February Ficlet Challenge - Day 2
Prompt: Forgotten what we were fighting about Pairing: Jonathan/Steve Words: 320
“Will you just listen to me?” Jonathan cried, grabbing Steve’s arm and stopping him halfway through the front yard to where his car was parked on the street. “I don’t know what you want me to do.”
“I want you to fucking apologize,” Steve replied, turning and stepping close to Jonathan, “like I’ve been asking for the past week. Why is it so hard for you to admit when you’re wrong?”
“I don’t even know what I’m wrong about, Steve!” Jonathan put his hands on his hips. “You won’t talk to me and I don’t know what I did! I can’t read your mind, you know!”
“You shouldn’t have to read my mind to know that I never wanted…” Steve stopped, pulling his eyebrows together and frowning. “I can’t believe you…” He stopped again, his eyes flicking back and forth like he was searching for something.
“Oh my god,” Jonathan said with a disbelieving chuckle. “You can’t even remember why you’re mad at me, can you?”
“I’ll remember!” Steve paused for another tense moment before sighing, putting his hand to his forehead. “I can’t remember. I’ve been mad at you for like three fucking days, and I can’t even remember why! Jesus Christ!”
Jonathan stepped closer to him, cupping Steve’s elbow in his hand. “Look. If you ever remember, just let me know, alright? But I don’t want us to live like this, always arguing. It sucks!”
“It does suck.” Steve drew Jonathan closer. “I swear, I did have a good reason for being mad at you.”
“Maybe we can just move past it? Spend a good evening together before I have to leave in the morning?” He gave Steve a smile he hoped was soft and inviting enough to entice him back into the house.
Steve returned the smile and said, “Yeah, we could do that.” He took Jonathan’s hand and led him back toward the house. “Come on.”

The Shades of Pemberley
I’m a bit behind on the February Ficlet Challenge prompts. Here’s Day 17, “skinny dipping”...  This is crack.
Fitzwilliam Darcy was having a difficult week. If he were fully honest with himself, it had been several months of struggle, ever since Miss Elizabeth Bennett had so rudely rejected his proposal of marriage. After much soul searching, he was trying to reform himself.  She had told him many things about himself that were, in fact, quite true, and not flattering about his own behavior.
He had been in London for some time, but he decided to take care of some business back at Pemberley before his friends joined him the next day.
It was a hot summer day, and the journey had been rather grueling.  As he crossed the border of his estate, he noticed the slightly secluded pond, which looked very inviting.  He handed his horse over to a waiting groom, and walked back toward the pond. Finding a grove of trees bordering the water, he stripped off all of his clothes, and dove into the water, just like he had as a boy.
The water was near freezing, despite being the middle of summer. He came up for air, too cold to even scream.  His mind was certainly cleared, that much was certain.
“What are you doing here?” came a woman’s voice from across the pond.
Darcy looked over and saw a blond woman treading water, not, as far as he could tell, wearing any clothing. He averted his eyes as she swam to the side and stepped out, though somehow she was already fully clothed in a sparkling, bejeweled dress as soon as he looked up.
“This is my property,” Darcy said, once he had his senses back.
“The housekeeper told us that the owner was in London and would not be back until tomorrow,” the woman told him.
“I decided to return early,” Darcy explained.
“Well, thankfully we seem to be unobs-”
“Elsa? There you are!” a red-haired young woman exclaimed coming over the rise in the terrain. “Wait, what? Who’s this?”
“Anna? I thought you were taking a tour of the house with that other family!”
“Miss Bennett wished to take a walk around the grounds… Where is she? Oh!  There you are!”
“Mr. Darcy?” Miss Elizabeth Bennett exclaimed.
“Miss Bennet!” Mr. Darcy cried out, still submerged in the water.
“It was all a simple misunderstanding,” Elsa said. “Why don’t we leave- what did you say your name was?”
“Darcy,” he told them.
She nodded, continuing, “why don’t we leave Mr. Darcy to make himself decent, and then we can forget this little incident.”
“What is going on here?” an all too familiar voice interrupted.
“Lady Catherine? What are you doing here?” Elizabeth Bennet exclaimed.
“Fitzwilliam, what are you doing in there?”
“Fitzwilliam?” the young red-head could be heard giggling.
“Aunt, I-” he began.
“Madame,” Elsa interrupted, “I assure you nothing untoward happened here, and I apologize for trespassing in your nephew’s pond.”
“Excuse me?” Lady Catherine intoned. “Your objections ring hollow. It is obvious that you are trying to entrap my nephew into an advantageous marriage for yourself.”
Elsa gave a slight chuckle, and her sister burst out laughing.
“Madame, I don’t even know your name,” Elsa said.
“I am Lady Catherine de Bourgh.  Who are you? You certainly are a presumptuous one!”
“I am Queen Elsa of Arendelle,” the blond stated.
“Arendelle?” Lady Catherine asked.
“They usually call it Norway around here,” Anna explained.
“Oh!” Lady Catherine exclaimed. “I’m sorry, Your Majesty, but there’s no other solution. My nephew has clearly compromised you, and you will need to get married as soon as possible.”
“But-” Elsa began.
“No, I’m very sorry for his behavior, but there’s obviously no other solution.”
Darcy sighed.  His greatest fear had come to pass. He had always been thankful that his cousin Anne never had the constitution to be pushed into compromising situations, but he knew his luck would only last so long.
“May I get dressed, at least?” Darcy sighed.
“Of course, we’ll leave and give you some privacy,” Elsa replied.
As they were leaving, he heard the red-head speaking to his bride-to-be.
“So, Elsa, if you’re marrying some random English gentry, maybe when we get back, I could-”
“You want to marry that ice harvester, Anna?” Elsa asked.
“Well?” Anna replied.
“Sure, why not?”

