How did cotton win over linen anyway?

In short, colonialism, slavery and the industrial revolution. In length:

Cotton doesn't grow in Europe so before the Modern Era, cotton was rare and used in small quantities for specific purposes (lining doublets for example). The thing with cotton is, that's it can be printed with dye very easily. The colors are bright and they don't fade easily. With wool and silk fabrics, which were the more traditional fabrics for outer wear in Europe (silk for upper classes of course), patterns usually needed to be embroidered or woven to the cloth to last, which was very expensive. Wool is extremely hard to print to anything detailed that would stay even with modern technology. Silk can be printed easily today with screen printing, but before late 18th century the technique wasn't known in western world (it was invented in China a millenium ago) and the available methods didn't yeld good results.

So when in the late 17th century European trading companies were establishing trading posts in India, a huge producer of cotton fabrics, suddenly cotton was much more available in Europe. Indian calico cotton, which was sturdy and cheap and was painted or printed with colorful and intricate floral patters, chintz, especially caught on and became very fashionable. The popular Orientalism of the time also contributed to it becoming fasionable, chintz was seen as "exotic" and therefore appealing.

Here's a typical calico jacket from late 18th century. The ones in European markets often had white background, but red background was also fairly common.

The problem with this was that this was not great for the business of the European fabric producers, especially silk producers in France and wool producers in England, who before were dominating the European textile market and didn't like that they now had competition. So European countries imposed trade restrictions for Indian cotton, England banning cotton almost fully in 1721. Since the introduction of Indian cottons, there had been attempts to recreate it in Europe with little success. They didn't have nearly advanced enough fabric printing and cotton weaving techniques to match the level of Indian calico. Cotton trade with India didn't end though. The European trading companies would export Indian cottons to West African market to fund the trans-Atlantic slave trade that was growing quickly. European cottons were also imported to Africa. At first they didn't have great demand as they were so lacking compared to Indian cotton, but by the mid 1700s quality of English cotton had improved enough to be competitive.

Inventions in industrial textile machinery, specifically spinning jenny in 1780s and water frame in 1770s, would finally give England the advantages they needed to conquer the cotton market. These inventions allowed producing very cheap but good quality cotton and fabric printing, which would finally produce decent imitations of Indian calico in large quantities. Around the same time in mid 1700s, The East Indian Company had taken over Bengal and soon following most of the Indian sub-continent, effectively putting it under British colonial rule (but with a corporate rule dystopian twist). So when industrialized English cotton took over the market, The East India Company would suppress Indian textile industry to utilize Indian raw cotton production for English textile industry and then import cotton textiles back to India. In 1750s India's exports were mainly fine cotton and silk, but during the next century Indian export would become mostly raw materials. They effectively de-industrialized India to industrialize England further.

India, most notably Bengal area, had been an international textile hub for millennia, producing the finest cottons and silks with extremely advance techniques. Loosing cotton textile industry devastated Indian local economies and eradicated many traditional textile craft skills. Perhaps the most glaring example is that of Dhaka muslin. Named after the city in Bengal it was produced in, it was extremely fine and thin cotton requiring very complicated and time consuming spinning process, painstakingly meticulous hand-weaving process and a very specific breed of cotton. It was basically transparent as seen depicted in this Mughal painting from early 17th century.

It was used by e.g. the ancient Greeks, Mughal emperors and, while the methods and it's production was systematically being destroyed by the British to squash competition, it became super fashionable in Europe. It was extremely expensive, even more so than silk, which is probably why it became so popular among the rich. In 1780s Marie Antoinette famously and scandalously wore chemise a la reine made from multiple layers of Dhaka muslin. In 1790s, when the empire silhouette took over, it became even more popular, continuing to the very early 1800s, till Dhaka muslin production fully collapsed and the knowledge and skill to produce it were lost. But earlier this year, after years lasting research to revive the Dhaka muslin funded by Bangladeshi government, they actually recreated it after finding the right right cotton plant and gathering spinners and weavers skilled in traditional craft to train with it. (It's super cool and I'm making a whole post about it (it has been in the making for months now) so I won't extend this post more.)

