group, branwen, who stands on the steps leading up to the house, her hands on her hips and a severely unimpressed look on her face.
“are you going to stand around arguing about what we’re doing until the day ends or are we actually going to go inside?”
the thing about o’sullivans, both by blood and by adoption, is that they are notoriously difficult to frighten, scare, terrify or otherwise through conventional means. a haunted house, to them, is much the same as visiting an amusement park, regardless of the stories told, the reputation of the house, and whether or not it’s actually haunted by anything remotely spooky.

so i'm taking part in @writeblrsummerfest again! and for the first time in... a while... i'll be using a different wip to tsenpha! i'll still probably use tsenpha, and some other random ocs, but for the most part i'll be using the daily life of a witch PI (which is a. no longer applicable title but i do not want to change it because i am lazy like that. anyway)

Hundreds Help Restore Defaced Tschabalala Self Sculpture in the UK Vandals spray-painted the artist’s sculpture of a Black woman in white.
https://hyperallergic.com/823737/hundreds-help-restore-defaced-tschabalala-self-sculpture-in-the-uk/
Last Monday, May 15, in a South English coastal town, vandals defaced Tschabalala Self’s “Seated” (2022), a 10-foot public installation depicting a Black woman facing the sea. In what has been characterized as an act of racism, perpetrators covered the New York artist’s bronze sculpture with spray paint, violently coating the Black woman’s skin with white.
“Painting the skin of my sculpture white is an obscene act and I feel horribly for individuals in Bexhill-on-Sea for whom this event may have shocked or frightened,” Self said in a statement.
The sculpture is currently located on the lawn outside the De La Warr Pavilion (DLWP), an arts center in Bexhill-on-Sea. The artwork is part of a temporary public art installation by the arts center with support from the Pilar Corrias Gallery in London.
With Self’s support, the arts center organized a community event on Sunday, May 21 to restore the sculpture. What followed was “an act of restoration and resistance” as over two hundred local members armed with paint solvent and scrubbing materials came together over the weekend to begin cleaning the sculpture, according to a press release from the pavilion.
Self’s artwork often includes depictions of the bodies of Black women and femme individuals, rendered in various mediums. In “Seated,” Self explores what she describes as “a universal act of leisure and calm.” Commissioned by the digital art collection platform Avant Arte, the sculpture first appeared in a mall near King’s Cross in London last year.
“I wanted to create a monumental sculpture for the public that spoke to this simple joy,” Self said in a text about the work. “The woman is strong, beautiful, and self-possessed. She represents all individuals, but women in particular, who understand the power and importance of simple gestures that assert their right to take up space.”
The sculpture was later unveiled in the seaside town, on the lawn outside the DLWP, on April 19.
Sussex Police did not respond to Hyperallergic‘s request for information regarding the investigation. In October 2022, the UK Home Office, responsible for policing in England and Wales, released a report that indicated a 26% rise in recorded hate crimes.
The community restoration event began at 11am and ran until 1pm. “We hope that the peaceful community clean-up event of last Sunday — and its far-reaching impact and support — will show the perpetrators that the majority of our community will not tolerate any future acts of this kind,” a DLWP spokesperson told Hyperallergic.
“Although certain measures were already in place, we have now improved the intensity and reach of our security measures, including refreshed signage next to the sculpture to deter further acts of vandalism, which is an ongoing problem on our seafront,” the spokesperson added.
“Seated” is set to re-open to the public on June 3. For the event, the arts center is celebrating with a community picnic in commemoration of “the power of art to galvanise and connect people and communities.” The sculpture will be on view until October 29.
“Despite my disappointment, I am not surprised as Black and Female — and especially because Black Female bodies are often targets for abuse,” Self said in her statement about the recent vandalism. “‘Seated’ proudly represents the beauty of both blackness and femininity, and for these very reasons she has been harmed: covered by her assailant with white spray paint in a futile attempt to erase her colour and, in my mind, her strength.”

Tschabalala Self Seated At Bexhill-on-Sea, UK
This spring, Tschabalala Self’s first public sculpture, Seated, travels to the De La Warr Pavilion (DLWP) from April 19 to October 29, in Bexhill-on-Sea, UK. Standing three metres-high and made from patinated bronze, Self’s monumental work uses the everyday object of a seat as an entry point for questions of permission and performance within public space. Its subject – poised, immaculately…

Hi! I'm visiting to celebrate Writeblr Summerfest. I have one question that I'm really hoping isn't a spoiler. What's the relationship dynamic between Natasa and Carina? Do the werewolf and werejaguar live in the same house?
hi, thanks for visiting!
the answer to that is that most of the time they do!
they're adopted sisters who've spent at least 8 years together, considering they're 16, and they did live in the same house.
however, due to the fact they were getting older and their werewolf/werejaguar natures respectively started to clash for reasons that are somewhat spoilery, they were split up in order to attend school in different places. they do still live together during certain holidays/breaks, however.
their dynamic is that they clash and argue a lot, but are still always there for each other when it counts.

Ollivanders, Three Broomsticks, and Weasley’s Wizard Wheezes.
Harry Potter Locations Themed Asks
Ollivanders: If you could design your own wand what would you want it to look like?
I absolutely adore Queenie’s wand, so something with mother of pearl and a nice dark wood would probably be my go-to
Three Broomsticks: Firewhiskey, Butterbeer or Mulled Mead?
I’m not a big lover of whiskey or mead, so I’d probably have to go for butterbeer! Though (possibly unpopular opinion, I wasn't massively keen on the butterbeer at either the HP Studio Tour or the Wizarding World in Florida. When I read about butterbeer in the books, my mind conjured up the taste of a caramel white hot chocolate with butterscotch schnapps, though of course that’s probably far from what JKR intended it to taste like!
Weasley’s Wizard Wheezes: What are three things that make you laugh?
- Our banter as the DLWP characters
- Jack’s chaotic editing for the DLWP
- Bee’s outrageous iteration of Voldie in DLWP
... Can you tell that DLWP makes me laugh?
