I'm watching Batman the Animated Series from the beginning and I asked my mom why she let us watch the series as kids. I mean when you take in the cartoons of today (and even in the early to mid-2000s), many children's shows don't use many of the topics in BTAS has in the series.
I mean the first two episodes are all about the relationship between Catwoman and Batman versus Selina Kyle and Bruce Wayne (S1E1 and S1E2). But then we get to the episode featuring Mister Freeze whose story is tragic and you being to feel his motivations for revenge (S1E4). Then there is the episode that doesn't have any supervillains (S1E7) where it is all about 2 mob bosses and the younger one has to make a decision not only about his current life with his son and empire but also to come to terms with his past. It's an interesting episode since it's all about the human characters that live in Gotham.
But my mom simply said that she only let us watch the show when there was an adult in the room like my mom or my uncle who loves comics and could explain what was going on.
I'm still watching the series and realizing that these themes exist this early in the show's run makes me excited and realize that without Batman the Animated Series there would not be a DC animated universe where we got some of the most memorable shows in animation.

Gotham s1e2
-god. the way this dude talks.....love this. Love this so much for Oswald. crawl out of the river half dead smelling like sewage and just kill a few random people for the pettiest possible reasons
- Ed: "heeeyyyy guys :D Heres the fucked up facts nobody wants to hear but I am super jazzed!!!"
- this show is so slay the way fish telling falcone he's like a father to her mirrors the way she confronted Oswald about his betrayal
- OSWALDS MOM IS ONE OF MY FAV ACTRESSES HIHIHIHIHIHIIIIII
- "he would never leave his clothes. quite the gentleman" that's basically saying he's gay
-"I knew I'd regret killing you as soon as I gave the word. But you know me, I'm feisty." I love her so much. how to apologize for trying to murder you
-i have no clue who the child snatchers are they are such weirdos
-ok but kind of based about how the mayor is talking about "saving" these kids but instead is literally sending them to juvenile prison, about the falseness + how society doesn't care for homeless people even children and jail is always treated as a solution for anyone who's deemed a problem. pretty interesting tbh
-selina literally gouged someones eyes out. Love it!
-i wonder if the no psychiatrists rule is because of Martha's family?
-BRO whoever that guy is his family literally wouldn't pay ransom that's so sad "you must be quite the scamp"
-love Oswald's fucked up trailer. male living space
-i like Selina okay but there's too many contradicting parts things that work and don't work you know

Some more Oswalds, but with no shading this time. I'm trying to do a project where I draw every hair style Oswald has had... Lets just say he's had a lot.
The Oswald to the left is from S1E2
The Oswald to the right is from S1E3 - S1E6
The bottom versions of the drawings are transparent.

s1e2 selina kyle
killcount:
“doug” the childsnatcher: “soldier” (homeless guy)
oswald cobblepot: douchebag college bro from the car, probably the other douchebag college bro as well.
jim gordon: quillan’s janitor
“patti” the childsnatcher: cat scratch fever dude w/ no eyes
episode total: 5 total count: 12
the dark knight rises: shit is clearly fucked in gotham. crime families are ruling the city, yes, but honestly that’s the least of it; look at the police force. we see that bo, the first responder, is late to the scene of the crime because he takes protection money from a local restaurant & gave them first priority (in other words, he’s a crooked bitch demanding a racket, AND it gets in the way of him actually doing his job). the cops are pretty much, explicitly, just an extension of the mob at this point.
interestingly, we also see the start of an exploration of the wayne’s corruption; falcone refers to “the wayne empire,” mirroring the way they talk about the crime families And Also setting the waynes up as, like, a picture of the wealthy elite taken to a whole ‘nother level. gotham is the last modern vestige of the city state--and that is the wayne empire. who takes the crown now that the emperor and empress are dead?
in OTHER news, the waynes really fucked bruce over. the murder itself was the lynching pin, causing him to jump over the fucking edge, so to speak, but he is Just A Little Boy! he is so troubled! he’s self harming and alfred yells at him and HITS HIM for being stupid, he’s listening to loud music and drawing fucked up shit, he’s both burned himself and is apparently cutting, and alfred, seeing all of this, refuses to get the boy who saw his parents shot a therapist, because the waynes told him to essentially let bruce raise himself. “the children are thoroughbreds,” basically.