While the trans-Atlantic slave trade was partly funded by the cotton trade and industrial English cotton, the slave trade would also be used to bolster the emerging English cotton industry by forcing African slaves to work in the cotton plantations of Southern US. This produced even more (and cheaper (again slave labor)) raw material, which allowed the quick upward scaling of the cotton factories in Britain. Cotton was what really kicked off the industrial revolution, and it started in England, because they colonized their biggest competitor India and therefore were able to take hold of the whole cotton market and fund rapid industrialization.

Eventually the availability of cotton, increase in ready-made clothing and the luxurious reputation of cotton lead to cotton underwear replacing linen underwear (and eventually sheets) (the far superior option for the reasons I talked about here) in early Victorian Era. Before Victorian era underwear was very practical, just simple rectangles and triangles sewn together. It was just meant to protect the outer clothing and the skin, and it wasn't seen anyway, so why put the relatively scarce resources into making it pretty? Well, by the mid 1800s England was basically fully industrialized and resource were not scarce anymore. Middle class was increasing during the Victorian Era and, after the hard won battles of the workers movement, the conditions of workers was improving a bit. That combined with decrease in prices of clothing, most people were able to partake in fashion. This of course led to the upper classes finding new ways to separate themselves from lower classes. One of these things was getting fancy underwear. Fine cotton kept the fancy reputation it had gained first as an exotic new commodity in late 17th century and then in Regency Era as the extremely expensive fabric of queens and empresses. Cotton also is softer than linen, and therefore was seen as more luxurious against skin. So cotton shifts became the fancier shifts. At the same time cotton drawers were becoming common additional underwear for women.

It wouldn't stay as an upper class thing, because as said cotton was cheap and available. Ready-made clothing also helped spread the fancier cotton underwear, as then you could buy fairly cheaply pretty underwear and you didn't even have to put extra effort into it's decoration. At the same time cotton industry was massive and powerful and very much eager to promote cotton underwear as it would make a very steady and long lasting demand for cotton.

In conclusion, cotton has a dark and bloody history and it didn't become the standard underwear fabric for very good reasons.

This is such a niche complaint, but the lack of cohesive fasion in Acotar irks me so much. A) It's such an easy way to introduce worldbuilding!!! Like let's say that Spring's economy is mostly reliant on agriculture. Emphasize that a lot of the clothing is practical!! Work boots covered in mud, plain roughspun shirts, thick woolen trousers, little details that allude to bigger trends in the world!! B) I think it's a great way to visually depict the politics of the world. Quality of fabric and ornament tells us who has power, but she could've taken it a step further!! What colors does each court favor? What materials? What silhouettes? Does a given outfit show a character's allegiances the moment they enter a scene? C) The depictions in the books just feel so bland. Night Court dresses are sexy and black and that's about it and it's so fucking bland. What if Feyre incorporated tailored/structured bodices that mimicked armor as a visual indicator of her status as warrior? What if Rhys' attire incorporated Illryian embroidery despite the silhouette not being Illryian as a nod to his heritage? Little bits of visual detail!! That stress character and world building and plot instead of modern aesthetics!!!!

But the weird thing with the night court is that feyre was dressed like jasmine from aladdin when she first went - similar to amren's attire - but like nobody else dresses like that? They're in the north with really harsh winters and the clothing doesn't reflect that at all. I feel like the fandom has done more world building than the writer herself!

She is short tempered and holds deep grudges against others and gets quite vulgar at times.

She also holds an interest in fasion and clothing holding many different clothing designs throughout the session. The one above though is the main one shown.

Equios is a huge idiot in the nine session, despite his insane significance to the story and seemingly bombastic Antimateriel rifle he seems to always be the most useless to others getting killed and then revived to equirate while also getting preyed on by Jaulon.

