Really random things I have noticed cause I listen to all the Hatchetfield songs on repeat dear lord help me It's all Hatchetfield, ITS ALSLS HATCENAT
Ahem people probably know these already just let me go insane <\3
•In let it out, Prof. Hidgens says "and I know it's a singular voice, Paul," which is also Pokey's title- The Singular Voice.
•What Do You Want Paul can be considered a really bad summary I think. Paul doesn't know what he wants, so he becomes apart of the hive. He's unsure when he tells Bill he'll go with him to save Alice and overall after What Do You Want Paul whenever he has to make a decision he's just unsure (excluding before America Is Great Again and after Show Stoppin' Number)
•In Show Me Your Hands one of the cops says 'Her cat is dead' which I find funny cause 1. Charolette wears a cat sweater and later dies 2. Hey, Melissa reference before it came out I'm gonna sob
•I find it so funny it's called The Guy Who DIDN'T Like Musicals. I remember when I first watched it I said "This implies he starts liking them," and that's exactly what happened-
•BACK TO WHAT DO YOU WANT PAUL- In Let It Out, HE FUCKING- HE SAYS "It doesn't matter what I want," FURTHER PROVING THAT BECAUSE PAUL DOESN'T HAVE A SET GOAL HE DIES- and even MORE he gets a whole like 30 seconds singing about what he might want. "Am I crazy," for hating musicals "I don't think so- maybe I've always been," crazy for not liking them (read that as one sentence without the thingys [""] and the without the words not in them- then together if that makes sense <\3)
•In Let It Out and Inevitable there is a very audible difference between the hives voice and Paul's voice
•In Tied Up My Heart, Sam tells Charlotte to 'break him open' and that's what Sam does to Charlotte. Yes he says "Now I'm gonna free up your heart, Charlotte," but I'm pretty sure the human heart isn't located in the stomach <3
•Also in Tied Up My Heart- Sam says "I don't wanna die alone," and he doesn't. He dies with Charlotte <3 relationship goals frfr
•"Do you wanna save the planet? Of course you wanna save the planet, well there's just one way you can do it by singing a song," and that's what he does, thank you Lah Dee Dah Dah Day.

Hatchetfield, Continuity, and Eldritch Horror
So, Nerdy Prudes Must Die just came out and it reminded me how much I love the Hatchetfield series and I want to talk about one aspect that makes it so unique and interesting. Continuity.
If you don't know Hatchetfield is a series of stories by Starkid that has three stage musicals and a series called Nightmare Time and a short film. It is a horror anthology series where in every story some different supernatural or other horrible event occurs where characters die or the world ends in different ways. But that is kinda of not true because anthology isn't quite the right word.
The characters stay the same as the inhabitants of the small town of Hatchetfield but each story focuses on different characters at different times and the interesting part is that while certain individuals will act differently because of something related to the horror or supernatural elements mostly they always stick to canonical personalities and histories, and it is heavily implied that the events all actually happen and there is some wider story where there are multiple timelines.
This creates two really cool effects.
One is that you slowly start to learn more about the characters as you encounter them in various stories, and different things come about depending on how the current threat affects them. It also gives more information than any length single timeline would because we get to see what pushes them to different points. From NPMD for example, the story takes place two years after The Guy Who Didn't Like Musicals in which the world ends and Paul and Emma fall in love, but we see in NPMD that Paul for the first time gives Emma his number perhaps hinting at what the timeline would be for Paul and Emma's relationship to mature without the intervention of a world ending disaster.
The other thing is about Eldritch Horror. Hatchetfield's core story revolves around the Lords in Black a group of Elder Gods who orchestrate most of the events. In most cases Eldritch Horror has difficulty truly selling the concept of creatures outside of our dimension who are not bound by time and space, and even if they demonstrate their power to the characters, as an audience it doesn't have a huge effect. But with Hatchetfield, because as an audience we are aware of the multiple timelines, we take on the role of the eldritch beings and see the stories from their perspective. In NPMD they make references to other stories implying that it is the same Lords in Black everytime with Tinky talking about having "another Spankofski" for his collection(an episode of Nightmare Time.) They also play with having the audience being the perspective of these Eldritch beings with the stagecraft like in Black Friday where entering the Black and White has the president move in from the audience, or in TGWDLM the ending has the audience clap for the end of the show with Emma screaming for help and unsure why the audience won't help her.
Its a really cool format that I personally have never encountered before and really sells the horror and makes you more invested in the characters.

