Being a game collector is so weird bc you tell your friends "hey have you seen this thing, it's one of my favorite things ever and if you want to try it you either have to hang out at my place for a week or emulate it which is always morally correct but there's like a 10% chance it won't play exactly right or buy it secondhand on ebay for $200 more than I did when I found it decaying on a gamestop shelf 15 years ago and you can only play it on the PS2 because that disc doesn't work on anything modern if it still even works at all"
but with movies it's like "hey have you seen Space Jam? It's an hour and a half, I've got it on DVD or we can rent it on five different streaming sites for like $5"

The Retro Horror Games Iceberg Chart, Ver. 2.0
Tumblr media
Please read my notes below for more context. I always take asks about retro horror games, as well. I have at least some experience with most of these. This chart can be used in personal projects or YouTube videos, but please ask me first and do not remove my credits. Thank you.
This is a massive, updated version of an iceberg chart I made. It's intended as a guide for a mostly Western audience (and preservationists) to discover more of these games, not as a 100% accurate ranking. So don't worry about my placements too much, just check out the games that sound interesting to you.
NOTES: -Games on lower tiers like Aoi Shiro or Mizzurna Falls have notable fanbases, but were placed there because, since they did not get official ports outside of their home country, they will not be as well-known or can be harder to find physical copies of.
-PC and console games only. Focus is on the 90s and 2000s because that's more my area of expertise.
-I've included a couple of non-horror games like Chulip, Conker's Bad Fur Day and Majora's Mask due to their horror aesthetics or close ties to the genre. As a collector, I always feel it's better to include more rather than less, and these games seem at home here.

What's your favorite game based solely on the package? I mean for you what's a game with a really cool box?
I've gotta go with Havoc, with a package designed by Hock Wah Yeo. It's designed to look like a post-apocalyptic computer monitor covered in radioactive debris, and it was made with egg carton material. An absolutely stunning package that makes the game more exciting. My copy is slightly dirty, which just fits the design and adds even more character and history to it.
Tumblr media
For a more traditional box design, I also love this version of H.E.D.Z. with a holographic cover and an explosion chunk taken out of the front cover.

Regarding the recent news of some developers deleting their Unity games in response to the owners of the game engine wanting to charge Devs per every install, does anyone have a list of Unity games that are scheduled for deletion (for example, Cult of the Lamb)? I would like to have a look and see if there's any titles I want to secure a copy of before they get removed (preferably DRM Free ones) Edit: Gonna start a list to help folks who find this post. I recommend getting DRM free versions when possible! You can look at each games page on the pc gaming wiki to find out more about that. The Games: - Cult of the lamb
Rain world
Among us? (They might be changing game engines, I don't know about deletion)

January 12th 2024 - GUYS I WENT OUT TO THE SHOPPING CENTRE AND DID A SMALL SPENDING SPREE LOOK AT THIS I found a copy of Rare Replay for just £3! And I got an enormous Eevee plush! It’s huge and I love it like my own child.
But most amazingly, there was a secondhand tech store that had a surprising retro game library - I left with 2-in-1 Super Mario Bros and Duck Hunt for the NES and Metroid II and Pokémon Blue for the GameBoy. I have a GBA I can play the GameBoy games on, but the NES cartridge is purely for collectability. Someday I’ll buy recreation cases for these games, too, so they can fit snuggly in my mini-library!

tl/dr trying to collect GameInformer info
I am aware this is nothing like what I normally post.
I collect for Persona, and thru that, I also collect GameInformers that mention it. I have realized while collecting that no one really archives these, and that has put a sort of wrench in my quest as I have no way to tell which magazines actually mention the series, besides when I sit in my local secondhand stores and thumb thru the pages of the random issues there.
so I have created a spreadsheet on Google sheets that collects all archived information (internet archives, archives of indexes they retromag, anything) so I can tell which I need to look for. but I have every magazine ever made at least listed there, with a lot of blank spaces for info. I wanted to make this helpful for people who aren't just collecting for Persona, but for GameInformer in general, especially since it is said they will soon cease printing their magazines entirely (which is so upsetting.) I attached the view/comment link here for all of you if you would like to use it, or if you would like to help me find more info on my quest for information! I'm mostly looking for the indexes of games mentioned in each issue.

Kingdom Hearts 3D
It’s been a while since I have been able to visit the second hand game store. Boy am I glad I popped in today. Look what they had:
Tumblr media
I already have the remaster of this game, but I really wanted to play it in its original form and see what it would have been like to play when it first came out. It was also complete with booklets and AR cards.
Tumblr media
Look how much thought they put into the packaging as well. It’s so adorable.
Tumblr media
Can’t wait to start collecting dream eaters again and experience this game on original hardware.
I only have to find a copy of Re:Coded now hehe.

My package from Japan arrived. I now own all the individual Ace Attorney games physically! (Not pictured is the GAA collection because I didn't wanna get it out lol)
Tumblr media
The only thing I'm missing is the HD trilogy, which I have on backorder with the Apollo trilogy, so those two will ship together once the latter is released.
I guess there's also the GBA versions of the first 3 games, but those are a low priority for me lmao.

Collection of misc. official art from Magic Pengel (Doodle Kingdom) and some from its sequel Graffiti Kingdom. This is an ambitious, niche little game that I really like, especially its soundtrack. The idea of being able to draw and play as your own 3D characters was incredible for 2002.
Members of Studio Ghibli worked on this game, which I didn't realize at first but made sense. It reminded me immediately of Spirited Away with the marketplace hub.

at last heres a pic of the haul from Sundays game market visit!! it was a lot of fun if very overcrowded lol.
Tumblr media
wouldve probably bought more of the expensive stuff if i had more money atm but im very happy with the deals i got. stuff like Samba de Amigo, SEGA Superstars Tennis, Guitar Hero and M&S Olympics were all VERY cheap (like $5 or less). also not pictured is dead rising chop til you drop on wii which was also very cheap. I'm super super excited to finally own OutRun 2 on Xbox as well, its one of the few games I actually got to play for the first time in an arcade and I've dreamt of having an about-as-pretty version of it at home ever since. Coast2Coast wasnt doing it for me!!!
Tumblr media
Mario&Sonic at the Olympic Games in particular was extremely funny bc it has signs of Four different pricetags. the red one by Mario started at $45, and then it went to $10 before the $4 i bought it for. (idk where the 4th pricetag fits into this)
Tumblr media
ANYWAY the big catch here for me was
♡☆Magical Starsign☆♡
I've been looking for this game for a whiiile and I'm so glad I found it both in very good condition and for just a little over $20!!!! This is a beautiful pixelart JRPG by the devs who codeveloped Mother 3 along with artists from the Mana series on SNES/PS1. VERY excited to play this one hehe >:3
oh also the GBA game is a bootleg replica of Sims 2 Bustin Out. it was 3 dolar.

hi Phil! i also collect old games (Maxis in particular funny enough), and as a fellow collector i have to ask - is there a holy grail game you've been trying to get your hands on that you haven't managed to yet?
I'll give you a Maxis-specific answer! One of my favorite weird Maxis quirks is that in 1996, for a promotional run called Sim Week, Maxis published special editions of all four of their Sim games that year that came with bonus "gifts," depending on the audience for the game. So they came with...
SimCopter: a pair of aviators
SimGolf: branded golf balls
SimPark: a nature watch
SimTunes: a SimTunes-branded harmonica (!)
These have been my holy grail for years, and I managed to get SimGolf and SimCopter... and then managed to locate the other ones earlier this year!!! A former Maxis employee had them, and they're all going to VGHF (and maybe eventually the Strong Museum of Play).