Inexplicably Equios only exists in the alpha timeline, there are no alternate dreambubble versions of him nor can he exist in any alternate timelines. Whenever a split in the timeline appears he disappears from that plane of existence. When Equios is prompted about his alpha timeline “exclusivity” he will go on a long explanation of a bogus “ritual” that requires an insane amount of luck which would “summon” him into the world. Somehow though whenever he explains the ritual Equios will forget details and steps in it eventually creating an entirely new bogus ritual that requires equally insane steps to complete. Oddly enough though, his “ritual of theseus” somehow was prophetic in a way foreshadowing future events in the story. Perhaps if someone was able to have the luck to actually preform these rituals something special may happen in the session.

Zeliet is bombastic and flippant like Vriska with the intelligence and moral compass of Terezi, and both of their senses of drama added together. She's vriska-esque with enough restraint so that nobody else gets hurt. She's a bit reckless with herself and sometimes she will get herself hurt, though. She's usually pretty reasonable but her flair for the dramatic often comes out at the wrong times, like when she's fighting a powerful boss. Her fighting style is heavily inspired by fan dancing, with just as much waving the fans around elegantly as actually attacking. Similar to Terezi's cane, though, Zeliet's fans also serve as a sort of disability aid, so she can stay cool and not overheat.

Tanzen is the definition of utter absurdity. He picks up a range of odd hobbies, some of which change from week to week, because it humors him. Those who don’t know him consider him to be an utter mystery, but his friends know very well he keeps up his absurd and humorous acts in order to entertain them and himself. The one hobby he maintains religiously is caring for his cluckbeasts. He raises them not to provide food, but mostly to provide him with the companionship he lost after his lusus was killed and eaten by a bear. Neptun was  unique in many ways. Not only was she a Fushicablood, she was the natural-born heiress to the throne.

Due to Meenah and Feferi’s arrival on the meteors and Feferi’s ascension to the throne, she was “culled” by being hidden away- her hive was inside a large enclosure that resembled the cages post-scratch Feferi used  for her cuttlefish.

She like the other trolls entered the Nine Session using a copy of the prototype Sgrub.

Your WK college professor AU sounds interesting! What exactly does it entail? Like what kind of professor is Zach and how does he meet Violet in that AU? :) —CCFM

Thank you for the ask! I love it! Sorry it took me so long to get to 😭!

The Wild Kratts College Professor AU, in my personal opinion, is interesting, lol! This AU started last summer when @m0thisonfire and I started talking about a dream I had with Zach as a professor (it was ver, ummm, interesting, to the point I’m not sharing the details of it here, lol), and we (last summer) and I (this year) just kind of expanded on it from there. Moth did some art work for the AU that I will include below! All credits go to Moth, and I was given permission to include this wonderful piece! (Please check Moth’s other art/works out guys, they are all so good!)

In this AU Zach, and all the adult Wild Kratts Characters, are professors at the same college. The courses they teach are as follows:

Zach: Chemistry

Martin: Zoology

Chris: Biology

Aviva and Koki: Robotics/Engineering (I imagine they co-teach a few classes)

Jimmy Z: Aviation

Donita: Fasion/Design (Dabio is her Teacher’s Assistant)

Gourmand: Culinary Arts

Paisley: Civil Engineering (Rex is her Teacher’s Assistant)

Please see a more detailed explanation below the cut! ⚠️ Be warned there are mentions of intended harm against another, a student x professor relationship (nothing explicit/inappropriate is mentioned), and an age gap! ⚠️

All of the characters interact to some degree, with a lot of the same hero and villains dynamics playing out. The Wild Kratts crew is not technically formed, but all 5 are super close, and the villains similarly interact together and with the Wild Kratts crew as they normally do in the show (they are still somewhat rivals, if that makes sense).

