Gertrude definitely knew more about what is going on than Jonny, so it's obvious that the institute had already some knowledge about some of these statements than they told Jonny.
But why? Do they actually want Jonny to have a mental breakdown? Are they manipulating him and are the reason for the "feeling seen" problem? Elias of course knows something else but I don't really know if he knows just about specific statements (the Lukas family ones and these) or just in general, tho. Did he know about Jane Prentiss? The spider problem who keeps popping in and out? The other random cases who appear to be recorded? This statements take place everywhere in the world too, so whatever is provoking this does not care about physical barriers and travel which strengthens the "fear entities" theory, since fear is not specific from a place. Cause if it was a god problem it would probably be more contained to whatever this god is worshipped, but everyone fears something, so... maybe?

I've been thinking about Nikola and finally realised what is so wrong with her name for me
my first language is russian, but I also speak polish and a bit of ukrainian and for all of them Nikola's surname is grammatically incorrect
Orsinov comes from Gregor, and it's fine here, it's a masc surname, but in most slavic languages (to my knowledge) surname changes based on gender. so to be correct she should be Nikola Orsinova
I don't know where to go with it, but it's just a fun little thing. it's subtle but makes her just a-little-not-right and that just what the stranger is about, isn't it? some smallest thing, that makes you doubt it's humanity

Based off a post I saw with the idea that Robert Smirke had fourteen friends, each falling too/representing a different entity, with Smirke himself being the Extinction.
To get the obvious ones out of the way: Jonah Magnus as the Eye, Mordechai Lukas as the Lonely, Maxwell Rayner as the Dark, and George Gilbert Scott as the Buried; these ones are all canon. Not directly canon but a pretty reasonable assumption is Simon Fairchild as the Vast; we know Simon had Maxwell Rayner help him with his Awful Deep ritual in 1853, which was only a few years before Smirke died, and Smirke hung out with Rayner a ton, so it makes sense for Simon to be part of the group (though by a different name; he only started going by “Simon Fairchild” in the 1930s). Another fairly reasonable assumption, in my opinion, is John Franklin for the Hunt. Franklin is canonically a Hunt avatar in The Magnus Archives, his real-life timeline overlaps with Smirke and the rest, and Rayner was canonically interested in his expedition, which was probably because he wanted to use Franklin’s knowledge of arctic exploration for his ritual, but could also imply they knew each other, and therefore, Smirke’s gang.
For the Corruption, my first thought was John Amherst, but he only became an avatar during the Second Boer War, which was about half a century after Smirke’s time. Instead, John Snow is a better fit. He was an English physician who lived during the same time as Smirke, and he had something going on; his descendant Neil Thompson has a syringe that belonged to Snow that had Corruption properties, so Snow fits. For the Slaughter, we could go with Charles Fleming. We know he was in China from at least the beginning of the First Opium War in 1839, and Smirke and Jonah and the rest were up and active on their supernatural studies since at least the 1810s, so it’s theoretical Fleming could have hung out with them, even though he didn’t become touched by the Slaughter until he went to China. Maybe he came back later, though he was in China at least until 1862. Alternatively, William Hall, the actual captain of the Nemesis, could be an option, his lifetime overlaps pretty well with Smirke’s, though there is no evidence he interacted with the Slaughter besides his interactions with Fleming and the Nemesis. Still, he was probably a bit more high-society that Fleming, so I kind of prefer him. Finally, for the more reasonable ones, we have Joey Grimaldi for the Stranger. Grimaldi’s timeline overlaps with Smirke’s, and we know he was affected by the Stranger even before he was turned into Nikola Orsinov. The reason I’m choosing Grimaldi instead of Gregor Orsinov or Nikolai Denikin is that we know for sure he was in England while Smirke was, unlike the other two.
Now for the more out-there guesses. For the Flesh, there are a few options. One is Eustace Wick, the Lutheran priest-turned-cannibal, who did live at the same time as Smirke, but he became an avatar in 1832, died in 1845, and has no evidence that he’d even been to England, considering he’s American. The other options would be Benjamin Carlisle, Benjamin’s unnamed wife, or possibly some other relative or descendant of theirs. I find this one the more likely choice, because Jonathan Sims specifically wonders how Benjamin Carlisle’s wife was able to give her statement to the Magnus Institute, considering she starved to death in a cave on the Oregon Trail in 1845, as well as the fact that an apparent descendant of her, Toby Carlisle, is living in England by the 21st Century and has enough of a connection with the Flesh to be pretty severely affected by the failure of the Last Feast ritual. The unnamed Mrs. Carlisle being the Flesh representative does mean she presumably gave in and cannibalized her husband, and the timeline only gives her about a decade to have hung out with the rest before Smirke’s death, but I think that fits, considering what Smirke said about just coming up with theories about the Flesh in his statement.
The Spiral has similarly not a lot to go on. I would just say the Distortion, seeing as it’s an immortal manifestation of the Spiral itself. We know that Ivo Lenshik’s father was tormented by the Distortion in a human form, and apparently Lenshik’s great-uncle did too, implying that the Distortion did assume a humanoid form sometimes, before it was forced to by the failure of the Great Twisting ritual. Plus, Jonah Magnus clearly knows who the Distortion is, which yes, he could have learned at literally any point from the past two hundred years, but seeing as we’ve got nothing else, I’ll choose to believe. For the Web, the only older avatars of the Web we’re aware of would be the historical owners of the house at Hill Top Road. We don’t know who owned it during Smirke’s time; the closest we have are the unnamed blackmailer who died during the English Civil War in the mid-1600s, and Walter Fielding, who died in 1923. Walter’s son and grandson both owned the house for about thirty years before dying, so with the same amount of time applied, Walter couldn’t be our Web avatar. Honestly, the answer might just have to be “whichever Web avatar was owning the house at Hill Top Road during the first half of the 19th Century.”
For the Desolation, we have even less. Diego Molina founded the Cult of the Lightless Flame at some point prior to World War II, but we have no idea when, and it couldn’t have been that long, considering what Eugene Vanderstock says about the immortality of Desolation avatars having some kind of limit. The same is true of the End. The only known End avatar who was alive during Smirke’s time was Nathaniel Thorp, who was a Death at the time, and didn’t become human again until 1970. It’s unlikely that Deaths got breaks to socialize.
So, in summary, we know for sure about:
* Jonah Magnus — The Eye
* Mordechai Lukas — The Lonely
* Maxwell Rayner — The Dark
* George Gilbert Scott — The Buried
We can make some reasonable assumptions about:
* Simon Fairchild — The Vast
* John Franklin — The Hunt
We can make educated guesses about:
* John Snow — The Corruption
* William Hall — The Slaughter
* Joey Grimaldi — The Stranger
We can make complete guesses about:
* Mrs. Carlisle — The Flesh
* The Distortion — The Spiral
* Owner of the house at Hill Top Road — The Web
And we have nothing for:
* The Desolation
* The End
If anyone has ideas or things I missed, let me know.