Just finished watching NPMD and here are my observations:
Oh starting right away with Richie's death
OHHHH It's the first time we actually hear Lauren and Jon sing together, even for just a lil bit
The Watcher World callback with the hammer and the phone
Every Mariah character: MY PICTURES ON MY PHONE, Me: gurl back it up on Cloud
Awwww Ruth
That one person who cheered louder than anyone else when Pete stood up for himself
Everyone collectively going "awww" when Pete shows up with the black eye
The Chasitys have such a cute color scheme. Would wear. But like. Mark's outfit has such gay vibes tho. Like. Stereotypical gay outfit.
Pfft that one person who cackled the Loudest during the dinner scene
Max, climbing in the tub with his jeans on: *vine voice* He's washing him and his jeans. He's washing him and his jeans.
Oh Mark showing up after Dirty Girl is literally like that scene with Hanschen during My Junk in Spring Awakening.
LISTEN. About two years ago, I was watching SAF and my dad looked over my shoulder AND HE THOUGHT JOEY WAS LIN MANUEL MIRANDA
Max: I'm gonna kick your ass!, Me: *Ted voice* Not his head
Wait. But his reaction to the prank is so wholesome and precious actually.
Gurl. Just let it stay an accident and destroy the footage instead. Don't be stupid.
I remember saying Bryce as Brenda. Glad that it happened.
Hatchet Town is basically just "Your Fault" from Into the Woods huh
Pete and Ruth sound a lot like Scrags and Esther ngl
I love Kyle. Himbo dude.
The shift when Clivesdale is introduced.
The way everyone also awwed when Richie got appreciated. I don't think a show goes by without Jon's character being loved
It's interesting that the hs kids don't want to be mean and aren't inherently mean, they were just pressured into being mean
Ohhh. He got bedazzled. Like Edward Cullen.
I want the cast recording so I can hear Jon and Will sing at each other more clearly
Boy Jerry's a reporter? I mean sure, I assumed they have jobs when it's off-season for camp, but I didn't expect journalism
What does Bryce's character know about Boy Jerry's murder spree tho?
Everyone's talking about Boy Jerry throwing Girl Jeri under the bus, but not Dan agreeing with Boy Jerry in accusing Donna
Hatchet Town is just Your Fault from Into the Woods huh
Steph protecting Ruth parallels Steph looking after Hannah
hc that Joey's character in the bbq monologues is whoever played Joey's roles in the Hatchetfield production of TTO
Jon's delivery ohmygod lmaoooo
Oh and Mariah's character, Caitlyn/Kaitlin, feels like a mini Zoey
Ruth sweetieeee you are so brilliant
Ruth having a mushroom on her shirt like the "I'm a failure" meme
The way they pull off Max's teleportation is so so good
Kim is the queen of horrified screams now
Tumblr media
YESSSS HE SAID THE MIRANDA RIGHTS he ain't got a warrant tho
Considering tgwdlm was 2018, and it's 2023 now, then it HAS been FIVE YEARS since Peter asked for his hot chocolate from Emma
GARY PUPPY PAID ATTENTION WHEN HE HEARD PAUL. Because of he still recognizes Jon.
Tumblr media
Pfft Paul having more balls than Pete
Okay it's vague enough that it can be interpreted that Paul doesn't die. I didn't think Emma would do the Linda screech tho. It's always enough to startle and disorient tho.
THE COSTUMES THE COSTUMES I LOVE THE COSTUMES
Oh I have a theory behind what Tinky says. But it's going in a separate post
The LiBs going "WE DON'T WANT YOUR PHONE"
In Once Upon a Time, it is customary to give up "the thing you love most" in exchange for extremely powerful magic.
Ahahaha as a Catholic I can confirm that Grace's opinion on Catholicism is mostly correct
I feel like if Pete did die, it would prevent him from turning into a horny bastard like Ted tho. Which may potentially save him from Tinky
And Pete letting himself get shot to save the woman he loves, would parallel Ted's sacrifice in Ape Man
That one person who very audibly goes "WHAT THE FUCK" when Max takes the bullet for Pete
Grace saying her type is dudes who come back from the dead. And I'm like. "AND THEY'RE BOTH RIPPED AS FUCK"
Annnd now the tables have turned on Joey after eating Sally out in the choir room.
Aaaat least she can't get knocked up?
Where'd she get that cigarette tho
The hair flip that accompanied the spin
GARY PUPPY CUDDLED UP TO THE LAPTOP WHEN HE HEARD WIGGLY
Kim's teacher character is so cute
The "awwww" when Pete and Steph came to homecoming together. Also Pete's bow tie will always match whatever Steph's wearing
Are we all in agreement that Jon and Will's homecoming characters are dating?
Grace. YOU ASKED.
Hmm. A soul-sucking spell especially targeting guys? Sounds like what Sheila had.
"Guys who came before"? Who else did she hook up with between the ghost's death and homecoming?
It's the return of Angela's iconic witch laugh
But Grace how long is that gonna work out for you. You gonna eventually use contraception? Have magic contraception? Or eventually get knocked up? Just sayin'

one of the first instances in which we hear the inevitable leitmotif in the guy who didn't like musicals is during the scene where emma and paul are walking through the audience, commenting on how it is an "alleyway lined with tons of shrubs." but why is it playing here? emma and paul have a number of previous scenes together, including the beanies "think about the implications" scene, which would seem like a more fitting place to put it, at first glance.
to me, this is foreshadowing. the characters' ignorance of the audience is played for laughs in this scene, and it's evident that the audience isn't a part of the story at this point. emma and paul don't know about the audience, and this isn't anything abnormal; they're characters. they aren't supposed to know. but what happens when inevitable, the song, actually plays at the end of the show? emma becomes aware of the audience. she knows she's on a stage, being watched by people who will not and cannot help her. paul, too, is now aware of this previously imperceptible audience. he's part of the hive. he's performing for them. the inevitable motif plays as emma and paul walk through the audience in this scene, seemingly unable to perceive them, because the hive, or pokey, is emphasising the ironic nature of this scene.
and when you think further about it, this theme of the inevitable leitmotif's usage follows throughout the entirety of the guy who didn't like musicals. another scene in which it plays is when emma warns paul before he leaves: "if those things get you, they're gonna make you sing, and dance .... so don't you let 'em."—"emma? there comes a time in every man's life when he has to draw a line in the sand. and I? will never. be in a musical," (not exact quote). the inevitable leitmotif plays softly in the background as emma says her line because it is tragically ironic. emma is giving paul an ultimatum: don't die. don't give in. of course, this is the exact opposite of what happens. apotheosis is paul's inescapable fate. emma's words are accompanied by the inevitable leitmotif here as a way of the universe (pokey, maybe) laughing at her.
(it's important to note that inevitable cuts off as soon as paul says "never" in his line during this exchange. this is because, well, his line isn't ironic. he will never be in a musical. at this, this form of him won't.)
the inevitable leitmotif plays in the final moments of the exchange between paul and general john macnamara, beginning right after macnamara asks paul if he likes coffee and ending right after paul answers "no, sir," to macnamara's question about whether he likes musicals. in this scene, paul's most recognisable traits are exhibited. he likes coffee and doesn't like musicals, the irony here being that these very traits are what made him susceptible to the hive in the first place. his penchant for coffee is what led him to meet emma, and wanting her was what led to his end. he doesn't like musicals, but is afraid that he could like them, a fear the hive easily preys on.
it sneakily plays while emma says "if we get through this, I would love to just see a nice—SILENT—movie with you. but in case we don't... kiss me?" the mordancy of using inevitable here is evident.
the inevitable motif is utilised not only as a signal of inevitability and futility, but also to convey irony—comedic irony, for pokey/the hivemind—in the guy who didn't like musicals. it's a genius device of foreshadowing for paul and emma's eventual fate, because the audience doesn't know that it's used as such until the story is re-told (i.e., we watch tgwdlm again), which is what is implied could be occurring in-universe.

