052-053 - Meowth Line
So today I present some more silver shinies. I love 'em, you, er, probably at least tolerate them, here's some more. Bonus Alolan forms, which are Meowth night mode. And then there's Galarian Meowth.
I can't fix Galarian Meowth.

Pokemon: Shiny vs. Default, 0052-0053
Okay, we got a long one today, as we cover Meowth and one of its evolved forms, including Alolan, Galarian, and G-Max forms.
Meowth is one of those Pokemon that I like basically because of the anime. Game-wise it’s not really done much since Persian lost auto-crit Slash, but the anime one is iconic and we love that here.
We’ll start with the original, Kantonian Meowth.
Tumblr media
And like a lot of other Pokemon in the “Iconic Mascot” category, Meowth’s shiny is kinda weaksauce. Paler fur and pink feet and tail-tip, ad I’ll be honest, I don’t like it. I think if they’d changed the body colour more, I’d be cool with it, but with just this... no, default wins.
Now for the sassy gay version, Alolan Meowth.
Tumblr media
I love this fabulous little guy. He’s wonderful. As for the shiny, that’s more like it. I like the grey of the default colours, but the deep blue for the shiny looks great, as do the purple highlights. The outsides of the ears look a bit off, but I’m okay with that, giving this to the shiny.
Next up, the gremlin version, Galarian Meowth.
Tumblr media
And the hits just keep a-comin’! One of the things I really like about alternate forms is when their shinies look like the original, and Galarian Meowth here does that. You love to see it. Shiny wins.
And the last Meowth today is the classic meme version, Long Meowth.
Tumblr media
Long Meowth is Long.
Anyway, as much as I love that we have Longcat in Pokemon form now, the shiny form is still less than amazing. It works a little better with the reddish tones of the Dynamax aura, but still, default wins.
It’s weird to do one of these where the base form is the one with the most variants. Still, we’re done with Meowth, onto Persian, starting with the Kantonian form.
Tumblr media
Persian inherits Meowth’s shiny colours, but I think they work better here. With the pink limited to the ears, the pale fur makes it look more like the Pokemon’s inspiration, that being white fluffy cats stereotypically held by Bond villains and mob bosses. I’ll give this one to the shiny.
And finally today, we have Garfield Persian.
Tumblr media
If Alolan Raichu was created by its intense love for pancakes, then clearly Alolan Persian is the product of lasagna. It’s the only explanation that makes sense. Anyway, love this goofy little guy. Like the Kantonian form, it inherits its base form’s shiny colours, and they one again work pretty well here. Going to overall call it for the shiny, for the same reasons as before.
Default: 44 Shiny: 24 Draw: 9

GARFIELD is more cat than Meowth
Meowth - that’s right! - really doesn’t look that much like a cat when you look at it. The slit eyes and ears and arguably the paws are doing a lot of the heavy lifting there, and don’t really get there in my opinion. Meowth looks almost less like a cat than Garfield does. But it’s also not really based on a cat as such, it is based on the beckoning cat, the maneki neko, from Japanese folklore, who is connected with wealth (hence the coin on its forehead) and good luck. So more of a yokai, I think, than an actual animal.
At least until it evolves into Persian, which just straight up looks like a puma. Or Alolan Persian which looks like… Garfield. Alolan Persian is interesting though in that it's based off human-made cat breeds and their weird anatomy, tying into the Alolan region's general theme of exploring the human impact on the animals around us.
Gigantamax Meowth, which is straight up a longcat meme, interestingly looks more catlike than the base-form, since its proportions are perversely more cat-like when enlongated.
So yeah, Meowth is a nice little pokémon design, but not that great of a cat design.
We'll tackle Galarian Meowth when we get to Perrserker.