THE NEW EPISODE!!!
OK
UHHH
SO is Celia sleepwalking? That’s what I’m assuming maybe it could have something to do with the fears cuz the key made joshua key man sleepwalk? I have no idea
Alice and Sam
Alice says she’s not been sleeping well and I don’t think Sam has either so they both could be having nightmares
Not exactly the same but when people gave statements they got nightmares from the archivist so that could play into it!!!
The person following Alice could also be the thing that escaped from the tunnels which would really explain the feeling of being watched
Gwen also has not been sleeping well + nightmares but I very much believe that’s because on Mr Bonzo so not much to unpack. But when she wasn’t there til after the case I was worrying she was dead
The case:
So it’s giving very much vast + buried and I loved in
The creepy guy is definitely Ink5oul and I wonder what’s the importance of tattoos in this universe
Are they like the books and artefacts in tma? Is the tattoo artist who made the ship tattoo like smirke, lietner and mikaile or more like Amherst, Gregor orsinov, Fairchild and Rayner? I feel like tattoos are gonna be important
Also the vibes of someone getting obsessed with something then dying (David specifically) is reminding me of ep 5 of tma the bin men one but Gordon is reminding me of Hezekiah wakely with the way he speaks about the sea so I feel like this is justifying my idea that the cases are told mainly from avatars point of views rather than victims.
And I’m assuming he jumped into the sea at the end
Alice seems extra annoyed at Gwen currently. Not sure if that juts cuz Gwen is being hypocritical or if there is something else going on there but just keeping an open mind and something is definitely going on with Celia I just don’t know what
Lena as usual is being mysterious and I’m very scared as to what she meant with Gwen already knowing who it is and too look out for it
In my mind that means it’s probably either Colin (he’s gonna die soon I know it), Teddy (less likely cuz I feel like he has something more to do but it would make sense with him quitting) or possibly a member of her family to continue to scare her and maybe Lena’s way of getting Gwen out or testing her
It also could be Jack (whoever that is) with what Celia said and her being late
Also the way she said it implies this person is already dead

Could Nikola Orsinov from The Magnus Archives?
Yes, Nikola Orsinov from The Magnus Archives podcast could kill Macbeth!
((No image available))
At face value, this seems rather easy; she's a sentient mannequin made by Gregor Orsinov, so she applies for all three Clauses, right? Well, it seems to be a bit more complicated than that, from what I can tell.
Nikola used to be a human before being transformed by Gregor, and this human was a man (Joseph Grimaldi), and presumably of woman born. But Nikola is still referred to with She/It pronouns, so we might consider her a trans woman, applying her for the Gender Clause anyway.
As for the other two Clauses, it really depends on whether we see Joseph and Nikola as the same person at different points of her life, or if we see them as two separate entities, and Joseph's corpse was just used as the materials to bring Nikola into existence. The wiki isn't entirely clear on this, and there very well might be something in the podcast itself that disambiguates this, but until someone comes forward with the receipts, we'll leave the Unconventional Birth Clause and Birth Parent Clause untouched.
Either way, Nikola is still able to kill Macbeth regardless!
Nikola Orsinov was also requested by @crows-junk-pile and an anonymous asker (who I will answer separately since they also asked about another character I haven't covered yet). Thank you all for your submission!