The AU is centered around Zach who, much to his dismay, must work as a professor at a small college in the Southern United States to gain experience before his Alma Mater will allow him to return to their institution to become a robotics/engineering professor. Upon return with a few years of teaching experience, his Alma Mater will also fund his research and inventions, which is Zach’s only motivation to become a professor at all.

A key thing to note is that in the AU, Zach and Aviva have yet to make more than one of their trademark inventions. Zach has only made his invisibility cloak, and Aviva has made the miniaturizer. They both attended college together and were rivals in college, both determined to excel and beat each other as inventors upon graduation.

Financially there are very few ways either can go about this. Zach doesn’t have his company at the start of this AU due to poor financial decisions made by his father, which also leads to other financial troubles for Zach and his mother.

Aviva’s family is unable to support her financially because of health issues/medical bills that have beset her parents. Aviva’s family encourages her to teach instead of becoming an inventor right off the bat, then after she’s saved up enough money she can become an inventor full time.

So, Aviva looks into teaching, and she realizes she can do this by becoming a college professor at another university, and gaining experience at said institution, then her Alma Matar will then hire her full time and fund her research.

Zach learns of her plan, and he decides to copy it, the only problem is he didn’t comprehend the “previous experience” part. This results in him having to take the first available job he can find at another university.

While Aviva becomes a robotics/engineering professor…Zach’s stuck between the choice of biology or chemistry. So, having nearly failed biology in both high school and college (the dissections he refused to do tanked his grade) he opted for chemistry.

Zach’s not excited about being a chemistry professor, but his stubbornness outweighs his ability to quit. So, with only a couple days to spare before the semester begins Zach arrives at the institution he’ll teach at and has to scramble to write lessons plans, pick course material, and get settled into his office and apartment.

How does Zach meet Violet? Wellll, in the bookstore. Zach goes in to see which materials he’ll need for his classes, and Violet’s looking through the books…to…get…them…for…her…classes. And since Zach hasn’t picked out any books for his classes…she “can’t find the materials for Professor Varmitech’s class.”

So…she’s his student! (Hides behind a rock, don’t hate me, this AU’s helping me heal from my traumatic college experience, okay 😭). But everything is all consensual and legal between them! Violet is 18 and Zach’s 23 (pushing 24), the same gap present in my Wild Violet AU.

In this first meeting, Zach and Violet bond over the fact that they want the best course material possible for his classes, so Zach offers her extra credit points if she’ll help him pick the books out. Violet agrees to help, but refuses to accept the extra credit, and they spend a few hours together talking about chemistry and textbooks.

Zach’s initially aggravated by her chipper attitude, but once he realizes who she is (one of his students with disabilities and trauma) and her passion for learning, he starts to…tolerate her, lol.

Violet starts out as a science major, and she takes classes with Zach, Martin, and Chris before she changes her major to elementary education (which happens with Zach’s help because he also happens to be her academic adviser).

Since Zach, Martin, and Chris are all in the science department, they have offices right beside each other, and Zach’s in the middle of the “wild rats.” Violet takes advantage of their office hours for extra academic help, and it’s not uncommon to find her bouncing from office to office after or between her classes. She develops strong platonic relationships with all three of them.

Zach and Violet’s relationship status, however, starts to change when Zach, Chris, and Martin happen upon two students trying to harm Violet one evening, and Zach goes wild, no pun intended. After this Zach and Violet become much closer, her revealing the secrets of her past to him and he to her, and they start to fall for each other and eventually enter a romantic relationship.

I think that’s all I’ll share for now because it’s getting pretty long, lol, but thank you so much for this ask! I’ve been wanting to get some of these ideas out and this was such a wonderful opportunity!