strange first meeting
for day 1 of the february ficlet challenge!
fandom: nu: carnival
characters: kuya & quincy
rating: teen & up
Quincy had never seen a purple fox before.
The Wood Territory had some unusual wildlife, sure, but he’d definitely remember something like that. It was a rather young pup, a pretty lilac shade that contrasted nicely with the trees; not great for camouflage in any season, but foxes were quite adept at evading their prey regardless.
Evidently, man-made traps were another story.
The fox squirmed uselessly in the air, hung from a tree branch by rope wrapped around its ankle. Quincy was surprised it wasn’t making any noise, but then again… it probably didn’t want to be detected. It surely wouldn’t react well to Quincy getting close, but he didn’t want to just leave the poor thing there, so he stepped in to help.
As soon as Quincy was within range, the fox swiped at him, using all three of its available limbs to try to push him away. Quincy didn’t pay it much mind— he’d seen much worse than a few scratches in his day— and focused instead on cutting through the rope. The material was thick, so it took a bit longer than he would have liked. But as soon as the fox hit the ground, it darted away, not even remotely deterred by a slight limp from the remaining rope tied around its leg.
Quincy sighed and pocketed his knife. He had to get better at scaring off the poachers that wandered into the woods.

February Ficlet Challenge 2023
Hey everyone! It’s been quite a year! Last year we had a record number of fics submitted to the collection, and your organizers are overwhelmed and delighted in equal measure. Evidently having two prompts to choose from is inspiring!
So this year, we’re doing that again. Chinese New Year is on January 22nd this year, and it will be the year of the Water Rabbit - so one of the two prompts for each day of the FFC will have something to do with either water or rabbits!
Other than that, FFC 2023 is going to work pretty much like it has in previous years. The February Ficlet Challenge is a direct result of the October Ficlet Challenge that imaginary_golux and Turn_of_the_Sonic_Screw did in 2017. The basic idea is to write a ficlet every single day for a month, using a new combination of prompt and pairing every day. Anyone is welcome to contribute; here's how to join the fun:
1) Create a list of pairings you are willing to write. (Ideally, pick 28 - one for each day of the month!) 2) Check the February Ficlet Challenge tumblr every morning for today's prompt, posted at 12:01 am West Coast time. 3) Write a ficlet of at least 200 words within 24 hours of checking the prompt, using the prompt and the pairing from your list. (This one’s a pretty loose rule - we don’t close the collection until much later in the year, so you can keep adding to it even after February is over!) 4) Post your ficlet to this collection!
One month. Twenty-eight prompts. Twenty-eight pairings. One ficlet a day. Write Fast.