quoth barbara (thinking about essen shushing the child snatcher case in fear of bad press): “i can’t believe the system is so corrupt.” quoth jim (thinking about how he was yelled at for not beating a perp, thinking about the cop/mob connection that demanded he kill a man to prove his loyalty, thinking...): “you have no idea.”
oh! and jim tells bruce the kids need more than money to keep them safe.
sliding scale of barbara kean’s sanity: she seems to be doing alright, but she’s troubled by jim’s troubles. also, this episode sets up some shit that will lead to irreparable damage later on; jim, even when he’s telling her things, isn’t telling her everything. she knows it. she hates it. he specifically hasn’t told her about oswald, which gives her reason to believe he’s a murderer pretty soon. plus, what she does w/ the information he does give her about his work (go straight to the press) gives him immediate reason to start trusting her less... and so they spiral.
sliding scale of ed nygma’s sanity: he’s a little bit more of a lurker this episode. creeps outside the captain’s office until someone notices him, lingers inside until everyone in the room makes it obvious he’s not welcome. he’s trying his best, but he’s not... very... “well liked,” shall we say.
continuity: montoya and allen are looking into the murder of oswald cobblepot. he was their snitch, after all. so that’s problems... many things are subtly set up in this episode: falcone and fish discuss maroni and his anticipated power play (adding another piece to the political chessboard of this season), the atp drug the child snatchers use is established to have been developed for arkham asylum, which is also established to have been closed for the past 15 years AND to have recently been in the works for a reopening, specifically by thomas and martha wayne. and that’s all just offhanded discussion. also related to the atp, when ed is listing the only three places that still stock it, it’s quillan pharma, drakatech (?)... and welzyn, which isn’t relevant at all to THIS episode (quillan’s the one dealing with the childsnatchers) but WILL become relevant to everyone in a few episodes, when welzyn manufactures viper. oh, and naturally the identity of the man the childsnatchers are working for: the dollmaker. hm!! on a lighter note, harvey’s ex-white knight tendencies that we explore in spirit of the goat are foreshadowed here; essen accuses him of leaking the child snatchers story to the press, w/ the reasoning that he’d done it before. after jim & barbara established that it was the right thing to do....
parallels: jim & selina meet in this episode. they are... The Same™. (look, i’ll come back to it later, but even tho my parallel in the pilot was btwn selina and oswald, and even tho they’re the two that are the villain counterparts to our heroes, jim and SELINA are the matched set.) also, this is the episode where fish expresses the wish that penguin wasn’t dead (because she wants him to suffer), but also she tells jim & harvey that she knew it was a mistake to order them killed as soon as she did it. so that means something?
neither here nor there, but gertrud tells montoya & allen how elegant and well dressed oswald is, and bruce comments on the orphans’ scruffy appearances and buys them new clothes... we love a dandy, i guess.
characterization: we meet some irrelevant street kids that selina knew; zeb, smoke, and mackey (corey in the house). i’m basically using the characterization tab as fanfic reference so i might as well record that.
lazlo, fish’s lover, is relevant, in that falcone beats him to get to her. it definitely does affect her, though she says she only keeps him around for exercise. maybe more b/c of falcone’s threat and the fear of what it implies, though.
and gertrud! ozzie’s mom. everyone connected to oswald, even outside (maybe even especially outside) of his mob connections, is a little twisted. she’s no different; she’s clearly a bit out of her head, she mistrusts the police (which i guess we’re supposed to think is suss, though really...Fair and Just), she’s got that almost creepy codependency with oswald while not really knowing what’s going on there. (other examples: elijah, oswald’s gothic horror father, martin, oswald’s lowkey homicidal son, edward, oswald’s fascist dog, jim, oswald’s corrupt boyfriend...) she also seems to think oswald has run off with some painted lady (actually, she says painted slut), which might be indicative of her experiences w/ van dahl and some unstable jealousy more than it is of oswald, who’s... you know.