hellooooo
i came here to ask the expert (you) about cute and/or badass cat pokemons 😌😌
also here to ask how you're doing!!!! muah😘
You gotta know asking me about pokemon stuff is a dangerous thing cause I'm gonna full on go down this rabbit hole and provide you with a complete essay 😌👀
There are actually quite a few cat and/or cat-adjacent pokemon so I'll try to properly break it all down
Also I'll have to break this up in parts because of the image limit 😂
First up: pokemon that are undeniably a cat
Starting with what is definitely the most iconic cat pokemon and one of the most iconic pokemon overall: Meowth
Tumblr media
Most iconic because a meowth is known as part of team rockets most iconic team aka Jessie, James and Meowth
Tumblr media
This specific meowth is one of the only pokemon that can speak human language (in the pokemon anime)
There are some other pokemon in the anime that can technically speak human language by using telepathy, illusions or mind control (more often than not mind control of that specific meowth actually) but the number of pokemon speaking in a human language with their own mouth is at <5 I think
The reason why this meowth can speak human language (and also why it walks on 2 legs for that matter) is because he learned it to try and impress a female meowth but she rejected him anyways 🥲
Meowth can evolve into Persian
Tumblr media
A persian also has quite a prevalent role in the pokemon anime as the main/companion pokemon of Giovanni, team rockets boss
Tumblr media
(Ya know it's that whole "mafia boss turning around in his chair while slowly petting his cat"-trope)
Also fun fact: it is kind of an ongoing debate whether or not Giovannis Persian is a shiny because the shiny form of persian doesn't look that different from the normal one (the most obvious difference is the pink inner ear)
Tumblr media
and in some shots of the anime the Persians ears do look somewhat pink-ish
Tumblr media
I'm pretty sure the most common opinion is that it is not shiny tho as its first appearance in the anime actually predates the existance of shiny pokemon alltogether
Meowth also got 2 different regional forms by now (making it one of only 2 pokemon to have more than 1 regional form and the only one that has regional forms from more than 1 region)
First off we got alolan Meowth (alola being the region/country in the pokemon world this regional form occurs in)
Tumblr media
this one is a dark type instead of the normal type the regular Meowth is
Alolan Meowth obviously then evolves into alolan Persian
Tumblr media
which I always thought looked like it just got it's wisdom teeth out
Then we got the other regional form which is galarian Meowth
Tumblr media
this one is a steel type and also partly based on a viking which becomes even more apparent in its evolution which isn't galarian Persian but instead is called Perrserker
Tumblr media
Oh yeah and then there is also Meowths gigantamax form (a special battle gimmic from gen 8 that makes a pokemon giant and stronger and changes its form) and that one is legit just longcat
Tumblr media
There are 2 starter pokemon (the ones you get to choose at the beginning of every pokemon game) that are also undeniably cats
For one we have Sprigatito
Tumblr media
the grass type starter of gen 9 (that everyone refused to call anything besides weed cat when it was first revealed) which evolves into Floragato
Tumblr media
and then Meowscarada
Tumblr media
In its final evolution it is a grass and dark type inspired by magicians and masquerades (and btw this is the starter I chose this generation cause 1. cat and 2. I always choose the grass type starter)
Meowscarada also has a signature move that imo is really goodIt's a base 70 power physical move that always hits and always is a critical hit (meaning it does 1.5 times damage)
The other cat starter is Litten
Tumblr media
the fire type starter from gen 7 which evolves into Torracat
Tumblr media
this one also has some hints of a tiger in its looks which is why the final evolution of this line is covered further down in the cat-adjacent section
Next up we have Glameow
Tumblr media
another normal type that evolves into Purugly
Tumblr media
I really love this evolution line cause you got this dainty little kinda snooty cat that goes on to evolve into a mean grumpy chonker
Now to probably the most forgettable cat pokemon there is: Skitty
Tumblr media
another normal type and genuinely 9 times out of 10 upon seeing this pokemon somewhere I'll go 'oh yeah that thing still exists'
It's evolution is covered further down in the maybe a cat section
Another one is Purrloin
Tumblr media
a cute little dark type pokemon that along wirh sprigatito and glameow probably resembles a normal house cat the most
Still all in all a fairly forgettable pokemon
It's evolution can once again be found further down in the cat-adjacent section
Now to the last pokemon in the undeniably a cat section: Espurr
Tumblr media
aka if a little child that accidentally walked in on its parents having sex was a pokemon (like look this thing in the eyes and tell me it hasn't seen things it shouldn't have)
Fittingly its a psychic type cause it probably took some psychic damage from that experience
It evolves into Meowstic
Tumblr media
the first pokemon covered here with an obvious gender difference (the left one being the male form and the right one being the female)
Meowstic is kind of on the border between undeniably a cat and cat-adjacent tho as it is technically not based on a normal cat but on a nekomata, a kind of cat yokai from japanese folklore that, according to legend, can evolve from a normal house cat