Same disclaimer as last time!! this is more like fitting them into a feral cat design but in oc fasion, these are in no way trying to be realistic cat designs!!! with that out of the way!! i present to you, team sol! (not an actual team id give them i think. but i was suggested to design marine next and i went why not silver and blaze too lmao) 

like in the team dark, these would ALSO be their height differences in design too, and each had their own little bits to why i designed them how i did! i tried to keep aspects from their original designs in some places, like blazes gloves translated to just being actual fur bits on her, and marines marking scarf supposed to represent her outfit in a simple fasion! i think the only one i had a breed of cat in mind was with silver being mixed with SOME sort of oriental shorthair and having a bit of it in them! going into detail again with each indiviual design too! and picking apart my thoughts for em a bit below it!  (these are mixes of personal designs and original designs) 

marine!!  -kept some of her original species traits in the similarity with the tail and ears (slightly) and some markings (also slightly)  -scarf/bandana based off the green in her outfit!! also it complements wonderfully with the orange me thinks  -some of the markings vaguely are supposed to look like waves or water! to vague at her abilities in canon and also just. sol as a whole -something made me look at marine and say she’d be a very round shaped cat, i think thats the only way i can explain that lmao

silver!!  -long and lanky, personal design is just supposed to be skinny and scrawny, tried to get that across- if silvers fluffiness wasnt there it’d probably be more obvious  -scars on legs are meant to vague the markings on their hands and wrists in the original design, and also the idea that theres just hidden markings that only show up when using abilities- so vagues that idea too in their shape  -a mix of my 06 designs markings and fur shape while also having my personal designs colors and patterns too!  -the neck fur trails off like the 06 chest fur does on silver  -different colored eyes to reference both designs for silver, different eye colors n what not

blaze!! -while keeping it slightly grounded, i still wanted her to be purple... so made her a silver tabby before tinting it purple, made a more saturated version too to a closer to her in game closers (vaguely)  -fur on front legs representing her gloves!!! as well as the fur on her back legs representing her shoes fur too.  -honestly, this design takes ALOT more from personal design than anything, but the tabby will make sense later on in another design i plan to do whenever they are requested lmao

This year we did a gift exchange among friends and I drew one of the players in my Pathfinder campaign and decided to draw a scene from his character’s backstory. His character (Gardagan, on the left) was traveling with his lover Belaveran when they were attacked on the road. In a last ditch effort she managed to teleport him away before dying herself.

This is by far the most detailed drawing I’ve ever done and the first time I’ve drawn a background! I’m also very proud of the colour gradient. I wanted Belaveraon to be almost black-and-white since she’s as good as dead, while everything around Gardagan is vibrant since he keeps on living. As always, click for details. Also I probably didn't watch that much queer stuff this week so sorry? I mean I had to slow down a little whores. most of this stuff is stuck behind a paywall. (pssst I have a ko-fi if you wanna help a whore out).

The Legend of Lylah Clare (1968) dir. Robert Aldrich

So this is one of those movies that had a queer element and then were also just very poorly recieved for completly unrelated reasons, (think Sylvia Scarlett or Glen or Glenda). This film is about 80% less gay then that. On one hand you have this very meta type of patisches to it its a lot of elements from things like Rebecca and Sunset Boulivard.

You basically have this young actress who has this preternaturally ability to imitate Lylah Clare a golden age star who died in a spectacular fasion and she bascially falls into the wild child/Bisexual Vamp role. If you remember me discussing Lola from Pandoras Box then you have a sense of what I'm talking about.

TBH it is very campy and fun but the reason why this is on the list is that one of the characters is a lesbian and she was fucking Lola Rebecca, *checks notes*, sorry Lylah Clare.

Muchachas de Uniforme (1951) dir. Alfredo B. Crevenna

so this is a mexican remake of the classic and while there are some aspects I really like about it (the expressionist type architecture, the costume design), it tones down a lot of the queerness of the original.