Tumblr media
in other news, jim is all over the map here. he stops harvey beating mackey (and later, quillan, after they’ve already gotten info out of him) and protests that they should leak the story to the press, but he also seems content to keep his mouth shut until barbara takes doing good upon herself. he adapts to the mob shit pretty quick, but expresses disgust w/ the corruption in the system. he gets off on the wrong foot w/ mayor james because he disagrees with locking up the kids w/o a trial, but he doesn’t... step in... either. we see this willingness to compromise and bend the knee that means he’ll never be the hero gotham deserves.
also, not to be a jim apologist on main or anything (ha, ha), but he’s just so... brainwashed. all this, & he still tells alfred that being a cop, which has thus far caused him nothing but pain & misery, is the “best job in the world.” because he thinks he’s helping people. (and he likes getting to feel like a hero... so where do the misguided good intentions stop and the selfish motives begin?) he also kills a man for the first time on screen this episode because for all its examinations of dirty cops... gotham is still, at the end of the day, Copaganda. in an actual moment of me drinking I Love Jim Gordon juice, jim is the one who advocates for bruce going to therapy, and tries to convince him to go personally, even when jim himself is too emotionally stunted for it to help him.
also, backstory: harvey pegs his love life, saying, “high school sweetheart, then a bunch of hoes (read: eduardo dorrance) overseas only made you sad... and then there’s barbara.” he also calls jim a monkey riding a race horse; jim’s face is really good @ that. i misinterpreted the line about high school sweethearts back in the day to mean that barb was jim’s highschool sweetheart. this is on account of auditory processing disorder and also general dumbassery. anyway, the point is that jim is a boring, predictable bitch! whom i love.
...in terms of characterization from the episode that i don’t agree with, i can’t really see oswald writing all the shit that they had on his conspiracy board, lmfao. “crybaby brucie,” “gordon=STOOGE,” & so forth. i pretend i do not see it.

Review of Harley Quinn S1E2: “A High Bar”
Spoilers, if you haven’t seen the episode yet!!
So, DC has yet to disappoint me with this show! I love all the snarking between the Gotham rogues. Bane is actually the best of the rogues besides Harley and Ivy, I mean, he’s a freaking riot. When he’s beating up on Kite Man because ‘he was attacking him’ like oh my gosh, that’s too good. Bane, Kite Man couldn’t do jack squat to you even if he wanted to, LOL.
Can we talk about Kite Man? Yeah, he’s very creepy with women. But I like how DC outright had Ivy point out how Kite Man’s way of dealing with women is creepy and like bluntly saying that maybe men should make sure to communicate with women instead of just assuming. That was kinda cool of them. Also, Kite Man is such a dumb character. I mean, Kite Man? Really? What’s he going to do? Beat me up with his kite??
I still love how Harley is navigating her breakup with Joker and how to handle the changes brought about by it and how Ivy is still such a good friend. She’s literally got Harley’s back! I really hope to see more character development with her in future episodes. Because I like the development she’s had so far, but we definately need more before the end of the series.
I’m really glad Frank the plant is back for this episode! He didn’t get as many witty one-liners as he did in the first episode, but I really enjoy that they’re keeping him!! Frank is like that asshole roommate who you love, but you find vexing at times. Speaking of side characters, I’m a little sad we didn’t get to see more of Jim Gordon at the end of his rope. Because he was hilarious in the first episode. I really, really hope that we get more of Gordon in the future!
Also, I really hope Harley gets her hyenas in later episodes. In this one, she got a tiger, but now we need her hyenas!! Plus her little murder strut into the bar mitzvah? Iconic. She was rocking it!
Anyway, I liked this second episode well enough, even if it wasn’t quite as good as the pilot episode. I’m not sure anything will top that first episode, to be completely honest. However, I’m excited to see what they keep putting out!

Shameless self plug number...erm. I’ve lost count. These are my 2 characters from the series Pennyworth, seen in S1E2 (execution photographer) and S1E9 (prisoner). Set in an alt universe version of London in the 60s (very ‘Elseworlds’), Pennyworth charts the early years of Alfred Pennyworth, before he became the famous butler to the Wayne’s in Gotham City, and eventually, surrogate father to Bruce Wayne, aka: The Batman. Proud to be a part of the Batman universe, however small my part may be. Bats has always beeen, [heavy breathing] my number one [continue heavy breathing]. #GuessTheReference #Pennyworth #Prisoner #DC #WarnerBros #Batman https://www.instagram.com/p/B7UB8UCgiGI/?igshid=1wzmsaj97fjaj

The Sunday Post is a weekly meme originally from Caffeinated Book Reviewer. It’s a chance to share News. A post to recap the past week, showcase books and things I have received and share news about what is coming up for the week on my blog.