Y'ALL I CAME UP WITH A TGWDLM THEORY/HEADCANON
Spoilers for The Guy Who Didn't Live Musicals below
So what if Hatchetfield (and eventually Clivesdale) are trapped in a musical time loop, living, dying, singing, and dancing constantly over and over, reliving the end of the world forever because that's how shows work: they get played over and over for different audiences 8 days a week. After Emma presumably dies, they sing "The Guy Who Didn't Like Musicals" and the time loop starts over.
Oh holy shit, there's some implications in that as well-
(this legit came to me as I was writing)
So in that number, they're all insulting Paul for not joining them or liking musicals. It's an opening number, yes, and they're just introducing him to the audience, but for the point I'm about to make, his actor isn't double cast. And, yeah, it's because he's the main character, but listen to my point: because of those two things, what if he isn't actually infected yet he's still trapped in the loop. Like, everyone who's been infected is multi-casted and is clearly infected, not tricks whatsoever. Paul, when we believe he's infected, doesn't make it obvious at first. He also sings in "Inevitable," quote "what if the only choice is you have to sing to survive, we must go on with the show, it's inevitable." He's definitely somewhat infected (with his conflict in "Let it Out") which is why he CAN sing, but he CHOOSES to so it doesn't fully infect him and he doesn't die.
TL;DR/lemmie make my points clearer:
Hatchetfield is stuck in a loop after the song "The Guy Who Didn't Like Musicals" ends (Emma is in the opening number with all of the infected, which is why the time loop starts after that song ends rather than after Emma is infected)
Paul isn't entirely infected (he has no participating role in the beginning song whatsoever but he does have that conflict with himself in "Let it Out")
He chooses to sing so he doesn't die or fully get indulged in the musical shit (his actor is not multi-casted, he gets insulted by the infected in the opening number for not joining them, and he isn't obvious when he's infected [everyone else enters and immediately bursts out into song or is generally creepy when they've been infected], "What if the only choice is you have to sing to survive")
Random point I realized even more while writing, Paul is the only character who isn't at least a bit eccentric/energetic; he's rational/not over the top and only over the top when scared after seeing the musical shit for the first time

I'm currently watching Nightmare Time, which is a very interesting way of trying to tailor their structure to zoom, and gives a lot of depth to various characters from the musicals, while having a bit less musical, due to being a zoom read
so having seen the first two episodes and enjoyed that, I can go back and think about the guy who didn't like musicals, black friday, and nerdy prudes must die
obviously the guy who didn't like musicals was going to appeal to me, because I think the concept is great (and we all know The Guy who doesn't like musicals) and the way they executed it/the way the singing manifested was pretty great -- I'd want to watch it all again anyway, but also with this one specifically to pinpoint the musical references in the music. the ending when the audience is clapping and emma is screaming for help is my favourite of the three, simply because... well it's so fucked up
I think out of the three that black friday felt a tad messier in story structure, but wiggly was so good as a villain and I liked the mains so much that it didn't matter (+ it gave one of the creepiest songs of the three musicals). the final song was very beautiful, and I feel like you really get that big hint at a deeper Lore that's lurking beneath the individual stories (there's a bit of that with tgwdlm but here it shines through stronger). uncle wiley is amazing/my favourite of the three musical villains
and then nerdy prudes must die, which holy moly, took the best things from the first two and amplified them, and in which I think every song is a banger! the characters are amazing, grace chastity's arc! and a perfectly executed romantic arc, and the inherent tragedy of ruth and ritchie, and then. the Lords In Black. truly feels like one has earned something spectacular by the time they come along and wow are they amazing. i almost wish the editing had given us more wide shots during the summoning scene, so one could see them all on stage simultaneously (i believe there was only a brief glimpse of that), but fuck. you want to see a million more things centered around them -- appreciate how the ending is more open than first suggested, I have no idea if they're continuing to make work in this verse, but there's plenty more to explore, I'm sure
and I'm sure a lot will be explored in nightmare time too

I agonized over which to pick because I just want to ask about all your fics in progress!! I narrowed it down to two and that's just going to have to be ok
the world is staged and the script is set (you cannot change the ending)
Jukeboxes and Maple Syrup
Tumblr media
its very funny you pick those two because those like. two of the only three on that list that ISNT lord huron related lmao. those are both hatchetfield fics ive started in secret. regardless those are the main ones im working on right now SO
the world is staged and the script is set (you cannot change the ending) is a fic based on the ending of TGWDLM where like. you know how in the credits where Emma starts begging the audience for help? and like. you know how in TTO how the audience is also referred to by Bliklotep's title? soooo the fic is the ending but i throw him in the mix and ramp the already existing horror of "begging for help and being ignored a cheering crowd" by going "realizing said crowd has been treating your suffering and death as a source of amusement right before you die". only fun times in hatchetfield
"She stumbles to the edge of the stage. The stitches in her leg have come undone and there’s blood seeping through the bandage. That is real. Emma is real, and she needs to help right now."
Jukeboxes and Maple Syrup is a fic that takes place directly after the end of Yellow Jacket that focuses on Daniel and Sophia like. right after the ending. we dont really see them after the Otho fight and we still have no clue is Sophia is even ALIVE and also i miss them dearly. the fic mostly focuses on Daniel trying not to have a panic attack in Miss Retros because one friend is missing after almost dying and the other is in the hospital after also almost maybe dying and he doesn't really know what to do. Not a whole lot of plot it's mostly him trying to deal with that whole. mess. luckily he's got Miss Holloway and Duke to make things a bit easier (responsible adults? in MY hatchetfield? its honestly only these two but its better than nothing)
"He feels so stupid. Sophia is in the hospital and she might never wake up. Hannah is missing and could be kidnapped or dead or worse. And he’s just sitting here in a cozy diner with pancakes and orange juice, and Hannah’s Jacket but not Hannah and not Sophia."

kathy’s apotheosis in tgwdlm would be like those fanfics where emma goes “does it hurt” and infected!paul says “nnnnooooo” and she goes “guess i’ll die”
Dcuhdxhidxxh yeaahh-
Neptune doesn't even have to get directly infected by anyone. He's practically been microdosing on the apotheosis ever since Pokey possessed his teddy bear.
He's the epitome of "Am I crazy? Maybe I've always been?" where the answer is YES.