I will say that this

1. is a lot darker and if you know how the original ends then know that they go for the bummer ending. (bury your gays)

2. I watched this on youtube and there were no English Subs so I had to use the auto-translate function which meant I only got the barest bones concept of the dialogue. its buggy, spanish is a fast spoken language and also if I understood spanish the dialogue would probably be really pretty. So understand there is a language barrier for me here.

Madchen in Uniform (1958) dir. Géza von Radványi

This one is a lot more faithful to the original but they also butcher the bedroom kiss scene. However they do make that up with this kiss later on when they extend the play plot point.

I will say that I do like aspects of this film, i like there take on it but the original madchen in uniform is far superior to both of the remakes.

and thats not to say that the remakes are bad films they have a great aestetic, they add little details the original does but its something about the original that just sings in a way these ones dont

Everything Else I watched this week and a half

as you can tell I watched Infinity Pool, It was great. Horror Autuers are like lets shit on rich people and I'm all for it. Its giving sci-fi taking to its psycological horror extremes and what happens when you give in negative nihilism.

Also watched 2017 B&B, its a gay thriller and its pretty good if a bit triggering.

I finished the rest of the Hammer House of Horror and umm what else...

So I watched Bi-coastal, one of the Catalina Bisexual Features they did in the 70s directed by Tom DeSimone, (or as he went by then Lance Brookes). The men in it are definetly hollywood twink and not the sexy Gage Men, but despite that Bi-Coastal was V V hot. and honestly very bi positive for the time.

I would have expected Getway Car to be above Dogs and Beta Club but y'all really should listen to all these songs/bands.

Metric and Kings of Leon are two of the best bands I've ever heard, with possibly the most impressive discographies I've ever had the privilege of listening to. Each album by each band is no lower than a strong 7, they each have just incredibly consistent grooves and tones, always finding ways to add more, or rework the sounds they usually stick with.

Metric has always loved their synths, and with every album they release you can just hear them come into themselves more and more as they experiment with the noises and lyrics they make. An absolutely amazing and beautiful and stunning blend of pop and rock. The cybernetic sounds they blast always catch me in their electrifying nets, getting me stuck in all the subtle little additions they add, all the little details that bring the songs up to new levels. And the sheer lyricism of Emily Hanes, MMMMPPH! She's a huge inspiration to my own music, and Art Of Doubt is possibly my favourite album ever

Kings Of Leon have been a favourite for probably just as long as metric. I just can never get enough of the twang they seem to have absolute mastery over. Each project of theirs being so lovingly crafted and pieced together, as if they live through the music they make. I get lost in their albums so often, especially the album Mechanical Bull. It's just so easy to get lost in the largness of the sound they always seem to perfectly get out

Jarv has more passion in his music than almost any other rapper I've listend to in recent memories. His flows are just peak, his song Escargot is a perfect example of his ability to put words together and a wonderful display of how fucking fast that boys tongue can move. He's got groove, he's got heavy hittings, he's got lyricism up the wazoo, seriously, some of the most cleaver and pleasing rhyme schemes I've ever heard, Eminem WISHES he had the immaculate flow that Jarv possess.

Linkin Park. Do they even need a description? One of the most iconic rock bands, just, ever! They always put their whole pussies into what they made. Every word, every note, it was so intrinsicly THEM. Unabashedly unashamed of the "cringness" of they lyrics, just letting themselves be as they are and saying to the world "this is me. Now watch." In Pieces is one of my favourite songs of all time, and while I'm less a fan of the newer stuff, Linkin Park will always be top dog. Rest In Wonderful Noise, Chester Bennington

Mosie is phenomenal. This guy understands pop in ways that nobody in recent years has been able to get. He beautifully blends pop bases with some more hip hop feels and motifs, blending the two genras together in a fasion I just, quite frankly, haven't heard a single group or person pull off since Taylor Swift sold the fuck out. He bops, he hops, his voice is so clearly full of passion for the craft that it makes it so easy to get into the mood of each song. He's perfectly able to engross the listener, hooking them with the immaculate beats and passionate lyrics.