I so forgot my Sunday Post last week, so I’ve combined the two as one big one. Not much exciting has happened these past two weeks. Been tired a lot lately, especially the last few days. My bf has a kind of flu thingy and gets a weird sleep cycle because of it, which results in screwing up my sleep as well… Feel like I could sleep for two days straight and still not have enough sleep… Fell asleep on the couch at least four times in the last few days… One at night and most during the days, watching a movie or episode… Maybe it’s also the winter coming down at my energy levels… It’s cold, sad weather and not much to do… And especially with him having the flu, it means I can’t do a lot – besides reading, sleeping, eating, cooking, blogging or watching an episode or movie – I know you need your rest when not feeling well, so I won’t bother him with too much noise and stuff… But it’s gets kinda boring after a few days… In combination with my sleepiness, it makes me less motivated to watch or read anything.. So it get’s real boring.. Hope he feels better soon and I feel more energetic again… Gotta work out tomorrow again, prepare for my first Taekwondo exam on February 3rd!!
One exciting thing that did happen was discussing out holiday. It’s becoming more permanently set and booked =]=]=]=]=] I so wanna go to Orlando and Harry Potter’s Wizarding World…. Biggest issue is saving money to spend there hahahahaha
Big thingy did happen on the blog…. I WROTE/PUBLISHED/ MY FIRST REVIEW IN THREE MONTHS AGAIN!!!!!
This weeks posts:
What about that bookchallenge 2016 + goal 2017.
December Wrap-Up + January TBR.
The Backlist Reader Challenge 2017.
TTT#19 Top Ten 2017 Debuts I’m Excited For.
Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them Awesomeness!!
TTT#20 Top Ten 2016 Releases I Meant To Read But Didn’t Get To (But TOTALLY plan to).
#72 The Diabolic.  <<<<<————- !!!!!!!!!!!
  Coming next week:
TTT#21 Ten Underrated/Hidden Gem Books I’ve Read In The Past Year Or So (up to you if you want it to be those published in the past year or so or just ANY underrated book you’ve read recently).
Tv Thursday #7. Week 3 [need some motivation there too, don’t want to let you guys down…]
Maybe some reviews =]
So in the last two weeks I’ve had a great start of this year’s Goodreads Reading Challenge 2017. I’ve finished Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. I’ve read Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, Quidditch Through the Ages, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them all by J.K. Rowling and The Diabolic by S.J. Kincaid.
I’m currently reading Breath of Fire by Amanda Bouchet [Kingmaker Chronicles #2] as a NetGalley review, Tales of Beedle the Bard by J.K. Rowling and Snow Like Ashes by Sara Raasch. After Breath of Fire I’ll start reading Halfway Bitten by Terry Maggert and/or The Gender Secret by Bella Forrest. After Snow Like Ashes I’ll start Carve the Mark by Veronica Roth. That beautiful hardcover will arrive this Tuesday and so I hope I’ve finished reading Snow Like Ashes before it arrives =]
So these two weeks I watched A LOT of episodes… If you’ve noticed a weird watching order with bones that’s true nothing is weird there… Apart from the fact that the first two episodes of Season 4 were a double episode and my streamer made episode 1 episode 1&2 and made episode 2 number 3 and so on… So I got confused in the episode titles and figured it out after watching episode 8 hahaha… A bit late, I know but I’ve watched the missing episode after all…
My bf finally wants to watch series again during dinner – instead of brain-dead comedy central re-runs – and now we’re watching Modern Family S8. We’ve watched How I Met You Mother as our dinner series before Modern Family and You’re the Worst will probably be our next. We also watch a few others together, but mostly they wait a long time because of the snack series [HIMYM and Modern Family, eps of 20-23 minutes instead of at least 40 minutes an episode]. Those are Gotham, Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and Scorpion. The rest of the shows can’t be watched together because of work, our preferences in watching series and our progress if watching the same series.. haha we love a lot of the same things, but in some series I’m ahead of him and some he’s ahead of me.. So we watch together separately mostly lol.