Pt 2 of The Guide: Hatchetfield (also made by Starkid but it felt like this should be its own category). Every story in the Hatchetfield series takes place in different timeline I say this so your not confused by certain things that happen to characters in one story not having happened in another. There a few stories that do actually take place in the same time line but I'll mention it when that's the case. Pretty much everyone loves Hatchetfield series, it's basically a whole fandom on its own. I could talk about it and theories on it forever. It's all horror comedy.
The Guy Who Didn't Like Musicals (TGWDLM). The first of the Hatchetfield series. Now, SK actually wrote Nerdy Prudes Must Die (NPMD), then Black Friday, then TGWDLM but TGWDLM was released first bc it was the easiest to make and the best to introduce ppl into the world and they made it be good as a stand alone in case it didn't do well and therefore not make the rest of the series. And it totally does work well as a stand alone. Even though I think Twisted is the best SK musical, this one is actually my favorite. It's really great, hilarious, awesome music, everything's great, and it was the first musical of theirs I watched, its original and not parody and I love the characters. Have you heard the audios "please god I just want a black coffee!" or "were about the same age how come I didn't know you in high school?" "you probably went to hatchetfield high I went to sycamore" because this is where those came from.
Summary: This borning office worker named Paul hates musicals and has a crush on a barista, Emma. A meteor hits their town and a zombie apocalypse starts, but it's no normal zombie apocalypse. Everyone is taken over and becomes sorta an alien and they're all become apart of this musical hive mind breaking into song and dance and getting others to become apart of the hive mind. Paul, his coworkers, and the barista now have try and survive this apotheosis. Trailer
Black Friday (BF). It's about the wonderful totally beloved American holiday Black Friday. Alot of ppl don't see it as that funny but personally I think it's pretty funny? Yeah it doesn't have the most jokes but all of the jokes that are in there are very funny. It is overall meant to be more serious though so.
Summary: A new toy comes out, called a Tickle Me Wiggly, that everyone wants to get for their kid. Tom Houston wants to get it to help try and help mend his relationship his son Tim bc Tom's wife/Tim's mom died the year before and Tom sees it as his fault. Tom meets his old high school girlfriend Becky and their love begins to rekindle. Lex works at the store Toy Zone and she want to get herself, her boyfriend, Ethan, and her younger sister, Hannah, out of Hatchetfield as soon as possible. Everyone starts fighting over the toy, going far to get the toy, even the president of the US has to get involved. The characters I mentioned all attempt to survive through the day. And it turns out there's more behind the toy than just a cute ball of fluff. Trailer
The next few summaries are probably gonna sound neater and are also gonna be shorter. This is cause I for the most part just took the summaries SK gave for them and just like ever so slightly changed them. Nightmare Time (NMT) are script readings, but they still have songs in them. Also yes some of the links for the stories lead to the same video, don't worry, this is because every episode of NMT season 1 had two stories in it. There's two trailers I'm gonna give you for season 1. Here's the first one. And here's the second.
The Hatchetfield Ape-Man (THAM). Absolutely hilarious and ridiculous, there is a few more serious moments but over and just super goofy.
Summary: Lucy has been searching for the Hatchetfield Ape-Man for many years and nearly gives up when she finds out Professor Hidgens has discovered the Ape-Man.
Watcher World (WW). More serious, one of my faves of NMT and a lot of ppl's faves of NMT.
Summary: Bill and Alice go to local theme park Watcher World for a day of daddy daughter fun! They don't get along well. And the theme park is no help and there's some dark secret going on in there too.
Forever and Always (F&A). Good mix of silly and serious leaning a bit towards silly. Has everyone's faves Paul and Emma. It's an extremely interesting story imo.
Summary: Paul and Emma are getting married! Except Emma has a dark secret that comes to light and their relationship may become in danger.
Time Bastard (TB). My personal NMT fave but that's probably partially cause I'm werid. Also a good mix of silly and serious leaning a bit more towards serious. This and F&A take place in the same timeline.
Summary: Ted accidentally discovers time travel and things go a little wild and he messes a lot of stuff up.
Jane's A Car (JAC). More sillyness. It's, not as a goofy as THAM but still very silly. Ppl kinda overlook this one and yeah it's not my fave but the reason it's overlooked is really mainly bc there's a particular scene that's. Very goofy and inappropriate and silly. And everyone latched onto the insanity of that scene and kinda ignored the rest.
Summary: Tom gets his old car back, the car his wife died in, and it turns out, she's haunting the car.
The Witch In The Web (WITW). The most serious of NMT1. Lots of lore. Great.
Summary: Hannah's been having nightmares of an evil witch and her "imaginary" friend Webby goes missing. She gets the help of her social worker and his friend who has powers.
All of NMT2 takes place in the same timeline together, some eps are more connected than others, some just make references, but they do all take place in the same time and for the part all right about the same time. Again some of the links lead to the same video because some of the episodes had two stories in them. Trailer
Honey Queen (HQ). This is a really fun one, it's just terrible ppl doing terrible things. Very fun.
Summary: It's time for Hatchetfield's annual Honey Festival, and therefore also the Honey Queen Pageant. The rich Linda Monroe and a barista Zoey Chambers both enter the Pageant. Linda wants her dad's attention and Zoey wants to get out of Hatchetfield. They are each other's biggest competition, and they both want it bad and will do anything they can to win. But theres also some secrets happening with Pageant.
Perky's Buds (PB). A lot of ppl don't like this one. It's not my fave but I do really love the villain and there's lots of funny lines, it's kinda a stoner comedy mixed with horror comedy, also got some important lore.
Summary: Emma finally has gotten her dream pot farm. Unfortunately for her Nighthawks keep eating her weed and her neighbours aren't happy about her farm. So she and her farm hand now must defend their farm.
Abstinence Camp (AC). I love this one and love the characters. It's fairly inappropriate but it's still great. It's also got the two best songs of the season.
Summary: Nerdy Prude Grace somewhat accidentally starts a rumor about the mayor's daughter, Steph, being pregnant, which lands her in Abstinence Camp, along with Grace who goes there for fun, and along with nerdy but not so prudey Pete who doesn't want to be there ethier. At camp there's some odd consulers and theres a legend of a supposed killer lerking in the woods.
Daddy. Yes that is the full title of the story. It's a goofy one but there's lore. It's similar to JAC where the funny name kinds overshadows the story. But it has two of best actors as the main characters and they work so well together. It also will make you feel a lot of sympathy for a character who before this you'll have not seen a lot of but will probably hate before this.
Summary: Frank, the owner of Toyzone, is running out business thanks to online buying. Then he gets to together with his best customer's mom who is rich. But turns out this family has a secret. There's a reason their last name is Young. And being a dad isn't that fun.
Killer Track (KT). This is a very sad one. You will be completely emotionally destroyed. I love it. Everyone loves it. Everyone's sad thanks to it.
Summary: A song that kills people after being listened too. It's a classic fake hoax. Except this time it's real. Rose meets a strange guy and who has her listen to the song. As time runs out and she gets closer to death she seeks help from a certain social worker and witchy woman. But times running out for the town too and they need to stop the song for being heard by anyone else.
Yellow Jacket (YJ). MMM SO MUCH LORE AND ANGST/SADNESS IN THIS ONE TOO! Very good everyone loves this one a ton, including me ofc.
Summary: After Hannah has accident in ship class her, Lex and Ethan find themselves in a lot of debt. Luckily for them Hannah has a gift, a power, and after a man sees what she can he brings her and Ethan to a deadly competition for her to join, and its high paying. But will Hannah be able to survive?
Nerdy Prudes Must Die (NPMD). I think this is the funniest Hatchetfield show and I love the character so much and the music is some of the best starkid music imo.
Summary: When the biggest losers at Hatchetfield High unwittingly complete an ancient, evil ritual, they unleash an all- powerful, angry spirit with a grudge against nerds. That’s when Stephanie Lauter, Grace Chasity, and a cast of social rejects must fight to save themselves and nerdy prudes everywhere. But can any of them survive the fury of a bully from beyond the grave? Trailer
Summary: the starlight theatre wanted to produce a show made by an aspiring local writer, and they ended up choosing Professor Hidgens and his show Workin' Boys, but suggest he make some changes to the show. Trailer.
Workin' Boys. You can buy tickets to the Hatchetfield Halloween Party to see this. It's so cool to see something in Hatchetfield filmed like this. Jeff does a great job at playing Hidgens and the whole short film is really fun.