a post i saw on here inspired me to do something stupid, and check to see which Pokemon don't OFFICIALLY have any plushies, I'm going based off the official Pokemon center website, and am checking it for literally every Pokemon. I'll do this generation by generation, not all at once lol (although if i were like 8% more mentally ill, i would do it all at once..)
So, i guess this is the Kanto post.
what's interesting is that MOST Kanto Pokemon absolutely have a plushie, but some of the less popular ones (i'm assuming?) only have a smaller plush from a line where they are sitting down (called sitting cuties, if you're interested)
Also most Kanto Pokemon are in like, every fucking game and it's very tiring checking the 14 different version of each mon, but it's worth noting that most alternate forms of Pokemon (at least in Kanto) have plushes as well. Just in case you were specifically looking for a Galarian Weezing Plush, or whatever.
Alright, after looking at the site, turns out literally every single Pokemon in Generation 1 has a plushie, so here are some fun facts:
There are seventy-five different Pikachu plushies!
The next Pokemon with the highest number of plushies is Ditto, with 21!
Disappointingly, but not surprisingly, there is no Missingno merchandise :(
In the site listing, when looking specifically for Kanto Pokemon, some unexpected Pokemon show up, namely Garchomp, Hattrem, and Wailord. That's because there's a plush of Pikachu dressed as both Garchomp and Hattrem, and there's a plush of both Pikachu and Eevee riding a Wailord
The only Gen 1 Mega Pokemon to get a sprite, is Mega Shiny Gengar, for some reason.
The following Gen 1 Pokemon have Gigantamax plushes, and they all look really stupid! Snorlax, Charizard, Meowth, Gengar, Pidgey, and Pikachu! A couple of them of them come in different sizes, with some of them being pretty big! Such as...
THE GIGANTAMAX MEOWTH IS 5 AND A HALF FEET TALL.
That's all for this post, so I'll catch ya later with a post about all the Johto Pokemon plushies!

❝ Charizard has been observed to have two separate Mega Evolution forms, both with their own abilities and typings, as well as a Gigantamax form and unique signature move. With this in mind, do you think there's further transformation potential that we've yet to discover? And, follow up inquiry: Do you have any hypotheses on why species such as Charizard, Pikachu and Meowth seem to carry a greater susceptibility for transformational battle gimmicks and regional differences? ❞
" An excellent line of questioning, one I've been looking into myself! I've long since hypothesized that pokemon with multiple evolution lines - such as Eevee - are closer in their genetics to Mew. Now, I wouldn't fully equate transformative battle techniques and regional differences, though there is some overlap.
Regional differences truly seem to be more adaptational necessity than anything else. I have questions on whether the Galarian Meowth should truly be considered the same Pokemon as it's Kantonian and Alolan counterparts, but that's another discussion altogether.
Transformative battle differences is a slightly more interesting phenomenon. Mega-Evolution and Gigantamaxing. A very small, yet interesting cross section of pokemon are capable of both. Only 4, in fact. Charizard, Venusaur, Blastoise, and Gengar. Perhaps they have a greater susceptibility to radiation than other pokemon? The changes are distinct, and yet there are similarities to the processes. Both require a stone to activate, and a certain type of energy or particle to manifest the temporary change."
He shakes his head, grinning.
"Ah, I've rambled more than I've answered your question. I suppose the best answer I can give without involving Professor Magnolia and Professor Sycamore is that the susceptibility to regional variants appears to be a slow change to the pokemon over time, an adaptation to circumstances after a pokemon species has been introduced to a new environment, while a higher liklihood of being affected by temporary transformative phenomenon seems to be a way to capitalize on energies and radiation similar to that let off when a pokemon evolves, but in a way where the pokemon cannot maintain the transformation past when the radiation can be metabolized.
Does that make sense? Again, I would have to consult the literature a little more to give a sure answer, but from observation alone, that's what I would hypothesize."

Description
The events of Sword and Shield take place in the Galar region, a large, narrow stretch of land that is one of many in the Pokémon world. Shigeru Ohmori, the game’s director, described it as a more modern setting. The region itself is influenced by Britain, with many landmarks resembling the Houses of Parliament and the Cerne Abbas Giant. In the south of the Galar region are rural towns with cottages and Victorian architecture. The center of the region is populated by an industrial revolution-style city with steampunk elements.
Many towns in the region have Pokémon Gyms that look like soccer stadiums and feature both Dynamaxing and Gigantamaxing as introduced by Pokémon League Galar Chairman Rose. Much of the region’s northern areas are dominated by snow-capped mountains. The Wild Zone, an open-world area with numerous roaming species of Pokémon, encompasses much of the region’s south-central region. The weather in the Wild Zone changes regularly.
Pokémon already introduced in previous games, such as As in Pokémon Sun and Moon, such as Weezing will receive regional Galarian forms with new types, stats, and appearances. Some Pokémon, like Linoone and Meowth, can even evolve regionally.
Also, be sure to try out Pokemon Platinum Redux!