Stranger!Michael
Michael hadn’t really chosen the Stranger, nor was it something he’d been thrown into. It was more something that happened. He wanted to not be known, he wanted Gertrude and Elias to fear him instead of bully and torment him. The scariest thing to him were the dark shapes that hounded his sleep, large thin, pointed figures that creeped into his nightmares, so that was what he became. With a little help, he supposed, from Gregor Orsinov… but mostly he just showed him how to make his own shadows. Had his appearance changed? Well, sort of. He wasn’t a mannequin, he hadn’t been skinned, Gregor saw his potential far more than any of his dolls. His face had changed, his smile seemed more painted on than anything else. It moved, he could close his lips and move his teeth, but if you touched them it felt the same as his nose and cheeks. He also had wire strings that grew from his fingers that attached themselves to his creations before breaking off. He could pull at them and control them if he desired but to begin with they fell off like an umbilical cord.
Michael didn’t choose what they looked like, he created them with an intention and then the thoughts brought them to life. His latest was similar to ones he had done before, not that that was a problem. He stepped back from his creation and watched it. It was a black, angular thing almost as if it was made from drainpipes. Its arms had more corners than they should have, those appendages were the important ones. Michael created them to be able to detach so that they can hide and climb and slither until they catch their prey. The name that had been given to them was the Not Them which didn’t quite make sense to Michael, because they were all something. Someone. They just weren’t the someone that people wanted, that’s the thing people didn’t understand about the Stranger, Michael thought. No one was ever no one, they were lost, distant, displaced, replaced… But even then people were people.
Besides, they did all have their own personalities, the one Michael had created was quite mischievous and cheeky, its limbs were tangled up but it would sort that out itself. Not names, though. The Stranger didn’t have names, if they did they wouldn’t be strangers now, would they? This one he hadn’t decided where to send yet. The last one had ended up working in the Archive, which whilst fun wasn’t necessary any more. It would result rather tragically, so he had to think of another place to send this one. Maybe after playing with it for a while he’d just send it to make its own way in the world. They were much less likely to get hurt that way.
His workshop was in the tunnels beneath the Institute, where the prison used to be, but his direct points of power were connected to the theatres of London which he could easily move between. He moved some of the pieces from his favourites into his workshop - a few masks, some metres of curtain, all to bring that power here. He enjoyed it when there were circuses and street performers, little bursts of the Stranger scattered all over, slowly feeding him whether people realised it or not.

First of all, amazing opening to the statement. Thank you Leannne, you're a treasure. Secondly, it's weird that she seems to be basically immune to the Stranger, considering her family history. She doesn't necessarily have to take after her grandfather, but still, you'd think she'd have some reaction to clowns other than indifference.
Tumblr media
Haha, I get it, he was a 'strange' man who played 'strange' music. Very funny Jonny.
Tumblr media
I wonder what his plan was here. The statement implies that Grandpa Nick's death wasn't a shock, and yet he made no plans regarding the contents of the loft. Did he think his granddaughter would keep it locked forever? Or did he want her to find it, and maybe take over as organist? Then why lock the basement at all? If it was to keep Nikola inside, why not warn her that it was up there?
Tumblr media
I knew Nikola took her father's surname, but I didn't realise she'd taken her other father's first name! That's oddly endearing... or it would be, if not for the larger implications of a Stranger taking someone's name.
Tumblr media
Okay, so Nick was part of the circus and obviously had some kind of relationship with Nikola. Why did he lock it away inside of his loft? Because it killed Gregor Orsinov? Seems that like that happened a long time ago, though. Maybe the lock was a relatively recent thing, only installed after Nick got too sick to care for himself and Leanne moved in? Prior to growing too unwell, Nick might have just been chillin' with Nikola, playing sick beats on the calliope and letting it rip people's jaws off whenever it wanted. The lock could have been to keep Leaane out, not to keep Nikola in. But he left Leanne the house, clown and calliope included...
I dont know. There's unanswered questions here.
Tumblr media
Okay, nope, 'thick layer of dust'. Nick hasn't been up here for a loooong time. He definitely just locked Nikola away, with seemingly no plans for what to do when she eventually got out. Maybe he got sick of the #circuslife and thought that if he just left her alone for long enough she would either die or stop pretending to be alive.
Tumblr media
Okay, this might just be my automatonophobic ass, but I swear to god if I found this in my house I would immediately burn it. Maybe that would be a bad decision, but I figure I already fucked up by opening the locked room and releasing the spirits of the broken dolls, may as well destroy them all immediately before they have a chance to come alive while I'm sleeping.
Tumblr media
It's probably been evident from my commentary thus far, but I subscribe to the theory that this clown doll is Nikola, in one of it's many forms. Which makes it hilaroous that the first introduction we get to one of the primary antagonists of the series is a doll that is immediately called ugly and almost thrown out as garbage.
Tumblr media
Omg hi queen!!! It's so nice to meet you!!! Though in hindsight, I really wish your first on-tape appearance hadn't been in a Stranger statement...
But still, iconic to have your first line of dialogue be both interrupting and correcting the Archivist. Get his ass.
Tumblr media
🥺 They were friends. He praised her, and they joked around with each other at work.