just had such a weird dream... so i found a clip of one of starkid's new musicals (that i haven't caught up on) of wiggly's full spider form, so i could show it to eli bc they were interested in it, but i ended up thinking... maybe i should watch it. it starts out with a chase scene through farmland under moonlight that's almost like a full movie production - you follow this lesbian couple (they're split up but looking for each other), paul and emma, bill looking for alice and ted ends up falling behind, caught by the light of this truck which presents itself as the main danger. bill only barely escapes it. then the camera is slightly distorted as it chases the butch of the lesbian couple (who's holding their child) and as the camera approaches, you know somethings going to happen... it slowly closes in on her, and then a pumpkin-headed creature raises its scythe and the camera cuts out.
then cut forward, and somehow some of the cast has met up. there's the femme lesbian now with a few others from ytd... and she's the first to go forward when the speaker asks her to choose from the display of. pride flags? but not general pride flags, just. identity-specific hue shifts ._. (like nby lesbian, butch lesbian, transfem flag, nby bisexual, etc.)
so anyway, she goes forward and chooses a femme lesbian flag and she's. the first to get 'hit' by the truck that killed ted...? it rumbles down the road and swings past her, and then she's gone. it continues like this with anzu, romeo (or reko...? who tries to change it up w a flag they personally don't identify with), a few others that are actually starkid, and then we're down to three people: sara, shin, and shin ai.
shin ai is shaking when he steps forward, bc. well! he's probably going to die. he tries to joke about it with the other two like. well i'll just choose this one because i've always liked cool colors. and he holds onto the fence bc he literally can't stand as the truck swings by. but somehow, he doesn't die. shin is shocked and his voice kind of wavers when he raises it, demanding to know how the ai survived it, but sara stops him from stepping forward because there's another truck that ends up crashing into a civilian's car. only after a minute do they step forward and shin grabs the ai by the jacket and pulls him off the ground, asking how he survived - because it certainly wasn't 'wailing on about how you didn't want to die'
but sara realizes, because the truck is now idle, it let's them see the 'stats'... one: shin tsukimi ai deaths (7) (assumed to be from midori's use) two: demand (100+) ... with the second stat quickly rising to the thousands and eventually breaking the first stat / glitching it out so it couldn't show. shin is briefly distracted wondering if they can explore the truck, but then i woke up... also this was all in the first act so like. i assume we would've found most of the 'dead' people (whether they were hostages or turned into. essentially zombies, like tgwdlm)
oh also for some reason fives is theorized as palpatine in this musical...? i have no clue how that's relevant. also this musical was called the resolute / the resort / or something...