February Ficlet Challenge - Day 1
Prompt: "Wave" Pairing: Steve/Eddie Wordcount: 556
As Steve was crossing the Indiana Tech campus, he saw someone waving at him. The guy had long, curly black hair and was wearing a leather jacket in early September, still 80-degree weather. Steve thought he maybe looked familiar. Yeah, yeah. He was from Hawkins, too. Not that it was all that unusual. A lot of the kids from Hawkins who didn’t get into state school had enrolled here at Tech. Figuring he might as well go give the guy a friendly hello, at least, Steve made a detour and headed toward him.
Steve had almost reached the point where he would start talking, when the guy looked past him and said, “You’re late, Gareth!”
Mortified, Steve looked over his shoulder and saw another kid with puffy, metalhead hair right behind him.
Steve swerved and went around the black-haired guy as Gareth said, “Give me a break, Eddie! You know I’ve got class all the way the hell across campus!”
It would’ve been just a little thing—a moment of embarrassment, quickly forgotten—but Steve kept seeing “Eddie” everywhere. He passed Steve in the hall of the History building between classes. He sat in the far back corner of Steve’s composition class. Hell, he even brought his math homework to the same tutor in the library just after Steve finished working with her every Tuesday.
He was everywhere!
And then one day, he stopped Steve in the hallway of the history building. “Hey, you’re Steve Harrington, right?”
“Uh, yeah.” He gestured to Eddie, saying, “Hawkins high?”
“Flunked out, actually,” Eddie said with a laugh. “My aunt and uncle helped me get my GED and a scholarship to this place.” He gave Steve his hand, clasping his and shaking it. “Apparently my friend Gareth knows your friend Dustin,” he let go, “and Dustin wants us to invite you to the party we’re having this Saturday. I told them there was no way King Steve would want to come to some lame party with a bunch of D&D freaks, but I promised I would ask.”
Though Steve was friendly with some of the people he’d met here at Tech, he wouldn’t say he was friends with any of them either. Not really. Which meant he was totally free on Saturday. “King Steve is something I’m trying to leave back in high school where he belongs. I’ll come to the party. Sure. Where is it?”
“Here,” Eddie said, grabbing Steve’s hand. With his other hand, he took a pen out of his pocket, pulled the cap off with his teeth, and wrote an address on the back of Steve’s hand. “Party starts at eight. Hope I’ll see you there.
The smile he gave Steve was so warm that Steve couldn’t help but smile back. “Y-yeah, okay. I’ll see you there.” As Steve walked away, he wondered why his heart was beating so hard and why the back of his neck felt so hot. It was just an invite to a party. It didn’t have to—
Steve looked back and caught Eddie watching him leave. Steve raised a hand, giving Eddie a wave, which he returned before turning and hurrying away. Chuckling to himself, Steve continued to his class and tried not to think too much about what the hell he was going to wear to a metal head’s party.

A Happy Ending
The day 14 prompt I chose was “merfolk” and I decided to go with some near-canon agduna for this...
“What are you reading, Your Majesty?” Iduna asked as she approached Agnarr in the courtyard.
“Some new Danish author,” he replied.
Iduna looked at the cover.
“Mermaids?”
Agnarr nodded and kept reading.
Iduna sat down in the grass nearby, not wanting to interrupt his reading, but watched him as he read.  It was a short book, and he finished the book fairly quickly.
“Well, that was depressing,” he sighed, closing the book.
“What do you mean?” Iduna asked.
“It’s not a long book, you could read it yourself,” he suggested, handing the book over to her.
She took it, turning it around and examining it. “Thank you,” she said quietly.
Agnarr looked at her expectantly. “So, are you going to read it?”
“Right now?” she asked.
“Of course!” he exclaimed. “If you want to talk about it, you should read it.”
“What are you going to do right now?”
“I’m still thinking about the story.”
“Oh,” she said, opening up the book. He was still sitting in the same spot, staring off into the distance.
The story seemed simple enough.  There was a mermaid who admired a human, and she made a deal with a sea witch so that she could meet him. As Iduna read on, she kept expecting something to happen, or someone to come in and turn things around. But it never happened.  She got to the end, and after a pause, closed the book.
“That’s it?” she asked.
Agnarr was still sitting in the same spot. He gave a nod.
“It is supposed to be a happy ending, you know,” he said a moment later.
“Happy? How?”
“She gets a soul, after all.”
“Why wouldn’t she have one in the first place?  That’s absurd!”
“I’d have to ask the bishop,” Agnarr shrugged. “I don’t know.”
“Well, I don’t know, either, but it reads more like a tragedy to me, and I don’t think I like tragedies. Do you have anything that’s got an actual happy ending?”
“Let’s go to the library!” Agnarr suggested.
He hopped up, and reached for Iduna’s hand. She smiled and followed.
