Voluntary gun buybacks are an incredibly simple way to get excess/unwanted guns off the streets. Every police department in the country should do this. The Sacramento Police Department said on Facebook that 134 people had dropped off firearms in exchange for $50 gas gift cards. The day's collections included at least one assault weapon, components of privately manufactured "ghost guns" and "multiple other illegally configured firearms," they said. While the gift cards appear to have been an incentive – especially with gas prices climbing across the country – officials said they weren't the only motivating factor. "Among other reasons, community members most commonly cited a lack of experience or knowledge with firearms, lack of knowledge of the legality of the firearms, or an inability to safely store the firearms as the main reasons for participating in the exchange," they wrote. Those 5-14 y/o living in rural areas are more likely to be hospitalized compared to those living in urban settings; this association reverses for teens 15-19 y/o in urban areas. When clinically appropriate, pediatricians should screen patients and families for access to guns and safe storage. The Biden administration has just announced a new White House Office of Gun Violence Prevention to help.

Life... liberty... and the pursuit of happiness

Isn't that what they promised us?!?

Isn't that what they steal daily... from little kids and elders...

And not only from these honored dead,

but from their families and friends and communities

plundered of happiness, liberty stolen and replaced with militarized police and a surveillance state - but don't even suggest background checks or red flags...

You wanna bear arms? Great, get yourself a musket, two extra flints,

and 24 cartridges because the framers for damn sure did not have any idea that we would have automatic meat grinder murder machines with high capacity magazines and bump stocks...

Bad theology and bad politics put guns in hands,

Fear and hate pull the triggers...

Scripture says, "live by the sword, die by the sword..."

We have been living by the gun for far too long and innocents just keep dying for our sins

Babies die at school and queers in bars and alleys for the patriarchy death cult

Old ones at the grocery store and middle age folks on the street and kids on the playground die for white nationalist pseudochristian bullshit

All of them dying for the unbridled lust for wealth and power...

The rest of us? Oh, We cry and scream and refuse to watch the news

We march and we petition... we vote?!?

I am tired, and oldish, and I am so done with this shit,

The thoughts and prayers of the powerful without any action toward change

are worse than nothing at all

And your right to bear arms is not more important than their right to be alive!

Life... liberty... and the pursuit of happiness

Inalienable perhaps, but easily stolen. Liberty still a mirage; life a glimmering hope; happiness, a cruel lie; America, a promise deferred...

Our liberation is collective, as is our struggle. It is in the interest of the ruling powers to divide us, and view our fellow marginalized community members as enemies. By pitting us against each other, the ruling class, that wretched machine for white supremacy misogyny, capitalism, and colonialism, continue their destruction of the planet and the genocide of our most vulnerable unabated.

Only when we are able to build power as a community, recognize that the material for one does not mean the loss and oppression of another, and dedicate ourselves to building a world where labor and productivity is not the rent we pay for basic human rights and dignity, are we able to work towards a world that lives up to the principles of equal rights and liberty.

I also love vintage sweaters, coffee, and lifting heavy things.