I'm thinking about how Emma is a genuinely kind person who presents as an asshole, and Paul is an asshole who presents as a nice person.
In TGWDLM, Emma is consistently kind to those who deserve it, she's gentle and sweet to Charlotte without fault, calming her down when she's distressed. When Bill is in danger during Join Us And Die, Emma yells he has a daughter, remembering important details about Paul's friends just because she knows they're good people. When Ted is going off about how going to save Alice is a suicide mission, she doesn't hesitate to offer to go too, though she has no personal stake in it whatsoever. It's just the right thing to do. Emma has a sharp tongue, she'll lash out at anyone who deserves it, but she is a good person, you just have to look at her actions, not her words.
Meanwhile, Paul's first scene is him proving that he isn't willing to do very simple things for his friends and coworkers, simply because he doesn't want to. Bill desperately wants him there as a buffer between him and his daughter, Bill believes Paul could help, and Paul turns him down. Very bluntly. Melissa seems eager to have Paul join the softball league, and he doesn't even consider it. He overhears Charlotte having an upsetting phone call, and instead of comforting her, he tells her she can't be smoking in the office. He straight up argues with a woman who simply wants him to donate to charity, lying to get out of it, and when caught on it, lashes out. He's definitely polite, every time he says something that could easily be seen as just as brash as what Emma says, it's with such a polite air that it isn't perceived that way. And later, with his grand gestures, going with Bill to save Alice, there's a reluctance to it, despite the fact that he knows and cares about both of them. Sure, when it comes down to it, he'll do what's right, like going back for Emma instead of just taking the safety offered, going to blow up the meteor when there's nothing else left. He's definitely capable of doing what needs to be done, but he's selfish. He won't do small things for other people unless it benefits him. He's generally so polite unless pushed that he appears nice. But a lot of his actions speak otherwise.
I think that's a lot of what I love about them, as a duo. Both of them present one way, but deep down, prove to be something entirely different. In their own way, they're both kind, they're both assholes, and that's why it works.

the virgin ted vs the chad peter
ted:
verbally harasses nearly every woman he interacts with
literally admits that jenny is the only woman he doesn't see as an object for sex
runs away and leaves paul and emma to die in tgwdlm, taking their only weapon with him, while he was talking about how much paul's friendship means to him
totally complains abt the friendzone i mean lets be realistic here
peter
undeniably horny, but he doesn't harass the girls around him (hell, the most sexual encounter in the episode is initiated by steph, not him)
actually really likes and respects steph, and refuses to judge her based on the rumors grace spread about her
his attempts at flirting don't feel creepy and gross
when lumber-axe is advancing on steph, he does everything he can to try and direct his attention away from her, even while his leg is broken
he gets the stacey's melons bit, which is technically irrelevant to my point, but it's also the best joke in abstinence camp, so he's got that going for him

Hatchetfield & Happy Endings
Mostly just 'cause, I wanted to make a list of every Hatchetfield story so far & see how many have happy vs. unhappy endings. (And sure, some of these are debatable since most are more Bittersweet than anything, but I just thought it would be interesting.)
TGWDLM -> Unhappy Ending, everyone dies and is resurrected as part of the Hive.
Black Friday -> Unhappy Ending, though they stop the cult & Wiggly's birth, everyone gets nuked by Russia anyway.
Ok, this list is kinda long actually, so I'm gonna put a 'Keep Reading' before the Nightmare Time stories. NOTE! There are SPOILERS for Nightmare Time 2 below the cut.
The Hatchetfield Ape Man -> Happy. Lucy escapes Hidgens/Ted's scheme and reunites with Chumby.
Watcher World -> Happy. Bill and Alice both manage to overcome Blinky's influence and drive home together, even becoming closer as father & daughter (Alice following Bill on Instagram)
Forever & Always -> Unhappy. I mean, it's happy for Paul 23 and Emdroid, but the real Emma Perkins gets murdered and has her life stolen by Emdroid
Time Bastard -> Unhappy. Ted accidentally kills the only girl he ever genuinely loved, loses his mind, spends years as Homeless Man, gets killed by the man he considered his best friend, then gets trapped inside the Bastard's Box for eternity.
Jane's A Car -> Unhappy. Tom gets taken away, believed to be insane & Becky's body is taken over by Jane's spirit, unbeknownst to Tim. presumably Becky's spirit ended up in the car, which got torn apart for scrap
The Witch In The Web -> Happy. Miss Holloway and Hannah manage to escape Nightmare Time, Hannah and Webby defeat Willabella, hint that Miss Holloway can help Lex & Hannah reunite and save them from their mother
Honey Queen -> Unhappy. Linda wins the pageant, believes herself victorious, only for her own father to reveal himself to be part of the Cult Of Starry Children and Sacrifice her to Nibbly.
Perky's Buds -> Unhappy. Despite escaping Ezekiel and surviving the fire, Emma & Ziggs are arrested for decimating an endangered species.
Abstinence Camp -> Happy. Sure, Grace taking over the camp isn't happy per se, but the main characters survive the attacks of Lumberaxe, so, swings and roundabouts.
Daddy -> Unhappy. Sherman invokes the power of the Lords in Black, then basically blackmails Frank into being his 'daddy' forever.
Killer Track -> Happy. Ok yes, Duke forgetting Miss Holloway is heartbreaking and most certainly not happy - but big picture, the Killer Track is stopped and Kale defeated, saving everyone at the Honey Festival. Plus, Duke & Miss 'Holiday' at the end had an optimistic tint to it
Yellow Jacket -> Happy. Obviously, sad that Ethan doesn't get to go with Lex & Hannah at the end, but the trio defeated Otho & Charles and all lived at the end.
Workin' Boys -> unknown
Nerdy Prudes Must Die -> unknown
So, the vast majority of Hatchetfield stories have unhappy endings, but currently 5/14 of them do have somewhat happy endings.
Nick has said that he and Matt do have some kind of 'endgame' planned for the Hatchetfield series (which will not necessarily be NPMD), so you have to wonder - will it be a triumph of good over evil? Or will it lean more towards the bittersweet side of things?
Anyway, just something I thought would be interesting to keep track of.

