Dungeons & Dragons: Call Backs to Iconic Art PART 2
In 1989 the 2nd Edition of Advanced Dungeons & Dragons was released. Later in 1995, to mark TSR’s 20th anniversary, the 2nd edition was re-released with further rules modifications and addons. More notably to me, this set of books – The Players Handbook, The Dungeons Masters Guide, and the Monster Manual - were given the full colour treatment in art and layout.
Tumblr media
However, aside from the new look, there were several art pieces that had the special distinction of being “call backs” to iconic 1st edition images. In some cases, these illustrations either further extrapolated the inferred narrative of the original 1st edition image, or were simply a “retelling” of the image itself.  Although some are more successful than others, it was a pretty cool attempt at pulling from that past while still keeping things fresh and new.
This is Part 2 of 3. The original illustration is presented first (a B&W illustration, with the exception of the first illustration below, the cover to the 1st edition Player's Handbook) with the 2nd edition re-release following it.

This illustration of Kragor NeMoren went through many iterations on its way to the final version in our latest re-release of NeMoren's Vault: 20th Anniversary Edition. In fact, this "portrait" of Kragor has been included in all the editions of NeMoren's Vault, introducing the DM to the adventure's namesake. This was a year ago, when the idea of a 20th Edition of NMV was still in the "is this doable?" stage and the relaunch of what is now Platinum Dragon Productions.
Obviously, a lot has happened since then.
What is worth pointing out is the background is actually an homage to the back cover illustration of the classic B1: In Search of the Unknown. In a couple of the newer illustrations for the 20th Edition I went on to include an OSR Easter egg or two for veteran players to ponder.

Happy Holidays from Platinum Dragon Productions! We thank you for all the support and kind words since our "comeback" in 2020 and of course, we're looking forward to a more hopeful future in 2021. Love and respect to all our friends and family, and to our extended gaming family! https://buff.ly/3p9Zj7o And now...for what has become a FDP/PDP holiday tradition of sorts...a message from our man, Boba Fett, because Star Wars.

Every Christmas Eve my folks would leave a present at the end of our beds once we fell asleep. Given the overwhelming anticipation of those early Christmas mornings, once we would wake we could rarely fall back to sleep. Being able to open a single present immediately, and thus occupy us sufficiently as to give our parents a fighting chance to sleep, worked like a charm.
One particular Christmas morning that present happened to be a Top Secret adventure called Lady in Distress. The adventure turned out to be awesome and at the same time, represented a fair amount of nostalgia for me.
So much so that many years later I wrote a review of the adventure for the Fiery Dragon Website - in part to also promote James' podcast - Nerd Tangent. It should also be said that James and I have been binging a ton of James Bond movies on Crave here in Toronto, which has us, well, craving to play an espionage style game when the time comes.
In the spirit of our 20th anniversary at Platinum Dragon here's that review...Merry Christmas to all...and to all a good night...