Wiz_is_bored (ao3) fic masterpost (Hatchetfield, Firebringer, Centaurworld, Beetlejuice the Musical, Ride the Cyclone, & Nimona)
I am ALWAYS open to both general fic-related asks and character asks because I am bored and crave interaction
(Colour Code: Hatchetfield, Firebringer, Centaurworld, Beetlejuice (various/mixed canons), Ride the Cyclone, Nimona)
Multi-Chapter plot-focused fics:
Wildfire - Incomplete (16/?) - 44,265 words - Firebringer - graphic depictions of violence, please read the tags
Kidnapped, abused and exploited as a slave, and now on the run in a foreign country, Zazzalil turns to a life of crime to survive. Meanwhile her tribe will do whatever it takes to find her.
tumblr content tagged as ‘wildfire fic’
I’m Going to Live Twice - Incomplete (15/?) - 52,397 words - Hatchetfield - graphic depictions of violence, major character death (though this is in reference to events before the story), please read the tags
Usually when you die and your body is donated for scientific research that's that. But usually that scientific research doesn't include a pathogen with the power to reanimate, and you don't end up as a zombified lab rat for a questionable branch of the US millitary.
It's a stroke of luck that Paul and Emma were given a second shot at being alive, and they're not going to sit around wasting it.
tumblr content tagged as ‘igtlt fic’
Smoke and Feathers - Incomplete (4/?) - 8,048 words - Hatchetfield/Firebringer crossover - no archive warnings apply, light angst
Hatchetfield has always been a weird place full of weird people, since the dawn of time. And sometimes those people stick around. Emma just wanted to give her partner a taste of backpacking in the local witchwood; she didn't mean to bring a wandering fire spirit home with her.
tumblr content tagged as ‘sf fic’
Laboratory Four - Incomplete (8/12) -  26,339 words - TGWDLM - graphic depictions of violence, please read the tags
Ten years ago, Henry Hidgens' questionable experiments resulted in Emma - a not-quite-human intended to be little more than a test of his abilities and a songwriting tool. But feelings got in the way, and now his not-quite-human not-quite-daughter is allowed to roam the house and go out for groceries and walks and even earn a small wage assisting him. But problems arise when she starts doing things she's not allowed to. Namely, making a friend. A friend who helps her to realise that maybe her father isn't as great as she's always thought, and maybe there's more to her origins than she's been led to believe.
tumblr content tagged as ‘lab 4 fic’
Blood in the Birdbath - Complete (10/10) - 16,660 words - Beetlejuice (the musical) - no archive warnings apply, please read the tags

The Book in the Birdbath - Incomplete (4/?) - 7,497 words - Beetlejuice (the musical) - no archive warnings apply, please read the tags

Bugebroph - Incomplete (5/?) - 37,276 words - Beetlejuice (musical with film elements) - graphic depictions of violence
After impulsively stealing her from the living world as a baby, Beetlejuice takes it upon himself to raise Lydia as a half-feral honorary demon and Resident Nuisance to the Department for the Recently Deceased. And they both expect her life to continue in much the same way - until, at fifteen, she's finally allowed to assist in a bio-exorcism, accompanying her caretaker to assist in the removal of one Charles Deetz.

Anarchy's Apprentice - Incomplete (2/?) - 8,994 words - Beetlejuice (the musical)/Centaurworld crossover - no archive warnings apply

tumblr content tagged as 'crocodile beetlejuice hours'
The Firstborn - Complete (22/22) - 75,215 words - Beetlejuice (the musical) - no archive warnings apply, angst with a happy ending, very ooc charles for plot reasons
In negotiations, you always start out asking for more than what you want. That’s why Beetlejuice asked for Charles’ firstborn - he didn’t really want the man’s teenage daughter, just the bargaining chip. But apparently he overvalued the kid.
tumblr content tagged as 'firstborn au'
Little Black Dragon - Incomplete (3/?) - 13,700 words - Beetlejuice (the musical) - no archive warnings apply
Lydia, an until recently well cared for domestic dragon, has decided to go feral. Beetlejuice, a feral dragon himself, reckons it will be funny to watch her try. And Adam and Barbra Maitland are getting increasingly concerned about the two winged idiots that keep stealing from their birdfeeders.

Choir Incomplete - Incomplete (3/?) - 4,526 words - Beetlejuice (the musical)/Ride the Cyclone crossover - no archive warnings apply
After a news report on the Cyclone Accident, some ghost lore from Beetlejuice, and an impromptu overnight bike ride to Canada, Lydia has acquired an unidentified, headless housemate. tumblr content tagged as 'bj/rtc au'
In Case of Emergency, Break Glass - Incomplete (4/?) - 11,582 words - Beetlejuice (the musical) - graphic depictions of violence, please read the tags

But things change for the exploited medium with the capture of a somewhat annoying spirit named Lawrence.
tumblr content tagged as 'ghost jars au'
Netherborne - Incomplete (13/?) - 75,288 words - Beetlejuice (the musical) - graphic depictions of violence, please read the tags
Born in the Netherworld into the thrall of demons, Lydia outlasts her use when her mother dies, finding herself sold off to someone she once considered a friend. And Beetlejuice, meanwhile, has no idea what to do with this impulse-purchase of a mortal child.
tumblr content tagged as 'netherborne au'
Snake Oil - Incomplete Series (1st of 3 fics, 2/?) - 11,755 words - Beetlejuice (the musical) - major character death, graphic depictions of violence, please read the tags

tumblr content tagged as 'ten paces au'
Heritance of an Occultist - Incomplete (2/?) - 7,639 words - Beetlejuice (the musical) - No Archive Warnings Apply
Lydia is fairly sure that Charles is disturbed by her. Or at the least, she confuses him. But she’s been told that most people would be a little lost if they found the homunculus their late wife had been brewing in a bathtub months after her death, so maybe that’s fair.
tumblr content tagged as 'overcooked homunculus au'
Be Right Back - Incomplete (2/?) - 6,273 words - Nimona - No Archive Warnings Apply, please read the tags
It takes a long time to recover from a direct cannon blast to the chest, but Nimona has never been a patient creature. A rushed reformation more than a year after her death leads to Ballister and Ambrosius caring for her in secret while she comes to terms with how perceptions of her have changed, and the three try to figure out how and when to tell the kigdom she's back.
tumblr content tagged as 'be right back fic'
From the Back of a Blood Red Mare - Incomplete (1/?) - 1,889 words - Nimona - Graphic Depictions of Violence, please read the tags

Starkid Rewatch: Black Friday 🎁
Let me just preface by saying the intro is absolutely chilling
curt's sniggle is so fucking adorable
Tumblr media
They all are actually look at them
I don't know how to feel about the fact that I know the fucking wiggly jingle by heart
There they are - my emotional support paulkins
You're cutting into a heat of lettuce and oH shit a baby
I wanted a salad, but now I have a child
He will never invite "us" over again no labels my ass paul is her family
Tumblr media
Can we talk about the way she looks at him here though, it's so fucking soft 🥰
The crowd goes wild as a wild dylan saunders appears
BuT wE aRe InTiMaTe
Thank you for your service. I didn't do it for you.
Okay
Okay
Okay
OKAY
Soulmate behavior
I still can't get over the fact that we got the softest version of paulkins in black friday
dylan's microexpressions in 'what tim wants' i'm going to cry
Also can we talk about how pretty the set looks
dylan just radiates dad energy
You can try telling me tom didn't adopt lex and hannah after all this i just won't believe you
Tumblr media
HE HAS ARRIVED
Lexthan has my heart
They could have made ethan one of those cliche assholes whose only using lex and putting up with hannah but instead they made him soft and caring and the closest thing hannah has to an older brother/father figure to the point where he was ready to give his life to save them
So if ethan got the greyskull hat from a "powerful warrior" this technically means ethan has met or knows miss holloway
lex blowing kisses when ethan sings his part and ethan just bopping along/pretending to be paparazzi when lex does hers
We love a supportive couple
You're either in the smoke club or you're OUT
That better be fucking floss
linda monroe is a complete bitch BUT she can step on me please and thank you
That's called a bribe sir, and it's illegal...or it should be
I hope you don't get a wiggly, I hope you fucking die
'What do you say' is basically just a summary of shipping
Tumblr media
curt is me watching my ship interact
sherman and gary are just holding hands and skipping in the background
corey you dropped this king 👑
'Our doors are open' is honestly the best song in black friday
It is to black friday what show stopping number is to tgwdlm
The grandeur, the drama, THE HIPS
So gary and linda have definitely fucked right
Get ready for audits! Audits up your ears! Audits in your yinyang! Audits in your wazoo!
Higarygoldsteinattorneyatlaw
RIGHT IN THE SUBPEONA
Feast or famine is a fucking masterpiece
The chorus part is visually stunning
The music to show me your hands playing when james' cop enters
The first thing ethan asks curt's shopper is if he's okay, pure soul
They kicked his head
His last act was to protect hannah and his last thought was of lex im crying
GIVE ME THAT FUCKING DOLL I'M IN A HURRY
I don't know if you wanna wanna wanna wanna wanna wanna fuck with me miss monroe
The lighting here is incredible
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And they both look very hot
Do you see him? Do you see him? Do you see him? Do you see him? Do you see him?
YES I FUCKING SEE HIM!
jaime in a suit is making me gayer
morris rocking the wiggly like a baby
They all went completely fucking feral in this scene its incredible
curt REALLY went for it
Hope you don't mind that I let myself in. Into the oval office?
The audience clapping after everything mcnamara says is honestly a mood
The positioning of the people in the background in monsters and men is amazing. cross and linda - evil; frank, becky and roberts shopper - people who have both light and dark in them; and lex and hannah - good
jingle jangle jingle jangle jingle jangle jingle jangle jingle jangle jingle jangle RING A LING DING
Is it just me or does jon's character look like he's there to fucking murder a child
I mean jeff has a full on beard and even he looks more like a teenager than jon does here
Santa claus is going to highschool: a hallmark-esque Christmas movie starring a bunch of teenagers
Jon's "highschooler":
Tumblr media
'Take me back' makes me cry every time its so beautiful
Tumblr media
This is such a soft moment
a ReD tRiCyClE
So john and lee are definitely husbands im not taking no for an answer
I've met God, he had nothing nice to say about you
Tumblr media
She likes to be tall
'Do you want to play' is honestly such a creepy song
It gives me chills every time
[casually eats an apple in the middle of an evil speech]
Actually its not even an evil speech, cross may be evil but every word of his speech is fucking true
I can't be evil, I'm a status quo democrat
No john don't leave your husband
I'm honestly loving starkid's trend of calling america out on its bullshit
The fact that only the female sniggles have worn the antennae till now and then robert's sniggle is wearing one in 'made in america'
I'm thinking
Tumblr media
This was the most creative thing ever and I gasped when I saw it
owen and curt walked so cross and howie could run
lex singing "should I never have wanted" during black friday and paul saying "it doesn't matter what I want" in let it out
Two crucial songs that are character defining points
I don't want your half baked sympathy, when did it save those in need?
Angela's performance of black friday honestly makes me cry every time
[eagle screeching]
They're all into fortnight dude!
An update in songs that make me cry every time - if I fail you
Especially the part where the music switches to 'what tim wants' and he starts singing about jane
Is this some kind of a jOooke?
I've said it before and I'll say it again - he will wiggle has THE horniest choreography in the history of starkid, and that is including all of mamd
Specifically whatever gary and curt's shopper are doing
becky barnes is a fucking badass
I know gary leaves with linda because jon and lauren needed to be in the next scene as paul and emma, but this technically means that gary escaped
tom and becky immediately hugging the girls once they're out of danger i'm soft for them
Can we talk about how paul and emma were basically ready to adopt tim
Wear a watch
Everyone else is looking at their hands during what if tomorrow comes, but paulkins are looking at each other 🥺
Yes I am back on my paulkins bullshit
I never left
Also paul, despite his deep hate for musicals, sings in 'what if tomorrow comes'. Do with this information what you will
I know the most probable scenario is that they all died in the end but I refuse to believe it
